Style Statements

EDITOR’S LET TER

Time Is Always in Fashion Watches (the pocket and pendant varieties) have been en vogue for centuries, long before Vogue, the magazine, was first published. The Queen of Naples famously commissioned Abraham-Louis Breguet to make her a highly jeweled timepiece with some heady complications. In those days, the accurate keeping of time was a luxury that only royals and the very wealthy could afford, and for women, it was considered un-ladylike to carry a watch, so many pieces were concealed in jeweled brooches and pendants. Fast-forward to the 20th century, the Duchess of Windsor proudly owned and wore many watches, including a Cartier pendant watch with a compass and sundial on the back, and a Van Cleef & Arpels Cadenas watch, which she wore with her legendary jewelry collection. The duchess’ contemporary, fashion designer Coco Chanel, also favored wristwatches, and was an early adopter of wearing trousers as a fashion statement. The house of Chanel honors her groundbreaking legacy this month by introducing the Boyfriend watch (read our exclusive story on page 96). For many men, a wristwatch is one of the few classically socially acceptable luxury adornments. While a watch is a valuable tool for everyday life, it is also an expression of the many aspects of a man’s personality, his hobbies, and his passions. Men have watches for business, sports watches for weekends (and days that they wish were weekends), and dress watches for nights on the town. In this issue, men in the business of fashion share their points of view on collecting. Fashion designer Michael Kors opens up about his personal timepiece collection, and how his Michael Kors watch collection is helping him fight world hunger. Italian fashion executive Enrico Libani also shares his unique view of how watches compliment his wardrobe. We are thrilled to share the classically exquisite new timepiece from Breguet, the Tradition 7077 (page 72). Breguet’s first exhibition in the United States opens this month at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor. It will certainly be worth a trip. I am happy to welcome associate travel editor Nate Storey to the Watch Journal team. Nate reveals fashionable hot spots in New York, Milan, and Morocco in our travel section (Play, Stay, Getaway, page 52). We hope you enjoy the issue!

A GRAND EXHIBITION

Patek Philippe celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2014, and the celebration continued with The Watch Art Grand Exhibition in London’s Saatchi Gallery this year. On display were Patek Philippe’s vast collection of in-house movements, the unique timepieces created for the 175th anniversary, and pieces on loan from the British Royal Family. The exhibit featured timepieses from the brand's heritage rarely seen in public before. ‘We brought so many historical timepieces to the exhibition that visitors were able to learn about horology generally,” Mark Hearn, Managing Director of Patek Philippe UK, explained. The exhibit was curated so that visitors would have the opportunity “to learn about the history of watchmaking, and also discover interesting information about this fascinating industry, which is not composed just of watchmaking, but also rare handicrafts techniques.” patek.com

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE In 1960, automotive legend Carroll Shelby faced hard-hitting obstacles. European cars dominated the racetrack and a heart condition ended Shelby’s short-lived but supremely successful driving career. Drawing upon Shelby’s racing success, Ford motor cars asked Shelby to develop a racecar that would propel American racing to the forefront. In 1965, Shelby’s team swept the FIA International Championship of GT Manufacturers with Shelby’s masterpiece, the Cobra. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Shelby’s breakthrough, Baume & Mercier recently released a limited edition timepiece. The stainless steel chronograph is limited to 1,965 pieces to commemorate the first victory, and only 98 pieces of the red gold model will be

made, in honor of Shelby’s Cobra racing number. The 44-mm case frames the Guardsman Blue dial; the chronograph subdials emulate the Cobra’s dashboard. The Cobra logo adorns the seconds hand while the hour and minute hands are inspired by the car’s steering wheel. The strap is made of black alligator with a red calfskin lining. The finishing touch: he watch’s sapphire crystal caseback is artfully engraved with Shelby’s signature. baume-et-mercier.com

Available in stainless steel and pink gold, the watch’s design includes a second time zone artfully merged with an extremely accurate indicator of the moon’s phases, which can be adjusted by a pusher at 8 o’clock. The Earth’s perfect magnetic geometry has inspired the graceful lines on the watch’s dial; subtly hidden in one of the stars of the Milky Way is the company’s logo. INDEPENDENT MOVEMENT Two seemingly different businesses and their leaders have come together to create the Big Bang Unico Italia Independent timepiece and its pair of matching glasses. Those two men are Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot, and Lapo Elkann, president of Italia Independent, an Italian design firm. The Unico movement, made up of 330 individually hand-assembled components, was designed and developed within Hublot’s manufacture. Its construction allows the addition of supplementary functions - the Unico movement can be fitted with other complications and modules, such as a flyback chrongraph, GMT or bi-retrograde chronograph. Both the timepiece and the glasses are coated with Texalium, a fiberglass-based fabric that has a proprietary finish and a thin coating of aluminum on the surface. hublot.com italiaindependent.com

When thinking about premier aerobatics, the ballet of the skies performed by a group of jet pilots, the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team, fills the bill. And when thinking about fine timepieces to complement aerobatics or any other activity you may choose, it’s undoubtedly the Breitling Jet Team American Tour Chronomat 44 timepiece, created to commemorate the team’s North American tour, a first. Matching the team in both power and style, this sturdy, sporty Breitling, in a limited edition of 500 pieces, exudes the Breitling Jet Team spirit. On June 18, 1815, the combined forces Duke of Wellington and Gebhard von Blücher led the Anglo-allied and Prussian army to victory over the infamous Napoleon Bonaparte and his French army in the Battle of Waterloo in present-day Belgium, thus ending over 20 years of war in Europe. Breguet has crafted timepieces for European potentates for centuries now, including Napoleon’s sister. Now, Breguet marks the bicentenary of this clash by acting as a major private sponsor of the conservation of the Hougoumont Farm, one of the last remaining historic sites of the battle and a representation of peace and stability in Europe. President and CEO of Breguet Marc A. Hayek, and HRH Prince Charles were among the prominent guests and European royalty who attended the inauguration of this landmark. The ceremony concluded with a symbolic handshake between the Duke of Wellington, Prince Blücher von Wahlstatt and Charles Bonaparte, Prince Napoleon. breguet.com RIGHT: The Breguet Number 178 travel clock BELOW: Prince Charles attends the event OPPOSITE: Marching on Hougoumont Farm

“Our watchmakers follow an upward progression in our manufacture. They learn from our most trained masters to themselves become mentors. The exchanges are continuous and fuel our creativity.” - Daniel Riedo our watches but these are only a few hints. There will be much more to it.” With clients all over the world, it can be quite challenging to develop timepieces that have universal appeal. “We are a global brand having clients all around the world shopping in our 78 boutiques,” Riedo details. “Although we find the markets to be changing faster than in the past, our sales remain strong. We are continuing to invest in the development of new designs, new watchmaking features and more. This is what we are known for and we will keep doing it in the months and years to come.

41

In recent years High Watchmaking has kept increasing its power of attraction. Luxury clients are looking to live more intensely but without conspicuous spending. Our Maison offers timepieces of unmatched history and content.” Some people might find the weight of history to add pressure, but for Riedo, it makes the job that much more pleasurable. “Jaeger-LeCoultre is such a wonderful challenge,” he says with a smile. “The Manufacture is among the inventors of modern timekeeping and each day we thrive to reinvent it and to perfect ourselves” Born in Switzerland, Riedo has been aware of watches since he was a young boy. “What I love about watches is the harmony between the mechanism, the function and the design,” he explains. “This is what makes a great watch an icon. A watch must tell a story and be an inspiration for the man or woman who wears it. My interest in watches came from the mechanisms that are so complex in search of perfection and from the dream that timepieces carry with them.” A great dream indeed. -Keith W. Strandberg

DANIEL RIEDO

An engineer by training with a degree in corporate management, Daniel Riedo joined Jaeger-LeCoultre in 2011 as Industrial Director, and was appointed to his current position in 2013. “Jaeger-LeCoultre is a 182 year old Manufacture and the brand’s inventiveness and heritage characterizes our Maison,” Riedo explains. “The level of independence we enjoy in our production facilities sets us apart from other brands who struggle to find suppliers for their parts - we don’t have this issue. In addition, with our range of timepieces, from simple models to the most extraordinary Hybris Mechanica, our watchmakers follow an upward progression in our manufacture. They learn from our most trained masters to themselves become mentors. The exchanges are continuous and fuel our creativity.” Riedo’s favorite collection is the Reverso. “Every day is a new adventure,” he says. One of my favorite recent projects is the 85th anniversary of our iconic Reverso watch, which we will celebrate in 2016,” Riedo says. “We have some very interesting surprises to present to our clients in the coming year, notably in terms of ladies’ designs and with some automatic movements to equip

the watch I wear. We have more orders for this watch than we can deliver. “With Escale, I wanted a watch that spoke the language of Vuitton in every detail. The Vuitton trunks inspired the case shape, and I chose the special color scheme.” For Chatti, working with the right team is vital to success. “I don’t know whether I am successful or not, but it’s all about passion,” he says. “I need to make sure the people in the company share my passion.” The diversity of his job is something Chatti enjoys. “When I speak to designers in Paris and Switzerland one day, then two days later I am in Japan talking to our boutique salespeople, then a few days later I am in Capri, Italy, talking to a client about customizing a watch, it’s always about watches and jewelry, but it’s never the same,” he explains. Chatti has succeeded in making Louis Vuitton different from any other watch company, but he’s not done yet. “My mission is to establish Louis Vuitton as a serious player within this industry,” he says. “We are wellknown for so many things, but I want Louis Vuitton to be famous for watches and fine jewelry too.” -Keith W. Hamdi Chatti, Vice President, Watch and Jewelry of Louis Vuitton, has watches in his DNA. “When you are born Swiss, as I was, you have many watches,” he says. “The watch I really remember and I still have is the first Swatch from 1982. My parents bought it for me on Swissair. I was the first one in my class to have it, so this was special for me. I could go to school and to the beach with that watch. It was cool and the perfect watch for me at the time. “I am a micro-technical engineer by trade, so I like little things that work together,” he continues. “Watches are the best because you can wear them every day. I am fascinated by watches: When you think about it, timekeepers were invented more than 500 years ago, and they haven’t changed all that much, but they have changed the world. Watches are one of the few things man can produce that change the way people live.” The name Louis Vuitton has been synonymous with luxury for more than a century. Its foray into watches is relatively recent in its 160-year history: It launched the Tambour collection in 2002. With Chatti at the helm, the company has approached its watch creation with the same dedication to excellence as its other products. “We design movements that are authentic to what we stand for, which is all about

When the performance was over, Lang Lang shared his experiences as a worldrenowned musician with me in his native language. “I started to play piano when I was three years old,” he says in clear, unaccented Mandarin. “My mother and father bought a piano, so I really had no choice in which instrument I played. But I loved playing the piano.” When he was five, he won first place at the Shenyang Piano Competition and was asked by his mother if there were any bigger, more challenging contests. “Like national contests?” she remembers asking. “Yes,” he replied without any hesitation. He and his mother then moved to Beijing for better instruction, and better competition. The secret to his success? “Having a clear goal, and practice, practice, practice,” he answers. “I love the piano. It’s a complete instrument.” As the most famous musician in China, Lang Lang spends most of his time traveling around the world. He has played in Carnegie Hall, at the Grammy Awards (with Metallica in 2014 and with Pharrell Williams in 2015), at the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and for President Obama at a White House State Dinner. With such a schedule, he has “a Steinway piano waiting

When I was 16, I saved up all my money—I would draw caricatures at Sweet 16s and Bat Mitzvahs, and I even sold a few jean designs to my friend’s father’s company—and I bought my first watch-a Cartier Tank. I was always fashion-obsessed. My favorite watch is a black Bamford-customized Rolex. When it comes to luxury, nothing beats personalization and customization, because it becomes more than a purchase—it’s an experience. Of course, the Cartier Tank watch will always be special because it was one of my first truly luxurious purchases. Our Michael Kors Watch Hunger Stop watches are also very special to me because they’re a daily reminder that I’ve been able to use this platform I’ve been given to make a change in the world. For every one of these watches sold, we help the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) deliver 100 meals to children in need through their school meals program. We wanted the watches to look great, but we also wanted them to be conversation-starters and to help us spread our Watch Hunger Stop message around the world. Each year, we change up the design slightly—a different shape or different colors— but the details are the same. The face of the watch features a map of the world, and the back features the message 1 watch = 100 meals, along with my signature. This way, not only are our customers reminded every day when they put on the watch that they’ve helped contribute to a great cause, but it also becomes a topic of conversation. This year’s limited-edition watches are based on our popular Bradshaw watch and will be available in two different colors—black with silver hardware and an allgold version. I’ve been very fortunate in of my life, and I think it’s important to use that good fortune for good. I started on a smaller scale more than 20 years ago through a local New York organization called God’s Love We Deliver which prepares and delivers meals to people in need in the New York area. As I continued to travel the world, I saw the extent to which hunger is a global problem. But it’s also a solvable problem, and I’m a very results-oriented person. Watch Hunger Stop is focused on raising funds and awareness for the WFP in their work to create a world with zero hunger. - As told to Hyla Bauer

of complications, but at the same time, it doesn’t look too complicated. I like to wear my Patek with sportier clothes and my Daytona with suits. It’s a little bit of the opposite of what the common wisdom would dictate in the sense of the Daytona: It’s a sportier watch but I like it more with suits, when I’m more formally dressed. I like the Patek when I’m wearing a sport jacket, because otherwise the Patek is too formal. At the end of the day, they are all toys we enjoy. There is not a meeting we have with our customers that the conversation doesn't very often touch upon watches. Yesterday one of our clients was wearing the 1958 or 1959 Rolex Submariner James Bond. Men don’t have much jewelry, and watches are something that captures their imaginations: Many of our clients are very passionate about their watches. It’s the artistry. The connection is the artistry of watchmaking, which we think is far more complex, of course, than the sewing and stitching of an Attolini jacket. I’m sure a watchmaker will say the same about us, so we complement each other.

49

Both are a labor of love and passion about quality and craftsmanship, which is the correlation, and we love that. I find that watchmaking is one of the most incredible crafts. It’s also one of the pure vertical operations of a company that starts with little particles and, at the end of the production line, results in an incredible machine, an incredible object that represents hours and hours and hours of painstaking, skilled labor. This is exactly the essence of what Cesare Attolini represents, and the passion we share with most of our clients is about celebrating craftsmanship. Watchmaking is definitely on our team. - As told to Hyla Bauer

My first watch was my Rolex Daytona, which dates back a few years. And my Rolex Submariner steel came next. I was on vacation in St. Barts in 1989 way before it became a fashionable place. I used to go between Christmas and New Year’s. My wife bought it from a jewelry shop called Little Switzerland in St. Maarten and they brought in from St. Maarten and she surprised me with it for my birthday. It’s my newest watch, but nevertheless it dates back almost 25 years. When I go to the beach, it’s my favorite watch. It’s resilient, you can wear it in the water and you don’t have to leave it on the beach. Just keep it on your wrist, and if there are no barracudas around, you’re safe (apparently, the steel’s reflection in the water attracts barracudas). I really fell in love with my Patek Philippe World Time because I think it’s a good balance between a formal and sporty watch, and it has some complications to it. I think a Patek should have at least some complications since it’s one of the most important watchmakers, and their specialization certainly is complications. I believe that this is the threshold

Powell not only collects watches, he wears them and thinks that’s one of the kicks of owning fine watches. “If you aren’t going to wear the watch and enjoy it, then it’s just not worth having,” he maintains. “Sometimes, we hold onto watches that were hard to get, but I think all of us should be turning our collection and buying new things. I don’t have a watch in my collection that I don’t wear. These days, I’m wearing my Zenith A385.” Powell’s love of fine watches led him to start his company in 2012, after working in finance. The company has grown 300 percent in the last year and now has 35 employees. It’s not surprising, that Powell has strong opinions about the Apple Watch, from its name (“An exceptional piece of technology, but it’s not a watch,” he says), to how he thinks it could dampen sales of both lower-priced brands, such as Citizen, Timex and Bulova, and even the more pricey watches from TAG Heuer, Oris and Tissot. “The Apple Watch could eat away at a bit of their business,” he says about the lower- and middlerange watch products. “There is no way that those watches can compete for real estate at that price point compared to the tech of the Apple Watch.” As for high-end watches and his favorite vintages, there’s no competition from Apple, Powell contends. “These are brands that have been around for hundreds of years and survived wars, depressions, recessions and more.” He maintains that due to their fine quality and dedicated collectors like him, they will continue to thrive. -Keith W. Hamilton was a timepiece lover before he started the firm, but now he is a certified collector. “We wanted to make selling pre-owned timepieces more efficient, both for the buyers and the sellers,” he explains. “For sellers, we offer a service that makes it safe and profitable, and for buyers we offer a product that has been serviced and certified by our five watchmakers on staff. Every watch that comes in, we authenticate and put through a 45 point inspection. We will then service it and refinish and do everything we can do to make it like new.” “I’ve always loved watches,” Powell admits. “Growing up, my dad had a great Rolex DateJust that he wore for 30 years. I was a watch appreciator then, but I am a deeply passionate watch collector and enthusiast now." Powell is a fan of vintage watches. “I have been heavily influenced by the vintage community,” he continues. “I personally think the peak of artistic quality of watches was in the pre-quartz days, so I am naturally attracted to watches from the 1950s – 1970s. I like to collect based on brand and movement.” Among his favorites are vintage Heuers and Zeniths (he owns an A385 and A386) and Seafarers (he has one of those, too). Powell is in the market now for a Dodane Type 20 and a Breguet. “There were so many exciting things going on [then],” he adds, “and the watches reflected that excitement.”

POLO BAR Ralph Lauren makes a star-studded debut in Midtown.

P L AY

By Elizabeth Ughetta Even in a city known for its vexatious restaurant reservations, Polo Bar redefines the meaning of “hard door.” Tucked behind the brand’s Fifth Avenue flagship, Ralph Lauren’s first New York culinary venture is the newest in a long line of celeb hangouts du jour that includes famed spots like 21 Club and Michael’s. On any given night the A-List works the low-lit dining room: Kanye West and Ralph Lauren posing for selfies; Woody Allen chatting with Barbara Walters; Rihanna ensconsed in a corner table next to gal-pal Naomi Campbell. Like its elite clientele, the restaurant’s equestrian theme is in full force. The upstairs lounge looks like a place Don Draper would tip back at, with its long oak-and-brass bar which serves fried olives and timeless cocktails—Vesper martini, white Negroni—in etched glassware, a mural inspired by Henry Koehler’s painting Polo at Deauville (the original hangs downstairs), and vintage English riding trophies. The aesthetic of the subterranean space feels like the designer’s catalogue come to life, from the billiard-green walls festooned with horse prints to the Lauren-designed staff uniforms to prop leather saddles and polo mallets. There’s even a homey fireplace and leather armchair in the mahogany reception area. Not everything is over the top, however, as the clubby comfort food is noticeably unfussy. Expect well-executed classics such as corned beef and Swiss on rye, chicken paillard, and the signature bacon cheeseburger made with beef from Lauren’s Colorado ranch. Also on the menu? Good, oldfashioned extravagance. ralphlauren.com RIGHT AND BELOW: The restaurant's cozy fireplace and wood-paneled dining room.

This is, without question, the year of Milan. The 2015 Expo Milano assured the global spotlight would shine on Italy’s style capital, bringing with it an expected 20 million visitors before the fête—a confluence of design, art, food, and fashion—ends its run on October 31. On the culture front, two big debuts made waves; the Museo delle Culture in the former Ansaldo factory, and Fondazione Prada, a new Rem Koolhaas-designed arts center that was once a distillery. Fresh off a $110 million renovation, the Excelsior Hotel Gallia, which was built in 1932, re-opened into a red-hot hotel scene (the Mandarin Oriental and Me Milan il Duca arrived this summer) in May. The Belle Époque building in Stazione Centrale was given a nuts-to-bolts update by Studio Marco Piva, who added a glass-and-steel modern wing and curated the 500-work art collection. The 182 rooms have a contemporary aesthetic, while many of the 53 suites are outfitted with vintage furniture pieces by famous Milanese designers like Giò Ponti and Vico Magistretti. With a cult pastry shop and designer boutique under his belt, Thierry Teyssier did what any stylish Parisian would do—head to Morocco. He opened the doors to Dar Ahlam in a 19th-century Kasbah in Ouarzazate, a small hamlet on the road from the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara known as the “door to the desert.” Flying the Relais & Chateaux banner, the hotel’s 13 individually designed suites and two-bedroom villa are fashioned with traditional Tadelakt walls, bamboo-and-olivewood ceilings, and wood-burning fireplaces. An international flavor permeates each room, from Indian artworks to Italian wool carpets to Moroccan cashmere shawls for chilly nights. Teyssier revived the public spaces to create the ultimate oasis. Breakfasts include pomegranates grown on-site and crepes made by Paris pâtissier Pierre Herme, which are served next to the sleek pool. The meticulously manicured gardens with almond trees were done by Louis Benech, the landscape architect behind the renovations of Tuileries and the Water Theatre grove at Versailles. A solarium and hammam are highlights at the spa. The pièce de résistance, however, is the Dar Ahlam Nomade tented camp, set among the cinnamon-hued dunes of the Sahara desert near the Algerian border. Here, guests take tea on kilim-covered cushions and dine on authentic tangia meat stews at candle-lit dinners under the stars; all in one of the most exotic settings in the world. relaisandchateaux.com

Breguet, as in Abraham-Louis Breguet, may be the most famous name in watchmaking. Inventor of the tourbillon movement and watchmaker to kings and queens in his day, Breguet was a dynamic pioneer, a revolutionary figure in watchmaking. “For me, historical figures are kept alive through the heritage they bequeath to us,” says Marc Hayek, president & CEO of Breguet, Blancpain and Jaquet Droz. “It is important for me to take inspiration from A.-L. Breguet’s genius. It’s not about recreating the watches he made, but about making watches that Breguet would make were he alive today.” The Breguet balance spring with terminal curve, the parachute, the constant force escapement and the signature Breguet design aesthetic (guilloché dials, Breguet hands in blued steel and more) are all Breguet inventions that are utilized by the brand to this day. Not bad for a gentleman who lived more than 200 years ago.

The Tradition Collection, 10 years old this year, is at the core of Breguet. Iconic, with its references to Breguet history and the cutting-edge movement innovations, the Tradition is the brand’s standard bearer. The collection was inspired by Breguet’s “subscription” watches, simple time-only watches that were sold via a brochure. Customers would make a down payment of one quarter of the price when the order was placed (called a “subscription” in the company ledger). Breguet sold almost 700 timepieces using this then-innovative method. “The Tradition Collection is a link between the past and the present,” says Hayek. “It was born from the merging of two exceptional eras in the development of the art of watchmaking, and it embodies Breguet’s DNA. The collection adopts and pays homage to the architecture of A.-L. Breguet’s first subscription and à tact (timepieces that tell the time by touch) watches.” “Merging tradition with modernity has been quite natural,” he continues. “A.-L. Breguet already found the appropriate balance two centuries ago, with a Baroque-inspired French style and movements benefitting from his many inventions. It’s important to be strong both visually and technically, and, as a great entrepreneur, he knew that.” Take, for example, the Tradition Tourbillon, which incorporates the fusée chain, the first sketch of which appeared in 1490, by none other than Leonardo da Vinci. Add to this the tourbillon invented by Breguet and the overcoil spring he also pioneered. Improved upon by modern-day innovations like the titanium balance, the silicium spiral and the power reserve indicator on the barrel itself, the Tradition Tourbillon showcases what makes Breguet unparalleled. Then there is the Tradition Automatique Seconde Rétrograde 7097, which showcases the retrograde seconds on the dial’s left side, again with the movement on top of the baseplate, in full view. The Tradition Chronographe Indépendant 7077 appears to be a very traditional chronograph until you look more closely. Unlike most chronographs which operate in conjunction with the watch’s time display, using the same power source and going train, the new Tradition Chronographe is completely independent. The standard time runs from a traditional barrel with 50 hours of power reserve and the chronograph runs at 5 Hertz, powered by a special flexed blade spring, which is charged when the wearer activates the reset-to-zero function. One pusher is dedicated to starting and stopping the chronograph, the other is for resetting it. With 20 minutes of chronograph function, the watch is ideal for accurately measuring short elapsed times. The tour de force of the Tradition Collection is the Tradition Répétition Minute Tourbillon 7087. The gong springs that Brequet invented in 1783 have been reworked and attached to the bezel to allow for maximum vibration, while the bezel is attached to the caseband by three pillars, to allow for free vibrations of the bezel and sapphire crystal. These innovations result in a deeper and fuller sound transmission-a dynamic improvement in this traditional, classic complication.

This year, the Legion of Honor of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco is organizing the largest independent exhibition of timepieces ever in the Americas, “Breguet: Art and Innovation in Watchmaking,” which opens on September 19 and closes the following year on Breguet’s birthday, January 10. It features more than 70 historic timepieces and measuring instruments created between 1775 and the 1940s, some of which have never been seen before by the public. “The exhibit demonstrates how Breguet developed the most technically advanced and beautifully designed pocket watches from the late 18th century,” says Martin Chapman, curator of European Decorative Arts and Sculpture at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “The exhibition shows examples of many different types of Breguet watches, clocks and marine chronometers. Breguet watches were the leading examples of watchmaking and watch design from the late 18th century until the early 20th century. We wanted to capture their special qualities.” “I want people to take away that the highly designed watch was as technically proficient as our contemporary smartphone,” Chapman continues. “Beautifully designed, the Breguet watch displayed all the known technical advances of its time.” While the exhibition is totally independent and organized by Chapman and the Legion of Honor, Breguet aided in sourcing the watches on display, many of which are kept in the brand’s private archives. “This is the first time that A.-L. Breguet’s work is the subject of a retrospective in a major American art museum,” Hayek says. “The watches and clocks that visitors will discover belong as much to the world of the decorative arts as they do to that of science and technology, and they look contemporary even though many are more than 200 years old. Hopefully, this exhibition will contribute to a dialogue between generations, appeal to art aficionados and technology enthusiasts, and pay tribute to all watchmakers.” TIME FOR THE FUTURE Breguet endeavors to honor the history of the brand while continuing to innovate as the master himself did. The Tradition Collection is the perfect example of Breguet’s mission –while looking classical, it is at the same time contemporary, while incorporating some of watchmaking’s most innovative technologies. “Breguet is for me the holy grail of watchmaking,” Hayek concludes. “Keeping the brand’s spirit alive opens the door to great possibilities. The house’s many accomplishments act as motivation to always do better. And of course, with this exhibition, we are glad to share Breguet’s cultural heritage and amazing history with the world.” -Keith W. Strandberg

Officine Panerai Hosts Sailing Experiences Tailored to Those Affected by Cancer. 90

Since its founding in 1860, Officine Panerai has been linked to the sea. As an auxiliary to its watchmaking success and in line with both its seafaring history and commitment to support communities with nautical ties, Panerai founded Sailing Heals for cancer patients and their caregivers. The four-year-old program offers them sailing trips on exceptional boats. “Panerai is about authenticity and passion. It doesn’t get more authentic and passionate than supporting people when they might be going through a difficult setback,” says Rafael Alvarez, president of Panerai North America. “We don’t just write a check like many other corporate sponsors. We are very much involved in Sailing Heals. It helps us express our brand values as does our sponsorship of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. It also helps us extend our passion for classic sailing in communities where we don’t host an annual regatta. We focus on the classic yachts, even while Sailing Heals hosts sails on many other beautiful sailing yachts and motor yachts. This program is all about the healing power of the sea.” Sailing Heals arranges engaging seafaring experiences for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers on beautiful vessels. Through its participation in classic yacht racing, Officine Panerai has arranged events on yachts at many North American ports. “We partner with expert volunteer sailors to offer our VIP patient guests and their caregivers a great day on the water,” explains Trisha Boisvert, the executive director of Sailing Heals. Boisvert and her staff work with hospitals, nurses and doctors to identify and invite patients who are in all phases of cancer treatment. If a person has had cancer in the last year, he or she qualifies to participate. Sailing Heals has also hosted patients in remission as well as those in the latter stages of the disease.

91

WA T C H J O U R N A L

Each Healing Sail, as they are called, starts with a get-together at a local yacht club where the passengers are introduced to the host captains and have lunch. Then the guests are assigned to boats and set sail for two to three hours. “We have 120 host captains registered in seven states encompassing 17 ports,” says Boisvert. “We’re adding Maryland and Charleston, South Carolina, this year. We focus on cancer patients and caregivers but we do host other groups, such as the Boston bombing survivors, who we take out every year. We receive a lot of word-of-mouth referrals, and the guests often suggest another group they think would benefit.” Panerai is proud to be the founding sponsor of Sailing Heals. “I like that we leveraged our relationships with a dedicated group of boat owners who share a passion for the sea with Panerai and participate in our classic yacht regattas every year. Together we built something that supports the communities where we host our regattas, and also other communities around the US,” adds Alvarez. “The program has gone a long way to fortifying our friendships and relationships with these men and women, and we get to meet new wonderful people through our Sailing Heals and lunches.”

AT FULL SAIL Something magical happens as soon as the boats head out to the open water. “About five minutes after being on the boat, you can see smiles appearing and they can leave their cares behind and just enjoy the day with their loved ones. They relax and get to know their captains and the other guests.” says Boisvert. “It gives people a great experience that will last long after the day is over. I spoke with a mother of small children in New York who has Stage 4 breast cancer. She’s looking forward to going out on the water with them so they can have another great memory as a family.” Panerai’s Alvarez joins the Sailing Heals excursions whenever he’s free. “When our VIP guests are comfortable on the boat and helping out the skipper with the lines and helming the wheel, they seem to relax and breathe in the fresh air,” he says. “All of their health worries seem to fall away. That is the best part of the experience.”

NOTHING BUT BLUE SKIES AHEAD Sailing Heals is just one of Panerai’s new ventures. For Sailing Heals, Panerai is looking to extend the program at other ports, leading to more frequent outings. “It would be gratifying to see Sailing Heals show a continued steady growth in ports where there are active host captains and philanthropic-minded yachting and sailing clubs,” Alvarez adds. “That will be fun to watch. I hope that Panerai will be there, helping put wind in their sails.” -Keith W. Strandberg panerai.com sailingheals.com

Coco Chanel-activist, fashion pioneer and feminist-was known for wearing pants before the majority of her peers found it socially acceptable in public. Her femininemasculine style paved a way for future generations of women to dress comfortably and express their own personal style, rather than conforming to the norm. She became known for her androgynous style and showed structured jackets in her collections. A Chanel jacket is considered a staple in the chic set and the style has remained at the forefront of fashion for decades. BOY MEETS GIRL Cut to 2015, and Chanel’s legacy of pioneering new styles has extended to the company’s newest timepiece debuting this month: the Boyfriend watch. The strong lines of this masculine-feminine design give it an adrogynous allure, something that Mlle. Chanel herself would have embraced, given her tendency to don a more masculine wardrobe. The watch’s rectangular shape also pays tribute to the design of the classic Chanel No. 5 bottle. POWER DRESSING Continuing the nod to the masculine, the new watch is being produced in two sizes. The larger model measures 37 by 28.6 mm, and is equipped with a manual-winding movement with a 42-hour power reserve and a small seconds indicator at six o’clock. The smaller model at 34.6 by 26.7 mm, is equipped with a quartz movement and a small date at six o’clock. Both models are available in the house’s signature 18 karat beige gold or white gold, with or without diamond-set bezels. -Hyla Bauer

Seeing Red

Red Is the Gold of Choice in Watchmaking. 105

“Rose gold has a warm, rich glow, which compliments many skin tones. For our most complex timepieces, rose gold gives a wonderful resonance to the minute repeaters.” -Larry Pettinelli The watch industry has been seeing lots of red in the last few years. But that’s not a bad thing. In fact, red, rose and pink golds are found in lots of newly created watches these days. Reddish golds are experiencing a renewed popularity in the luxury watchmaking world. All gold watches and jewelry are made of an alloy of gold and another metal or two because pure gold is too soft for practical use. Red gold and its variations look reddish because copper is added to the gold. The mix for most red gold is roughly 75 percent gold, 20 percent copper and 5 percent silver. All red gold eventually fades to yellow gold, because over time the copper atoms dissipate from the surface of the gold alloy due to exposure to the light, heat and moisture. But it’s only temporary: The red hue can be renewed when the metal is polished. Rolex and Omega have developed their own alloys that are more resistant to discoloration named Everose and Sedna respectively. Hublot has also introduced its darker-hued Magic Cold gold, which also repels some scratches because the alloy also contains ceramic.

THE ALLURE OF RED “There are a few reasons for red gold’s popularity,” says Armen Darakjian, the owner of Darakjian Jewelers. “For me, yellow gold is too loud. At first blush, I say it looks seventies-ish. Rose gold offers a softer approach, and unlike white gold, it can’t be misinterpreted as silver or stainless steel. Red gold is the perfect color for an executive who wants his or her precious metal piece to sneak out from under the cuff quietly.” Another reason for the reddish golds’ resurgence among collectors is “its nod to the historical pieces from years past,” says Larry Pettinelli, president of Patek Philippe North America. “It has a warm, rich glow, which compliments many skin tones. In our most complex timepieces, rose gold gives a wonderful resonance to the minute repeaters.” Pairing reddish gold with brown (dial and strap or both) gives the timepiece a warm, elegant quality; matched with black, reddish gold projects a technical, sporty, but still classy, look. Expect more luxury brands to expand their offerings in red gold. “Carl F. Bucherer has always used exquisite materials, including platinum, white gold and rose gold,” says Sascha Moeri, CEO of Carl F. Bucherer. “Rose gold radiates a noble character and adds a new, splendid dimension to these models. The response has been amazing.“ -Keith W. Strandberg

Hold Tight

More Than Just a Pretty Face at Hermès. 109

Straps used to be an afterthought, serving a vital purpose, but not seen as worthy of as much time and attention as other parts of the watch. But now the industry and collectors have noticed that a quality leather or exotic-skin strap can make a big difference, and straps have become a defining accessory for a fine timepiece. At the center of strap-making is Hermès, with its storied history of leather and skin craftsmanship dating back to 1837. Today Hermès makes each strap for its watches from start to finish. Laurent Dordet, president of La Montre Hermès, discussed the Hermès strap-production philosophy and process. A ‘NEW’ WATCH, THANKS TO A NEW STRAP “The strap is now an important part of the watch,” says Dordet. “From the hundreds of components that make up a watch (particularly a mechanical watch), it’s one of very few elements on display, other than the dial and case. Even more important, this is a part that you can easily change and that gives you the impression of having a new watch. A nice material, a special texture or color can transform the overall look of the watch, whether it’s sporty, classic or elegant.” In 2006 Hermès opened its leather-strap atelier in Brügg, Switzerland, at the workshops of La Montre Hermès to consolidate all the watch manufacturing under one roof. “It makes the creation and development process more effective as we can work closely with the craftsmen to bring out new possibilities in techniques and opportunities of creation,” says Dordet. “Moreover, the atelier is wonderful for visitors, as it is lined with windows.”

“The strap is one of very few components on display, other than the dial and case. This is the element you can easily change and that gives you the impression of having a new watch.” -Laurent Dordet BEGINNING WITH THE BEST In order to finish with a premium-grade product, you must start with the best, and that means selecting the finest skins. “The leather straps are of a very high quality with fine finishing,” Dordet says. “The excellence of the leather, calfskin or alligator straps that are hand-finished by the leather craftsmen in our workshops is the DNA of the house. The Hermès clientele appreciates wearing leather straps and the wide range of colors available.” Dordet notes that Hermès craftspeople seek out natural skins as close to perfection as possible, cut the skins according to what is being manufactured and hand-finish the leather, whether it’s for a strap or other product.

ALL IN THE DETAILS Hermès is very proud that most of the strap work is done by hand. There are about 50 different steps in strap production, and at any stage, the craftspeople could potentially damage or burn the fine leather. “For a standard strap, we have a special Hermès saddle-stitching all around. Then the craftsmen hand-finish it, which takes an hour or more,” Dordet says. “We also have very special straps, such as the new In the Pocket, which requires about a week of work.” “The most challenging part is when the craftsman needs to stitch the loop on the strap, which is called blind-stitching,” Dordet adds. “He needs to use his fingers so that he knows where to go through with the needle.” Hermès has recently developed new timepieces, such as pocket watches that showcase the brand’s horological skills, alongside its leather-crafting prowess. “We bring the best possible straps to highlight the whole watch,” Dordet emphasizes. “I am very proud of our skill in leather-working,” says Dordet, “especially when I see that we can also capitalize on the Hermès know-how to bring new creations to the watch industry.” - Keith W. Strandberg

Nevertheless, poetic complications require the skills of the most capable of watchmakers.
