Preventative,

During a recent late winter afternoon, Linda Quinlan, the current North Carolina American Legion Auxiliary Historian, visited Elizabeth (“Lib”) Stewart, American Legion Auxiliary Past National President 1999-2000. Linda knew that Lib would soon commemorate the 25th anniversary of her August 1999 election as National President and thought it seemed like an opportune time for a visit since Linda lives in Shelby – just ten miles away from Lib’s hometown of Kings Mountain.

Upon arriving at Lib’s country home, Linda and her husband, Jim, were warmly welcomed. They enjoyed a long visit reminiscing about Lib's many warm memories from her year as President.

and complimentary runner forms to give to runners. Complimentary run shirts are given to the runners, and nice trophies are awarded to winners of all ages and run categories.

Run Shirts have the sponsor names on the back, and a large banner is placed with sponsor names on the front of the trail building.

They are listed on the trail website each year.

The trail opened in 2009 and began having annual 5K and l0-Mile runs for a fundraiser, exercise, and getting folks to Kings Mountain. Many local folks from a large area around Kings Mountain come to participate in a healthy event, giving runners something to look forward to and having lots of outdoor fun.

Curious about the happenings Lib experienced during her tenure and how things may have changed during the past 25 years, Linda peppered her with many questions. An energetic woman in her 60s when she was elected National President, Lib’s mind, is still sharp as a tack 25 years

later. She has attended every National Convention since 1975 but has missed the last four due to health issues.

First joining the American Legion Auxiliary in 1969 through the eligibility of two brothers in the Navy and USAF, she immediately See LIB, Page 5A

On Thursday, March 7, the Gaston County Police Department identified the suspect and the victim in Wednesday’s fatal shooting in a south Gastonia neighborhood.

David Pace, 51, of 111 Chrisco Lane in Gastonia, was charged with Murder, Kidnapping, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, and Assault by Pointing a Firearm. The deceased was identified as 33-year-old Erica Fay Welch of Gastonia.

On Wednesday, GCPD responded to a domestic incident that led to a standoff with police.

When officers approached the residence, an individual inside fired shots inside the

residence and at officers. Officers called for additional resources, including the Gaston County Police Emergency Response Team (ERT).

Officers rescued one person from the home, who told

them one person was being held hostage, as well as one person with a possible gunshot wound. ERT personnel immediately conducted an emergency rescue operation where they successfully rescued one other individual, discovered one person deceased, and arrested a suspect. In his first appearance in court on Friday, Pace was denied bond, and his court date was set for March 28.

Anyone with additional information on the incident is asked to call Det. T. Pilkington at 704-866-3320 or Crimestoppers at 704-8618000.

The Cleveland County Health Department is investigating a tuberculosis (TB) case involving an individual at Gardner-Webb University. The local health department was notified on March 4 of the TB case and is required by law to investigate. The department follows the North Carolina TB Control Program protocols in managing investigations. While it is important for our community to be aware of this situation, a relatively small number of individuals are likely to have been exposed, and no one is at immediate risk of any health problems. TB is a disease that generally develops over weeks to months, and it is completely curable with medications.

Local public health officials have worked with Gardner-Webb University faculty and staff to identify individuals who may have been exposed to the disease through close and

prolonged contact with the positive individual. Everyone identified as a contact will be notified directly by phone, text or e-mail explaining the need to be tested for TB. The vast majority of employees and students will not be contacted and do not need any testing or treatment for TB.

Only individuals who are contacted directly by university staff and identified as potential contacts will need to be tested. The university is working directly with the Cleveland County Health Department to arrange TB testing on campus for all individuals identified as contacts at no cost to the individual.

“After consultation with the health department and thorough contact investigations, we are confident we have a good list of possible contacts. There is no need to test the entire university population,” said Director of Environmental and Occupational Safety for Gardner-Webb

University, Barry Lane. TB is transmitted when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. The germs are expelled into the air, and if a nearby person breathes them in, that person can become infected with TB.

“TB generally develops over weeks to months and is completely curable if detected early and treated properly with medication,” said DeShay Oliver, Deputy Health Director, Cleveland County Health Department. Symptoms include a productive cough lasting longer than three weeks, unexplained fever, profuse sweating at night, appetite loss, unexplained weight loss, shortness of breath, chest pain, and excessive fatigue. However, all of these symptoms can be caused by many other diseases besides TB.”

A positive TB test result does not mean a person is sick with TB or will develop TB disease. If an individual has a positive TB

On Friday, March 1, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement received a call from the 100 block of Timber Ridge Road Belmont regarding a raccoon that was found deceased in the yard near a family cat. There was no human contact with the raccoon, and the animal owner did not witness the cat interact with the raccoon.

Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident and impounded the raccoon that day. The raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh.

Official laboratory results were received on Tuesday, March 5, at approximately 3:00 p.m., indicating that the raccoon tested positive for rabies. As a precaution, the family veterinarian gave the cat a rabies booster shot.

With millions of tax refunds going out each week, the Internal Revenue Service reminded taxpayers that recent improvements to Where's My Refund? on IRS.gov provides more information and remain the best way to check the status of a refund. The Where’s My Refund? tool provides taxpayers with three key pieces of information: IRS confirmation of receiving a federal tax return, approval of the tax refund, and issuing date of the approved tax refund. Information for returns from tax years 2023, 2022, and 2021 is available. During this busy filing season, millions of taxpayers anticipate refunds. The improvements to the heavily used tool follow Inflation Reduction Act funding, which provides for a variety of IRS technological advances and upgrades designed to help taxpayers and transform agency operations. To use Where’s My Refund?, taxpayers must enter their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification number, filing status, and the exact whole dollar amount of their expected refund from the original tax return for the year they're checking. Once the IRS acknowledges receipt of a return, refund status information is typically available within: • 24 hours after receipt of a taxpayer's e-filed tax year 2023 return. • Three to four days after receipt of an e-filed tax year 2022 or 2021 return. • Four weeks after mailing a paper return. Taxpayers should note that the IRS updates the tool once daily, usually overnight, so there's no need to check more often. The IRS reminds taxpayers that the fastest way to get a refund is by filing electronically and using direct deposit. Many different factors may affect the timing of refund delivery: • The tax return has errors, requires additional review, or is incomplete. • The return needs a correction to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit. • The time between the IRS issuing the refund and the bank posting it to an account may vary since processing times fluctuate. The IRS will contact taxpayers by mail if more information is needed to process a return. IRS phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of a refund if: • 21 days or more have passed since a return was filed electronically. • Six weeks or more have passed since a return was mailed. • Where’s My Refund? tells the taxpayer to contact the IRS. If a taxpayer refund isn't what is expected, it may be due to changes made by the IRS. These changes could include corrections to the Child Tax Credit or EITC amounts or an offset from all or part of the refund amount to pay past-due tax or debts. More information about reduced refunds is available on IRS.gov. The deadline for most taxpayers to file a tax return, pay any tax due or request an extension to file is Monday, April 15. The Foote Trail has reopened. This Gateway Trail announced that a portion of the bridge spanning I-85 has been cleared by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and a private engineer inspection. On February 20, a motor vehicle traveling on I-85 South struck the Gateway Trail bridge, causing visible damage to its underside. The NCDOT inspected the bridge and certified that traffic can safely pass under it. However, an engineer had to examine the bridge separately to ensure it was safe for foot traffic using the Foote Trail. Until that inspection was performed and the bridge’s safety verified, they closed the Foote Trail to all use. The Gateway Trail said, “Thank you for your patience and understanding. We realize this took longer than expected, but your safety is of the utmost importance to us!”

LIB

From Page 1A became involved and was elected North Carolina Department President in 1976. Lib recalled, “I attended my first Department Convention in 1969 and the first National Convention in 1975”. Mary Sue Jarrett, a good friend who lived a mere 13 miles away, was elected National President in 1974 and encouraged Lib to pursue a path toward the presidency herself. Lib enthusiastically continued her service to the organization and filled many roles in the National Auxiliary from 1980 onwards. She held National appointments in the Southern Division and later as chairperson of the National Community Service, Public Relations, Poppy, and VA&R committees, to name a few. She was elected National Historian in 1993 and National Vice President 1998-1999. National President Stewart said during her tenure that “… it was a time to celebrate America; to celebrate the new millennium.” After being elected, the National Auxiliary Headquarters provided her with a cell phone and a laptop, which she took with her everywhere. They also provided her with an apartment in Indianapolis to stay in while in town for meetings and in between trips. Back then, there was no such thing as virtual meetings and Zoom, so she was on the road or in the air quite a bit.

During her term as National American Legion Auxiliary President, Ms. Stewart stressed unit revitalization. Her membership theme was “TNT” – The New Threshold, and at the turn of the century, Lib recalled that the ALA had nearly 1,000,000 members. She also used her office to spread awareness of breast cancer. A 35-year survivor of the disease, she was passionate about informing audiences far and wide about the disease. She encouraged women and men to take advantage of early detection and screening procedures. Lib mentioned a humorous incident during the 19th Annual Awareness Assembly in March 2000.

“There were several American Legion Past National Commanders and NECmen at a large reception, and they provided a unique fashion show to raise money for breast cancer awareness,” Lib said. She was surprised and initially somewhat embarrassed but then continued her story. “…These normally reserved and distinguished Legionnaires pranced around the banquet room modeling their fashions and raised nearly $13,000 for breast

cancer research and the Susan G. Komen Foundation!”

An extensive traveler during her year in office, Lib visited nearly every state and several foreign countries, including France, Taiwan, the Philippines, Mexico, and Germany. She traveled to South Korea in June 2000, during the 50th anniversary observing the start of the Korean Conflict.

But it was while in France Lib experienced some of her most memorable events during her tenure. During a special ceremony at a French National Cemetery, where Lib placed flags and a wreath, she was asked by the French General in charge of the event to review the troops. This was a complete surprise – not on the itinerary – and fortunately, she quickly recalled some French from her high school days. She said, “… I passed the line of handsome young soldiers standing at attention, smiled, shook their hands, and thanked them (in French) for their service. It ended up going

very well, and I still have wonderful memories of that visit.” While in Paris, she had the unique opportunity to flip the switch to light up the Arc de Triomphe for an evening event. She then took a train trip to visit Flanders Field in Belgium. She paid her respects to the many service members buried there and marveled at the fields of red poppies.

At Hickam AFB, Hawaii, she participated in a solemn December 1999 repatriation ceremony, the remains believed to be those of US Marines killed in action on Butaritari Island during World War II. It represented the largest and most significant recovery of remains of that time. National Commander Al Lance and National President Stewart went on this trip and were very impressed with the ceremony and Operation Homecoming.

Working with the National American Legion Commander and National Sons of the Legion Commander, Lib raised money to help fund the planned

World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. A photo in the ALA National News May-June 2000 magazine shows Lib presenting a large replica check to Senator Bob Dole for $2,750,000 on behalf of the Legion Family. So many programs were near and dear to her heart. Among them were Veterans Rehabilitation & Affairs, and Children and Youth Programs. She also led the Auxiliary fundraising efforts for the Children’s Miracle Network. A unique item gifted to her during her presidency was a small “button chair” made in her home state. Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of North Carolina created the original Button Chair in 1998 as a tribute to all women—as well as their families, friends, and support networks—who have battled breast cancer in North Carolina. Every button represented a unique story of courage and strength, each belonging to a breast cancer survivor or someone who had lost their battle with the disease.

Many times, during Lib’s speeches, she spoke of breast cancer awareness. She was gifted with a small, hand-crafted wooden replica chair made in North Carolina. The symbolic button idea quickly caught on, and the chair traveled throughout the state during conferences and appearances at various functions. Auxiliary members and the general public soon adorned the little chair with hundreds of brightly colored buttons representing themselves or loved ones diagnosed with breast cancer. Lib still has and cherishes the little chair today as one of her favorite memories. She has enjoyed a long career as a journalist and received many writing awards throughout her life. While she received a year off during her presidency, the fall of 2000 saw her return to 50-hour work weeks at the newspaper office. And still today, she spends several hours each week on her home computer writing for the Kings Mountain Herald.

Now nearing 90 years of age, Past National President Stewart reflected that “… I enjoyed excellent health throughout my year as National President and never once called in sick.” She is very grateful for the support of the North Carolina American Legion Auxiliary and will forever cherish the memories, friendships made, unforgettable opportunities, and world travel experiences. She is a smalltown girl treated like royalty whose American Legion Auxiliary dreams came true. She is blessed, indeed!

The Purpose of Jesus’ Sacrifice on the Cross

Lent starts its inspiration from the Gospel accounts of Jesus’

40 days of fasting and prayer in the wilderness. Luke 4:1-

2). Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit [a]into the wilderness, 2 being [b] tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days, He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

This period of intense spiritual testing serves as a template for believers to examine their own lives, embrace self-discipline, and seek a deeper connection with God. The season of Lent serves as a poignant

reminder of the profound sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, inviting believers to reflect on the significance of His redemptive act. The journey through Lent is intrinsically tied to the enduring symbol of the cross, representing love, sacrifice, and ultimate victory over sin. His journey to the cross holds profound significance for Christians worldwide. Why did Jesus willingly endure such suffering and death?

Understanding the purpose behind His sacrifice illuminates the core of the Christian faith. At the heart of Jesus’ mission was His deep love for humanity. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus went to the cross out of love, offering Himself as a perfect sacrifice to redeem us from sin and

reconcile us to God. The Bible teaches that all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God and merits punishment. but, God’s love provided a solution. Romans 5:8 declares, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross atoned for our sins, offering forgiveness and salvation to all who believe in Him.

Jesus’ journey to the cross fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. Isaiah 53:5 saying, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punish-ment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds, we are healed.” His crucifixion was not a random event but part of God’s divine plan to bring redemption to humanity.

Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross also demonstrated His victory over sin and death. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death, offering eternal life to all who believe in Him. 1 Corinthians 15:55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” Jesus’ victory over death ensures that believers have hope beyond the grave. He went to the cross out of His profound love for us, to atone for our sins, fulfill prophecy, and secure victory over death. This sacrifice on the cross is the foundation of the Christian faith, offering forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life to all who believe in Him. As we reflect on Jesus’ journey to the cross, may we be filled with gratitude for His incomparable love and sacrifice on our behalf. God bless you.

A record-breaking crowd of more than 250 fans saw the Kings Mountain Middle School’s women’s soccer team defeat Crest 3-2 in their home opener last week.

“We couldn’t be prouder of these girls,” said Coach Tyler Deaton. “It’s their game, not ours. We are here to help, support and create a positive environment for them. The girls did the work and they earned every bit of this win.”

The Lady Patriots started strong with a 1-0 lead in the first four minutes on a goal

by eighth grade midfielder Elyn Phongsa.

Crest quickly capitalized with back-to-back goals in the span of four minutes for a 2-1 lead just six minutes into the game.

The Lady Patriots made some quick adjustments and began to gain control of the game. A foul on Crest led to a goal by sixth grader Addison Deaton as she found the open part of the net.

The score remained 2-2 at the half.

Kings Mountain came out strong in the second half and created many chances

around the goal. Harper Hollifield capitalized off a missed clearance by a Crest defender and found the back of the net for a 3-2 lead.

KM goalkeeper Charlie Burgess along with defenders Avery Cruise, Macey McDaniel, Jovie Laughter, Alana McDaniel and Kayla Abrams held a strong defensive line and finished the game without allowing any more goals.
