ACTIVITIES
ORIENTA TION Orientation is time for getting to know each other and the school. It is registration, "moving in", bone-tiring initiative exercises, a picnic, millions of mosquitoes, square dancing, taking standardized tests, and crashing at the end of the day. New students participated in wall climbing, polewalking, balance beams, fidget ladders, and a variety of other wonderful little experiences all designed to test their teamwork and individual mettle. At the end of two days of this stuff, we were almost relieved to get to the books.

WAYLAND IN THE
MOVIES "Teddy" , a horror-comedy movie being produced by Amulet Films of Toronto, Canada, was filmed in Beaver Dam during September and October. A number of scenes were filmed at Wayland. The library, Wayland Hall, and Mr. VanHaren 's classroom were all used as sets for the picture. Some Wayland students got walk-on parts and Mr. Van Haren even got a "speaking role", one line as a delivery truck driver. The film will have its distribution in Canada, but a Beaver Dam " premier" is planned for sometime in 1980. See you in the movies!
Director Lew Lehman talks over a lighting problem.
Star Sammy Snyders plays crazy eights while he waits with one of his costars for a new scene to be set . Actresses break while sound equipmen t is set.

ACTION WEEKEND Action Weekend was held the weekend of September 23-24. Approximately 90 percent of the students participated in the activities, which ranged from a movie binge to rock-climbing, bicycling, camping, hiking, and exotic eating on an island. There was also some activity by dedicated sleepers, as evidenced by pictures on this page.

SPIRIT WEEK AND PARENTS' WEEKEND Spirit Week began October 1 and finished on Saturday, October 7 with the traditional Parents' Weekend dance and the crowning of the king and queen. The week included such things as " color day," button day, class competition in games decorating , and effigy building and it ended with most fall sports teams playing before enthusiastic crowds of parents who had come to the campus for visiting and for parent conferences. The traditional Friday night pep rally was one of the best ever, and the "spirit stick" was awarded to the juniors.

FALL CHEERLEADERS - JUNIOR VARSITY 19
FOOTBALL Because of the limited number of upperclassmen who chose to play football this year, there was no varsity team. However, a large contingent of freshmen and sophomores turned out for the sport, and they, along with a nucleus of juniors, had a very successful junior varsity program; two of their three losses were to varsity opponents. The coaching staff is very optimistic about next year when Wayland will return to a varsity program.

125TH ANNIVERSARY Wayland is 125 years old this year. To observe this occasion, a "Founder's Day" convocation was held in conjunction with the Fall Parents' Weekend activities. The keynote address was given by Representative John Anderson, a Republican from Illinois and an announced candidate for the Republican nomination for president in the 1980 election . Included on this page are some pictures from the past at Wayland. :VfRS. B ENJAMI:\ NEW I路 LL, 路A YLAl\'o's J'JRST P){F CFP1RF S
