Gaston County Meals on Wheels keeps seniors rolling right along By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Luncheon is served (with a smile). That’s the credo of the Gaston County Meals on Wheels program that delivers a hot and hearty lunch every weekday to its senior citizen clients who are unable to get out and about and who might otherwise go hungry. The Gaston Meals on Wheels program is a branch of Meals on Wheels America. That umbrella group has more than 5,000 community-based programs across the country that are dedicated to ad-
dressing senior isolation and hunger. This network serves virtually every community in America and, along with more than two million staff and volunteers, delivers the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks that enable America’s seniors to live nourished lives with independence and dignity. Gaston Meals on Wheels is one of the programs under the Adult & Aging Services Division which is under the Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services. Gaston Meals on Wheels has seven locations in Gaston County,
there is representation in each township. It has over 850 volunteers, with approximately 500 that are active. Gaston Meals on Wheels serves approximately 300 meals daily (both hot and frozen meal delivery). The South Point meal site operates out of Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Belmont and runs four routes- two routes in Belmont, one in Cramerton and one in Lowell. It has about 95 volunteers. Jasha Hunter is the site monitor in Belmont and explained a bit more about who Meals on Wheels See MEALS ON WHEELS, Page 5

Each year, the Gaston County Family YMCA honors an individual dedicated to serving the community. In 2020 this award is being given to Hans and Megan Kanal from H&M Catering, located in Mt. Holly, for their tireless work combating hunger during the COVID shutdown. One in five children in North Carolina struggle with food insecurity which can be an anxiety-provoking for kids who struggle with hunger and don’t have access to free and reduced lunch at school. In addition to children, the COVID impacted seniors, many of which were on waiting lists to receive home deliveries. H&M Catering worked alongside YMCA staff and volunteers to safely make and deliver nearly 4,000 See YMCA, Page 4

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS The magazine stack
What is Love?
Most every household has a stack of magazines somewhere or another. Sometimes the stack is in the den or living room. Sometimes it is on the nightstand next to a bed. Sometimes it is heaped up like the Tower of Babel near the cammode. People get all kinds of magazines. A dear relative of mine who recently passed away allegedly had a vast collection of Playboy magazines. I am sure he subscribed just to read the articles. I know of a car repair garage that as an equally impressive collection of Cosmopolitan magazines. Nary a fishin’ or huntin’ or such magazines to be seen but lots and lots of Cosmo and advice in those pages for ladies to put to use for the improvement of their love and fashion lives. There are several stacks of magazines where I dwelleth. Since I have been writing freelance for Our State magazine for 30 years there are plenty of copies of that prestigious publication around. There are lots of mags relating to vintage British motorcycles too. I have to confess, the magazines that fascinate me the most are those “enquirer” types and the other genre I guess you could call “wimmens” magazines. We have plenty of those plucked from racks near the grocery store checkout line. The enquirer mags are my favorite. Without them, how can I keep track of the convoluted lives of Harry and Meaghan, or Kim and Kanye’s one billion dollar divorce, or what’s irking The Queen, or Lady GooGoo and her latest swain, or who in Hollywood is kerfuffling with who? I love the section of these magazines where they post pics of so-called

glamourous celebs doing mundane things like taking out the trash or cramming a sandwich in their botoxed lips or grocery shopping. Lo!, and behold!, wearing sweats and no makeup, they Alan Hodge look just like you and Banner-News Editor I, and mostly a lot worse. Another section in enquirer mags that has some interesting reading is generally located in the rear pages and consists of ads for faith healers and psychics and such truck. Psychics Soulmate Specialists for example can cure what ails ye with the help of Nazree and Samanatha. Sister Grabel can answer your toughest questions and Sister Margo will bring your lover back in a day. Oh, don’t forget the sure fire cures offered by other mysterious and all powerful seers like Sister Savannah, Prophet R, and Ann God’s Messenger. Wimmens magazines are chock full of tips - some good, some curious. The health ideas they have in their pages mean well, but it seems odd to me that weight loss plans are often published right next to recipes for cakes, candy, and pies. How can folks lose weight and eat double chocolate torte 16-layer cake? Being a carnivore I slurp at the pages that show photos of standing rib roasts, three inch thick steaks, and other sumptuous cuts of well roasted and delicious meats that few can afford to buy these days. Well, that’s enough of that. What magazines do you have in your wallet?
We are about to enter the wonderful month of love called February. Everything turns pink and there are red hearts everywhere. I can remember being in third grade and distributing Valentine’s Day cards to my classmates. As you got older, you were too cool to pass out Valentine’s cards to your classmates. In high school, I found myself being “twitter pated” when a certain girl walked in front of me. I was too scared to ask her out. In fact, I never did. We move into adulthood and hope to find that special someone. We ride on those warm, funny, fuzzy feelings that were never there with anyone else. But the hormones tend to tire in eighteen to twenty four months and those feelings go away. David Pomeranz wrote the song, “Trying to get the feelings again.” It was performed by Barry Manilow. Some of the lyrics were: Doctor, my woman is comin’ back home late today. Could ya maybe give me something? ‘Cause
Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
Breath By Dennis Siracusa In 1976 I enrolled in a four month scuba training class. One portion of our training made me take serious notice of the importance of breathing. Our exercise involved shutting off our air supply while submerged 15 feet. That was disturbing as I felt myself sucking hard on my mouthpiece while reaching for my reserve. This reminds me of a work incident involving cigarettes and cigars. A senior client asked me to install a security system in his shop. He loved making toys for kids and he had a lot of nice equipment. His building, though, was down a slope in his back yard about 40 yards. I installed his system and went onto my next client. A few months later I returned to their home for another project and discovered that John could no longer make a round trip to his shop. He was on a ventilator and so was his wife. Both started smoking as kids and while she stuck with cigarettes, John graduated to cigars. Both were told to give up tobacco or die. Two questions struck
Creating memories with dignity & respect
me. What does it feel like to be on a ventilator? Their response sounded like my experience shutting of my scuba air supply. Second, tobacco had stolen vitality from their lives and both wished they never listened to pressure to start smoking. Today there is a sharp division in America. There are those who believe in God and are doing their best to make God honoring decisions. Then, there are those who are diametrically opposed to any notion of God. Jesus reminds us of this stark truth in Luke 11:23. “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” Obviously this earth is sin ravaged and we all share in that damage. God’s children, however, have learned to hear God’s voice, confess their sins and repent, turn from the sin, with His help. But don’t you know that repentance and the Lordship of Jesus Christ seem vigorously unpopular in many places. This doesn’t void Gods word or the power of His gospel which the Holy Spirit illuminates for us. Jesus reminds us in John 15:5 that without Him we can’t do any-

thing. And in John 3:16 He reminds us He came to earth in Dennis Siracusa the flesh to atone for OUR sins and redeem us from hell’s path if we’ll take His offer. The Covid-19 virus is affecting many victims’ breathing and it’s adding to 40 million Americans crippled by fear today. Billy Graham’s ministry notes that “today, more than 5.3 billion people are living without the hope that comes from knowing Jesus Christ;” knowing Jesus as their personal savior. Friends, when we seek the Lord with all our heart, we will find Him. (Jeremiah 29:13) And I’ve well learned that Jesus is in charge of all aspects of our lives; even the next breath we take. Let’s turn to Jesus and His bible for our hope and for answers and steer clear of supposed wisdom from the internet, self-serving companies selling harmful products, and loud voices from Hollywood. This resolution would be a great one to start our year with don’t you think?

the feelin’ is gone and I must get it back right away. Before she sees that I’ve been (Chorus) Up, down, tryin’ to get the feelin’ again. The one that made me shiver, made my knees start to quiver Every time she walked in And I’ve looked high, low Everywhere I possibly can But there’s no tryin’ to get the feelin’ again It seemed to disappear as fast as it came I read every book Looked through every meditation and poem Just to bring back home that old sweet sensation But it ain’t no use to me trying to get that feeling again Where did it run to? I thought I’d done all that I could Just to keep the love light burnin’ But whatever I’ve done I guess, I just haven’t done it too good’ Cause all that’s left is yearnin’ (Chorus) The one that made me shiver, made my knees start to quiver Every time she walked in And I’ve looked high and low And everywhere I possibly can But there’s no tryin’ to get the feelin’ again It seemed to disappear as fast as it came I want to get that feelin’ I’ve got to get that feelin’ I’ve gotta get that feelin’ again and again and again Tryin’ to get the feelin’ I’ve been tryin’ to get the feelin’ again. The feelings wane, we “fall out of love,” and find someone else to give us those feelings. It happens again for eighteen to twenty four months. Then the feelings go away again.

What is love? Is it a feeling? Yes, there are feelTony Marciano ings that accompany it. If it were based on feelings, I would have been married and divorced five times. What is love? If its more than a feeling what is it? It is an act of the will. It is when we choose to love someone even when they are unlovable or can’t return the love back to us On December 23rd I saw love. My wife put my elderly mother to bed. By now, she was 45 pounds and very gaunt. There was nothing attractive in her that would have drawn my wife to her. My mother was very incoherent at this stage of her life due to Alzheimer’s. Yet, as my wife gently put her in bed, I watched her kiss my mother on the forehead. Let me challenge you that love is more than a feeling. It is an act of the will when we choose to love, especially when that person is unlovable or cannot return the love back to us. But isn’t that what God in Christ has done for us? I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.

New art exhibit at Gaston County Museum The Gaston County Museum, 131 W. Main St., Dallas, presents a new exhibit by Bob Matthews- Everything Is A Nail- January 19 – May 15, 2021 in the Bullpen Gallery/ GCM Website. Often combining religious icons with political commentary, Rob Matthews’ work can be described as curiously disorienting. According to Matthews, who was born in North Carolina and currently resides in Nashville, “Themes
of upheaval, power, displacement and the unspoken message of ‘home’ anchor the work. Some subjects of the paintings are heroes. Other subjects are villains. The remaining that are depicted are caught in the middle. All of the work is made to spend time considering events and people that get lost in the shuffle of the ever-changing news cycle. The exhibit features 11 paintings over canvas on wood panels.

meals to children and seniors across Gaston County from March 18 until May 28, 2020. “What you have done for the Y this year, for the kids and the seniors, was phenomenal. We could not have done it without you.” said Sharon Padgett, Gaston County Family YMCA CEO. “We are thrilled to award you the 2020 Volunteer of the Year.” “What a great honor,” said Hans adding, “When everything was going down, it
gave us purpose.” “We feed people, that’s what we do,” added Meagan as she was being presented the etched glass award by Mary Moffitt, Stowe Family YMCA, Executive Director. “Our reach would never have been as large without you. You were the backbone and we were able to take the bus and go out and see the smiling faces of kids and seniors as they were waiting on their porches for us,” said Moffitt.
This award it typically presented at the YMCA Annual Meeting, which was not held due to COVID this year. Padgett explained why it is important to recognize volunteers. “Whether it is the Board volunteer, youth sports coach or a greeter at the door, our volunteers are the foundation on which the Y was built. They give of their time, talent and treasure because they believe in our mission,” said Padgett.
The Gaston Museum of History’s Art Around Gaston photo series continues. This week’s highlight was created and donated by students from Gaston Day School in downtown Belmont. You can find these wonderful pieces of art in front of the Belmont Community Gardens on N. Main Street.
In a production that was a true display of unity itself, four organizations united with the City of Belmont for the 30th Annual Belmont Unity Day. Belmont Coalition of Concerned Citizens, Race Matters Community Conversation Group, Gaston County NAACP, and Gaston County Organization for Community Concerns, Inc. collaborated for the completely virtual program. City of Belmont Information Technology Specialist Seth Norkett wove their respective pieces into a single masterpiece that premiered to over 140 viewers. “Working on the 30th MLK Unity Service has been very therapeutic for me.” said Kathleen Boyce of Race Matters Community Conversation Group. “It’s been great to focus on something positive in the midst of all the negativity. And it’s been fun to work closely with both old and new friends, several of whom I have never met in person.”
While there was no Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award presented this year, the unity candle ceremony continued with a powerful “Pass The Light” montage. Appropriately, one of the youngest light bearers, Princeton Ballen, son of Dominique Isles, wore a shirt with the caption “INSPIRE.” Mt. Pleasant Men’s Choir’s iconic version of “God Bless America” followed. The Charles Jesse Bynum Reid Foundation was beneficiary of the Unity Day offering. “It’s been very uplifting to see all these parts come together,” Boyce added. “I admit I was very stressed about the Unity Candle, but folks stepped forward to assume leadership for every part of the service - speaking, setting up Givelify accounts, planning music, creating strong messaging, and editing. It was exciting to hear a strong message from Belmont-born Fred Davie delivered with the skyline of New York City in the background. Another pandemic blessing
is that we may well have reached more people than we have in the past. Certainly more people were involved in putting together the service. I am grateful.” Rev. Frederick Davie’s message reflected on numerous quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He emphasized that “we are woven into the same garment of destiny.” In closing, he recited Mathew 25 and urged us to “...move beyond hopelessness and despair, into the bright hope of tomorrow...where all dwell in that beloved community of mutuality and respect.” Pastor Kevin Ford gave the parting benediction. Patricia Franks from Belmont Coalition of Concerned Citizens had the pleasure of introducing Rev. Davie. Of his message, she said “Rev. Davie shared a timely word. The question is are we listening?” The service remains available for viewing at www.cityofbelmont.org/ MLKUnity. The link can be found on the City of Belmont website.
Practice fireplace safety Gathering around the hearth this winter? While a cozy, charming fire is the perfect place to relax, don’t take a vacation from practicing safety guidelines. Stay safe with the following checklist. Alarms, detectors-Check all of your home’s life-saving safety devices, including carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms for functionality and to ensure batteries are still working. You should do this periodically, but it’s especially important during the holidays and other times when you use your fireplace. Fireplaces- Many decorating items and materials are combustible, so make sure yours are a safe distance from the fireplace. Conduct annual maintenance on your fireplace, chimney and associated elements. Outfit your gas fireplace with a safety screens to prevent burns. Remember that
the metal in safety screens can heat up, and your heating equipment — fireplaces, stoves, inserts and their surrounding material — will remain hot for some time after use. Candles- Lit candles add warmth and splendor to rooms, but they come with certain risks. Place these burning beauties in safe locations away from fabrics such as drapes and curtains,
table centerpieces and other flammable objects. Place candles where they can’t be easily knocked over. Only burn candles in occupied rooms — if they are burning, never leave them unattended. If you have children, pets or an infirm person living with you, battery-operated, flameless candles or scented candle warmers make for safer alternatives that can offer you peace of mind.

Catawba Crossings feasibility study The Gaston-Cleveland-Lincoln Metropolitan Planning Organization (GCLMPO) and regional project sponsors have begun a feasibility study for the Catawba Crossings Project. A feasibility study is an early planning tool that results in conceptual designs, cost estimates, and recommendations for future study. The Catawba Crossings Project proposes a new alignment roadway between NC 279 (S. New Hope Road) in southeastern Gaston County to NC 160 (Steele Creek Road) in western Mecklenburg County. The GCLMPO recommends a multi-lane, median-divided boulevard. A boulevard typically includes landscaping along the roadway as well as bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. Between January 6, 2021 and February 4, 2021, GCLMPO and its partners will be accepting comments on the project. Additional information will be provided at www.catawbacrossings.com
and you will have the opportunity to provide feedback through the project website. Your insights into the short- and long-term transportation needs of the local community are invaluable, and we welcome your thoughts. The project team will carefully consider all comments received and evaluate whether they can be incorporated into the conceptual design of the project. GCLMPO will present those conceptual designs at a second public engagement event in the summer of 2021. If you do not have reliable access to the internet, a computer or smart phone, but would like to participate in this project by providing comments, please contact the GCLMPO Project Manager by phone or email to make arrangements that will meet your needs. GCLMPO Project Manager Randi Gates, AICP, info@catawbacrossings.com call (704) 854-6604. All comments must be received by February 4, 2021.

Stephanie Marie Collins Asmuth Belmont, North Carolina The Asmuth family, Gaston County and planet Earth lost a sweet and loving spirit on Friday, January 8, 2021. Stephanie Marie Collins Asmuth, beautiful wife, loving mother of two, and an inspiration to so many unexpectedly went home to heaven at the age of 48. She was born September 12, 1972 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Steven and Carole Collins and moved to Gaston County shortly after. She met, fell for and married the man of her dreams, Kip Asmuth on January 4, 1992 at the age of 18. She was a loving, devoted and active mother to Kenny and Kyle. As the boys grew to young men, her pride and love for them, if even possible, grew greater. Stephanie will be most remembered for the way she loved and treasured Kip and her sons. She spent most of her professional career building on downtown commerce through her entrepreneurship and as an advocate for Downtown
Estelle Goins Summey Estelle Goins Summey, age 86, died Friday January 15, 2021 at Arbor Acres Retirement Community. She was born in Dallas, NC to the late John William Goins and the late Alice Wright Goins. She was the youngest daughter in a family of nine siblings, preceded in death by her brothers J.W. Goins,
Belmont. Stephanie loved to travel, explore, reflect, laugh, sing, dance and spend time with her family and friends. She loved it when she could experience all of the above with others. Her free spirit was contagious. Her fascination with life was so liberating to be near. To say she loved to grill, barbecue and cook would be like saying the ocean is moist. This girl could cook! Her skills with a piece of red meat were legendary. Even the simplest of meals would generate different tones of oohs and aahs from its beneficiaries. Speaking of the oceanStephanie’s love for the coast, the unobstructed views of the sunrises, the majesty of the sunsets and the freedom of the seas seemed to recalibrate and revive her soul. She put such an effort into catching every sunrise and sunset that now her memory is attached to them. Her smile was truly monumental and would light up a room no matter the burden. Her insight was tasteful, flavorful and unique. Where we may frown upon the thought of a Monday - she referred to them as “fun-day Monday”; where we might not sing out loud in public - she would - while dancing too; while we celebrate our “birthday” - she celebrated her “birth-month”; where we might take a friendship for granted - she would make it a point to make you feel special; where we might post a misspelled, single syllable status update on fb - she would somehow use words
and expressions in her posts that you’d still be thinking about tomorrow. Her 48 year presence on this earth was indeed a gift to us. We remember you, Stephanie, and we do not take you, or what you taught us for granted! Left to cherish her multimillion memories is her family that she absolutely adored: her loving and devoted husband of 29 wild years Kip; her loving and loyal sons Kenny Asmuth of Wilmington and Kyle Asmuth of Belmont; her mom and step-dad Carole and Tony Frisina of Gastonia; sister Alison Worley; brother Ryan Farmer; step sister Kristen Frisina. She is also greatly missed by her four legged companions Ted and Eleanor, who to say the least, were well taken care of; and many extended family members, close friends and acquaintances. Due to the Covid pandemic, there won’t be a formal gathering celebrating Stephanie’s way-too-short life. There’s no way she would want to risk exposing Kip to the crud! Rather, in the spirit of sharing and expression, you are encouraged to visit her public Facebook page and share your memories and photos with her. In honor of her compassion for dogs, memorials in Stephanie’s name may be made to Double N Kennels, 10442 Moores Chapel Road, Charlotte, NC 28214. McLean’s of Belmont is assisting the Asmuth family. www.mcleanfuneral.com

If your family is like mine, your household is full of questions. In my house, it is usually my kids wondering what we have to eat, or what we will be eating later! We are always asking about what we are going to do, when, and how we will do it. Over the course of these last several months, with COVID and elections, people have many questions. People wonder if our lives will ever be back to normal again. Many people wonder what the future holds for our nation. As Christians, many people have questions about God’s plan for us, and what He has in store for our future. In the Apostle Paul’s letters to his young follower Timothy, he wrote words of encouragement for what Timothy would face in the future. Paul was an aged man, now in prison. Soon he would be martyred for his faith in Jesus. Timothy had been with Paul for many of his missionary endeavors. Now Timothy was the pastor of the Ephesian church. Timothy surely had many questions about his future, and the future of God’s Church during an age of persecution and uncertainty. In 2 Timothy 3:10-12, Paul reminded Timothy of
all of the persecutions and sufferings he had faced because of his faith in Jesus. Paul wrote to Timothy, “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed” (2 Timothy 3:14, ESV). We face an age similar to Timothy. We face the uncertainty of many things. Will life ever be the same as it was before COVID? Life is full of things we cannot control. We also find it difficult as followers of Jesus in this age of so much evil and chaos. Paul knew Timothy was a man of great faith, grounded in God’s Word. Timothy was prepared to face whatever came his way. Like Timothy, we can face a world full of questions. Indeed, we do not know what will come next in this life. We do not have all of the answers, but God does. Paul and Timothy faced difficult circumstances of persecutions and struggles, yet God was faithful to them. This year you and I may face times of struggle, times of pain, and times of chaos. There may be tough times ahead, yet God has equipped us to carry on. Timothy was ready for the work ahead, and so are we. Paul told Timothy, and he would certainly tell us too, continue in what you have learned, and firmly believe! No one but God knows what’s next, but through Him we are ready.

NorthPoint Development closes on 3.6M S.F. industrial park in Gastonia and Lowell
The City of Lowell welcomes its newest police officer, Officer Stamey. He comes to Lowell PD as a veteran officer that will be an asset to the city for years to come. This swearing in happened under the watchful eye of the Chief in his office rather than at City Hall due to COVID-19. City of Lowell photo
Community VFD safety tips Community VFD in North Belmont is offering these safety tips for the cold weather and new year Keep Pets Indoors When Possible If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pets. Don’t keep your pets outdoors for long periods of time during very cold weather. Short-coated dogs may need a coat or sweater during walks. Provide Outdoor Shelter for Your Pets If you have outdoor dogs, make sure they have a dry, draft-free doghouse that: Is large enough for pets to sit and lie down in, but small enough to retain their body heat. Has a floor that is elevated a few inches off the ground and is covered with cedar shavings or straw. Has an entrance that faces away from heavy winds and is covered with a flap of heavy waterproof fabric or heavy plastic.
NorthPoint Development has announced that it has acquired a 365 acre development site that will house a 3.6million square feet of class A industrial space, Gateway85. Phase one of the industrial park includes two buildings totaling 900,000 square feet and is expected to deliver in the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2021. The next two phases of the development offer build-to-suit opportunities to be customized as needed. Gateway85 is located along the I-85 corridor in Gastonia and Lowell. “We are particularly excited about this project and its proximity to the I-85 corridor. The Gastonia area is quickly becoming a new frontier for industrial projects like Gateway85,” Donny
Hicks, Economic Development Official in Gaston County said. “The location near Uptown Charlotte and the Charlotte Douglas International Airport make this property especially appealing to potential occupiers.” Lowell Mayor Sandy Railey added, “we are so happy to welcome NorthPoint Development to Lowell. This is exciting for our City and for Gaston County. The development of this property has been long awaited and we are excited about working together with NorthPoint to make this project happen for the good of our City and our citizens.” Gateway85 is located less than one mile from I-85, one of the fastest growing corridors in the United States. Over half the U.S. population
can be reached within a day’s drive from the site. The Gaston County area has seen industrial demand continue to expand in the face of the ongoing pandemic. Companies are attracted to the connectivity to the greater Charlotte MSA, the pro-business community, and the strong existing labor pool. “We saw a huge opportunity in Gaston County and the Charlotte area due to the great availability and access to quality talent. This area is known to be pro-business and the I-85 corridor is critical for big-box warehouse success,” Ian McDonald VP of Development at NorthPoint Development said. “The Gateway 85 project will create many needed jobs in our community and add diversification to our
tax base while providing an extremely visible corporate presence along our heavily traveled Interstate 85 corridor” said Gastonia Mayor Walker E. Reid III. He adds,“Gastonia welcomes NorthPoint to our community and we value our partnership with Gaston County, Gaston County Economic Development Commission, Two Rivers Utilities, and the City of Lowell that worked together to make this project a reality.” NorthPoint Development is based out of Kansas City and Gateway85 is their second development in the Charlotte region. JLL’s Jordan Quinn and Spencer Yorke are marketing Gateway85 on behalf of NorthPoint Development.

Home Safety Tips The first step is continuing to be diligent about fire safety in your home by testing the batteries (and replacing if needed) on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Keep pets and children away from lit candles and fireplaces. Also, keep matches and lighters in a locked cabinet out of reach of children. Do not leave food unattended in the kitchen when you are cooking, this is especially true when frying and boiling items on the stovetop. Keep children and pets away from cooking surfaces and hot pans and dishes.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Certified Medical Assistant Amber Key applies skills she learned at Gaston College Amber Key, a 2018 graduate of Gaston College’s Medical Assisting program, has been a frontline worker in helping patients adapt to COVID-19 restrictions. Key manages the anemia clinic at Metrolina Nephrology Associates in Gastonia and has had to modify her normal procedures to observe the safeguards needed to protect her patients as much as possible. Key was already a phlebotomist – a technician who draws blood for tests and performs blood transfusions – when she entered the Medical Assisting program in 2016. She graduated in May 2018 and had a perfect score on the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Certification Exam. “I chose Medical Assisting because I felt it would help make me more versatile in the workplace,” Key said. She has worked at Metrolina Nephrology Associates since she graduated from Gaston College. Since COVID-19 has been a consideration, her job has become “more tedious” than it was before. “All patients have to be screened prior to coming into the office,” she said. “I see fewer patients on a daily basis due to needing more time for the screening
and to trying to make sure patients are safely distanced from each other.” In order to minimize exposure for some of her more fragile patients, she has been going outside to their cars, where she does vitals and gets the capillary samples, she needs from them. “My main goal is to give the patients the best care that I can, and to keep them, my coworkers and myself safe.” To ensure safety, Key always wears full Personal Protective Equipment, including face mask, gloves, goggles, and gown. She washes her hands frequently, and everything used in her workplace is sanitized and wiped down with approved cleaning agents. Key also makes sure to wipe down the steering wheel, door handles and other surfaces in her car. The Gaston College Medical Assisting program gave Key the knowledge and skills she needed for her position. “I am very happy with my career. It fits my lifestyle,” she said. “My goal is to continue to learn as much as I can and con-
tinue to contribute as much as I can at my workplace.” The coronavirus pandemic, however, has required some previously unanticipated adjustments to the way Key approaches her job. “I honestly don’t think that any amount of school can prepare you for actually dealing with a pandemic,” she said. “I do feel that my education at Gaston College prepared me for the change in my responsibilities because you have to know how to adapt to whatever is presented to you and still maintain that level of patient care. It is so important to have a high standard when working in this field. If you start the Medical Assisting program with high expectations from Day One, by the time you’ve completed the program it is second nature and it just carries over to the work environment.” The Gaston College Medical Assisting program gives students the clinical and administrative skills needed to help others as a medical professional. Medical assistants combine their knowledge of the human

The two-year Gaston College Medical Assisting program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs. Graduates of the program receive their Associate of Applied Science degree and qualify to take the AAMA certification examination to become a Certified Medical Assistant.

East Wake Academy wins state title with 3-1 win over Mountain Island Charter Mt. Island Charter School played East Wake Academy for the NC 1A state championship last Saturday. East Wake Academy got their offense rolling early, taking a commanding 2-0 set lead with a pair of 25-15 set wins to set themselves to win the school’s first state championship. The Eagles combination of setter Kristen Seavy and Krista Brantley were a deadly force in the four set win over Mountain Island Charter. Seavy was selected as M.V.P. of the 1A Championship Match thanks to her 38 assists and four aces. She also contributed five digs and four blocks to a spectacularly well rounded effort. The Eagle attack funneled through Seavy, though she frequently played through Brantley who smashed 28 kills with just 10 attacking errors in the match. Mountain Island Charter got their attack going in the third set, sparked by ten kills from Lauren Pledger in the set. The Raptors ripped off nine straight points to go up 13-11 in the third. Then, after giving up a 6-0 run to the Eagles, the Raptors tacked on another 9-0 run to go up
Abbey tops Emmanuel LJ McCoy (pictured) tallied 18 points and hit four free throws in the final 1:06, lifting Belmont Abbey to a hard-fought 76-74 victory over Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action last week at the Wheeler Center. The win was the fifth in a row for the Crusaders, who improve to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Mt. Island Charter School volleyball team. 22-17, eventually holding off East Wake Academy 25-21 to force a fourth set. Early in the fourth set, Mountain Island appeared poised to send the match to a decisive fifth set, scoring six straight to take a 12-6 advantage. However, finding themselves down 21-11 in the fourth, the Eagles managed a side out that brought
up Eilis Thomas up to the service line. Thomas sent her heavy, diving serves pounding across the net, disrupting the Raptors rhythm and the Eagles scored 12 straight points to go up 24-21, hanging on to close out the match 25-23. The NCHSAA is committed to recognizing good sportsmanship and has
partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau to recognize one individual from each of the participating championship teams in volleyball with the 2020-2021 Sportsmanship Awards. The recipients for this year’s 1A awards were Lauren Pledger from Mountain Island and Lexi Brantley from East Wake Academy.
How It Happened Belmont Abbey found itself leading by seven with 56 seconds left, but needed a defensive stop in the final five second to secure the victory. Mario Lacy, Jr. and Charles Solomon also reached double figures at 14 and 12 points, respectively. Lacy added eight rebounds, while Sean Halloran tallied seven boards and a team-best five assists.
The Crusaders posted a season-low for shooting percentage at .446 (29-65), but also turned in their best field goal percentage defense number of the campaign at 41.2 percent (21-51). Belmont Abbey won the rebounding battle 37-33 and forced 22 turnovers. After Emmanuel scored the first five points of the game, Nate Davis hit three straight buckets to give The Abbey a 6-5 lead. With the score tied at 11, McCoy and Emmanuel Hernandez hit baskets and the Crusaders never trailed again. Seven straight points turned a one-point lead into eight, 33-25 with 5:07 left in the half, then margin reached its biggest point, 39-27 at the 2:56 mark. The score was 43-32 at the break.
