EARLY CHILDHOOD

As We Grow Preschool

Our preschool program is intended to help stimulate your child’s social, emotional, and creative development. Our program emphasizes socialization and learning through play. Classroom activities encourage problem solving, creativity, self-expression, and academics. This enables children to explore in a room filled with warmth, affection, and respect for others. It is the preschool environment where children learn to respect the authority of adults other than their parents. Friendship, sharing, and cooperation are modeled and practiced on a daily basis. The children participate in all types of learning including art, music, creative play, cooking, literature, and science. Through carpet time, direct instruction, hands-on learning and free-time activities, the children are exposed to a curriculum that enhances their creativity and also provides a positive atmosphere for learning.

Eligibility

Children must be the proper age as of September 1st (November 1st for 5-year) and must be toilet trained if enrolled in the 3, 4, or 5 year-old program. All participant information forms will be mailed out in early August and must be turned in to the Community Center front desk by Friday, September 5th. Medical forms will be due no later than October 15th.

School Calendar and Payment Schedule

Our preschool runs from Mid-September to Mid-May. A detailed calendar will be given out during the first week of school. All payments are monthly and are based on a yearly fee broken into nine equal payments. All payments are due by the 1st of each month. Menagerie Dance Descriptions

OUR STAFF MENAGERIE DANCE

Creative Dance (3 years) Assists the very young dancer in identifying basic forms of movement through imaginative games, songs, music and rhythmical patterns as well as encourages taking turns and direction from the teacher. Pre Ballet I (4 years) and II (5 – 6 years):

Students begin the transition from fairy-tale excitement to the self-awareness and pride of dancing ballet. Still emphasizing the use of imagery and imagination, we begin development of ballet concepts such as turn out, coordination, spatial awareness and class etiquette. As they progress, students learn ballet terminology, how to identify correct and incorrect movements and begin learning how to self-correct themselves while dancing.

NEW Pre Ballet and Tap I (4 years) Pre Ballet and Tap II (5 – 6 years)

This class offers students an opportunity to learn all of the concepts presented in the Pre-Ballet class along with the fun, energetic rhythm of tap dancing.

Pre Jazz (5 – 6 years) This class is for first time jazz students who are excited to “move to the music” and show off their natural flair for dance. The main goals include learning class format, listening to their teacher and cooperating with other students. The main focus at this first level is listening to the music, finding the rhythm, building basic jazz technique and vocabulary, and using power and energy in their movements. Pre Modern (5 – 6 years) Modern dance explores movement, space, rhythm and the dancer’s own creativity with emphasis on momentum, shapes and patterns. It is inspired by nature, music, art and human emotions. This class will contain a very basic technique study & improvisation. Pre Hip Hop (5 – 6 years)

This class serves as an introduction to hip hop dance for the younger student. Still incorporating movement games and music, the class focuses on rhythm, musicality and basic footwork. It is a great way to get kids moving!

Student Division (First Grade and above – contact Meghan Reimers for placement inquiries)

The second division is a Graded-training program. Age is used as a guideline for class placement; however a student’s individual ability becomes more important. Students will be evaluated at the end of each year to determine appropriate class placement for the following year. It is typical for a student to remain at the same level for 2 years. Promotion to the next level does not occur until the student has mastered the current levels syllabus. This is important for the students’ safety, as well as their confidence.

Ballet I, II, III, IV, Advanced:

Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles. As students grow, they naturally begin to dance as a form of expression and imagination. We capture this enthusiasm and incorporate it into our ballet program for young students. As our students mature and their bodies develop strength, we transition to a more serious study of ballet technique that will prepare them to be both confident and technically proficient dancers and artists.

Jazz I, II, III, IV, Advanced:

Students who show a natural flair for drama and performance love Jazz class. Jazz curriculum is a perfect complement to our ballet program. We follow the typical jazz class format of building strength, balance and extension through isolations, rhythmic exercises, floor stretches, across the floor patterns and dance routines. Movements continue to develop as the students’ progress and mature. Tap dancing allows students to learn the art of making music with their feet through the rhythmic movement of the choreography. This is a unique style since dance steps can be audibly matched to the beat of music.

Hip Hop I, II, III, IV:

A fusion of high-energy dance styles equates to the dance style that is hip-hop, which is featured in many music videos. Groove to the beats of the latest songs as you warm-up and learn an exciting, lively dance routine. Movements will continue to increase in difficulty from level to level.

Modern I, II, III, IV, Advanced:

Turning against the structured techniques and shoes of ballet, modern dance favors a freer style of dancing. Dancers will explore the concepts of contract/release, drop/flow, and gravity. This class consists of floor work, center work, a barre, and combinations that use the founding principles of modern dance and evolve them to the present.

MENAGERIE DANCE

Tap I

Lyrical I, II, III, IV:

Lyrical dance is a dance style that blends ballet and jazz dance. A lyrical dancer uses movement to express strong emotions such as love, joy and anger. Music may consist of many genres including pop, rock, and Hip Hop.

Class Attire In order for our instructors to effectively correct the students’ body alignment, the proper dance attire should be worn. It is hard to see if the knees are bent or if the stomach muscles are being used when the dancers have on baggy clothes. Please refer to the dress code that we have established for our classes.

Show respect to all participants and staff. 2. Refrain from using foul or obscene language. 3. Refrain from causing bodily harm to participants and staff. 4. Refrain from communicating threats, inappropriate comments, or actions that can be considered as any type of harassment, direct threat or actions that poses a threat by gesture, words, or actions. 5. Exhibit tolerance and courtesies and commonly accepted behavior towards our diverse community. 6. Show respect to equipment, supplies, and facilities. 7. Exhibit good sportsmanship at athletic events whether an active participant or observer. 8. The use, suspected use, or consumption of alcohol or illegal substances on Park District property is prohibited. While alcohol is approved for select special and off property events, it is expected that all residents and participants will exhibit good judgment and moderation when alcohol is consumed.

The Wauconda Park District reserves the right to dismiss without refund any participant who violates the behavior policy. In addition, if it is felt that such actions pose a threat to the general safety or welfare of other participants, an individual or group may risk consequences associated with the summoning of the Wauconda Police.

Dog Policy

Dogs are welcome in our parks, however for safety reasons some areas are not acceptable for dogs. Dogs are not allowed during any special event in which there is a high concentration of people in a confined area. Dogs are also not allowed on any play field area. These areas include bleachers, or spectators areas, soccer, baseball, softball fields, dugout areas, court areas, or playgrounds. Please kindly understand and respect this policy.

Photo/Privacy Policy

The Wauconda Park District uses photographs of participants in programs and special events to inform others about the recreational opportunities available in our community. We do not use identification in our brochure without prior consent. If you do not wish to have your picture taken, please inform the photographer. All personal information given to us through registration will be kept confidential. At no time will the WPD give, sell, or release personal information without your prior consent.

Notice to Parents- Drop Off and Pick Up

Attention parents—it is your responsibility to walk your minor child to and from class. Dropping kids off in front of our building is considered a safety issue. If a child is left unattended after a class or activity for a long period of time, we will call the police.

Class Schedules

All classes listed in the brochure have dates that detail when the class will meet. If a class is missed during the scheduled session for instructor illness or other conflict, a “make-up” class will be added to the end of the session or a class will be extended. A note or a call from the park district, or a class announcement will communicate that change to you. We are only closed for major holidays. Again, please refer to the class schedule or call as we do NOT follow the school’s schedule for all classes.
