'Pillars
Here we stand beneath the pillars. They build our character, increase our knowledge, strengthen our health, and guide us to the light of service. They protect us, as we do them. These pillars are the central theme of our yearbook this year and rightfully so, considering that for one hundred and six years they have represented Wayland. These are the monuments to right, standing both day and night, but these pillars no matter how strong, and how old, do not mean a thing without all of us standing beneath them. "I understand how it was, and at times how it will be, but never how it is ... " -F. Casperson Above: Brittajohnson, Brittany Stallone, Erik Kuffner, and Sara Brenman. Above right: Whitney Davis. Orientation Orientation is one of the most memorable first experiences as a Wayland student. New students discuss what they found the scariest or on which event they got the most bruises. After spending two days with the group in close physical contact new friendships are bound to form . The returning students who participate also enjoy the fun. "The whole process brought back old memories of myself as a freshman, who had to go through the process, feeling the strange mixture of exhileration and fear. As a senior, I led my own group and became the person I had looked up to, " remarks an old student. The weekend became a time to reflect upon the past and to build upon the future. The first few steps are difficult to overcome but once they are conquered the journey only gets better.
Stephanie Fisher looks a bit worried as Dave Muehling, Lisa Anderson, and Michelle Kolpin get into the swing of things.

Action
Weekend Another great Action Weekend took place this year and it will not be the last one. Besides "Rafting the Wolf' and "Rock Climbing" there were many other projects this year with a great number of participants. The variety of the projects and the good weather contributed to the success of the weekend. The goal, to fight the homesickness was successful. People were so enthusiastic that they had no time during the two days to call their parents to tell them of their first days at Wayland. From both sides, the faculty and the students, this weekend was described as one of the best ever.
The enthusiasm of all the participants was a major factor for the success of Action Weekend where first good friends were often made. Mr. J. Schlicher and Mr. Schneider were also in a festive mood, hiding behind masks for unknown reasons. Kevin Oh and Alex Yu enjoyed riding very much, while other people experienced a few problems, like Karl Berger and Joon Kim trying to pass under the bridge with their canoe on "Makin' the Mecan" .
8
"Makin' the Mecan" was a favorite. People enjoyed the canoeing. "It was really relaxing and a great break from school" said Susan Mittler. It was a weekend that students would definitely do again . The Athletic Extravaganza group also enjoyed their weekend.
This year's "Hoofin' It" was a great success and people really enjoyed it. Amy Blomquist said, " it was great but unfortunately the weather was sunny but slightly cold. The worst thing was the lack of showers!" The indoor weekend that Toni Bislew and her group participated in, "Murals and Graphics" painted the Union and gave it a totally new " outfit".
9
"For Rock Climbing we left very early Saturday morning, at 6:45 A.M. and started climbing about 9:30. Saturday night we stayed at a campsite with about five cabins. We ate steaks and a few of us went out to a field and layed on a blanket and watched the stars. Sunday we climbed at a different site and left about 2:30. My weekend was really fun because it was my first time climbing and I learned a lot. I found out that climbing is just as much mental as it is physical." Kim Turner Susan Park and Paul Bostian give a helping hand to fellow rock climbers, while Enrique Arguello looks on . Above: Karin Larsen, Courtney McDonald, Curtis Low, and john Wenner (next page) hang in the balance.

'• I Michelle Kolpin, Elizabeth McNally, Bob Finnigan, and Ryan Tucker prepare to ride the Elroy and Sparta bike trail. Virawat Dangsubutra and Elizabeth McNally stop to enjoy some of the scenery along the way.
"I went biking on the Elroy and Sparta trail for Action Weekend. I went about 61 miles in two days. It was a pretty easy ride because I bike a lot, but it was fun. You go through three railroad tunnels on the trail and you have to use a flashlight because it is so dark. Saturday night was really fun, we sat in a tent and told stories. It started to pour!" Ryan Tucker

Spirit Week Spirit week was a lot of fun this year. The week's events included Clash Day, Powder Puff Football, Hats and Shades Day, Red and White Day, class murals, rock painting, pie-eating contest and the class skits. The week ended with Fall Parents Weekend and the Homecoming Dance. It certainly proved to be a "spirited" week! Below: Mayette Manuel, Ericka Horne, Saori Ueki, Michelle Kolpin, Emily Tessmer, and Marisa Tews show their idea of Spirit Week fashion. Right: Graham Hick, Dai Nishino, Mark Tanner, and Masahiko Miyamoto try to make us believe they are wearing nothing out of the ordinary. Amy Blomquist, Jody Conlan, and Whitney Davis are dressed in their best. (That is their Clash Day best.)
15
This year Spirit Week accomplished the goal of getting everyone fired-up! Mr. VanHaren started the week out with an assembly that really got the faculty and the students warmed-up. Below: The Homecoming Court included Steve Baumgartner, Sheffia Randall, Rocky Hensel, Jenny Karl, Boyd Craven, Simca Harris, Greg Toledo, Ashley Ost, Dan Candee, and Celenda Wagenknecht. This year was one of the most outstanding years for golf at Wayland in recent years, coach Jim Borrud goes even as far as stating that "this varsity group of players are the most gifted young men I ever had the pleasure to work with." The team won conference this year, placed second in regionals and sixth overall in the state. The Big Red were lead by their number one player, senior and two time team M.V.P., Boyd Craven who played the number two position. He played aggressively all year and proved to be a major factor in the teams success. Matt Keil filled the number three position and played his strongest golf at the state meet. Fourth and Fifth positions were played by Fred Webster and John Triller. Boyd Craven, Mark Craven and Fred Webster were named all conference.

'BoBs' 'Basketball The boys' basketball team played hard, and played together, all year. Unfortunately, with a squad very short of players, they were not able to win many games. Still, they never gave up, proving that sportmanship, team play, good effort, and having fun are what this sport was all about in 90-91. -Coach Liddicoat-

The hockey team had their best season in years, currently 11-8-1. Boyd Craven scored the most goals, with assists by J.P. Cheret and Dave Mueller. Jon Strong improved as goalie and Blake Hayunga as defense. At X-mas break we were 3-3. Contributions were made by Ryan O'Sheridan, Jeff Livesey and Jim Wirtz, whose defense play improved tremendously. The team had great fun this year. We were contenders for the conference title right to the last game. Our trip to Illinois was highlighted by attending the NHL All-Star game (made possible by the Wirtzs). It was a fun year that was a long time coming! -Coach Boucher-
Over the past 2 years Wayland's hockey program has had a lot of ups and downs. But this year the team had a unique chemistry with fierce offense and stymying defense which made the season fairly successful and enjoyable. It wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for Coach Boucher's hard work and dedication. To the guys- Just remember, don't write a check with your mouth that your body can't cash. For twenty-six years, Mrs. Koehne has given countless hours of dedicated service to Wayland. She has done this not just as a teacher and mentor, but as a friend to many. Her love of music has not only encouraged students to learn, but it has brought about a new inspiration to create. A former student was quoted as saying, "As I teach piano and perform, I hear Mrs. Koehne's words and encouragement. She was the most enduring part of my education at Wayland." Mrs. Koehne amazes us all with her outside involvements also. She can be seen, or should we say heard at St. Patrick's Catholic Church; the Beaver Dam Oratorio Society, and the Beaver Dam Community Theatre. She also helps out immensely with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra. This just goes to prove that Mrs. Koehne has always found time for everyone, be it her students, her cohorts, or her friends . Her love can be felt by all of us. How can any one of us ever thank her enough? We don't know, but we do know that her caring smile, her kind words and her love of music as well as her love of people will be missed more than we can say. This is to you Mrs. Koehne, for your unselfish dedication to Wayland. Thank You!

Another year is over and though we went through some rough times, we didn't cry alone. We went through some painful times but we suffered for one another. We went through some happy times and we shared the joy. We went through some humorous times and of course we laughed together. There were the times when we fell in love, sometimes it was with each other, sometimes it fell apart. The thing we should all be sure of is that the ride was well worth the fall . Somethimes we were selfish, not only selfish with each other, but with ourselves. The thing we should remember is we were always there for each other, through good and bad. We shall now leave trust with each other to always be there, no matter where we are.
