Employees and patrons of Catawba Two Kings Casino in Kings Mountain and casino consultant Delaware North have donated more than $6,000 worth of toys – 1,437 toys in all – to the regional Toys for Tots campaign to provide holiday toys to deserving children in York and Cleveland counties.

This is the second consecutive year that the casino and Delaware North have coordinated the Toys for Tots drive at the casino. Jennifer Elberson, director of marketing for the casino, oversaw the promotion of the drive with donation boxes placed at the casino.

The donation was coordinated with regional representatives of Toys for Tots and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, which operates the program nationwide.

“On behalf of Catawba Two Kings Casino, I want to

thank our patrons, employees and Delaware North for helping make this a very successful second year of contributing to Toys for Tots,” said Kathy George, president of the Catawba Nation Gaming Authority. “These toys are going to help many children in Cleveland and York counties have a wonderful holiday who otherwise might not have.”

“Delaware North has supported the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign at some other casinos we operate across the country, so we were excited to be able to join the Catawba Two Kings Casino employees and the Catawba Nation Gaming Authority in this effort,” said Chuck Kilroy, lead consultant for Delaware North.

Heating assistance for qualified families

Cleveland County Department of Social Services is now taking applications from individuals who need financial assistance with paying their heating bills.

Each eligible household may receive up to a maximum of $600 per year for heating and cooling assistance combined.

This is a federally-funded program and the total amount that Cleveland County received for heating and cooling assistance this year was $547,000. Of this total funding, $264,000 was paid to 1,342 households for cooling assistance this past summer. That deduction leaves a remaining balance of $283,000 in the County’s emergency fund to pay for heating bills this winter.

To be eligible to receive financial assistance with heating, a household must:

• Be located in Cleveland County

• Have at least one U.S. citizen or non-citizen who meets the eligibility criteria

• Have income equal to or less than 150% of the

federal poverty limit

For example:

• For a household of one, an income of $18,732 or less

• For a family of four, an income of $38,628 or less

• Have a health-related issue that might be made worse without heat

• Have a utility bill that shows how much is owed to the utility company

• Be responsible for their heating cost

Each household is individually evaluated, and if determined eligible for assistance, payments are made directly to the household’s utility company. Each household can receive a maximum of $600 per year in heating and cooling financial assistance. For example, if a household received $200 for cooling assistance this summer, they would be eligible to receive up to $400 more for heating assistance this winter.

This program provides a total payment to the utility company on behalf of the person who has applied and

determined to meet eligibility requirements. However, many utility bills bundle electric or heating with water, sewage and/or trash. This program provides financial assistance for the portion of the bill that covers heating. The purpose of this program is to resolve the financial crisis caused by the heating bill. If the total utility bill has fees associated with other utilities (trash, water, sewer), that portion of the bill must be paid before the applicant can receive financial assistance for heating, or else the crisis that the household is facing will not be resolved.

Last year, Cleveland County provided heating and cooling assistance to 2,775 applicants for a total of $588,000.

For more information on the program and eligibility, visit www.ncdhhs.gov/ assistance/low-income-services/crisis-intervention. You also can call Cleveland County’s Department of Social Services at (704)

‘… an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:20-21

Life is full of unexpected circumstances.

Joseph had planned everything out and all was in place for him to marry his soonto-be-bride, Mary. But then the unexpected happened… we all know this story. Can you imagine what must have gone through Joseph’s mind once he got the news about Mary before the angel of the LORD came to him in a dream? I am sure he experienced betrayal, anger, heartache, and tur-

moil. Thanks be to God, everything changed for Joseph when God entered his life in a dream. The words of God that came through an angel comforted and changed his life forever. He along with Mary would be the earthly parents responsible for Jesus, the Savior of the world! When God came into His life, he was transformed.

Here’s the truth for all of us, God entered the world a couple thousand years ago as a baby, Jesus! The world has never been the same, people are now able to know God personally, experience God in similar ways as Joseph did

in his dream, and be transformed and saved from sin in Jesus Christ. There is so much beauty and love in the Christmas story, and it is wonderful to be able to celebrate the birth of Jesus every year.

However, the birth of Jesus is to be celebrated and lived everyday. Jesus brought the joy of God to the world when he came, and if you live for him, you too can have joy!

“and those the Lord has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sigh-

ing will flee away.”

Isaiah 35:10 NIV

Everlasting joy is what we carry with us through all the ups and downs of life. We may not always be happy in this life, but we can live in the joy that comes from being changed and transformed by the One that has created us and sets us free from sin!

May we celebrate the Savior and King that came as a baby boy so many years ago and live our lives in the everlasting joy that comes only through Jesus!

CCC named Best Community Colleges in North Carolina

Higher education resource guide releases the best community colleges for

2023

Intelligent.com, a trusted resource for program rankings and higher education planning, has included Cleveland Community College on its list of the Best Community Colleges in North Carolina in

2023.

The research identifies top schools in the state based on tuition costs, the number of credits required to graduate, and the online coursework delivery format.

Intelligent.com implemented a unique methodology that ranks each institution on a scale from 0 to 100 across six categories. The scoring system compares each school

to tuition costs, admission, retention and graduation rates, faculty, reputation, and the student resources provided for online students.

Studies show that obtaining a degree increases income substantially, with graduates earning 84 percent more than those with only high school diplomas or those without a completed GED. The percentage difference in

earnings continues to grow with higher learning degrees such as master’s, doctoral or professional degrees, with the unemployment rate decreasing to as much as 1.6 percent for those with a doctorate. KM tops Huskies by

Kings Mountain began taking control of the game in the final minute of the third quarter to take the lead over the visiting Hunter Huss Huskies and went on to an important 69-62 win in a Big South Conference battle Friday night at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium.

It was the second win over a strong Gaston County opponent – the other being Ashbrook – to open what looks to be an exciting conference race for the 2022-23 season.

KM’s opening BSC opponents, along with the South Point Red Raiders and Crest Chargers and, of course, the Mountaineers appear to be ready to make this race one of the closest in many years.

With the Huskies up 45-44 with just over a minute remaining in the third period KM freshman Bradley Floyd, who would finish with a game and career-high 37 points, drove the lane and was fouled while scoring. He added the free throw to put the Mountaineers up 47-45 and they never trailed again.

The big key, though, just may have been the outstanding defensive play of the Mountaineers that followed. The home team controlled the boards, limiting the Huskies to just one shot at the basket.

A bucket by Qua Sanders to open the fourth quarter increased the lead to 49-45. The Mountaineers were able to gradually increase the lead the rest of the way.

Curtis Simpson’s bucket, followed by a pair of free throws by Floyd got the Mountaineers up 61-52 midway of the quarter and Bryson Brown’s bucket stretched the lead to double See HUSKIES, Page 2B

KM Middle Lady Patriots volleyball wins fourth straight championship

Kings Mountain Middle School’s volleyball team won its fourth straight TriCounty Conference championship last week with a 3-0 sweep of North Lincoln, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23.

“This victory was especially sweet since we lost our first match of the season to North Lincoln by a score of 3-1,” noted head coach Lindsay Ellis. “I told

the girls then the comeback is always stronger than the setback and they fought for it all season long, beating them the next two times 3-0 with one of those times being in the championship match.

“Relentless adorned the back of their warm-ups all season and this team embodied every single bit of that word,” she added. “This

was a rebuilding year for us, and they improved so much throughout the season. It has truly been a magical thing to be a part of. I am so proud of who they became as players but also who they became as people.”

Leaders in the championship match were:

- Campbell Benton with 12 kills, nine digs, a block, 10 service points and two

aces.

- Jillian Patton with 12 assists, 13 service points, five aces, 25 digs and two kills.

-Avaclaire Moss with 13 service points, seven digs, four aces and nine assists;

-Avery Cruise with 16 service points, six aces, an assist and 23 digs;

-Ava Broome with nine service points, five aces,

one assist and 38 digs;

-Kaylee Mull with 21 digs; and, -Jaylee Woodward with seven kills.

“Honestly, this win was an entire team effort,” Coach Ellis said. “We could not have had so much success this season if it wasn’t for every player on our roster.”

Cruise qualifies for state meet

Kings Mountain’s indoor track team competed in two meets last week.

The Mountaineers traveled to Bunker Hill to participate in their Polar Bear meet.

Kings Mountain was led by Hunter Cruise’s winning and state qualifying

10 feet pole vault. Cruise also finished first in the 1000m run and ran a leg on the winning 4x800 meter relay.

Other impressive finishers were Max Thompson, who was second in the mile, and Isaiah Watts who was second in the 1,000

and third in the mile.

For the Lady Mountaineers, Divinity Ervin finished first in the 3200 meter run with a 13:40. Brooke Waseman finished second in the 500 meter run.

Tuesday, the KM runners traveled to Wedding-

ton’s Polar Bear Meet and was the only 3A school in a sea of powerful 4A schools.

Although temperatures were much colder the Mountaineers were led by Max Thompson’s second place mile finish in 4:51. Alex Jackson came in

third in the shot put with a throw of 40’10”.

Nic Horn and Hunter Cruise tied for fourth in the pole vault at 9’6”.

Brooke Waseman was the top runner for the KM ladies. She finished seventh in the 500 meter run.

The Grinch makes a visit to town

The Grinch arrived at Mauney Memorial Library on Wednesday, December 14 at 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, by Sigmon Theatrical, immersed musical performance and featuring Grinch, his dog Max, and Cindy Lou Who.

The children watched in wonder at the classic story unfolded before them utilizing live actors, puppets. Audience participation was encouraged as those in attendance helped Grinch’s heart grow three sizes as he leaned the true meaning of Christmas.

“Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.

Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!

And what happened then? Well, in Whoville they say

That the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day!

Christmas Day is in our grasp So long as we have hands to grasp.

Christmas Day will always be Just as long as we have we.

Welcome Christmas while we stand Heart to heart and hand in hand.” Merry Christmas!

Prepare now for winter weather

Winter Weather Preparedness Week was Dec. 4 - 10 and Governor Roy Cooper is encouraging North Carolinians to plan and prepare now, before potentially dangerous winter weather arrives.

“Winter weather predictions across North Carolina can be challenging, which means we all need to be prepared by updating emergency preparedness kits and reviewing our family’s emergency plan,” Governor Cooper said. “Residents should stay informed by paying attention to trusted and official sources of information regarding weather forecasts and alerts.”

While warmer and drier than normal conditions are favored across North Carolina due to La Niña conditions likely continuing throughout the winter, this does not mean that wintry precipitation will not develop across the state, leading to potentially icy roads and other hazards.

Governor Cooper urges residents to monitor winter weather conditions and forecasts by listening to local media and paying close attention to winter weather watches, warnings, and advisories. While the criteria for these may vary across North Carolina the premise is the same so remember:

• Winter Storm Watch is

issued when conditions are favorable for either heavy snow, sleet, or freezing rain within the next 24-48 hours.

• Winter Storm Warning is issued when confidence is high that a winter storm will cause significant impacts within the next 24 hours.

• Winter Weather Advisory is issued when wintry weather is expected and residents should exercise caution as light to moderate amounts of snow, sleet, or freezing rain are expected within the next 24 hours, causing travel difficulties.

To help ensure you are ready for winter weather, North Carolina Emergency Management officials urge you to:

• Always keep at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food and a supply of medication in your home.

• Keep fresh batteries on hand for weather radios and flashlights.

• Dress warmly. Wear multiple layers of thin clothing instead of a single layer of thick clothing.

• Properly vent kerosene heaters and ensure any electric generators are operated outside and away from open windows or doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never burn charcoal indoors.

• Use a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radio or a weather alert app on your

phone to monitor changing weather conditions.

• Keep alternative heating sources and fire extinguishers on hand. Be sure your family knows how to use them.

• Store an emergency kit in your vehicle. Include scraper, jumper cables, tow chain, sand/salt, blankets, flashlight, first-aid kit, and road map.

• Make an emergency supplies kit for your pet and include medical records, first-aid kit, enough canned/ dry food and water for three to seven days and pet travel bag or carrier.

• Do not leave pets outside for long periods of time.

• Ensure your pet has a well-fitting collar.

• Bring pets inside when temperatures drop below freezing.

• Move livestock and other animals to a sheltered location with food and water.

If you must travel during bad weather, emergency officials remind motorists to leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles and, if driving on snow- or ice-covered roadways, reduce your speed. If conditions worsen, pull off the highway and remain in your vehicle. Do not set out on foot unless you can see a building close by where you can take shelter.

Winter has officially arrived

Wednesday, December 21 marks the first day of winter, the astronomical moment when the Sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn, and we have our shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere in terms of daylight, according to Farmer’s Almanac.

The term “solstice” comes from the Latin words sol (Sun) and sistere (to stand still) because, during the solstice, the angle between the Sun’s rays and the plane of the Earth’s equator (called declination) appears to stand still.

Upon the winter solstice, the Sun appears at its lowest in the sky, and its noontime elevation seems to stay the same for several days before and after this day. The Sun’s gradual decrease in the sky reverses upon the winter solstice, marking what many cultures believe to be a “rebirth” of the Sun as the hours of daylight become longer.

Essentially, daylight hours (the period of time between sunrise and sunset each day) have been growing slightly shorter each day since the summer solstice last June, which is the longest day of the year (at least in terms of light). December

21 marks the start of when days will begin to grow longer. They will continue to do so until we reach the summer solstice again in June. Then the cycle will begin anew.

While we celebrate the winter solstice, those living in the Southern Hemisphere will be simultaneously marking the arrival of summer. That’s because while our half of the globe is inclined away from the Sun, their half is inclined toward it. Being tilted away from the Sun brings us shorter days and colder temperatures

Free telemedicine program launched to increase access to COVID-19 treatment

People who test positive for COVID-19, particularly those who are uninsured or don’t have a primary care doctor, will have better access to treatments thanks to a time-limited telemedicine program launched by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with StarMed Healthcare. After a positive test, early treatment is key to avoiding

severe illness and hospitalizations, and treatment may even reduce complications from post-COVID conditions, also called long COVID.

“More than 1 million people in North Carolina don’t have health insurance, which has made accessing care for COVID-19, as with other diseases, very challenging,” said NCDHHS Secretary Kody H. Kinsley.

Shelby awarded $750,000 Downtown Revitalization Grant

Governor Roy Cooper announced today that 42 local governments in rural areas across the state have been awarded grants from the Rural Transformation Grant Fund, supporting rural economic development projects in North Carolina. Under the Downtown Revitalization Grant category, City of Shelby was awarded $750,000.

A total of $19.76 million will be issued in this second round of grantmaking from the Fund, which helps local governments overcome challenges that limit their economic competitiveness. The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan, signed by President Biden last year. The North Carolina Department of Commerce and its Rural Economic Development Division administers the fund.

“More support for North Carolina’s rural communities is on the way with these transformative grants, made possible by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “These funds, backed up by the expertise of our rural development team at the Department of Commerce, will bring more economic opportunity to people across the state.”

The Rural Transformation Grant Fund, the centerpiece of a broader Rural Engagement and Investment Program from Commerce, addresses a wide variety of needs, from revitalizing downtown districts, building the capacity of local government staffs, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering small business recovery, and generally supporting economic growth initiatives.

The Rural Transformation

Grant Fund awarded grants in four categories today:

• The Downtown Revitalization category supports downtown development initiatives that help grow and leverage a community’s commercial core into an asset for economic growth and prosperity.

• The Resilient Neighborhoods category offers grants focused on community development and quality of life improvements, such as eliminating food deserts, creating healthy living initiatives, and increasing access to affordable housing options, among other initiatives.

• The Community Enhancements for Economic Growth category provides grants to local governments to smooth the way for economic development opportunities, such as the acquisition of land and buildings, the preparation of business sites, and the removal of structural and physical barriers that may be limiting development.

• The Rural Community Capacity Building (RC2) category provides educational and professional development opportunities for local government staffs, with the additional ability for local governments to then ‘apply what they’ve learned’ by developing funding proposals for projects in their local areas.

“Extensive preparation and planning are the key ingredients for economic development success,” said North Carolina Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders. “I’m pleased to see this second round of grants go out to help our rural communities reach the next level of growth.”

Treat early to prevent hospitalization

If you test positive and are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19, treatments are available. In a new CDC study, adults who were prescribed Paxlovid for mild to moderate COVID-19 were over 50% less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19.

CDC researchers assessed electronic health record data and found that receiving Paxlovid was associated with a lower overall hospitalization rate across age groups, whether they were vaccinated or not.

Paxlovid is recommended for people who are more likely to get very sick and hospitalized with COVID-19, especially older adults and those with multiple medical conditions, regardless of vaccination status.

As we enter the holiday season, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself and others from serious illness with COVID-19, including staying up to date on COVID-19 vaccines and promptly talking to

your healthcare provider about treatment options if you test positive for COVID-19.

If you have COVID-19 symptoms:

• Test: Use a self-test, locate a test site, or find a Test to Treat location.

• Talk: If you test positive, talk to a healthcare professional to determine if you are eligible for treatment, even if your symptoms are mild right now.

Treat: Start treatment within five days of developing symptoms.

Paxlovid is not a replacement for COVID-19 vaccination. COVID-19 vaccination makes you much less likely to get very sick. Still, some vaccinated people, especially those ages 65 years or older or who have other risk factors for severe disease, may benefit from treatment if they get COVID19. A healthcare provider will help decide which treatment, if any, is right for you.

As we celebrate this holy season, let’s remember to treat one another with kindness, love and understanding. We hope you’ll join us in the true spirit of the season with prayers of peace and goodwill toward all mankind. From our flock to yours, go our best wishes for a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.

Dear Savvy Senior, What tips do you recommend for long-distance caregivers? I help take care of my stubborn 86-year-old mother who still lives at home about 150 miles from me.

Need Advice

Dear Need, Providing care and support for an aging parent who lives far away can present a variety challenges that can make the job difficult and stressful. Here are some tips and resources that may help you.

Long-Distance Caregiving

When it comes to monitoring and caring for an aging parent from afar, you have a couple of options. You can hire a professional to oversee your mom’s needs, or you can manage things yourself by building a support system, tapping into available resources, and utilizing technology devices that can help you keep tabs on her.

If your mom needs a lot of help, you should consider hiring a geriatric care manager who will give her a thorough assessment to identify her needs and will set up and manage all aspects of her care. But geriatric care managers are

expensive typically charging between $100 and $250 per hour after an initial assessment of $150 to $750 and are not covered by Medicare.

To find a geriatric care manager in your mom’s area, visit AgingLifeCare.org or contact the nearest Area Agency on Aging (call 800-677-1116) to see if they have a list of providers.

If, however, your mom only needs occasional help, or if you can’t afford to use a care manager, here are some things you can do yourself to help her.

Create a care team: Put together a network of people (nearby friends or family, neighbors, clergy, etc.) who can check on your mom regularly, and who you can call on from time to time for occasional help. Also put together a list of reliable services you can call for household needs like lawn care, handyman services, plumber, etc.

Tap local resources: Most communities offer a range of free or subsidized services that can help seniors with basic needs such as home delivered meals, transportation, senior companion services and more. Contact the nearby Area

Aging Agency to find out what’s available.

Use financial tools: If your mom needs help with her financial chores, arrange for direct deposit for her income sources, and set up automatic payments for her utilities and other routine bills. You can also set up her online banking service, so you can pay bills and monitor her account anytime. Or, if you need help, hire a daily money manager (AADMM.com) to do it for you. They charge between $25 and $100 per hour.

Check essential documents: This is also a good time to make sure your mom has the following essential legal documents: a will; a living will and healthcare proxy, which allows you to make medical decisions on her behalf if she became incapacitated; and a durable power of attorney, which gives you similar legal authority for financial decisions, if needed.

If she doesn’t have these documents prepared, now is the time to make them. And if they are prepared, make sure they’re updated and know where they are located.

Hire in-home help: Depending on your mom’s needs, you may need to hire a part-time home-care aide that can help with things like preparing meals, housekeeping or personal care. Costs can run anywhere from $12 up to $25 per hour. To find someone, try websites like Care. com or CareLinx.com.

Utilize technology: To help you keep tabs on your mom from afar, there are various technologies that can help. For example, there are medical alert systems, video camera monitors, wearable activity trackers, and electronic pill boxes that can notify you if she has taken her medications. And to help you coordinate her care with members of her care team there are websites like LotsAHelpingHands.com.
