information Von 3. bis 6. Oktober 2013 findet Wiens Club- und Showcase-Festival Waves Vienna zum dritten Mal statt. Von Flex bis Pratersauna werden 16 Bühnen entlang des Wiener Donaukanals und der Praterstraße im 2. Wiener Gemeindebezirk von neuen Talenten und bereits etablierten Acts bespielt. Trotz bekannter und gefeierter Namen wie Skream, Múm, CSS, Charli XCX, Nathan Fake, Sohn, Slut, Au Revoir Simone, Kreisky, Attwenger oder I-Wolf heißt es bei mehr als 100 Acts stets auch: sich von Club zu Club treiben lassen und in die verschiedenen Musikbiotope – von Indie-Rock über Folk bis Elektronik – hineinschnuppern. Dabei wird Waves Vienna heuer wieder zwei Gastländer willkommen heißen. Getreu dem Motto „East Meets West“ werden im Live-Programm verstärkt Acts aus Slowenien und Belgien auftauchen. Am Samstag, den 5. Oktober 2013, wird Waves erstmals um Waves Bratislava erweitert. Dabei wird es in sieben Locations zusätzliches Programm parallel zu Waves Vienna geben. Shuttlebusse verkehren stündlich von 19 Uhr bis 4 Uhr zwischen Wien und Bratislava und sind für Besitzer des Twin-City-Festivalpasses und des Twin-City-Tagespasses kostenlos. Twin-City-Pässe kosten um € 5,— mehr als die jeweiligen Pässe nur für Waves Vienna. From October 3rd to 6th 2013, Vienna’s club and showcase festival Waves Vienna will take place for the third time. New talents and already established acts will be performing on 16 stages along the Danube Canal and Praterstraße in Vienna’s 2nd district. Despite a number of well known and acclaimed bands such as Skream, Múm, CSS, Charli XCX, Nathan Fake, Sohn, Slut, Au Revoir Simone, Kreisky, Attwenger, or I-Wolf, more than 100 acts also means: you have to let yourself drift from club to club and dip into the various musical biotopes – from indie rock via folk to electronic music. This year, Waves Vienna will again welcome two guest countries. True to the motto “East Meets West”, the live programme will have a special focus on acts from Slovenia and Belgium. On Saturday, October 5th 2013, Waves will be extended to also include Waves Bratislava. Seven additional venues will present a completely independent programme alongside that of Waves Vienna. Shuttle buses will depart at hourly intervals between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. and are free for holders of the Twin City Festival Pass and the Twin City Day Pass. Twin City Passes cost only € 5,— more than the respective passes for Vienna only.

The cruise vessel of the DDSG will be transformed into an additional venue during Waves Vienna. While bands are performing on the weather-proof main deck, you can relax and enjoy a few drinks on the sun deck.

Das Badeschiff liegt im Donaukanal vor Anker. Auf dem Hauptdeck gibt es die Möglichkeit im Restaurant Holy Moly ein paar Snacks einzunehmen, bevor es am Abend im Laderaum des Schiffs mit den Konzerten des Festivals losgeht. Odeon 07 www.odeon-theater.at Taborstraße 10, 1020 Wien Der große Saal der Wiener Getreidebörse wurde in den letzten Kriegstagen 1945 durch einen Brand zerstört, verlor dabei aber nicht seine Bausubstanz. Das Serapions Ensemble adaptierte den Saal unter Wahrung des denkmalgeschützten Bestands als Veranstaltungsstätte und gab ihm den Namen Odeon. The main hall of Vienna’s corn exchange was destroyed by a fire during the last days of the war in 1945, but its structure survived. While preserving the building stock protected as a historical monument, the Serapions Ensemble adapted the hall as an event venue and named it Odeon.

Schmutziger Electro-House mit bösen, aber poppigen Vocals, dargeboten in mitreißenden Live-Auftritten – die drei Österreicher vom A. G. Trio stürmen mit ihrer ganz speziellen Mischung die Charts, Festivals und Dancefloors dieser Welt; ihre Tracks finden sich in den DJ-Sets internationaler Stars wie Groove Armada oder The Crystal Method. Nach einem ersten gemeinsamen Auftritt der drei ursprünglich solo tätigen Produzenten in Novi Sad, Serbien, entwickelte sich im Laufe der Zeit aus dem improvisierten Live-Act ein wirklich aufregender Studio-Act. Dirty electro house with slightly mean pop vocals, presented in thrilling live performances – the three Austrians of A. G. Trio conquer charts, festivals, and dancefloors with their very special mix. International stars such as Groove Armada or The Crystal Method play their tracks in their DJ sets. After the first joint gig of the three originally independently working producers in Novi Sad, Serbia, the improvised live act gradually evolved into a really exciting studio act.

Jetzt setzt die Band – die mit musikalischen Größen wie Portishead, Massive Attack und Sparklehorse verglichen wird – ihren Eroberungsfeldzug im Rest Europas fort. Vulnerable and melancholic, the sound of Amatorski sneaks through our ears into our heads. Weightlessly, the gentle vocals float above piano, drums, and guitar, tell of love and broken hearts. The four Belgians quickly conquered the charts of their native country with their debut “Same Stars We Shared” and the followup “TBC”. Now, the band – which has been compared to music legends such as Portishead, Massive Attack, and Sparklehorse – continues its conquering expedition throughout the rest of Europe.

Kari Amirians Musik ist unbeschwert und leicht, wirkt beinahe unschuldig. Lässt man sich darauf ein, offenbart sie aber so manche Untiefe. Die junge Singer-Songwriterin hat ihre Wurzeln im Bereich der klassischen Musik. Streichinstrumente kommen in ihren Songs nicht zu knapp zum Einsatz, und auch das Klavier weiß sie zu benutzen. Doch kurz bevor ihre Stücke symphonischen Charakter annehmen, kratzt Amirian elegant die Kurve und verleiht ihnen so eine gewisse Bescheidenheit und Demut. Kari Amirian’s music is easy-going and delicate, seems almost innocent. But if you let yourself get into it, it reveales quite some depths. The young singer-songwriter has her roots in classical music. There’s no shortage of string instruments in her songs and the piano, too, plays a prominant role. But right before the pieces take on a symphonic tinge, Amirian elegantly turns the corner and hence gives a certain modesty and humbleness to them.

Artur 8 (DJ-Set) (PL) Artur 8 – aus Warschau stammend, musikalisch erzogen in Berlin – hat sein Talent als Disco- und House-DJ längst unter Beweis gestellt. Trotzdem wird er immer noch als Insidertipp gehandelt. Dabei hat er es mittlerweile zum weltweit gern gebuchten Club-Act gebracht. Gemeinsam mit Max Skiba betreibt er überdies das ebenso erfolgreiche Projekt King Of Kong. Artur 8s Sound weist vielfältige Inspirationsquellen auf. So finden sich in seinen Tracks Einflüsse von Chicago House, Detroit Techno und Old-School Disco, um nur einige wenige zu nennen. Artur 8 – hailing from Warsaw, musically educated in Berlin – has already demonstrated his talent as a disco and house DJ. Still, he’s considered an inside tip, despite the fact that he gets booked as a club act all over the world. In addition, he runs the likewise successful project King Of Kong together with Max Skiba. The sound of Artur 8 is obviously inspired by a wide range of styles. His tracks show influences from Chicago house, Detroit techno, and old-school disco, to name but a few.

Ash My Love (at) Andreas Dauböck und Ursula Winterauer kommen eigentlich aus zwei völlig unterschiedlichen musikalischen Ecken. Mit Ash My Love bekennen sie sich zur Simplifizierung als Konzept, gehen zurück zu den Anfängen des Rock ’n’ Roll und finden sich in den Wurzeln des Delta Blues wieder. Romantik und perfekte Sounds sollte man sich von ihrer Musik nicht erwarten. Vielmehr liefert das Duo erfrischend unkonventionelle, unerhört tragische und zugleich komische Klagelieder über die Vergänglichkeit des Lebens und der Liebe. Andreas Dauböck and Ursula Winterauer actually come from two totally different musical areas. With Ash My Love, they commit to simplicity as a concept, go back to the origins of rock ’n’ roll, and find themselves at the roots of delta blues. Don’t expect romanticism and perfect sounds. Instead, the duo gives us refreshingly unconventional, incredibly tragic and, at the same time, humorous elegies about the transience of life and love.

Attwenger (at) Bereits seit den 90ern begeistern Attwenger mit ihrer Mischung aus Volksmusik, Punk, Hip-Hop und Elektronik sowie mit assoziativen Texten zwischen Blödsinn und Tiefsinn. Das Duo, bestehend aus Markus Binder am Schlagzeug und Hans-Peter Falkner am Akkordeon, hat mit seiner Musik Ohren und Herzen weit über seine Heimat hinaus erobert, und das trotz der meist in oberösterreichischem Dialekt gehaltenen Texte. Um es mit den Worten der BBC-Legende John Peel zu sagen: „I have no idea what it’s all about, but I like the general noise a great deal.“ Attwenger have been entertaining the audience with their mix of Austrian folk music, punk, hip hop, and electronic music as well as with associative lyrics somewhere between nonsense and profoundness since the 90s. The music of the duo, consisting of Markus Binder on the drums and Hans-Peter Falkner on the accordion, has captivated ears and hearts of people far beyond the borders of their home country – despite the fact that their lyrics are usually in Upper Austrian dialect. Au Revoir Simone (us) Man nehme ein paar feine Drum-Samples, eine Prise Retro-Synthies vermengt mit diversen anderen Keyboard-Sounds, den klaren, süßen Gesang dreier junger New Yorkerinnen und mische alles gut durch. Das Resultat: Au Revoir Simone. Das Indie-Pop-Trio aus Brooklyn begeistert mit Songs, die von einer bestrickenden Verträumtheit durchzogen sind. Mit „Move In Spectrums“ legen Erika Forster, Annie Hart und Heather D’Angelo rechtzeitig zu ihrem Auftritt in Wien ein neues Album vor. Take a couple of fine drum samples, a pinch of retro synths blended with various other keyboard sounds, the clear, sweet vocals of three young New Yorker girls, and thouroughly mix it all together. The result: Au Revoir Simone. The indie pop trio from Brooklyn convinces with songs permeated with enchanting dreaminess. With “Move In Spectrums”, Erika Forster, Annie Hart, and Heather D’Angelo release their new album just in time for their gig in Vienna.

The Beth Edges (at) Mit „Blank Coins, Round Dice“ haben die Beth Edges vor einem Jahr ein selbstsicheres, harmonisches Indie-Rock-Album vorgelegt. Nach der Talentprobe „What’s In It For Me?“ dokumentiert dieser Zweitling eine Öffnung in Sachen Sound und Einflüsse. Es mag am erweiterten Erfahrungsschatz liegen, dass frühe Vorbilder aus der Abteilung „schnittige Gitarren, enge Hosen“ zwar noch präsent sind, die Musik der Beth Edges aber an Tiefe gewonnen hat. Äußerst versierte Musiker sind diese Herren trotz ihres jungen Alters obendrein. With “Blank Coins, Round Dice”, The Beth Edges put out a confident, harmonious indie rock album a year ago. After the debut “What’s In It For Me?”, the band showed an increasing open-mindedness on their second album with regards to sounds and influences. It might be due to their increasing experience that the early role models of the cate gory “sharp guitars, tight jeans” are still somehow present, but that the Beth Edges have gained greater depth. And on top of it, the young men are quite practised musicians, despite their young age.

Birth Of Joy (NL) Vor acht Jahren in Utrecht gegründet, hat sich die niederländische Band der Wiederbelebung der großen Rock-Ära der 60er und 70er verschrieben. Mit der eher unüblichen dreiköpfigen Live-Besetzung – ohne Bass, dafür mit Orgel – deutet sich schon eine gewisse Nähe zu den Doors an. Geprägt von harten Drums, verzerrten Gitarren und rauer Stimme fliegen hier die Fetzen. Doch es ist die Mischung aus Psychedelic Rock, BluesRock, Rock ’n’ Roll und Boogie-Woogie, die diesen Act auszeichnet, der weitaus mehr wachruft, als reine Nostalgie. Formed in Utrecht eight years ago, the Dutch band committed itself to the revival of the great rock era of the 60s and 70s. The rather unusual three-piece live setup – without bass but with an electronic organ instead – already hints at a certain affinity for The Doors. Hard drums, distorted guitars, and rough vocals make sparks fly. But it’s the mix of psychedelic rock, blues rock, rock ’n’ roll, and boogie woogie that distinguishes this act, that awakens much more than just nostalgia.

Obwohl dieses Duo noch relativ neu in der polnischen Clubszene ist, können die beiden in Warschau beheimateten DJs und Produzenten schon auf einige Erfolge zurückblicken: eine Residency in einem der renommiertesten Clubs Polens, eine Reihe von Releases bei angesehenen Labels und ein gemeinsames Projekt mit einer der zur Zeit erfolgreichsten polnischen Pop-Sängerinnen, Justyna Steczkowska. Alles, was die beiden ausprobieren – als Eckpunkte dienen House, Techno und Bass –, scheint zu funktionieren. Von schwarzen Schafen im negativen Sinne kann da eigentlich nicht die Rede sein. though the duo is quite new in poland’s club scene, the two dJs and producers from Warsaw can already look back on a number of achievements: a residency in one of the most renowned clubs in poland, various releases on notable labels, and a joint project with one of the currently most successful polish pop singers, Justyna steczkowska. Whatever they have a go at – house, techno, and bass serve as reference points –, it always seems to work. defi nitely no black sheep in the negative sense.

Marla Blumenblatt (de) Gerade noch tanzte sie über die Bühnen des Crazy Horse in Paris und Las Vegas. Jetzt ist sie die Retro-Pop-Queen der Stunde: Marla Blumenblatt. In ihrer ersten Single singt sie von fruchtiger Eiscreme, sonnigen Tagen und wilden Partys. Rock ’n’ Roll der 50er-Jahre inklusive passendes Styling, heißt die Devise. Blumenblatt scheint mitsamt ihrer Band einem alten Kinofilm entsprungen zu sein, und auch ihr Debütalbum „Immer die Boys“ ist ausschließlich mit authentischem Vintage-Material aufgenommen worden. Trotzdem wirkt das Ganze alles andere als gestrig. Until recently she danced on the stages of the Crazy Horse in Paris and Las Vegas. Now she’s the retro pop queen of the hour: Marla Blumenblatt. Her first single is about fruity ice cream, sunny days, and wild parties. Rock ’n’ roll of the 50s including the appropriate style, that’s the name of the game. Blumenblatt and her band look as if they stepped out of an old motion picture and her debut album “Immer die Boys” was recorded exclusively with authentic vintage material. Still, it sounds anything but outdated.

Bo Candy & His Broken Hearts (at) Rock ’n’ Roll, Rhythm & Blues – darauf setzt das burgenländische Quintett rund um den ehemaligen The-Beautiful-Kantine-Band-Leader Thomas Pronai, der auch als Produzent von Garish und Ja, Panik in der hiesigen Musikszene schon lange kein unbeschriebenes Blatt mehr ist. Andreas Spechtl, Sänger von Ja, Panik, hat auch gleich den Gesang für einen Song übernommen, und mit Garish-Gitarrist Julian Schneeberger, Patrick Stürböth von den Incredible Staggers, Ivo Thomann von Across The Delta und Judith Filimónova von Minze und Fijuka ist das hier sowieso schon fast eine österreichische Supergroup. Rock ’n’ roll, rhythm & blues – that’s what the quintet fronted by the former bandleader of The Beautiful Kantine Band Thomas Pronai, who’s also known as the producer of Garish and Ja, Panik in the local music scene, goes for. Andreas Spechtl, singer of Ja, Panik, took over the vocals for one song; and with Garish’s guitarist Julian Schneeberger, Patrick Stürböth of The Incredible Staggers, Ivo Thomann of Across The Delta, and Judith Filimónova of Minze and Fijuka, this is almost an Austrian supergroup anyway.

BRNS (BE) BRNS entstammen jenen vernebelten Ecken und Gassen, die Brüssels mittelalterliche Prunkgebäude mit den hektischen Adern der Postmoderne verbinden. Diese fragile, aber mutige Gleichzeitigkeit von Streben nach neuen Horizonten und nostalgischer Romantik kennzeichnet auch den hypnotischen, experimentierfreudigen Sound der jungen Indie-Band. Die Musiker verbindet eine Vorliebe für komplexe und mystische Verspieltheit – dennoch überrascht das Quartett mit eingängigen, organischen Melodien. BRNS come from those foggy nooks and alleys that connect Brussels’ magnificent medieval buildings to the hectic veins of postmodernism. This fragile but brave simultaneity of the pursuit of new horizons and the nostalgic romanticism also characterises the hypnotic, experimental sound of the young indie band. The musicians share a love for complex and mystic playfulness – nevertheless, the foursome surprises us with catchy, organic melodies.

Didi Bruckmayr & The M-Fx (AT) Maximilian Meindl alias M-fx erzählt eine Geschichte aus Sound, reist durch musikalische Welten und erzeugt große Gefühle. Er ist passionierter DJ, Produzent, Kurator von Kunst- und Musikprojekten sowie Gründervater des renommierten Labels Houztekk Records. Auch musikalisch lässt M-fx sich nicht in eine vorgefertigte Schublade stecken, er ist vielmehr schwer zu fassen. Genau das macht die Sache aber interessant. Vor allem wenn es dann auch noch zu einer Zusammenarbeit mit Label-Kollegen Didi Bruckmayr von den Performance-Wüterichen Fuckhead kommt. Damit ist endgültig alle Berechenbarkeit passé. Maximilian Meindl aka M-fx tells a story made of sound, travels through music worlds, and evokes grand emotions. He’s an avid DJ, producer, curator of art and music projects, as well as the founder of the renowned label Houztekk Records. Calais (at) Die Stadt Calais im Norden Frankreichs hat die Wahl des Namens dieser österreichischen Indie-Folk/Pop-Band inspiriert. Und auch darüber hinaus stellt die idyllische Hafenstadt eine von vielen Inspirationsquellen dar – hat sie doch mit den Anstoß dazu gegeben, die Musik aus dem Kopf überhaupt erst auf Stahlsaiten und Stimmbänder zu übertragen. Auch sonst scheinen die jungen Österreicher sehr von Schiffen und vom Wasser angetan zu sein, so wurde etwa auch ihr Live-Set „Calais auf See“ während einer Donauschifffahrt aufgenommen. The city Calais in Northern France inspired the name-finding of this Austrian indie folk/pop band. But also beyond that, the idyllic harbour town is one of many sources of inspiration – after all, it’s partly responsible for the impulse to get the music out of the head and into the steel strings and vocal cords. And the young Austrians seem to have a thing for ships and water: their live set “Calais auf See” was recorded during a Danube cruise.

Mit „True Romance“, dem ersten Studioalbum in der Tasche, präsentiert sie ihre düster-sphärischen Pop-Songs mit sattem Electro-Sound und elektronischen Beats zur Stimulierung der Hüftbewegung. Schon als Produzent und Drummer von JSBL sowie durch den stetigen Austausch mit seinen Label- und Bandkollegen The Clonious und Dorian Concept hat er sich immer mehr in Richtung experimentelle Elektronik bewegt. Als Cid Rim überzeugt er aktuell mit einer Mixtur aus mystischem Funk, Jazz, Hip-Hop und UK Bass kombiniert mit verspielten Melodien, weichen Piano-Elementen und treibenden Bässen. Clemens Bacher, also known as Cid Rim, likes to experiment with new music projects again and again. The Clonious (DJ-Set) (at) Er hat einen Hang zu obsessivem Perfektionismus – und er ist Vertreter eines recht unkonventionellen, fiktionalen Konzepts: The Clonious fügt das scheinbar Unbedeutende und das offensichtlich Wesentliche zusammen, zerlegt die Musik in Rhythmus und Harmonien, um dann am Ende festzustellen, dass Jazz unumstößlich die Mutter des Ganzen ist. Sein Debütalbum ist auf dem renommierten amerikanischen Label Ubiquity erschienen und hat The Clonious internationale Beachtung eingebracht. Sein erfrischend undogmatischer Zugang hat den jungen DJ und Produzenten zu einem der ganz Großen der hiesigen Clubszene heranwachsen lassen. He has a tendency for obsessive perfectionism – and he advocates a rather unconventional, fictional concept: The Clonious combines the seemingly insignificant and the obviously essential, breaks music into rhythms and harmonies, only to come to the ultimate conclusion that jazz is the mother of it all. His debut album was released on the renowned American label Ubiquity and gained The Clonious international recognition. His refreshingly undogmatic approach made the young DJ and producer one of the biggies of the local club scene.

Cold Mailman (no) Spätestens seit ihrem zweiten Album „Heavy Hearts“ und der zugehörigen Single „My Recurring Dream“ – inklusive Musikvideo von Norwegens gepriesenem Filmemacher André Chocron – kennt man Cold Mailman auch außerhalb ihres Heimatlandes. Die in Oslo ansässige Band versteht sich bestens auf intimen und verträumten Indie-Pop, der obendrein noch richtig gut produziert ist. Die detailverliebte Musik versprüht eine gewisse Leichtigkeit, ohne dabei aber in den Pop-Himmel abzuheben. At least since their second album “Heavy Hearts” and the single “My Recurring Dream” – music video by Norway’s much-lauded film maker André Chocron included – Cold Mailman are known beyond the borders of their native country. The Oslo-based band knows exactly what it takes for intimate and dreamy indie pop that’s well produced, on top of it. The music is rich in detail and radiates a certain lightness without drifting off into pop heaven.

Coldair (pl) Der Multi-Instrumentalist Tobiasz Biliński ist einer der vielversprechendsten Indie-Acts Polens. Ehemals Schlagzeuger der Band Kyst, hat der in Warschau lebende Musiker beschlossen, sich ganz seiner Pop-Leidenschaft hinzugeben. Daraus ist das Soloprojekt Coldair entstanden, mit dem Biliński schon viele renommierte Festivals bespielt hat – mal alleine, mal zu siebt, wie es sich halt ergibt. Die Musik klingt frei, ganz so, als würde sie auf Vorgaben keine Rücksicht nehmen. Trotz dieser Leichtigkeit hält sie aber die Spannung. The multi-instrumentalist Tobiasz Biliński is one of the most promising indie acts of Poland. The Warsaw-based musician and former drummer of the band Kyst has decided to dedicate himself to his passion for pop. The result is the solo project Coldair, with which Biliński has already been performing at many renowned festivals – at times on his own, at times with a handful of other musicians, as circumstances would have it. The music sounds free, as if it had no regards for rules. But despite its lightness, it keeps the tension.

Coma Stereo (si) Coma Stereo aus Slowenien setzen auf Post-Rock in einer Mischung aus Science-Fiction, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream und Sonic Youth. Die vierköpfige Band ist 2004 in Maribor gegründet worden und tourt mit bisher drei veröffentlichten Studioalben schon länger durch Europa. Mit düsteren Weltallklängen und genretypischen Riffs entsteht hier eine interessante Kombination aus Space-Night-Soundtrack und sphärischem bis hartem Post-Rock. Kurze Sprechpassagen und der gezielte Einsatz reduzierter Elektronik halten die Spannung der Songs im Überlängenformat hoch. Coma Stereo from Slovenia go for a post rock mix drawing on science fiction, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, and Sonic Youth. The four-piece band was formed in Maribor in 2004 and has been touring all over Europe with three released albums for quite some time. Gloomy tunes from outer space and genre-specific riffs create an interesting combination of space night soundtrack and spheric to hard post rock. Short passages of speech and the deliberate use of reduced electronic keep up the tension of the extra-long songs.

Maxime Firket hat klassische Musik studiert. Als Musiker profitiert er davon immer noch, auch wenn der Stil seiner Wahl ein anderer geworden ist. Techno und House weiß er gekonnt in seine eigene musikalische Sprache zu übersetzen. Charakteristisch für seinen Sound ist die wunderbare Kombination aus Schnörkellosigkeit und Emotionalität. Zu Beginn seiner Karriere bastelte er im Heimstudio Tracks mit Compuphonic-Synthesizern. Mittlerweile hat das renommierte Berliner Label Get Physical Firket unter Vertrag genommen und 2012 mit seinem Hit „Sunset“ weltweite Erfolge gefeiert. Maxime Firket studied classical music. He still profits from that as a musician, even though his style of choice has changed. He knows exactly how to translate techno and house into his own music language. The wonderful combination of straightforwardness and emotionality is characteristic of his sound. At the beginning of his career he crafted tracks with compuphonic synthesisers in his home studio. Firket has by now been signed by the renowned label Get Physical in Berlin. Cumpuphonic’s hit “Sunset” gained international success in 2012.

Die Einflüsse reichen dabei von Funk über Afro-Beat und Dub bis hin zu Jazz, Rhythm & Blues und sogar Drum & Bass. Aber das Wichtigste: Crunch 22 schaffen es, aus jedem ihrer Konzerte eine wahre Party zu machen. Mit Erez Todres von der Band The Apples an den Turntables sind sie mittlerweile auch international ein gern gebuchter Festival-Act. Thanks to its unconventional combination of drums, Rhodes piano, and turn tables, this trio from Israel is considered a bit of a sensation in the groove scene of its home country. CSS (br) Der Name der brasilianischen Band basiert auf einem Zitat von Beyoncé Knowles. Aus dem Portugiesischen übersetzt bedeutet Cansei de Ser Sexy, wofür die Abkürzung CSS steht, „keine Lust mehr, sexy zu sein“. Eine Begründung für die Wahl dieses Zitats gibt es nicht wirklich, aber so improvisiert und spontan wie der Name ist hier auch der Rest. Die Band fand 2003 zusammen, zu diesem Zeitpunkt beherrschte kaum eines ihrer Mitglieder ein Instrument. Und trotzdem oder gerade deswegen feierten CSS mit ihrem freundlich-ungestümen Electro-Pop einen Erfolg nach dem anderen. The name of the Brasilian band refers to a quote by Beyoncé Knowles. Translated from Portuguese, Cansei de Ser Sexy – the long form for CSS – means “tired of being sexy”. There isn’t really a reason for the choice of this quote, but everything else about the band is just as improvised and spontaneous as the name. The band formed in 2003; at that point hardly any of its members knew how to play an instrument. Still, or maybe because of that, CSS became quite successful with their nicely boisterous electro pop.

Und dann Fred Lyenn, der auf dem Bass in Richtung alles umfassende Auflösung treibt. Schließlich Steven Cassiers, der mit sanft und vorsichtig gespieltem Schlagzeug den Rhythmus vorgibt. Versiert vor sich hinjammend, streifen die Drei Musik richtungen wie Garage Jazz, Psychedelic Blues und Rock ’n’ Roll. Dans Dans – that’s the captivating result of the musical communication of three top musicians. First of all, there’s Bert Dockx – also performing at Waves Vienna as the lead singer of Flying Horseman – who enchants us with his timelessly beautiful guitar play. Then we have Fred Lyenn, who drifts towards all-encompassing dissolution with his bass. Finally: Steven Cassiers, who sets the rhythm with tenderly and carefully played drums. While jamming virtuously, the three graze music genres such as garage jazz, psychedelic blues, or rock ’n’ roll.

Deadnote Danse (at) Die Zwillinge Giovanna und Mario Fartacek bilden den Kern von Deadnote Danse. Ihre Vision eines intensiven Sounds prägt das Zusammenspiel dieser heimischen Pop-Formation. Giovannas ausdruckstarke Stimme, Marios kompetentes Gitarrenspiel und der Mix von analogen Instrumenten und elektronischen Klängen, Loops und Samples führen die Musik von Deadnote Danse in fast magische sonare Gefilde. Dort zu finden: mal unterkühltminimalistische, dann wieder brennend-heiße Melodien. The twins Giovanna and Mario Fartacek are the core of Deadnote Danse. Their vision of an intense sound shapes the creative work of this local pop formation. Giovanna’s expressive voice, Mario’s competent guitar play, and the mix of analogue instruments and electronic tunes, loops, and samples lead the music of Deadnote Danse into almost magically sonar realms. Dream Koala (fr) Der junge Pariser, der einen der schönsten Bandnamen trägt, die je erdacht worden sind, hypnotisiert in Chill-Wave-Manier: minimale Elektronik, repetitive Gitarren-Riffs und hauchdünner Gesang versetzen einen in ein verschwommenes Traumszenario. Träume sind für den 19-Jährigen häufig Inspirationsquelle für seine zum Teil an The XX erinnernden Songs, die er angeblich nach der Schule schreibt. Ob mit Flume in London oder mit XXYYXX in Paris – Dream Koala ist bei seinen Live-Auftritten immer wieder in prominenter Gesellschaft, und das zu Recht. The young musician from Paris, who works under one of the most beautiful monikers ever, hypnotises his audience in great chill wave fashion: minimal electronics, repetitive guitar riffs, and delicate vocals transport you to a blurry dream scenario. Dreams often are the source of inspiration for the 19-year old who allegedly writes his songs – which are at times reminiscent of The XX – after school. Whether with Flume in London or with XXYYXX in Paris – Dream Koala frequently performs with renowned acts, and justifiable so.

Lenka Dusilova (cz) Ihren musikalischen Werdegang hat Lenka Dusilová bereits in den späten 80ern im Kinderchor Bambini di Praga und gemeinsam mit ihrer Mutter in der Familienband RSP begonnen. Kein Wunder also, dass die Folgeprojekte – allen voran die Pop-Rock-Band Lucie – durchwegs erfolgreich gewesen sind. Als Solokünstlerin ist die stimmgewaltige Singer-Songwriterin aus Karlsbad eine Ausnahmeerscheinung. Nicht umsonst wird sie mit großer Regelmäßigkeit von den Lesern des Musikmagazins Report zur besten weiblichen Stimme Tschechiens gewählt. Lenka Dusilová already started her music career in the late 80s in the children’s choir Bambini di Praga and together with her mother in the family band RSP. Unsurprisingly, her subsequent projects – particularly the pop rock band Lucie – were all quite successful. As a solo artist, the powerful-voiced singer-songwriter from Karlovy Vary is an exceptional musician. There’s a reason why she’s repeatedly been voted the best female voice of the Czech Republic by the readers of the music magazine Report.

The End Band (at) Ein glamouröses Wald- und Wiesenorchester, bezaubernd, charmant und von ihrem Songwriter Matthäus mit einer Vision ausgestattet – so steht es im Pressetext dieser Band. Aus einer ländlichen Gegend in der Steiermark haben die fünf Herren ihren Weg in die große Stadt gefunden. Ihr Sound erinnert aber irgendwie immer noch an die dunkelgrünen steirischen Wälder. Beruhigend und auch etwas verletzlich wirkend, fließen die Songs wie Honigbäche zwischen den dicht aneinander stehenden Bäumen hindurch. A glamorous common or garden orchestra, captivating, charming, and equipped with the vision of their songwriter Matthäus – that’s what it says in the press release of this band. The five guys found their way to the big city from the Styrian countryside. Their sound is still somehow reminiscent of the dark green Styrian woods. Soothing and a little fragile, the songs flow between the densely grown trees like streams of honey.

Ernesty international (at) Begonnen hat alles vor sechs Jahren, als der Singer-Songwriter Ernst Tiefenthaler im Haus seiner verstorbenen Großeltern eine Handvoll berückender Lieder aufnahm, um diese einige Zeit später auf dem Album „Ernesty International“ zu veröffentlichen. Zuvor war Tiefenthaler bereits in den Bands Bell Etage und Hotel Prestige aktiv. Bei den Live-Auftritten von Ernesty International kommt es nun immer wieder zu kleinen Reunions mit den Bandkollegen, aber auch zu Gastauftritten von Sängerin Eloui, deren gefühlvolle Stimme auf allen vier Ernesty-Platten zu hören ist. It all started six years ago when the singer-songwriter Ernst Tiefenthaler recorded a handful of entrancing songs at the house of his deceased grandparents to later release them on the album “Ernesty International”. Tiefenthaler had previously been active in the bands Bell Etage and Hotel Prestige. The live performances of Ernesty International now occasionally feature reunions with members of said bands but also guest appearances of the singer Eloui, whose expressive voice can be heard on all four Ernesty records.

the experimental tropic blues band (be) Seit ihrer Gründung 2001 im belgischen Lüttich hat die Experimental Tropic Blues Band immer mehr Unterstützer und Fans gewinnen können. Vor allem wegen ihrer wilden Bühnen-Performances inklusive Kostümen und Masken – und natürlich wegen der rauen Mischung aus Blues und Rock ’n’ Roll, die die Band zelebriert. Das Trio absolvierte bereits Hunderte von Shows in ganz Europa und Nordamerika, unter anderem mit Acts wie den Cramps, Heavy Trash und Jay Reatard. „Liquid Love“, ihr aktuelles Album haben die Drei dann auch gleich in New York gemeinsam mit Jon Spencer aufgenommen. Nathan Fake (Live) (uk) Wenn einem der Name Nathan Fake nichts sagt, so hat man sich wohl die letzten zehn Jahre wenig mit elektronischer Tanzmusik auseinandergesetzt. Der gerade mal 30-jährige Engländer zählt schon eine Weile zu den alten Hasen. Fake, der sich zwischen Minimal Techno, Progressive und Electro bewegt, bezeichnet sich selbst als „keinen guten DJ“, weshalb er auf der Bühne lieber live an Laptop und Outboard mit seinen Samples hantiert. Auch aus der Perspektive des Publikums hat das natürlich mehr zu bieten als ein gewöhnliches DJ-Set – sowohl optisch als auch klanglich. If you don’t know the name Nathan Fake, you probably haven’t concerned yourself much with electronic dance music during the last decade. The 30-year young Englishman has been considered an old hand for quite some time now. Fake, who moves between minimal techno, progressive, and electro, says of himself that he is not a good DJ, which is why he prefers to work with his laptop, outboard, and samples live on stage. And the audience, too, profits from this way of working as com pared to a common DJ set – visually as well as acoustically.

Farewell Dear ghost (at) Farewell Dear Ghost ist ein Projekt des steirischen Singer-Songwriters Philipp Szalay. Ein Projekt, das quasi einfach so passiert ist – während der Aufnahmen für sein Debütalbum. Und es gibt wohl Schlimmeres, als während des Aufnahmeprozesses mit völlig neuen Inspirationen und Ideen konfrontiert zu werden, vor allem, wenn diese in einem so leidenschaftlichen Projekt wie Farewell Dear Ghost münden. Die dynamischen und zugleich romantischen Songs erzählen vom Wachsen, von Veränderung und vom Scheitern, sie erzählen vom Leben. Farewell Dear Ghost is the project of the Styrian singer-songwriter Philipp Szalay. A project that virtually happened just like that – during the recording of his debut album. And there are probably worse things than being confronted with totally new inspirations and ideas during the recording process; especially if they result in such a passionate project as Farewell Dear Ghost. The dynamic and simultaneously romantic songs tell of growing, changing, and failing – they tell of life.

The German-Austrian duo Fijuka met at the University of Arts in Vienna: Ankathie and Judith Filimónova share a common vision of dark but humorous pop. Both of them worked on other music projects before, but only as Fijuka are they able to live and realise their ideas. Their multiinstrumental DIY pop serves as their very own playground for trying out new ways to create music. With every song, they describe a new scene from their own or other people’s lives.

Dass es auch ordentlich was auf die Ohren gibt, das stellen Fuckhead mit von Techno bis Ambient und härtestem Rock gespeistem Industrial-Noise sicher. Nichts für schwache Nerven! A Gesamtkunstwerk, a seething colossus, a violent revelation – this legendary Austrian band is exactly that. On stage, the tattooed performance berserkers regularly make the audience’s jaws drop – sometimes in skin-tight costumes, sometimes draped in white sheets, or simply halfnaked. The GFs (cz) 2011 wurden diese fünf Jungs von der Tschechischen Akademie der Popmusik zum Newcomer des Jahres gewählt. Die fast 500 Konzerte, die die Band in den letzten Jahren absolviert hat, haben sie durch ganz Europa geführt. Mit ihrem locker-flockigen Akustik-Sound lassen sie dabei auch an veregneten Tagen die Sonne scheinen. Klare, saubere Gitarren-Riffs dominieren den freundlichen Rock-’n’-Roll der GFs und der oft zweistimmige Gesang tut sein Übriges, um auch die letzten Regenwolken zu vertreiben. In 2011, these five lads were voted newcomers of the year by the Czech Academy Of Popular Music. The almost 500 gigs the band played during the last few years lead them all over Europe. With their easy-going acoustic sound they make the sun shine even on rainy days. Bei einem Wien-Auftritt lernt der Brite Tim Simenon, Mastermind hinter Bomb The Bass, Schlagzeuger Roman Lugmayr und Keyboarder Georg Lichtenauer kennen. Die Drei verstehen sich auf Anhieb so gut, dass Simenon sogar nach Österreich zieht. Gemeinsam mit der kongenialen Sängerin Laura Gomez entwickeln sie das Projekt Ghost Capsules, das sich laut Selbstbeschreibung auf Musik für die Nacht verlegt hat: „Dark chocolate electro, if you like, shot through with a dash of espresso, a twist of chili even.“ During a gig in Vienna, the Brit Tim Simenon – mastermind behind Bomb The Bass – meets drummer Roman Lugmayr and keyboard player Georg Lichtenauer. The three immediately get along so well that Simenon even moves to Austria. Girls In Hawaii (be) Warum sich die Herren von Girls In Hawaii nicht Boys From Bruxelles nennen, sei dahingestellt. Viel wichtiger ist, dass die belgische Indie-Band nach Jahren der Stille nach einem schweren Schicksalsschlag wieder zurück ist. Ihr neues Album, aufgenommen in Paris und produziert von Legende Tchad Blake, wird diesen Herbst erscheinen. Bereits in ihrem Gründungsjahr 2003 galten Girls In Hawaii als neue belgische Hoffnung und sie erreichten bald auch große Bekanntheit weit über Belgien hinaus. Die Vorfreude auf ihr Comeback ist jedenfalls groß. Why the guys of Girls In Hawaii haven’t named themselves Boys From Bruxelles remains an open question. What’s more important is that the Belgian indie band is back after years of silence following a tragic stroke of fate. Their new album, which was recorded in Paris and produced by the legendary Tchad Blake, will be released this autumn. Already in its founding year of 2003, the band was considered a new Belgian hope and soon they gained recognition beyond the borders of their home country. We really can’t wait for their comeback!

Aus räudigem Sixties-, Blues- und Surf-Rock erschaffen sie eine Musik, deren eingängige Riffs selbst Godzilla in die Flucht schlagen würden. Als Brutal Boogie bezeichnen sie ihren Stil selbst. King Kong Kolic an den Drums und Mutant Pyroman am Bass gießen das rhythmische Fundament, auf dem Rocco Carlettos Gitarren-Riffs und Martin Opitz’ hypnotische Stimme thronen. Wenn Letzterer voller Enthusiasmus ins Mikrofon plärrt, erinnert er sogar ein wenig an Jack Black – und das nicht nur musikalisch. Go! Go! Gorillo are the King Kongs of rock ’n’ roll. Drawing on rough sixties, blues, and surf rock, their catchy riffs would scare away even Godzilla. They themselves call their style brutal boogie. King Kong Kolic on the drums and Mutant Pyroman on the bass lay the rhythmic foundation for Rocco Carletto’s guitar riffs and Martin Opitz’ hypnotic voice. When the latter enthusiastically bellows into the microphone, he even reminds us of Jack Black – and not just as far as the music is concerned.

Ian Green (dj-Set) (si) Der Musikproduzent und DJ Ian Green ist auch Gründer des MultimediaKollektivs und -Labels Chakra. Seine ersten Produktionen hat er bereits 2005 veröffentlicht. Seither hat sich der in Laibach lebende Slowene ganz der Musik verschrieben. Neben seinen eigenen Produktionen (von Hip-Hop über House bis hin zu Techno und Progressive) ist er auch für ein Projekt zur Förderung junger Talente der osteuropäischen und besonders der slowenischen elektronischen Musikszene verantwortlich – gute Sache! The music producer and DJ Ian Green is also the founder of the multimedia collective and label Chakra. He released his first productions in 2005. Since then, the Ljubljana-based Slovene has dedicated himself to music. In addition to his own productions (from hip hop to house to techno and progressive), he is also responsible for a project that supports young talents of the Eastern European and particularly the Slovenian electronic music scene – a worthy cause!

No, this isn’t about the debut novel of the writer Salman Rushdie, though it inspired the name of the band. Rather, Grimus is a successful alternative rock act from Rumania. Quite a lot has changed since they represented their home country at the Global Battle Of The Bands in London in 2009: two new albums, numerous singles in the alternative charts, performances at the most important Eastern European festivals, and support shows for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Placebo in Bucharest.

Hinter Headbirds verbirgt sich ein junger Spanier namens Dani Guijarro, der vor seinem Soloprojekt als Teil des Electro-Kollektivs C156 aktiv gewesen ist. Der aus Barcelona stammende Musiker lernte schnell die Vorzüge der Kombination von unterschiedlichen Stilistiken zu schätzen. Mit dem Fokus auf die Tanzfläche gerichtet, erklingen bei Headbirds klare Linien mit einem immanenten Club-Beat, der permanent antreibt, aber durchaus variiert. Nach einigen Remixes und EPs soll, noch bevor sich das Jahr dem Ende zuneigt, ein Album erscheinen. Headbirds is the project of the young Spanish artist Dani Guijarro, who used to be part of an electro collective called C156. The musician from Barcelona quickly discovered the merits of combining different styles. With the focus directed at the dance floor, Headbirds goes for clear-cut sounds with an immanent club beat that is insistent but diverse. After a number of remixes and EPs, he will release an album before the end of the year.

Hella Comet (at) Irgendwo zwischen Post- und Noise-Rock angesiedelt, geben Hella Comet sich gerne von ihrer sinistren Seite. Wohl etwas ironisch bezeichnen sie ihren Stil auf Facebook als „ShoeMetall“. Definitiv ein Verwirrspiel, denn Hella Comets Musik besteht aus viel mehr als aus plattgetretenen RockPhrasen. Um FM4 zu zitieren: „eine Hochschaubahnfahrt voller in sich verzahnter Noise-Rock- und Shoegazing-Melodien, die einem ein bisserl den Kopf und das Hirn durchblasen.“ With their music oscillating between post and noise rock, Hella Comet like to show themselves from their sinister side. On their Facebook page, they somewhat ironically describe their style as “ShoeMetall”. Definitely a deliberate confusion, because the music of Hella Comet consists of much more than just worn out rock phrases. To quote the Austrian radio station FM4: “a rollercoaster ride full of interlocked noise rock and shoegazing melodies that blow through your head and your brain a wee bit.”

Hurricane Dean (de) Wie wir aus der Meteorologie wissen, werden Naturgewalten entfesselt, wenn warm und kalt aufeinandertreffen. Und so fegt Hurricane Dean über unwettererprobte Festivals und großstädtische Tanzflächen. Aber keine Angst: alles in rein musikalischer Form! Ihren Stil, ein dunkler Wave-Sound versehen mit einer vollen Breitseite Indie-Rock, bezeichnen die vier Ostfriesen als „Bright Wave“. Melancholie verwandelt sich dabei in stürmische Energie und lässt Musik entstehen, die frisch, aber dennoch auch vertraut klingt. As we know from meteorology, forces of nature are set free when warm and cold collide. And so, Hurricane Dean sweeps across stormproof festivals and urban dance floors. But fear not: only in terms of music! The four musicians from Eastern Friesland call their style, a dark wave sound with plenty of indie rock elements, “Bright Wave”. Melancholia turns into fierce energy and creates music, which sounds fresh but nevertheless familiar.

Mit den Chainreactions, dem portugiesischen Harfenisten Eduardo Raon, dem britischen Schlagzeuger Tom Marsh und den drei aus Dominica, Ägypten und dem Iran stammenden Sängerinnen Nomadee, Aisha und Briknie, füllt er zeitgenössische ClubSounds, Dub-Rhythmen, Jazz, Soul und noch einiges mehr in den Schmelztiegel. Hypnotisch, fordernd und immer wieder auch tanzbar. Wolfgang Schlögel, internationally known as a member of the downbeat heroes Sofa Surfers, is back with his project I-Wolf – and this time he’s got a whole pack gathered around him. Iceage (dk) Diese vier jungen Herren kommen aus Dänemark, genauer gesagt aus der Hauptstadt Kopenhagen. Seit 2008 machen sie gemeinsam Musik der etwas härteren Gangart: Ihr Stil ist stark geprägt von Punk-Rock, PostPunk und Noise-Rock. „New Brigade“, ihr Debütalbum, ist Anfang 2011 erschienen – und hat der Band erfreuliche Reaktionen seitens Publikum und Presse beschert. Mittlerweile steht Album Nummer zwei in den Läden, es trägt den einladenden Titel „You’re Nothing“. Wuchtige Musik, in der große Helden wie Hüsker Dü oder Fugazi nachklingen. These four guys are from Denmark, more precisely from its capital Copenhagen. Since 2008, they make music of the somewhat rougher kind: their style is heavily influenced by punk rock, post punk, and noise rock. The debut album “New Brigade” was released in early 2011 and was received well by the audience as well as the press. Now, their second album, invitingly titled “You’re Nothing”, was released. Forceful music that is reminiscent of Hüsker Dü and Fugazi.

Illute (DE) Die Berlinerin Ute Kneisel ist eigentlich Illustratorin, aber bunte Bilder allein reichen ihr, so scheint’s, nicht aus. Weshalb sie in ihrer Freizeit leichtfüßige Lieder schreibt – auf Englisch, Spanisch und sogar Japanisch, zumeist aber doch auf Deutsch. Dabei singt sie in schlichten und oft verzückend ironischen Worten von Wünschen, vom Loslassen und von Beziehungen. Gemeinsam mit dem Wiener Produzenten Alexander Nefzger vertont sie minimalistisch instrumentierte Akustikstücke. Das bekannteste davon: „Viva la ignorancia“. Ute Kneisel from Berlin actually is an illustrator, but colourful pictures, it seams, are not enough for her. That’s why she lightfootedly writes songs in her spare time – in English, Spanish, and even Japanese, but mostly in German. In simple and often charmingly ironic words she sings about longing, about letting go, and about relationships. Together with the Viennese producer Alexander Nefzger, she records minimalistically orchestrated acoustic songs. The best known one: “Viva la ignorancia”.

It’s Everyone Else (si) Ein paar verzerrte Synthies, ausgewählte Samples und zwei Stimmen – zusammen ergibt das den charakteristischen Sound von It’s Everyone Else. Von Post-Industrial-Hardcore über laut kreischenden Synth-Rock bis hin zu melancholischen, fast schon trauervollen Melodien reicht die Bandbreite. Eine durchaus effektive Mischung, mit der sich die Band in Slowenien (und darüber hinaus) bereits einen Namen hat machen können. Wenig überraschend, sind die Live-Shows des Duos für ihren stets schrägen und vor allem unvorhersehbaren Charakter bekannt. A couple of distorted synths, selected samples, and two voices – add it up and you get the characteristic sound of It’s Everyone Else. The spectrum ranges from post-industrial hardcore to loudly screaming synth rock, to melancholic, almost mournful melodies. A pretty effective mix that already gained the band a reputation in Slovenia and beyond. Unsurprisingly, the live shows of the duo are known for being weird and, above all, unpredictable.

Japanther (us) Japanther aus Brooklyn sind nicht einfach eine Band. Vielmehr handelt es sich bei Japanther um ein Kunstprojekt, gegründet von Matt Reilly und Ian Vanek während ihrer Studienzeit am Pratt Institute in New York. Das Duo hat in den zwölf Jahren seines Bestehens schon mit den unterschiedlichsten Künstlern zusammengearbeitet und war 2011 sogar auf der Biennale in Venedig mit dabei. Den Ruf, absolut einzigartige, fast schon skurrile Performer zu sein, haben sich die beiden auf jeden Fall verdient. Ihr dem Lärm nicht abgeneigter DIY-Rock weiß aber auch abseits der Bühne zu überzeugen. Japanther from Brooklyn aren’t just a band. Rather, Japanther is an art project started by Matt Reilly and Ian Vanek while they were studying at Pratt Institute in New York. During it’s twelve years of existence, the duo has been working with various artists and was even invited to the Biennale in Venice 2011. The two definitely deserve the reputation of being unique, if not bizarre, performers. But their noisy DIY rock is also highly convincing off the stage.

alise joste (lv) Wäre die Welt so wie die Lieder von Alise Joste, hätte es die Menschheit inzwischen geschafft, mit sich selbst und ihrer Umgebung in Einklang zu leben. Vielleicht ist dieses Bild etwas zu kitschig, aber hört man die Musik der jungen Lettin, verspürt man so etwas wie absolute Harmonie und Zufriedenheit. Ungezwungen und melodisch äußerst raffiniert, singt Joste mit zaghafter Stimme teils auf Englisch, teils auf Lettisch und begleitet sich dabei auf der Gitarre. Erstaunlich erfrischende Musik in bester Singer-Songwriter-Manier. If the world was like alise Joste’s songs, mankind would have managed to live in peace with one another and their environment by now. maybe this picture is a little too corny, but when you hear the music of the young woman from latvia you fell something like harmony and contentment. nonchalantly and melodically quite subtly, Jose sings with a timid voice – partly in english, partly in latvian – and accompanies herself on the guitar. astonishingly refreshing singer-songwriter music.

Die Texte von Julian & der Fux haben nicht gerade etwas Unbekümmertes, eher etwas Schweres, manchmal gar etwas Morbides. Und mindestens ebenso etwas Abenteuerliches, Sehnsüchtiges. Das erzeugt eine gewisse Aufbruchsstimmung. Zu den anschaulichen Lyrics gesellen sich atmosphärische Klänge aus dem Laptop. Die beiden Wiener Produzenten Julian Hruza und Dominic Plainer aka Lupo haben Julian & der Fux 2012 gegründet. Nach der Debütsingle „Speckbrot“ und deren Nachfolgerin „Altes Ego“, die bis auf Platz drei der FM4 Charts geklettert ist, darf man auf das kommende Album der beiden gespannt sein. The lyrics of Julian & der Fux aren’t exactly easy-go-lucky but rather heavy, sometimes even morbid. And at least as adventurous and wistful. That makes for a certain optimistic mood. The vivid lyrics are complemented by atmospheric laptop-generated music. The band was founded in 2012 by the two Viennese producers Julian Hruza and Dominic Plainer aka Lupo. After their debut single “Speckbrot” and its follow-up “Altes Ego”, which made it to number three on radio FM4’s charts, we’re looking forward to the duo’s forthcoming album.

Kate Boy (se) „Everything we touch turns to gold“, singt Kate Akhurst, das australische Einsprengsel in der vierköpfigen schwedischen Band, auf deren Debütsingle. Und Recht hat sie. Gerade mal drei Kate-Boy-Songs sind bislang in Umlauf, aber alle drei haben zu wahren Begeisterungsstürmen in der Blogosphäre rund um den Globus geführt. Im Zusammenspiel mit ihrem mysteriösen Image könnte der Mix aus schmutzigen Synths, messerscharfen Beats und großen Pop-Melodien die Band zum nächsten heißen Ding aus dem kalten Norden machen. “Everything we touch turns to gold”, sings Kate Akhurst, the only Australian in the four-piece Swedish band, on their debut single. And she’s quite right about that. Only three Kate Boy songs have been released so for, but all three of them were received enthusiastically in the blogosphere all around the planet. Their mysterious image combined with the mix of dirty synths, trenchant beats, and grand pop melodies could make the band the next big thing from the cold North.

Kieslowski (cz) Kieslowski nennt sich das neue Projekt des tschechischen Musikers DKP. Zuvor bereits in verschiedensten Bands aktiv (unter anderem in der seines Landsmanns Xavier Baumaxa), macht er nun gemeinsam mit der Pianistin Maria Kieslowski Musik, die auf dem rauen, vertrauten Sound der akustischen Gitarre kombiniert mit den sanften Klängen des Klaviers basiert. Für eine zusätzliche Kontrastebene sorgen die raffiniert eingesetzten Gesangstimmen der beiden Musiker. Ihr Album „Tiché lásky“ ist ein fragiles, fast schon intimes Zugeständnis an die Liebe, die tief in den Menschen schlummert. Kieslowski is the most recent project of the Czech musician DKP. Previously part of various other bands (for instance in that of his fellow countryman Xavier Baumaxa), he now makes music together with the pianist Maria Kieslowski. It is based on the raw, familiar sound of acoustic guitars combined with the gentle piano tunes. The artfully employed singing voices of the two musicians add an additional contrasting layer. Their album “Tiché lásky” is a fragile, almost intimate concession to the love that lies hidden within people.

Kill Kenny (si) Seit 2009 ist die slowenische Band Kill Kenny aktiv. Nach anfänglichen Versuchen in den unterschiedlichsten Musikstilen fand man bald Gefallen an den rockigen Seiten des Spektrums. Sich dem Rock ’n’ Roll zuneigende Rhythmen sind auch charakteristisch für den Sound der jungen Band. Die unbändige Energie der vier Jungs aus Novo Mesto begeistert längst das Konzertpublikum in ihrem Heimatland. In Wien wird es Songs aus ihrem Debütalbum „Josh“ zu hören geben, das im Dezember erscheinen soll. The Slovenian band Kill Kenny has been around since 2009. After initial attempts at various music styles, they soon took a liking to the rocking sides of the spectrum. And hence rock ’n’ roll rhythms are characteristic for the sound of the young band. The wild energy of the four lads from Novo Mesto has thrilled the concert audience in their home country for quite some time now. In Vienna, they’ll delight us with songs from their debut album “Josh”, which will be released in December.

Martin Klein (at) Singer-Songwriter Martin Klein scheint sich nicht wirklich etwas aus musikalischen Schubladen und Erwartungshaltungen zu machen. War sein Debüt „Songs For My Piano“ aus dem Jahr 2008 noch im Trio eingespielt worden und auf englischsprachige Songs konzentriert, so überraschte er mit seinem nächsten Album „Lass uns bleiben“ solo und ausschließlich auf Deutsch. Auch mit seinem dritten Werk bleibt er unberechenbar: Auf „Tracks For My Keyboard“ widmet er sich experimentelleren Klängen aus dem Synthesizer. Singer-songwriter Martin Klein doesn’t really seem to care about artistic pigeonholes and expectations. While his 2008 debut “Songs For My Piano” was recorded by a trio and featured songs in English, he surprised us with his second album “Lass uns bleiben”, which he recorded on his own and in German. He remains unpredictable on his third record: “Tracks From My Keyboard” is dedicated to more experimental synthesiser sounds.

Aidan Knight (ca) Julia, Dave, Colin, Olivier und Frontmann Aidan, der Namensgeber dieses Quintetts, kommen aus Kanada. Als Band verstehen sie es bestens, mit Klängen – von elegischem Country über Indie-Rock bis hin zu experimentierfreudigem Folk – Gefühle hervorzurufen. Mit akustischer sowie elektrischer Gitarre, Schlagzeug, Geige, Trompete, Englisch- sowie Flügelhorn sind die Fünf bewaffnet, um gemeinsam Aidans Botschaft unters Volk zu bringen: Es ist eine verrückte Welt, in der wir leben – doch es gibt Hoffnung. Balsam für die Seele! Julia, Dave, Colin, Olivier, and front man Aidan – after whom the quintet is named – are from Canada. The band knows exactly how to evoke emotions through sounds – from plaintive country to indie rock to experimental folk. The five musicians are armed with acoustic and electric guitars, drums, violins, trumpets, English horns as well as flugelhorns and together they spread Aidan’s message across the globe: it’s a crazy world we’re living in – but there’s hope. Kreisky (at) Der Appell an die Jugend, das Hirn zu aktivieren und nachzudenken, ist dieser Band wohl genauso ein Anliegen wie der Appell, den Körper zu aktivieren und sich zur Musik gehen zu lassen. In der sogenannten Spießer generation keine einfache Angelegenheit, doch Kreisky sind inzwischen alte Hasen und seit jeher in bester Form. Das Rezept ist klar: Es braucht vor allem Lautstärke und gute Texte. Die vier Musiker aus Wien sorgen im deutschsprachigen Raum schon seit acht Jahren für krachigen Rock und Subversivität. Und es ist kein Ende in Sicht – zum Glück! The appeal to the youth to activate their brains and start thinking is probably as important to this band as the appeal to activate the body and to let the music take you over. Not an easy task in the so-called generation of squares, but Kreisky are old hands by now and have always been in great shape. The remedy is simple: it takes, above all, high volume and good lyrics. The four musicians from Vienna have been spreading their noisy rock and subversiveness in the German-speaking world for eight years now. And there’s no end in sight – thank fuck!

Kristoffer & The Harbour heads (se) Kristoffer Ragnstam, Lead-Sänger und Mastermind dieser schwedischen Band, war zuvor schon als Singer-Songwriter tätig. Die dabei gesammelte Erfahrung hört man auch im lebhaften Indie-Folk von Kristoffer & The Harbour Heads. Nach Support-Shows für Mumford & Sons, Debbie Harry und Maia Hirasawa hieß es für die Band erst mal: ab ins Studio! Das Resultat „Little Goes A Long Way“ bescherte ihr großartiges Feedback. Auf der Bühne erzeugt das Trio einen Sound, den man in seinem Umfang eher von einer siebenköpfigen Kombo erwarten würde. Kristoffer Ragnstam, lead singer and mastermind of this Swedish band, has previously made music on his own as a singer-songwriter. The experience he acquired back then becomes obvious in the lively indie folk music of Kristoffer & The Harbour Heads. After support shows for Mumford & Sons, Debbie Harry, and Maia Hirasawa, the band finally made it to the studio. The resulting “Little Goes A Long Way” got fantastic feedback. Live on stage, the trio creates such an enormous sound you’ll think it’s a seven-piece combo on stage.

Krystal Klear (DJ-Set) (IE) Der 25-jährige Ire Dec Lennon aka Krystal Klear ist spätestens seit seiner Aufnahme in die Red Bull Music Academy gern gesehener DJ und Gast in der europäischen Clubszene. So gab er auch heuer zum 15. Geburtstag der Academy im Rahmen des Sonar Festivals in Barcelona sein Können zum Besten. Als Resident des legendären Clubs Hoya:Hoya in Manchester balanciert er auf einer feinen Linie zwischen Boogie, Funk, Disco und Garage House – und zwar mit Bravour und ohne auf die richtige Portion Humor zu vergessen. At least since his acceptance at the Red Bull Music Academy, the 25-year old Irish lad Dec Lennon aka Krystal Klear has become a welcome DJ and guest in the European club scene. At this year’s celebrations of the 15th birthday of the Academy, he showed the audience at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona what he is capable of. As resident DJ at the legendary club Hoya:Hoya in Manchester, he balances on the fine line between boogie, funk, disco, and garage house – with flying colours and a good amount of humour.

Leure (au) Leure ist das elektronisch orientierte Soloprojekt der Australierin Ash Hendriks, auch bekannt als eine Hälfte des Indie-Duos Wolves At The Door. Nachdem ihr Bandkollege von Perth nach New York gezogen war, startete die Musikerin zuerst unter ihrem eigenen Namen und später unter dem Pseudonym Leure eine Solokarriere. Erst im Frühjahr vergangenen Jahres begann sie sich mit elektronischer Musik auseinanderzusetzen. Hört man jedoch die feinen, zerbrechlichen Melodien und fast schon sphärischen Klänge, könnte man meinen, es wäre ein langjähriger Profi am Werk. Leure is the electronically oriented solo project of the Australian Ash Hendriks, also known as one half of the indie duo Wolves At The Door. After her band colleague moved from Perth to New York, she started a solo career, first under her real name, later under the alias Leure. Only in spring of last year did she start making electronic music. But once you hear the fine, fragile melodies and the almost spheric sounds, you’ll think it’s an old pro at work.

Lovely Quinces (hr) Vergangenen Herbst veröffentlichte Dunja Ercegović ihre ersten Songs als Lovely Quinces. Wenige Monate später schon teilt sie sich die Bühnen mit Größen wie Kurt Vile und Skunk Anansie. Wenn die zierliche Kroatin diese so ganz allein und nur mit ihrer Gitarre in der Hand betritt, fragt man sich für den Bruchteil einer Sekunde, wie das so schnell hat gehen können. Fängt sie dann aber zu spielen an, ist alles offenkundig: ihre kristallklare Stimme, das charmante Gitarrenspiel und der bezaubernde Anblick – eine unschlagbare Kombination! Last autumn, Dunja Ercegović released her first songs as Lovely Quinces. Only a few months later she shares stages with established acts such as Kurt Vile and Skunk Anansie. When the petite Croatian walks on stage all alone with just her guitar in her hands one wonders, for a split second, how that could happen so fast. Once she starts playing, however, it becomes apparent: her crystal clear voice, the charming guitar play, and the lovely appearance – a winning combination!

M185 (at) Pulsierende, repetitive Rhythmen und schleppender Sprechgesang bauen einen fast psychedelisch-krautrockigen Sog auf, der sich mitunter an den Überhelden Sonic Youth orientiert. Das alles mit konsequentem Druck, mit lauten Gitarren und vollem Sound. Gelegentliche Überraschungen, wie etwa Saxophon-Sequenzen und subtil eingesetzte elektronische Elemente zeigen, dass die mit einem Amadeus Award ausgezeichneten M185 eben nicht bloß eine weitere Rockband sind. Pulsing, repetitive rhythms and drawn-out recitatives build up an almost psychedelic krautrock pull that’s now and again inspired by the grand heroes Sonic Youth. And all of that with a consequent pressure, loud guitars, and a full sound. Occasional surprises such as saxophone sequences and subtle electronic elements show that the Amadeus Award winners are not just another rock band.

Magic Arm (uk) Marc Rigelsford aka Magic Arm aus Manchester hat das klassische Klangtüftlersyndrom: Seine Musik macht er gänzlich im Alleingang – alle Instrumente werden von ihm eingespielt und anschließend auf dem Rechner zusammengefügt. Sich tagelang in einem Raum voller Instrumente zu verschanzen, wird hier zum Alltag – oder gar zum Zwang. Laut seiner Website hat Rigelsford jahrelang penibel an seinem Sound gefeilt. Bei diesen klanglichen Ergebnissen ist das auch nicht allzu überraschend. Der elektronisch erweiterte Kammer-Pop von Magic Arm katapultiert einen stets in andere, schönere Welten. Marc Rigelsford aka Magic Arm from Manchester has the classic sound tinkerer syndrome: he creates his music all by himself – he plays all the instruments and puts them together on his laptop. Locking oneself up in a room full of instruments for days on end becomes a routine – or even a compulsion. According to his website, Rigelsford has been tweaking his sound meticulously for years. And the results suggest exactly that. The electronically extended chamber pop of Magic Arm always shoots you into other, wonderful worlds.

Milk Drinkers (si) Endlich mal eine Band, deren Name leicht erklärt ist: gegründet wurde das slowenische Duo nämlich beim Milchtrinken. So einfach kann’s gehen. Samo Kapljic und Julian Daniel sind in der slowenischen Clubszene mittlerweile ziemlich bekannt. Mit ihrem individuellen Style bringen sie stets frischen Wind in ihre Auftritte und DJ-Sets. Immer mit dabei: ihre Lederjacken und die obligate Flasche – nein, nicht Milch – Jack Daniel’s. Das passt auch gut zu ihrer Selbstbeschreibung: „Where dance music ends and the rebellion begins.“ Finally a band whose name is easily explained: the Slovenian duo was formed while drinking milk. It can be that simple. Samo Kapljic and Julian Daniel are quite well known in the Slovenian club scene. With their individual style, their performances and DJ sets never get boring. Obligatory accessories: their leather jackets and a bottle of - no, not milk – Jack Daniel’s. That fits their self-description quite nicely: “Where dance music ends and rebellion begins.”

Mmoths (ie) Jack Colleran aka Mmoths ist einer der vielversprechendsten Acts des Jahres. Der aus Irland stammende Elektronik-Musiker bastelt seit 2010 an einer einzigartigen Mischung aus Chill-Wave, Future Bass und Electronica. Das Ergebnis: abwechslungsreiche, eingängige und vor allem innovative Tracks, die weit über die Grenzen seiner Heimat hinweg für Furore sorgen. Im April 2012 spielte Mmoths einen umjubelten Gig beim SXSW-Festival in Texas und durfte kurz danach für prominente Acts wie At The Drive-in oder Aphex Twin eröffnen. Ein Musiker, von dem man noch viel hören wird. Jack Colleran aka Mmoths is one of the most promising acts of the year. The Irish electronic musician has been working on a unique mix of chill wave, future bass, and electronica since 2010. The result: diverse, catchy, and – above all – innovative tracks which are causing quite a stir far beyond the boarders of his home country. In April 2012, Mmoths played a celebrated gig at the SXSW festival in Texas and soon after supported acts such as At The Drive-in or Aphex Twin. A musician you’ll be hearing more of in the future.

Kopfhörermusik passt als Beschreibung für den Output dieses Trios sehr gut. Dabei muss betont werden, dass man nicht unbedingt mit geschlossenen Augen in sich versunken zu sein braucht, um aus Monophonas Downtempo-Sound das optimale Hörerlebnis herauszuholen. Auch in der Gruppe ist dies möglich – konzentriertes Zuhören vorausgesetzt. Dass die Vorgeschichten der Band-Mitglieder von Drum & Bass und Singer-Song writer-Folk handeln, ist nur schlüssig – die beiden Genres können als Eckpunkte gesehen werden, innerhalb derer sich die sinistren Klänge Mono phonas bewegen. Headphone music is a quite fitting description for the output of this trio. But it needs to be pointed out that you don’t necessarily have to get lost inside yourself with your eyes closed in order to get the best possible audio experience of Monophona’s downtempo sound. That’s also possible in a crowd of people – provided you listen carefully. That the band members have previously been working in the fields of drum & bass and singer-songwriter folk makes sense – the two genres are the corner stones between which the sinister tunes of Monophona are oscillating.

Mozes & The Firstborn (nl) Wie ein Pfitschipfeil startet das junge niederländische Quartett los. Von amerikanischem Garage-Rock der 70er inspiriert, singen sie mit einer gewissen, nennen wir es mal Rotzlöffel-Attitüde von adoleszenten Freuden und Problemen. Dass Dosenbier und Skateboards dabei stets in Reichweite sind, scheint irgendwie logisch und passend. Das wirklich gelungene Debütalbum der Band erscheint beim österreichischen Label Siluh Records. The young Dutch foursome goes off like a rocket. Influenced by the American garage rock of the 70s, they sing of adolescent joys and troubles with a certain, lets call it, snotty brat attitude. That fact that canned beer and skateboards are always at hand only seems logical and fitting. The band’s really good debut album is released on the Austrian label Siluh Records.

Múm (is) Island ist ja bekannt für seine grandiosen Musikexporte. Und Múm kann man getrost zu diesen zählen. Von Reykjavík aus hat sich die Band weltweit in die Herzen der Musikfans gespielt. Gerne mit dem Schlagwort „experimental music“ versehen, lassen Múm Klangkollage und Songwriting ineinander übergehen. Mal mit und mal ohne Gesang führt einen die Band durch das Paradies. Die schönen Melodien, die sensible Wahl der Klänge und deren Harmonien versprechen ein unvergessliches Konzerterlebnis. Iceland is known for its fantastic music exports. And Múm undoubtedly is one of them. The band from Reykjavík has conquered the hearts of music fans all over the planet. Often labelled as “experimental music”, Múm blend sound collages and songwriting. The band leads you through paradise; sometimes with vocals, sometimes without. The beautiful melodies, the sensitive choice of sounds and their harmonies promise an unforgettable concert experience.

My Heart Belongs To Cecilia Winter (ch) Bei einer Theater-Performance lernen sich die drei Züricher Musiker kennen, bleiben dann auch gleich aneinander hängen und hören nicht auf gemeinsam zu musizieren. Zum Glück. Denn irgendwie hat der scheinbar so beschaulichen Schweiz eine Band wie My Heart Belongs To Cecilia Winter gefehlt – vielleicht auch nur, um nach DJ Bobo der musikalischen Rehabilitation wieder ein Stück näher zu kommen. Der homogene Sound des Indie-Pop-Trios ist voll von authentischer Melancholie und Tiefe. Ihre grandiose Bühnen-Performance verzaubert mit einem Hauch von Magie und Glitzer. The three musicians from Zurich met at a theatre performance, immediately got along, and haven’t stopped making music together ever since. Fortunately. Because, somehow, the apparently tranquil Switzerland really was in need of a band like My Heart Belongs To Cecilia Winter – if only to get a little closer to its musical rehabilitation after DJ Bobo. The homogeneous sound of the indie pop trio is full of authentic melancholia and depth. Their grandiose live performance enchants the audience with a touch of magic and glitter.

N’toko (si) Miha Blažič, besser bekannt als N’toko, ist ein slowenischer Rapper, und zwar ein richtig guter. Zum einen gilt er als einer der wenigen bisher unbesiegten Freestyler der Hip-Hop-Szene seiner Heimat – sowohl in englischer als auch in slowenischer Sprache. Entsprechend ist er schon mehrere Male zum slowenischen Freestyle-Champion gekürt worden. Zum anderen ist Blažič besonders für seine gesellschaftskritischen Texte bekannt. Innerund außerhalb der Hip-Hop-Szene hat er es mit diesen bereits zu einiger Bekanntheit gebracht. Miha Blažič, better known as N’toko, is a Slovenian rapper, and a really good one at that. Firstly, he’s one of the few so far undefeated freestylers of his home country’s hip hop scene – in English as well as in Slovenian. He’s accordingly been Slovenian freestyle champion numerous times. Secondly, Blažič is particularly known for his socio-critical lyrics. And with those he’s already gained quite a reputa tion inside and outside the hip hop scene.

New Wave Syria (si) Ihre Herangehensweise sehen New Wave Syria eher in der Tradition des Rock ’n’ Roll als in jener elektonischer Musik. Das slowenische Duo setzt dabei auf verzerrte Sounds, die weder vor Beats, Gesang noch Melodien Halt machen, sowie auf den Kontrast von leisen und lauten Passagen. Umgesetzt wird das Ganze auf einer Reihe von Synthesizern, Drum-Machines und diversen anderen elektronischen Gadgets. Eingängiger Electro-Pop mit Hang zu DIYÄsthetik. New Wave Syria regard their musical approach in the tration of rock ’n’ roll rather than that of electronic music. The Slovenian duo banks on distorted sounds that don’t stop at beats, vocals, or melodies, as well as on the contrast between quiet and loud parts. All of this is performed on a number of synthesisers, drum machines, and various other electronic gadgets. Catchy electro pop with a tendency for DIY aesthetics.

Nežni Dalibor (rs) Nežni Dalibor fanden bereits 1995 als Schulband zusammen. Nach einer zweijährigen Pause sind sie seit Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends wieder vereint und in der so genannten Neuen Serbischen Szene aktiv. Bemerkenswert: Ihr Debüt „Sredstva i veštine“ wurde 2008 vom Webzine Popboks zum Album des Jahres gewählt. Mittlerweile ist „Normalan život“, das zweite Album der Band, erschienen. After taking a two-year break and reuniting at the beginning of the millennium, they are now active players of the so-called New Serbian Scene. Alternative rock with a classic guitar-bass-drums line-up and lyrics sung in Serbian.

Nowhere Train (at) Seit Jahren fährt der Nowhere Train dort vor, um Konzerte zu geben, wo man ihn lässt: in Fußgängerzonen und Schaufenstern, auf Bergbauernhöfen und Leuchttürmen, im Gefängnis und naturgemäß auch in Zügen. Begonnen hat alles 2009 auf einer elftägigen Zugreise durch Österreich. Damals waren die beteiligten Musiker – Mitglieder der Bands Naked Lunch, Play The Tracks Of, Love & Fist und A Life, A Song, A Cigarette sowie Ian Fisher – erst lose miteinander bekannt. Mittlerweile hat die Folk-Pop-Reisegruppe auch ihr erstes Album mit dem passenden Titel „Station“ veröffentlicht. For years, the Nowhere Train has been stopping off for concerts wherever they would let him: in pedestrian areas and shop windows, at mountain farms and lighthouses, at prisons and, of course, on trains. It all started in 2009 during an eleven-day long train journey through Austria. Back then, the participating musicians – members of the bands Naked Lunch, Play The Tracks Of, Love & Fist und A Life, A Song, A Cigarette as well as Ian Fisher – didn’t know each other too well. In the meantime, the folk pop tour party has released its first album with the fitting title “Station”.

Ola Horhe (rs) Mit den Klassikern aus der Analog-Synthie-Ära bewaffnet, setzen Ola Horhe auf warme, kosmische Klänge, um das Publikum einzulullen. Anfangs ein Projekt der beiden Belgrader Andy Pavlov und Nemanja Aćimović, ist die Band mittlerweile mit Sonja Lončar zum Trio angewachsen. Das musika lische Motto bleibt „weniger ist mehr“ und wird mit einfachen, repetitiven Schlagzeugrhythmen in Kombination mit Psy-Synth-Sounds und Vocals zu komplexen und abwechslungsreichen Klängen geformt. Armed with classics of the analogue-synth era, Ola Horhe go for warm, cosmic sounds in order to lull their audience. Initially a project of the two Belgraders Andy Pavlov and Nemanja Aćimović, the addition of Sonja Lončar has turned the band into a trio in the meantime. But the musical motto remains the same: less is more. Basic, repetitive drum rhythms combined with psy-synth sounds and vocals make for complex and diverse sounds.

Olympique (at) Die Newcomer-Band Olympique zeichnet sich vor allem durch eine intensive Grundstimmung und eine starke Performance aus, die sie bereits bei Konzerten in ganz Österreich unter Beweis stellen konnte. Aber auch die Melancholie kommt bei den jungen Salzburgern nicht zu kurz. Mit dem kraftvollen Sound ihres melodramatischen Indie-Rock konnten Olympique jedenfalls längst ihren eigenen Stil etablieren. The newcomer band Olympique is characterised especially by its intense general mood and a strong performance, which they’ve already demonstrated at concerts all over Austria. But the young guys from Salzburg also got plenty of melancholia to offer. With the vigorous sound of their melodramatic indie rock, Olympique have definitely established their own style.

Pink Studio (hr) Pink Studio stammen aus Kroatien und machen lupenreine Popmusik, zu der sie in ihrer Muttersprache singen. Und obwohl oder gerade weil sie bei ihren Auftritten oft mehr wie ein Haufen von Solokünstlern als wie eine Band wirken – alle sind sehr in sich gekehrt, irgendwie als befände sich jedes Bandmitglied in seiner eigenen kleinen Blase –, strahlen die Performances, ihr Sound und überhaupt ihr ganzes Auftreten eine gewisse Harmonie und Leichtigkeit aus. Pink Studio come from Croatia and make flawless pop music with lyrics in their mother tongue. The band’s been around since 2005 – at the moment as a seven-piece combo. And despite or maybe precisely because of the fact that their live gigs sometimes seem like that of a bunch of solo artists rather than of a band – they’re all very introvert, almost as if every band member is inside their own bubble –, their performances, their sound, and their entire appearance radiates a certain harmony and ease.

Popecitelji (rs) Im Jahr 1999 gründeten die beiden Brüder Saša und Goran Furunović in der serbischen Stadt Priština die Band Popečitelji. Wenig später ist Schlagzeuger Rade Vulić zu ihnen gestoßen. Gemeinsam entwickelten sie eine originelle Mischung aus instrumentalem Funk-Rock und Folk-Musik. Nach dem Ende der Bombenangriffe verließ die Band Priština und zog weiter nach Kragujevac und Kraljevo. Dort arbeiten sie seitdem an ihrem charakteristischen Sound und vergrößern nach und nach ihre Fangemeinde in ganz Serbien und jenseits der Grenzen ihres Heimatlandes. In 1999, the two brothers Saša and Goran Furunović formed the band Popečitelji in the Serbian city of Priština. Shortly after, drummer Rade Vulić joined them. Together, they developed a witty mix of instrumental funk rock and folk music. The band left Priština and moved on to Kragujevac and Kraljevo after the bombings stopped. They’ve since been working on their characteristic sound and have been increasing their fan base all over Serbia and beyond the borders of their home country.

Punda Omar (at) Ginge es nach Punda Omar, wären die Worte dieses Texts wohl genauso zur Unkenntlichkeit verfremdet wie die Vocals auf seiner Debüt-EP „Stetptc“, die Anfang des Jahres erschienen ist. Diese Vocals seien der „Star der Show“, attestierte der Blog Neighborhood Tapes. Und tatsächlich stellen sie neben den analog/digitalen Klangflächen und den auf das Minimum reduzierten Beats das Zentrum der Musik von Punda Omar dar. Rasch fand sich der Wiener auf den Playlists von This Kid Is A Problem, Amazing Beats sowie Byte.fm, aber auch von Radio FM4 wieder. If it was up to Punda Omar, the words of this text would probably be just as processed beyond recognition as the vocals on his debut EP “Stetptc”, which was released at the beginning of this year. According to the blog Neighborhood Tapes, those vocals are the “star of the show”. And, indeed, in addition to the analogue/digital soundscapes and the minimal beats, they are the core of Punda Omar’s music. The Viennese musician has quickly made in onto the playlists of This Kid Is A Problem, Amazing Beats, and Byte.fm, but also of Radio FM4.

Absolutely weird sounds of the next generation of down tempo house, a mix of sparkling disco with magical swing, full of secrets but nevertheless firmly optimistic – it’s difficut to describe this sound without digressing; far out into the universe. The Ringo Jets (tr) Diese türkische Band macht Rock ’n’ Roll, und das laut. Richtig laut. Zwei elektrische Gitarren, ein Schlagzeug und eine Menge Einflüsse von zeitlosen Rock-Größen wie Bo Diddley, The Sonics, The Who und The Stooges – alles sitzt, passt und hat Luft. Auf Bühnen in ganz Europa hat die Band schon gastiert, etwa beim Glimps Festival in Belgien oder beim Primavera Sound in Barcelona, um nur zwei Beispiele zu nennen. Ihr letztes Album wurde gemeinsam mit Tommaso Colliva (Muse, Franz Ferdinand) in Mailand produziert. This Turkish band makes rock ’n’ roll, the loud kind. Really loud. Two electric guitars, a drum kit, and lots of influences from timeless heroes such as Bo Diddley, The Sonics, The Who, and The Stooges – everything fits together perfectly. The band has already performed on stages all over Europe, for instance at the Glimps Festival in Belgium or Primavera Sound in Barcelona, to name but a few. Ritornell open up unforeseen music worlds by means of meticulous work, musical know-how, and compositional creativity. One of the most innovative acts of the capital.

Unter dem Pseudonym Roosevelt lädt er mit smoothen elektronischen Klängen einerseits zum Träumen ein, motiviert andererseits aber auch zum Feiern auf der Tanzfläche. Der in Köln lebende Musiker hat sich sowohl bei Pitchfork als auch beim Melt! Festival schon einige Freunde machen können und steht beim Label Greco-Roman unter Vertrag. No we don’t mean the 26th or the 32nd president of the United States but Marius Laube, the drummer of the German indie band Beat! Beat! Beat!. Under the alias Roosevelt, he knows how to make us dream with smooth, electronic sounds as well as to get us going on the dance floor. The Cologne-based musician has already made some friends at Pitchfork and at Melt! Festival and is signed to the label Greco-Roman.

Der Sound des deutsch-luxemburgischen Trios – eine Kombination aus tragenden Synthie-Flächen, satten Bässen und leicht melancholischem Gesang – erinnert an Fink, Miike Snow oder auch James Blake. Zusätzliche Symphathiepunkte verdienen sich Say Yes Dog durch ihr Vorhaben, jedes Konzert zu einem Fest der Freude, des Tanzes und der Glückseligkeit zu machen. Say Yes Dog make electro pop. And quite successfully so, as it turned out in the course of the festival summer. The sound of the German-Luxembourgian trio – a combination of a synth base, full bass, and slightly melancholic vocals – is reminiscent of Fink, Miike Snow, and James Blake. And Say Yes Dog earn some extra points for their intention to make every concert a celebration of joy, dance, and bliss.

Aber mit Namen scheinen es die vier Herren ohnehin zu haben: Master T, Buffalo Perfect, Romero III. und The Russian nennen sie sich selbst. Und nach welchem feuchten Traum sie ihre Band getauft haben, das wissen wir ja bereits. Krautrock and noise rock with prog references – the main point is: defying conventional song structures. the band goes at it with vigour and a contagious energy. Sin Fang (is) Sin Fang ist das Soloprojekt des isländischen Songwriter-Wunderkinds und Independent-Musikers Sindri Már Sigfússon. Ist er als Gründer und Mastermind der Band Seabear eher folkigerer Musik zugetan, so konzentriert er sich mit Sin Fang auf experimentellere Sounds. Dementsprechend schwierig einzuordnen ist auch sein drittes Album „Flowers“: im schüchternen Indie verwurzelt und trotzdem teils wuchtig und laut. Während das Album stellenweise zum enthusiastischen Mitsingen einlädt, stehen einem bei anderen Songs die Tränen in den Augen. Sin Fang is the solo project of the Icelandic songwriter wunderkind and independent musician Sindri Már Sigfússon. Devoted to folky music as the founder and mastermind of the band Seabear, he rather focuses on experimental sounds with Sin Fang. It’s thus difficult to classify his third album “Flowers”: rooted in shy indie music but still partly forceful and loud. At times, the album enthusiastically invites you to sing along, while some songs bring tears to your eyes.

Skream feat. Sgt. Pokes (uk) Schon als Teenager produzierte Oliver Dene Jones aka Skream – mit der Playstation – seine ersten Tracks. Das nötige musikalische Know-how eignete er sich während der Arbeit im Plattenladen Big Apple Records im Süden Londons an. Wenig später hob er mit Freunden und Musikern wie Benga, mit dem er auch die Supergroup Magnetic Man betreibt, das Genre Dubstep aus der Taufe und avancierte zum internationalen Star. Mittlerweile ist Skream bei Garage House und Oldschool-Disco angekommen und drückt auch diesem Sound-Mix seinen Stempel auf. Oliver Dene Jones aka Skream produced his first tracks already as a teenager – with the play station. He acquired the necessary music know-how while working at the record store Big Apple Records in South London. Soon after, he initiated the genre dubstep together with friends and musicians such as Benga, with whom he also founded the supergroup Magnetic Man, and rose to international fame. In the meantime, Skream has arrived at garage house and old-school disco and puts his mark on this sound mix as well.

Slut (de) In ihrem fast 20-jährigen Bestehen haben Slut so einiges ausprobiert und erreicht. Abgesehen davon, dass diesen Sommer mit „Alienation“ bereits ihr siebtes Album veröffentlicht worden ist, haben sie etwa an einer Interpretation der „Dreigroschenoper“ mitgewirkt und sind gemeinsam mit der Autorin Juli Zeh auf „Schallnovellentour“ gegangen. Auch im Sound der fünfköpfigen Band spiegeln sich Experimentierfreude und Aufgeschlossenheit wider, wobei raue, gitarrenlastige Songs mit ausgefeilten Melodien und ein wunderbar melancholischer Gesang den Grundton vorgeben. In their almost 20 years of existence, Slut have tried out and achieved quite a few things. In addition to having released their seventh album, “Alienation”, this summer, they’ve also contributed to an interpretation of “The Threepenny Opera” and have been on tour with the author Juli Zeh. The sound of the five-piece, too, reflects their eagerness to experiment and their open-mindedness, with rough, guitar-heavy songs full of elaborate melodies and beautifully melancholic vocals set the tone.

Sohn (uk) Sicherlich eines der musikalischen Highlights des laufenden Jahres. Auch wenn Sohn kaum Informationen über sich preisgegeben hat – die Musik des in Wien lebenden Engländers hat sich wie ein Lauffeuer im Netz verbreitet. Nach seinem Auftritt beim Showcase-Festival Eurosonic und dem Vertragsabschluss mit 4AD spielt Sohn längst auf den großen Bühnen Europas. Umhüllt von reduzierter Elektronik führt er mit sanfter Stimme zurück zum Wesentlichen. Wie der Musiker eigentlich heißt oder was er früher gemacht hat, interessiert in diesem Moment keinen mehr. Definitely one of the music highlights of the year. Despite the fact that Sohn hasn’t revealed much about himself – the music of the Vienna-based Englishman went viral on the internet. After his performance at the showcase festival Eurosonic and the record deal with 4AD, Sohn is already conquering the big stages of Europe. Surrounded by reduced electronic music, his tender voice leads us back to the bare essentials. At that point, no one cares about the musician’s real name or what he did before Sohn.

Und auch „Enfant Terrible“, das Debütalbum der Indie-Rocker, ist ein multinationales Projekt geworden: produziert in Ljubljana, London und Helsinki. Mit ihm feierte die Band erste Erfolge und teilte sich so manche Konzertbühne mit Genregrößen wie den Kooks, den Subways, den Editors und den Wombats. Beim ungarischen Sziget Festival sind The Toronto Drug Bust ebenfalls schon aufgetreten. Initially a Slovenian-Canadian act – hence the name – The Toronto Drug Bust now consist of Slovenian and Finnish musicians. The Touch (se) Im Herbst 2006 fanden Olov Andersson, Lina Öhman, Andreas Bygdell und Johan Wahlberg in der Göteborger Clubszene zusammen und gründeten die Band The Touch. Seitdem haben sich die vier, stets stylisch gekleideten Musiker mit dem kryptischen Band-Logo ganz der Elektronik verschrieben. Ihr dezent dystopisch gestimmter Sound übernimmt Elemente aus Techno, House und verträumter Electronica, ist zwingend und individuell und hat der Band bereits einen Vertrag beim renommierten französischen Label Kitsuné eingebracht. In autumn 2006, Olov Andersson, Lina Öhman, Andreas Bygdell, and Johan Wahlberg met in Gothenburg’s club scene and formed the band The Touch. Trains Of Thoughts (at) Auf einen gedanklichen Streifzug durch die Welt des Untergrunds – der U-Bahn – nimmt einen „Trains Of Thoughts“ von Regisseur Timo Novotny mit. Der essayistische Dokumentarfilm ist auf mehreren Ebenen ein Genuss: beeindruckende Bilder von Metropolen, unterlegt mit den eindringlichen Klängen der Sofa Surfers. Gedankenfetzen, Bilder, Menschenmassen, Sätze, Lichter und Schicksale ziehen vorbei, dahinter die Großstadt. Im Rahmen von Waves Vienna wird „Trains Of Thoughts“ mit Projektionen und Live-Sounds zum Konzerterlebnis ausgebaut. “Train Of Thoughts” by the director Timo Novotny takes you on a ramble through the world of the underground. The essayistic documentary is a real treat on various levels: impressive pictures of big cities accompanied by the powerful sounds of the Sofa Surfers. Snippets of thoughts, images, crowds of people, sentences, lights, and fates drift by, in the background the metropolis. At Waves Vienna, “Trains Of Thought” will be transformed into a concert experience with projections and live sounds.

Velojet (at) Die bislang dreifach für den Amadeus Award nominierte Band steht nicht nur für Indie-Pop vom Feinsten, sondern zählt auch zu den etabliertesten Acts des Landes. Bei Velojet lassen sich die eingängigen Gesangsmelodien sowohl von satten Gitarren-Sounds als auch von wunderschönen Keyboard-Flächen tragen, um zur Krönung nicht selten in einem fantastischen Tutti mit orchestralem Charakter zu münden. Mit Album Nummer vier im Gepäck – es heißt „Panorama“ und wird im Zuge von Waves Vienna präsentiert – gibt es jede Menge Neues zu hören. Einen Schuss Psychedelik zum Beispiel. Gänsehaut ist jedenfalls garantiert. This three-time Amadeus Award nominee doesn’t only represent indie pop at its finest, but also is one of the most established acts of the country. Velojet’s catchy vocal melodies are carried by lush guitars as well as beautiful keyboard sounds and frequently end in a fantastic tutti with an orchestral character. There’s lots of new stuff to look forward to on album number four, “Panorama”, which the band will present at Waves Vienna. A dash of psychedelic, for instance. Goosebumps are guaranteed, in any case.

Velvet Two Stripes (ch) Sankt Gallen ist ihre Heimatstadt, räudiger Rock mit Blues-Einschlag das Metier dieser drei Youngsters. Wer jetzt automatisch an eine Gruppe von Rotzbuben denkt, liegt aber falsch. Velvet Two Stripes sind nämlich eine reine Frauen-Band. Franca Mock, Sara und Sophie Diggelmann, so heißen deren Mitglieder, hebeln Vorurteile aus und geben statt der braven Mädchen die selbstbewussten und gleichzeitig geheimnisvollen Rock-Gören. Fast könnte man meinen, Alison Mosshart (The Kills) habe drei jüngere Schwestern in der Schweiz … St. Gall is the hometown and rough rock with blues elements is the metier of these three youngsters. But if you’re thinking of a group of snotty-nosed lads, you’re wrong. Because Velvet Two Stripes are an all-female band. Franca Mock, Sara Diggelmann, and Sophie Diggelmann – these are the names of the members – defy preconceptions and show off their confident as well as mysterious rock brats attitude instead of behaving like good girls. You’d almost think Alison Mosshart (The Kills) has three younger sisters in Switzerland…

Mika Vember (at) 2006 startete die Wiener Singer-Songwriterin Mika Vember ihr Soloprojekt. Bald sollte Martina Winkler dazustoßen, um wunderbare Farbtupfer mit ihrem Akkordeon zu setzen. Den aufgeweckten Herzschlag besorgt seit 2011 Jörg Mikula am Schlagzeug, und als im Jahr darauf dann auch noch Bassist, Gitarrist und Musikproduzent Kristian Musser zur Band stieß, war’s endgültig vorbei mit der One-Woman-Show – die Band Mika Vember ward geboren. Und sie verwöhnt uns mit geradezu hymnischem Folk-Pop. The Viennese singer-songwriter Mika Vember started her solo project in 2006. Soon after, Martina Winkler joined her to add some wonderful dashes of colour with her accordion. Since 2011, Jörg Mikula is responsible for the lively heartbeat, and once bass player, guitarist, and producer Kristian Musser joined a year later, the one-woman show was over for good. The band Mika Vember was born. And it spoils us with virtually hymnal folk pop.

Vortex Rex (at) Vortex Rex existieren als personell sehr flexibles Gefüge, in dessen Zentrum Ilias Dahimène, der Betreiber des Labels Seayou Records, steht. Vor allem von den ästhetischen Welten des Rock und des Hip-Hop inspiriert, versucht die Wiener Band genau diese in eine postmoderne Musiklandschaft zu integrieren. Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2005 haben Vortex Rex bereits für Bands wie Gossip oder Japanther den Support gegeben und einige Headliner-Touren durch Europa bestritten. Unter freudigem Beifall der Medien, aber auch des Publikums – wissen Vortex Rex doch vor allem auch, wie man richtig Party macht. As far as its line-up is concerned, Vortex Rex are a very flexible combo with Ilias Dahimène, the owner of the label Seayou Records, at its core. Inspired primarily by the aesthetic worlds of rock and hip hop, the Viennese band tries to integrate exactly these into a postmodern music landscape. Ever since its formation in 2005, the band has supported bands such as Gossip or Japanther and has headlined a number of tours throughout Europe. And both the press and the audience applauded them – after all, Vortex Rex know how to get a party going.

Wandl (at) Hinter dem Namen Wandl steckt ein elektronisches Ein-Mann-Projekt, von dem man noch viel hören dürfte. Der aus St. Pölten stammende SoundBastler kombiniert von Soul inspirierte Vocals mit abstrakten Hip-HopBeats und Chill-Wave-Klangwelten. Live werden dazu stimmungsvolle Visuals gereicht. Flying Lotus und James Blake zählen zweifelsfrei zu den Bezugspunkten dieser Musik – ohne dabei ihre Eigenständigkeit übermäßig zu beeinträchtigen. Wandl is the name of an electronic one-man project you’ll definitely hear more of in the future. The sound tinkerer from Lower Austria combines soul-inspired vocals with abstract hip hop beats and chill wave soundscapes; served with atmospheric visuals at live gigs. Flying Lotus and James Blake are definitely reference points for this music – without losing its autonomy.

We Walk Walls (at) We Walk Walls, das sind drei junge Männer und eine junge Frau, deren Musik sich irgendwo zwischen New Wave, Indie- und Dream-Pop verorten lässt. Der von erhaben bis schwermütig reichende Gesang – teils von Patricia Ziegler, teils von Silvio Haselhof vorgetragen – und die magischen Hooklines entführen das Publikum in eine ganz eigene Welt. Verziert von Electro- und Synthie-Elementen rollt „Ceremonies“, das Debütalbum der Band, eine geräuschgespickte, verträumte Indie-Pop-Landschaft mit Kitschabgründen aus. We Walk Walls, that’s three young men and one young woman whose music oscillates between new wave, indie pop, and dream pop. The vocals ranging from sublime to mournful – rendered, at times, by Patricia Ziegler, at times by Silvio Haselhof – and the magical hook lines carry the audience off into a very special world. Adorned with electro and synth elements, “Ceremonies”, the band’s debut album, serves up dreamy indie pop rich in sound and not afraid of kitsch.

Werefox (si) Verschlagen und räudig, vornehm und reizvoll – all diese Eigenschaften vereinen Werefox aus Slowenien in sich. Zu den druckvollen Klängen der Rhythmusabteilung singt Frontfrau Melée mit einer Stimme, der man die Rockröhre ebenso abnimmt wie die unschuldige Verführerin. Zwischendurch häult ein Gitarrensolo den Mond an. Müsste man Werefox einem Genre zuordnen, so wäre das eindeutig der Alternative Rock – in seiner rescheren Ausprägung. Sly and rough, noble and tempting – Werefox from Slovenia incorporate all these characteristics. Front woman Melée sings to the forceful sounds of the rhythm section with the voice of both a real rocker and an innocent seductress. Every now and then, a guitar solo howls at the moon. If one had to assign Werefox a genre, it’d definitely be alternative rock – at its heftiest.

The Who The What The Yeah (at) Klare Ansagen in Wort und Klang macht die Wiener Indie-Rock-Band mit dem lustigen Kürzel TWTWTY. Mit pointiertem Protestgeschrei und rockigen Klängen geht es mal im knallharten Four-on-the-floor-Modus, mal über atmosphärische Klangflächen dahin. So oder so: Im Zusammenspiel erlangen Text und Musik eine mächtige Aussagekraft, die mit dem Finger auf einen zeigt. Mit welcher Intention? Das soll jeder für sich entscheiden. Die Musik eignet sich jedenfalls zum Rocken in den vorderen Reihen ebenso wie zum Sinnieren in den hinteren. The Viennese indie rock band with the funny abbreviation TWTWTY make clear statements in word and sound. With trenchant howls of protest and rocky tunes, they confront us at times with a brutal four-on-the-flour pattern, at others with atmospheric soundscapes. Either way: in interaction, lyrics and music obtain a powerful significance which points its finger at you. With what intention? Everybody should decide for themselves. In any case, it’s the right kind of music to rock out in the front rows or to ponder at the back.

Yast (se) Traumhaft im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: Yast stehen für schwedischen Dream-Pop mit Post-Rock-Elementen. Satte Fender- und Gretsch-Gitarren werden im Federhall oder in der Rückkopplung ertränkt, während das Schlagzeug den forcierenden Puls liefert. Die aus Malmö stammende fünfköpfige Band erzeugt mit ihren weiten Klängen und vernebelten Vocals einerseits die Sehnsucht nach dem Aufbruch in die Ferne und andererseits die Rückkehr zur Jugendliebe. Ob hart und laut oder sanft und ruhig – dieser Schweden-Export bekommt definitiv das Prädikat wertvoll. Dreamlike in the true sense of the word: Yast stand for Swedish dream pop with post rock elements. Full Fender or Gretsch guitars drown in reverberations or in the feedback while the drum beats its propelling pulse. With their broad sound and foggy vocals, the five-piece band from Malmö arouses a longing to set out on a journey, on the one hand, and to return to your first love, on the other. Whether rough and loud or tender and calm – this Swedish export definitely deserves some praise.

Yuri Landman Ensemble (nl) Die E-Gitarre zählt wohl zu einem der beliebtesten Instrumente des 21. Jahrhunderts. Jeder nur erdenkliche Klang wurde auf ihr gespielt, alles, was folgt, kann nur noch Wiederholung sein. Oder doch nicht? Seit 2001 baut der Niederländer Yuri Landman neue, so bislang nicht existente Saiteninstrumente mit sprechenden Namen wie Moodswinger oder Springtime. Die Liste seiner prominenten Kunden reicht dabei von Deus bis Sonic Youth. Den Post-Gitarren-Sound des nach ihm benannten Ensembles lässt Landman nun in geballter Form durch Wien dröhnen. The electronic guitar is probably one of the most popular instruments of the 21st century. Every conceivable sound has been played on it, everything that follows can only be a repeti tion. Right? The Dutchman Yuri Landman has been building new, previously unseen string instruments with expressive names such as Moodswinger or Springtime since 2001. The list of his prominent customers ranges from Deus to Sonic Youth. Now Landman lets the post-guitar sound of his eponymous ensemble blast through Vienna at full force.

zanshin (dJ-set) (at) Zanshin ist mehr ein Konzept als ein Name. Seine Wurzeln hat dieses im asiatischen Kampfsport, der Begriff beschreibt dort einen Zustand erhöhter Konzentration. So klingt auch die Musik Zanshins wie eine Anspielung auf eine Art Wachsamkeit, auf die Fähigkeit, auf jede mögliche Situation zu reagieren – physisch wie psychisch. Seine dichten Verstrickungen von Synthie-Sounds, Beats und Gesangsfetzen klingen jedenfalls, als würde ihre Programmierung und erst recht ihre Live-Manipulation äußerst schnelle Reflexe erfordern. Zahnshin is a concept rather than a name. Its roots are found in asian martial arts, where the term describes a state of increased concentration. Zanshin’s music, too, hints at a certain alertness, at the ability to react to any given situation – psychologically as well as physically. his dense web of synth sounds, beats, and snippets of vocals in any case sound as if their programming, and their live manipulation even more so, require extremely quick refl exes.

After two successful years in Vienna, the club and showcase festival Waves is expanding to also include Bratislava. In seven venues and on nine stages, Waves Bratislava will present more than 40 local and international DJ and live acts. “East Meets West” has been Waves’ motto from its very beginning. With the original event in Vienna and the new one in Bratislava, Waves is trying to establish a Twin City music festival in the heart of Europe showcasing established artists as well as new talents.

Telekom stage @ Old Market Hall 01 Situated in the centre of Bratislava, the building of Old Market Hall – which will be used as a flagship of Waves Bratislava – has an over 100-year history. However, it has been almost inaccessible to the public for years. This is now changing. A group of cultural professionals formed a civic organisation dedicated to the revitalisation of the building, which is slowly becoming the biggest meeting space and cultural centre in the Old Town of Bratislava, offering a variety of events, markets, and public services. The Telekom Stage at the Old Market Hall is the biggest venue of the festival and will host local as well as international live acts.

Dirty electro house with slightly mean pop vocals, presented in thrilling live performances – the three Austrians of A. G. Trio conquer charts, festivals, and dancefloors with their very special mix. International stars such as Groove Armada or The Crystal Method play their tracks in their DJ sets. After the first joint gig of the three originally independently working producers in Novi Sad, Serbia, the improvised live act gradually evolved into a really exciting studio act.

B-complex is the drum & bass project of Maťo Lenický, one of the most successful Slovakian artists beyond the borders of his home country. He sold out concerts in New Zealand, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, England, and the USA, among others. He owes his success to his hit “Beautiful Lies”, which got released by the influential UK label Hospital Records.

For Juraj Marikovič, one successful band is not enough. Besides playing in the band Para, he formed the trio Bad Karma Boy together with Adela Tihlariková and Peter Hrabě. Their just released debut album features songs sung in Slovak and is characterized by a very special atmosphere due to Markovič’s singing.

Formed in Utrecht eight years ago, the Dutch band committed itself to the revival of the great rock era of the 60s and 70s. The rather unusual three-piece live setup – without bass but with an electronic organ instead – already hints at a certain affinity for The Doors. Hard drums, distorted guitars, and rough vocals make sparks fly. But it’s the mix of psychedelic rock, blues rock, rock ’n’ roll, and boogie woogie that distinguishes this act, that awakens much more than just nostalgia.

BRNS come from those foggy nooks and alleys that connect Brussels’ magnificent medieval buildings to the hectic veins of postmodernism. This fragile but brave simultaneity of the pursuit of new horizons and the nostalgic romanticism also characterises the hypnotic, experimental sound of the young indie band. The musicians share a love for complex and mystic playfulness – nevertheless, the foursome surprises us with catchy, organic melodies.

The multi-instrumentalist Tobiasz Biliński is one of the most promising indie acts of Poland. The Warsawbased musician and former drummer of the band Kyst has decided to dedicate himself to his passion for pop. The result is the solo project Coldair, with which Biliński has already been performing at many renowned festivals – at times on his own, at times with a handful of other musicians, as circumstances would have it. The music sounds free, as if it had no regards for rules. But despite its lightness, it keeps the tension.

Thanks to its unconventional combination of drums, Rhodes piano, and turn tables, this trio from Israel is considered a bit of a sensation in the groove scene of its home country. The influences range from funk and Afrobeat to dub to jazz, rhythm & blues, and even drum & bass. But the most important thing: Crunch 22 manage to turn every one of their gigs into a proper party. With Erez Todres of the band The Apples on the turntables, they have become a frequently booked act at international festivals.

Damolh 33 is a Slovak producer duo with an interest in minimal and experimental techno. The Bernáth brothers are successfully translating their passion for techno and ambient into their productions, which are regularly played by heavy weights such as Richie Hawtin.

DYNAMO team (SK)

Diego, formed in 2004, is one of the most popular underground indie rock acts in Slovakia. Until today, they’ve released two successful albums. The band has also been able to support international acts such as Editors, Zita Swoon, or Taxi To The Ocean. Diego are currently rehearsing for a tour in autumn in which they will present new songs from their upcoming third album. Waves Bratislava will be one of the first occasions to hear the new material.

Dynamo Team released their debut album “Slavia” in 2011. The single “Roll The Dynamo” was played frequently on Austria’s Radio FM4. The band was awarded the Newcomer Of The Year Award at the Radio_Head Awards and has played festivals in Austria, Belgium, and France. Their song “OK Let’s Go” is currently featured in Hyundai TV commercials in America.

The Slovak band Ear Drum Kru has been active in the field of electronic music since 1996. They do live concerts as well as DJ sets. Apart from producing their own songs, they also work on remixes. Dubstep, drum & bass, breakbeat, dub, triphop, electro – Ear Drum Kru offer a mixture of lots of different things.

Fallgrapp is an electro-acoustic project of the young musician Juraj Líška. It is a combination of electronica with vocals, tinged with violins and drums. The project was formed in 2013 after winning the producing competition Fatt Kools with the song “Ľadový útes”, which was also used in an advertising campaign for Unicef in Slovakia.

Róbert Monček, guitarist of the band Talkshow, and Pavol Kulich started their collaboration in 2011. Jam sessions gradually turned into songwriting sessions and eventually led to the EP “87 Bears”. Apart from standard musical instruments, they also use unconventional ones: beer cans, keys, beatbox. Fat Kit is young Slovak electronica at its best.

The Slovak band Feelme is not a conventional group. Their concert set-list includes more than 21 movie themes – such as those of “Knight Rider”, James Bond, or “Pulp Fiction”, among others. Although all of the melodies are well known, the band adapts them into new versions influenced by metal, funk, and fusion. Fun guaranteed!

The beat-maker Foolk is a master of creative sampling. His music is a colourful trip to a world of slicedup irregular drums, glitchtronica, and impressive soundscapes. His style is closest to abstract hip-hop, glitch-hop, or wonky. This year, he released the album “Millions Of”.

During a gig in Vienna, the Brit Tim Simenon – mastermind behind Bomb The Bass – meets drummer Roman Lugmayr and keyboard player Georg Lichtenauer. The three immediately get along so well that Simenon even moves to Austria. Together with the congenial singer Laura Gomez they develop the project Ghost Capsules, which, according to their self-description, devotes itself to music for the night: “Dark chocolate electro, if you like, shot through with a dash of espresso, a twist of chili even.”

The Global Optimistic are two electronic producers named GLGN and Jimmy Pé, who run their own label Gergaz. Their long awaited debut album “Moon Trees” took three years to make. One of their biggest successes was playing Sziget Festival four (!) times in a row.

The Slovak punk rockers Got Blue Balls have only been around for a while, but they already accomplished to build a decent following. In June 2011, they released their eponymous album “Got Blue Balls” as a free download. The band’s concerts are always energetic, wild, and loud.

Toni Granko is a representative of the Slovak downtempo scene. In his music productions he combines software sounds with a guitar, piano, and vocals. As a composer, he started with a project named Tea Peak. Now, his tracks are defined by soft ambient pop full of deep sentiment.

The debut album “In This Position” and the EP “Sitzfleisch!” illustrate Herzog Herzog’s attention to detail and talent for blending impossible samples and textures. This act offers one of the most exciting sounds to come out of Bratislava’s current music scene as well as really expressive live performances.

Hardly anyone in Slovakia makes better post rock and shoegaze than The Ills. Their songs lack vocals, but they are still striking. They’ve released two albums – “To Wish Impossible Things” and “Splendor”. The band avoids a stereotypical sound, their songs convey a unique atmosphere, and their live concerts are always a great experience.

Ink Midget is a Slovak electronic music producer. His sound is mainly influenced by bass music, but he enriches it using acoustic instruments, field recordings, nostalgic melodies, and odd noises and structures. In 2012, he released his debut album called “Re-Leave” on the Bratislava-based label Exitab.

Although Pino Ungvölgyi is a permanent member of the band Puding Pani Elvisovej, he is also a successful solo artist – under the name Kasioboy. The project, which had been on hold for some time, has come back to life at the beginning of 2013 with the release of the critically acclaimed album “Timeline Error”. At concerts, Kasioboy performs with a three piece line-up.

Katarzia only started to play guitar in 2012! She writes her own folk-rap songs in Slovak that reflect the life of a young woman wandering the world and finding herself in the third millennium. The young lady caused quite a stir lately when she appeared in the local scene out of the blue. Nevermind the language barrier and check it out!

In his music, we can feel the influence of dubstep, electronica, ambient, and drum & bass. His experimental productions are inspired by producers such as Lorn, Bonobo, Alixe Perez, Sabre, Dbridge, and many others. His music has been released on labels such as Syndrome Audio, Citrus Recordings, and FKZ:LTD.

The indie pop band Lavagance released their first EP “Back To Attraction” in 2006. Since than, they recorded four albums, with “Orthodox Experience” being the Album Of The Year 2007. They collaborated with Eddie Stevens on their album “I Like This Temper” and are currently working on a new record.

Jack Colleran aka Mmoths is one of the most promising acts of the year. The Irish electronic musician has been working on a unique mix of chill wave, future bass, and electronica since 2010. The result: diverse, catchy, and – above all – innovative tracks which are causing quite a stir far beyond the boarders of his home country. In April 2012, Mmoths played a celebrated gig at the SXSW festival in Texas and soon after supported acts such as At The Drive-in or Aphex Twin. A musician you’ll be hearing more of in the future.

Formerly known as The Uniques, this act is a Slovak indie pop trio that draws on the best elements of the genre throughout the decades, but that, at the same time, embraces the future. Nvmeri’s music is full of mathematical beats and catchy melodies inspired by Scandinavian indie pop. They’re blending the unpredictability and magnificence of 70s pop music, spicing it up with rich noisy synth pads and classical orchestrations.

Only a few Slovak bands perform such energetic, explosive concerts as Para. Graced by the enthusiastic following of their fans, who usually turn their gigs into great parties, Para always put in one hell of a show. Even though they have many hits under their belt, they’re still able to surprise their fans; and their latest album “Menšina” proofs that. It is pure positive energy combined with great music.

Jimmy Pé refers to himself as a creative explorer of broken beats. With his vision of cut-up electronica, he is slowly but surely on the way up. His productions frequently lead him to new territories, but, at the same time, he’s starting to establish his signature sound. Often drifting towards melancholy, he undoubtedly finds the right point of return and saves you from the dark with a healthy dose of euphoria.

Pjoni is one of the most outstanding recent musicians of the Slovak music scene. That became even more apparent after the release of his electro-acoustic debut album “Cloud No Raisins” last year, followed by the double A-side “Days Over / Night On” in collaboration with his fellow producer Stroon.

Always inspired by different directions of today’s quality electronic music, Mike Polarny expresses deep emotions in his own releases and DJ sets. His performances are exciting journeys, both for dancefloors and downtempo occasions. As a music supervisor and an event specialist, he has been providing services to business and culture including brands like T-Mobile, Sheraton, Sony, Quiksilver, British Council, Electronic Beats, or Smirnoff Experience.

This band serves up an energetic musical cocktail: a charming mix of Jewish, Balkan, and Oriental music complemented by Slovak and Gipsy folk elements – all combined with a unique tinge of contemporary styles. The Preßburger Klezmer Band is a well-established act in the European World music scene.

The Slovak music stars Puding Pani Elvisovej always give the audience a perfect concert experience; and their studio recordings are just as amazing. They have released three albums full of hits, which makes them one of the best acts the Slovak alternative pop scene has to offer. Energy and wit are their distinguishing features.

Purist is a young Slovak indie pop band. Their debut EP “Purist” was released in summer 2012. The band was nominated as the Newcomer Of The Year 2012 at the Radio_Head Awards and already performed at festivals such as Electronic Beats, Open’er, Pohoda, and Grape. Their debut album is due to be released in spring 2014.

Say Yes Dog make electro pop. And quite successfully so, as it turned out in the course of the festival summer. The sound of the GermanLuxembourgian trio – a combination of a synth base, full bass, and slightly melancholic vocals – is reminiscent of Fink, Miike Snow, and James Blake. And Say Yes Dog earn some extra points for their intention to make every concert a celebration of joy, dance, and bliss.

Walter Schnitzelsson is a young trio that recently broke through in Slovakia and even got nominated for the Newcomer Of The Year at the Radio_Head Awards. The guys, influenced by good old rock ’n’ roll, blues, classic punk, and contemporary indie, perform great live shows full of spontaneity and with a big dose of sincerity.

Tomáš Sloboda, the leader of the band Sounds Like This, has already made a strong mark on the Slovak scene with his previous band Le Payaco. Following a love for sounds of the 60s and the 70s, Sloboda successfully blends influences from the past with the guitar rock of the 90s and transports them well into the present. No matter whether he sings in Slovak or English, you’re gonna find yourself hooked. The recent album “Chobotnica” received The Album Of The Year Award at the prestigious Radio_Head Awards.

Stroon is a Slovak electronic producer with a background in classical music. In his live performances, he successfully merges the organic sound of the vibraphone with electronica. Stroon’s sound consists of landscape-synths, minimalistic patterns, urban night atmosphere, and melancholic vibes. Boris Vitázek aka Stix is a multimedia artist from Slovakia, often working with live visuals that revolve around gamelike environments.

The band from central Slovakia made their debut back in 2007. Last year, they released a new album simply called “Swan Bride”, which reflected new influences in their sound and, indisputably, lifted the band at least one level above the competition. They already supported Foals and Marilyn Manson.

The Slovak indie rock band Talkshow was founded in 2008. Their debut album is one of the best Slovak indie records. They have already played at festivals such as Rock For People, Colours Of Ostrava, On The Rocks, Pohoda, and many more. They will present their new album at Waves Bratislava.

This electronic duo is dedicated to an empirical approach to music, sound design, and visual imagination. The sound of Triple Sun is characterised by organic synthesiser sounds layered in orchestral fashion, minimalist vocals, and a cinematic mood full of drive, psychedelia, and freedom.

Trustme is the alter ego of Peter Strakoš, who is also known as DJ Hu. The new identity is opening a door to an exploration of Hu’s affinity for technoid dubstep with a hint of drum & bass soundscapes, often featuring strong melodic hooks. Complemented by the vocals by Tina Blondžez, there’s a serious hit potential boiling under the surface.

The rapper Vec (Thing) is known across different music genres. His productions feature intelligent lyrics for a mature audience, but also include catchy radio hits. He will perform with one of the best Slovak drummers, Martin Valihora. Martin, thanks to his scholarship at the Berklee College Of Music in Boston, has also established himself as part of New York’s jazz scene. In parts improvisation, in parts planned concept, scratching, and freestyle rap by Vec himself – definitely one of the highlights of Waves Bratislava.
