Codependency and Intimate Partner Abuse: Regaining Ownership of Self*
Developing an ethical base, one that incorporates the social work code of ethics, is key to proper casework and management and decision-making strategies. This class shows you how to properly address diverse legal situations. We will cover involuntary treatment and treatment rights, guardianship, informed consent, subpoenas, balancing legal and ethical issues as a petitioner, court testimony tactics and relationships with the probate court. We’ll also review end-of-life/advanced directives.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health issue. The role of codependence as an integral part of this dynamic is only peripherally understood and inadequately addressed in most therapeutic situations. IPV victims, regardless of sex, sexual preference or race, have a significant need for clinical intervention that identifies and addresses codependence issues. This seminar will help you teach your clients to recognize the eight early signs of a potentially violent relationship, the dynamics of codependency and IPV, and distinguish phases of violence through examining the power and control cycle. The workshop will include a discussion of the codependent thinking and behavior that perpetuate IPV.

WCC Alumnus Shoots for the Stars— and Becomes One Aisha Bowe Moments before accepting the 2021 Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Michigan Community College Association, Aisha Bowe shared a moment of reflection with her mother. “We talked about when I first started at WCC and how I didn’t know who I was, or where I was going or how I was going to get there,” said the 2006 WCC graduate. “Now people are thanking me for evangelizing about community college, but I feel like I should still be thanking them.” A self-described “unmotivated and unfocused” student in high school, Bowe found her passion while attending WCC from 2003 to 2006. She transferred to the University of Michigan, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and a master’s degree in Space Systems Engineering. She turned a three-month internship with NASA into a seven-year career as a mission and aerospace engineer. In 2013, she founded STEMBoard, an engineering solutions company that solves technology challenges for clients in the aerospace and defense industries. Bowe also has a passion to help close the opportunity gap in STEM fields among historically underrepresented youth worldwide—especially girls. That led to the creation of LINGO, a hands-on, self-paced coding kit that allows students to build at home. Bowe is quick to credit her community college experience for sparking her success. She told Forbes Magazine that earning an ‘A’ in a pre-algebra class at WCC is what put her on a path to becoming an aerospace engineer and tech entrepreneur. “Aisha Bowe is an extraordinary example of a community college success story,” said Michael Hansen, president of the MCCA. “We are excited to recognize her and all she has accomplished following her time at Washtenaw Community College.”

What started as a hobby for Mary Cambruzzi evolved into a booming retail business. Creating a space that sold work by local artists, vintage finds and pieces made with reclaimed materials, Found opened in 2005.
“Learned new techniques that will be helpful in my daily tasks. ”
With a deep passion and a little help, Found has endured. Cambruzzi works closely with Ron Stevens, associate regional director and business consultant at the MI-SBDC Greater Washtenaw Region, based at WCC, building strategies for growth, annual budgeting, retail and training practices, and staffing plans—which has helped sales triple over the years.

“Ron was instrumental when we were looking at spaces. He helped us understand the financial breakdown from a lens of what we needed to sell to be a sustainable retail business,” said Cambruzzi. “The most challenging part was managing the build-out and securing loans. Ron guided us through these aspects of the expansion.” “Found has really become an important part of the neighborhood, as a destination for locals and people from all over the region,” said Cambruzzi.

Frances Kai-Hwa Wang
| CREATIVE WRITING
Frances Kai-Hwa Wang is an award-winning journalist, essayist, activist, scholar and poet focused on issues of Asian Americans, race, justice and the arts. While her writing has appeared among numerous outlets, such as PBS NewsHour, Detroit Journalism Cooperative and Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, Wang confesses her first poem was written strictly for the payout. “When I was in high school, there was a poetry contest for $25 and publication in a book. The contest was for teen girls and the theme was about the transition into adulthood. I didn’t know anything about poetry, so I wrote what I thought looked like a poem with short lines and several stanzas. “My poem was about the ambivalence of leaving home and the fear of leaving my mom. I remember it had two columns—one about what I was saying out loud: brash and assertive; and another about what I secretly wanted to tell my mom: quiet and afraid. The thing is, I was so ready to leave home I didn’t actually feel any ambivalence at all. But $25 for a poem!”

Shou Sugi Ban Workshop Originating in Japan in the 1600s, shou sugi ban is an ancient Japanese technique for waterproofing and preserving wood. Traditionally, three planks were wired together to form a triangular tube and placed over a small fire. Once the surface was significantly charred, the planks were removed, extinguished, scrubbed clean, and then sealed with an oil. This method is sustainable and safe as it does not employ the use of chemicals to finish timber. Recently, shou sugi ban has increased in popularity among architects and designers for both its aesthetics and its green nature. HEC 4269 $79 | mandatory fee: $20
