Stanley police officer receives awards for heroism By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Stanley police officer Matthew Curfman was recently honored for his role in rescuing two people from a house fire. The awards included a Proclamation from the Town of Stanley and the Medal of Valor from the Stanley Police

Department. Both accolades were given to Curfman at a recent meeting of the Stanley town council. The incident that Curfman was involved in took place on Oct. 30 at 603 Summerow Rd. just outside the Stanley city limits. When Curfman, who had already worked 11 hours that day, arrived at the

scene, the rear of the house was ablaze and two elderly folks were trapped inside. Nonetheless, Curfman sprang into action. He kicked in the door, entered the house and took one person to safety. Soon, firefighters from Alexis VFD came up. Curfman, without any breathing apparatus, reentered the

Stuart Cramer students among those chosen for state honors chorus Four students from Gaston County Schools were chosen to participate in the North Carolina Music Educators Association’s (NCMEA) high school honors chorus and two of them are from Stuart Cramer High in Cramerton. Nate Kang and Tristan Nogueira of Stuart W. Cramer High School, Isaac Londeree of Ashbrook High School, and Erin Watson of Forestview High School sang in the honors chorus concert

at the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem on November 7. Auditions were recorded and submitted electronically. Approximately 750 students sent in an audition video, but only 176 students from across the state were selected. Ashbrook High School choral teacher Philip Biedenbender said it takes a great deal of courage to stand up and share your voice, knowing that someone is listening to and judging your performance. “All auditionees

deserve a round of applause for putting in the time and the effort required for honors chorus preparation,” said Biedenbender. “Unfortunately, the NCMEA just can’t take everyone.” Forestview chorus teacher Steven Austin praised Watson for being selected as a member of the honors chorus. “Erin is incredibly hardworking and has dedicated four years to the choral program. According to the proclamation, a local fire chief remarked soon after the scene“Had it not been for the quick action of Officer Curfman this event could have had a tragic outcome.” A firefighter had this comment- “To see a local officer who is willing to disregard his own safety in a situation his profession normally doesn’t see, and to stick it out in an IDLS situation (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Safety) until he was sure they were out safe, is true definition of a hero.” Stanley mayor Steven Denton told Curfman-- “I want to personally thank you for your heroic efforts in saving the lives of the people caught in the fire. Readers of the BannerNews will recall last week’s edition with the story of Minnie Grier of Belmont who had turned 100 years old on November 30th. Well, just a few days after that, another Belmont resident, Polly Lowe, also topped the century mark on December 4th and here’s her story. Like many Belmont seniors who have lived here over the decades, the textile industry was woven into just about every aspect of Lowe’s young life. Her mom and dad, John and Lilly Smith, both worked in the mills. The family lived in the Eagle Mill area. Over the years, Polly took her own turn in textiles doing a variety of jobs including that of seamstress. See POLLY, Page 5

R EFLECTIONS Santa comes in an Amazon truck

Electrickery Well, last Sunday morning started off as usual. I got up and first thing swilled a big glug of mouthwash in my craw so as to avoid depleting the ozone layer with my breath. Then, well, you know what then, afterwards I took a shower and put on my uniform of dirty jeans and a 20 year old sweatshirt and booted up the computer. I never did figure out what caused the outage, but what followed was over three hours of another way of living. First of all, it started getting cold in the house. Not really cold but the reassuring hum of the heat pump was absent and it just seemed cold. Next, the computer screen was black. The TV was black, tunes from WDAV on the stereo were gone. Electric lights were dark. The refrigerator was silent… Oh, Lord, I said to myself don’t let the cornucopia in there go bad. In short, the overall effect of powerlessness was… silence. What to do? Well, I sat in a sunny window and looked at magazines for a while until that became boring. Then I read the newest edition of Agricultural Review newspaper until that became boring. I gazed out the window until that became boring. Then I looked in my book of ancient Egyptian art until I was bored with that. I walked around the house because it was too cold to go outside. I picked up the dust covered guitar I have been trying in vain for two years to learn how to play and dusted it off and strummed (off-key) a while and sang (off-key) a couple of tunes I made up – “A Six Pack Today and a Heartache Tomorrow” and “Fatback Ain’t Streak O Lean” and “Delicious Tremblins”, and “The Art Shoemaker Shimmy” (hey Art!). But that too became boring. I pulled out a legal pad and jotted some notes for my next project for Our State magazine and that too became boring. In short, I was bored. And cold. Time dragged on and no electricity. One hour became two, then two became three. Finally, after about three and a half hours- the lights came back on. The heat pump fired up and began spewing its warmth. The stereo came on and Rachmaninoff’s Sonata for Cello and Piano filled the room. The computer came on! Google was back! The refrigerator hummed ... our food was saved! All was right with the modern, electricity-driven, world. Later I thought about how dependent we are, not just physically but emotionally as well, on having most things in our life dependent on flipping a switch or pushing a button. What would life be like without electricity? Simpler no doubt, but could we really cope with it? At least in my case probably not.

Belmont City Council news At its December 6 meeting, the Belmont City Council approved the South Fork Parkway, a new street that will connect Armstrong Ford Road to Nixon Road and ultimately to Tucker Road and South Point Road, to be built as a city street. The street was originally planned as a state road, but the NCDOT requested changes to the design of this street that would have delayed its construction. If the street were to have remained an NCDOT road, it may not be built until at least 2040-2050. By accepting it as a city street built consistent with the City Council’s longstanding vision this street will be built in the new few years by private developers. City Council approved a capital project ordinance for the Abbey Creek Greenway. The approval of this project ordinance does not obligate funding for the construction of this project, but allows for

the design of the greenway to continue moving forward. The project construction budget for this project will not be determined until it goes out for bid. City Council approved funding for design and engineering services for two pedestrian crosswalks and pedestrian signals on Catawba Street and Keener Blvd (Park Street). These improvements will allow pedestrians a safer option when crossing Keener Blvd (Park Street) from the Chronicle District to the River District in East Belmont. City Council approved an adjustment to the total budget for the Skateboard Park after the State of NC allocated $150,000 towards the project in the 2021-2022 State budget. With the $150,000 contribution the total project budget is $415,000. Construction on this project is scheduled to start in January.

Luke 1 The Birth of Jesus Foretold 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

Big and small By Dennis Siracusa Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” How many of us breeze through that verse; don’t slow down to consider its implications or search what God is revealing. In the beginning God! Throughout history men’s finite minds have fabricated idols and false gods; fictional notions like Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades (supposed god brothers), or Apollos, Themis, or a pantheon of gods visualized as half human/half animal depending on their specialized capabilities. All are polytheistic substitutes for worshipping our one true God. In Isaiah 43:10 NIV our God tells us “Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.” And our God is not restricted to the ocean or a mountaintop. Jesus Christ is infinite and measures the entire universe He created, with His hand. Isaiah 40:12 NIV reveals “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?” Our God’s throne is outside our observable Whirlpool Galaxy over 31 million light years away, and He is eternal, self-existent, present everywhere, all knowing and infinitely powerful; and …. He is mindful of us. In Psalm 8:4 NIV king David asks “what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” And “God created the heavens and the earth.” Think about that! God created us and our earth in a planetary system we call our Solar System after the name of our sun “SOL;” and He nestled us between two outer

rings of our Milky Way Galaxy, a full 93 million miles from our sun so we don’t burn up. Our Solar System is about 1 light year in diameter (5.88 Dennis Siracusa trillion miles) and is so small compared to our galaxy, among billions of known galaxies, that our solar system would appear the size of a quarter compared to the whole north American continent. Yes God is huge and we are very small and yet our God is mindful of us. When we look at a clear night sky we see lots of stars flaring up. They seem quiet. Oh we hear crickets, cicadas, and air planes but we don’t hear the stars because they are very far away. Starlight takes years to reach here and all stars are suns similar to ours. The light and heat from our sun (our closest star) takes 8 minutes 20 seconds to get here. Our sun is 100 times the size of earth with a raging 10,000 degree surface temperature. All stars are similar and our God breathed them into existence, maintains them and knows them each by name. Our God is huge and we are very very small. And yet He is ever present, loves us and wants relationship with us. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” These days much uncertainty abounds. Let’s invite Jesus Christ into our life and ask Him to order our lives while there is time. Can you imagine eternity with God?

Unlike Watson, Londeree began singing in the sixth grade at Holbrook Middle School. “I initially wanted to be in the band, but I didn’t want my parents to pay for an instrument so I chose chorus instead,” said Londeree, who credits his middle school chorus teacher for his love of singing. “Music is the best way to change, provoke, and convey emotion. It connects us as people in a way that nothing else can.” Londeree said having the opportunity to work in a state choir with other talented students was a rewarding experience. “I absolutely loved it, and maybe I will have an opportunity to do it again as a senior.” Nogueira’s love for music goes back to when he took chorus at Belmont Middle School.

“I have been singing for as long as I could speak. It was something that I only did in the car,” explained Nogueira, who also has performed in many school theater productions. “I never took voice lessons, and only began singing at family events once I joined my middle school chorus.” During his time at the NCMEA conference, Nogueira was reminded that a singer must have fun before music can become great. Music has always been an escape for Kang when life wasn’t always going his way. “Music kept my mind at bay and allowed me to bring my mind and body back in harmony,” said Kang. “Music is life, and it’s all around us.” Kang added, “The relationships made at the honors chorus clinic show just how simply knowing your true potential and that of others

around you creates a mutual respect among fellow singers and music enthusiasts alike.” This year’s NCMEA conference was a two-day event, and students spent one day rehearsing for a concert on the final day. Each year, a nationally-acclaimed guest conductor spends time with the students, preparing them for their performance. Dr. Julie Yu of Kansas State University served as the 2021 guest conductor. At Kansas State, she is responsible for overseeing the undergraduate choral ensembles and the master’s degree in choral music program. In addition to learning songs and preparing for the concert, students had the opportunity to learn about music programs at colleges and universities and fellowship with others who are interested in choral music.

Gaston County Schools receives $20,000 grant from Duke Energy Gaston County Schools is one of six local organizations to receive an impact grant from Duke Energy. The $20,000 award will be

used to support the school district’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education efforts.

An awards presentation was held November 11 at Gaston College. Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker attended the ceremony to accept the award. Dr. Booker said, “We appreciate Duke Energy’s efforts to support STEM education in Gaston County Schools. Because of our ongoing partnership with Duke Energy, we are able to fund important programs such as the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair that

emphasize the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and encourage the involvement of students in STEM activities.” Students in Gaston County’s elementary, middle, and high schools have been researching and developing hypotheses, conducting experiments, and analyzing results in preparation for next month’s Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

The annual science fair will be held January 20-21 at the Schiele Museum. The event showcases students’ independent research of a topic using the scientific method. Students entering the science fair are responsible for the work associated with formulating a research problem and determining results, which helps the students develop their reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. “The investment in Gas-

Hawks Nest STEAM Academy celebrates ‘Rock Your School Day’ In an effort to make memories for their students while involved in fun learning activities, teachers at Hawks Nest STEAM Academy recently transformed their classrooms and dressed up in costumes for ‘Rock Your School Day’. “It’s a day for teachers to teach outside-the-box lessons,” said principal Tammy Mims. “For example, our kindergarten teachers taught about reading and vowels using a bat theme.” “The most important part of a room transformation is planning engaging activities that have an impact on learning,” said kindergarten teacher Amy Hofferbert, whose lessons focused on reading, engineering, and science. Her students designed bat shelters and tested the strength of the shelters by making sure that toy bats could hang and not touch the surface. The students also enjoyed sampling various fruits that bats like to eat. Teachers participating in ‘Rock Your School Day’ believe it is important to make sure that school is not only a place where students come to learn, but where they also can have some fun. One fifth grade classroom became the “Decimal Diner.”

Using a restaurant-inspired setup, students worked together to solve math problems from items listed on a menu, said teacher Tara Gingles. It made learning about decimals easier and practical as prices on menus often include decimal points. In another classroom, fifth grade science teacher Taylor White taught students about convection, conduction, and radiation in relation to making everyone’s favorite campfire treat, smores. “Our students were split into three groups, and each group had to see how long it would take to make smores using a convection oven, a hot pot of water on a burner, and a lamp,” explained White. ‘Rock Your School Day’ is part of the ‘Get Your Teach On’ movement that encourages educators across the country to use innovative ways to get their students excited about learning. While ‘Rock Your School’ takes place on one day, the idea is for teachers and students to ignite an affection for learning that will last throughout the school year. This is the week of Christmas. This Christmas season seems like it has flown by! Throughout this month we see so much around us reflecting the season. There are Christmas trees, decorations, and lights all around. Soon there will be parties, concerts, and family gatherings. With so much about Christmas all around us, what is the message of Christmas? Luke 2:7 tells us “And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn” (ESV). Joseph and Mary had traveled to Bethlehem, Joseph’s hometown, to take part in the Roman census. When they arrived, they found no available place to stay, so they had to take refuge in a stable. While there, Mary gave birth. She swaddled her precious baby and laid him in a manger. That night Jesus was born. The world would be forever changed by this one great act. Christmas is a time of faith. Joseph, Mary, the shepherds, each had to believe this awesome work God was doing. The message of Christmas is still about faith. Christmas means nothing if we don’t believe that Jesus

came into the world that night for us. It is also a time of hope. In our hopeless world, we know we have hope through Jesus, no matter what we face. Christmas is about love. Rev. The 2021-22 High School basketball season is underway and things are looking good for the Stuart Cramer men and the East Gaston Lady Warriors basketball programs. Stuart Cramer looking good This season the Storm hit the court ready to play. Cramer has jumped out to a 7-0 record going into the holiday break. This year’s Cramer team is built around a solid group of players. Many have played together for three years. This group is truly formidable. Senior Will Kelly is by far Cramer’s stat king. So far this year Kelly has rolled out 187 points and 47 rebounds. Both totals are team bests. While Kelly is definitely putting up big numbers he’s far from alone on the court. So far this season senior Mason Craig has contributed 64 points and 28 boards, while junior Jacob Joyner has added 56 points so far this year. In addition to Kelly, Craig and Joyner Cramer has other players that are putting in solid work. So far this year Francisco Verdezas, John Hill and Justin Rocquemore have all played well. On their way to 7-0 the Storm has played some exciting basketball. Cramer has had blowout wins over South Rowan and North Henderson and some squeakers including a 58-56 win over South Point and a tight 84-83 win over the Lincolnton Wolves. There are many things that factor into the Storms success. For starters Cramer has a deep bench. There is a ton of talent on this team. Another thing that helps is the fact that no matter what the situation is the players really have faith in each other.

“They believe in themselves,” head coach Brad Sloan said of the players. “We have had blowouts and buzzer beaters. We have been in games where we were the better team. We played in games where we may not have been the better team but we found a way to win.” On the court the Storm offense is relentless. They employ a high octane attack style of play that few teams can keep up with. “We play a fast paced game,” Sloan noted. “The motto for the season is 32 Relentless Minutes.” Under the 32 Relentless Minutes mindset the Storm go full throttle all the time. The Storm bench is so deep that when players are substituted there is only a marginal drop off in production. This makes Cramer dangerous. “I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Sloan added. To put it bluntly Cramer basketball is looking good, very good. It’s only December, but it’s fair to say that Cramer is one of the top teams in the Big South 3A. Lady Warriors playing well but must overcome setback Over at East Gaston, head coach David Hansel has the Lady Warriors hungry and ready to take on anyone. Going into the break East Gaston is 5-2. So far this year the Lady Warriors have scored big wins over Forestview, Cramer and North Gaston. The team is led by a solid group of upperclassmen that include seniors Allie Grice and Halle Chaffin along with juniors Heather Longnecker and Zoey Lockridge So far this year Grice has 75 points and 26 rebounds while Chaffin has 63 points and 23 boards.

Longnecker and Lockridge aren’t far behind in their contributions. Longnecker has 56 points and 33 rebounds while Longridge has 41 points and leads the team with 47 rebounds. While there’s no doubt that the Lady Warriors have been playing some good basketball there has been some bad news this year as well. A season ending injury to Halle Chaffin will force East Gaston to make some critical adjusts if they want to keep moving forward. Chaffin’s contributions were enormous. However, head coach David Handsel is positive about the future, and he has a plan. “We are excited about our team,” Handsel said. “Our team has shown a lot of resilience, especially after losing our top scorer.” Handsel doesn’t plan on having any one player step up to fill Chaffin’s shoes. Instead, Handsel is hoping that the players will come together and play even harder as a team. “We will depend on our defense to win games for us,” coach Handsel explained. “You can’t replace that kind of production.” Based on the talent on the EG roster don’t look for the Lady Warrior to slack off. The Storm and Lady Warriors will be busy during the Christmas break. Both schools are slated to play in the 19th Annual Peoples Bank Holiday Clash hosted by Lincolnton High School. The tournament will run from December 28th to December 30th and will include men’s and women’s squads from Bandys, East Gaston, Forestview, Highland Tech, Lincolnton, North Lincoln, Stuart Cramer and West Lincoln.

Thank you volunteers! The City of Lowell held a River Sweep event on Nov. 6 and 20 volunteers braved the cold temperatures to help clean up the South Fork River, the banks of the river, and the stormwater outfalls. Volunteers collected approximately 200 lbs. of trash.

The Belmont Abbey College Republicans club was just established this year by Youthan Love and two friends. Last Wednesday they had their first meeting with 11 people in attendance. They talked about next semester and the goals for the club, along with ways they can be active on campus. Since the first meeting they have received more applications and now have 18 members. The mission of the Belmont Abbey College Republicans is to be involved in the Republican Party and the local GOP while also having the opportunity to meet elected officials. Here are the top three leadership positions for the club. Youthan Love, President (center); Vice President- Jason Tronetti; Secretary- Connor Wilt.
