The freshman class of 1954 started out with twenty nine members. Sixteen of us are still working together with the same spirit which helped us to win the Homecoming skits our freshman year. Never before was there a freshman class with so much spirit. We had a class party and we sponsored unsurpassable activities such as our " Fall Fiesta ." We had representatives on the varsity athletic teams, both boys' and girls' sports , and on all musical activities and the honor roll. The leaders of this unforgettable year were Hans Kraut, Sue Hicks, Gretchen Wernecke, and Ann Hoyer.
The Centennial year, the sophomores were led by Bud Schoen, Jim Hawes, Kathy Schnur, and Jim Hinkson. There was much work for us to do to make the centennial year a success and to start our fund raising campaign for the Junior Prom, which was still over a year away. The Sophomore Carnival was one of the best activities of the year as there were many new booths and a new type of Spook House.
The Junior Prom was the big event of our junior year. The theme was " How Deep is the Ocean ." The hours put into 1he work for this prom cannot be compiled, especially with the extra hours spent by the town students and those who drew up the plans . Classes for the years to come will have a hard time giving a more beautiful prom . Another event which rivaled the prom in importance was the arrival of our class rings. Jim Hawes, Jon Labahn, Sue Hicks, and Sunny Soldwedel led us in this all -important year .
In our last year, our "big year," we were led by Bob Smith, Ted Landon, Sue Reader, and Sally Barnhart. Our class again won first place in the Homecoming skills, and bo1h of our effigies also placed . The "Crystal Ball," college boards, college applications, Ice Carnival , and commencement were all main topics of conversation this year, but uppermost in all our minds was , " What does next year hold in store for us?"
As we all put our high school years behind us, we can only hope that the next f~ years will be as rewarding as our last four years have been.

JUNIORS Page Th irty-three
When the Junior class began the 1956'57 term, their thoughts immediately turned to preparation for the busy Homecoming weekend. Many new and clever ideas were suggested for both the skit and effigies. The plot for the skit centered around a typical Wayland day. The theme was set to the tunes of such old favorites as, "T~e Bells are Ringing" and "If I Could Be With You." The words, written by members of the class, proved to be very appropriate and entertaining. After the exciting weekend all thoughts and ideas were turned towards earning money for Prom. The class sold popcorn and candy at movies held in the girl's gym, and 1hey also sponsored many of the Saturday night activities. Following Christmas Juniors placed their orders A majority of the girls chose while the boys varied in the

During Spring Vacation many of the Juniors went on the Washington trip. It lasted for ten days and included meetings with Senators Wiley and Dirkson. Philadelphia, Valley Forge, and Richmond were only a few of the various cities which were visited during the trip. Returning to school the Juniors found themselves faced with the big problems of planning the Prom. Many students sketched Junior class officers left to right: ideas and presented them to the class. After Ken Keller, vice路president; Betsy Rumpel , secretary; Judy Griffin , president; many suggestions and much thought, the Dennis Mietzel, treasurer. theme "Out of This World' was chosen The decorations consisted of foiled planets, stars, and painted murals depicting life in outer space. Sophomore class officers left to right: Dean Eyerly, vice-president; Kathy Homuth, secretary; Fred Flom, president; Judy Jensen , treasurer.
This Year's Sophomores have welcomed many new members to their class, who have swelled their ranks to seventy-three. They do, however, know they have quality as well as quantity. The year began with the election of class officers, namely: Fred Flam, president; Dean Eyerly, vice-president; Kathy Homuth, secretary; and treasurer, Judy Jansen. Much promising talent was shown by the many sophomores who took part in the Homecoming skit and the "Roundy Minstrel Show." Their effigy, an enormous skunk, created quite a sensation and won first prize. Besides being well-re!Jresented on the Honor Roll, the class contributed to the various championship athletic teams, both Varsity and J.V . The Sophs were responsible for numerous enjoyable activities, including a revival of the "Gay Twenties" and the Sophomore Carnival, a bright tradition with its gay booths. The class advisors, Miss Klosterman and Mr. Larimore, were wonderful and unfailing in giving of their time and guidance. It is evident that plenty of class spirit and hard work have made this year a success, and the Sophomores are looking forward to making their third year at Wayland their biggest and best.

The freshman class, led by Perry Hogan, president; Charles Wachs, vicepresident; Tish Herbst, secretary; and Sally Cross, treasurer, promises to make Wayland sit up and take notice . This year the class won third prize in the homecoming skit, an original western saga, and their guillotine took first prize in the effigies. The Freshman class is well represented in the Honor Roll, and many of its members show great promise in athletics. The chief activity of the Freshmen, the Sadie Hawkins Day, came off in high style, and for an hour on Friday the campus was just a blur of flying feet as the "Sadie's" of Wayland chased after their hapless "Li'l Abners ." It was all in the spirit of fun, and the weekend was a big success in the eyes of all .

The oldest and largest organization on the Wayland campus is the Y.W.C.A. The leadership of this club for the year 1956-1957 rested on the shoulders of Jo lly Hogan, President; Marty Engle, Vice President; Kathy Schnur, Secretary; and Linda Forsgren, Treasurer. Miss Marion E. Mitchel l was "the Y.W.C.A.'s advisor. The majority of the members of Y.W. serve on one of the many committtees: hospitality, music, ways and means, social service, world relations, service, poster, bulletin boards, clubrooms, social, and town relations. These committees do everything from planning the weekly program and dances to making nutcups and tray planning the weekly program and dances to making nutcups and tray favors for the hospitals. The chairmen of the various committees comprise the Y.W.C.A. Cabinet. In the fal l the Y.W. co-sponsors with the "W" Club the first activity of the year, the "Mixer." Another highlight of the fall is the beautiful candlelight Recognition service in which al l the new members join. The Nativity Pageant and the March of Dimes benefit Masquerade are two of the main events of the winter term. The Mock Wedding and the spring Installation Banquet headline the spring season. An all year project is the support of a Korean War orphan. To earn money for her, the Y.W. sponsored several bake sales and put on a clothing drive in the girls' dormitory. Page Sixty

Approximately 27 boys turned out on September 4, one week before school started . As each boy received his equipment, none had a single thought he was going to be part of a team that was to make history . In eight games Coach Meyer's team wsa undefeated, a record which included one non-conference game and seven straight victories in the Midwest Prep Conference. Thus, for the first time in the history of Wayland an undefeated team has been produced; one which, in the process making a clean sweep of the Conference Championship, also set an all-time scoring record for a single conference game. This was a 69-0 rout of Wisconsin Lutheran in the Homecoming game. After only two weeks of preparation, Coach Meyer sent his team, untried in actual play, against St. Mary's Springs of Fond du Lac. Poor ball handling and bad timing marked this non-conference game which saw Wayland come out on top 14-13. Fred Flom, sophomore halfback, blasted through the left tackle for the first Wayland score and Jim Hawes , senior quarter-back, tossed a scoring pass to speedster Mickey Kay for the second counter. Flom and Bill Kellogg , senior fullback, racked up the extra points on plunges. A valiant goal-line stand with four minutes left in the game preserved the victory for the Redmen.

The second game of the young season was against the Big Red's arch rival, Milwaukee Country Day. In a hard fought game, the Wayland gridders, led by Hawes, who scored two touchdowns, ground out a decisive 21-6 victory. Jon Labahn, senior halfback, romped 32 yards for Wayland's third score. All three extra points were made on plunges by Kellogg and Bill Shuck, senior halfback, and a conversion by Hawes. Showing up in the strong Wayland defense were Bob Smith, Phil Reader, Jim Hinkson, MiCkey Kay, and Dennis Mietzel. The next four games fell in succession : Milwaukee Lutheran High School was next and they were quickly disposed of with a 25-6 victory; Lake Forest Academy fell to the Big Red under a 27-12 defeat; against Racine Lutheran High School, Wayland again won by a 27-13 victory; and the last game before Homecoming saw Wayland at Watertown where their si xth victory was taken to the tune of 51-0 over the Northwestern Preps. Homecoming weekend at Wayland rolled around, and with all the gala festivities came a 69-0 rout of Wisconsin Lutheran High School by the Wayland gridders . Quarterback Hawes led the scoring parade with three TD's while Shuck racked up two. Scoring once each were, Kellogg, Meitzel, Quails, Kay, Labahn, and Pat Hogan . Eleven touchdown s, a conference record, were scored by Wayland, despite the use of 38 players.

After a week of careful preparation, the Wayland team was ready for the big game. It was the big game because they were to play Milwaukee University School who also was undefeated. Groomed 1o near perfection by their excellent coaches, Marty Meyer and Bart Chase, the Big Red came through in fine fashion, crushing M.U.S. 35-14. Thus, for the first time in the history of the school, Wayland had an undefeated football team, sole owners of the Conference Championship. Kellogg played an outstanding game, scoring three times and starring on defense as well. Hawes handled the Big Red gridders expertly, passing to Kay for a TD and place kicking two extra points. Labahn took a cros~ - buck 18 yJrds for the other score. Wayland speedy backfield, running behind a hard hitting line, broke the game open in the fourth quarter with long gains by Kellogg and Labahn on end runs, and pitchouts and burst up the middle by Shuck. Kellogg ended the game on a spectacular note, taking a screen pass from Hawes on his own 53 yard line and galloped for his third
TD of the day. Members of the Wayland team received gold football charms for winning the Conference Championship, along with a two-foot trophy and a large picture of the entire squad both of which were proudly placed in the Trophy Room. At the end of the most successful season ever known by Wayland, the squad chose Jim Hawes, Bill Kellogg, and Bob Smith as their co-captains. Bob Smith was also voted the most valuable player of the year. The coaches of the conference chose seven of the hard working gridders to the All-Conference team; these were Jim Hinkson, Jim Hawes, Bill Kellogg, Bob Smith, Mickey Kay, Dave Fitchett, and Dave Link. There were a number of stars on this famous Wayland team, but they as well as all who witnessed the games, know full well that the season could not have been as highly successful with the faithful cooperation and the hard work of the entire squad.
J.V. FOOTBALL Wayland's Junior Varsity football team compiled a record of 4 victories and 3 defeats this season. Victories came over Roosevelt High School of Fond du Lac, 7-6; Juneau High School, 27-7; Lake Forest Academy, 12-0; and Watertown Preps, 14-7. The three defeats came at the hands of Country Day, 25-0; Racine Lutheran, 14-13; and St. Mary's Springs, 12-0. son provided most of the scoring punch for Coach Schur's JayVee eleven. Bill Sheldon, Paul Cromheecke, and Jim Purnell rounded out the backfield with Pat Hogan coming down from the varsity to play sometimes. The Line consisted of Steve Miller, Dale Marcus, Tom Eads, Dave Loucks, and Jack Barber, while Walter Streit teamed up with Canick at end. Injuries kept Dick Freeman and Ralph Owen out for most of the season, but when they did get into the fray, they showed a lot of promise as future varsity players.

Soon after school began this fall, the girls' hockey team commenced practice. After a few eliminations the final team was ready to set to work. This year's hockey squad was coached by Miss Ellen Barber and Mrs. Bart Chase. The fir st game scheduled was on October 6, and MUS met our team here. The final results were losses for both the first and second team s, although the scores were very close. On October 20, the "Little Red" had a playday at Milwaukee. The second team was victorious over MUS and Whiefish Bay, while the first team defeated Milwaukee Jr. Hockey Club and Washington Park of Racine . Homecoming weekend the girls found them se lves faced by the Wau pun team. With the spirit of the weekend behind them, both teams were again proud victors. November 10, the girls met their rivals, the Downer team. Despite a hard fight, both Downer teams remained undefeated, as usual. At the conclusion of the season, the girls wish to thank Miss Barber and Mrs. Chase for their time and patient coaching.

The first team winning while the second team was defeated. With a few weeks practice behind them, the teams' next match was Wisconsin Lutheran on February 9. Both teams trounced the opposing teams with high scores. February 25 the Wayland team found themselves as hostesses to Kemper, Downer, and MUS. The first thing Saturday morning the first team played MUS in the big gym, while the second team played Downer. Both teams lost. The second game the first team met Downer and again lost. The second team defeated Kemper, however. The final game the first team defeated Kemper by a narrow margin in a thrilling game. The second team lost their final game to MUS. No sooner had the last of the football equipment been packed away than the Wayland sports program went indoors to the hardwood courts and basketball. The week of November sixth was the starting point of a long season to end in March, and liftle did the hopefuls that turned out for the first call know of the succes that lay before the team. After several days of workouts the roster was cut to include twelve boys.
on consecutive nights, 73-58 and 50-39. Milwaukee Country Day threw a monkey wrench in the works by tipping the Redmen in a game which saw three of the boys receive ankle injuries. The conference race was tighte11ed the following weekend as the Wayland cagers beat Wisconsin Lutheran 52-50 and the league-leading Lake Forest 59-55. After absorbing another non-conference loss to St. Mary's Springs, the team avenged an early season loss to Country Day by whipping the Cougars 64-60. Coupled with losses by Lake Forest and Racine, this win pulled the Big Red to within one-half game of the top in the conference standings.
The season opened at Wisconsin Lutheran on November 30, and the Redmen got off to a good start by taking the game 65-57. The following weekend Milwaukee University School provided Wayland with their second victory 74-59, but a red-hot club from Lake Forest took the Big Red to the cleaners, 76-56. Northwestern preps fell next, 67-47, and then Racine Luthern put the skids under the Redmen to the tune of 59-55. With the Christmas holidays coming up, the team dropped a non-conference game to St. John's of Little Chute. Back from vacation the Big Red lost to St. Mary's of Fond du Lac and then re-entered conference play by nailing Milwaukee Lutheran and Racine Lutheran
Following a loss to Northwestern Preps, the view for the title hopes of the Waylandites looked rather dim. However, the team closed the season with victories over M.U.S. and Milwaukee Lutheran. After the last game was over, a telephone call from Watertown informed the Redmen that Northwestern had upset Lake Forest, and this loss had given the Big Red a share of the conference title. Hard work and good basketball had paid off as the team went on to win the tournament and capture its second championship for the year .

The loss of the JayVee's high scorer jolted them for a three game loss, but led by Schoon, Purnell, and Hoffmaster they regained their stride and took the next three from Milwaukee Country Day, 32 to 18; Wisconsin Lutheran, 40 to 31; and Lake Forest, 28 to 23. St. Mary's dropped the Junior Varsity, 33 to 47, but the season was finish~d successfully as the last four teams went down to defeat - Milwaukee Country Day, 49 to 32; Roosevelt Junior High School, 39 to 37; Milwaukee University School 27 to 24; and Milwaukee Lutheran, 62 to 33. We also lost one 14 to 20 to Monona Grove. Smith pinned his man in 13 seconds and Link and Eyerly won on decisions. Northwestern Preps avenged their earlier defeat by beating us 17 to 19. In the return match with Monona Grove, we lost again 13 to 25. The highlight of the season was a win over the Beloit College Freshmen, 21 to 14. Bob Smith wrestled Colin Stetson, a Wayland graduate last year and the 1955 and 1956 Wrestling captain. Stetson won by a decision, but is was a hard fought match.
