A spectator's perspective ...
Catherine Maxwell, Kris Allen, Tracy Kearns, and Pam Scholz show their school spirit.
Spectators at Wayland are usually students because parents can't always be around. The students all seem to get along well at the athletic events. They cheer and fear that dreaded last point. "Gosh what a game this one is. I can't imagine what they're thinking out there! If only he'd go left . . . no right ... 路路 screamed Tracy Kearns.

A thought about hockey practice ... The dream was a good one: I was in Madison Square Garden dribbling down the court. I passed the ball to Larry Bird and he gave it back to me. I slammed it home and won the game for the Celtics. The buzzer sounded. Suddenly everybody was gone and I was left alone on the court, holding my alarm clock. /looked at the clock and it read 5:00 A.M.
Bill Shropshire eyes the puck for a pass while Matt Hickey and Jud Werner follow the play.
All of a sudden I woke up; it was 5: 15 A.M. and it was time for another morning hockey practice. Still in a half-daze I gathered my gear together, piled into the van and headed for Waupun. There I worked for an hour and a half on everything from breakouts, to shooting, passing, man up and man down situations, and finally ended up practice with some sprints. Feeling the last of my second wind, I made my way into the van and headed back for another day of classes at the Academy.

Matt Hickey, Teresa Rosado, and Sam Ansell prepare for their trip.
The Fall Play Refreshing! Differentl Educational! These were just a few words used to describe the Wayland Players Fall Production, " The Teahouse of the August Moon ." The theater touches almost everyone at Wayland Academy, whether one works backstage, has the lead, or sits in the audience. Behind the scenes work can be rewarding and Michele Neuser comented to that effect. " I feel that drama is challenging. I have enjoyed my experience in our Wayland production." The play was a great success, with much praise due to Mrs. Gwendolyn Gillen, the director. As Sam Ansell remarked, " It all seemed more than worth the effort in the end." Th e set was especially stunning and the costumes were exceptiona l. Who knows? Maybe these are future producers, actors and actresses. One day, will you say, " It all started when I played the lead in " The Teahouse of the August Moon" ... ?"

Spirit Week "The school spirit was in bloom during this week," stated Kathy Karagan is. This statement sums up the events of Spirit Week. The festivities began with a clash as students dressed in everything from paisley and polka dots, to stripes and checks on Clash Day. Twin Day was a new twist and many thought they were seeing double throughout the day. During the traditional Red and White Day, one could feel the excitement building as classes got together to put the final touches on their effigies or to rehearse their skit for the Pep Rally. The week ended with the Spirit Week Dance which "was a lot of fun," remarked Linda Yang. Spirit Week wasn't quickly forgotten, especially because there was a half Neely, Wayland's term for a late start, the following Monday.

Many paren ts enjoy the football game despite the rain.
Parents' Weekend Fall Parents' Weekend of 1986 was a time of tension, anticipation and fun for everyone. It began on October third when the first carload of parents pulled into the circle on front campus. Parents rushed around frantically trying to find their children. After a long greeting, the parents went off on their own adventure. They entered Lindsay Gymnasium, a room which contained a maze of tables and smiling teachers. After these conferences parents got a chance to see their children in action, as they watched sports teams compete. The next day was more relaxing and parents took the opportunity to spend time with their children. When the parents left at the end of the day, there was no doubt that they felt , in one way or another, the invisible touch Wayland Academy had left on them .

Halloween Halloween at Wayland Academy is a fun and unique time. Students "dug in" and turned out some extremely original pumpkins. Later, at the dance, students disguised themselves in various costumes. Linda Yang commented, "I was disappointed that I could not go trick-or-treating, but the dance made up for it." Scarey movies that made one's flesh creep and crawl were also shown throughout the weekend. How long will Halloween '86 haunt your memory?

Richelle Eliason and sister Diane '85. Diane's feelings about her Wayland experience: Wayland has been a great influence on my life. Although Wayland seemed small and confined, now I can really appreciate the diversity of its students and faculty . Everyone brought to Wayland their own personal ideas and experiences; the good friends I made were very unique. I learned to accept people for who they were, their differences, and their beliefs. The challenges as well as the encouragement I received at Wayland have truly helped me at Marquette. Living on a large urban campus has removed the personal attention I once received at
Wayland, but my confidence and self-motivation rooted in high school has given me strength to accomplish my goals here. As my sister, Richelle, graduates this spring, I know she'll be leaving many close friends, but she'll take with her countless memories. Her Wayland experience will be a terrific benefit to her in college and throughout life. Congratulations Richelle, I wish all the best for you!
Ning Herrick relaxes during ./ the early morning hours at Wayland '84.
Pamela Haas '85: Wayland Academy taught me many things. but most of all it prepared me for responsibility. As a sophomore in college, I no longer ask for 'per' to go downtown, use a signout sheet, or have to study from 7:30 to 9:30 at night. In college I find mysel f, though. telling someone where I'm going and about what time I'll be back. And after dinner, I have an incredible habit of pulling out the books and studying without any coaxing . Wayland taught me to take the responsibility of being courteous. and the
responsibility of keeping to my studies, even when the college temptations become very great. You will not fully appreciate what Wayland has done for you until you have left the secure compound of Universi ty Avenue.
U
Ning Herrick '85: I used to think everyone at Wayland was so much alike. Now that I've been gone for two years I realize what unique individuals my friends and teachers at Wayland were. I also realize that I was not only allowed to be, but encouraged to be an individual. I now am com fortable in college with that person I am, while some of my peers are still struggling.
Alumni Weekend is a tradition:
Morgan O'Regan '85: My experiences at Wayland made the jump into college life a lot easier. I learned such lessons as how valuable change, especially quarters, is; not to wash reds with whites. unless you yearn for pinks, and how to deal with cafeteria style food. All these lessons my fellow freshmen classmates had to learn during college rather than before it. For example, it took a lot longer for their tastebuds to get adjusted to dorm delicacies than it did for my own highly conditioned ones. Consequently, many of them ended up ordering Dominoes every night and most of them were broke and twenty-five pounds heavier by the semester's end. However, these were minor lessons. More importantly, life at Wayland taught me how to manage time efficentl y. When I was co-editor of Pillars, I had to deal with getting my homework done and meeting yearbook deadlines. Yet , I also wanted to enjoy the oh-so-fun extracurricular activities Beaver Dam had to offer like Shopko and the Beaver Theater. I needed to learn how to make the best use of my time. This was an invaluable lesson because Columbia, Missouri has not just one movie theater, but six, not just one mall, but ten, plus lots of other "activities" like frat parties. If I hadn't learned the lesson of "efficient time management" I would have probably flunked out by now.
Her roommate and Rosina Samadani '85 enjoy college life at MIT. Rosina tell s her feelings about Wayland's imprint: Everything I've learned at Wayland has come back to haunt me from L' Hopi tal 's Rule to the Law of Cosines. I made lasting friends at Wayland and, although at times it is difficult, I try to keep in touch with them. Good luck to the class of '87. Congrats As!

Junior Tao '85 writes a letter to his "dear old friend, Mr. Wayland Academy": Dear Mr. Wayland Academy, How are you doing? I hope everything is fine for you and your family. I haven' t seen you since last spring when I stopped by to visit. It was such an emotional and exciting visit for me. I saw so many new faces in your fam ily; that reminded me of the first time I moved in to live with your family. I was so scared because that was the first time I rea lly lived away from my biological fa mily; and for me it was a long, long way from home. You were so kind to accept me to live with your family. Many elder fa mily members really helped me mentally to fight my way through. They helped me to learn about this country, the people. They helped me to be more independent. The most important thing they taught me was how to respect and love people, especially friends. They listened to me when 1 needed to talk about my problems. They gave me courage to face reality when 1 was about to give up all hopes. I'm also thankful that you gave me the opportunities to seek for myself. to understand myself, and most importantly, to be myself. As a result , I'm proud of being myself.
Julia Johnson '85: Wayland was the best thing that ever happened to me, and 1 don't think I would have ever admitted it until now. It wasn't only a great growing experience, but it also helped to prepare and adjust me for the college life.
Laurie Swindull '84: While attending Wayland, we were all forced to mature faster because of the given responsibilities. Learning ski ll s such as how to live with a room mate and how to manage time well are invaluable. Ultimately, however, the Wayland environment helped me to realize my strengths and limitations. I know how hard to push myself and when to relax , an insight which shall help me for the rest of my life.

1 Herbie Moore '85 and Rob Gibson '88 talk about old times on Alumni Reunion Weekend. Herbie Moore '85: Wayland Academy was an experience I cou ld never forget, but then how could anyone? In all seriousness, if it was not for Wayland I wouldn't be the person I am today; and we all know how nice I am!
98
Dave Towner '85: Wayland Academy made the transition into college life much easier. While attending Wayland 1 was inundated with interesting experiences. Sitting with Dan Kraut '85 and Ben Scherer '85 in assembly made singing the Wayland alma mater an interesting experience. Sitting in the back row for Chapel and Assembly gave me the advantage of being able to study a few extra minutes for the upcoming exam. But more seriously, Wayland taught me how to effectively manage my time . Now, I don't need to rely on that extra study time in Chapel; I am able to plan my college studying accordingly, and still have time for fun .

Chip Hiestand '85: Alii know is what I have learned at Wayland Academy- both useful and useless. I learned that the first and last five pages of a book are the on ly real important ones, and if you sleep sitting up with your eyes open, you don't need to sleep at night. Away from Wayland. people do th ings differently. It was quite amazing to find ou t that most people wear the knot of their necktie close to their neck. not at their waist . I learned where to get a good deal on large white banners and license pla tes. Although I sometimes thought I had to do too much acedemia. it was to those circumstances above and to Wayland Academy which I owe any small achievements I have accomplished, and I know I would not change a thing.

Foreign Teachers Influence Wayland's n~wn~nŽ!Lrn: tJŠillJ~IXl
Mr. Huo shows where his home is located.
It's not everyday that someone has to adjust to a new lifestyle, new people, different foods, and dozens of wild teenagers. But that's exactly what Ms. Klein, Mr. Gong, and Mr. Huo have done this year. Ms. Klein is from West Germany and Mr. Gong and Mr. Huo are from the People's Republic of China. They have all had to leave family and friends to come to Wayland Academy. These three teachers have made lasting friendships during the year. Ms. Fanestil stated, "Ms. Klein has added a lot of fun to basement life in Linfield." And many students have benefitted from being in Mr. Huo's and Mr. Gong's Chinese History class. Do you still remember how to say "Happy New Year" in Chinese? These teachers have touched our lives during this year and we thank them for giving us the opportunity to meet and get to know them.
Ms. Klein prepares for Geometry while Mr. Gong and Mr. Patterson read to their class.

A Dedication to the Man Who Has Left a Lasting Impression
Mr. Schlicher thinks aboul writ ing the dormed list for the weekend.
A student entered the Academic Office and said, "Is Mr. Schlicher in?" The reply was, "No, he teaches second and third hours." The student said, trying to sound disappointed, "Oh well, I'll talk to him later about these 15 abscences I have." Does this scenario sound familiar? If it does, you have had the pleasure of confronting Mr. Schlicher, otherwise known as "the Chief" to his Calculus BC class, about abscences or a schedule change. Mr. Schlicher was a former Wayland student, and now is a teacher of Calculus, as well as the Director of Studies. Many are in awe of Mr. Schlicher, as he deals with everything in a calm and cool manner. Those who know him best are his students, who have been privileged to hear his old jokes such as a logarithm is a dance of the lumberjacks and his stories of his journeys to lola, Wisconsin . His students have seen him react to a surprise birthday party given to him complete with a pink cake and new chalk as a present. Mr. Schlicher is the backbone of the Academic Department and rarely is his office not beseiged by students trying to excuse their abscences or asking for help on a calculus problem. At one time or another, in some capacity, we have all come into contact with Mr. Schlicher and we owe him a thank you for his patience and excellence.

Asma Samadani and John DeVine discuss what layout design should be used for the Senior section.
The Yearbook . . . The word means fun but also lots of hard work. The staff can testify to the fact that this year the yearbook often meant coming in at night to finish a layout or to type senior quotes. But the result is rewarding. This year's book is one of the best Wayland has ever produced. There was a lot of interest and enthusiasm put into these pages, as well as a lot of time and effort. Even when deadlines seemed to be closing in, the yearbook staff maintained its good spirits and sense of humor. The result? We present you with the Invisible Touch of Wayland. The Yearbook staff:(l.-r.}3rd row-J. Tysver, M. Hickey, J. DeVine, J. Dobbs. 2nd row-K. Deitrick, J. Spring holding the final photo for the yearbook. L. Mintz, C. SchlaH, J. Ed Miller shows his school spirit at a hockey game.
Ed Miller cleans up at Ell a Dye.
Ed Miller is a very special kind of person. For those of you who don' t know Ed, he works in maintenance at Ella Dye and the Science Lecture Hall. So what makes Ed so extraordinary? Ed Miller goes beyond the line of duty; Ed is always looking out for "his boys" in Ella Dye. Whether it be a smile and a big "good morning" to start off the day, or just a sweep of the hall, he goes about things in a way that shows he takes pride in his job. Ed goes to hockey games and talks with the guys at Ella Dye; he's a real friend. Ed Miller pu ts his Invisible Touch into Wayland everyday through his job. and the way he does it.
