Flashback to spring of 1996. I was the Editor of Top Of The Pops Magazine and Susie Boone the Deputy Editor. Virgin Records invited us both to lunch at a swanky rooftop restaurant in London’s trendy Ladbroke Grove. They wanted to introduce us to their new signing, The Spice Girls. The band were gearing up to the release of their first single, Wannabe and to say we were skeptical was an understatement. Other than Eternal, there hadn’t been a successful girl band since the 80s – a whole string of female line-ups had attempted to break the charts and failed.
PETER LORAINE
SPOT LIGHT ON
As the girls made their way up the restaurant staircase to the roof, it sounded as if a whole football team were coming to meet us. “I’m Vicky,” “I’m Melanie C,” “Melanie B,” “Geri,” “Emma – nice to meet you!” Their confidence was shocking and during this, our first of what would be many times spent together, they talked of their plans for world domination. As Mel B sat on my knee ordering food (!) I agreed we would write a piece about them in the next issue of the magazine and said it would be a fun idea to give them their own TOTP nicknames. They started shouting out ideas - none of which we eventually used. In July we completed our first of what would be many photo shoots with the Spicies. They were back in London following a trip to Japan and Wannabe was already number one in the charts. Mel B showed off her newly pierced tongue and as they terrorised other guests on the show, the idea of nicknames seemed more appropriate than ever. The next day at TOTP HQ, myself, Susie and the magazine team sat around a table and spent five minutes deciding on the names Sporty, Scary, Baby, Posh and Ginger. I’d like to be able to say we spent hours fine-tuning the idea, but like many fine ideas, it came together with the click of a finger. For a moment Geri was nearly Saucy Spice and Mel C Scouse Spice, but other than that it didn’t require much debate and the magazine was sent to the printers announcing the girls TOTP names by cutting their heads out and sticking them on little bottles of spice in a kitchen spice rack! Fast Forward a month and the fabulous late Linda Duff called me. Linda was the gossip columnist for the Daily Star. “I hope you
SAY YOU’LL BE THERE… AT SPICEWORLD: THE EXHIBITON THIS JULY
don’t mind, but we’re going to use your Spice Girls nicknames in our paper,” she said. ‘It’s just so funny, we love it here.” A further month later and the Sunday Times newspaper did exactly the same. It caught on like we could never have imagined. Mel C recently told me no one in America knew them by their real names. In her words “it was a real game changer for us!” One of the most incredible things about the Spice Girls during their career was their sense of loyalty to TOTP magazine. They never refused to be photographed, always gave us interview time and invited us to videos shoots and foreign countries with them. By the time I left TOTP magazine in 1998, we were the biggest selling music magazine in the UK. Our edition with free Spice Girls blow up dolls had sold a record breaking 550,000 copies! It was a wonderful time, a wonderful era. Sometimes now when I meet someone for the first time, someone will introduce me as the person who gave the Spice Girls their nicknames. It makes me smile and I always think it must be like saying to the Human League, “I love your song Don’t You Want Me.” They’ll no doubt reply they’ve had dozens of hits since then. Similarly, I have worked with lots of pop groups and generated dozens of ideas. But if the Spice Girls nick-names is the thing that I stand a small chance of being remembered for in the world of pop music, then I’ll be very happy. PETER LORAINE
