Director’s Page Dear Residents,

Thank you - I hope you and your family are doing well and looking forward to the upcoming summer. On behalf of our Board, I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote in the November election regarding expanding the Community Center. Our Board of Commissioners appreciates our residents voicing their opinions. In addition, our staff will continue to strive to meet the District’s goal of providing exceptional recreational services to our community. Recognition - This coming May, Commissioners Stefani Jerard (2004) and Bob Cook (2007) will be stepping down from the Board after several years of service to our District. We appreciate their years of service, dedication and commitment to our District. They have seen many changes occur during their tenure on the Board and should be proud of their efforts and accomplishments. In May, we look forward to welcoming two new members on our Board, Cari Berrelez and Dirk Leahy. Accreditation - Our District recently received Accreditation status in Risk Management from the Park District Risk Management Agency (PDRMA). PDRMA is a risk pool consisting of over 150 Park, Forest, and Special Recreation Districts in Illinois. Accreditation is the highest rating for safety that a District can achieve. This recognition for our District is a testament to the quality and safety of our recreational programs, facilities and events. Our staff is dedicated to providing our residents with safe environments to enjoy their leisure pursuits. In Memory - This past year the Park District lost a friend and valuable member of our team. Long-time employee James “Eric” Payne lost his battle to cancer in November, 2014. You may not have met Eric, but I can tell you that his work touched the lives of many in our community. Many knew of Eric’s keen ability to fix almost anything, a skill that saved the district thousands of dollars over the years. In his 19 years at the park district Eric oversaw the renovations of all of the district’s playgrounds. He was involved in the planning and installation of 7 new playgrounds and parks, including the development of Orchard Hills, Fieldbrook, Fishhook, and Sedgebrook Parks. In addition, Eric worked with LYAA to refinish the Garland Fields (Lions Sports Complex), these are just a few of his accomplishments. Lastly, Eric was the man behind the scenes, a quiet individual, he oversaw the logistics for many community special events including the Triathlons and Wauconda Fest. Eric’s dedication will be missed, but the legacy he has left through the work he took pride in will live on. Our District would not be as successful as we are today without his contributions to the community. Summer - I encourage you to look through our program guide and check out all the classes and events we have scheduled this summer. I am sure that you will find something that interests you. If at any time you have any questions or concerns regarding District operations, please feel free to contact me. Enjoy your summer and I hope to see you at Wauconda Fest. In Play,

Nancy Burton

Swimming Lessons Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Lessons

The American Red Cross offers five comprehensive course levels that teach you, your child, or other family members how to swim skillfully and safely. Each level of learn-to-swim also includes training in basic water safety and helping a swimmer in distress. All lessons are taught at Beach Park located at 112 Park Street. The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of skills and meeting minimum age requirements. Skill assessments will be done the first day of class and any adjustments will be made at that time. The first rain out will be used as the session’s safety day and class will be held for all levels but infants. If another rain out occurs, the class will be made up on Friday. Red Cross certificate is issued at the successful completion of each skill level. The beach is closed during morning swim lessons. All persons, including parents and/or guests are not permitted on the beach during this time. Persons may observe classes from behind the fence line or from inside the beach house as the children who participate in our swim lessons become easily distracted and this will prevent any class disruptions. At the completion of class, parents and students must leave the beach area immediately unless they possess a beach pass or pay the daily rate.

Swimming Lessons

Minnows: Infant and Preschool Aquatic Program

18 months-3 years with parent (30 Minutes) This class is for the child that loves the water but is not ready to go at it alone. This parent/child program will promote aquatic adjustments, swimming readiness skills, while having fun with mom or dad. Emphasis is on becoming better familiar in the water while building a trusting relationship with the parent. We will use songs, games, and activities that will promote the swimmers to work on opening eyes and retrieving objects below the surface, front/back floats and glides with assistance from parent, and leg and arm action on front and back.

Waterbugs

3-5 years (30 Minutes) This class will help toddlers adjust to the water and build confidence through games, songs, and fun. This class is designed for your toddler to continue with swim lessons without the assistance of mom or dad. This is a drop off program so your child must be ready to try swimming with our teachers. Skills that the instructors will work on are listening, following directions and staying with the group while learning how to safely enter the water, bob, retrieve objects from below the surface, floating on front and back with assistance, and leg action on front and back. Children in this level will learn how to put their face in the water and open their eyes in the water.

Seals- Level 1- Introduction to Water Skills

5-10 years (45 Minutes) Continuation of our waterbugs program where we will work on making students feel comfortable in the water. Seals participants will work on submerging mouth, nose, and eyes while picking up submerged objects. They will work on recovering from a front or back glide, swimming on front and back using arm, and leg actions. Floating and gliding skills are taught with support from the instructor. Safety topics include recognizing the lifeguards, how to call for help, and too much sun.

Goldfish- Level 2- Fundamental Aquatic Skills

6-11 years (45 Minutes) This level will give students success with fundamental skills. Participants will fully submerge and hold breath for 5 or more seconds, and work on rolling over from front to back, back to front. Tuck, Jelly, and front/back floats are mastered. Supported floating with kicks and rhythmic breathing are introduced. Swimmer will work on performing front and back glides for 5 body lengths. Safety topics include, staying safe around water, life jacket use, and recognizing an emergency.

Sharks- Level 3 - Stroke Development

6-11 years (45 Minutes) This level will build on the skills learned in level 2. Participants will learn to bob while moving to safety in chest deep water. Swimmers will need to perform the survival float for a minimum of 30 seconds, learn a scissors kick, and elementary back stroke for 15 yards. They will work on learning rotary breathing in horizontal position and being able to change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back. Improving skill competency, deep-water work, including elementary backstroke, and treading water is of primary concern. Safety topics include cold water or ice safety, reaching, and throwing assists.

Whales- Level 4 - Stroke Improvement

7-11 years (45 Minutes) Participants will develop confidence in the skills previously learned and improve other aquatic skills. Some skills participants will be required to complete include front and back crawl and sidestroke with scissor kick. Breaststroke/butterfly and elementary backstroke will be added to this level of swimming. Safety topics include reaching and throwing assists, recreational water illnesses, and thinking before you leap.

Dolphins- Level 5 - Stroke Refinement

8-11 years (45 Minutes) The level 5 swimmer will work on further coordination and refinement of previously taught strokes. Participants will become proficient with treading water using two different kicks, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, front and back crawl, and the sidestroke. Butterfly stroke is reviewed along with a technical review of front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke. Each stroke must be mastered for a minimum of 25 yards. Safety topics taught include the importance of CPR and First Aid skills, and what to do with waves and tides. Rainout/Information Line: (847) 526-4606

Mad Scientists: Session 4; Week 2 Using Nature as our subject, the campers will mix things together to see what happens, hypothesize, experiment and analyze through hands-on-activities. It might be the ball that defied gravity, magnetic slime, glowing dough or a water rocket…relentlessly fun, deceptively educational. Scientist will investigate the strange, learning not only how things happen, but also more importantly why. Space Explorers: Session 5; Week 1 Is there life on other planets, and do they have their own form of nature. We can only speculate and use our imagination unless we create a robot that can explore by collecting samples and making observations. Or maybe we might travel by rocket ship or get pulled up into a time space wormhole transporting everyone to a galaxy far, far away. We will discover how aliens interact with their environment and send us home with moon rocks or space debris. Nature’s Pantry: Session 5; Week 2 During this week, we will go back to the land as we learn to use our natural resources to create the products and foodstuffs that we use in daily living. Nature can be a busy and curious kitchen, full of everything that our environment can provide for us to survive. The campers will focus on the farm-totable experience and learn about the growing and harvesting steps of nature’s pantry.

The Gold Pyramid House

Active Adult A few words say it all: Mysterious, Powerful and Gold! Those words were kept in mind when Jim & Linda Onan built one of the most ambitious works of art ever created as a private residence. Our tour begins with a sit down lecture about the Gold Pyramid House and its remarkable history. We will then have a guided tour of the 17,000 square foot interior of the Gold Pyramid House which has been lavishly designed and decorated by Mrs. Onan to reflect the elegant, ostentatiousness common only to the wealthy Egyptian Pharaohs. After the tour, we will enjoy a delicious buffet style lunch which includes: entrees of bone-in Amish chicken smoked with European seasoning, and apple & cherrywood slowly smoked pulled pork shoulder in homemade BBQ sauce, sides of baked multigrain bread rolls, Idaho potatoes sautéed in garlic & sweet cream butter topped with paprika, and Mediterranean village salad tossed with fresh vegetables, vinegar & organic olive oil, dessert of homemade organic light goats milk cheesecake topped with strawberries, and beverage choices of coke, diet coke sprite, and bottled water. But we don’t stop there! After lunch we will continue on to explore the Museum with an exact replica of Tutankhamun Tomb. Your tour concludes with time to look and shop in the Egyptian Gift Shop. Show respect to all participants and staff. 2. Refrain from using foul or obscene language. 3. Refrain from causing bodily harm to participants and staff. 4. Refrain from communicating threats, inappropriate comments, or actions that can be considered as any type of harassment, direct threat or actions that poses a threat by gesture, words, or actions. 5. Exhibit tolerance and courtesies and commonly accepted behavior towards our diverse community. 6. Show respect to equipment, supplies, and facilities. 7. Exhibit good sportsmanship at athletic events whether an active participant or observer. 8. The use, suspected use, or consumption of alcohol or illegal substances on Park District property is prohibited. While alcohol is approved for select special and off property events, it is expected that all residents and participants will exhibit good judgment and moderation when alcohol is consumed. The Wauconda Park District reserves the right to dismiss without refund any participant who violates the behavior policy. In addition, if it is felt that such actions pose a threat to the general safety or welfare of other participants, an individual or group may risk consequences associated with the summoning of the Wauconda Police.

Dog Policy

Dogs are welcome in our parks, however for safety reasons some areas are not acceptable for dogs. Dogs are not allowed during any special event in which there is a high concentration of people in a confined area. Dogs are also not allowed on any play field area. These areas include bleachers, or spectator areas, soccer, baseball, softball fields, dugout areas, court areas, or playgrounds. Please kindly understand and respect this policy.

Photo/Privacy Policy

The Wauconda Park District uses photographs of participants in programs and special events to inform others about the recreational opportunities available in our community. We do not use identification in our brochure without prior consent. If you do not wish to have your picture taken, please inform the photographer. All personal information given to us through registration will be kept confidential. At no time will the WPD give, sell, or release personal information without your prior consent.

Class Schedules

All classes listed in the brochure have dates that detail when the class will meet. If a class is missed during the scheduled session for instructor illness or other conflict, a “make-up” class will be added to the end of the session or a class will be extended. An email or a call from the park district, or a class announcement will communicate that change to you. We are only closed for major holidays. Again, please refer to the class schedule or call as we do NOT follow the school’s schedule for all classes.
