THE NUTCRACKER

Under the direction of Marina Medvetskaya, St Petersburg Classical Ballet has won plaudits across Russia, Scandinavia and the United States. Now Watford audiences have the opportunity to experience the superb artistry of this acclaimed company on its first UK tour. Combining classical training and technique with the best-loved Russian ballets, St Petersburg Classical Ballet’s performances have an air of magic, complemented by a full orchestra and outstanding male soloists who will take your breath away!

‘The high level of dancing was also a great pleasure, particularly in its authority and a classical purity that is rare today’

One of the few 19th century Romantic ballets to survive intact, Giselle tells of a village girl whose everlasting love saves her beloved from a wretched dance to the death. The Nutcracker is a delightfully festive tale, and the perfect introduction to ballet, as Clara is whisked away on a fairy-tale adventure by her Nutcracker prince.

THE BARRON KNIGHTS’

PETER LANGFORD

SPOT LIGHT ON

Peter Langford is one of the original members of The Barron Knights, who will be performing at Watford Colosseum on Saturday 10 October. Tickets are available online at watfordcolosseum.co.uk How were The Barron Knights formed? The Barron Knights were formed in 1960 in Leighton Buzzard. We loved harmony and humour so when we heard the American group The Coasters sing their hits we wanted to be like them as their hits were harmony and humour. I wrote our first hit Call Up The Groups on my Mum’s kitchen table by changing the words of famous songs and making a story of putting them into the forces. Brian Epstein was the man who selected The Barron Knights to tour with The Beatles. What memories do you have of him and life on the road with The Beatles? Brian Epstein had heard about us and the strong following we were getting without a hit record and in 1963 he asked us to tour with The Beatles. They had Love Me Do and Please Please Me and She Loves You already in the charts. To witness Beatlemania was something I will never forget. The four Beatles were a great bunch and we had lots of laughs together. We had to back Cilla Black on that tour and she used to sew up my trousers every night cos I would split them in a dance I had to do. And after The Beatles, you were touring with The Rolling Stones. How did that come about? Two tours with the Stones was also a great part of our history. Bill Wyman’s sister took him to watch us at Aylesbury town hall in 1961 and we

inspired him to go home and buy a guitar. I met up with Bill last year and he said ‘Pete, you changed my life’. You’re now on tour again - did you think in the 60s you would still be touring 50 years on? 60s music will live on forever. We never knew the strength of a good sing along song in the 60s. I don’t think radio will play today’s music in 20 years time, but will still play 60s songs. Never in our wildest dreams would we believe we are still playing. 32 tours of Australia and New Zealand, many tours in the Far East/Middle East/South Africa/US and all because of music. Which bands or artists would you parody today and why? It’s tough now to parody today’s songs as most sound the same and our followers would not recognise the songs any way. If we have a good idea for a parody we would use an old song that all would know. What can audiences look forward to seeing from The Barron Knights’ brand-new show? Our concert is called ‘Soundtrack of our Lives’ and of course we sing our hits but we have a song about Charles and Camilla and a song about what happens to your body when you get older! We also play a bit of Classical and Flamenco, plus some harmony arrangements of songs from the 60s e.g. Four Seasons’ songs and good ol’ American Rock ‘n’ Roll.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL Watford Colosseum is raising money to help fund brand-new operating theatres at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. For the past three years HQ Theatres & Hospitality, alongside sister company Qdos Entertainment, has been supporting the Theatres for Theatres appeal, in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

©2007 Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (©2008 Theatres for Theatres) Registered charity no. 23582

So far the generosity of audiences and staff has raised over £710,000 for the charity, but we have more to raise to help build and equip a suite of new operating theatres at the Hospital which will open in 2017. You can donate using collection tins at Watford Colosseum or online at gosh.org/theatredonation Your support makes a huge difference. Thank you.
