Entrepreneurial Spirit Provides Dividends Catherine Hadley Truman Scholarship winner Catherine Hadley says time well spent at Washtenaw Community College played an integral role in her becoming the 28th University of Michigan student to earn the prestigious honor. A former high school dropout who had pursued some entrepreneurial ideas, Hadley spent two-and-a half years on the WCC campus—first reacclimating herself to education, then compiling transferrable credits at the college’s low tuition rate while following its General Studies transfer program. During her years as a full-time WCC student and mother of two, Hadley founded BirthSafe.org, a nonprofit organization that gathers information about birthing providers and facilities while advocating for legislation that uplifts and empowers patients. It’s those kind of public service leadership qualities that would earn her the $30,000 Truman Scholarship. Hadley earned the scholarship while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Sociology at the University of Michigan and will use its award to pursue a master’s degree in Social Work from U-M. “None of this would be possible without my time at Washtenaw Community College. I had such a transformative experience while on campus,” Hadley says. “It is truly the foundation of what I do and hope to achieve in my life.” Hadley is living proof that a community college can be the launching pad for an exceptional educational journey. Her’s is culminating with one of the premier graduate-level fellowships in the United States. “I think being a community college student actually set me apart and made me a more dynamic candidate,” Hadley asserts. “I come from a different background than a lot of the applicants and have had more life experiences. They understand I’m coming at it from * Classes eligiblelens, for continuing education contact a veryare different and that lens is valuable.” hours by the Michigan Social Work Collaborative.

SBDC SPOTLIGHT

Mary Cambruzzi Owner of Found — ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN What started as a hobby for Mary Cambruzzi evolved into a booming retail business. Creating a space that sold work by local artists, vintage finds and pieces made with reclaimed materials, Found opened in 2005. With a deep passion and a little help, Found has endured. Cambruzzi works closely with Ron Stevens, associate regional director and business consultant at the MI-SBDC Greater Washtenaw Region, based at WCC, building strategies for growth, annual budgeting, retail and training practices, and staffing plans—which has helped her sales triple over the years. “Ron was instrumental when we were looking at spaces. He helped us understand the financial breakdown from a lens of what we needed to sell to be a sustainable retail business,” says Cambruzzi. “The most challenging part was managing the build-out and securing loans. Ron guided us through these aspects of the expansion. “Found has really become an important part of the neighborhood, as a destination for locals and people from all over the region,” says Cambruzzi.

Shou Sugi Ban Workshop Originating in Japan in the 1600s, shou sugi ban is an ancient Japanese technique for waterproofing and preserving wood. Traditionally, three planks were wired together to form a triangular tube and placed over a small fire. Once the surface was significantly charred, the planks were removed, extinguished, scrubbed clean, and then sealed with an oil. This method is sustainable and safe, as it does not use chemicals to finish timber. Recently, shou sugi ban has increased in popularity among architects and designers, for both its aesthetics and its green nature.

ART THROUGH THE AGES SERIES Art is the visual expression of the human experience. Artists throughout the ages have been products of their times and visionaries. This richly illustrated art history series explores the relationship between art and culture. Each class is self-contained. Choose your favorites, or enroll in all of them. ART through u the AGES u Prehistoric

ART through u the AGES u Renaissance

What sets humans apart from animals is, among other things, the making of art. In this class, we will explore the beginnings of art making from the well-known cave paintings in France and Spain dating back to 40,000 BCE, to the little-known prehistoric temple architecture of Gobekli Tepe in Turkey, dating back to 10,000 BCE.

Follow the money, and you will see where the development of the arts progressed. The rise of a new merchant class in Italy brought forth a new class of patrons and shifted the focus from the sacred to the secular. The Renaissance is not only the rebirth of classical antiquity, but also the birthplace of an unparalleled number of artistic geniuses such as (Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo) who created art often considered the pinnacle of Western art.

Century

Where there is action, there is reaction. The arts of the 18th century reflect tumultuous times. The Industrial Revolution, political revolutions and the Enlightenment create conflict. Rococo, Romanticism, Neoclassicism and Realism all vie for a seat at the table, each with a different agenda, each with different artistic styles, sensitivities and subjects. ART 4020

and 20th Centuries

The pace of life is picking up. The revolutions of the 18th century brought social and political changes, and the arts did not lag behind. Long-held artistic rules are no longer binding. The Impressionists open the door to the 20th century where anything seems possible. We will explore the spirit of the times, and see how the giants of this era (Manet, Monet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and many others) are both powerful individual artists, and part of a new artistic movement. Even though the Roman Empire collapsed in the West, it continued for another 1,000 years in the East. This class will explore how the Roman Empire managed to reinvent itself as the Byzantine Empire in the East, exporting artistic forms from Pagan Rome and merging them with Christianity, thereby creating a spectacular and unique mix of art.

Mon 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Historical events can have a significant impact on the developments of the arts. It was the Protestant Reformation that changed the course of history and among other changes, brought the Renaissance to an end. Three powerful classes of patrons emerged (royalty, church, middle class) in this postReformation era and began to shape the subject matter of the arts and imbue art and architecture with new emotional fervor. Art becomes a propaganda tool.

Ages

The collapse of the Roman Empire created a political vacuum in Western Europe. We will see how Europe shifts to a new era, condescendingly called the “Dark Ages” and explore the bright spots of that time, in particular the activities surrounding the building of Gothic cathedrals. We will follow Christian art from the catacombs below ground to the glory of St. Peter’s Cathedral. ART 4020
