tuck at the airport for a few hours and bored of the transit lounge? Here’s a better way to spend time. One of the lesser known areas of the city — Mahipalpur, which is just three kms from the Indira Gandhi International airport, offers interesting options to shop and eat. Spend some time at the minimarket, which is placed amid a myriad of hotels.

here’s some good news for book lovers in the Capital — the 20th edition of the world book fair, which starts today, is not only a better and bigger version, but also celebrates and salutes the city for completing 100 years. “We have tied up with the state government and are putting up a Delhi pavilion to showcase books and photographs enumerating the evolution of Delhi over the past 100 years. There is a major focus on the Capital, as it has hosted the fair for a long time now,” says MA Sikandar, director of NBT. Known for its innovative themes, this year, the World book fair has picked Indian cinema as its theme. “Indian cinema will complete 100 years in 2013, and to celebrate its success as a powerful medium, we have tied up with the Culture Ministry to showcase 400 books on Indian cinema in different languages. We also have a catalogue of the books that are being showcased. This is a collector’s item.” says Sikandar. This year, the fair is also emphasising on the look and feel of the event. “The theme pavilion has been designed like a theatre. We will
also be screening award-winning regional movies based on literary works. There will also be discussions and seminars involving stalwarts from the fields of cinema and literature,” says Sikandar. However, the highlight of the event will be the presence of celebrity authors, who will be a part of interactive sessions. “The names will be announced gradually. There are around 10-12 of them, mostly Indians and non-controversial names,” reveals Sikandar. Day long activities such as book releases, discussions, seminars, forums, talks on books, story telling sessions and workshops for kids have also been planned. This year, there is also a bigger international presence. Around 30 foreign publishers and organisations are a part of the event, including first timers like Iran and Afro-Asian countries. “The fair this time will be a lot livelier,” says Sikandar.

Hye Forlorn I was w8ting 4 ur msg desperately . Pls reply back. Ashu (Mr. Lonely)
metropolitandiary Dear Diary, Delhiites have a strange way of getting stuck on useless habits rather than purposeful activities. The traffic situation is one such nuisance. On any stretch of road in Delhi, one comes across bottlenecks caused by zig-zag barriers placed on the road, which are there to convey a sense of security to people. While driving on the Nelson Mandela road recently, I encountered many barriers. A car overtook me from
the right, jumped ahead and broke into the queue in front of an ’obliging’ car, causing me to brake suddenly. And no police constable hauled up the errant driver, defeating the very purpose of the barrier! I have noticed that average government servants or officials at counters of public dealing, now refuse to serve anyone who breaks into the queue. Surprisingly, the guardians of the law treat similarly erring car drivers with kid gloves. Ashish Rai

With Shah Rukh Khan becoming the brand ambassador of Kolkata, we ask Delhiites if they need one for the Capital? PHOTOS: WASEEM GASHROO
If there should be an ambassador at all for the city, then it should be Olympian Sushil Kumar, as he has made India proud and conducts himself vey well
Since Delhi is the Capital, the city is an amabassador in itself. It doesn’t need a celebrity to endorse it. It is home to India’s greatest hisotrical monuments.
I think Sheila Dikshit should be Delhi’s brand ambassador. She is an unsung hero and has done a lot of work behind the curtains. She deserves the credit!
The students of Delhi University should be the ambassadors of the city. They are young, and in recent times, they have raised voice for the country.

If you are looking to buy sportswear, the factory outlets will be your best bargain. To shop within a budget, head to Budget Stop, where apparels, accessories and footwear is available at a discounted price. The market also offers a taste of the Korean experience. Try out Amart, which stocks edibles and cosmetics made in Korea. The mart also has an in-house restaurant called Cocos, which serves continental and Chinese food. For fancy flip-flops, try Janta Footwear, where the price range starts from R100. Other shopping options includes Prabhu Bakery Shop, established in 1984 which sells customised cakes (R150 per pound) and bakery goods, a florist, and other apparel and footwear stores.

From road-side food to niche dining, the market offers a variety of options. For a quality dine-in experience, pay a visit to restaurants at the Taurus Hotel, such as Alpha 63 for world cuisine, or Punjabi Nawab’s for Indian food. Other options include Moti Mahal Deluxe, Dilli Castle, First Choice and Tandoori Nights. Walk straight from the main red light of Mahipalpur Village, and you could pay a visit to Ganesh Sweet House. Though the 25-year-old shop doesn’t look fancy, it’s popular for its variety of Indian snacks including samosa (R6) and jalebi (R20 for 100gms). At the market you will also find Bikaner Sweet House, where you can indulge in the gol gappas priced at R10 for five pieces. Other food items available here include pao bhaji and raj kachori. Next to this shop is a stall called Virag Momos, that sells veg-momos (R20), paneer-momos (R30), chicken-momos (R30) and fried-momos (R40).
Politicians are themselves brand ambassadors of the city. As for a celebrity, I will vote for either Ranbir Kapoor or Hrithik Roshan, as they are youth icons. AS TOLD TO ABHINAV VERMA
