FIRE! What could have been a serious fire had it not been detected as soon as it was, turned out to be little more than messy and pretty inconvenient for the people who work in the social studies office. An overheated concrete floor caused an under-layment wood floor to begin to smolder. The floor had to be torn out, but no other damage was done and no one was hurt .

Stand in line to register. Stand in line to buy your books. Find your room and haul in your junk. Stand in line for lunch. Find your orientation crew. Play some weird games In the !D'm. Climb a wall. Retrieve a pail from the "ragfog Amazon". Do a trust fall. Cross an electric fence. Stand on a post with ten other crazy people. Get a tire over a pole. Walk up a pole With a belaying harness on. Swing on a Fope while a bunch of people try to pass an egg along the line. Walk a tightrope. Climb a fidget ladder. Swing your partner dosie-do . Fun, eh? That's ORIISN1ATION, wlks; a chance to get to know new people and to learn some teamwork. That's also the first two days at Wayland each fall. It doesn'i get much less hectic after that , either!

ORIENTATION

Take a hike, paddle a canoe, ride a bike , run a race, climb a rock, float a raft, eyeball a movie, ride a " buck in' bronc" , gorge yourself on exotic foods: those are some of the things you can do on Action Weekend - a two-day experiment in experiential learning. This annual weekend function gives students and teachers a chance to work together in a non-classroom settings and for students to get to know each other better. And it's a good time.

NOBODY SAID ACTION WEEKEND HAD TO BE ALL ACTION!

FACES AND PLACES

SPIRIT WEEK The week of October 12 saw much enthusiasm and exciting competition between the various classes. Loud Day , Backwards Day, and Red and White Day were the weekday activities as well as effigy building and decoration of various buildings. Parent's Weekend began Friday, October 16 with parent-teacher conferences. The Pe p Rally that night was full of excitement, vicious competition, and School Spirit. The Homecoming King , Queen , and court were announced, and the spirit stick was awarded to the Juniors, with the Sophomores coming in second, the Seniors settling with third, and the Freshman and Eighth graders came in fourth Saturday was full of athletic competitions in which parents got a glimpse of Wayland 's Athletics. Saturday evening the Home Coming Dance was held and the King, Queen and court were crowned.

SWIMMING

The odds were against these girls from the beginning. That didn't stop their efforts. We were all disappointed that we never won a meet: however , we did tie in a double-duo meet. Soumaya Young placed sixth in the final Conference Swim Meet in the individual back stroke. Margueritte Grogan suprised the team by finishing third in the Conference Diving with one week of practice. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball squad took second place in the Midwest Preps conference with an overall record of 13-2. The girls never gave up. We survived Margueritte 's mascots-the obnoxious lobster hat and the little Redman . Jamie (Jet Setter) Jenson wouldn't smile until her spikes reached 100 mph. Gen Johansson smiled when she killed the ball. Ruth Daily 's vicious right arm flattened balls. Pat Dillon giggled when she served. Jessica Baylen rounded out a super four-year career. Delia (Mickey Mouse) Duchicela kept us smiling during those monotonous drills. Takami Ito screeched " Mine" and vacated the court. Liz Dutenhaver said "Oh no" every time she hit the ball. Julie Shoemaker happily served her way to stardom. Edie Howard didn't break her foot heroically on the court, but she kept our books, Veda Childress wiggled her way through her managing duties, laughing and coaxing the ball with her body english. Kim Newton blasted her serves off gym ceilings, and Don sweated it out and twisted and threw his towel.

A significant number of injuries to key players early in the season turned the 1981 Soccer Season into a "building and learning" experience with many younger players gaining worthwhile game time. The team as a whole worked hard and were very enthusiastic and improved in technical skill over the season. -Coach George Cobb -Coach Jaeger

JV FIELD HOCKEY The 1981 Field Hockey team started the season with only four returning letter winners. With hard work and the leadership of these four Seniors the Field Hockey team made great strides. 'JJ RSITY FOOTBALL The 1981 "Redmen Football" son's goal was ts> play with "IN E'NSITY" as a team. Our defense t nked second overall and our offense ranked # 1 rushing and #4 passing. After losing 3 d ose games early in the season the Seniors dedicated themselves to winning the last 4 games to complete a winning season. Strong leadership by these Seniors will be missed in "82" but the winning attitude will be carried over in o " 1982." Finishing 4-3 tied for third i the Midwest Prep Conference . 路 oach Steve Sharpe

The Wayland men's basketball team had many new looks this year. We never looked ahead or back, but did our best and worked our hardest to achieve our final goaL We had some adversity, and through that adversity we learned that competing successftllly can be almost as much fun as winning. Through that adversity the team members grew as a unit and as young men, which was perhaps the greatest accomplishment in our successful season. We were 8-13 overall; 3-9 in the conference. We won the sub-regional game , but lost in the regional at Green Bay. -Coach Kuckkahn

The most amazing aspect of the Wayland Swim Team was its success. There were ten swimmers and they did outstandingly. We finished third in the Conference Relays in December, and fourth in the Conference Meet in February . The 400 free relay approached the record with Smith, Grisham, Parlow and Buchanan. Margueritte broke the pool diving record , she missed the school record by .19. The pool next year just isn 't going to be the same without Mr. Wolfe. Rick Roebke is looking forward to another successful season. The overall record for the season was 10-5.

THINK SNOW! DOWNHILL SKI TEAM The ski season started out with an enthusiastic group of skiers. With hard work and a desire to improve, the team developed into one of the top teams in the conference. Their efforts were rewarded as the team qualified for the state ski meet and will head for Wausau in late February. This year's team has many excellent underclassmen which holds much promise for the future . -Coach Dave Kasper

Fencing is a three-season sport requiring all fencers to be members of the U.S. Fencing Association , with the right to fence anywhere in the U.S. Since only two high schools in Wisconsin have fencing as a varsity sport, all but two meets are state meets. Only three are restricted to under-20; this means Wayland's fencers usually fence against university teams. Our foil and epee teams were undefeated in Midwest high school competition in November and placed third in the Midwest High School Foil Championship in Illinois in January. - Monsieur Sampon

"We've made it, a sigh of relief and numerous utters of joy. This book would never have evolved if the pictures and the typing hadn't been done. Thanks to Doug Burnham, Joe Jasper, Tyler King, Chris LeVally, and my personal camera-man Mike VanHaren. We counted on these people to no end. Mr. VanHaren deserves the "Man of the Year" award. He spent countless hours working with an inexperienced staff and editor. He made it through me amazingly! This yearbook is for you. Enjoy it, our efforts and an inconceivable amount of time went into this book. Thank you to all people who gave up their time; it was greatly appreciated. HAVE FUN looking back in time. Thanks and T oodles, Margueritte Grogan Editor
