BackPack Weekend Food Program provides a vital service for students By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Students in Gaston County have several options for lunch during the weekday, including school cafeterias, delivery to homes and apartment complexes via bus runs by the YMCA and school system itself, and drive by pickup at schools, but kids need nutrition on weekends too and, frankly, some find it hard to come by.
That’s where the BackPack Weekend Food program has been stepping in by providing good eats to students who might otherwise not get the food they need on Saturday and Sunday at home. BackPack Weekend Food was founded in 2011 by Carolyn Niemeyer, former nurse and community advocate, and was intended to serve as a temporary service to help feed students on the week-
ends during the school year. However, nearly 10 years later, the program is still viable and serves nearly 1,000 students in grades k-12 every school year. The administrative portion of the program started out of the Niemeyer’s home; their daughter’s bedroom, in fact. Mrs. Niemeyer and her husband, Dr. Charles Niemeyer, hovered over See BACKPACK, Page 4

Progress being made to preserve North Belmont and South Cramerton’s Baltimore School By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Work to have the circa 1925 Baltimore School in Cramerton preserved for future generations is moving forward. Last year, the Town of
Cramerton Commissioners passed a resolution giving the school a local historic designation. The historical significance of school has also received approval from the North Carolina Dept. of Archives and History. The Baltimore School has also
officially been designated as a Historic Site in Gaston County. It’s the first Gaston County Historical Preservation Site in Cramerton. Owner Fred Glenn is in the process of finalizing wording that will go on See BALTIMORE, Page 6

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS The Birds Once upon a time there was a musical group called The Byrds but this is not about them. It is about The Birds that fly through the air and are not eight miles high. If I could be any animal it would be a bird. Just imagine if you could stand up and flap your arms and the next minute be sailing through the sky. Once two cave men named Og and Trog were sitting on a rock looking up at some birds flying over and one dropped something on Og’s head and he exclaimed “C’mon, man!” not realizing at the time that very phrase of consternation would be used on numerous occasions by a future President of the United States. My fascination with birds goes back a long way. When I was a little kid I was allowed to visit my grandmother Edna Mull “Bang Bang” Willeford a few times and she had an aviary in her back yard where she raised canaries and inside her house she had many bird cages full of canaries both yellow and orange and they would sing up a storm. Later on, I had parakeets as pets and once one of them got out of his cage and was flying around the house and a lady was doing some ironing in the living room for my mom and he flew in her hair and she hit the ground screaming an flopping like a tuna fish and we all laughed and laughed. Once I was with a bunch of fishing pals at the Kure Beach pier. There was a little breakfast diner there and we were outside its door drinking coffee and the phone pole there had several cross bucks on top and seagulls were
Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him perched on them eyeballing for some toast crumbs and such on the pier planks below. You know what one of them did next. It landed on a friend of mine’s head and in his Alan Hodge coffee and the rest of Banner-News Editor us fell down laughing. Seriously, birds are amazing. I was in the Audubon Society for many years and have over 100 species I spotted marked in my birdwatching book. How can a hummingbird that is no bigger than a cigar stub fly 3,000 miles on migration? The other day I was sitting on the front porch in the sun watching the birds work over the bird feeder and suet cake feeders and it struck me how they all were different types but seemed to get along well together as they waited their turn at dinner. Between snacks they would sit on a twig in the sun and generally seemed to be enjoying life. I even saw a pair of bluebirds checking out the birdhouse and that let me know that spring would indeed come again. The sooner the better. Let’s learn something from the birds and it’s not sitting on a cross buck waiting for a person or freshly washed car to appear below. It’s about enjoying the little things each day brings such as a few precious hours of sunshine, tolerable temperatures, and a good snack. Cheep cheep.
Meditations Pick your role models carefully By Rev. Angela Pleasants When I was in seminary, we had a popular professor. If you did not sign up early for his class, don’t expect any more open slots. Dr. Stanley Hauerwas was a professor at Duke University, serving as the Professor of Theological Ethics at the Divinity and Law School. I did not have the privilege to take his class, but I read many of his books. Dr. Hauerwas had a following of disciples and teacher assistances (TA’s) that were inspiring. I noticed his TA’s who learned from him develop his characteristics. Dr. Hauerwas was known for his jeans, button-down shirts, and loafers or sneakers. His TA’s would also wear, yes, you guessed correctly, jeans, button-down shirts, and loafers. When they would pass us in the hall, as a term of endearment, we would say there go the Hauewasians, meaning the disciples of Hauerwas. It is natural sometimes to emulate those we admire. I find myself quoting and speaking like those I admire in history. Sometimes my
friends will say, “You sound like…” or “Your actions are like…” It is a compliment to hear someone say I remind them of someone I admire. But we also must be careful who or what we hold as models. We must be careful who or what we allow in our hearts because we can become what we behold. “But we all, with unveiled faces, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. II Corinthians 3:18 NASB. What does it mean to be changed into the image of God? Through Jesus Christ, it is putting off the old nature and being clothed in the new nature of righteousness and holiness. It is a willingness to give up who we are to become what God intends. So, when you behold God, we meditate on his word, worship, and praise God, and reflect on him as God radiates through us. It is the Holy Spirit that causes us to behold the glory. And we become what we behold, meaning we grow in Christlikeness in this life and the life to come.
Rev. Angela Pleasants
Turning Point By Dennis Siracusa Life has many turning points all requiring decisions. Let’s look around; Covid-19, politics, economics, and immigration. What information is true; accurate and how do we exercise wisdom? During the age of man, there have been many decisive turning points. Human civilization has regularly cycled through stages of bondage to spiritual growth, from liberty through abundance to apathy, dependence and back to bondage. Few nations have lasted longer than 200 years. Why? Why haven’t things just gotten progressively more rotten? I have an idea it has to do with Satan’s grand design for sin versus God’s love for us and His Sovereign will consistently interrupting the devil and the devastation Satan has planned for us. To grasp this we need to stop thinking our world is billions of evolving years old. Why? Because believing in a time frame like this causes complacency; tolerance, and the idea that we can construct our world the way we want and have our cake and eat it too. That is the devil’s lie! Time is short! We are living in God’s purposeful, prophetic Story! God is eternal and all powerful and there is no other God but Him! He has plainly told us this over and over for thousands of years. “I am the first and the last, and there is no god besides me.” Isaiah 44:6. God created all of creation in 6 days because He CAN. He
is infinite! Our human story is only about 10,000 years old and all our logical musing based on current radiometric dating undergirding secular science’s deep age bias is constant evidence of our limited knowledge and rebellion against God. And even having that as a backdrop, God has given us His Word and mercifully introduced turning points to adjust our wayward direction with a history of spiritual awakenings. Johnathan Edwards wrote about the move of God in 1734 in Northampton, Mass that “it pleased God… to display his free and sovereign mercy in the conversion of a great multitude of souls in a short space of time, turning them from a formal, cold and careless profession of Christianity, to the lively exercise of every Christian grace, and the powerful practice of our holy religion.” God supernaturally transformed regions, nations and the world with this and other intense
awakenings. Another revival impacted Logan County, KY in 1800-1840; another impacted the Northern Dutch church in New York City in 1857, and many are aware of the Azuza Street Revival of 1906 in Los Angeles. Why does God show up like this? It’s because He knows what the end result of sin is and He, yet again tells us in John 3:17 that “God sent His Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through Him.” God doesn’t want any of us to perish. But here’s the catch. We all have free will and it’s our choice how we manage turning points. Accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior or not. Choose Good or choose Evil Rely on God’s truth, love and service to others or not. Let’s turn from our own careless ways of honoring God and let God show us how to live lives of Christian grace.

BACKPACK From Page 1 a computer and two twin beds many nights sorting through stacks of paperwork and organizing tickets for food orders. Food items were stored at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Gastonia, where board member Rev. Brack East serves as Senior Pastor. For five years, the BWFP operated out of the church basement with volunteers unloading the food truck, filling food orders and distributing food to partners each month. The BWFP started with nineteen partners and 387 students in elementary schools. The following school year, the program added five middle and two high schools. In March 2015, the BWFP received 501c(3) status. The program continued to grow and eventually outgrew the church basement and the Niemeyer’s home. In 2016, the Board of Directors determined it was time for the program to get its own office space and warehouse. Current Gaston County statistics show the program has 1.6+ million meals distributed since 2011, has over 500 volunteers, works with 43 schools, has 45 program partners (places that pay for the lunches), had 2,755,824 pounds of food distributed in 2019-20, 138,588 meals served in 2019-20
(through school closing in mid-March), 911 students in grades k-12 received meals. Partners in the BannerNews circulation area include Ebenezer United Methodist, First Baptist Cramerton, First Presbyterian Belmont, First United Methodist Belmont, First United Methodist Mt. Holly, McAdenville Wesleyan, Mt. Sinai Baptist Mt. Holly, Park Street Methodist, Queen of the Apostles, South Point Baptist, Steel Specialty Inc., St. Mark’s United Methodist Belmont, The Pointe Church Belmont. The food that the program provides ranges from Ramen noodles to chicken noodle soup. Just a few of the other foods that goes out includes juice, cheerios, green beans, spaghetti-os, pudding, milk, and vegetables. The food comes from US Foods. CaroMont Health allows the program to purchase the food wholesale through CaroMont’s Premier purchase agreement with U.S. Foods.. At Queen of Apostles, site partner coordinator Julie Russo explained how the food gets from the delivery truck into the hands of students at North Belmont Elementary. “We receive the food and it is placed in bags for the individual students, she
said. “Volunteers take it to the school and, because of COVID, leave it outside for the school social worker to take in. Then, the kids go to the social worker’s office and pick it up. It’s brilliant. People come from all over to see how our program works. Russo says there are about thirty volunteers at Queen of Apostles who do inventory, pack bags, or delivery. “I’ll find a job for everyone if they want to volunteer, she said. Volunteer Jean Panzica explained why she’s involved with the program. “It’s an important thing to feed these kids, she said “If not for the program, they would be hungry. Liked other partners, Queen of Apostles pays for the food it delivers. If the demand exceeds that amount of money, BackPack Weekend picks up the slack. Donations are appreciated. “One hundred percent of the donations go for food, Russo said. The Cramerton Parks and Recreation Department is offering a new park bench fundraiser and donation program. As part of a newly adopted Parks and Recreation Master Plan, Parks and Rec. is starting with benches and wanted to offer the opportunity for individuals to donate a bench or give a bench in honor of an individual(s) for years to come. There are currently have 35 opportunities for bench donations in Central Park, C.B. Huss Recreation Complex, Goat Island Park, River Link Greenway, and Riverside Park. Donors can choose the specific park in which they would like their bench to be placed. Donors can list their top three choices in a specific park where they would like their bench placed (we have a list of locations for each park that donors can choose from). Donors can pick from two different plaques that will adorn
the benches. Donors have 36 characters which they can place on the plaque. These benches have a 25 year life expectancy and will be adorned with a 4 x 6 plaque for the entirety of the benches useful life. Benches will be blue or green powder coated, perforated, and mounted in ground with concrete.
These benches will not only make our parks more visually appealing but they are some of the most flood and vandal resistant benches on the market. Contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 704-824-4231 with any questions or to reserve your bench today.
Gaston County to get 600 doses of Covid-19 vaccine Gaston County’s Public Health Department was notified by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services that it will receive a baseline amount of 600 COVID-19 vaccine doses each of the next three weeks. There remains the possibility there could be a small additional increase in the allocation for any of those weeks, but it is not anticipated to be a significant amount. Gaston County is now working to ensure it fulfills the first-shot appointments it has already scheduled at the Gastonia Farmer’s Market each of the next three weeks. The County does not anticipate opening new appointments for those weeks at this time. “While we are glad to know the baseline amount so that we can plan for these next three weeks, our staff stands ready to vaccinate far more individuals each week, Public Health Director Steve Eaton said. “You give us the vaccine, and we’ll get it in people’s arms. The County will continue to exhaust every effort to se-
cure as much vaccine for its residents as possible. Once the County receives notice on allocation amounts for future weeks, it will then make an announcement on opening future appointments
at GastonSaves.com. Residents who have pre-registered for their spot in line will be notified by email (or phone if no email address was provided) when new appointments become available.

Construction at North Belmont Park is being done by Pinnix and is aimed at repaving the parking lot, improving some drainage issues, building ADA compliant sidewalks, grass planting, and other landscaping. Depending upon the weather, the work is expected to take at least three weeks. South Fork River Park, 4185 Mountain View St. off Hickory Grove Rd., will soon be getting a paved parking lot to replace the gravel one. The paving will begin after the North Belmont Park project is complete. South Fork River Park is one of Gaston County’s most interesting recreational facilities. The park boasts three trails

Plant life in South Fork River Park is diverse. The land is located where famed French botanist Andre Michaux discovered the rare Big Leaf Magnolia during the 18th century. South Fork River Park also includes another trail that leads to a stream at the base of a scenic cliff. Though enjoyment of nature is the theme of South Fork River Park, there are some rules in place to preserve that tranquility. smoother water is ideal for canoeing and kayaking, and the park provides paddlers with a riverbank ramp to launch their watercraft. Fishing will no doubt be a popular activity at South Fork River Park, as huge catfish swim in those waters. Birdwatchers will have plenty to see with many species of warblers, woodpeckers, and songbirds populating the forest. Waterfowl of several types are also evident. Mammals run the gamut at the park, from deer to beavers. Several types of lizards can be seen darting among the rocks and leaves that line the trails.

NC Gov. Cooper extends Modified Stay at Home Order Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen announced last week that North Carolina’s Modified Stay At Home Order, requiring people to be at home from 10 pm – 5 am, will be extended. Face covering requirements and restrictions on individuals gathering in both indoor and outdoor settings are still in place. Executive Order No. 189 will be in effect through at least Sunday, February 28, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. The extension of Executive Order No. 190 allowing for the sale of “to-go” or delivery of mixed beverages will continue to help businesses that are struggling right now. The extension of Executive Order No. 191 will help families have the ability to stay in their homes, a critical component of slowing the spread of the virus. The Executive Orders
Safe Sitter class offered The Belmont Parks and Recreation is hosting a Safe Sitter: Safe@Home class for Grades 4-6. This class will teach preteens how to be safe when they are home alone. The price for the class is $25.00 , which includes an hour and a half class and a safe at home booklet that the participants can take home with them. Four classes, two on Wednesday March 10th at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, and two classes on Saturday March 13th at 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM. If you would like more information on this class or would like to register, please go to https://parksrec. egov.basgov.com/belmont or call 704-825-8191.
for “to-go” or delivery sales of mixed beverages and the evictions moratorium both received concurrence from the Council of State. “With more than 3,300 people in the hospital, and the percent of positive tests in double digits, we know this virus is still spreading,” said Governor Cooper. “And with at least one new contagious variant of COVID-19 in our state, we still have work to do. We cannot let our guard down, especially in these cold winter months.” In addition to the Modified Stay at Home Order, the DHHS secretarial directive remains in effect. People should stay home and only leave for essential purposes such as buying food, accessing health care, and going to school or work. “The 3 Ws are as essential as they have always been,” said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. “Remember people can have COVID-19 and not know it. The best way to protect those around you is to act as if you do have the virus and could be contagious. That means always wearing a mask – over your mouth and nose, always waiting apart from others, and always washing your hands frequently.” North Carolina continues to administer Covid-19 vaccines across the state. As of last week, 99.8% of all first doses received by the state were reported as being administered and 859,695 total doses have been administered. Vaccine supply continues to be very low and the state is hopeful for more vaccine to be on the way. North Carolinians can find out when they will be eligible to get their vaccine through a new online tool, Find My Vaccine Group. The screener walks users through a series
of questions to determine which vaccine group they fall in. Learn more about North Carolina’s vaccine rollout at YourSpotYourShot.nc.gov. more led him to buy the school building from Burlington in 2003 and is currently driving his desire to see it preserved. “There are a lot of memories here,” Glenn said. “My mom Mary Lucinda Adams and aunt Helen Falls Holmes went to school here. When I was growing up in the 1950s, we used to come see movies on Tuesdays at the school and sit on the benches that are still inside. Fred Kirby (WBTV singing cowboy star) would come and put on shows for us. He would park his horse trailer at the end of the street and ride Calico to the neighborhood. We also had fish fries.” Glenn has a dream for the future of the Baltimore School. “If you think about it, the school was our community center,” he said. “I would like to see it preserved.” That’s going to take money. Glenn says that fundraisng has been slowed by COVID. “The plague has me hunkered down,” he said. “I want to see the school preserved possibly as a museum for current and future generations in memory of those who attended it.”

My Way!

BANNER-NEWS OBITUARIES
Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org
I think it would be safe to say, that most people want things their way! I will admit, I like things to go the way I plan. People like to get their way, and to have things go according to the way they have planned them. Sadly, we expect the same thing in our relationship with God too often. When it comes to God, we expect God to work and answer in the way we want and expect. It is as if people see God as their genie, instead of their Lord. In 2 Kings 5:1-14, we find Naaman, a man who also wanted things his way. Naaman was the commander of the Syrian army, an enemy of Israel. Naaman also had leprosy. Naaman had a servant girl, an Israelite who had been taken captive, who told his wife about a prophet in Israel who could cure his leprosy. The King of Syria sent Naaman to Israel to find Elisha the prophet. Naaman arrived at Elisha’s house, yet he did not find what he expected. Elisha’s servant came out and told Naaman to go wash himself in the Jordan River, and he would be cured. Naaman had expected Elisha to come out and cry out to God and heal him. He was insulted that he had to wash in an Is-
raelite river. He left in a rage. His servant convinced him to go back and wash in the Jordan. He did and was healed. He returned to Elisha and glorified God! It is easy for us to find ourselves just like Naaman. Naaman sought out God, but he had expectations of what would happen to him. We are the same way too often. We pray, calling on God to work and intercede in people’s lives. We may even profess to have great faith and trust in God, and his will, yet we have expectations of God. We expect God to heal and work just as we want. Like Naaman, when God does not do as we expect, we get greatly offended. God taught Naaman a great lesson in obedience and surrender that day. Naaman had to humble himself, and yield himself to God, and His ways. We want things our way, yet God’s way is better. He knows what we need, and when we need it. He is sovereign God! Instead of looking to our own desires, may we humble ourselves in total surrender to God as Lord. May we walk in true obedience to God. Jesus said to the Father as He prepared to go to the cross for us, “Not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42, ESV). May we say, not my way, but God’s!

Gaston College athletic program hits home run with big name signings The Gaston College Board of Trustees voted unanimously in November to add athletics to its rich history of academic excellence and leadership. Gaston College has been without athletics for nearly 50 years and when Dr. John Hauser became President last June, he began the process to end that drought. A national search was officially organized to hire key leaders to lead the program and the first tier of the lineup is now complete with the hiring of: Gene Banks, Athletic Director; Dickey Nutt, Associate Athletic Director/Head Basketball Coach; Shohn Doty, Head Baseball Coach; John Horshok, Director Athletic Program Development and Sports Marketing. “This is an amazing group who will bring instant credibility and excitement to our college and campus,” Dr.
Hauser said, “Our alumni, students, faculty, staff and community deserve a full college experience and athletics will provide both local enthusiasm and national exposure for Gaston College.” Banks will manage the coaching staff as Athletic Director (AD) and he brings his legendary Duke University credentials to Gaston College along with the management skills he developed playing and coaching in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and internationally. After being named the top high school player in the country Banks helped launch the Duke dynasty and played on Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s first team before performing for the San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls. He later coached the Washington Wizards with Flip Saunders. He has previous experience as
an AD at Bennett College and has a popular streaming podcast--”The Bank Shot” and continues to help support youth programs through his long-running namesake foundation.
