Luminaries will glow on Christmas Eve from 5:30 p.m. until midnight at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

Santa will get a helping hand from the Kings Mountain Police Department this Christmas week to make the holidays merrier for many Kings Mountain area children with hundreds of toys do-

nated by the community piling up in the KMPD training room. “We are all Santa elves thanks to the generosity of this community, said Sgt. Lisa Proctor, who has chaired the event 12 years. Police will be doing some lastminute shopping with money donated

by caring citizens for school clothes for needy children and by Christmas Eve all the packages will be ready for kids to open on Christmas morning. A former KMPD D.A.R.E officer, Sgt. Proctor said she met former students in the program when she visited See SANTA ELVES, 7A

Over 6,000 luminaries will be lighted on Christmas Eve at Mountain Rest Cemetery, a tradition that began over 10 years ago in Kings Mountain. Volunteers are needed to set up the luminaries on the graves beginning at 2:30 p.m.Tuesday. Candles are set in holders and then lit as dark falls over the cityowned cemetery. Mayor pro tem Mike Butler and Public Works Director Rickey Putnam are organizers for this year's display. “Last year the luminary display attracted over 12,000 visitors to see this special Christmas event," said Butler, Ward 2 city commissioner. Traffic at the cemetery

will be monitored by the Kings Mountain Police Department to keep the vehicle traffic moving. Traffic will be routed on King Street into the cemetery at the East King Street entrance. Groups or individuals who wish to help set up lights should contact Rickey Putnam at 704-734-0735 or Mike Butler at 704-4731809. The luminary display is a feature of the “Home for Christmas- Kings Mountain celebration that began with the Children's Christmas Tree Lighting in November and continues into the New Year with the downtown Christmas Fantasy Light Show. Storm water fee approved 6-1 ELIZABETH STEWART lib.kmherald@gmail.com

Your February bills from the city will reflect the $2.50 storm water utility fee to inside-city residential customers and $2.50/2000 feet of impervious surface to inside-city commercial and industrial customers which city council passed Tuesday night by vote of 6-1. Ward V councilman Rick Moore pushed for commissioners to take a look at the fees again and vote next month but his motion died for lack of a second. Coun-

cilman Keith Miller's motion not to delay passing the ordinance because of state and federal mandates passed. Moore said that paying a $2.50 fee may not be hard for some homeowners but that businesses could be hit for as much as $200 a month. “That will put a strain on them and also on struggling churches," he said, adding that waiting another month to take action would have time for input from citizens and the city time to look at other ways to save money “instead of taxing our citizens and businesses. “I have looked at all the possibilities to avoid these fees which we feel are fair but we are mandated to establish a storm water utility See FEE, 7A

Butler elected mayor pro tem ELIZABETH STEWART lib.kmherald@gmail.com

It was a night of kind remarks by and for all officials, many of whom received standing ovations from the packed house. Kings Mountain City Council swore in three members Tuesday, and the new face was At-large commissioner Curtis Pressley. He took the oath from Judge Ali B. Paksoy Jr. as members of his family watched and his wife held the Bible. Ward 2 councilman Tommy Hawkins and Ward 3 councilman Mike Butler, both of whom voters returned to city hall for another term of four years, took the oaths, their wives holding the Bible and friends of the Hawkins family joining them for the ceremony.

Home is where you hang your hats DAVE BLANTON dave.kmherald@gmail.com

Don’t ask how many, because Dub Blalock lost count a long time ago. They come from minor league baseball teams and paving companies, the Amish Country and famous bars, tourist shops in South Africa and car dealerships three counties over. Hats, hats and more hats. Blalock’s cap collection has grown so large that they cover the walls of his large two-car garage on Dixon School Rd. Plus, he keeps a dozen or so more “signature caps completely out of the elements in a rec room upstairs. In many ways, the retired brick mason’s collection reflects his interests. He loves NASCAR and the late legend, Dale Earnhardt. Correspondingly, he owns about 25 caps related to The Intimidator and other racing icons like Larry McReynolds and Sterling Martin. The Kings Mountain native and his wife Carolyn love taking cruises, and he’s devoted a section of one his garage walls to caps from cruises they’ve taken together. “There’s a lot of stories up there, Blalock said, pointing broadly to his garage walls. He’s also a big sports fan in general – he’s on the board of directors of the Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame. He loves golf and Kings Mountain and ACC sports, especially the North Carolina Tar Heels. They’re all categorized neatly on his walls – rows and rows and rows of caps from many U.S. Opens and the handful of ACC teams and pro baseball teams that are his favorites.

Dub Blalock has so many hats they cover the walls of his two-car garage. Blalock, 75, admits that many of the items in his large collection were given to him by friends, family and business associates who know he can’t say no to a cap ‌ and will keep it forever. He’s got hats emblazoned with the Krispy Kreme logo, a Bass Pro Shops cap, one from the Reese’s candy people, a green St. Patrick’s Day-themed Clemson University cap and one that appears to represent a French rugby team. One of the hats on his wall is from the minor league baseball team his son played for the 1990s, the

Statesville Owls. One day about 25 years ago Blalock had a heart attack on the golf course. “The next thing I know I was in a helicopter on my way to Charlotte, he said, remembering the day clearly. It didn’t take long for the pilot of that helicopter to deliver a Charlotte Memorial Hospital cap personally to Blalock’s door as he was recovering. That was in the early days of his cap collecting, when he really didn’t know how big it would

grow. “I worked in homebuilding – that’s how it started, he said. “The people I did business with would give me a cap and I’d hold onto it. A cursory estimate brings the number of caps Blalock owns to more than 1,200. When he built a new house about seven years ago, the collection moved with him. So what’s Blalock’s everyday cap, the one he throws on to run an errand or go fishing? An emerald green Cheers cap, from the popular TV show and fa-

mous Boston bar, which he picked up while on a detour to visit Cooperstown some years back. Of course, he’s got a couple of hats from the Baseball Hall of Fame, too. Both Blalocks have a flair for collecting. They share a collection of more than 100 nutcrackers of different styles, and Carolyn keeps a room filled with Teddy Bears. As far as his cap collection goes, Blalock says it continues to grow all the time. “I got five last week, he said recently with a laugh.

I want to take some time to wish my best friend, my soulmate, and most of all my beautiful wife Denise Cobb a happy anniversary. It will be four years on December 21st that I gave my heart and all the love I could ever give anyone to you Denise. But, after four of the most amazing, greatest years I have ever had with you, I realize now that my heart and love grows more and more for you each and every day. I know we have had a very stressful year, but with our strength and our faith in each other, and especially in our savior Jesus Christ, we have and will overcome anything we face. Babe you are the most amazing woman I have ever known. I am so thankful and honored to be your husband. I know no marriage is perfect, but ours is as close as it gets. We know it’s that way because we are best friends first and would rather spend time together than with anyone else, and also because we put God in the center of our marriage. Babe, I really love us praying together each night, I also like being in our great church on Sundays together. These things are so special. Thanks babe for loving me when I didn’t love myself. Denise, words could never express how much I love you with all my heart. Babe you could look in all the world and you could never find a love as true as mine. You are an amazing wife, a great mom, and a super na-na. You mean so much to so many people. I look so forward to our future together, we will be in our house at the lake in a few weeks. No matter what we face in our future together, I have no doubt that all our dreams and hopes we have will come true. I will see to that. Our faith in Christ will see us through all things. I promise babe to make our life together better day by day. Denise you are my rock and, thank God, my wife. Thanks for the most amazing four years of my life. I Love you, Pete

Quote of the week...

Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn't come from a store.

~ Dr. Seuss

Thanks to all the elves The birth of Jesus, what a gift! in our community It’s one of our favorite times here at the Herald: letters to Santa from the children have been pouring in since Thanksgiving weekend! And the missives are full of reports of good (mostly) behavior and special requests and promises to leave treats for Santa, his elves and the reindeer. We’ve printed them this week for you. Some writers want the latest electronics, some still want dolls and bikes and guns; lots want new clothes and shoes and are pretty specific on colors. Many say it is a time for family to be together and wish that will be so. We feel sure most will get their wishes because parents try hard to bring a good Christmas to their homes. And, as we’ve reported in the last month, there are several groups in town that put forth a special effort each year to see that every child has a gift under the tree, and families have a warm Christmas dinner. We want to add our heartfelt thanks to these dedicated souls who care so much about the

children, and to all of you who have contributed toys and money. It is heartwarming that, in this Wendy Isbell depressed Publisher economy, the needs of others are being met by neighbors and friends. Which leads me to recognition of all those groups, large and small, whether funded by private or public donations, who provide food, clothing, gas, utility payments and other needs during the entire year. These people have dedicated their time and talents to the long term and are most appreciated. We want to send our wishes for a happy holiday season to all our readers and advertising clients, and our thanks as always to those who bring us your news to print. We are your community newspaper and we want to tell your stories. Merry Christmas to you all!

Letter to the Editor To the Editor: As you may be aware the City of Kings Mountain has passed a Stormwater Ordinance which establishes a Stormwater Utility as required by the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972 (Clean Water Act) and Federal Phase II Storm water Rules decreed under it. Also, rules of the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission decreed in response to Federal Phase II requirements, compel certain urbanized areas, including the City of Kings Mountain, to adopt stormwater controls as included in this ordinance, City of Kings Mountain's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit became effective December 1, 2011 and requires the city to adopt a local ordinance implementing stormwater controls on sites during and after construction activity and to establish a funding mechanism for the Stormwater Utility establishment and administration. To meet these Federal and State requirements the city has established a Stormwater Utility with fees to residential customers of $2.50 per month and fees to commercial and industrial customers of $42.50/2000 ft. of impervious surface. These fees will begin on the utility

bills that the customer receives in early February. These fees will apply only to those accounts inside the city limits of Kings Mountain. Any questions regarding the Stormwater Utility or the funding fees should be directed to the Stormwater Department at 704-734-4501 or stormwater@cityofkm.com. It’s only days until we officially recognize Christmas Day on December 25th. We’ve had constant reminders of the upcoming occasion since Beauford Burton mid-October. Guest Editorial And,although most of the reminders have come by newspaper, radio and TV ads promoting shopping deals, churches have also made efforts to keep us grounded for the season. The reality of the time of celebration is to Honor not only the birth of Jesus but also His life and death. God’s greatest gift to us was and will remain to be His Son, without whom there would be no salvation and no chance of eter-

nity in Heaven. God has given us too many gifts to enumerate, especially when you think of His gifts to individuals. But I feel safe in saying His most precious ones are His Son who died to wash away our sins, and His Word via the Holy Bible. In my opinion, His least precious was giving us choice because as humans we frequently make the wrong choices. Yet, whatever His plan He knows the why and He has listed the outcome from our choices. Just think about the awesome power of God Almighty. The One that really hung and moon and stars including our own sun. Oh, you’re going to have those that think the miracle just automatically happened with a sudden explosion and I suppose that’s the way God might have started the

construction of the infinite Universe but His Word says He created it and filled it with life in 6 days. Think too about a God who could, if He desired, wipe us out with one thought or swift blow. But, He again has His reason and timetable for our life here. Questioning anything God does is wasting the time we should be giving Him Glory and Praise for His Grace. My hope for everyone this Christmas is that we not let the bright lights of decorations blind us to the real joy of Christmas, and that is the Love of God. If you haven’t already, please accept His Son as your Lord and Savior and ask God to guide you in His path. At the risk of being politically incorrect, I bid you to have a Very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

American Universities – Taxpayer Lottery Winners A 501 (c) not for profit is normally a charity, church, religious community, service organization. It could even be Liberty University in Virginia Glenn Mollette that enrolls over Guest Editorial 50,000 students a year online and receives over 450 million dollars each year from the federal government. The money comes from the students who use federal aid to pay for their education. This happens in all states but usually on a smaller scale. The college or university eventually qualifies for a Council on Higher Education Association accreditation. Schools who want the free federal dollars jump through every hoop and dance every step necessary to keep their accreditation. A CHEA accreditation means mega millions to universities. This accreditation gives the school a federal college identification number that students use when filling out their FAFSA ( free application for federal student aid) for free govern-

ment money. FAFSA lets them know if they are approved to go to the school. Once approved – hooray! The school has won a lottery right from the American taxpayers pocket. The school over the next four years, may expect to receive as much as $40,000, $50,000, $70,000 or more. The school financial aid office must use a formula for those who are approved to apply to FAFSA. A determination is made about how much the family can pay. If the family can pay some then the student will receive less FAFSA. However, consider how many families that are in poverty in America and you are looking at least one third of our nation is qualified for free federal money. This means the student will receive a free ride for all four years of college - paid for by you. Students from middle class families who can pay some receive much less and some families make enough to where they do not qualify at all. Again, the middle class and those who work hard to make money in America pay out the most and receive the least amount of FAFSA and usually it's none. I would rather see our country spending more money on college

tuition than Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya and Iraq. Some of the best money our country is spends is on education. The problem is that federal tax dollars have become gold mines in American universities. Salaries of professors and those in administration have skyrocketed in recent years while Average America has been taking cuts or standing in unemployment lines. Colleges across America have taken a good thing too far. They have been living on Fantasy Island for too long. They build the finest buildings, pay handsome salaries to some professors who only teach three times a week and are mostly paid by your tax dollars. University Presidents and trustees must lead the way to cut college costs. Cutting college costs would ease some of the financial burden of the nation. All would benefit including the millions of families who often do not qualify for free federal money. Many of these working families see higher education as becoming almost impossible for their children. (Glenn Mollette is the author of “American Issues. Contact him at Gmollette @aol.com.

CLEVELAND COUNTY SCHOOLS holiday break Dec. 23 through Jan. 1.

■ MEDITATION “While [Mary and Joseph] were [in Bethlehem], the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid Josh Tucker him in a manger, bePastor cause there was no St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.”” (Luke 2:6-15) This is the third time in the birth narrative where angels deliver important news to God’s people. The first appearance came when the angel Gabriel shared with Mary that she had been blessed by God and is now pregnant with the Christ child. The second occurrence of angels in the story is in Joseph’s dream where the angel comforts Joseph and shares with him the news of Mary’s divine pregnancy. Now, in this part of the narrative the angels appear before the shepherds in the fields to announce the birth of Jesus, the Messiah. It’s apparent in the birth narrative, and in

other parts of Scripture for that matter, that angels serve a very distinguished purpose: to be God’s messengers. In these passages, angels are the ones who bring about news from God to his people on Earth. Angels personify what it looks like to praise God and offer hope and peace to those whom he favors. Angels continuously point to Jesus, sharing his coming and his presence in the world. The role of the angels in the story of Jesus’ birth makes me think of the angelic messages I may have received throughout my life. What angels have you encountered bringing you a message from God? How have you responded to God’s messages? This Christmas season let us hear the news the angels bring us. The coming of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord is the greatest message we have ever received. His love, grace and forgiveness for us is a message that we cannot afford to live without. Our response to this news is to share the good news with others. Thanks be to God for this message!

LUMINARIES: to light up Christmas Eve From page 1A Mountain Events Director Ellis Noell said that new elements have been added to the downtown light show on display nightly

along Railroad Avenue between Mountain and Gold streets and visitors will see additional changes from previous weeks, including two more songs, “Wizards in Winter by the Trans Siberian Orchestra and

Dean Martin's “Let It Snow. People viewing the downtown lights can park and tune their car radios to 101.5FM. Lights appear to dance from buildings and doorways thanks to com-

puter controlled technology and the talents of Scott Neisler and Donnie Beard, the City of Kings Mountain and a $10,000 grant from the Kings Mountain Tourism Development Authority.

COUNCIL: sworn in, Butler elected mayor pro tem From page 1A and the second meeting was for new business of the new board which included Spears’ successor, Curtis Pressley. Standing ovations were given twice to the mayor who was honored for 20 years service to the city and honored by council with naming of the Mayor Rick

Murphrey Children’s Park on Cleveland Avenue. It became emotional as background music was used in numerous scenes of children playing at the popular park, and the upbeat music of “Taking Care of Business in the slide show honoring the mayor for his leadership over 20 years, 13 as mayor. Spears was given a

standing ovation for his long service on the board and was recognized with a plaque and a gold watch. The new Murphrey Administration 8 was given a standing ovation. Commissioner Mike Butler was elected unanimously as the new mayor pro tem for two years succeeding Rodney Gordon, who has served two terms

and who conducted the special ceremonies honoring the mayor. Butler was also given a standing ovation by his co-commissioners and audience. A reception in the lobby afterward gave the newly sworn members of council and the mayor time to mingle with guests who enjoyed refreshments served by city staff.

MURPHREY: humbled by park designation From page 1A and featuring children at play at the park over the last 13 years, along with photographs of the mayor at special events. “Operation Playground was the project initiated by the mayor in January 2001 after he visited an area city park, came back home and named a steering committee. “We can do it and we will, he remarked to Commissioner Dean Spears, who went on city council the same year as the mayor, 20 years ago. Spears recalled the mayor’s excitement and diligent planning that brought 200 volunteers working together to build the park under the direction of Leathers & Associates of Ithaca, NY. Bob Leathers supervised the construction of a top quality wooden, splinter-safe and durable playground that kids helped design and community volunteers helped build. Members of the park steering committee included Curtis Pressley, Dean Spears, Ronnie Whetstine, Shearra Miller, Larry Hamrick Jr., Brenda

Lovelace, Stella Putnam, Jerry Hoyle, Sandra Murphrey, Ellis Noell, Dean and Gina Collias, Ronnie Humphries, Holly Robinson, Howard Shipp, Reg Alexander, Raeford White, Mary Ann Hendricks, David Ozmore, Jim Childers and Ray Knotts. “I am very humbled, said Murphrey, who said, “so many people worked together for the betterment of the children and we’ve done a lot of projects since but this project was special. He added, “Kings Mountain is such a loving and caring community. A second surprise presentation to the mayor was a “Getting Down to Business, music slide show which featured pictures of the mayor at numerous industry announcements, dedications of city building projects including the police department, senior center, Fire Station II, and Patriots Park, (to name a few of the big projects that the mayor has led over the years) and pictures at his desk at city hall, working with employees and in the community. Rick Murphrey was elected to

Kings Mountain council 20 years ago. Thirteen years ago he was elected mayor and has been re-elected since. “We are honoring the mayor tonight for 20 years of service to Kings Mountain, said Gordon, who said he had been researching information about the children’s park and suggested to council that the mayor deserved to be honored for his long leadership to the city as the chief elected official. He presented a plaque from council in recognition of this service. “He never missed a photo op, laughed Spears, whose last meeting as at-large city councilman was Tuesday, reminiscing about the mayor’s service. “It takes teamwork, said the mayor. He added, “When new industrial and business prospects come to town I tell them and show them what good stuff we have. Murphrey called Spears “a man of integrity and honor who has been here to support the city and presented a plaque and a watch to Spears on behalf of the city council.

SANTA ELVES: making Christmas merry From page 1A elementary schools recently. She said police gather lists of names of needy children from the schools that don’t include the large numbers also being helped by churches and organizations. With people out of work, generous people are stepping up to help the less fortunate. What are some of the toys at KMPD that children will like? It appears that the most wanted doll is a Monster doll who is edging out La La Loopsy and Barbie on the Santa wish list. Then, there is the dolly that giggles, Tin-

ker Bell, and don’t forget Hot Wheels, Huffy bikes, games of all descriptions, remote control cars and much, much more. Why do police take on this project every year? “It’s a way for us to give back to the community and we love it, said Proctor. She added, “These kids are going to be so happy, we’re getting toys from folks in Kings Mountain and last week some folks brought toys from the Clover and York, SC areas. Police “elves are boxing up the toys for delivery and say if more are donated they will be delivered to a needy child by Christmas Eve.

FEE: approved for storm water utility by 6-1 vote From page 1A which this council approved tonight,'' said city manager Marilyn Sellers. She said that delay in implementing the new fee could cost the city $34,000 a month for each month’s delay. Miller said he knew of one city that had been fined $11 million. “We've got great reserves," said Moore. But Sellers said the reserve fund is for emergen-

cies. She said that by law the city can't exempt utility customers but customers may qualify for credits. The seven-member council, mayor and city staff held a lengthy workshop on the fees schedule last week. None was happy with adding the additional fees but said it is mandated by the state and federal government and must be implemented to avoid high fines to the city.

How Medicare Covers Alzheimer’s Disease Dear Savvy Senior, What all does Medicare cover when it comes to Alzheimer’s disease? My wife was recently diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s and I would like to find out what’s covered and what’s not. Researching Spouse Dear Spouse, Most medical costs to treat beneficiaries with Alzheimer’s disease are covered by Medicare, but unfortunately long-term custodial care costs that most patients eventually need are not. Here’s a breakdown of what Medicare does and doesn’t cover when it comes to Alzheimer’s disease, along with some tips that can help you plan ahead. For the most part, ongoing medical care to diagnose and treat Alzheimer’s disease is covered by Medicare Part B, including visits to primary care doctors and specialists, lab tests, speech and occupational therapy, home health care and outpatient counseling services. Medicare pays 80 percent of these costs, and you will be responsible for the remaining 20 percent after you’ve met your annual $147 Part B deductible. Inpatient hospital care is also covered

under Medicare Part A with a $1,216 deductible and coinsurance. And, as part of health care reform, Medicare is also covering 100 percent of annual wellness visits, which includes testing for cognitive impairment. Most Alzheimer’s medications are covered under Medicare’s Part D prescription drug plans, but plans vary on copayments. If you have a Part D plan, use the Medicare Plan Finder tool at medicare.gov/find-a-plan to compare your plan’s total drug costs against other plans to be sure you’re getting the best coverage. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a chart on coverage for common Alzheimer’s drugs – go to alz.org and type “drug chart in the search field to find it. Many seniors are surprised to learn that Medicare does not cover long-term custodial care. This includes nursing home care, the costs of assisted living facilities and adult day care. Medicare does, however, pay for some shorter-term nursing home care, but only up to 100 days following a three-day inpatient hospital stay. Hiring home help for bathing, toilet-

ing and dressing (this is known as custodial care) is not covered by Medicare either unless your wife is also receiving skilled-nursing care or physical or occupational therapy to help with the recovery from an illness or injury. To help with these costs, you may want to consider a long-term care insurance policy. Or if your income and assets are very limited, you may qualify for Medicaid. See longtermcare.gov for a breakdown of long-term care planning options. In the final stages of the disease, Medicare Part A covers nearly all aspects of hospice care, including doctor services, nursing care, drugs, medical equipment and supplies, physical and occupational therapy, homemaker services, counseling and respite care. To qualify, a doctor must certify that a patient has six months or less to live. If you don’t have a Medigap (Medicare supplemental insurance) policy, you should consider getting one. A Medigap plan will help pay for things that aren’t covered by Medicare like copayments, coinsurance and deductibles. To search for plans in your area, visit

medicare.gov and click on “Supplements & Other Insurance or call Medicare at 800-633-4227 and ask them to mail you a free copy of the “Choosing a Medigap Policy publication 02110. Or, if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (like an HMO or PPO), your plan must give you at least the same coverage as original Medicare does, but make sure your doctors are in your insurer’s network to avoid excess costs. Also find out whether you need a referral or prior authorization before getting care. If you can’t afford your Medicare out-of-pocket costs, or need help with medication expenses, there are government programs that can help. Go to benefitscheckup.org to search, or contact your Eldercare Locator (800-677-1116) who can refer you to local services to assist you. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior book.

KM sweeps Burns, Crest here Friday for big 3A game

Swimmers break three records Kings Mountain High’s swimmers were the overall winners and broke three long-standing school records in Thursday’s meet at Neisler Natatorium. Austin Toney established a new record of 55.55 in the 100-yard butterfly; Kaitlyn Moss set a new mark of 5:33.74 in the 500 yard freestyle and Moss, Bethany Wilson, Kimberlee Farris and Kassidy Hamrick set a new mark of 1:49.58 in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Kings Mountain’s combined score of 240 led all teams. Shelby had 220, Chase 116.5, R-S Central 91 and East Rutherford 43.5. Kings Mountain finished #1 in the girls events with 112 points, followed by R-S Central 83, Shelby 70, Chase 64 and East 32. Shelby topped KM 150128 in the boys events. Chase swam third with 52.5 points, followed by East 11.5 and R-S 8. Kings Mountain had 10 first place finishes, including the above-mentioned record-setters. Other first places came from Wilson in the 200 free (2:21.01) and 100 back (1:08.41), Austin in the 200 free (1:48.26), Moss in the 200 IM (2:17.09), Farris in the 50 free (28.50), Jordan Bullins in the 500 free and Rory Gengler in the 100 breast (44.83). Finishing second for the Mountaineers were the girls 200 medley relay (Wilson, Moss, Farris and Kassidy Hamrick), the boys 200 medley relay (Marshall Reynolds, Toney, Sam Baker and Will Quinn), Baylee Stroup in the 50 free, Hamrick in the 100 fly and 100 free, Josh Pressley in the 500 free and Bullins, Reynolds, Quinn and Aaron Oakley in the 400 free relay. Third were Bullins in the 200 IM, Bullins, Baker, Oakley and Toney in the 200 free relay, Reynolds in the 100 back, Farris in the 100 breast and Stroup, Hannah Ellis, Skylar Woodard and Courtney Johnson in the 400 free relay. Fourth were Christian Adams, Gengler, Adam Satterfield and Chris Accers in the 200 medley relay, Adams in the 200 free, Stroup in the 100 free, Quinn in the 100 back and Satterfield, Josh Brucker, Pressley and Adams in the 400 free relay.

Kings Mountain’s Monique Petty is clipped by a Shelby player in game Wednesday at Parker Gymnasium.

Girls edge Shelby 42-38, boys fall to unbeaten Lions Kings Mountain High’s basketball teams split a SMAC twin bill with Shelby Wednesday night at Parker Gym with the girls winning 42-38 and the boys losing 81-58. Kings Mountain’s girls saw Shelby erase a 10-point deficit in the fourth period, but they got some big rebounds and free throws in the final minute by Monique Petty to post their second victory in two nights against county rivals. With Shelby dominating the boards and KM missing numerous close shots, the Lady Lions chipped at the deficit until they knotted the score at 38-all with a minute and a half remaining. Kings Mountain had led by seven points at the 4:31 mark but did not score another field goal. But Petty battled much taller Shelby inside players for three key rebounds down the stretch and sank four of six free throws to seal the win. Tiffani Thompson’s rebound with 12 seconds left sealed the win. “We had a 10-point lead and they just kept chipping away, said KM Coach Mike Harris. “We were fortunate to close it out with some made free throws. Petty scored 20 pointand grabbed 14 points and Thompson had 11 points and 16 boards as the Lady Mountaineers improved their record to 2-1 in the SMAC and 6-1 overall heading into a game last night at Draughn. “Playing back-to-back nights was tough, said Harris. “Shelby packed in their 2-3 zone and their height gave us some problems. It sure seemed like we out-

Kings Mounain’s James Tillman dunks the ball in last week’s game with Shelby. played them more than what the final score showed. Kings Mountain’s boys led only once, at 19-18 following an old-fashioned three point play from James Tillman early in the second quarter. The Mountaineers hung close, though, trailing by just 32-25 at the half and 4037 following a Tillman basket with 3:24 left in the third period. But Shelby went on a run and led 54-40 going into the fourth period. Tillman, who recently returned to the lineup after suffering an early-season injury, continued on a tear with 27 points and 13 rebounds but the Moun-

taineers just couldn’t keep pace with the quick and talented Golden Lions, who got 35 points and 19 rebounds from Gabe Devoe and used an intense pressing defense to force the Mountaineers into numerous turnovers. Kings Mountain fell to 12 in the SMAC and 4-3 overall heading into last night’s game at Draughn. GIRLS GAME KM - Petty 20, Thompson 11, Smith 6, Hutchens 2, Wade 2, Ellis 1. S - Coleman 11, West 11, Boyd 5, Littlejohn 4, Hall 3, Hamilton 2, Gaston 2.

All wins are important, but in a split conference such as the SMAC 2A/3A wins against teams your own size are extremely important for state playoff seeding purposes. With just three 3A teams in the SMAC, Kings Mountain’s games with county rivals Burns and Crest take top billing. The Mountaineers got off to a good start against their 3A counterparts Tuesday night by sweeping Burns at Lawndale. Wins in their final pre-Christmas games against Crest Friday at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium would give the KM teams the upper hand on their rivals heading into the stretch run of the season. The KM teams had little trouble with the Bulldogs as they got off to great starts and won by big margins. The Lady Mountaineers built a 31-11 halftime lead and rolled to a 59-34 win. Monique Petty led the KM attack with 14 points. Tiffani Thompson scored 12 points and Taquisha Smith and Alesia Wade added 10 each. “We played very good defense and we rebounded well, said KM Coach Mike Harris. “We felt like we needed to guard the threepoint line and we did a

pretty good job of that. The Mountaineers led from start to finish in a 8758 win. They built a 26-11 first quarter lead and went into intermission up 47-30. They outscored Burns 27-12 in the third quarter to break the game open. Chad Sanders led the Mountaineers with 23 points. James Tillman and Josh Sherer registered double-doubles, Tillman with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Sherer with 12 points and 10 assists. Freshman Josh Helton contributed eight points and four blocked shots. It was Kings Mountain’s first SMAC win after suffering a close loss to a very good East Rutherford team the previous Friday. BOYS GAME KM - Tillman 21, Sanders 23, Sherer 12, Helton 8, Skidmore 6, Bullock 6, Adams 5, Crocker 2, Cole 2, McClain 2. GIRLS GAME KM - Petty 20, Thompson 11, Smith 10, Wade 10, Hutchens 4, Ellis 4, Sh Roberts 3, Nelson 2. Mike Huffstickler - The Galloping Ghost 1963 teammates recall Kings Mountain’s last undefeated team with star running back A group of football players from Kings Mountain High’s last undefeated team honored one of their own Tuesday. Mike Huffstickler, the star running back on KM’s 1963 team that went 9-0-1 and shared the Southwestern Conference title with Shelby, was visited by teammates Steve Baker, Jim Medlin, Bo Goforth, Steve Goforth and Jim Owens at the Life Enrichment Center. Huffstickler, who rushed for over 1,000 yards his senior year, is known at the LEC as “The Galloping Ghost. Baker, who got to thinking about the ‘63 season during this past season when the Friday night games fell on the same date they did in ‘63, made arrangements with KMHS Coach Greg Lloyd to provide Huffstickler with a jersey bearing the number 22, which Huffstickler wore during his three-year varsity career with the Mountaineers. Coach Lloyd also produced a new KM hat. Huffstickler wears a KM hat just about everywhere he goes, and he took his old one off and put on the new black and gold one. Although he has been battling dementia for quite a while, Huffstickler remains

Teammates from the unbeaten 1963 Kings Mountain High School football team got together Friday at the Life Enrichment Center to present star running back Mike Huffstickler with a Mountaineer hat and a number 22 jersey. Huffstickler wore number 22 when he was a 1,000-yard rusher on the ‘63 team that finished 9-0-1 and won the Southwestern Conference championship. one of the Mountaineers’ biggest fans. He never missed a Mountaineer game until his health began declining, and he still attends every home game. Baker, who followed Huffstickler as KM’s star tailback in 1964, said Huffstickler was a tremendous football player and has always been a tremendous person. Baker said he remembered that Coach Bill Bates’ commented before the season that he had always wanted a tailback that could allow him to install his wing-T offense, and Huffstickler was the man! He would become the school’s last 1,000 yard rusher until 1979 when Kevin Mack came along. Bates, who coached that ’63 team and the ‘64 team to back-to-back championships and a combined record of 19-1-1, used to tell the story of how he broke in superstar quarterback Pat Murphy his sophomore year. Bates believed in giving quarterbacks a series of plays to run and brought Murphy into his office to give him the opening series of plays for their game with East Rutherford. Bates told Murphy, “now if you forget the play, just give the ball to Huffstickler. He’ll get us the yards we need. Bates often referred to Huffstickler as a runner who could “smell the end zone, meaning that if the team got inside the five Huffstickler would score. Baker recalled that Kings Mountain had gone from 1958 through 1962 without a thousand yard rusher. Bates took over as head coach in 1962 after John Gamble resigned due to health reasons. In the summer of ‘63 Bates told players they would have to run the mile in a certain time or they wouldn’t make the team. “Mike came to me and he was worried he wouldn’t be in shape to run the mile, Baker said. “So all summer a bunch of us worked out every day. We ran that hill at East School until we couldn’t run anymore. “And that was the first year Coach Bates gave us high-top shoes and Mike was concerned that he couldn’t run in those shoes. But he was in the best shape ever. The hard work got him ready for that unbelievable season we had. He never seemed to get tired. He was always ready for the next handoff. Our whole season revolved around Mike Huffstickler. He was the centerpiece of our offense.

GROVER- Knox Neely has been a resident of Grover for 67 of his nearly 95 years. Folks know him as the town’s oldest veteran who served in the Army during World War II from Jan. 14, 1942 until his honorable discharge on Oct. 27, 1945. “I wish I could have marched in the Grover Christmas parade in front of the American flag but I use a walker now, said Neely, who said he was honored to participate with the seven other WWII veterans as grand marshals. He is the senior member of that honored group which included Sidney Dixon, Ed Campbell, Howard Swofford, George Melton, Les Roark, Bill Favell and Gene Putnam. He is the only living charter member of the Grover Rescue Squad. Moffett and Edna Neely sent two sons to war. Knox and his brother, Campbell, both served in Uncle Sam’s Army in World War II. Knox is the last surviving sibling, which included six sisters and one brother. Neely served in the South Pacific during the war years, came home, married his sweetheart Margaret Beam whom he started courting after they met at Minette Mill. Obviously, it was love at first sight. They were married 64 years before her death July 9, 2011 and lived on Mulberry Road, where he and son, Mike, reside. Margaret Beam Neely worked 42 years at Minette and Knox worked 37 years. They raised two children: Mike, of Grover, and Vickie (Mrs. Craig) Hoke of Columbus, Mississippi. The Neely home shows some of his expertise at woodworking. He built cabinets for many years but what he enjoyed most was his bluebird houses – 500 of them which he sold and mostly gave away. He also built picnic tables. “I kept three bluebird houses and they are in the kitchen, keepsake items, he said. “I got a letter from my sister Rebecca when I was stationed at the Panama Canal and she told me that her brother-in-law, Leon Garner, had the same address that I had

KNOX NEELY and could I look him up, recalled Knox. He was in A Platoon and Knox was in C. “It’s a small world, sure enough I found him and we had a good time, said Neely. Neely said he worked on his family farm in York County, SC, before being drafted in the Army. He recalled that in the late 1940s wages in the textile mills were 16 cents an hour. Times were different, he said. “We didn’t lock our doors, life was simpler. Neely says he has voted in most Presidential elections. He said his son gave him a ride to the polls during the most recent election and a poll worker came to the car with his ballot. Knox is a member of Bethany Baptist Church, a former treasurer, choir leader and deacon. He watches church services on TV, and also enjoys the History and Discovery channels. “I really enjoyed the Grover Christmas parade, said Neely. He waved to friends he hadn’t seen in a while and God-willing he’d like to do it again next year.
