AN INVITATION FROM THE PRESIDENT As President of Washington & Jefferson College (W&J), I am pleased to welcome you to the Washington Fellows honors program.
The Washington Fellows honors program invites those who embody the core values of W&J as described in the mission statement to join a distinctive community of scholars. As an introduction to the program, Washington Fellows Scholarship Weekend allows prospective Fellows and their families a unique opportunity to experience how we teach and learn at W&J as well as to meet current students, faculty and staff, and become familiar with campus. Fellows are welcome across all disciplines and majors. The Washington Fellows honors program promises the best of a liberal arts and sciences education—problem-solving, critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills— along with basic knowledge of history, philosophy, science, math, languages, and art so that you are prepared not only for your first job, but for a lifetime of success. The decision to become a dedicated, lifelong learner is an important one, and I hope you will take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity. Welcome to the Washington Fellows honors program and to this great adventure.

THE PROGRAM The Washington Fellows is an honors program at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) designed for exceptional students who are interested in challenging themselves in their years at W&J. This program is for outstanding students who desire a deep engagement in the liberal arts and sciences, both as ends in themselves and as engines of change in the world. Toward this end, Washington Fellows will be afforded unique opportunities to interact with distinguished faculty and alumni, visiting lecturers and dignitaries, the W&J senior administration, and the Board of Trustees throughout their time at the College. During their first year at W&J, Washington Fellows will be invited to participate in the President’s Symposium
led by Dr. Tori Haring-Smith, W&J’s 12th president. The topics for the symposium will vary from year to year but will involve contemporary as well as timeless issues like “Gender and Identity,” “Race in America,” and “Robots and the Question of What it Means to be Human.” During their sophomore year, Washington Fellows will attend special networking events with alumni, members of W&J’s Board of Trustees, including Fortune 500 CEOs, successful entrepreneurs, international business people, and renowned physicians, lawyers, and educators. These experiences will allow Fellows to connect their classroom learning with future career aspirations. Washington Fellows will cap their experience with a graduate-level honors thesis or project in their area of expertise under the careful guidance of an individual faculty member. Fellows will have access to funding that can be used to support their individual research activities or to defray expenses of presenting their work at regional, national, or international conferences. Washington Fellows exemplify the mission and values of W&J. They are lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and prepared to contribute significantly to the world today. In addition, they embody the core values of W&J including integrity, honesty, respect, intellectual rigor, responsibility, diligence, and courage.

I don’t think my education here is defined as much by me being a philosophy major as it is my liberal arts studies. These classes teach you how to think through problems, how to form arguments and how to organize thoughts.
