Goodbye!

We Came,

We Saw,

We Conquered ... on our own

The theme of our yearbook is VINI, VIDI, VICI, which in Latin means we came, we saw, we conquered. The message behind this saying portrays the feeling students have when entering. Throughout the yearbook , we hope you can recognize our Latin theme through the student's actions. As we are students at a boarding school, it is clear that we feel a certain amount of accomplishment at the end of the year, (and also at the end of the four years), and a good deal of fear to start off with when first arriving. No one will forget the memories from the start of the year at Wayland- it was at first lonely, unsettling, scary, and very new. Towards the middle of the year, living at a boarding school became more familiar, new friendships were growing stronger, and we were learning how to be more independent. Finally we have reached the end of the year, and we realized that we made it all the way through. When taking a look at yourself you may realize that living at a dorm has never been easy; we have experienced many fond memories at Wayland , along with a good share of memories that perhaps would be better not remembered.(!?) In any case, we made it, and we made it on our own. Thank yourself; and, as editors of the yearbook, we hope that the theme will be be picked up throughout the yearbook, and remembered in the future: VINI, VIDI, VICI! "The future's here, we are it, we are on our own." -Bob Weir

ORIENTATION

8

Colleen Geis calls home to say that things are A-OK!

Chris Clinton, Kim Turner, Holli Neeb, Carla Thomas, Andrea Caplan and Emily 路路 Tessmer . See how easy it is. Susan Reagan and Robin Reuthe glow after a fun filled day of Orientation .

Orientation this year at Wayland was unlike any otherwe were rained out! This caused a problem, seeing as though the majority of the activities were scheduled to be outdoors . We were missing sunny weather, but not enthusiasm . Rain or shine, we still had a good time! No one will forget the hot, rainy , sticky weather, nor Mr. Van Haren who saved the girls in front of the girls dorm with cans of OFF . Never the less, friendships were made that still remain, and probably always will .

Action Weekend Challenges Alex lppolite and Nina Diaz enjoy eating a different type of mud pie after eating out on action weekend. Morgan McBride distrustfully descends down the rock face.

Brian Davis rests after a strenuous climb as Mr. Burch gives a thumbs up for rafting the Wolf River.

More than expected This year's action weekend's were some of the best ever. The reason for this was the good weather and the variety of weekends that were offered to Wayland students this year. This will be rememberable trip for all. Rafting the wolf and rock climbing are always favorites but other weekends were just as popular for remainder of students. Smaller trips as those of Lazy Acres and photography extravaganza were just as fun as the more active trips.

Heather Genereaux chases pigs.

Abdoulaye N' Diaye and Chris Davis enjoy rollercoasters. (Will they toss their cookies as a result?)

THE Individual

Getting To Know Your Inner Self

Jen Buan isolates herself from the crowd to think about herself, while the crowd from "Hoofin' It" pose for a brief picture showing their togetherness.

Lesley Romero overcomes many fears after climbing dangerous rocks ... Mr. Johnson demonstrates his peaceful thoughts while floating down the Wolf River.

I

Coleman Hutchins has time to reflect on life in general, staring into the cool river water ... A few other rafters relax in the sun, sharing their ideas and thoughts.

Nina Diaz and Alex lppolite watch a cat in a quiet corner, away from civilization.

Spirit Week at Wayland was once again a sucess. Special events included the pep rally. The class murals contributed to the great sucess, and enthusiasm. A lot of effort was put into the designing and painting of these murals, as it was the first year that we had them.

w E

E K Boyd and Todd, do you always have this much fun ?

There simply was no competition after Tom Pechous, and Jason Brandt started in for their pies in the pie eating contest.

PARENT'S WEEKEND '89-'90 Javier Pizarro, secret reporter for candid camera, gets a picture of Ms. White and Mrs. Reynolds with his Cracker-Jack camera.

I

Omar Shaikh Lee smiles his opponent to death.

I

Jacqueline Nims and the family hug. Christine Fisher strives for the best college in the world.

PARENT'S WEEKEND . for the year of 89-90 mainly consisted of the college night, the pep ralley, and the dance. Dan Metz and Nina Diaz reign over spirit week as the weekend activies progressed Holli Neeb screams Beaver Dam it as she burns rubber on Big-Wheel Boulevard.

Perci Petroleum hair Petrolungo twin brother to Geraldo Revolting, on a night out to stalk the ladies. Saga runs out of spoons.

It was a season of many hopes and dreams for the cross-country team. For Kristi Elms it was the final year of eligibility. She went to state and finished 49th out of 85 racers.

68

The cross-country season was an exciting and fun experience for me. Going to the state meet will be an experience I will never forget, even though I did not place well. A lot of progress and potential was shown by everyone on the team and next season promises to be a good one. (Paul Walter)

Varsity Field Hockey The Varsity Field Hockey Team was phenomenal this year. We worked with an undying spirit to earn our 6-6-0 con ference record. (Hey football, what was yours? By the way you still owe us a pizza dinner.) Our captains Tracy Kearns and Kaiya Rainbolt were truly an inspiration. Through Coach Diane Alpaugh's dedication we achieved a personal best. This year's team won more games than any other field hockey team has in over thirty years at Wayland Academy. Seniors Tracy Kearns, Kaiya Rainbolt, Lexi Johnson, Kara Nesse, Jacqueline Nims, Wendy Beers, Nina Diaz, Alex Gillen and Karyn Fechner will be greatly missed next year. Congratulations to all. Best of luck to all the returning players. WE ARE TRULY AWESOME WOMEN!

FOOTBALL The Wayland Football team had a difficult season, but they seemed to pull it all together at the end of the year. The highlight of the season was the 14-0 win over St. John's Military Academy. The team elected Peter Geis and David Cowart as their MVP's and David Cowart and Jason Brandt were named all conference for their defensive positions. Over all the team will now have very fond memories of playing together this season.

The team gathered around after a victory.

The Brandt brothers, Jason (Varsity) and Jamie (J.V.) show off their stuff.

"Although we didn't have an excellent record, we had a lot of fun, and everyone had a chance to play."-Matt Martin

Soccer: making the goal. 76

The team walks off the field triumphantly after yet another big win.

Big Red "State Fever" The Big Red soccer team had an incredibly great season this year. The team made it through the season with only one conference loss. The team then advanced to the state finals. The squad lost in the quarterfinals of the tournament to Green Bay Premontre who ended up taking second in the state. The group played as a team the whole year and this is the soul reason that they got the chance to play in the tournament.

Steven Lee and Dan Metz walk back to the center of the field after a Wayland goal.

GIRLS' TENNIS "During tennis season, I saw a side of people that I never thought I'd see. It was definately hilarious", said Robin Reuthe.

Emily Tessmer says that, "although tennis proved to be a competative sport, the unity between junior varsity and varsity at the matches was exciting, and great fun".

Coach Ellis is again proud of Heather Genereaux's performance in her match as Liz Pechous works her way to another victory.

BOYS' BASKETBALL The Wayland Basketball Team ended their season with a 9-11 record. There were several close games, one of which took place on parent, mentor recognition night. The game was tied until the end of the game when a free- throw was made and the game was won. The season showed that the Wayland team had talent and used it to the best of their ability. The team's star senior guard Scott Swatalla was selected to the WISSA all star team. "It was a interesting season," said Todd Ziels.

WAYLAND CHEERLEADERS! Two, four, six, eight- who do we appreciate? Wayland cheerleaders! This season, the cheerleaders supported Wayland and its athletes with undying enthusiasm. They brought crowd spirit to an all t ime high with cheers such as "Boogie Down" and "Shake That Skirt". The Varsity Squad, comprised of T ara Driver, Jacqueline Nims, Emily Tessmer, and Melissa Leyva, and the Junior Varsity Squad, comprised of Nancy Yates, Laura Krebs, and Niambi Baile, combined to perfect an incredible competition routine that drove everyone crazy! Miss Esterholm, the sponsor and coach of the girls, commented, "This squad is the best that I have been involved with in my years at Wayland." Senior cheerleader Jac queline Nims commented, "I have absolutely adorded being a part of Wayland cheer leading for the past two years. All of the hard work that we have put into it has really paid off. It's a fabulous feeling!"

Hockey

Wayland's goalie Jim Wells makes another game winning save.

The Wayland ice hockey program continued to grow from its low point a few seasons ago. The 89-90 squad had a better amount of talent, but had to deal with a smaller roster than the previous season. The team was exciting to watch; several of the losses were close. Lack of depth hurt. Two year letter winners Pete Cueter (captain), and Dave Mueller (assistant captain), formed the nucleus of the returning squad along with third year letter winners Blake Hayunga and Jim Wells. The bulk of the team's scorin was done by Boyd Craven (assistant captain), and J.P. Cheret. Younger players had to live up to varsity expectation and developed very nicely: Mahin Samadani, Jim Wirtz, Pat Hegeman, Alex Brady, Rocky Hensel, Dean Bedford, and Jon Strong. Senior Bob Denvir joined the squad as a first year player and became a candidate for most improved player.

I learned how to score lots of goals playing hockey here at Wayland.

I like being on the Wayland hockey team almost as much as being on the Wayland Chomp team.

Boyd Craven skates down ice waiting for a pass.

Peter Cueter skates as he spies the open shot. Boyd Craven is given an opportunity for a fast break and he takes it.

SKI TEAM Wayland Ski Team On the ski team this year, there was fierce competition not only with opponents, but there were many battles for position on the team itself. The team this year was full of talent. Due to the stability of the team, they held off many opponents and won many meets due to the full depth of all six of the varsity skiers. Being the defending conference champions, many opposing teams wanted to beat Wayland extremely bad. Due to the fierce skiing by # 1 skier Brain Haggerty, and #2 skier Fletcher White, the team took a strong second in the conference meet. Brian and Fletcher were both chosen as all conference skiers, and went on to race at the state meet with the rest of the team. # 1 skier Brian Haggerty and # 2 skier Fletcher White tear through the gates during practice, as they ready themselves for the next meet. They are both looking to race in the # 1 spot in the upcoming race.

Brad Karl skiis safely between the two set courses because he can't seem to make it through either of them without falling.

For all you people still having trouble with understanding how to use a simple little mail box, here are the easy step-by-step simplified instructions. Reposition your bi-pedular extremities to a lower vertical position of the folcrum. Periodically manipulate your penta-outgrowth bodily unit to a tangible section of the rotating device. In a clockwise motion circulate the cylinder's nozzle until reaching a uniform near resemblance to the premier amount specifically requested. Unrecirculate a degree of 2 pi radians or 360 degrees. Continue this action toward an identicality figure to the secondary units of the combinationary sequence counterclockwise. In a opposing motion, remanipulate the control unit to precisely position with the figure in position. Apply forceful pressure outward to the hinged plate. That's all you have to do.
