Wauconda Park District Fall 2015 Program Guide

Page 1

Director’s Page Dear Residents, I hope that you and your family are enjoying the summer. It is hard to believe that it is almost over already. Summer is the busiest time of year for our staff with all of our camps, programs and special events going on. We operate at a very fast pace in the summer and at times we don’t take that extra minute to “thank” everyone for their efforts. Every summer we employ over 50 seasonal staff in different positions from camp counselors, lifeguards, concessions and parks maintenance. The majority of these staff members are college and high school age, many return to us each summer for three or four years. Sometimes it can be an individual’s first job. These staff members are vital to the overall success of our summer operations, we couldn’t do it without their hard work and efforts. A special “thanks” to our Wauconda Fest Committee who work countless hours during the Fest and all year long. They work with one goal in mind, and that is to bring the best possible Fest to our community. This year the rain came but it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. We finished strong and are already looking forward to 2016. I would also like to recognize all of our sponsors and volunteers, without your continued support there would be no Wauconda Fest. It is truly a community event. Projects - This summer our Board of Commissioners approved the following projects which we believe will enhance District-wide operations. • Sedgebrook Park tennis courts will be repaired and recoated which will alleviate the puddling on the courts. • Walking path at Cook Park will be repaired and renovated including paving of the entry way into the Garland Road lot. This will make it easier for patrons to push strollers or ride their bikes since there will no longer be gravel in the entrance. • Marquee sign will be installed at Cook Park to replace the existing sign. This project has been on the District’s wish list for many years. We feel this will enhance our efforts in communicating with our residents about upcoming events and programs. • ActiveNet – Staff is excited about implementation of a new registration software package beginning with the Winter/Spring 2016 registration cycle in December. Many added benefits including customizable searches, easy account access, better on-line search functions, and automatic recurring payments will make your registration experience even easier. Look for updates throughout the fall season. We hope that you will enjoy these improvements. It is the goal of our Board and staff to be able to provide exceptional services to our residents now and into the future. As always, I encourage you to look through our program guide. I am sure that you will find something that interests you. If at any time you have any questions or concerns regarding the District, please feel free to contact me. In Play,

Nancy Burton

Director of Parks & Recreation

Early As WeChildhood Grow Preschool Preschool

Our preschool program is intended to help stimulate your child’s social, emotional, and creative development. Our program emphasizes socialization and learning through play. Classroom activities encourage problem solving, creativity, self-expression, and academics. This enables children to explore in a room filled with warmth, affection, and respect for others. It is the preschool environment where children learn to respect the authority of adults other than their parents. Friendship, sharing, and cooperation are modeled and practiced on a daily basis. The children participate in all types of learning including art, music, creative play, cooking, literature and science. Through carpet time, direct instruction, hands-on learning and freetime activities, the children are exposed to a curriculum that enhances their creativity and also provides a positive atmosphere for learning.

Eligibility

Children must be the proper age as of September 1st (December 1st for 5-year) and must be toilet trained if enrolled in the 3, 4, or 5 year-old program. All participant information forms will be available online or at the front desk in early August and must be turned in to the Community Center front desk by Friday, September 4th. Medical forms will be due no later than October 15th.

School Calendar and Payment Schedule

Our preschool runs from Mid-September to Mid-May. A detailed calendar will be given out during the first week of school. All payments are monthly and are based on a yearly fee broken into nine equal payments. All payments are due by the 1st of each month. If payments are received late, you will be assessed a late fee of $15. Enrollment in the automatic payment program can be completed with the form found in our information packet. Please see parent manual for online payment options. Please note: Registration for these classes began in February 2015. Some classes may be full at this time. Early Childhood Prepping for Preschool NEW

2 ½- 3 years Every year we get lots of questions from parents asking us if their child is ready for preschool. Or, for families that their children are already enrolled in preschool but feel that they are needing a little extra help. We asked our preschool teachers to help us develop a list of skills that they think make a well-rounded preschooler and we are putting that list to use in this great new class. Many times parents think about the academic skills, but this list is more about the basics needed to be successful. With these skills in place, the academics will follow. We will focus a lot on fine motor skills involving pencil grip and writing, painting, scissors, and gluing. As well we will also be working on buttons, zippers and puzzles. Some of our time each week will also be spent on following directions through carpet/story time, songs, dances and simple academic worksheets. Each class will have a short play time as well, to work on socialization and friendship. No class 11/26. Menagerie Dance Pre-Dance Division

Creative Dance (3 yrs): Assists the very young dancer in identifying basic forms of movement through imaginative games, songs, music and rhythmical patterns as well as encouraging taking turns and direction from the teacher. Pre Ballet I (4 years) and II (5 – 6 years): Students begin the transition from fairy-tale excitement to the self-awareness and pride of dancing ballet. Still emphasizing the use of imagery and imagination, we begin development of ballet concepts such as turn out, coordination, spatial awareness and class etiquette. As they progress, students learn ballet terminology, how to identify correct and incorrect movements and begin learning how to self-correct themselves while dancing. Pre Ballet and Tap I (4 years) and Pre Ballet and Tap II (5 – 6 years)*NEW This class offers students an opportunity to learn all of the concepts presented in the Pre-Ballet class along with the fun, energetic rhythm of tap dancing. Pre Jazz (5 – 6 years): This class is for first time jazz students who are excited to “move to the music” and show off their natural flair for dance. The main goals include learning class format, listening to their teacher and cooperating with other students. The main focus at this first level is listening to the music, finding the rhythm, building basic jazz technique and vocabulary, and using power and energy in their movements. Pre Modern (5 – 6 years): Modern dance explores movement, space, rhythm and the dancer’s own creativity with emphasis on momentum, shapes and patterns. It is inspired by nature, music, art and human emotions. This class will contain a very basic technique study & improvisation

Student Division

(First Grade and above – contact Meghan Reimers for placement inquiries) The second division is a Graded-training program. Age is used as a guideline for class placement; however a student’s individual ability becomes more important. Students will be evaluated at the end of each year to determine appropriate class placement for the following year. It is typical for a student to remain at the same level for 2 years. Promotion to the next level does not occur until the student has mastered the current levels syllabus. This is important for the students’ safety, as well as their confidence. Ballet Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles. As students grow, they naturally begin to dance as a form of expression and imagination. We capture this enthusiasm and incorporate it into our ballet program for young students. As our students mature and their bodies develop strength, we transition to a more serious study of ballet technique that will prepare them to be both confident and technically proficient dancers and artists. Jazz Students who show a natural flair for drama and performance love Jazz class. Jazz curriculum is a perfect complement to our ballet program. We follow the typical jazz class format of building strength, balance and extension through isolations, rhythmic exercises, floor stretches, across the floor patterns and dance routines. Movements continue to develop as the students’ progress and mature. Tap Tap dancing allows students to learn the art of making music with their feet through the rhythmic movement of the choreography. This is a unique style since dance steps can be audibly matched to the beat of music.

Menagerie Dance Hip Hop A fusion of high-energy dance styles equates to the dance style that is hip-hop, which is featured in many music videos. Groove to the beats of the latest songs as you warm-up and learn an exciting, lively dance routine. Movements will continue to increase in difficulty from level to level. Modern Turning against the structured techniques and shoes of ballet, modern dance favors a freer style of dancing. Dancers will explore the concepts of contract/release, drop/flow, and gravity. This class consists of floor work, center work, a barre, and combinations that use the founding principles of modern dance and evolve them to the present. Lyrical Lyrical dance is a dance style that blends ballet and jazz dance. A lyrical dancer uses movement to express strong emotions such as love, joy and anger. Music may consist of many genres including pop, rock, and Hip Hop. Class

The Wauconda Park District uses photographs of participants in programs and special events to inform others about the recreational opportunities available in our community. We do not use identification in our brochure without prior consent. If you do not wish to have your picture taken, please inform the photographer. All personal information given to us through registration will be kept confidential. At no time will the WPD give, sell, or release personal information without your prior consent.

Class Schedules

All classes listed in the brochure have dates that detail when the class will meet. If a class is missed during the scheduled session for instructor illness or other conflict, a “make-up” class will be added to the end of the session or a class will be extended. An email or a call from the park district, or a class announcement will communicate that change to you. We are only closed for major holidays. Again, please refer to the class schedule or call as we do NOT follow the school’s schedule for all classes.
