Miss Mitchell, a graduate of the Wayland Academy in the Class of 1919 and Alumni Secretary of Wayland for more than 30 years, combines goodness humaneness and sensitivity in rare measure. She has given herself to this place of learning in distinguished measure. TOO MISS MITCHELL, THIS ISSUE OF PILLARS IS AFFECTIONATELY DEDICATED.

MARION E. MITCHELL

The Encyclopedia Britannica would be out paged if I were to exnumerate the wealth of the facts & fancies that my memory conjures up covering the scores of years that I was privileged to be an active part of Wayland. My four student years, with their inevitable ups-and-downs, went by like a flash, leaving a residue of priceless memories. With the beginning of the next school year, I was back at Wayland as the secretary to President Brown. Under his tutelage, with his great love for & belief in Wayland (which he had attended. as a boy), I caught a wider knowledge of the school- its enviable past, the value of its happy hard working present, & a glimpse into the expanding & enriched future. All of the valuable experiences I had through nearly half a century, the greatest was the accumulation of so many wonderful friends . They have gone to the far corners of the earth, but through the magic of our Wayland fellowship we still share a strong loyalty . We belong to the Wayland Family in the best sense of the word . We were "kindred in a filial love," as are song" Allegiance" states. "We are the trustees of the future & as such we must think beyond the present, beyond ourselves & consider what effects our acts & decisions may have u pan posterity." You will never know the depth of my appreciation to you- The class of 1974- for including me in your activities of today. It shows again the continuity of the concern & loyalty that is part of our Wayland heritage. 1 am grateful indeed for the honor you have given me. 2

Miss Marion Mitchell

There's a rule against smoking in the girls room!

What- me worry?

A typical Senior Jock .

Eat My Shorts!

If you ask me one more time ..

Next Varsity Club is going to make clay bunnies.

Maybe if I close my eyes they won't see me.

And you take the little porkers neck and you twist it.

Wee .. . these rehersals get preeety long . . .

Bea never comes out on top.

Quick, somebody straighten me out!

My teeth are stuck!

Another rough day at the office.

OPENING OF SCHOOL I can honestly say I was a little frightened the first day, but everyone was in the same situation I was. People were really friendly and aside from the lumpy bed I could feel at home.

SEE HOW THEY RUN Small but appreciative audiences enjoyed See How They Run, a three act farce and the first productions of the Wayland Players. Galloping in and out of the four doors of an English vicargge are an American actress and actor, a cockney maid who experiences alcohol for the first time, four men in clergymen 's suits presenting the problems of mistaken identities and even an escaped prisoner .

Bruce, For the past for years you have contributed so much of your time and self to the theatre that we all nere at Wayland are eternally grateful; for without your untiring help Waylands theatre would not be. Wayland Community

Homecoming The combination of Homecoming and Parent's Weekend was " the best ever" this year at Wayland. A buffet dinner, musical program, an almost continuous athletic schedule and a very spirited pep rally highlighted the weekend . The varsity football team came through with a victory that gave everyone something to cheer about. Saturday evening was topped off by a dance for the students and a gathering for faculty and parents . It was a very successful weekend for all; good people , good times , and good memories .

Before- After

1-2-3-BlOW! Now 1. know why they call it a BOARDING school.

The Varsity Cheerleaders, led by small but mighty julie Heacox, developed into one of the finest squads Wayland has seen. Aided by their advisors, Carol Pellowski and Marcia Burnham, these girls added pep and spirit to many of Wayland's athletic events. Undaunted by yells of "rah-Rah" or "jock", this year both squads worked in promoting school spirit and trying to attract more fans to athletic events.

"The Wayland Redmen Began their climb toward excellence. This year the redmen won two games and lost six games. Out of the six games lost the players were in there fighting most of the way. This, in comparison to the last two seasons was a great improvement. The team, as the season progressed began to think victory even though they were usually outweighed by twenty to thirty pounds per man." Coach Kasper

Students are expected to be able and willing to assume a portion of the

january Short Term

responsibility for sustained study, because the opportunity to focus upon one or two topics (projects) should provide the stimulus for the study in depth.

The independent study program provides an opportunity, especially for upperclassmen to be involved in a project which could be related to a possible future career.

Students and teachers pool their efforts and ingenuity in a joint adventure into educational

excitement and learning.
