Heisler bound for New York! DAVE BLANTON dave.kmherald@gmail.com
The scenery’s about to change in more ways than most for Kayla Heisler. The KMHS senior will soon trade in country roads and a low-density population for the busy streets and ceaseless buzz of life in the big city to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional writer. Heisler, who dreams of working for magazines and penning novels someday, heads to New York City in August where she’ll enroll in The New School, a storied liberal arts college located in the artsy Greenwich Village neighborhood. The varsity volleyball player and yearbook staffer knows going off to college in one of the world’s largest and culturally diverse cities is a big step.

“I’m excited. The opportunities that I want are there. It’s the next logical move for me, referring to Big Apple’s status as a media center. Already, she says, she’s got her eye on the internship possibilities that abound in New York, the home of thousands of magazines and publishing houses. As for life outside of class, the bright-eyed and confident 18-year-old seems to have no fears about making friends in a place where she currently has none. Most of her classmates are pointing themselves to in-state schools. And no one else in the entire graduating class is traveling so far to attend college. “Actually, yeah, most of my closest friends are going to N.C. State, Heisler said. Which means she’ll have to catch them on breaks or keep in touch via Facebook or Twitter, where she and many of her friends are active. Most Kings Mountain students headed off to college in the fall won’t be far from home. Western Carolina University, located in Cullowhee, UNC-Charlotte and Cleveland Community College, in nearby Shelby, are the most likely destinations, said KMHS school counselor Leigh Kendrick Bell. Heisler is no stranger to moving around. She See HEISLER, 4C

Henderson doesn’t let obstacles stand in her way BETH BROCK beth.kmherald@gmail.com
Jessica Henderson was in elementary school when her mother had the first heart attack, with Jessica home alone with her. Jessica knew to call emergency services, and her mom was transported to the hospital, which subsequently saved her life. From then on, Susan has been in and out of the hospital with various heart issues. Jessica knew she could count on her
dad to be there for her while her mom was hospitalized. But July 12, 2012, an event occurred which changed the entire Henderson family’s lives. Terry, Jessica’s dad, had a massive stroke in Asheville and was immediately taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville. Since then, Terry has been in and out of hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes, and at home. Because of his agita-
tion, Terry has pulled out feeding tubes, nose tubes, and picc lines (where the IVs are inserted). The Hendersons have tried to get Terry admitted to over 20 different nursing facilities, but each one tells them the same thing – he is way too combative. With all the other challenges Susan has had to face, stress has proven to be too much for her, and she has experienced two strokes since March of
this year. While her mother was recovering from the strokes, Jessica has tried to take care of her dad while keeping up with her schoolwork and activities. Jessica’s grandmother has been able to assist a lot in caring for her mom and dad. While her mother was in the hospital, Jessica stayed at home alone in order to continue going to school, but would visit with her mother after school. Several months ago, Jessica was awarded an A.C.E. award from the Exchange Club in Shelby and she is entered in the district contest which awards a $1,000 scholarship. The A.C.E. awards are given to students who
have overcome obstacles and give back to the community while maintaining good grades. She is in the National Technical Honor Society at Kings Mountain High School.
Jessica hopes to start college in a community college, in order to continue to help her parents, and eventually wants to attend the Art Institute for Culinary Arts. She would See HENDERSON, 4D

HEISLER: New York bound, with her eye on journalism From page 1C was born in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and lived in the beach town for the first 11 years of her life. Then her family spent a brief stint in Columbia, S.C. Since then she’s lived in Kings Mountain, where her father is a rural mail carrier and her mother is a stay-at-home mom. Heisler is the youngest child, with three brothers all in their twenties. Although Heisler is an excellent student with a strong athletic bent, her high school years weren’t free of frustration and strain. She spent much of her freshmen year menaced by a painful autoimmune disorder – dermatomyositis – that caused extreme muscle weakness and kept her out of school and off the volleyball court. “I was hurting all over, pretty much all the time. At first I attributed it to sports and prac-

tice. But I was having difficulty swallowing. It got so bad that … doctors had to put a feeding tube in.” Prolonged stays at Duke University Medical Center in
Durham and a Charlotte hospital were ultimately required to put her on the mend. Heisler says she’s fully recovered now, but still must stick to a regimen of medicine to keep the disease
at bay. The New School, a private college with strong traditions in social research, art and theater, has an undergraduate enrollment of about 6,000 and a
graduate enrollment of about 3,500. Some notables who have attended the Manhattan college? Academy Award winning actor Marlon Brando and writer Jack Kerouac, whose iconic novel “On the Road” helped define a disillusioned generation coming of age following World War II. “U.S. News and World Report” recently ranked The New School No. 1 in the nation for small class sizes, and No. 1 in the nation for international student enrollment. Heisler, who earlier this week was chatting about her big move in a mostly empty classroom, appears more than ready for whatever life, The New School and New York throw at her. “I remember the quote that ‘real life is stranger than fiction’ and I think that’s probably true.”

Senior projects help students look to the future ELIZABETH STEWART lib.kmherald@gmail.com
Kings Mountain High School seniors spent countless hours and wrote reams of copy to complete senior projects. The goal is to give students a chance to explore a field or occupation they may have interest in. They are graded for their work. The grade makes up a big portion of a senior’s final English IV grade, a class they must pass to graduate. But each semester, as senior projects are turned in for their final counts, students go beyond the call of exploring an area of interest. In the process they look to the future. Naeemah James, 18 “I love to cook,” says Naeemah James. So it was natural for James, a student in Foods II at Kings Mountain High School, to choose something to do with culinary arts management that she plans to pursue as a student at Art Institute in the Raleigh/Durham area of the state. “Fad Diets vs. Healthy Eating” was the subject of her project. She reached out to Summit Place and added color in the dining room in the form of floral arrangements while working with dieticians to complete her project. Naeemah also completed SERVSAFE certification in food safety this semester at KMHS and found that one of her real loves is baking and decorating cakes. At KMHS she was Homecoming Queen last October, played in the KMHS band six years and sang with the chorus this year. She is active in Family Community International Leaders of America and in First Baptist Church of Lawndale.
Naeemah is the daughter of Candice and Ronnie McKinney. Carsyn Bolin, 18 Caryn Bolin started cheerleading with Kings Mountain Optimists at age 5 and dancing at age 2 and hasn’t stopped. The vivacious senior loves what she does and does what she loves. Cheerleading at KMHS softball games for three years and at football and basketball games for one year and teaching at Dance Reflections keeps her busy. “I’ve been dancing 14 or 15 years and I love it,’’ she said. Her senior project was interacting with Alzheimer residents at Summit Place in Kings Mountain. The topic of her paper was “Alzheimer Disease” and she learned lots, she said, while volunteering at the facility several times a week and researching the disease. Carsyn plans to enroll this fall at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and major in Middle School Education. At KMHS, she danced in the musical, “Wizard of Oz” and was active in Spanish Club, Student Participation Organization, and Health Education Career Students (HECS.) Daughter of Jeff and Kelly Bolin, she has helped out at the family day care center. She is also active in First Wesleyan Church. De’ajsha Adams, 17 A career in the military is the dream of De’Ajsha Adams, who is beginning that goal by joining the Army National Guard. This summer she will be training in Oklahoma and then in advanced infantry training in Virginia. She hopes to see the world in her chosen field, begin-
ning with the Kings Mountain National Guard. Daughter of De’Etta Wright and Marquis Adams, she runs track at Kings Mountain High School and also plans to attend Gaston College. She has three brothers: De’Andre Adams, 19; Donterious Adams, 16; and Marquis Adams Jr., 10. The family is active in St. Peter Baptist Church in Grover. “The Benefits of Athletics Organization” was the topic of De’Ajsha’s senior project. A volunteer with cheerleading teams, including the Elite basketball team, she wrote about the importance of athletics in a person’s life and the joy that association and attending sports events brings to a well-rounded education. Dionté Byers, 19 When Dionté Byers walks across the stage at John Gamble Stadium to receive his diploma he will mark a milestone in his life for many reasons. “I have been on my own since the age of 14,” says the proud and happy young man who sings baritone with the Kings Revue at KMHS and has enjoyed music since age 7. “I don’t give up,’’ said Byers, who credits his strong faith in the Bible with his success. The grandmother he affectionately calls “Mama Pie” and his sister, Shanti, 23, and brother, Romeo, will be in the audience for graduation, as well as a girlfriend and other friends. “Teenage Vehicle Safety” was his senior project and he worked with Kings
Mountain Police Department Ptl. Jason Dee. He learned how to be safe as a driver/ passenger in a vehicle, observed police equipment and also wrote “don’t text while driving” and like most students recently at KMHS pledged not to text while driving. He looks forward to graduation and is keeping his fingers crossed for a PELL grant to that he can attend Gaston College for two years and transfer to N.C. State University to study mechanics and technology. Dionté likes to cook and his celebration dinner with his girlfriend may be steak with all the trimmings. Andrew Buchanan, 17 “It’s real cool what we do at our church for missions,” says Andrew Buchanan, whose senior project was “Importance of Foreign Aid to Missions.” Family Worship Center of Kings Mountain is a big sponsor for missions in Zambia, Africa, and Buchanan handed over letters to missionaries and met Ezekiel when he visited the church recently to thank the congregation for their generous support of missions. Andrew worked with a member of his church on the project. Andrew works 10 hours a week at Mauney Memorial Library as a shelver. That’s an important job, says the library staff, to place books back on the shelves and keep inventories. Son of Thomas and Tina Buchanan and grandson of Cornelia Buchanan, has a sister, Ciera, 18. Big in soccer at KMHS, he has been a member of the Beta Club for two years, and on the National Technical Honor Society. He has studied drafting and architecture for three years and plans to study engineering/drafting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
With so many options, sometimes what to do next is a difficult decision DAVE BLANTON dave.kmherald@gmail.com
Chase (left) and Ryan Hullender are pictured here with their mother, Kim, before their senior prom. The boys have many options but remain undecided about where to attend college.
It was decision time a few weeks ago for collegebound seniors all over the country. But KMHS students and twins Chase and Ryan Hullender just can’t seem to pull the trigger on any precise plans for further education. “I’m chronically indecisive,” said Chase, who applied and was accepted to a dozen schools, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNCWilmington, East Carolina University and the College of Charleston. “It makes everything much harder.” Brother Ryan is less anx-
ious about having no solid plans yet for the summer or fall. “I’m still deciding what I’m going to do. Just not absolutely sure yet,” he said as the two 17-yearolds talked earlier this week about their plans and dreams. Whatever the fraternal twins decide, it’s unlikely they’ll take up one another as counsel or wind up in the same place. “We’re completely different,” Chase said. Outside of a small core group of friends they’ve both known since early childhood, “we have a very different circle of friends.” Chase’s interests run toward science and academ-

Meanwhile Ryan says what motivates him is finding a career that excites him and keeps him on the move. Lately, he’s been thinking he might attend a local community college to take classes in law enforcement so that he can become a police officer. “I’ve had experience working. A job can get boring after a while. I don’t want anything that’s going to get boring.” Neither of the twins particularly relishes leaving Kings Mountain. They say they’ll miss their friends and playing soccer for the Mountaineers. “I’ll have to See HULLENDERS, 6D

Simmons to serve in the Army BETH BROCK beth.kmherald@gmail.com
Allison Simmons has thought for years that after she graduated from Kings Mountain High School she would go to college. This changed on the day that Army Recruiter, Sergeant Tyo visited Allison’s class and talked to them about the Army. By the end of the presentation, Allison was ready to join the US Army! She went home and discussed this option with her mother who has been very supportive. Her father was a little hesitant, because she’s still his little girl, but Allison says he knows that she is headstrong and will
Allison Simmons will be off to the Army in September. do what she wants, so he’s “ok” with it now. Tuesday, May 21, Allison went to Charlotte to be sworn in at M.E.P.S. She had to be there for her physical at 5 a.m., and was sworn in at 2 p.m. She will be reporting to Fort Jackson, SC, in September, and looks forward
to her experiences in the Army. She will be at Fort Lee in Virginia for her Advanced Individual Training. While in school, Allison has been working at Weiner Works to help pay for gas and other expenses. She has enjoyed working with the drama department throughout high school, and hopes to continue working in theater. After serving two years in the Army, she plans to be a paralegal specialist. Allison is the daughter of James and Judy Simmons and the granddaughter of Nell Lowery. She has two brothers, Alex, 25, and Austin, 19, and one sister, Alyssa, 21.
Hullenders: many options = tough decisions From page 1D start talking to new people. I’ll have to grow up a little bit,” Ryan said. Chase, who says he won a number of out-of-state soccer scholarships but wasn’t interested in living far away, says he’s “nervous about leaving everything behind. The thought of a new chapter is scary.” When pressed about what college he’ll pick, Ryan says he’s leaning toward UNCWilmington because of its strong programs in marine biology. Those are two of his strengths: “science, animals.” He’s also
been feeling that Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., would be the right place for him, for the same reasons. “He changes his mind a lot,” says mother Kim Hullender. The two seniors, who share much genetically but apparently much less in terms of worldview, have an easy way with each other and don’t appear to see themselves at competition. Still, arguments sometimes arise. “They don’t really last that long,” Ryan said. “It’s usually over the smallest and stupidest stuff.”

Christine Phanhly applied her curiosity and compassion about homelessless to volunteer at a soup kitchen. Lexie Hurd, mindful of the dangerous phenomenon of school bullying, reached out to students in the community to try to nip the practice in the bud. Tyler Herndon believed that sports and extracurricular activities are so important to students overall performance in high school that he became a coach to some of the youngest soccer players in the area. Amid the relief of wrapping up last classes and spring exams and the excitement of graduation preparations, KMHS seniors presented their graduation projects for final judging recently, and these are just a sampling of what for many may hint at career choices down the road. The projects, which range from job shadowing to volunteering to ambitious welding presentations, are designed to get students thinking about life after high school and how they may be able to use their talents. For most students the projects represent a labor of love. That’s not to say that many aren’t dreading the public speaking part. That’s where they must explain their choices and elaborate on their results before a panel of three judges, usually comprised of business leaders or former teachers and administrators. “I was really, really nervous,” said Phanhly, who worked at Central United Methodist’s soup kitchen for many afternoons over the winter and spring. She intends to pursue a nursing degree. mograms are essential to screening for breast cancer, said she intends to pursue a nursing career. She seemed to welcome the challenge – of the research involved and the experience of speaking to strangers. “I practiced a lot. I kept getting tongue twisted when I practiced with my friends,” she said. “(But) now I’m prepared for the future.” That’s the idea, say administrators and mentors who are involved in annual rite. “The purpose of all of this is to get students thinking – about how they can contribute,” said Marcie McCready, who teaches 12th grade English and supervises graduation project for all seniors. “It’s supposed to be a learning process.” Phillip Quinn, who has an interest in sports writing and local athletes, helped write a four-part series of profiles about recent Kings Mountain Hall of Fame inductees for the Herald. “It involved him doing a lot of research here,” said Gary Stewart, the newspaper’s longtime sports editor who also served as Quinn’s mentor. “He did a good job.”
