KNOWLEDGE 4
In the forty-ninth year ofpublication, the Wayland Pillars has recorded many changes both in the world and the Wayland community. The production of the yearbook is meant to capture moments in time, the history of the people, for the enjoyment of those who made those moments and for those yet to come. Wayland is a school steeped in tradition, dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the development ofcharacter. Knowledge and Character is the theme of the fortyninth volumn of Pillars. It is time for you, the reader, to take a trip through the pages of the 1993 yearbook. Enjoy!

It's certainly been a turbulent four years. I feel I've matured every step of the way. Fortunately, I've been lucky enough to have had people who cared about me. Thanks to my parents, my friends, and Mr. Seighman, I was able to begin to tap my potential for success. I've grown so much over four years with improvement as one of my few constants. This bodes well for me in the future because like Erik B. and Rakim said, "It ain't where you 're from, it 's where you're at."

Everyone says peaches are good. You bite it. MMmmm . Tastes good. You take another bite. Boy! Do you like peaches. After a while, the peach tastes mundane. There's nothing to it. The peach was an experience. The experience is over. Done. Now, everyone says apples are good. - Jodi Conlan.

1906. Wayland has the distinctions of being one of the first chapters in the Midwest and of being the first chapter to admit a woman to the national membership rolls. "Aca-Dec" You've seen the signs and heard the announcements about it,
but have you ever wondered just what it was or what it involved? "Aca-Dec" is short for Academic Decathalon Team. It is comprised of nine junior and senior members - three with a G.P.A. of 3. 75, three with 3.00-3. 74, three with 2.99 all split into three equal groups. Team members begin preparing for competition with other schools over the summer months, with competition beginning in mid November. At the first meet team members take six multiple choice tests on: English, Fine Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, and Economics. Awards then are given to both high scoring individuals and schools. At the next Regional Level of competition, team members not only take the six tests but they also must prepare a four minute speech. They have at the same time an important speech, an interview, and an essay competition. Again, awards go to both individuals and schools. The next stage is the State Competition, and then finally the National Finals. -Lisa Middleton. Katie Humleker, Nicole Brandrup, Celenda Wagenknecht, and Mam Hayashi are energetic and vocal in their supporting of the team.
The 1992 season was a tough one for the Wayland Field Hockey team. Although we scored only one goal the entire season, we played very well against teams who have had many years of experience compared to us. Through it all, we played hard, improved a lot, and learned to work as a team. Also, since we're only losing one senior, hopefully we'll all be back next year and improve even more.

In the '92' season of boys' soccer there were ups and downs. As we started the season we knew we were not going to be very strong at all. But we were out there for the love of the game. A substantial loss was brought to the team when David Martin went out with a hurt knee not even having played the first game. But the team rallied together and played better and better as the season progressed. Over all we didn't have that bad of a season considering the age and experience of most of the players. I felt that all of the seniors did extremely well in practice and also in the games. Both coaches did an excellent job and on behalf of the team I would like to thank them for their patience and support for the whole team no matter what the situation. Neill Mullett The Varsity soccer team was young and enthusiastic. There were citizens from Japan, Korea, Mexico, Germany, Thailand, and Pakistan as well as epresentatives from the states of Michigan, Illinois, Tex as, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin on the team. The game experience gained by members of the team will be of •reat help to nex t year's team. Captains for this year were Curtis Low, David Martin, Neil Mullett. The most valuable player was Neil Mullett and the most improved •layer was Sam Kim. "I enjoyed this team as much as any that I have coached in the past twenty years. They were a great group of individuals. Thanks for a good effort!" -Mr. Cobb

But with big improvements from Kyle Henderson and Opie, we qualified for state and ended up doing O.K. We also got big contributions from Pat Beighley and Langdon -Seth BeersHutchinson. As a whole for the ski team, both boys and girls had a great season. Both teams were struggling in the beginning, but luckily pulled through. Boys' Ski Team
The boys' ski team did an excellent job again this year. We did not have the depth that we have had in past years so it was very important for our 1st form skiers to stay upon their skis. They did and as a result they once again qualified for conference and state meets. As coaches, we were very pleased with the progress of the whole team and see several good young prospects for next year. Girls' Ski Team
Aren 't those skis heavy? -Seoung- Wook, Peter, Woo-Sung, Kyle, and Sheila show off their skis.
We had high expectations for the girls team at the begining of the year. However, after the first three meets, it looked like all was lost. It was at this time that they pulled together and raced to a 2nd and two 1st place finishes to qualify for the conference and state meets. We were very pleased with their progress and feel that the future looks very good as it is a young team. We are again looking forward to next year. -Mr. Kasper93

Working with this year's Porn Pon squad has been an interesting and unique experience. Very few of the girls had any previous experience and this created quite a challenge. Wayland Academy is a great place to learn something about the language and culture of another country. Some of us come here to learn English and some of us come here to learn about the culture of America. It's not easy!! The language problem is most likely the hardest thing to overcome. Other things also make our life tough here- it's hard to be away from family and friends but we are doing our best. We want to talk to Americans and learn about their culture. But Americans also need to talk to us. Learning about our culture can be as much fun as our learning about America's. The world is getting closer and closer. What makes Wayland a friendly place? I believe its diversity makes the Wayland community a friendly place. Students can learn about different customs and traditions around the world just by conversing with their friends. Students are from all over the world: from the European community like Spain, Germany, France, England; from the Pacific community like Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, and West Malaysia. Other students come from Pakistan, Barbados, M exico, and Saudi Arabia. Each student brings information about a different style of living. As it says on Mr. Cobb's office window,

Pillars 1993 Dedieation To a Host Dedicated Person! Gloria Wheeler
Throughout the years Wayland has been most fortunate to have able and devoted faculty and staff members. The Pillars' staff recognizes one such person this year. A concerned attention to details - and not merely the dotting of i's - has been her trademark throughout the past thirtytwo years of service to Wayland Academy. A vast knowledge of the Academy - gained through research and her experience as a secretary, capital campaign administrator, and coordinator for developmental and annual programs has enabled Gloria Wheeler to be a truly invaluable member of the administrative staff A native of Beaver Dam, Mrs. Wheeler attended Prospect Hall in Milwaukee from which she received an executive secretary certificate and first joined the Wayland supportive staff as a secretary in 1954. She left in 1957 for maternity leave and family responsibilities (her son Bryan subsequently was graduated from Wayland in 1976), but returned to the Academy in 1964. She then served in a number of secretarial positions through 1978, including two years as Secretary to the President and Headmaster.
There are many students on campus who don't realize what Gloria Wheeler does. They cannot be faulted for this because Gloria goes about her work very quietly. They will find out as soon as they become alumni. So many students have come back to campus, for reunions or just for a visit and mentioned how helpful she is to them. She is directly responsible for publicizing the great things our alums are doing. Considering the fact this is Wayland's 138th year, that is quite a job. A relative of mine graduated from Wayland in 1927. She is the oldest living alumni, currently a librarian at the home she resides in and Gloria manages to keep tabs on her. I have worked with Gloria for 12 years. My first direct interaction with her was in yearbook production. When I was yearbook advisor, I quickly found out that she was my most avid supporter and most helpful critic. She noticed the graphic messages and the artistic qualities of the book that many others didn't notice. Students that took my journalism classes learned to always ask what "that lady in development" thought of the yearbook. Now, as Fine Arts Department Chair, I work with her on some of the programs, not as a part of the job description, but it is sort of understood that she will find time to look over my graphic design for programs, and I hers. She is most helpful. Without Gloria Wheeler a lot of things would be not so quietly missed. Dee Walter 112
In 1978 she was appointed the Research Analyst and subsequently served as the staff administrator for the 125th Anniversary Capital Campaign. In June of 1980 she was named Coordinator for Development, a position she maintains today, although the title has been changed to Coordinator for the Annual Programs. Parents' Weekends, Alumni Weekends, the annual Spring Auction, the Annual Gift Fund, development, scholarship funds - the list goes on. It is perhaps most appropriate that we recognize this tireless and highly effective member of the Wayland administrative staff When this individual receives a project, the job gets done and done well! Thanks, Mrs. Wheeler.
I made a big decision a little while ago. I don't remember what it was, which
probably goes to show That many times a simple choice can prove to be essential Even though it often might appear inconsequential. I must have been distracted when I left
my home because Left or right I'm sure I went. (I wonder which it was!) Anyway, I never veered: I walked in that direction Utterly absorbed, it seems, in quiet introspective. For no reason I can think of, I've wandered far astray. And that is how I got to where I am today. - Bill Watterson 113

Pillars Staff 1993
It is always a struggle to finish a book, however when a group is willing to work hard and together, it makes the work seem much easier and often even fun . I have enjoyed the hours spent with the yearbook staff this year. I am sorry to see the senior members go, but I also feel confident in the capabilities of the underclassmen I have worked with. Thank you for any donations you have made of your time or pictures, it all helps to create a personalized yearbook. -Mrs. Urbanek Yearbook Staff

Clockwise: Hard workers Asma Ali, H eather Wiggins, Lisa Middleton and Bridget Getzen look for pictures for their pages. John Scheff, Peter Grogan, Josh Saxe and Lauren Brogna no getting down to business. Staff members during a lighter moment experiencing War Heads, a very tart candy. Bridget and Lisa collaborating on the collage. Mia Kim and Chris Choi "discussing" their page. John and Josh getting syched up. Mr. Patterson and Payal Jhaveri hard at work.
