Robin Johnson Hospice House getting a beautiful garden By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
“Our children will be remembered here.” That’s what Southern Piedmont Chapter of the Compassionate Friends leader Candace Hulsey has to say about the new garden that group is having built on the grounds of CaroMont Health’s Robin Johnson Hospice House, 5005 Shepherds Way, near Dallas. The idea behind the garden is for it to be a quiet, reflective place of natural beauty that folks can visit when they need to take a deep breath and think about things. Its official name is the “Southern Piedmont Chapter of the Compassionate Fiends Children’s Memorial Garden”. “The garden will provide a place where our children, grandchildren, and siblings can be remembered,” Hulsey said. “It will also be a place of solitude and beauty for the patients and their families along with the staff at Robin Johnson Hospice
House.” Construction of the garden is well under way and plans are for it to be done by April. The general layout is a winding path of large flagstones flanked by flower gardens and other plantings. Three large arbors arch over the walkway. Small boulders offer places to sit and reflect. A focal point is a wild cherry tree whose moss covered trunk dips low, then twists and turns back skyward. Other features the garden will have includes memorial pavers, a small amphitheater, benches, sculptures of children at play, and a small natural meadow. The garden was laid out by Tiz Johnston of Garden Design. QLM (Quality Landscape Materials) provided the ingredients. According to Hulsey, the garden has been in the dreaming and planning stages for six years. Compassionate Friends is footing the bill. See GARDEN, Page 3

A group of educators from Colorado visited Gaston County to gain a better understanding of how three local elementary schools – W.A. Bess, Pinewood, and Rankin – are linking the fine arts to positive academic outcomes.
Educators from Colorado visit Gaston County Schools By Sean Corcoran Gaston County Schools
What’s going on in classrooms at three elementary schools in Gaston County has captured the attention of educators from Colorado. W.A. Bess Elementary,
Pinewood Elementary, and Rankin Elementary earned the prestigious North Carolina A+ School distinction, which is presented by the N.C. Arts Council. W.A. Bess joined the program in 2019, and Pinewood and Rankin followed in 2020. As an A+ School, Bess,
Pinewood, and Rankin have added the arts across the curriculum. Word spread, and a group of 24 educators from the Colorado Springs School District visited Gaston County Schools to learn more about our North Carolina A+ Schools. What
they saw were creative and inspiring ways that teachers are incorporating aspects of art, music, dance, and theater into their daily lessons and activities. “It is great for them to see the amazing work being done See VISITORS, Page 4

Even though Rev. Charles Wesley Reid passed away on Nov. 9, 2020 at age 68, his Rev. Charles Wesley Reid legacy in Belmont and beyond will continue on. Reid’s motto and life philosophy was the acronym “B.E.L.I.E.V. E.” That stands for Brother, Exceptional, Loving, Inspirational, Energizing, Visionary, and Enthusiastic. He not only embraced those ideals, he lived them each and every day. Reid had several siblings. They included brothers Oscar, Abriel, Forrest, and sisters Broncher and Vera. Vera characterized Charles with these reflections. See REV. REID, Page 4

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS Cawfee
Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
No matter how you pronounce or name it- Cawfee, Caffee, Coughee, Joe, Jitter Juice, Mud, Java, Liquid Energy, etc. & etc. there’s no doubt that the drink made from roasting, crushing, boiling, etc. & etc. again the beans of the coffee plant is one of the most popular things on Planet Earth. My late mom was a coffee fanatic. She would drink at least two pots of it every day. She would drink it out of a fine china cup and smoke fags while she did so. She was a bundle of nervous energy. No need to wonder why. Do you have a recollection of the best cup of coffee you ever had? I have a few and now you are going to have to read about one of them. Back in 2009 I took part in the reenactment of the Civil War Battle of Spotsylvania Mule Shoe in Virginia. I rode up there with my late friend Jan Williams of Stanley. The folks who organized the event on a big farm near the actual battlefield took a backhoe and other heavy equipment and constructed replicas of the trenches and earthworks that were part of the original battle. About 5,000 infantry, blue and grey, took part in the reenactment that weekend of the dawn attack that Yankee, uh I mean Federal, forces launched against the Rebel, uh I mean Confederate, guys on May 10, 1864. Anyway, the night before the reenactment battle, we’uns who were wearing the grey that weekend filed into the aforementioned trench. Jan and I slept, or rather tried to sleep, under a shared wool blanket and rubber poncho. We woke up about 5am and like everyone else we were drenched with dew and freezing cold. A little further up the trench, some guys had built a fire and put a metal mop bucket full of water on it. They dumped a big bag of coffee into the bucket and when the black brew boiled over they poured in a canteen full of cold water. The resulting inversion makes the grounds go to the bottom and pure coffee is
left on top. Anyway, the coffee guys went down the line of troops in the pre-dawn mists with their bucket. One guy had a dipper and he dipped it in Alan Hodge the bucket as we held Banner-News Editor up out our tin cups. I can still see that steaming bucket of coffee, hear the clink of the dipper and the tin cups, and recall how the hot coffee went down my throat and warmed me instantly and the smile Jan had on his face as we stood there in a red dirt ditch with our friends waiting for the shooting to start. I wonder how many business deals, professions of love, moments of breaking news good and bad have happened over cups of coffee. I wonder how many dreams and thoughts of dreams have been hatched and pondered while the steam from a cup of coffee wrapped itself around the dreamer’s head. For a long while I stopped drinking caffeinated coffee. It made me hyper and I am naturally hyper anyway. But a week or so ago I was feeling kinky and adventurous and went to the Wills corn-venience store on Hickory Grove Rd. and the ladies at the grill there made me a big livermush sandwich and I bought a big, really big, cup of high octane coffee and I went outside to the picnic table out front and sat in the morning damp and cold and ate the livermush- crispy on the outside, mushy on the inside- and drank the steaming coffee and in just a minute the caffeine kicked in and I was at Spotsylvania all over again and Jan was there too. Do you have coffee memories? Sure you do. The next time you get some time to yourself make a pot and swig it down and while it’s hot let the good times, or the memories thereof, start your day with a bang.
Destined for? By Dennis Siracusa Years ago a book came out fictionalizing men living on Mars and women on Venus. Most of us, without having read that book, have figured out that men and women are different. We have different communication styles, modes of behavior, and emotional needs; and that’s all by God’s grand design. Some people gripe about their husband or wife and obviously don’t appreciate their differences. Many do, however, by recognizing our shortcomings and seeing how our spouse undergirds us. During 40+ years of my marriage, Bev and I have both spent quality time learning about each other and how best to employ our strengths to minimize our weaknesses. Choices determine our destiny. There was a Canadian TV series called Andromeda that frequently portrayed many intergalactic marriages as ones constructed on genetic preferences or political expediency and Hollywood gave us Marriage Story in 2019; should we look to those writers or actors for advice? As we consider marriage what firm foundation is best? Should we make it an unbreakable covenant or something less; a science fiction idea, a contract, a trial, a commitment, or an open marriage? Should

My bathroom scale tells me so. I also have enjoyed shopping for new (smaller size too) clothes. Which reminds me of that beach vacation on the horizon in about 10 weeks.
So yes, aging has its challenging moments. We may have to let some things go, but what we can accomplish and gain in return can certainly bring an incredible sense of joy and true reflection on what can come later. I feel limitless now, and that is a special gift when you get older. I am ever so grateful (now more than ever) to take on a new day. The best is yet to come.
we seal it with a pre-nup and escape clauses? We need to know because our perseverance and effort depend on it. Currently, the US divorce rate is 42.6% and another 7.5 million couples are simply living together. An honest open willingness to discover and understand our differences is vital. The bible, Ephesians chapter 5 is indispensable for life and marriage. First, call on the Lord for help becoming more like Him; see our sinfulness and make Christ-like changes. Vs. 6 is important because it tells us not to be fooled by ourselves or others when we feel encouraged to excuse sins. Vs. 10 tells us to “carefully determine what pleases the Lord.” Vs. 15 “be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools.” Vs 21 “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” And then Vs 25-33 teaches us to respect one another; serve one another; and love one another in the same way Jesus loved the church. Peter 3:7 expands these thoughts. “In the same way, you husbands must give
honor to your wives. Treat your wife with u n d e r standing as you live Dennis Siracusa together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers and a lasting marriage will blossom.” Much marriage/relational experimenting is going on but marriage is a type of garden and if we want fruitful results from it we need to pattern it after God’s covenant design; our successful destiny rests on our choice. Our unique Purpose and Calling are principles formed in us by God’s design; destiny factors in all our choices over a lifetime. Do we want to mold our marriage around the truth of God’s Word or what we wish? Let’s work on our relationship with God and our spouse daily and pray for God’s blessing and protection over our efforts so we have our best opportunity for success.

GARDEN From Page 1 “The money came from fundraisers, the Community Foundation, and grants,” Hulsey said. When it’s done, the garden will be gifted to CaroMont and Robin Johnson Hospice House. Hulsey has a personal interest in the garden. She lost her son Steven on July 24, 2004 at age 33 in an auto accident. “When you lose a child the fear is they will be forgotten,” Hulsey said. “Steven may not be here but the garden will be long after I am gone. I feel so blessed to be a part of this garden. It is a wonderful thing.” During this interview, Hulsey stood by the twisted cherry tree and looked at it thoughtfully. “This tree said to me, I am broken but I still live,” she said. “That is us.” More about The Compassionate Friends The Compassionate Friends was founded over 50 years ago when a chaplain at the Warwickshire Hospital in England brought together two sets of grieving parents and realized that the support they gave each other was better than anything he, as a chaplain, could ever say or
provide. Meeting around a kitchen table, the Lawleys and the Hendersons were joined by a bereaved mother and the chaplain, Simon Stephens, and The Society of the Compassionate Friends was born. The Compassionate Friends jumped across the ocean and was established in the United States and incorporated in 1978 in Illinois. Each chapter, along with the supporting National Office, is committed to helping every bereaved parent, sibling, or grandparent who may walk through our doors or contact us. of the many ways our children are using their imagination to learn the curriculum.” This is what an A+ North Carolina School looks like on a typical day – integrating the arts into the curriculum and viewing the arts as a foundation for teaching and learning. Research indicates that
students who are engaged in the arts achieve at a higher level and also develop an understanding of and appreciation for the arts. Through their visit to Gaston County, the Colorado educators were able to see how the arts are linked to positive academic outcomes and learn strategies and techniques to use in their own classrooms.
VISITORS From Page 1 in Gaston County Schools and find out more about the benefits of A+ learning and how children are engaged in this type of unique school environment,” said Michelle Burrows, the North Carolina A+ Schools director who arranged the visit. The Colorado educators had the opportunity to observe teachers and students using the arts to focus on critical thinking skills. For example, in Taylor Helms’ third grade class at Pinewood, students were asked to draw a city using arrays, which is the arrangement of objects, pictures, or numbers in rows and columns. “The purpose of an array city is to inspire students to use creativity to make the buildings,” explained Helms. “They cut out squares as windows, put them in rows and columns, and then wrote matching multiplication equations for each building.” By integrating art into the assignment, children gain a better understanding of their multiplication skills, said Helms. “They love the handson approach to learning.” In Amanda Humphries’ classroom, third graders performed a skit using “The Tortoise and the Hare” story to demonstrate their reading comprehension skills. “After reading a variety of folktales and discussing character traits, motives, and moral lessons in the stories, students had the opportunity to showcase a folktale through dramatization,” explained Humphries. “In groups, one student was the narrator of a fable while the other students did a pantomime, acting out key vocabulary words for actions and feelings of the characters.” The hallways at W.A. Bess Elementary are lined with colorful and creative art projects with written explanations. First grade teacher Ashley McGinnis used jacko-lanterns for her students to learn about two dimensional shapes. “Some students used triangles and rectangles for teeth, and others used different shapes such as ovals and circles to represent the pumpkin,” said McGinnis. “It’s one

Vera said. Reid was a familiar sight sitting on the porch of his grandparent’s home on Sacco St. “On any nice and sunny day you would find him in one of the rocking chairs,” said Vera. “He loved for people to stop by and sit on the porch and rock with him. On Sundays after church you could find the front porch and yard full of family and friends.” Even the pandemic failed to dampen Reid’s hospitable spirit. “Charles would say we had to practice social distancing,” Vera said. “He always kept bottled water, sodas, and chips for the guests to enjoy. Whenever the family or someone in the community needed some advice Charles would always try to give them words of encouragement or even offer to pray with them.” Oscar Reid remembered Charles in the form of another acronym..L.O.V.E. That one stands for Leadership, Obedience, Virtue, and Empathy. “He showed love for all,” Oscar said. “He showed leadership to everybody in his community, ministry, and love
of music. He showed obedience in showing his practical acceptance of the authority and will of God. He showed virtue in his daily life by honoring God and being willing to help out people. He showed empathy in his compassion for his family, community, and all mankind.” Reid valued education. He graduated from Belmont High School in 1969. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Hampton University, a master’s in education from UNC Charlotte, and a master’s in divinity from Hood Theological Seminary. Reid’s faith was also a driving force in his life starting with Hood Memorial AME Zion Church in Belmont. He went on to become a pastor at several AME Zion churches including Big Pineville, Steele Creek, and Clinton Chapel in Charlotte, as well as Mount Zion in Gastonia. Reid also had a successful career as a counselor at Family Housing Services of Charlotte. He was also a personnel analyst for the CharlotteMecklenburg Schools and director of Student Support Services at Johnson C. Smith University. He worked as a career development specialist for Goodwill Industries in Charlotte where he retired in 2019.
I do! By Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org
Many people just celebrated Valentine’s Day. Couples all around the nation remembered their love through dinners, flowers, cards, and candy. This Valentine’s Day marked twenty-five years since the day my wife and I were engaged to be married! As we look through our Bibles, we see so many instances of God’s love for us, our love for Him, and our need to love others. We also find love between husband and wife. The first institution God has created is the family. Long before we had churches, and governments, God made the family. Our enemy Satan attacks our marriages and families daily because he knows if the family is broken, everything else will be easy to break. God loves us and desires strong families that can change our world. Throughout the Bible we find many marriages. Many of these marriages show us great traits of a marriage grounded in the love of God. We see the love of Jacob and Rachel. Every marriage, every family must be grounded in love, the love of God, and the love for each other. We see Abraham and Sarah, and the endurance of their marriage as they journeyed to fulfil God’s purpose for them and the nation of Israel. In marriage, we must bear with each other during the good and
bad times of life. There is the faith and commitment of Joseph and Mary. They committed to God and each other, following God’s plan for them as Rev. Trent Rankin Jesus came to die for us. Every marriage definitely needs commitment. We have committed to each other and made promises to God. Joseph and Mary stepped out on faith, discovering God’s awesome plan for them. Our marriages and families must be built on our faith in God, trusting Hs plan for us. In Matthew 19:6 Jesus said, “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate” (ESV). Think about the first part of that verse, “What therefore God has joined together.” Our marriages, our families, have been put together by God. When we consider this, it totally changes the way we approach our relationships. If God has joined us together in our marriages and families, then we need the faith, endurance, and commitment they deserve. Most of all, our marriages and families deserve our undying love. Valentine’s Day may highlight our love, but each and every day our homes should reflect the attributes of godly marriages and families, and the love God has for us.

will think of us after they are made. The challenge of leadership is doing the right thing, not the popular thing. Its being willing to disadvantage yourself for the sake of honoring God and doing what’s best for those you lead. Fear sets in when you fail to believe that God will provide everything that you need as you seek to do what is right in His eyes. In 1st Peter 5, Peter reminds pastors that Godly leadership sometimes brings about hardship and opposition. But at the same time, he also said not to fear the outcome or what others might think. Therefore, you can cast all your anxiety
on God because He’s strong enough to handle it. He genuinely cares for you and promises to lift you up in due time. Mark Costner This promise is true not only for pastors but all leaders as well. As you lead, you will face difficult circumstances but by trusting God and casting your cares on Him, He will give you everything you need so that you can do what’s right and lead others well.

Belmont City Council News... The Belmont City Council recently met for their annual planning retreat and discussed potential redevelopment uses for the Belmont Middle School. During the discussion, the council outlined uses they would consider and not consider for the site. Any redevelopment will need to go through a conditional rezoning process or obtain a special use permit. Uses the Belmont City Council would consider for the redevelopment of the old Belmont Middle School: Boutique hotel, Mixed-use that could include: Retail/ commercial, Offices, Upscale condos (for purchase only), Co-working spaces, Food Hall, Civic use such as new space for the local library and/ or historical museum. Any redevelopment plan must include keeping the original structure built in 1938.
The city council would consider partnering with a developer on the right redevelopment plan. The redevelopment plan should have connectivity to Stowe Park. The city council encourages redevelopment options that put an emphasis on keeping this property as a continued asset to the Belmont community. Uses the Belmont City Council would not consider for the redevelopment of the old Belmont Middle School: Apartments, Senior housing, Schools. If you are interested in redeveloping the school, please contact the city manager’s office at 704-825-5586. At its February 7 meeting, the Belmont City Council also…. Denied the special use per-
mit application requesting to subdivide two lots on Julia Avenue and South Point Road into five single family lots that would be smaller than the average lot width in the area. They couldn’t find that the use would not materially endanger the public health or safety and would not substantially injure the value of adjoining property if located where proposed. City Council approved a contract with Morris Berg Architects in Charlotte, NC for the redesign, engineering, and inspection services for the Stowe Park restrooms renovation project. Abbey Creek Greenway City Council approved a capital project ordinance for the Abbey Creek Greenway Project. This project ordinance was needed in order to proceed with the next phase

City Council then approved a grant agreement with the Carolina Thread Trail organization for $30,000 to help fund the project’s easement acquisitions.

Cramer and South Point look good in season finales By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
The Stuart Cramer and South Point basketball teams both finished the regular season strong. Now both squads are gearing up for this week’s Big South 3A Conference tournament and the upcoming 3A playoffs. Winning the conference tournament is a big deal. It’s a title that’s worth more than just bragging rights. A win guarantees a slot in the state playoffs. The Storm finished the regular season at 18-5 overall and 9-5 in conference action. In the Storm’s last five games they went three for five including a big 101-55 win over North Gaston and a convincing 82-60 win over the Forestview Jaguars. While Cramer closed out the season on a high note,
they also had to deal with some tough games down the stretch including losses to Crest and Kings Mountain. With that said, Cramer is still looking good going into the tournament and the playoffs. Stuart Cramer’s biggest game last week had to be the North Gaston game where the Storm offense was on fire. In that one it was a Cramer show right from the beginning. The Storm jumped out to a 28-15 first period lead and just kept rolling. Cramer kept the pressure on for the entire game. The Cramer offense showed just how potent they could be when they put up 56 second half points. Will Kelly was Cramer’s top scorer with 42 points. In that game Cramer cleared the bench and ev-
erybody got playing time. In the end, eleven Cramer players put up points against the Wildcats. This week’s conference tournament will be important for the Storm, but no matter how things shake out Cramer is already set for the playoffs. Based on the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) rankings the Storm have already earned a playoff bracket spot. Going forward Will Kelly Justin Rocquemore and Jacob Joyner are a few of the players to keep an eye on in upcoming action. Looking back at the last few games head coach Brad Sloan saw his team deal with a little bit of everything. In the long run he knows what his squad is capable of doing and hopes to get the most out of them in the next few weeks.
“We had some tough games down the stretch but I’m happy with the way the offense has played,” Sloan said. “We had games with 100 points and another with 82 points.” The next few weeks should be interesting for Cramer basketball. This year’s team is good, very good. On any given evening they can literally set the scoreboard on fire. As the North Gaston game showed, the Storm possess a very potent offensive attack that is more than capable of generating points. As coach Sloan preps his team for the conference tournament, he knows nothing will come easy. in our conference. You have to be on your A game every night because everyone is so familiar with each other.” Over at South Point things are looking pretty good as well. The Red Raiders finished the regular season on a roll. Big Red closed out with a three-game win streak including a 66-50 win over Ashbrook, an 88-52 win over Forestview and a 61-42 win over North Gaston. South Point has had one roller coaster ride of a year. The Red Raiders closed the regular season at 12-11 overall and 8-6 in league action. This season has been challenging to say the least. At times the Red Raiders have played well, while other times they battled with consistency issues. While there is always room for improvement it looks like the Red Raiders are really coming together at the right time. “Our guys are in a positive place right now,” head coach Kody Kubbs said. “It’s been a long season with a lot of ups and downs. I know they are excited to get into the conference tournament.” South Point has the potential to be a dark horse in this year’s tournament. A spoiler
of sorts, a team that that if you don’t take seriously could bite you. The Red Raiders have definitely shown that they’re capable of going toe to toe with just about anyone in the Big South. Players to watch in the weeks to come include Jaquis Rumph, Cooper Ray, Sully Absher and Jackson Blee. Like Cramer, South Point would love to walk away with a tourney win. However, if the Red Raiders don’t take the tournament, they’re still looking pretty good when it comes to the upcoming 3A playoffs. According to the NCHSAA South Point is sitting in the 26th slot in the 3A West. Thirty two teams from the Western part of the state will get bracket slots so the Red Raiders are in. “It looks like we’re firmly in,” Kubbs added. “But we will be traveling for our first game.” In the weeks to come South Point will need to play smart basketball. One thing that’s definitely going to be in their favor is the fact that the Red Raiders are now healthy across the board. “Knock on wood we are healthy,” Kubbs said.

Some publications and online ad sales reps will tell you anything to get your advertising dollars. You want to be sure you are getting the circulation you are paying for. That’s why we have been audited by Circulation Verification Council, a national, independent newspaper auditing firm. Don’t just believe what you are told by advertising reps — ask for proof.
