Albemarle begins dewatering the mine pit in April

Last week, Albemarle met with local media to share information about dewatering the mine pit, which begins in April and is anticipated to continue for 18 to 24 months.

The Kings Mountain mine is an open pit site. When mining stopped nearly 40 years ago, the mine pit began

from the pit to a temporary water treatment plant constructed on the Kings Mountain site.

The water will be cleaned, and sediment filtered out at the water treatment plant. Once treated, the water will travel to the South Creek Reservoir for gradual release into Kings Creek at a rate compliant with the DEQ permit to ensure the integrity of the creek and river basin.

Water will be pumped from the water treatment plant at a rate of 2,500 gallons per minute into the South Creek Reservoir, which empties into Kings Creek. According to Albemarle, water traveling through Kings Creek during heavy rains can far exceed this amount on average. The plant will monitor the water See ALBEMARLE, Page 5A

Gaston County Police Department Seeks Assistance in Breaking and Entering of Motor Vehicles and Home Invasion/Robbery Cases

On March 3, between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:42 a.m., a suspect broke into multiple vehicles off Brindle Street and York Highway in Gastonia, N.C. The suspect also broke into an outbuilding and entered a home off Brindle Street and held a family at gunpoint.

The suspect was wearing a black mask, black

hoodie, and jeans. He was also armed with a black handgun. Items stolen include two yellow Dewalt drills, two yellow Dewalt Sawzall, a red Craftsman generator, another Dewalt drill of unknown color, a blue Bosch jackhammer, an iPhone 7 Plus, and an iPhone 6SE.

The suspect also cut a radio out of one of the vehicles. The suspect may live nearby, possibly in the area of Billings Street. These videos and the screenshot were taken from the victims’ video

Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office released its February statistics. During the month, there were 9,706 calls for service, 229 arrests, and 1,285 papers served, including 431

criminal, 601 civil, and 253 subpoenas.

One hundred sixty-six incident reports were handled: 146 were criminal, and 20 were non-criminal. One hundred eighty-eight concealed carry gun permits were issued.

Narcotics seized were 43,843.0 DU pills, Cocaine 8.2 g, Marijuana 2,955.57 g, Meth 864.10 g, and Fentanyl/Heroin 86.20g. The monthly average of inmates handled by the sheriff’s office was 237 males and 50 females.

Family Dollar announces closure of 1000 stores

Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR), the parent company of Family Dollar, has revealed plans to shut down nearly 1,000 stores within the discount retail chain.

According to a recent report, Dollar Tree Inc. has thoroughly reviewed its store portfolio, aiming to optimize operations by assessing market conditions and individual store performance. As a result of this evaluation, approximately 600 Family Dollar stores will be closed in the first half of fiscal 2024. Additionally, about 370 Family Dollar stores and 30

Dollar Tree outlets will cease operations over the next few years as their lease terms expire.

The company has not yet disclosed the specific locations of the affected Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores.

Dollar Tree, headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia, acquired Family Dollar in July 2015 in a deal valued at around $10 billion after a heated bidding war

with its rival Dollar General Corp. The acquisition involved closing or divesting over 1,800 stores to comply with federal antitrust regulations. This move marked the departure of a Fortune 500 company from North Carolina. Initially, Dollar Tree had pledged to maintain Family Dollar’s Matthews, NC headquarters. However, by the end of 2019, it had shuttered the headquarters completely, losing an additional 900 jobs.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

Last Saturday, I was honored to share the story of Ida Pauline Mauney Neisler during a gathering to celebrate Kings Mountain’s 150th anniversary during a Col. Frederick Hambright DAR Chapter Tea recognizing Women’s History Month, which included a genealogy workshop at Central Methodist Church, held on Saturday, March 16, at 2 pm.

first wife, Mary Susan Ramseur. Mary died in 1886 when Ida was just 15. In 1892, Ida Pauline married Charles Eugene Neisler, who eventually became the superintendent of Kings Mountain Manufacturing. Together, they had eight children.

Dignitaries from the North Carolina Society Daughters of the American Revolution included State Regent Anna Choi, other state officers, and the District II Director.

I was asked to share the story of Ida Pauline Mauney Neisler, the Col. Frederick Hambright Chapter’s Founding Regent, who was the chapter’s first Regent in 1916.

I take the liberty of calling Mrs. Neisler by her first two names, Ida Pauline. I mean no disrespect; after all my research, I feel as if I know her.

Ida Pauline was born on October 29, 1870, and her family moved to the community in 1874. She was the daughter of W. A. Mauney and his

In May 1929, just five years after the town celebrated its 50th anniversary, Ida’s father, W.A. Mauney, died of cancer. Two years later, her husband died of a heart attack while driving home one evening from Gastonia. She was just 60 years old. Ida lived to be 93 and was very active in the community until declining health prevented her participation.

In her lifetime, she and her husband opened their mills and quickly became Kings Mountain’s largest employer. Charles Eugene and Ida Pauline worked together to grow a thriving community and raise their family.

She donated land for the Woman’s Club, First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a founding member, and First Wesleyan Church. She chartered women’s groups and organized the formation of the American Legion Aux-

iliary, GFWC NC Kings Mountain Woman’s Club, and the Colonel Frederick Hambright DAR Chapter. She was more than a mother, wife, daughter, sister, club organizer, and Founding DAR Chapter Regent. She was a leader and a visionary and saw the opportunity before her. I can’t say if Charles considered her his partner, but folks in the community sure did. She was the force behind keeping the mills open during the Great Depression so workers could provide for their families. Employees never went without pay during that terrible time in our nation’s history. She was also the mediator for workers when disagreements occurred between them and management. She made a place in this community that far exceeded her lifetime. And because of her vision, many of us continue to enjoy the fruits of her labor today.

Ida Pauline was not alone in any of these endeavors, but she contributed to their success. Indeed, other women must have performed vital roles toward the success of these projects. Let us not forget them. Just as they planned for future generations

without ever knowing us, I urge you to remind your friends and family of the critical work done by these women. It is our responsibility to acknowledge and perpetuate their memory.

I remember my mother’s work, fixing the hair of the older women in our neighborhood who could not venture out so they would be ready for family during holidays. She made them feel beautiful and gave them peace of mind. What a gift she gave. She was kindhearted and did

what she could to help others in need. I also remember the kindness of my guidance counselor and lifelong friend, Carolyn McWhirter, who guided me toward higher education. While these women’s work was done on a smaller scale, it was vitally important to me. Following what God led their hearts to do, they made my world better.

So, during Women’s History Month, please take a moment to remember the women in your life who impacted you, your

family, and our community. Celebrate them and the work they did to make Kings Mountain a better place. Share their stories with your family and friends.

Because we love Kings Mountain and its people, we want the best for them. By sharing these important stories, we keep the memory alive of the work of women who made our city a better place. By keeping in mind where we came from, we have a guide to chart a course for the future.

Congress must demonstrate what it takes to succeed

Life is fragile and doesn’t last very long, so we should try to enjoy every day. Be good to yourself and be good to other people. Treat people the way you would like to be treated. Speak to people in a manner that you would like for them to speak to you. Treat motorists on the highway the way you want others to treat you.

Looking Back

If you can help someone in some way, then don’t miss the opportunity of being blessed by doing an act of kindness.

Forgive yourself and forgive others. Extend grace and move forward with life. Some things are hard to overcome but carefully consider what you want to carry around the rest of your life. If someone broke in front of you at the cafeteria line then don’t hold that against them the rest of your life. It harms you more than it harms them. Some much of the baggage that we carry all our lives is not worth the burden and unrest that it causes. Let it go and move forward.

Try to do what you enjoy every day or at least some of the time. There are always dishes to wash, grass to mow and bills to pay. Life is filled with the daily chores and tasks of life. Try to fit into your schedule what brings you some pleasure. It may be the simplest of activities but that’s okay. A car drive, a walk around the block, fishing or sitting in church, whatever it is then find time for the simple pleasures of life.

Life is fragile. We are all one heartbeat away from death. We never know what’s lurking inside these bodies that could disable or kill us at any moment. Routine physical exams are vital to try to maintain our health but even then, they are not the silver bullet. Anything can happen at any time. Take value in this day that you have and soak in the sunshine or the rain, whatever is going on, find joy in another day of life.

Do not fall out with people over politics and issues. It’s important to be able to express our

points of view and work to accomplish change. However, the only way we are going to bring about change and progress is by working together. A divided house cannot stand, nor can a divided nation The planet needs for America to be “United.” United doesn’t necessarily mean in harmony. I heard a story about a little boy who tied the tails of two tomcats together and hung them on a clothesline. They were very united but they had no harmony. Obviously, this would be a bad thing to do but it’s sort of like our United States Congress. They are all united by political positions and have to show up in the same room but they argue, fight and scratch every day without bring about solutions. Each of us must demand from our local Congressional representation that they go to D.C. to work beyond party lines, embrace each other, and get things accomplished.

Those who serve us in D.C. must demonstrate to the American people what it takes to get things done instead ow what it takes to fail.

The recommendation acknowledges the increased risk of severe disease from COVID-19 in older adults, along with the currently available data on vaccine effectiveness.

show the importance of vaccination to protect those most at risk for severe out-comes of COVID-19. An additional dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine may restore protection that has waned since a fall vaccine dose, providing increased protection to adults ages 65 years and older.

Adults 65 years and older are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, with more than half of COVID-19 hospitalizations during October 2023 to December 2023 occurring in this age group.

CDC and ACIP will continue to monitor COVID-19 vaccine safety and effectiveness. CDC contin-ues to recommend

that everyone stay up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines, especially people with weakened immune systems.

“This recommendation allows older adults to receive an additional dose of this season’s COVID19 vaccine to provide added protection,” said Mandy Cohen, M.D., M.P.H. “Most COVID19 deaths and hospitalizations last year were among people 65 years and older. An additional vaccine dose can provide added protection that may have decreased over time for those at highest risk.”

Kings Mountain National Military Park will conduct a series of prescribed burns within the park boundaries through April 15. Locations to be burned are as follows:

• Battlefield burn unit—a 175-acre area located primarily behind the visitor center.

The northern boundary of this unit is Colonial Road, which branches south onto Yorkville/Shelbyville Road. The battlefield trail system is north of the visitor center and serves as part of the Eastern Boundary. Highway 216, Main Park Drive, com-prises the remainder of the eastern, southern, and western boundaries.

• Water Treatment Plant burn unit, a 111-acre area located north of the main park drive and adjacent to the Battlefield area. The unit is bound by the headwaters of Long Branch to the north and a portion of Clarks Creek Trail to the south.

• Long Branch burn unit, an 82-acre area located north of the main park drive, adjoins the Water Treatment Plant unit. The unit is bound by the headwaters of Long

Branch to the north and adjoins a portion of Clarks Creek Trail.

• The Swale burn unit is a 186–acre area bordered to the west by Yorkville/Shelbyville Road, to the east by the Midway burn unit, and to the south by Clarks Creek, the Clarks Creek Trail, and the Battlefield burn unit.

• The Midway burn unit covers a 196-acre area near the park’s northeast boundary. It is bound to the south by Clarks Creek and the Clarks Creek Trail and to the west by the Swale burn unit. Wildland fire crews are working to prepare these units for safe and effective prescribed burns, which are conducted in accordance with the approved fire management plan and as weather condi-tions allow throughout the spring season. Surrounding communities may expect minimal smoke and visibility impacts during the burns. Some access to trails and grounds within the burn areas may be temporarily restricted during burn activities for visitor and wildland fire crew safety.

The timing of the pre-

scribed burn implementation depends upon various conditions. Burns are conducted within specific parameters considering temperature, relative humidity, fuel moisture, wind speed, and wind direction. The safety of firefighters and the public is the number one priority of all NPS wildland fire management activities. Informational updates and alerts regarding pre-scribed burn activities in the park will be posted on the park’s website and social media.

Fire is an essential and natural process that has shaped the landscape of Kings Mountain National Military Park for thousands of years. Prescribed burns are conducted at the park to reduce wildland fire risk and restore native vegetation and historic landscapes. All areas of historic, cultural, and ecological importance are identified and protected throughout the planning and implementation of prescribed burns.

With concern for the pit lake inhabitants, wildlife biologists have completed studies of the aquatic species to ensure that no threatened or endangered species live in or around the pit. The only aquatic species in

the pit is the common bluegill, which is not threatened or endangered. Biologists anticipate that birds and mammals will adjust and access other water bodies on and off-site.

To dewater the pit safely and sustainably they expect the process to take up to 18 to 24 months to complete. The treated water will be discharged at a higher quality than the North Carolina DEQ Class C water body standard.

Water quality will be continuously monitored with in-process sensors for pH, clarity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. Regular water quality sampling for analysis will be done from its groundwater and surface water monitoring network.

The water treatment process was specifically designed for pit dewatering to mitigate odor during the process due to low dissolved oxygen at the depth in the pit lake. Proj-

ect scientists are studying the interaction between the lowering water levels of the pit and how the pit water will mix with rainwater and the atmosphere. As the mixing of the new water dilutes the existing water, the new mixture serves to lessen the off-gas potential of the sulfur as the water level goes down. Albemarle anticipates there will be little to no discernible smell beyond the pit during the process.

The last words spoken by Jesus as He hung on the cross hold deep significance, encapsulating the essence of His mission and the depth of His love for us. Each statement uttered in His final moments reveals profound truths about His purpose, His compassion, and His victory over sin and death.

• Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

(Luke 23:34) In the midst of excruciating pain and suffering, Jesus demonstrates unparalleled compassion by interceding for His executioners. This plea for forgiveness embodies His mes-

sage of love and reconciliation, extending grace to all, regardless of our sins. It serves as a powerful reminder of God’s boundless mercy and His desire for humanity’s redemption.

• “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43) Addressed to the repentant thief crucified alongside Him, this statement illustrates Jesus’ willingness to offer salvation to the most undeserving. Butterflies, Bears, and rare Birds, Oh My!

The name “snake bird” comes from its long neck and slender beak. As it swims in the water, this is mostly all you see, resembling a snake. The Anhinga is more familiar in Florida and coastal sections of Georgia and South Carolina. This is the first sighting of this bird in Cleveland County, and it is considered rare for how far inland it was spotted.

On February 2, 2024, Kevin Clary, the Kings Mountain Middle School band director, spotted the Anhinga along the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail. Realizing this was a rare sighting, he quickly documented the find on the website eBird.org. eBird is a site that boasts the world’s largest birding community, which Cornell University created. It is an online database of bird observations across the globe. More than 100 million bird sightings are contributed each year by eBirders.

When Mr. Clary reported his finding, eBird flagged it as a rare sighting. Members of this birding community were then notified about his documentation. Excited to see this bird for themselves, on February 4, 2024, a group of nine birders traveled to the Gateway Trail in hopes of viewing the bird for themselves. Within this group,

Vicky Burke, from Grover, North Carolina, and a guide for Venture’s Birding Tours out of Asheville, North Carolina, not being familiar with the Gateway Trail, decided to join the group of 9 people to look for the bird. The group, thinking the bird would no longer be in the area due to it being out of place, were pleasantly surprised to see it still there. They found the Anhinga perched in a tree in the small lake of the Gateway Trail, along with a nesting Great Blue Heron and a Double-Crested Cormorant.

KM Gateway Trail 5K and 10-mile runs to be held March 23

Kings Mountain Gateway Trail will hold their 5K and 10-mile runs for March 23 this year at 807 S. Battleground Ave. in Kings Mountain. The runs are professionally managed on the day of the run, on Facebook, and at the website www.runsignup. com. Sponsors for the run receive a thank you letter and complimentary runner forms to give to runners. Complimentary run shirts are given to the runners, and nice trophies are awarded to winners of all ages and run categories. Run Shirts have the sponsor names on the back, and a large banner is placed with sponsor names on the front of the trail building. They are listed on the trail website each

corded in just the last two years. Ms. Burke stated that the conditions at the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail are conducive for other species of birds. Because of this, Ms. Burke is already planning a return trip in hopes of spotting additional birds. “This is wonderful and exciting news to host such a rare find,” said Shirley Brutko, Director of the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail.

Many local folks from a large area around Kings Mountain come to participate in a healthy event, giving runners something to look forward to and having lots of outdoor fun.

Kings Mountain Gateway Trail Director Shirley Brutkwo said, “2024 marks the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail’s 15th year, and all the runs have been a big success. We usually have anywhere between 180 to 230 runners participating and approximately 150 attending and watching the event.”

“It supports tourism and economic development for Kings Mountain, the county, and the region. Sometimes we have out-of-town runners who stay at our local hotels,” she continued. “We have been able to give pottery leaves and beautiful pottery disks for trophies, which are very popular with our runners. We run in all weather and have sometimes had rain, snow, ice, and sunshine. We serve refreshments at the event and have a large tent to shelter runners if needed. All sponsor dollars are used to pay for the run expenses and to help with trail needs such as upkeep, etc.”

Kings Mountain Middle School’s baseball team turned in some big victories over county rivals Crest 4-1 and Shelby 19-0 last week.

The Patriots got on the board in the bottom of the first inning against Crest. K.J. Bell singled and later scored, and Brock Phillips slammed a two-run home run to left field.

Bell led the hitting with 2-for-3. Phillips provided a pop in the middle of the lineup. He went 3-for-3.

Bell earned the win. He allowed just one hit and no runs in five innings. He struck out seven and walked four. K.B Richards pitched in relief.

Luke Rayfield was the losing pitcher. He went six innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out 14.

Kings Mountain jumped on Shelby with two runs in the top of the third on infield ground outs by Benfield and

Hudson Rhodes.

The Patriots added seven runs on five hits in the top of the fifth. Anderson Terry drew a walk, scoring one run. Benfield had an RBI single and another run scored when Braeden Morrissette was hit by a pitch. Rhodes singled to score another, Daniel Bullock drew a bases-loaded walk for another, and Eli Caldwell singled in another.

Phillips earned the win. The southpaw allowed just one hit and no runs while striking out five in two innings of work. Rhodes and Morrissette relieved for the Patriots.

Shelby’s pitcher surrendered 15 hits and 19 runs over five innings.

The Patriots finished with 15 hits. Rhodes, Terry, Acuff and Bell had multiple hits.

Kings Mountain High’s baseball team got off to a good start in Big South 3A Conference play last week with 6-2 and 7-0 victories over Stuart Cramer.

The Mountaineers were scheduled to go to Gastonia Ashbrook last night and will host the Green Wave Friday at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Field. They will hit the road again Friday to

face Hunter Huss and will host the Huskies on Tues., March 26.

Luke Heavner went 2-for-3 and scored two runs in the Tuesday win over the Storm.

Colton Mayes also went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored.

Brayden Patrick hurled the first six innings to get

the win. He allowed just five hits and struck out 11. He also had a hit, one RBI and scored a run. Mayes pitched the seventh inning.

In Thursday’s shutout in Cramerton, the Mountaineers got a good pitching performance from Aidan Taylor who went six innings, holding the Storm to three hits and fanning

eight. Mayes again came in as the closer, allowing no hits in the seventh. Taylor led the hitting with 3-for-3 and also scored two runs. Mayes went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in and Kandan Zollo went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Luke Heavner was 1-for-3.

Field and Alanna Snelson set school records

Kings Mountain High’s track and field teams showcased their talent and determination at the 10th annual Mountaineer relays last week at John Gamble Stadium. Both the men’s and women’s teams delivered impressive performances.

In the men’s event, the Mountaineers had individual first place finishes from Max Thompson in the Chad Pearson 3200 meter run; Tyler McIntyre in the 100 meter high hurdles, Hunter

Cruise in the pole vault and Kamari McIntyre in the hurdles with a finish of 37 feet, eight inches. The men also had a second place finish. The Mountaineer relay teams posted victories in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

On the women’s side, Sarah Eagle and Zaniah Field led the charge with multiple first place finishes. Field claimed a school record with her long jump mark of 16 feet, four inches. The relay teams also

performed well with the distance medley relay and sprint medley relay teams earning top finishes. Individual achievements were also notable with Alanna Snelson setting a new KMHS record in the pole vault and Kinley Putnam securing second place in the same event.

Overall, the KM track and field teams demonstrated their skill and teamwork, resulting in a successful showing by both teams.

The women finished with a team total of 149 points, followed by Shelby 97, Ashbrook 62, Highland Tech 61, North Gaston 52, Bessemer City 38, Cherryville 35 and Stuart Cramer 12.

The Kings Mountain men racked up 183 points. Shelby ran second at 117 followed by Ashbrook 86, North Gaston 55, Highland Tech 36, Cherryville 27, Stuart Cramer 21 and Bessemer City 20.

Kings Mountain High’s golfers finished third in the Big South 3A Conference golf match Monday at Kings Mountain Country Club.

Stuart Cramer won with a 288 total followed by Crest 305, KM 308, South Point 323, Forestview 365, North Gaston 436, Ashbrook 446 and Hunter Huss 470.

The 4x4 team (Zykeen Hamrick, Nemo Hogue, AJ Parker and Elijah Long) won in 4:16. KM won 11 of the 12 events and swept four of them.

The Patriots go after their sixth straight win today at Chase.

THE 29TH ANNUAL PLAYING OF THE CLEVELAND COUNTY INTERCLUB CHAMPIONSHIP was contested at Kings Mountain Country Club March 16-17. Additional mental health support for veterans and first responders

HopeWay, an accredited, nonprofit mental health center in the area, introduced a new Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) specifically for veterans and first responders. This program includes group therapy focused on trauma recovery, utilizing various therapeutic approaches.

The HopeWay Foundation staff specializes in treating PTSD and related conditions, offering evidence-based treatments such as individual therapy and group sessions. Tailored Residential, Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programs

provide personalized care to meet individual needs. The aim is to help veterans and first responders achieve mental wellness and fulfillment through specialized programs and therapies.

Like many others, Founders Betsy and Bill Blue faced significant challenges navigating the local mental health care system. Disappointed by the region’s lack of available services, they took action. Dear Savvy Senior, What are the IRS income tax filing requirements for retirees this tax season? I didn’t file a tax return the past two years because my income was below the filing threshold, but I got a part-time job late last year, so I’m wondering if I’m required to file this year.

Dear Retired, Whether or not you are required to file a federal income tax return this year will depend on how much you earned last year (in 2023), as well as the source of the income, your age and filing status. Here’s a rundown of this tax season’s IRS tax filing requirement thresholds.

For most people, this is pretty straightforward. If your 2023 gross income –which includes all taxable income, not counting your Social Security benefits, unless you are married and filing separately – was below the threshold for your filing status and age, you probably won’t have to file. But if it’s over, you will.

• Single: $13,850 ($15,700 if you’re 65 or older by Jan. 1, 2023).

• Married filing jointly: $27,700 ($29,200 if you or your spouse is 65 or older; or $30,700 if you’re both over 65).

• Married filing separately: $5 at any age.

• Head of household: $20,800 ($22,650 if 65 or older).

• Qualifying surviving spouse: $27,700 ($29,200 if 65 or older).

Be aware that there are other financial situations that can require you to file a tax return, even if your gross income falls below the IRS filing requirements.

For example, if you earned more than $400 from self-employment in 2023, owe any taxes on an IRA, Health Savings Account or an alternative minimum tax, or get premium tax credits because you, your spouse or a dependent is enrolled in a Health Insurance
