INTRODUCTION
I’ll be the first to admit that it feels a bit odd to celebrate the best things while our city—and, let’s face it, the world—grapple with a deadly pandemic and the anti-Black racism and violence police officers and White supremacists perpetuate on a daily basis. This issue was initially scheduled to come out in May, and when we set the schedule late last year, we thought it would remind readers of all the great things D.C. offers in late spring and early summer: long, meandering strolls in and out of museums on the Mall, concerts at 9:30 Club and on Kingman Island, a round of drinks with loved ones at a new bar one night and brunch the next day. All of those things that once felt interwoven into D.C. life now seem like distant memories. The City Paper staff stopped working in our downtown office and shifted to remote operations in mid-March. In the intervening months, we’ve discussed what to do about Best of D.C., a mammoth operation that requires the participation of everyone on staff and many freelancers as well. At one point we discussed only releasing the results of the Readers’ Picks, which had been voted on and tabulated between early February and early March. During one particularly dark and exhausted moment, we thought about scrapping the issue entirely and trying again in a post-pandemic world. But as we continued to report on the news of D.C., we also saw the resilient people of D.C. begin to reinvent their work and their worlds in ways that made us feel hopeful or excited, at least for a moment. We saw dark theater lobbies transformed into resting and refueling stations for protesters demanding justice and equality. We saw young people create new organizations aimed at helping those in need. We saw restaurateurs become grocers and bar owners start delivery services in order to keep people fed and employed. These people love the imperfect city we call home. So do the writers, editors, designers, photographers, sales people, and operations staff that make up the City Paper team. So, we assume, do you, reader. So here’s to those making the best of a miserable year—the booksellers who do the browsing for us, the bagel makers who fill our bellies, the musicians who still play for us on social media, and so many other people who keep our city going. For now, we’ll celebrate you in print and online. When we can finally gather in person again, we’ll raise a glass in celebration with a simple toast: Thank you. —Caroline Jones, Interim Editor

Can nonprofits help DC’s small businesses survive?
By Jenny Flores, Head of Small Business Growth Philanthropy, Wells Fargo
Y
ou see it almost daily in local DC neighborhoods. Another coffee shop, store, eatery or salon that was part of the community’s fabric is suddenly gone. Among minority small business owners, 58 percent are “extremely” or “very” concerned about the financial viability of their businesses, and are more likely to have conducted layoffs or furloughs, or to have shut down their business, according to McKinsey’s recent US Small Business Pulse Survey. Unfortunately, it didn’t take a pandemic to give minority-owned small businesses an uphill battle. They are often smaller by way of employees, payroll and startup capital, and they may not have established banking relationships. Federal, state and local relief programs are in place, but they’re likely not enough to restore small businesses back to pre-pandemic norms. Could the nonprofit sector be part of the answer? Nonprofits have the flexibility to provide alternative financing products and services and give small business owners coaching they need to pivot their business in this evolving economy. For example, the Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC) serves as a nonprofit financial institution to equip local Latinos and other underserved communities with small-dollar business loans when they have difficulty obtaining lending or don’t meet criteria of traditional banks. Known as a Community Development Financial Institution, (CDFI), LEDC offers loans that range from $500 to $250,000, so borrowers like an ice cream shop owner can replace a broken freezer, a small accounting firm can retain staff, or a retail store can shift to online sales. They also recently offered Paycheck Protection Program loans. Another example is La Cocina VA, located in Arlington. The nonprofit’s new Zero Barriers Training and Entrepreneurship Center will soon begin helping underserved members of the community learn to launch their own culinary-based careers through a Culinary Small Business Incubator, and will offer ongoing support for workforce training in the culinary arts. CEO Paty Funegra says La Cocina VA is focused both on serving the immediate needs from COVID-19 while setting up clients for long-term success.
Jenny Flores “We have designed programs to provide entrepreneurs of color with the infrastructure, technical assistance, access to microlending, and distribution outlets to promote a faster recovery and foster the appropriate ecosystem to rebuild financial stability through entrepreneurship and new job opportunities in the food industry,” she said. These small business-focused nonprofits are making a herculean effort to help DC’s entrepreneurs survive 2020 and beyond. But they can’t do it without funding and critical cross-sector collaborations. That’s why last month, Wells Fargo launched an industry-leading commitment through our new Open for Business Fund. Our company is donating approximately $400 million to nonprofits focused on supporting small businesses, including those owned by racially and ethnically diverse people. The Open for Business Fund has several areas of focus, including capital and payment relief via CDFIs, and long-term recovery grants. This grant capital does not need to be repaid, so nonprofit lenders and community groups can leverage it for the best possible course of action based on the needs they see every day from entrepreneurs. For instance, a CDFI can use it to pay down interest rates on existing loan products to make them even more affordable, or create longer repayment terms, or offer emergency loans that
are forgiven. One of the first recipients of grant funds includes City First Bank DC, a local CDFI that is part of Expanding Black Business Credit Initiative’s new Black Vision Fund, with more grantees to be announced later this fall. The Open for Business Fund is a step in the right direction to help all types of small business owners, including sole proprietors, which make up a large part of the small business sector. If corporations and foundations across the U.S. follow suit and invest in expanding the capacity of the nation’s nonprofits, I am confident we can accelerate economic recovery and help prevent the disappearance of an unprecedented number of small businesses.

FOOD&DRINK Best Frosé You Almost Don’t Hate Yourself for Spending $12 on: Purple Patch’s Cantaloupe Frosé
Darrow Montgomery
EDITORS’ PICKS Best Frosé You Almost Don’t Hate Yourself for Spending $12 on
Purple Patch’s Cantaloupe Frosé 3155 Mount Pleasant St. NW, (202) 299-0022, purplepatchdc.com I’m not one to frosé all day. I usually give those individuals the side eye for spending so much money on what I’d consider spoiled wine. But I have made an exception for Purple Patch’s Cantaloupe Frosé. I frequent the Filipino American restaurant in Mount Pleasant nearly every weekend for their frozen cocktails. The secret ingredient that makes Purple Patch’s frosé so special? Calamansi honey. Calamansi is a tart citrus fruit native to the Philippines that mellows when combined with sweet honey. So get a Cantaloupe Frosé to go and mosey on over
to Malcolm X Park. You can also opt to swirl a rum-based cocktail called Rainbow Kisses into your frosé at no additional charge. Call the drink a 21-and-over spin on the Slurpee. —Amanda Michelle Gomez
Best Take Out When You’ve Been Reading About the Meat Industry
Happy Gyro 1509 17th St. NW, komirestaurant.com/happygyrotogo If you’re flirting with a vegetarian diet or at least letting veggies be the star on your plate most days of the week during the pandemic, either as a step toward a healthier lifestyle or in reaction to the poor working conditions of meatpackers across the country, you can still indulge in really good take out.
Komi, Dupont’s consistently excellent Greek fine dining restaurant, morphed into a more casual plant-based concept called Happy Gyro on March 18. Executive Chef Johnny Monis previously experimented with the pop-up, but this is the longest it’s run uninterrupted. “The whole thing is essentially a vegetarian take on the original Greek American take-out joint that Johnny’s parents opened in 1978, where he pretty much grew up,” says Anne Marler, Monis’ wife and business partner. Start by ordering the namesake gyro off the takeout-only menu. Monis swaps crinkly tofu skin known as yuba in for spit-roasted meat and slathers the sandwich with housemade tzatziki. He serves it on the same spongy pita Komi typically serves with its famous goat entrée. Round out a meal with seasonal treats like tomato-braised Romano beans with barrel-aged feta cheese and mint, zucchini
fritters, black walnut tacos, and plum and corn salad. Save room for summery ice cream flavors like corn gelato with milk jam and cocoa crumble or basil with polenta crumble and a blueberry swirl. Orders can be placed online through Tock. —Laura Hayes
Best Sandwich
The Chipwich at The Girl and the Vine 7071 Carroll Ave., Takoma Park, (301) 272-1230, thegirlandthevine.shop Great sandwiches contain something surprising, be it a contrasting flavor or discordant texture, that livens up the combination of meat, cheese, and bread. Best Ethiopian When You Have a Cold: Habesha Market and Carry-out

Whenever you feel a tickle in your throat or a trickle from your nose, you should immediately place an order at Habesha Market and Carry-out in Shaw. Go for the Taste of Habesha—Meat and Veggie Combo Two. For less than $30, the sampler of spicy lentils, yellow peas, collard greens, house salad, key wot, alicha, gomen besga, menchet abesh, doro wot, and beef tibs feeds one person for at least two days or two people for dinner. The spiciness of the lentils will clear your sinuses and all of the fresh and cooked veggies should rev up your immune system. Order Habesha for pick-up or delivery through apps like Uber Eats. If you pick up your food in person, you can also peruse the small selection of NyQuil and other overthe-counter cold medicines by the cash register. Just wear a mask. —Laura Hayes
Best Sandwich: The Chipwich at The Girl and the Vine 8 september 18, 2020 washingtoncitypaper.com
a spicy sauce that elevates a basic chicken sandwich. The wise sandwich minds at Takoma Park’s The Girl and the Vine know this, so they crushed some potato chips, tucked them inside a turkey sandwich, and reinvented the Chipwich. There’s no ice cream involved in this Chipwich, but you probably won’t miss it. The sandwich is deceptively simple: smoked turkey, avocado, pepper jack cheese, sprouts, and bacon on a hoagie roll. A generous slather of dijonnaise adds much needed acidity and the chips (kettle cooked, of course, to ensure they stay crispy) give every bite a salty crunch. Unlike the french fries stuffed inside sandwiches from Pittsburgh’s Primanti Bros., the chips here aren’t a gimmick. They’re intentionally added to give an ordinary sandwich a little something extra. It tastes comforting, but a little indulgent, too—just what you need to temporarily chase the pandemic blues away. Pair one with a cocktail or a draft beer at The Girl and the Vine’s outdoor wine garden or enjoy it from the comfort of your home. Since it doesn’t contain any excessively wet ingredients, it travels well. Make the delivery experience extra indulgent by adding snacks or drinks (alcoholic or non) to your order. —Caroline Jones
Best Ice Cream ShopTurned-Grocery Store
Lulabelle’s 847 Upshur St. NW, (202) 804-5800, sweetlulabelle.com Last weekend, I went to my local ice cream shop to pick up vodka, bagels, and an iced coffee. Next week, I might grab stir-fry noodles, banana bread, a four-pack of half smokes, and, yes, their delicious cookie ice cream sandwiches. Lulabelle’s Sweet Shop has responded to the pandemic by becoming a one-stop shop for … well, everything. On Saturdays, as the Petworth Farmers Market across the block is in full swing, owner Julie Wineinger and her team hand out prepaid packages of groceries to customers who ordered online and fill walk-up orders from passersby, who learn of their options on a whimsical chalkboard. The groceries are sourced locally, and any given Lulabelle’s order could have meat from Stachowski’s, Pratt Standard cocktails, sangria from Cinder just down the street, salmon from Ivy City Smokehouse, or the rich, creamy pints of Taharka Brothers ice cream that might remind you of a Lulabelle’s run during a normal summer. —Emma Sarappo
FOOD&DRINK Best Sea.S.A.
of empanadas—beef, chicken, veggie, and cheese. My favorite order is a sandwich. The Chimi Clasico and Chimi de Pierna, beef and pork shoulder sandwiches, are beloved by those from Santo Domingo. Both come stuffed with cabbage, shredded carrot, sautéed onions, and your choice of a milder jalapeño salsa or a blazing habanero sauce. The baguette it’s served on helps soak up all the greasy and spice-laden flavors. Just be sure to grab a few napkins before diving in. —Tim Ebner
Current Catch current-catch.com Though a C.S.A. is vital supply line, especially during the pandemic, and a great way to support local farmers, the weekly cascade of fruits and vegetables can get monotonous. What are you going to do with the fifth batch of apples this fall? Current Catch—a collaboration between Chef Jamie Leeds, owner of Hank’s Oyster Bar and Hank & Mitzi’s, and Brad and Hannah Blymier of War Shore Oyster Company—offers a seaworthy alternative for those looking to add variety to their diets. The seafood is sourced from the waters off Portland, Maine, and Leeds crafts the condiments to use with them, including soy-miso vinaigrette and cayenne remoulade. There’s a choice of four curated boxes featuring fixings for a lobster boil (lobster tails, clams, mussels, shrimp, baby new potatoes, and corn), DIY lobster rolls, a selection of War Shore shellfish, and one showcasing Leeds’ favorites. If you’d rather choose your own oceanic adventure, you can order a la carte. Like terrestrial CSAs, the offerings change with the season. The boxes ship nationwide overnight, so ultra-fresh seafood arrives on your doorstep within 48 hours of being pulled out of the briny depths. Here’s an idea: Make use of some of those apples from your traditional C.S.A to make a mignonette sauce for freshly shucked oysters from this Sea.S.A. —Nevin Martell

Bagels Despite the numerous obstacles that accompany opening a new business during COVID-19, the District’s bagel options multiplied like gremlins during the pandemic. The pair completed their Best Tacos Built to Travel: Muchas Gracias
Best Place to Eat After Costco
Mecho’s Dominican Kitchen
In the far corner of Northeast D.C., you’ll find Costco, the sacred home to jumbo packs of toilet paper, 65-inch flat-screen televisions, and an infamous hot dog and soda combo that goes for a whopping $1.50. Frugal penny pinchers like myself delight in aisles upon aisles of deals, but when I’m hungry and in need of a post-shopping pickme-up, you better believe I’m skipping the Costco food court. I book it instead to Mecho’s Dominican Kitchen, a colorful strip mall eatery across the street with online ordering and takeout options. Twin brothers Raymond and Aris Compres serve food filled with heart and soul, including fried chicken with tostones, mofongo, chicharrones, and four flavors

hat trick with a Georgetown opening at the end of July. Call Your Mother also gained some friendly competition. Pearl’s Bagels opened in Shaw in July, serving a mash-up of New York and Montreal-style bagels. Allee and Oliver Cox use a sourdough base and bake their bagels in a brick oven. Try “The Jack” with smoked tuna spread from Nassau Street Seafood in Princeton, New Jersey. In addition to new brick-and-mortar bagel bakers, a number of pop-ups specializing in bagels also entered the scene over the past five months. First there was Scrappy’s Bagel Bar from Chef Rob Rubba, run out of Estadio starting in March. The pop-up is on pause now that Rubba’s restaurant, Oyster Oyster, is open in a limited capacity. Once Oyster Oyster launches daytime operations, Rubba says his bagels and schmears could return. D el i kates s e n , f ro m C h e f Mi ke Friedman, calls All-Purpose Pizzeria in Shaw home Fridays through Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friedman and his team utilize Bullfrog Bagels to build sandwiches with lox or house-made pastrami. Its aim is to make Washingtonians nostalgic for famous New York delis. —Laura Hayes
Best Tacos Built to Travel
Muchas Gracias 5029 Connecticut Ave. NW, (202) 244-5000, muchasgraciasdc.com Muchas Gracias in Chevy Chase started out as a small market with groceries and a few prepared items from Chef Christian Irabién. When it proved to be popular, the chef rolled out a beefed up Mexican menu for takeout and delivery that focuses on tacos. Tacos suffer in transit when tortillas are overloaded with fillings and salsas. Irabién addresses this by packing his hand-pressed corn tortillas separately. They arrive in wax paper bags, sealed with stickers that read, “Hello, my name is tortillas.” Proteins, like carnitas Chihuahua, short rib birria, and panko-crusted cod, and the addictive house-made salsas are also packaged separately. Assembling them is half the fun. Muchas Gracias taco platters for one are available for pick-up or delivery through apps like Caviar. They come with four tortillas, garlic rice, Rancho Gordo beans, and chips and salsa for a filling meal that’s perfect for backyard hangs. —Laura Hayes

Best New Local Art: Summer Murals
EDITORS’ PICKS Best New Local Art
Summer Murals When thousands of people turn out in a spontaneous, summer-long, citizen-led movement against anti-Black racism and police brutality, there’s going to be art. Multiple outlets have chronicled how go-go has soundtracked the uprising, and it’s important to give that homegrown art form its due. This summer’s best new local art pieces, though, are the murals across D.C. that speak truth to power. That includes everything from the citizen-led addition of “= DEFUND THE POLICE” to the Bowser-approved Black Lives Matter Plaza, to the National Building Museum’s outdoor Murals that Matter exhibition (made up almost entirely of local artists), to the wildcat murals that adorned plywood covering windows across the city. They called out for justice, tenderly memorialized George
Floyd and others killed in incidents of racist violence, and loudly declared that Black lives matter. MuralsDC, funded via D.C.’s Department of Public Works, was suspended this year thanks to coronavirus-related uncertainty, but luckily, we still got public murals this year—even if some were ephemeral, painted on plywood that was later taken down. All we needed were some local groups like Radical Plywood and the Denver Smith Foundation’s #cre8change to organize artists, plus some canvases (asphalt, wood, or walls), and some paint. —Emma Sarappo

Local Artists’ Instagrams If you’re a smartphone user, there is no point in feigning shock or horror at your weekly
screen time report. Instead, you can start using some of that time to discover and support local artists, even if it’s just with a like on Instagram. With a few strategic follows, your feed can become a pocket gallery. Liana Madrid of @cosmic_dc creates digital collages that make celestial wonderlands out of the District. Illustrator Heidi Phelps (@heidiphelpsillustration) shares ethereal, gothic scenes and a modern tarot deck, one card at a time. Elmer Calata (@rustikoaregua) posts mesmerizing time-lapse videos of his intricate penwork on his Stories. Michelle Samson’s (@misafloral) romantic floral stylings are almost guaranteed to lower your blood pressure. And Dany Green’s (@ danyxart) mosaics are a good reminder that broken things can be made beautiful again— plus her glittery resin keychains are adorable. The clothier’s blog dives deep into the world of suiting, often at public officials’ expense. A 2019 post laid into Roger Stone and all the ways in which he is not like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Back in 2017, the blog explained why Trump wears “dumpy suits.” It also has fashion advice for the non-political everyman. Being cooped up in apartments and homes has made strolls, walks, and time spent outside feel a bit more precious this year. Walking is also a great way to see art, even if museums are closed or the thought of visiting one during a global pandemic doesn’t sit well with you, since this city’s littered with sculptures, from the typical equestrian statuary found downtown to lively, contemporary works. Some especially exciting additions include Sterling Ruby’s “DOUBLE CANDLE” at the Hirshhorn’s sculpture garden and the Yinka Shonibare wind sculpture, “Material (SG) I,” on the corner of 14th and R streets NW. A personal favorite—and a fun answer to the bronze men on horseback across the city’s parks and promenades—is “Man Controlling Trade,” two depictions of beefy men pulling even beefier stone horses on two sides of the Federal Trade Commission building downtown. One of the main benefits of
sculpture is how you can literally approach it in different ways. For the best works, new angles offer different interpretations. Spend enough time with the inscrutable form of Tony Smith’s “She Who Must Be Obeyed,” an angular metal structure on the grounds of the U.S. Department of Labor’s headquarters, and it might relent under your gaze, giving up some new information. —Emma Sarappo

But, if you were to make a beverage selection based on cans that catch your eye, it’d be difficult to pass on those with Red Bear Brewing Co. beer inside. Cans from the NoMa brewery, which has ramped up its canning operations during the pandemic, feature local designer Alice Packard’s bright, cartoonish illustrations of Red Bear’s mascot, Ursula, exploring several different locations. Those locations include the Capitol steps (51st State New England IPA), a dragon’s lair containing a mound of gold and carrots (24 Carrot Ginger Saison),

OverDrive dclibrary.org/overdrive After the DC Public Library reopened 14 of its branches for limited in-person service, multiple library workers spoke to the Washington Post and to DCist about feeling unsafe, virus-wise, at work. For library lovers, this poses a dilemma. Many of us probably relish the feeling of picking up books that have been on the hold shelf for months, this writer included, but the more people that come through the libraries, the higher the risk of infection. fact that the library offers essential services for many people, especially those without a stable internet connection at home. If you do have reliable Wi-Fi and can ditch the physical library, consider making it safer for those patrons and workers by shifting your literary consumption to OverDrive, DCPL’s one-stop shop for audiobooks and ebooks. The available titles are seemingly endless and regularly updated. The check out and return process is seamless—you choose when and how to download the books and they’re automatically removed on the due date. Best Prescient Release
Smithsonian Open Access si.edu/openaccess The Smithsonian has been working to provide expanded digital access to its collections for years; creating a “virtual Smithsonian” was one of Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch’s main goals from the moment he became head of the institution in 2019. But the Smithsonian Open Access portal, containing more than 2.8 million free images, was unveiled at an unusually prescient time: late February, just a few weeks before the country would come to a standstill because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the possibilities and promise of that collection were overshadowed after an initial run of articles and interviews, the Open Access collection was a godsend in the early days of quarantine, and remains that way even now, as the Mall museums remain shuttered. All you need is internet access to connect with a huge selection of the institution’s holdings and research. It would probably take months, if not years, to browse it all—and Open Access only represents items from 26 percent of the Smithsonian’s total collections. The most inspiring part is the way viewers are encouraged to remix, share, adapt, and create with the images and information. Open Access means they’re all licensed under the Creative Commons CC0 license, which requires no permission to change, repost, or add on. Projects can look like a goofy children’s zine about James Smithson or 3-D artworks that incorporate a scan of a National Museum of Natural History Triceratops skeleton. And there’s still so much left to be played with. I personally hope someone does something cool with the funky 1974 button that says “Home Rule Charter Yes!” from the Anacostia Community Museum. —Emma Sarappo

Iranian Film Festival Now that our travel options are severely limited, an international film festival is a good, safe way to take in another culture. Many local festivals organize around a particular topic or locale, but the best curated one is the annual Iranian Film Festival, co-hosted by the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center and the Freer Gallery. While the exacting dramas from Asghar Farhadi are the country’s best known cinematic exports, the festival highlights a wide variety of films that are difficult to find anywhere else. There are dark comedies, documentaries, thrillers, and action movies. Sometimes there is an opportunity to see the beginnings of an international star, like Navid Mohammadzadeh, a charismatic actor who carried two films from the 2020 festival. This year’s festival also came on the heels of escalating tensions with Iran, so if nothing else, it is an important reminder that a country’s people and its international position are often incongruous. That lesson is important for us to remember, and given how this year is playing out, we should probably hope the international community remembers it, too. —Alan Zilberman

DMV Hoodz and Newz
NMWA’s Virtual Exhibit Guide
DMV Hoodz and Newz is an Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube account that delivers a steady stream of cutting edge hiphop videos, D.C. neighborhood gossip, and raw cell phone footage. The content may be comedic, dramatic, or explicit, but it’s always interesting. Anwar Scott created DMV Hoodz and Newz about five years ago with the idea to combine entertainment and information. Scott says his goal is “to make an impact on the local culture and people.” He uses his platform to discuss community issues and also promote small businesses such as Respect Brand clothing, a successful apparel company started by a 16-year-old D.C. resident. The most compelling current storyline on DMV Hoodz and Newz involves a series of unsanctioned boxing matches featuring an undefeated fighter who goes by the colorful nickname “Sit ’Em Down” Sandy. Scott keeps his ear to the street and he is often the first local outlet to post music from talented new rappers and rising independent artists, months or even

nmwa.org/whats-on/in-your-region The National Museum of Women in the Arts promotes the work of women artists the world over. To that end, they have dedicated a page on their newly redesigned website called “In Your Region,” which usually points out shows at other museums across the country and globe that center women artists for those who can’t make it to the D.C. campus. But the coronavirus pandemic has turned the usually interesting page into an unexpected passport to the rest of the world. Because the NMWA understands most museums are closed, and we can’t exactly travel, all the listed exhibitions are virtual, which means, as the museum puts it, “all regions are your regions.” The list will take you from Skagen, Denmark, to Johannesburg to New Delhi in a flash; you can explore the works of Frida Kahlo in three separate exhibitions or dive into the art of Carrie Mae Weems, Kara Walker, or Ruth Asawa. Plus, there are a few D.C. exhibitions, if you want to end your virtual trip close to home. Try Women on Stamps or
In the dark and early days of quarantine, while those of us who depend on live music to survive were deep in a state of denial, the local indie soul band Oh He Dead came through with a respite. Twice a week, the band’s lead singer, CJ Johnson, and vocalist-guitarist Andy Valenti, hopped into their matching plaid onesie pajamas and broadcast their goofy selves over Instagram and Facebook Live. For about an hour, the two played originals and covers and welcomed viewers to join them in commiserating about just how much a global pandemic sucks. Their soulful grooves and lighthearted banter between songs struck the perfect pitch when we all needed more of both. Johnson and Valenti are part of a five-piece that was scheduled to depart for their first major tour right before the pandemic shut everything down. They’ve rescheduled for 2021, “fingers crossed,” Valenti says. In the meantime, he says the band has kept busy (outside of the Jammy Jamz shows) writing new music— they almost have enough songs to fill two albums. “I was on a three-hour Zoom call with our guitarist, Alex, this morning writing a new song together,” he says. “It’s keeping us happy and keeping us sane and scratching the creative itch.” —Mitch Ryals

GOODS &SERVICES Best Rescue for Budding Gardeners: Love & Carrots
Laura Hayes
EDITORS’ PICKS Best Rescue for Budding Gardeners
Love & Carrots (202) 957-5683, loveandcarrots.com There’s never been a better time to grow your own food. Not only is gardening a hobby with the added benefit of a harvest, but putting your phone down and digging into the dirt is a welcome reprieve from refreshing Twitter to see what fresh hell 2020 has sprung loose. Recognizing that you can’t fake a green thumb, local company Love & Carrots developed programming to help newbies reach their goal of yard-to-table dining.
First, Love & Carrots works with you to design your garden, whether that’s clearing amply lit space to plant straight into the earth or constructing and installing raised beds complete with an irrigation system. From there, you fill out a questionnaire about what crops you’d like to grow in the spring, summer, and fall. Then it’s time to choose between two packages to help you maintain your oasis throughout the growing season. Select “garden maintenance” and an urban farmer will visit every two weeks to prune, fertilize, manage pests, and stake any veggies that are toppling over. You don’t have to be home. Each visit costs around $125. “Garden coaching,” on the
other hand, involves one-on-one gardening lessons every two weeks throughout the season and costs around $175 per visit. Choosing the latter better positions novice gardeners to eventually succeed on their own. Contracting Love & Carrots isn’t cheap. It cost $1,400 for the construction, installation, and planting of a single raised bed with an irrigation system, for example, and the twice monthly visits add up. But consider it an investment into what could sprout into a lifelong (and productive) pastime. Cucumbers, basil, okra, and shishito peppers performed well this year, while tomatoes largely ended up in squirrels’ tummies instead of in caprese salads. —Laura Hayes
Best Statehood Merch
‘51’ Hat districtofclothing.com OK, I’ll say it. Even though we’d like some voting representation in Congress posthaste, some pro-statehood merchandise— the tees, totes, hats, and posters any good yuppie’s got in their apartment or closet— can be, well ... corny, or at least overdesigned. Into the breach rushes my favorite piece of merch: District of Clothing’s “51” baseball cap. The Black-owned local brand has a couple of different statehood-related pieces of clothing, mostly shirts, but the hat

Best Place to Channel Your Anxiety Into Newfound Spirituality Online
Woo Woo Company woowooco.com If the past 6 months have shaken the very core of what you believe and how you navigate life, you’re not alone. DMV native Alice Hu founded Woo Woo Company last year to connect D.C.’s spiritual seekers and create an accessible entry point into all things woo for the skeptical and curious. Since the pandemic began, Hu has taken all events online and also launched a membership program for those looking for community and accountability in their healing journey. Join a virtual chakra-aligning yoga session, a healing sound bath, or an expert talk on astrology, Human Design, or spirit guides, or dip your toe into the spiritual waters with her podcast, Into the Woo. This month Woo Woo Company will also begin offering a mentorship program based on Hu’s own experience sifting through the world of holistic health and self-help to find her authentic path. So if you can no longer ignore the existential dread that used to be quelled with happy hours and keeping busy, and the little voice in your head that whispers “there’s got to be more than this” is getting louder, why not explore a new paradigm. This dimension is a bummer. —Elizabeth Tuten
Best Surprises
Capitol Hill Books Mystery Boxes 657 C St. SE, (202) 544-1621, capitolhillbooks-dc.com Among the more pleasurable ways to pass time before the pandemic was wandering
into a store and aimlessly browsing through its offerings. Among the best places to do so was Capitol Hill Books, the long-tenured bookshop near Eastern Market packed from floor to ceiling with literary treasures. With the store currently only open by appointment, its staff quickly transitioned to doing the browsing for customers who couldn’t shop in person. Buyers simply input their favorite authors and titles, address, and how much they want to pay into an online form and mark whether they want to see a picture of their stack before it’s shipped. Then they wait for the surprise. From this limited information, the staff somehow intuits exactly what you need. A form that listed Jhumpa Lahiri, E.B. White, and Nora Ephron as favorites, for example, yielded Lorrie Moore’s Birds of America, a Jonathan Franzen essay collection, and James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time, books that were unexpected and yet essential. The boxes don’t quell the desire to spend hours exploring CHB’s stuffed shelves—in fact, it might even heighten the desire—but it’s a welcome substitute as you carry your new reads from couch to porch to bed. —Caroline Jones

Best Way to Acquire Booze
Magruder’s Curbside Pickup 5626 Connecticut Ave. NW, (202) 686-5271, magrudersofdc.com Online alcohol delivery apps have made it bearable, if not necessarily enjoyable, to spend the majority of your time indoors. Sure, you can’t hang out at a cocktail bar all night, but acquire some bourbon, red vermouth, and bitters, and you can make yourself a perfectly serviceable Manhattan. Unfortunately, some apps pile on service fees or force you to make multiple transactions in order to get everything you want. How do you simplify booze buying without forsaking variety? The answer is Magruder’s, the local grocer that’s been around since 1875. (The red awning at the back entrance of its Chevy Chase store looks like it’s been hanging for nearly as long.) Place an order on its clunky but fully functional website for whatever you fancy and in less than four hours, store staff will email you with a notice that it’s ready for pickup. Then just drive to the parking lot, call the store to tell them you’ve arrived, and pop your trunk. An employee will load your vehicle

is by far the best. It’s simple, but its message is clear, especially around here. If someone doesn’t get the message, let the hat serve as an excuse to educate them about taxation without representation. It’s high quality, and you can throw it in your washing machine without worrying about the embroidery in the front, a relief for any of us with especially sweaty foreheads, even at the tail end of summer. It doesn’t make any assumptions about other U.S. regions or territories (statehood for D.C. and statehood for Puerto Rico are two very different propositions). It’s just asking, politely enough but with a bit of an edge, for 51 states and another star on Old Glory. —Emma Sarappo

Getting a haircut at Georgie’s Barber in Takoma Park is cool no matter what, thanks to a top-notch cutting crew and a punk/metal/alt-rock soundtrack. But the best part of the whole joint is the bathroom. That’s because owner Ian Palmiero artfully decorated the commode with vintage ’80s action figures, many from a sprawling personal collection his wife demanded he get out of their house. Some of the characters are instantly recognizable: He-Man and Skeletor, Rambo, Pee-wee and some of his friends from the Playhouse, Hulk Hogan, and Boba Fett. Even more engaging are the 36 september 18, 2020 washingtoncitypaper.com
lesser-known figures, which require an impressive, perhaps frightening, knowledge of pop culture to correctly identify, like those from M.A.S.K. (which stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand— bonus points if you knew that). The G.I. Joe-meets-Transformers animated TV series ran for just two seasons in the middle of the Me First Decade, following an elite squadron of bad asses riding transforming weapons-laden vehicles, who take on V.E.N.O.M. (Double bonus points if you knew that’s an acronym for Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem). The world may have largely forgotten it, but not Palmiero. And that’s a good thing. His mega-fanboy micro museum will send you down a digital rabbit hole to rediscover old episodes or find some figures to display at your own place. Just don’t forget you’re there for a haircut and end up missing your appointment. —Nevin Martell

EDITORS’ PICKS Best Dog Park for Skittish Dogs
Bundy Dog Park 5th and P streets NW, bundydogpark.org Maybe you, like seemingly everyone else you know, added a furry friend to your family during the pandemic. Maybe your new pet can sense the unease in the air, or perhaps they’ve missed out on crucial opportunities to socialize with other canines while we’ve been stuck inside, but they seem a little bit nervous. Maybe even older dogs have, like so many of us, forgotten how to interact with others. If you need your skittish friend to burn off some energy, turn to Bundy Dog Park. Whereas there’s nowhere to hide from the tornado of running dogs in
larger, more square parks, this long, skinny gem makes it easy to find an unperturbed bit of park. From the safety of the park’s far end, you and your dog can venture, ever so bravely, out into the world. —Will Warren
Best Grass on Which to Have a Socially Distanced Picnic
Gravelly Point George Washington Memorial Parkway, Arlington, (703) 289-2500, virginia.org/ listings/OutdoorsAndSports/GravellyPoint There’s nothing like the sun shining on your picnic blanket in the summertime, especially when outdoor picnics are one of
Best Dog Park for Skittish Dogs: Bundy Dog Park the only ways to safely socialize in a global pandemic. But it can be hard to choose somewhere to sit when everyone in the city has the same idea on a nice day. While it may not be as lush as other parks in our fair metropolitan area, Gravelly Point is the perfect location. Let’s acknowledge some of its downsides upfront: Yes, the planes approaching National Airport are incredibly loud. Yes, there are only, like, three trees to provide any semblance of shade. Yes, the grass is prickly as hell. But it’s so large that the parking lot can be entirely full and you’ll still be able to maintain a comfortable 10-foot radius from all other parties. If you don’t want to deal with parking, take a nice bike ride down the Mount Vernon Trail to meet your friends. Watching the planes land, even if they’re loud, is pretty cool—
they wobble so much in their last minutes of descent, which you’d never know from the cabin! And the wind coming from the planes and off the water will completely obliterate any virus-laden droplets. Just make sure to bring lots of sunscreen and a big, wide hat. —Emma Sarappo
Best Exhibition of Patience
Nyasha Smith Zoom can confound the best of us, what with the screen sharing and the hand raising and the muting and un-muting, but imagine trying to enforce legislative order over video conference. That’s what happened to the staff of the D.C. Council

when the city shut down midway through a legislative session. Three weeks after Mayor Bowser declared a public health emergency, the Council had its first Zoom meeting, with Secretary to the Council Nyasha Smith doing much of the facilitating. During meetings held in the Council Chamber, Smith records the votes and makes sure everything proceeds according to Council protocol. On Zoom, Smith does all that while ensuring the councilmembers know how to participate in a video conference. Anyone who’s watched one of the virtual Council meetings knows that some of our dear elected officials have not mastered the art of Zoom legislating, and the results have been comical. While those of us watching from our living rooms laugh out loud as Council Chairman Phil Mendelson grows increasingly frustrated, Smith is the picture of calm. She reminds those confused where the mute button is and captures their votes without emitting even a chuckle or the slightest groan of exasperation. Her amusement is only apparent in a sly smile seen when a councilmember attempts to cast a vote silently. May we all try to channel her patience the next time we encounter a muted colleague in a long meeting. —Caroline Jones
It’s hard to believe it, given everything that’s happened in both the basketball and real worlds, but this was the first season the Wizards played without Ernie Grunfeld at the helm of the organization in more than a decade. The Wizards and Grunfeld parted ways in April 2019, approximately 300 years ago. In the intervening centuries, the Wiz have acquired sharpshooter Davis Bertans, drafted a promising rookie in Rui Hachimura, seen Bradley Beal take another step toward superstardom, and borne witness to videos of a rehabbing John Wall dunking. None of this culminated in success in the NBA’s Orlando bubble, of course, but Wizards fans can’t complain— they got what they’ve been asking for. —Will Warren

Best Fish
Rona the pufferfish Rona, an 8-month-old, 5-inch pufferfish with 26,500 followers on Instagram captured our lonely hearts and restless minds after her human, Joe Kogan, put signs up throughout the District advertising his fish as a cure for quarantine boredom. Honestly, the fish’s Insta doesn’t disappoint. The best posts are the ones in which she devours whole crawfish. She also eats mussels, clams, and snails, Kogan says. Followers have submitted drawings, and Kogan posts memes of Rona wearing shades, talking on the phone, and “dunking” on “Craw Gasol” to mark the beginning of the NBA Playoffs. Like a good influencer, Rona has participated in a collab with local cellist Andrew Savoia. The fish mostly just swims around while Savoia plays a version of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” on the cello, but the video has more than 11,400 views. One super fan even got Rona’s likeness tattooed right on their scalp. I guess that’s how you know you’ve made it? —Mitch Ryals

Best Use of the Mute Button: Vince Gray
Best Use of the Mute Button
Vince Gray “You’re muted, Mr. Gray,” became a familiar refrain in D.C. Council meetings since they went completely virtual in April. The polite reminder from Chairman Phil Mendelson to his longtime colleague, Ward 7 Councilmember Vince Gray, grew into exasperation, and then settled into a routine as the weeks wore on and Gray continued to fumble. At one point, Gray’s tech troubles grew so great that he attempted to yell
48 september 18, 2020 washingtoncitypaper.com
loud enough to overcome his muted microphone, thereby encapsulating the loneliness, frustration, and hysteria that have defined our new collective realities. The climactic moment came in the form of a phone call during a legislative meeting in late July. Gray answered his phone, apparently unaware that he had failed to mute himself. “Goddamn shit is conf using as a motherfucker, man,” he said. If Gray’s attempts to overpower the mute button captured our general feelings toward the onslaught of Zoom calls, his phone call was pitch perfect. —Mitch Ryals
In the days and weeks following the protests over the killing of George Floyd, many organizations, including sports teams, hurried to issue a public message of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. A number of the team-issued statements felt hollow, and were rightfully criticized for their corporate speak and not specifically calling out anti-Black racism and police brutality. The Wizards and Mystics were not one of those teams. In contrast, a joint statement the Washington Wizards and Washington Mystics released on June 6 forcefully demands justice for Black lives. “The recent senseless race-driven murders that have gripped our nation are horrific … We stand against any and all injustice, prejudice, discrimination, police brutality, and racism,” it reads. That statement came less than a week after a widely praised series of tweets written by Wizards players that ended with the words, “We will not shut up and dribble.” On Juneteenth, Mystics guard Natasha Cloud and Wizards All-Star Bradley Beal organized a player-led march from Capital One Arena to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the Tidal Basin. Beal shared stories of his own interactions with law

Best Way to Piss Off Mayor Bowser
Leading a city through an unprecedented global pandemic is no easy task, and certainly not one that I would take on willingly or by happenstance. Mayor Muriel Bowser currently finds herself in the latter scenario. Throughout the pandemic, Bowser has held almost daily press conferences where she gives updates on her administration’s response and fields questions from reporters. Early on, Bowser and her administration resisted repeated requests to release data on positive cases and deaths broken out by race and geography. Similarly frustrating were Bowser’s answers to questions seeking clarification on her executive orders. To wit: As plans for the March on Washington began taking shape, WJLA reporter Sam Ford asked Bowser how her order requiring all who travel into the District from hotspot states to quarantine for two weeks would

affect out-of-towners coming to D.C. for the march. “It doesn’t,” Bowser said, adding that “if the travel advisory is in effect on August 28th … then it will be in effect for people who travel to the District.” “So you’re saying people who are coming to this march, they need to quarantine in D.C. two weeks before this event?” Ford asked. “No, I didn’t say that,” Bowser said.
“What I said is if there are people who would be coming from jurisdictions that are on that list, they would need to be quarantined.” Ford again asked whether that meant marchers would need to arrive in D.C. two weeks ahead of time, and after another brief back-and-forth, Bowser abruptly ended the show without providing specific guidance. —Mitch Ryals

Best Way to Piss Off Mayor Bowser: Ask her to clearly state how she intends to enforce her executive orders 50 september 18, 2020 washingtoncitypaper.com
All the great villains have that one moment. It’s the scene at the end of the movie when our heroes, exhausted and tattered from a well fought battle, limp slowly away into the sunset. They’ve won. Good triumphed over evil. Order is restored. All’s right with the world. But then the camera pans back toward the wreckage, and a sinister soundtrack comes on. The rubble begins to stir and a single clenched fist emerges, shaking with fury, hungry for vengeance or something like that. Absent the theatrics, former Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans’ announcement of his plans to run for the seat from
which he’d resigned only weeks prior is akin to his fist-out-of-rubble moment. The District’s longest serving councilmember officially resigned in January in order to avoid certain expulsion. By the end of the month, he proclaimed himself the best candidate to fill the seat for another four years despite his past and ongoing ethics investigations. Voters decisively rejected Evans at the ballot box in June. His rebranding as an ethics reformer with the financial experience to navigate the District’s budget shortfall clearly could not overshadow the damage to his reputation. Following the primary loss to a relatively unknown outsider, Brooke Pinto, Evans told the Washington Post that he’s ready to start a new chapter. “I don’t know what that is, but I’ll be heading in a different direction,” he said. —Mitch Ryals

Best Street Where You Almost Forget You Live in a City
2000 Block of Park Road NW The 2000 block of Park Road NW will swallow you whole, and you should let it. The tall trees cave in and block the sun, so it is a cool walk even in 100-degree heat and humidity. The sidewalk is raised, away from all the street noise. The street is long enough for you to get a good walk in and forget you are in D.C. You can get lost looking at the eccentric porches and admire how people make use of their space. D.C. is dense, so backyards are small or nonexistent. Front porches and yards can also be a place where people grill and enjoy a family meal. And then suddenly, at the end of the block, is the entrance to Rock Creek Park. Now you can really get out of the city. Enjoy. —Amanda Michelle Gomez

Despite not holding elected office, he still holds many opinions. DelleDonne’s civic association weighs in on zoning cases, Council candidates, street cleanups, and, perhaps most notably, the proposed apartment building near the Masonic Temple. DECAA, as it’s known, filed a lawsuit to stop the development. A

everyday around 10 a.m. and share terrible news: Another resident passed away from the invisible virus, and dozens more residents tested positive. For residents who want to return to some semblance of normalcy, they see D.C. is far from meeting critical health metrics needed to further reopen the economy, and for residents who feel like we are moving too fast, they see “Phase 2” and sweat knowing indoor activities like dining are allowed. It’s bleak, and the numbers are small, which can prompt another headache. You could spend a lot of time on DC Health’s dashboard, finding discrepancies as I do, and tweet them out. But for all the headaches, the dashboard
The breaking point for Dan Snyder didn’t come when Native American activists spent decades demanding that he change his football team’s name. Snyder didn’t suddenly become filled with empathy amid the wave of protests against antiBlack racism and violence this summer. Nope. In the end, it was the objections of a multi-billion dollar corporation—FedEx— that forced Snyder to admit defeat and abandon the team’s racist moniker. In 2013, Snyder vowed to “NEVER” change the name. Fast forward seven years, and FedEx, which pays the organization around $8 million per year for the naming rights to the Landover stadium where the team plays, said it would back out of the deal, which expires in 2027, early if the name was not changed. FedEx chairman and CEO Frederick Smith is also a minority owner of what is now temporarily called the Washington Football Team and has been trying to sell his shares. In early June, President Donald Trump sent federal law enforcement and military units to D.C. streets in response to the unrest that erupted after a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd in late May. Mayor Muriel Bowser countered the federal intervention with a street mural that says “BLACK LIVES MATTER” painted in big yellow letters across 16th Street NW, just north of the White House. The national media, accordingly, ate it up. Bowser even delivered D.C.’s roll call vote during the Democratic National Convention from a balcony with the mural in the background. “You can’t just paint those words behind me,” she said. “We can’t just say those words. We have to live those words. We have to undo the laws and systems that have codified racism for far too long.” Locally, though, Bowser’s critics were quick to call out the mayor’s gesture as hollow and performative. Bowser endorsed Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s presidential campaign, for example, despite his longtime defense of the NYPD’s stopand-frisk program that specifically targeted Black and Brown people. Bowser’s proposed 2021 budget increased funding for MPD, despite calls from local activists to defund the police. Most recently, Bowser proclaimed herself a law-and-order mayor and criticized federal prosecutors for declining to file charges against “outside agitators” accused of violence during recent protests. Protesters’ additions of “Defund the Police” to the street mural continue to be painted over. —Mitch Ryals
