“The Division of Water Resources has been notified of the discharge and is currently reviewing the situation. The City of Kings Mountain is committed to addressing this matter and ensuring the protection of public health and the environment.”

The city is currently using bypass pumps and can confirm that no health concerns are associated with this spill. For additional information, contact the City of Kings Mountain at (704) 734-4531.

Distinctive features help KMPD and NCSBI identify remains

The Kings Mountain Police Department (KMPD) is providing an update regarding the ongoing missing person investigation of Angela Jamarica Burris, which began in April 2021. On February 25, 2025, KMPD received confirmation that previously unidentified human remains discovered in Gastonia on April 22, 2022, have been identified as those of Angela Jamarica Burris.

Following extensive collaboration between KMPD, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI), and the Gastonia Police Department, it was determined that these remains matched the profile of Angela Burris. DNA analysis confirmed this identification, and the news was shared with her family earlier today. We offer our deepest condolences to the Burris family during this incredibly difficult time.

This portion of the investigation began in September 2024 when detectives from KMPD and NCSBI agents identified distinctive features on the remains found in Gastonia. The Gastonia Police Department had entered them into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs). After conducting a thorough investigation and performing DNA analysis, the department now confirms that the remains be-

long to Angela Burris.

While current investigations conducted by all agencies involved do not indicate any signs of foul play, we encourage anyone in the community with information, whether small or significant, that could shed light on the events leading up to her death to come forward.

Lush Med Spa & Drip Bar opened its doors in Kings Mountain in February, marking an exciting new chapter for local nurse and entrepreneur Heather Rudnick McDowell, RN BSN. After years of serving as a registered nurse and helping others through a variety of healthcare roles, including bedside care and administration, Heather has made a bold leap into the world of aesthetic medicine and wellness. The opening of Lush Med Spa represents a dream come true and a chance to give back to the community that shaped her.

As a nurse with 15 years of experience, Heather has seen firsthand the challenges healthcare professionals face, especially after the burnout many experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. But her own personal journey to health and wellness, particularly through weight loss and discovering the world of cos-

metic injections, sparked her passion for this new path.

“I’ve always been passionate

about helping people,” says Heather.

“Nursing has allowed me to care for patients in many ways, but after experiencing the power of aesthetic treatments, I realized there was an entirely new way to help people feel confident in themselves. Whether it's through Botox, dermal fillers, IV drips, or weight management, the ability to enhance someone’s well-being both inside and out is incredibly rewarding.”

Lush Med Spa initially opened in March 2024 in Shelby, and the community's response has been overwhelmingly positive.

However, Heather always dreamed of opening a location closer to her roots. The new location in Kings Mountain is a personal milestone and an opportunity to give back to the people who shaped her.

“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some truly inspiring

GCPD seized Fentanyl and a firearm during investigation

On Tuesday, March 11th, the Gaston County Police Department (GCPD) arrested Jorge Ednilson Saravia Flores of Charlotte during a drug trafficking investigation carried out by the Department’s Special Investigations Unit.

Flores was taken into custody in a parking lot in Belmont, where detectives seized over 30 grams of Fentanyl and a loaded 9mm pistol carried on his person.

Flores was charged with five counts of Trafficking

Fentanyl, one count of maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance and carrying a concealed firearm. He is in custody at the Gaston County Jail with no bond. Through careful coordination and proactive investigations, GCPD is dedicated to reducing the presence of these dangerous substances in our community and helping to foster a safer environment for all residents. A Bill introduced in the North Carolina Legislature could potentially impact tips and overtime pay, and two additional Bills have a chance to increase minimum wage earnings for many state residents in the coming years.

N.C. House Bill 403, Worker’s Rights Act, led by Rep. Harry Warren, R-Rowan, aims to add more money to North Carolina workers’ paychecks by eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay. A WRAL-TV News report states that the Bill would eliminate state income taxes on workers’ first $2,500 in bonuses. The House Commerce Committee passed the Bill on March 11 and now heads to the House Finance Committee.

Rep. Warren mentioned that at least 20 other states have filed similar Bills, and there are two Bills in the U.S. Congress, one by a Republican and one by a Democrat. The idea of not taxing tips received bipartisan support in the N.C. House last week, with Democratic Rep. Carla Cunningham, representing Mecklenburg County, speaking in favor of it. Cunningham highlighted that the Bill would be especially helpful to people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

However, there are concerns about the lack of de-

tails on how the Bill might be abused or the potential cost to the state in lost revenue. Warren acknowledged that legislative staff had not analyzed these aspects. Despite this, the House Commerce Committee passed the Bill, and it now goes to the House Finance Committee for further details on its real-world impact.

Two other Bills filed this month in the North Carolina House of Representatives seek to raise the minimum wage across the state using different approaches.

The North Carolina Fair Minimum Wage Act, filed by State Democratic Representatives Allison Dahl, Aisha Dew, Bryan Cohn, and Marcia Morey, aims to raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour for hourly wage employees in North Carolina effective January 1, 2026. The Bill proposes an additional $2 per hour increase every year thereafter. It also addresses wage theft and penalties for employers who do not pay their employees the minimum wage. North Carolina’s current minimum wage is the same as the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

“Any employer who violates the provisions of G.S. 95-25.13 or any rule adopted under that section shall be liable to the employee or employees affected in the amount of

their actual damages, including, but not limited to, lost wages and benefits plus interest and reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs,” the Bill states.

The North Carolina Economic Security Act, filed by State Democratic Representatives Pricey Harrison, Carolyn Logan, Marcia Morey, and Aisha Dew, is another ambitious Bill that also aims to raise the minimum wage, mandate equal pay for equal work, require paid family leave, and reenact child tax credits.

Both Bills aim to raise the minimum wage. The Fair Minimum Wage Act proposes a specific increase to $10 per hour starting January 1, 2026, with an additional $2 per hour increase yearly thereafter. The Economic Security Act proposes a minimum wage of $22 per hour, adjusted for inflation annually.

The Economic Security Act includes additional provisions such as mandating equal pay for equal work, requiring paid family leave, and reenacting child tax credits. The Fair Minimum Wage Act focuses on raising the minimum wage and addressing wage theft.

Either Bill, filed by Democratic representatives, would require the Republican majority’s sign-off. The Fair Minimum Wage Act focuses more straightforwardly on

A North Carolina teenager was arrested in Cleveland County following two separate investigations at a South Carolina car dealership, according to the Oconee County, SC Sheriff’s Office, as reported by Fox Carolina News.

The first incident occurred on December 30, when a deputy responded to a report of vehicle break-ins at a dealership on Clemson Boulevard, sixteen miles from Clemson University around 9:09 a.m. The deputy found broken windows and evidence that someone had tried to program the vehicles to start. It was discovered that a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro

ZL1, valued at $64,987, had been stolen from the dealership. The second incident took place on January 31 at the same dealership. A deputy was called to inves-

tigate a suspicious person and found broken glass and a broken key box with some vehicle keys missing.

Based on the evidence, 18-year-old Trenton N. Porter of Asheville was charged with malicious injury to property and grand larceny in connection with the first investigation. He was found with the stolen Camaro in Cleveland County, North Carolina. In the second investigation, Porter was charged with second-degree burglary, petit larceny, and malicious injury to property. Porter was transported from the Cleveland County Detention Center to Oconee County, SC, on March 11.

On March 10, Governor Josh Stein announced a new Task Force for Child Care and Early Education, highlighting the need to invest in North Carolina families. Co-chaired by Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt and Senator Jim Burgin, the group is tasked with identifying solutions to expand access to affordable, high-quality child care across North Carolina and support the childcare workforce.

ucational trajectory,” said Governor Josh Stein. “I am excited to launch this task force so that we can get to work together to make child care work for our kids, our employees, and our small businesses.”

“When we invest in child care, everyone benefits. Parents get to keep working and keep building their careers. Small businesses can keep their productive workers. And most importantly, our kids get a nurturing and supportive environment where they can thrive during their formative years, one that will shape their entire ed-

“North Carolinians are hardworking, and we have incredible systems like our community colleges to prepare people for the jobs of today and tomorrow. However, none of that matters if parents can’t go to work with peace of mind knowing their kids are safe and supported,” said Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt. “This task force will help us take serious steps forward in tackling the child care crisis in North Carolina to make sure providers can keep their doors open, children can get the care they need, and parents can get back to work.”

“North Carolina’s strength lies in its families, and access to quality child care is crucial to their wellbeing,” said Senator Jim Burgin. “I am proud to cochair this task force alongside Lieutenant Governor Hunt so that we can ensure North Carolina is the best state to start a family.”

Governor Stein issued an executive order formally establishing the Task Force for Child Care and Early Education to identify strengths and gaps in the current system, recommend key public and private investment in child care infrastructure, and work to recruit and retain a strong child care workforce. The task force will submit reports and recommendations to the Governor and the public.

Creations By Chelsey, at 1300 Shelby Road, was founded in the heart of Kings Mountain in 2014 by Chelsey Philbeck. “As a child, I possessed a passion for crafting and creating. Following a traditional path, I secured a full-time job, got married, and started a family. Consequently, I transformed my passion into a small business, allowing me to become a full-time stayat-home mom working from home.

“Within the 11 years of balancing work and raising two boys, I outgrew my home workspace and opted to establish a storefront,” she continued. “I

am grateful for the journey God has guided me through. I enjoy interacting with the community and witnessing the confidence boost women experience when trying on attire that makes them feel exceptional. I take pride in my embroidery and boutique clothing and look forward to empowering women to feel more confident.”

NC to become the 7th most populated state by the 2030s

North Carolina is projected to become the 7th most populated state in the United States by the early 2030s, with an expected population of 11.7 million by 2030. According to a report from the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management (NCOSBM), the growth trajectory indicates that North Carolina will surpass the populations of Georgia and Ohio, leading to an additional congressional seat following the 2030 Census. Looking further ahead, the NCOSBM forecasts that the population will reach 15.4 million by 2060, which

reflects an increase of approximately 4.3 million individuals over the next 35 years, increasing the population roughly by a size equivalent to the Triangle and Triad today. The report outlines several significant observations regarding these population projections.

Since the 1990s, net migration—the difference between those moving to North Carolina and those leaving—has accounted for about two-thirds of the state's growth. This figure began rising during the 2010s as more baby boomers aged and birth rates declined. By the current

decade, net migration has contributed to over ninety percent of North Carolina's population growth. This trend is expected to continue, with all of the state's growth depending on net migration beginning in the 2030s.

The demographic makeup of North Carolina is evolving, with a growing portion of the population being born outside the state.

As of the 2023 American Community Survey, nearly 47% of North Carolinians were born outside the state, including 9% who were born outside the United States. Historically, the population

has primarily consisted of American Indian, African American or Black, and White or European groups. However, since the 1990s, there has been significant growth in Asian and Hispanic/Latino populations, leading to a more racially and ethnically diverse state. By 2060, these groups are expected to account for 48% of North Carolina’s overall population.

As the Baby Boomer generation transitions into retirement, an increasing number of North Carolinians will be aged 65 or older. Some of these older

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

Hayne Neisler is a keeper of Kings Mountain’s history. He posts stories about everyday Kings Mountain people, and I have gotten hooked on the posts he shares on the “Kings Mountain History” Facebook page. Here is a heartwarming post about a Kings Mountain woman who lost her son and was reunited with him years later. Here is the 1950 news article Hayne shared.

learned that a horrible hoax had been fostered upon her. She has now been reunited with the child, now a strapping Navy veteran, Eugene (Gene) Quinton, who lives with his wife in Lowell, N.C.

A Kings Mountain Mother’s Unbelievable Story

The mother is Mrs. Roy Harrill of Spartanburg, S.C.; in 1924, she was deserted by her husband, who took her other son, aged two, with him. The lonely woman left her infant son Eugene with a landlady and went to Kings Mountain to find work in a mill. When she returned a month later for the baby, the landlady had moved. Back she returned to Kings Mountain to work and save enough money to trace her, finally proving successful in Union S.C. There she was informed her baby had died, and she was led to view a small mound in a nearby cemetery, purportedly

the grave of her son. The mother was overwhelmed with grief.

Time dragged on for the frail woman who once had a husband and two sons. Six lonely years later, she learned her husband had abandoned the surviving child in Lockhart, S.C. She went there and returned with her eightyear-old son, Lonnie.

Meanwhile, much had happened to her son Gene; the baby was reported dead. He had been given away twice after the “first adoption.’’ Finally, a preacher asked for him. The pastor and his wife were advised against taking the child because nobody believed the baby would live as it had been neglected and underfed for so long. But the good couple took the boy into their home and, unable to learn his true name (Inman), gave him theirs - Quinton.

Herndon welcomed shoppers at their Mountain Street store that was between Neisler Brothers and the Imperial Mercantile downtown. The establishment kept evening hours by appointment to encourage shoppers and offered flexible financing. For $1 down, the store provided easy credit. Since most customers shopped locally, the owners did not list the address, just the street name, to guide customers. They did use their names in the ad, as folks often purchased from people they knew. The phone number was shorter then, too: Phone 348.

In 1941, Gene enlisted in the Navy at the age of seventeen. In 1942, he married Miss Ann Phillips of South Gastonia. His new bride was determined to aid Gene in his search for his mother and brother. But the trail was faint. He had found out his brother had been living in Spartanburg ten years earlier but finally got a tip that led him to Lonnie’s former home. The man answered the door and said ‘’ Lonnie is alive and well and living in Memphis. But his mother still lives here and is at work,’’ he told them, ‘’ but we’ll go right over and have her get off.’’ Down to the mill, they went. Roy Harrill went in and said, ‘’ Alice, ask your foreman to let you go home. I have a big surprise for you.” When they came out of the mill, Gene opened the car door, and she got in. ‘’Where are we going, Roy?’’ the woman asked her husband. ‘’Oh, just around the block,’’ he said. “But Alice, I want you to take a good look at this boy driving the car.” The woman looked at Gene, but there was no sign of recognition. ‘’Why?’’ she asked. ‘’Because that boy is your son! “ The car likely would have been wrecked had Gene not been able to pilot it to the roadside and park it. Hurried explanations covered much that had transpired in 26 years. Later, in the arms of her long-lost son, the mother, in tears, exclaimed, “Honey, if I could only tell you a part of what I am feeling, you still couldn’t understand.” What an incredible story of a mother and son reunited. Keep the stories coming, Hayne!

Spring Break, Get Your Point Across

Bad things can happen to anyone at any place and at any time. You don’t have to be in a distant country or on an island. It can happen anywhere in America and in any neighborhood. Predators and bad people exist and we are never exactly sure just how close they may be.

This is why we don’t take chances like walking around at three in the morning on a deserted beach or almost any town in America. I feel like my neighborhood is very safe but I’m clueless about who may happen to be driving through it at night or even during the day.

Famous last words that are often spoken are, “This is Mayberry. Nothing like that could ever happen here.” Sadly, it only takes one time for it to happen here, there or anywhere and a life is taken. A family is forever destroyed and a community mourns forever.

Eighteen- year-olds fight in our military. However, they are very supervised by Sergeants.

They are told where to be, what time to be there and exactly what and how to do it. Most of the time I felt my sons were safer in the military than driving around town after midnight.

An 18-year-old on Spring Break is most likely a long way from mom, dad or a dormitory supervisor. Often the temptation to just let go and go wild are too great. There is often plenty of alcohol available and often poor decisions are made. Perhaps like walking on a beach at three in the morning. That’s not necessarily a bad idea if you are with four of five other people that you know very well and who have your back. It’s not a good idea if there is a possibility that they might just walk off and leave you or lose track of what you are doing.

The missing University of Pittsburgh student in the Dominican Republic, Sudiksha Konanki was obviously a very smart girl majoring in biology and chemistry. The 20-yearold was last seen on a beach in Punta Cana on March 6th. Our hearts go out to her parents.

We have been reminded of the horrific Natalie Holloway murder. The 18-year-old American high school graduate from Mountain Brook, Alabama, disappeared from the Caribbean island of Aruba on May 30, 2005. She was murdered by Joran van der Sloot.

Parents and young adults should do Spring Break together. No one is going to say “No” like a like loving dad or mom. There is nothing better than having a dad to say, “Have your butt back here by 11:00” or “No, you can’t.”

Being a parent often involves being unpopular at times throughout life. It will be okay down the road when they are still alive and they come back to say thank you The reality is that 18-year-olds are adults and will do what they want to do. However, you don’t have to underwrite their travel, car, gas and spending money. You can also think of other ways to get your point across.

IRS offers safe tax preparation advice

With the tax deadline less than a month away, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is reminding taxpayers that choosing the right tax professional is essential to helping them avoid tax-related identity theft and financial harm.

While most tax return preparers are trustworthy and provide high-quality service, some engage in fraud, identity theft, and scams. Taxpayers must understand who they’re hiring and ask the right questions before handing over their sensitive personal and financial information.

Remember: Taxpayers are legally responsible for the accuracy of their income tax return, even if someone else prepares it.

The IRS provides essential resources to help taxpayers make informed decisions. The Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications, available at https://irs.treasury. gov/rpo/rpo.jsf, can help taxpayers find a tax pro who meets high standards. residents will be migrants drawn to North Carolina for its retirement amenities or proximity to quality healthcare and family. By the end of the decade, one in five North Carolinians will be at least 65 years old. By the early 2030s, the number of older adults will exceed that of children (ages 0-17) for the first time. The NCOSBM projects that by 2030, 2.4 million North Carolinians will be in this older age group, including over 3,000 centenarians. These figures are expected to rise to 3.4 million and 23,000, respectively, by 2060. Birth rates in North Carolina have slightly declined over the last decade, leading to a decrease in the preschool-age population (ages 0 to 4) by about 34,000 to a total of 598,000 in 2020. However, during this decade, a larger

Taxpayers should consider their unique needs to determine which kind of preparer is best for them.

The IRS offers free filing options to file electronically, summarized at https://www.irs.gov/fileyour-taxes-for-free. Eligible individuals and families can also get free help preparing their tax return from IRS-certified volunteers at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) sites, listed at https://www.irs.gov/ individuals/free-tax-return-preparation-for-qualifying-taxpayers. Taxpayers can generally qualify for VITA services if they earn $67,000 or less. TCE sites also offer free tax help but with priority assistance to people 60 and older. To find the closest free tax

The number of preschool-age children has already grown by over 8,000 and is expected to see an additional increase of 23,000 in the next five years, leading to a total of 607,000 preschool-age children by 2030—a rise of 3.8%. By 2060, the total is projected to reach 746,000, representing a 23% increase from today. In the early part of this decade, the population of primary and secondary school-age children increased by 17,000. However, growth will slow in the latter half, with an estimated 5,000 additional children by 2030, resulting in a total of 1,742,000 in this age group, up from 1,725,000 in 2020. A more robust growth rate for this group is forecasted for the long term, with an estimated 2.1 million children projected by 2060, marking an increase of 323,000 children from 2025 to 2060.

Taxpayers need to recognize red flags when choosing a tax professional.

Watch out for “Ghost” preparers. Be wary of anyone who won’t sign the tax return as the paid preparer and ask the taxpayer to sign and file the return themselves. The IRS requires tax preparers to sign returns, and not doing so is a red flag and may signal fraud. These “ghost” preparers may be looking to make a quick profit and promise large refunds or charge fees based on the refund amount.

These unscrupulous “ghost” preparers often print the return and have the taxpayer sign and mail it to the IRS. A “ghost” preparer will prepare the tax return for electronically filed returns but refuse to digitally sign it as the paid preparer. Taxpayers should avoid this type of unethical behavior as it can indicate fraud.

By 2030, it is anticipated that there will be 1.3 million individuals in this age group. A steady increase is expected through 2060, resulting in 1.3 million individuals, an increase of 222,000 (19.3%) compared to 2025.

In 2020, 65% of all North Carolinians, or 6.8 million people, resided in 22 urban or regional center/ suburban counties, leaving 35% (or 3,649,000 people) in 78 rural counties.

always choose a tax preparer with a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). By law, anyone who is paid to prepare or assists in preparing federal tax returns must have a valid PTIN. Paid preparers must sign and include their PTIN on any tax return they prepare. Here are some additional tips to consider when choosing a tax professional:

• Look for a preparer who’s available yearround. Questions may come up about a tax return after filing season ends, and contacting the preparer is helpful when needed.

• Review the preparer’s history using the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website at https://bbb.org. Look for disciplinary actions and the license status for credentialed preparers. For CPAs, check the State Board of Accountancy’s website; for attorneys, check with the State Bar Association. For enrolled agents, go to IRS.gov and search for “verify enrolled agent status” or check the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers by

visiting https://irs.treasury. gov/rpo/rpo.jsf.

• Discuss service fees upfront. Avoid tax return preparers who base their fees on a percentage of the refund or who offer to deposit all or part of the refund into their own accounts. Be wary of those who claim they can get larger refunds than their competitors.

• Find an authorized IRS e-file provider. They are qualified to prepare, transmit, and process e-filed returns. Filing electronically and choosing direct deposit can result in faster refunds, often within 21 days.

• Provide records and receipts. Trustworthy preparers will request proper documentation and ask questions to determine the client’s total income, deductions, tax credits, and other relevant details. Do not hire a preparer who e-files a tax return using a pay stub instead of a Form W-2. This practice is against IRS e-file rules.

• Understand the preparer’s credentials and qualifications. Attorneys, CPAs, and enrolled agents can represent any client before

the IRS in any situation. Annual Filing Season Program participants may represent taxpayers in limited situations if they prepare and sign the tax return.

• Never sign a blank or incomplete return. Taxpayers are responsible for filing a complete and correct tax return.

• Review the tax return carefully before signing it. Be sure to ask questions if something is not clear or appears inaccurate. Any refund should go directly to the taxpayer, not the preparer’s bank account. Review the routing and bank account number on the completed return and make sure it’s accurate. Taxpayers can report suspected preparer misconduct to the IRS using Form 14157, Complaint: Tax Return Preparer PDF. The complaint form is available online at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irspdf/f14157.pdf. If a taxpayer suspects a tax return preparer filed or changed their tax return without their consent, they should file Form 14157A, Tax Return Preparer Fraud or Misconduct Affidavit PDF, which may be downloaded at https://www.irs.gov/pub/ irs-pdf/f14157a.pdf

Tasty new Bill promotes official state cookie

Last month, the N.C. House proposed a bill to designate the Moravian cookie as “the official cookie of the State of North Carolina.”

Sponsored by Representatives Lambeth Paré, Kyle Hall, and Larry Potts, House Bill 124 proposed to adopt Moravian cookies as the state’s standard bearer. The Bill has been referred to the House Rules, Calendar, and Operations Committee.

Language in the Bill states, “Whereas, during the 18th century, settlers from the European kingdom of Moravia traveled to America and founded the town of Salem (now Winston-Salem) in North Carolina in 1766; and Whereas, when the Moravians settled in North Carolina, they brought with them a 6 spice cookie similar to the German Lebkuchen cookie; and Whereas, these thin spice cookies are known as Moravian cookies and made of 8 ingredients such as molasses, allspice, and ginger;

The Bill would help promote tourism in Winston-Salem and the state of North Carolina, as visitors are drawn to the area to experience the unique cultural heritage associated with the Moravian cookie. It is believed that the increased recognition and demand for Moravian cookies will lead to higher sales and revenue for local bakeries and businesses that produce and distribute these cookies, contributing to the local economy and creating additional jobs in the region.

Finding strength through rest for ones’ soul

How can anyone “strengthen himself in the LORD?” Throughout this month, we have been considering this question, following the example of David in 1 Samuel 30:6. In the midst of great distress, having lost his wives and children, and having his own men turn on him because they had lost theirs as well, David needed strength. And, in his weakness, he knew where to turn!

David’s Psalms provide a helpful guide as to how he found strength in the LORD, and how we may do the same. It is clear that David was devoted to both private and public worship of God. These were fundamental to his increasing strength of soul. It will be no different for us! When we are overwhelmed with a sense of weakness, whatever the cause, the remedy is turning to the LORD, Who is our refuge and our strength, and a very present in help in time of trouble. For David, public and private worship were rendered with sacrificial offerings before the LORD. As king, he brought the Tabernacle of the LORD to Jerusalem, so that sacrifices and prayers might be presented

to the LORD by the priests of God’s people in his capital city. Today, as believers in the New Covenant that is in Christ’s blood, Christians are collectively a “royal priesthood.” We need no other high priest than Jesus Christ in order to approach the throne of God in worship and in prayer. Hebrews 7:25 says that Christians .for them.” Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself for the sins of His people is final. No longer do we require priests in a temple to offer animal sacrifices on our behalf. The Old Covenant sacrificial law was fulfilled in Jesus’ crucifixion!

Here is the great blessing of the Christian life: In our weakness and need, Jesus invites us to come to directly to Him for

strength. His marvelous invitation in Matthew 11 includes a promise for all who, in their weakness, look to Him alone in faith for salvation: “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” How does anyone come to Jesus? Private and public worship offered in a perfunctory manner isn’t enough. The Bible calls us to come in repentance and faith. We come grieving our sin and all its misery, confessing our need for forgiveness, and trusting Him not only to wash away our guilt,

but to supply us with the “covering” of His perfect righteousness. When we faithfully come to Jesus, reading His word, praying to Him, and offering our worship both privately and publicly with others, He furnishes us with rest and strength for our souls! Where else would you look for strength? Many people in times of distress settle for empty religious rituals, the distraction of entertainment, or the dulling effect of substances or illicit behaviors. But these only further weaken us. They only serve to increase our misery. But turning to Jesus brings a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light. It is He Who strengthens our souls. Will you come to Him for strength?

Watchdog group warns about toxins in protein powder

As more people decide to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle, protein powder sales have increased significantly. This wildly popular dietary supplement continues to see enormous success. Consumers rely on it to lose weight, strengthen their muscles, accelerate post-workout recovery, and enhance their health and well-being overall. This makes finding clean protein more important for consumers.

While protein powder may appear to have promising benefits, not every product is safe to consume. Consumers should pay close attention to the protein powder ingredients listed on the label to ensure that they get the most out of their supplements. Here are some of the main dangers of taking conventional protein powder and how switching to clean protein can improve people’s lives.

Before buying a new protein powder product, consumers should be extremely wary of the toxic ingredients hidden inside their favorite supplements. However, the most toxic ingredients are never listed on the label.

The most common toxins found inside protein powder are heavy metals. These may include arsenic, lead, cadmium, and/or mercury. Studies have found that prolonged exposure to heavy metals may play a significant role in the development of certain degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis.

Many protein powder products also contain traces of pesticides, mycotoxins, BPA, and residual solvents. Traces of these substances are associated with a higher

risk of heart disease, cancer, hypertension, and immune system deficiency. Because even lesser amounts of these toxins can have a detrimental effect on human health, customers must take a closer look at the ingredients in their protein powder before making a purchase. Customers should be sure to seek out the right elements in their protein powder. First, the best protein powder should have a healthy protein ratio. Protein powders should contain at least 15-20 grams of protein per serving. Consumers should consult with their doctors first to ensure they get the proper amount of protein from their supplements.

Another crucial factor is amino acids. Many clean protein powders are fortified with amino acids to promote healthy muscles, improve digestion, enhance tissue repair, and increase energy levels.

When looking for healthy protein powder ingredients, avoiding artificial colors, flavors, and added sugars is vital.

Being proactive when shopping for protein powder is essential to staying healthy. Consumers can get the most out of their protein powder supplements by avoiding toxic elements and seeking out only clean ingredients. Finding clean protein also helps customers establish healthy habits that encourage them to lead cleaner and more wholesome lifestyles.

Clean Label Project™, a national non-profit with the mission to bring truth and transparency to food and consumer product labeling, issued the warning. The foundation of food and consumer product safety

in America is primarily focused on pathogen and microbiological contaminants. However, there is an increase in consumer, media, and academic attention being paid to the health consequences of exposure to heavy metals, pesticide residues, and plasticizers. Yet, consumers will never find this information on product labels. The Clean Label Project is committed to changing the definition of food and consumer safety through the use of data, science, and transparency. The organization awards brands with products that place an emphasized focus on purity and surpass the minimum regulations required by FDA. The Clean Label Project encourages brands to become part of the solution to address the growing consumer concern of industrial & environmental contaminants and toxins in food and consumer products.

Harper, of HarperCollins Publishers, has acquired North American rights to The Land of Sweet Forever: Stories and Essays by Harper Lee. Containing several unseen short stories from the early creative years of the legendary author of To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman, this landmark collection will be published on October 21, 2025. Casey Cep, Harper Lee's authorized biographer and the author of Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee, will write an introduction to the collection.

The Land of Sweet Forever contains eight short stories written before Harper Lee began work in earnest on the novel that would become To Kill a Mockingbird, during a period when Lee was submitting her short fiction to journals and periodicals.

The typescripts of these stories were among the papers Lee left in her New York City apartment upon her death in 2016. In 2024, the Estate decided to publish the stories alongside eight nonfiction pieces by Lee, which appeared in a range of publications between 1961 and 2006, collected together for the first time, and now brought back into the public eye.

The resulting collection offers a fascinating new perspective on an iconic and unique literary mind, one of America's most beloved authors. From the Alabama schoolyards of Lee's youth and the luncheonettes and movie houses of midcentury Manhattan to Lee's reflections on the responsible teaching of children and a delightful account of Gregory Peck and the To Kill A Mockingbird film set, The Land of Sweet Forever broadens our understanding of Lee's remarkable talent. The collection will prove

an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Lee's development as a writer as her craft defines itself across years and outlets before and after Go Set A Watchman and To Kill A Mockingbird—as well as a touchstone in still-vital conversations about politics, equality, travel, love, fiction, art, the American South, and what it means to lead an engaged and creative life.

Burnham comments: "To Kill A Mockingbird remains one of the most beloved novels in American literature. The discovery of these short stories, long believed to have been lost or destroyed, shows Harper Lee exploring the fictional avenues that she would eventually make her own, as well as less familiar Lee territory in Manhattan. This is a collection that will build on Lee's considerable legacy and deepen our ap-

Dr. Edwin Conner, Lee's nephew, reflects: "As a member of Harper Lee's surviving family, I know I speak for all of us in saying that we're delighted that these essays, and especially the short stories, which we knew existed but were only recently discovered, have been found and are being published. She was not just our beloved aunt but a great American writer, and we can never know too much about how she came to that pinnacle."

Michael Dean, the representative of the Lee Estate at Andrew Nurnberg Associates, writes: "The stories and essays collected in The Land of Sweet Forever ring with Harper Lee's inimitable voice and bring us closer than ever before to the life and work of one of the twentieth century's greatest authors."

FTC warns of fraudulent texts demanding toll road payments

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning consumers about a frequent fraud that mysteriously arrives as a legitimate-looking text message on your phone about urgent past-due toll road payments.

Whether you have driven through a toll recently or not, you might have gotten a text saying you owe money for unpaid tolls. It is probably a scam. Scammers pretend to be toll collection agencies from coast to coast and send texts demanding money. Do not be fooled. It is highly likely a scam.

You get a text unexpectedly saying you have unpaid tolls and need to pay them immediately. The misleading text might show a dollar amount for how much you supposedly owe and include a link that takes you to a page to enter your bank or credit card info — but it’s a phishing scam. Not only is the scammer trying to steal your money, but if you click the link, they could get your personal info (like your driver’s license number) and even steal your identity.

A phishing scam is a type of online fraud where scammers attempt to trick you into providing personal and financial information. They often use email or text messages that appear to be from legitimate

sources, such as banks or other trusted organizations. The goal is to steal sensitive information like passwords, account numbers, or Social Security numbers. If scammers obtain this information, they can access your email, bank, or other accounts, or sell your information to other scammers.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has also cautioned residents about fraudulent emails requesting payment for outstanding toll balances.

NC Quick Pass is a legitimate tolling service provided by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. They offer a transponder-based system that provides discounted tolls on North Carolina toll roads and express lanes. It warns, “Scams and bad actors are becoming more prevalent and the attempts to impersonate organizations and individuals is increasingly sophisticated.”

A scam website, identified as https://ncquickpassinvoice.com, imitates NC Quick Pass and poses as an official payment portal for tolls. Avoid it. The website is operated by crooks seeking your data.

NC Quick Pass offers two safe ways to pay tolls: a prepaid account with a transponder and a post-paid program with invoices. The prepaid account allows users to save up to 50% on tolls and provides the fastest and easiest way to pay tolls. The postpaid program

sends invoices by mail and includes potential fees and penalties if the bill is not paid on time.

If you are unsure about an email or text message claiming to be from NC Quick Pass, here are a few ways to verify whether it is legitimate:

• NC Quick Pass will never request payment by text.

• NC Quick Pass will only send texts from a secure short code 696277.

• All links associated with NC Quick Pass will include ncquickpass.com or secure.ncquickpass.com

The FTC provides the following advice to avoid a text scam like this. Do not click on any links or respond to unexpected texts. Scammers want you to react quickly, but it is best to stop and check it out. Check to see if the text is legit. Reach out to the state’s toll collection agency using a phone number or website you know is accurate, not the info from the text. Report and delete unwanted text messages. Use your phone’s “report junk” option to report unwanted texts to your messaging app or forward the suspicious texts to 7726 (SPAM). Delete the text and report the fraudulent message once you have checked it out. Learn more about spotting and avoiding text scams at https://ftc.gov/ textscams.

NC Attorney General and Feds move to end Google’s search monopoly

On March 7, North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson, a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general, and the United States Department of Justice proposed ending Google’s illegal monopoly over internet search engines and changes to restore competition to benefit consumers. North Carolina is one of the states leading the coalition of thirty-eight other states that filed this lawsuit in 2020.

“Google’s search monopoly violated federal antitrust law that has existed for more than a century to protect consumers and the marketplace,” said Attorney General Jeff Jackson. “The changes we’re proposing today would right Google’s wrongs and give control back to customers.”

Today’s revised proposed final judgment is similar to what the states and the Justice Department initially proposed last No-

vember after a judge ruled that Google has maintained a monopoly in online search and search text ads. As the governments note in their filing, Google’s actions have deprived “…American consumers and businesses of their right to choose among competing services, because Google has worked to guarantee that it always wins.”

The attorneys general and federal government are proposing a series of solutions that would end Google’s monopoly among search engines, ensure a competitive market for search engine services, and spur innovation. Those solutions would include:

• Banning Google from paying other Android partners or Apple to be the default search engine on any phone, device, or browser.

• Requiring Google to safely share the data and information that it obtained

through its unlawful monopoly power.

• Requiring Google to sell off its Chrome browser, an entry point to search services for many users.

•Prohibit Google from making Google Search or Google AI mandatory on Android devices, interfering with rivals’ distribution, or degrading rivals’ quality.

If these solutions are ineffective or if Google does not uphold the terms of the judgment, the government proposes requiring Google to sell Android. The states and the Justice Department would also be entitled to review Google’s potential future investments to ensure they do not harm competition in the marketplace.

A hearing on the proposed remedies begins on April 22 and concludes by May 2.

Free Ambetter

Y memberships

The North Carolina Alliance of YMCAs has partnered with Ambetter Health of North Carolina Inc. (Ambetter) to offer Ambetter members a complimentary YMCA membership starting January 1, 2025.

The Alliance worked with Y Enterprise Shared Services (YESS) and Ambetter to develop this partnership with an innovative per member, per month pricing model that expands access to the Y’s wellness programming for Ambetter members at no extra charge to them and supports the nonprofit Ys of our state through this insurance-based partnership.

Ambetter members who live far from a Y or prefer the convenience of at-home access may join YMCA360 at the Alliance’s website. YMCA360 offers a full suite of virtual programming, including more than 500 fitness classes, plus youth sports training and drills, mindfulness tips and practice, nutrition information and recipes, and more.

Ambetter provides health insurance to over 140,000 North Carolinians through the Health Insurance Marketplace where members can secure low-cost health coverage with an Advanced Tax Credit to subsidize monthly premiums. In addition to coverage for doctor visits, hospitalization, and prescription drugs, Ambetter members now receive the extra benefit of YMCA facility or digital access via YMCA360 to support overall health and wellness.

“The Y is a trusted community health partner,”

said Catherine Campbell, CEO of Ambetter Health of North Carolina Inc.

“We’re pleased to invest in Y memberships as an extension of our commitment to supporting the health and well-being of our members. With access to programs for children, teens and adults, our members can stay active and engaged through the Y’s network across the state. We’re proud to offer this valuable benefit to help our members lead healthier lives.”

For North Carolina’s YMCAs, this partnership brings the YMCA360 platform as an added member benefit for all their Y members. While some Ys have offered a virtual Y, many did not, and this partnership enables all NC YMCAs to provide members with additional digital programming.

“There are more than 110 branches across North Carolina, but not every county in our state Our work to provide YMCA360 digital access with the Ambetter Y membership provides added benefits to our Ys— and all of their members,” said Sheree Vodicka, CEO of the Alliance. “We hope that having access to Y programming online will open the door to even more insurance-based partnerships that help more North Carolinians access and benefit from the Y and its extensive programs and services for a healthy spirit, mind, and body.”

N.C. House Bill could impose social media restrictions for children

Children in North Carolina may soon face a ban on all social media if House Bill 301 becomes law. The Bill, titled "Social Media Protections for Minors Under 16," was introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly and passed by the Senate to protect minors under 16 from the negative impacts of social media. It proposes banning children under 14 from having social media accounts and requires parental consent for those aged 14 and 15. The Bill's sponsors emphasize the mental health benefits and improved focus for children without social media. As reported by WFMY-TV News 2, Representative Neal Jackson highlighted the cognitive and mental issues that kids are experiencing, including anxiety and a rise in suicide rates. Representative Jeff Zenger added, "We have all kinds of things that we prevent our kids from doing;

they can't drink until they're 21, they can't drive until they're 16, so why do we do that? We do that to protect them. We're looking out for their best interest; this is looking out for their best interest."

House Bill 301 outlines several key points:

• Age Restrictions: Children under 14 are prohibited from having social media accounts. Those aged 14 and 15 require parental consent to create accounts.

• Parental Control: Social media platforms must implement measures to verify parental consent for minors aged 14 and 15.

• Content Restrictions: Platforms must restrict access to certain content deemed harmful to minors.

• Data Protection: Enhanced data privacy measures for minors, including restrictions on data collection and targeted advertising.

• Enforcement: The Bill See BILL, Page 4B

BILL

From Page 2B includes penalties for social media companies that fail to comply with these regulations.

The Bill's sponsors believe that social media-free kids will have better social and mental health and improved academic lives. Joseph Blackholm, from the N.C. Values Coalition stated, "These algorithms are harming attention spans for children. They are losing the ability to focus; they are losing the

ability to do deep work because their brains are literally being rewired."

The Bill, filed on March 5, would ban anyone under 14 from having any social media account and force platforms to permanently delete existing accounts. Representative Jackson mentioned that platforms generally comply with laws like this and have followed similar laws in other states. "Platforms are good about abiding by the law," he said.

North Carolina House Bill 301 shares similarities with social media regulations in other states, but there are some unique aspects. For example, Utah requires age verification and parental consent for minors under 18 and imposes a "social media curfew" between 10:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Connecticut requires parental consent for users under 16. Arkansas mandates age verification and parental consent for social media use. Maryland bans personalized content for users under 16. California requires websites likely to be used by minors to estimate visitors' ages and provide privacy control. Louisiana clarifies liability for failure to perform age verification.

published online by the FDA in its Enforcement Report 96378.

On February 21, Danone initially recalled over 75,000 bottles of two flavors of International Delight coffee creamer after discovering the products were spoiled. The creamers were pulled from store shelves in 31 states, including North Carolina and South Carolina.

Last week, the FDA gave the recall a Class 2 risk level,

meaning that drinking the creamers “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” or that the possibility of serious health consequences is “remote.”

Since the best-by dates of the recalled products have not passed yet, the company is still urging customers to stop using the affected coffee creamers.

The recall includes two 32ounce flavors of International Delight coffee creamer: Hazel-

nut (UPC Code 04127102568, Lot Code 51-4114S) and Cinnabon Classic Cinnamon Roll (UPC Code 04127101993, Lot Code 51-4114 S). The recall affects 12,509 cases containing six bottles— for a total of 75,054 bottles of coffee creamer.

Danone recalled the coffee creamers because the products spoiled prematurely, resulting in a texture issue.

Danone only cited the quality problem, saying it recalled the creamers “out of an abundance of caution,” but the FDA mentioned additional issues. The agency’s report said Danone “received complaints of spoilage and illness with the use of the products.”

Other flavors of International Delight coffee creamer were also recalled recently. In

October 2024, over a labeling issue, more than 10,000 bottles of International Delight’s “Home Alone” Peppermint Mocha Zero Sugar coffee creamer were pulled from shelves. The bottles were labeled “zero sugar,” but the creamer contained sugar, creating a risk for people who limit or manage their sugar intake.

If you have the recalled International Delight creamers in your fridge, stop using them immediately. Danone said consumers can return the products to where they were purchased for a refund or replacement.

Customers with questions and concerns can also contact the International Delight Consumer Care Line at 1-800-4413321.

A tasty new Bill promotes an official state cookie

Last month, the N.C. House proposed a bill to designate the Moravian cookie as "the official cookie of the State of North Carolina."

Sponsored by Representatives Lambeth Paré, Kyle Hall, and Larry Potts, House Bill 124 proposed to adopt Moravian cookies as the state's standard bearer. The Bill has been referred to the House Rules, Calendar, and Operations Committee.

Language in the Bill states, "Whereas, during the 18th century, settlers from the European kingdom of Moravia traveled to America and founded the town of Salem (now Winston-Salem) in North Carolina in 1766; and Whereas, when the Mora-

vians settled in North Carolina, they brought with them a 6 spice cookie similar to the German Lebkuchen cookie; and Whereas, these thin spice cook-ies are known as Moravian cookies and made of 8 ingredients such as molasses, allspice, and ginger; and Whereas, the Moravian cookie is one of the most popular cookies in North Carolina; Whereas, Moravian cookies have been made and sold in Winston-Salem since the 1950s and millions of pounds of cookies are baked, packaged, and distributed worldwide annually; and Whereas, sales of Moravian cookies promote tourism in the State and contribute to the State's economy; and Whereas, it is

fitting to recognize the pos-

itive impact the Moravians have had on the State's culture by adopting the Moravian cookie as the official cookie of the State of North Carolina."

The Bill is expected to leave a positive "taste" in the mouths of North Carolina citizens, as it will positively impact local businesses, particularly those involved in the production and sale of Moravian cookies. The Bill would help promote tourism in Winston-Salem and the state of North Carolina, as visitors are drawn to the area to experience the unique cultural heritage associated with the Moravian cookie.

It is believed that the increased recognition and de-

mand for Moravian cookies will lead to higher sales and revenue for local bakeries and businesses that produce and distribute these cookies, con-tributing to the local economy and creating additional jobs in the region. Supporters contend that the Bill will foster an increased sense of pride and community among resi-dents, as the Moravian cookie is officially recognized as a symbol of the state's rich cultural history. After committee review and endorsement, the Bill is expected to advance through the House and Senate and arrive on the Governor's desk for his signature unless the legislation "crumbles" before becoming law.

Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about the IRS income tax filing requirements for retirees this tax season? My earned income stopped when I retired last March, so I’m wondering if I need to file a tax return this year. Retired in 2024

Dear Retired, Whether or not you are required to file a federal income tax return this year will depend on how much you earned last year, as well as the source of the income, your age and filing status.

Here’s a rundown of this tax season’s IRS tax filing requirement thresholds.

For most people, this is pretty straightforward. If your 2024 gross income –which includes all taxable income, not counting your Social Security benefits unless you are married and filing separately – was below the threshold for your filing status and age, you probably won’t have to file. But if it’s over, you will.

• Single: $14,600 ($16,550 if you’re 65 or older by Jan. 1, 2024).

• Married filing jointly: $29,200 ($30,750 if you or your spouse is 65 or older; or $32,300 if you’re both over 65).

• Married filing separately: $5 at any age.

• Head of household: $21,900 ($23,850 if 65 or older).

• Qualifying surviving spouse: $29,200 ($30,750 if 65 or older).

To get a detailed breakdown on federal filing requirements, along with information on taxable and nontaxable income, call the IRS at 800-829-3676 and ask them to mail you a free copy of the “1040 and 1040-SR Instructions for Tax Year 2024,” or you can see it online at IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf.

Check Here Too Be aware that there are other financial situations that can require you to file a tax return, even if your gross income falls below the IRS filing requirements. For example, if you earned more than $400 from self-employment in 2024, owe any taxes on an IRA, Health Savings Account or an alternative minimum tax, or get premium tax credits because you, your spouse or a dependent is enrolled in a Health Insurance Marketplace plan, you’ll need to file.

You’ll also need to file if you’re receiving Social Security benefits, and onehalf of your benefits plus your other gross income and any tax-exempt in-

terest exceeds $25,000, or $32,000 if you’re married and filing jointly.

To figure all this out, the IRS offers an online tax tool that asks a series of questions that will help you determine if you’re required to file, or if you should file because you’re due a refund. It takes less than 15 minutes to complete.

You can access this tool at IRS.gov/ Help/ITA – click on “Filing Requirements – Do I need to file a tax return?”

Or you can get assistance over the phone by calling the IRS helpline at 800-829-1040.

Check Your State

Even if you’re not required to file a federal tax return this year, don’t assume that you’re also excused from filing state income taxes. The rules for your state might be very different. Check with your state tax agency before concluding that you’re entirely in the clear. For links to state tax agencies see Taxadmin.org/fta-members.

Tax Preparation Help

If you find that you do need to file a tax return this year, you can Free File at IRS.gov/FreeFile, which is a partnership program between the IRS and

tax software companies. Your 2024 adjusted gross income must be below $84,000 to qualify. Or, if you have a simple tax situation and your income is below $200,000, or $250,000 if you’re married and filing jointly, you can now file your taxes for free through the new IRS Direct File program in 24 states at DirectFile.IRS.gov.

If you need some help, contact the IRS sponsored Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program, which provides free tax preparation and counseling to middle and low-income taxpayers, age 60 and older. Call 800-906-9887 or visit IRS.treasury.gov/freetaxprep to locate services near you.

You can also get tax preparation assistance through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide service at AARP.org/findtaxhelp or call 888-227-7669.
