Chapel;
An All Campus Experience!
Chapel
Morning Chapel Chapel was an all-campus experience every Friday morning. Sometimes it was difficult to wake up in the morning, but it was worth it because one never knew what to expect. This year, Reverend Frieze brought in spokespersons with different religious backgrounds. One student called it "a cultural experience because we learned about religions that we were not at all familiar with."

Saga Reveals

From soyburgers to turkey casserole, most Waylanders would agree that Saga had an important impact on everyone's stomachs. But actually, if everyone could see through the doors into Saga's kitchen, they would realize that there isn't a huge soybean machine hidden in the basement after all. Instead, they would see what a great job Saga Dave and his crew do to provide a wide variety of foods, prepared in many unique ways. Sure, Mom's cooking may be more personalized, but Saga is definitely 0. K. Some comments on Saga, are as follows: "Turkey pot pie all the way! " Sarah Neely '86 "Saga's knack for disguising leftovers is truly amazing." Laura Bissell '86

Laundry Room, Mail Boxes! Hot Spots On And Off Campus Laundry??? Supplied with change. laundry soap, and very little knowledge, I set out for the basement of Pickard Hall. Like a set in a horror movie, the room at the end of the hall was quiet, dark and threatening. My pace slowed and my heart beat quickened. " This is it," I thought. "I'm finally going to do my laundry." My first attempt at laundry was successful. The fact that my red shirt turned my socks pink was a minor detail. The worst part of the whole process, was dealing with socks. Every time I put in six socks only five came back out again. All in all, whether my mother believes it or not, I really did learn to do my own laundry. Well, sort of ... at least I don' t wash whites and reds together any more. And I always try to start out with seven socks.

"The Union is the place to go to relieve oneself from academic pressures," Jim McCool stated, "I anxiously look forward to a tough game of fooseball after a hard two hours of studying." A. "It's a good place to dance and people watch," said Jill Bond. "And some people go just to see if someone else is there." A. "The newest addition to the snack bar in the Union is the slush machine. It's the most exciting part of the Union," the senior class agreed. A. Nick Rumsfeld summed it up nicely by saying, "The Union is the highpoint of my life at Wayland."

Orchestra, Choir, Jazz Band, Play
Making Music Once upon a time Wayland Academy was limited to the harsh sounds of blaring radios, screaming students and squeaky doors. Then one day the wise man, Mr. Peck, decided that someone must do something about this dilemma. He did. He formed a jazz band, a choir, and an orchestra. The music department is rapidly gaining a widespread reputation for excellence.

Art Classes In Action Campus I Artsy Antics The Art Department was always a popular place among students. The pace was really easy-going. Mrs. Dohmann encouraged students to work on their own projec ts. giving them lots of freedom to choose their media. "It was great to be able to listen to tunes while working," said Lucy Grantz. Although the art classes provi ded 45 minutes of recuperation from academ ia, they were demanding in other ways. Each project had to be carefully planned and created. Students worked on some of their projects for weeks, but always felt the finished products were worth waiting for .

Boys' Basketball Girls' Basketball Boys' Basketball Basketball for the 1985 boys' team was a serious matter. From the first day of the season until the last, every player worked very hard. In the words of Rob Gibson, " The season was successful; however, it was the result of a lot of tough practices and hard work on everyone's .part. " The diligence paid off. This year's team improved greatly, after discovering that the secret to success was hard work and teamwork.
Girls' Basketball
Girls' Basketball
The two words, short and quick, best describe the girls on the 1985 team . The girls knew at the beginning of their season that their height created a problem ; however, they quickly found a way to overcome this obstacle. Coach Mr. Schantz revealed the teams ' secret weapon , "The girls do have a lack of height, but they have good attitudes and good overall athletic ability." The victories for the basketball team began when the girls used their speed, along with teamwork, to overcome their shortcomings. Eventually these skills led them to victories.

Behind all the glamour was a group of hard working girls. A member of the squad observed, "Practices are tough, but it's fun when we perform." The purpose of the Pom-Pon Squad was well stated by Advisor, Mr. Lilly, who commented, "Pom-Pon has a place at Wayland because it adds color and entertainment for the fans."

Cross-Country . .•
The familiar cries of the 1985 Cheerleading Squad will long be remembered; especially the leading voice of Pleshette Hamb. The cheerleaders cheered in support of all the Wayland sports, promoting school spirit. Mrs . Peck, the cheerleading advisor, stated, "I'm especially proud of the cheerleaders this year for the time, effort, and enthusiasm they have contributed." U-Rah-Rah will be a cheer long remembered and a symbol of the cheerleaders' enthusiasm.
Cross-Country What does cross-country mean? Rick Tye seemed to sum it up well: "It's been a long run." According to Coach Bruce Hunter, "The Wayland Cross Country Team ran consistently in practices and meets, and there were many good individual and team efforts. The season's high point was when freshman Kira Salak won the State Championship in the WISAA Class B State Meet.'' Michael Blanchard recapped the season well: "It was a lot of hard work mixed with even more fun ." Top: Rick Tye strides to victory. Field Hockey
Paula MacGregor commented , " The main goal of the players and coaches was to work together and have fun. " The team 's new strategy of teamwork and fun was a formula which led them through a very successful season.
Field Hockey "It was an experience I'll never forget ," Joy Lambros commented. The Girls' Field Hockey Team began practice at the end of August in the extreme heat, and ended their season on a cool , rainy October day. Only dedicated field hockey players could have endured these temperatures. The girls worked very hard, always keeping their spirits high. Coach Diane Alpaugh commented , "The best thing about this year's team was the progress the girls made." The Girls' Field Hockey Team was successful in many ways; not only did they survive the weather and torturous practices, but they also chalked up several victories.

The team didn't bring home the state trophy, but the players worked hard individually, and worked well as a team.
Golf The Golf Team worked hard this year, but due to low preseason scores the team was not up to par. " The year was disappointing, but we are confident that next year will be much better for us," commented Andy Buchta. The 1985 Ice Hockey Team experienced several changes such as: additional coaches, a new conference, and new players. These factors helped the team to improve. Jamie Parker pointed out another factor which led to improvement, " We all worked together and this increased our ability to do well. " In general the season went well, bringing smiles to the faces of the players, coaches, and fans .
Physical Education
Physical Education The Physical Education Program underwent several changes this year. John Lofberg pointed out that, "there was more variety this year, and we really got lots of exercise." The positive comments continued with Barb Smith stating, "Having P.E. after school was a good idea because there was less of a rush to change and more time for activity." The students participated in such activities as: Weight Training, Volleyball , Tennis, Badminton, and Aerobics. The changed program resulted in more participants with trimmer bodies and happier faces.

The 1985 Boys' Soccer Team kicked their way into a very successful season. The team worked hard in both the heat of August and the cold of October. This year's team was unified and, as a result, posted a fine record. Several players commented that the team was more of a family than a team. Coach Deanne Neumann stated, "The girl swimmers all had very positive attitudes from beginning to end, despite of the size of the team." The scores didn't reflect the ability and hard work of the team . They improved greatly as the season progressed and had lots of fun along the way.
Boys' Swimming The Boys' Swim Team was not large either this year, but the swimmers all worked very hard to improve individually and as a team. John Tysver said . "Deanne was a great coach . The 1985 Girls' Tennis Team could brag about having good luck, a good coach, and lots of fans. "The attitude of yag6ttawanna (you've got to want to win) was shown by every player," commented Jenny Rogers. Coach , Dr. Ellis added, "I enjoy the opportunity to coach because it gives me a chance to work with the students on a one-to-one basis. One thing I saw in every girl on the team was the determination to win!" Tennis is unique in that it is both an individual and team sport. Dr. Ellis was able to instill in the players the spirit of teamwork as well as the desire to improve individually. Another interesting aspect of tennis is its appeal to spectators. Stacey Westra recalled, "It was neat to have fans at the court for every match ."
Weight Lifting Pumping iron was the name of the game for a few individuals last winter. Beginning its first season this year, Weight Lifting became part of the fam ily of Wayland winter sports. Fencing
The Wayland Fencers did a remarkable job this year. The team competed primarily at the college level. However, despite the intense competition, several of the fencers qualified for the Junior Olympics. Under the expert leadership of Monsieur Sampan, the fencers had a fun and demanding year. Micky Kllmm expressed the team's feelings when she stated, "I feel proud and sad to be one of the last Wayland Fencers." With the retirement of Monsieur Sampan the fencing tradition may come to an end ; however the memories and rewards will allow fencing to live indefinitely.

Spirit Week
A Week Of Festivities
This year Spirit Week brought out the true spirit in many students. During the week they dressed up for Clash Day, Celebrity Day, and Red and White Day. On Celebrity Day, one could see such stars as Madonna, Buckwheat and the Esprit victims. The parents were entertained by the skits put on by each class at the Pep Rally on Friday night. The students seemed to express their excitement as well as their spirit. This carefree spirit of fun and frolic in the fall leaves was soon to be replaced by the more serious atmosphere of Parent-TeacherMentor conferences.

Parents' Weekend Continue
The Parents Arrive Enthusiastic students and parents could be found everywhere on Parents' Weekend. During most of the weekend, students participated in various sports events, a casual barbecue, a music recital, and a college fair. Saturday night at the Spirit Week Dance, the students and parents 'boogied till they blistered.'

Final Thoughts About Parents' Weekend
Once again, Fall Parents' Weekend came to an end, and most of the students of Wayland Academy sat back and congratulated themselves on yet another job well done in academics. Some of the students, at this point, continued trying to achieve their set goals, while others decided to set new sights for themselves. Only a moment could be spared, however, for contemplation. Then the rush was on to do Monday's homework.

Everyday Is Halloween At Wayland
Many Halloween festivities took place this year. One night, there was a pumpkin carving contest in the dining hall. There was also, of course, a costume party I dance held in the Union. The next night was Horror Movie Night: Did students seem to miss Trickor-Treating? Everyone loves to go from house to house in costume, collecting candy; however, the students enjoyed the various activities on campus. Uzma Samadani said, "It is a unique time of the year at Wayland because students can finally reveal their true personalities. II
A very mature senior stated, "I only like it because I can eat more candy. II

Special Moments: The Guiding Light Of The Holidays
The holidays are special moments at Wayland. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were prepared especially well by Dave Scherer and the SAGA crew this year. Trees were trimmed and parties were held in the dorms. Probably the most dramatic "special moment" of the season was the Festival of Lessons and Carols. The Chapel was trimmed and candles were lighted before the ceremony. Faculty members and students, alike, participated in this religious service. In the midst of their busy academic schedules, everyone paused for a moment to reflect on Christmases past, and think about the true meaning of Christmas present.

Give Me a 'P' - an 'A' - an 'L' - an 'M' What Does It Spell? Excellence! A Special Tribute To The Many Faces Of Mr. Palm There's more to him than meets the eye. Many may ask, "What goes on in that office in the basement of Roundy Hall?" Mr. Palm spends countless hours fulfilling his roles as Director of Publications, Ella Dye Supervisor, and mentor. You know there has been a sports event when you see Mr. Palm with blue ink around his eyes. (This is from the pen he used to write the sports articles at midnight.) Many wonder how he can solve seemingly insurmountable problems, make order out of confusion, ... and do it with a smile. "He's obviously working hard," explained Sarah Goddard, "because you never see him out of his office." Mr. Palm is one of many who helps to make Wayland a community not just an academy.
We nave fii'ral~y captured the face of excellence: Mr. Palm.

Special Thanks To The New Cultural Events Chairmen, And The Ellises Cultural Programs In previous yea rs the entire school packed up and left for a day at the theater. This yea r. the theater came to us. Mr. Seighman and Mr. Schantz have taken charge of the Academy 's special events. We were entertained with various lectures and shows. including a nuclear arms talk and a drin king while driving seminar. The diverse topics satisfied all tastes.
Special Gatherings At The Ellises' The snow fell softly as groups of students walked the narrow path to the Ellises'. As soon as the door opened. laughter cou ld be heard. Teachers and students talked together, about everything except academics. at the annual post Lessons and Carols gathering. Refreshments were spread in abundance on the festive tables. Pleshette Hamb stated, "The Ellises' deserves a thank you. It was very nice."

The Ellises host many similar parties. always providing a homey atmosphere. With the help of the Saga crew, the refreshments are always wonderful. So. thank you Dr. and Mrs. Ellis for many enjoyable gatherings at you r home.

Dedicated To Monsieur Sampon For Many Years Of French
And Fencing
Monsieur Sampan will be missed by many for many reasons. French students will miss the quality of his teaching. His ability to create a desire, within a student, to learn shines brighter than anything. For this he will be remembered. The fencing team will miss his "diehard" spirit and his constant support. For the fencers, Monsieur's retirement is especially sad. It's easy to find a French teacher, but not a fencing coach like Monsieur. "Monsieur allowed me to explore and discover a little piece of myself through fencing, that I wouldn't have found otherwise," reflected Micky KUmm. It is with love, respect and gratitude that we choose to honor Monsieur Sampan for 27 years of excellence.
