The fire engulfed a tractor-trailer involved in the crash, and the blaze emitted thick, black smoke. According to troopers, the truckdriver traveling at full speed died. The other driver also sustained injuries. Pieces of Kings Mountain History

As you drive along Gaston Street in Kings Mountain, you can’t help but notice the football field to the East. The sign, a beacon of our community’s pride, proudly proclaims it “Shu Carlton Stadium.”

In our busy 21st-century world, many do not know the stadium’s history or the man for whom it is named. Shu Carlton, a figure of immense significance in our town’s football legacy, is remembered with fondness and respect by his former players. He set the stage for Kings Mountain High School as a strong club, and his name rightly graces the stadium in which he coached.

Here is a brief history of Coach Shu Carlton, who was also a WWII and Korean War veteran, and the history behind Kings Mountain’s City Stadium. Portions of the information below are reprinted from the Kings Mountain Herald’s March 13, 1952, edition: Marine First Lieutenant Everette L. (Shu) Carlton, a former teacher and football coach from Kings Mountain, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his extraordinary and selfless actions in Korea. As the Commander of a platoon of the 1st Marine Division Tank Battalion, Lt. Carlton, in a display of unparalleled bravery, left the safety of his tank to successfully evacuate a wounded Marine infantryman from a

minefield under intense enemy rifle, machine gun, and mortar fire.

“Lt. Carlton, who was called from his duties as a teacher and football coach at Kings Mountain High School last March, has been in Korea since August 1951. He is also a veteran of combat action in World War II. “His wife, Louise, and daughter, Deborah, now live at 211 North Grove Street, Lincolnton. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Carlton of Winston-Salem.

“The citation reads: For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy while serving with a Marine tank company in Korea on 11 Sept. 51. A tank platoon commander, Lt. Carlton, was occupying firing positions in support of an attacking infantry regiment when the area was subjected to intense enemy small arms and mortar fire. Looking through his vision block, he observed a Marine infantryman fall wounded about one hundred yards distant in terrain that denied the ma-

neuver of tanks. Without hesitating, he fearlessly dismounted from his tank and dashed through the heavy enemy fire to reach the fallen Marine, passing through an enemy minefield to do so. He then carried the wounded man to another tank, which was moving to the rear for a supply of ammunition, and successfully completed his evacuation, “1st Lt, Carlton’s courageous actions undoubtedly saved the life of his wounded comrade and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”

Carlton returned to Kings Mountain, continuing his career as a teacher and football coach. According to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, “Shu Carlton was a highly successful football coach, athletic director, and principal during a career that covered five decades in education. He was later named to the NCHSSA Athletic Directors Association as the third class for induction into its See PIECES, Page 5A

Looking Back

Will Catlin Clark do okay in the WNBA?

Caitlin Clark will do great in the WNBA. She can shoot, she can pass and she’s a savvy player.

Clark did what no one ever dreamed anyone would do and that was to score more points than Pistol Pete Maravich who played for LSU from 1967 – 1970. Maravich scored 3667 total points at LSU and averaged 42.2 points per game for the tigers.

Clark totaled 3951 points .and averaged 30 points per game. Old timers are quick to recall that Maravich did it before the day of the shot clock and the three-point line. Also, it was in a day when freshmen weren’t allowed to play on the varsity. Still, this does not take away from the incredible feat accomplished by Clark playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes. When Maravich signed with the Atlanta Hawks in 1970. He signed for 1.9 million dollars which was the largest amount to be signed for by a college player at that time.

Clark with sign for $75,000 for her rookie season if she is picked

number 1 according to WNBA pay cap structures. It doesn’t sound like much for the greatest women’s college basketball player of all time but she will make it up in endorsements.

According to the NIL database, (name, image, likeness), Clark has already made 3.1 million during her college play. There will be more to come during her WNBA days.

The WENBA is growing. ESPN recorded viewership of the women’s final four games of over 14 million for the semi-finals and over 18 million for the final game. Such interest will bring bigger dollars to the league in time.

Clark may become the richest of the WNBA players. However, she may not catch up with Seth Curry of the Golden State Warriors whose team pay alone is 51.9 million a year. Or, Labron James who earns just over 47 million a year. Actually, the lowest paid players in the NBA are still making just a little over $1.6 million a year. Wait, whoever thought she would score such a massive number of ponts? Don’t rule her out on anything. Most of the WNBA players are making under $200, 000 a year from their team pay.

Some pick up extra money from playing in other countries in the off season and from endorsements.

Diana Taurasi has an estimated net worth is $3.5 million. Most of Diana’s earnings come from her endorsements with Body Armour and her deal with Nike to wear LeBron’s signature shoes. With an average salary of $234,936 and a contract until 2025, the number might just grow further.

Britney Griner is Infamous for her prison sentence in Russia, Griner is one of the most recognizable WNBA athletes in the world. Despite her imprisonment Griner still makes the list as one of the richest players in the WNBA. One of the tallest-ever players Brittney has made most of her fortunes playing abroad. A common feature in the WNBA Griner was once paid $600,000 to play for a Chinese based team for three months. Add to that her endorsements with Nike and you have an estimated net

Neisler shared an amazing story with the Herald regarding Gutzon Borglum, the famous sculptor of the four United States Presidents on Mount Rushmore, South Dakota. He was involved in a strange, nearly fatal incident near the present-day Patrick Senior Center in Kings Mountain
County. “The bullet was not discovered until yesterday when the auto was washed at the Motor Service Co. in Raleigh. The bullet penetrated the walls of the trunk and was stopped by tools. It appeared to have been fired at a slight angle from the right side of the car and fairly close range. The bullet lodged in the trunk. “Mr. Borglum, with a party of friends, was returning from a brief vacation to Chimney Rock. The trip was made in a high-powered Duesenberg automobile. Kings Mountain Forward, Inc., is sprucing up the planter boxes at the Kings Mountain Post Office at 115 E. Gold Street this Saturday, April 20, at 9 a.m., thanks to a donation by Neisler Brothers. “Mary Neisler loved making the town beautiful!!! As did Marilyn,” shared Stella Putnam.

“Sandie Dee, the owner of Big Sky Flowers in Kings Mountain, suggested the project,” shared KM Forward’s Director, Loretta Cozart. “After brainstorming, we introduced the idea to our board, and it unanimously approved it.”

Everyone in the community uses the post office at some point, so this beautification project brightening this spot in Kings Mountain was an easy decision. The concept was to include as many community partners as possible to lighten the load and encourage community engagement. The project also coincides with Earth Day and the City

After the 1956 season, Carlton resigned, taking a job in Gastonia, where he served as head football coach and athletic director at Ashley and then Gastonia Ashbrook High Schools, guiding his clubs to an outstanding 115-47-9 mark and eight berths in state playoffs. He was selected to coach in both the Shrine Bowl and East-West games. Carlton also served as principal of Ashbrook from 1973-77 before finishing his career as director of athletics for the Gaston County Schools but also found time to be active in civic and church affairs. He was selected as the North Carolina High School Athletic Directors’ Association AD of the Year in 1983 and is a member of the Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame. He was also honored by the Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame for his leadership as a coach at Kings Mountain High School, for elevating Kings Mountain’s team and garnering their place in NCHSAA history. In April 2014, Kings Mountain’s City Stadium was renamed Shu Carlton Stadium. Shu Carlton died of prostate cancer at the age of 82 in Dec. 2002.

City Stadium, as it was originally known, was funded through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers to carry out public works

projects, including constructing public buildings and roads. City Manager H.L. Burdette announced in the Herald that the application was filed in January 1941.

In February of 1941, the Herald shared that the WPA Stadium had been approved. The stadium’s total budget was $61,326, with the WPA providing $36,036 and the Town of Kings Mountain providing $26,293.

The town was given credit for supplying materials and equipment, which left a debt of $10,000.

However, the school had sold property it owned at Cleveland Avenue and King Street, and applied the proceeds to the project, leaving only $5,000 to be raised.

The stadium’s plans included a football field and stand, a baseball diamond and grandstand, a field house with lockers, showers, hot and cold water, and an estimated seating capacity of 3,000.

Construction was slated to begin on March 10, 1941, according to the Kings Mountain Herald’s Feb. 20, 1941, edition.

Members of the committee included H.L. Burdette, P. M. Neisler, W. K. Mauney, and C.F. Thomasson. The Herald did not mention City Stadium again in articles until 1946, when games were held there by Kings Mountain High School, the American Legion, and league teams. During that time, many of the town’s young men went to serve in WWII, and that may account for the lack of coverage

Under one of the largest rule changes in a decade to WIC, low-income families will have more money for fruits and vegetables. The announcement introduced updates that will increase the cash allowance for fruits and vegetables and broaden the range of produce available for purchase. Families can now access fresh and nutritious foods, including plant-based yogurts and cheeses.

As part of the revisions, the monthly allowances for milk and juice have been reduced. This decision aligns with dietary recommendations from esteemed groups such as the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, which advocate for

a balanced and varied diet. Other enhancements include, but are not limited to:

• Expanding whole grain options to include foods like quinoa, blue cornmeal, and teff to reflect dietary guidance and accommodate individual or cultural preferences.

moms’ individual breastfeeding goals.

• Providing more convenience and options within the dairy category, including flexibility on package sizes and non-dairy substitution options such as plant-based yogurts and cheeses and requiring lactose-free milk to be available.

• Including canned fish in more food packages, creating more equitable access to this under-consumed food.

• Requiring canned beans to be offered in addition to dried.

• Adding more flexibility in the amount of infant formula provided to partially breastfed infants to support

“Research shows that participants purchased healthier foods, and WIC-authorized stores carried healthier products, as a result of updates implemented in 2009,” Georgia Machell, interim president and CEO of the National WIC Association, said in a statement. “We are confident that these newest updates will yield similarly positive outcomes.”

Increased fruit and vegetable amounts will go into effect by June 9. State agencies that implement the WIC program will have up to two years to make the necessary administrative, infrastructure and technology changes and fully implement the rules.

KM softball takes down Crest for first place in Big South 3A

Kings Mountain High’s women’s softball team posted big victories over Crest and North Gaston last week and now is alone in first place in the Big South 3A Conference.

The Lady Mountaineers ended Crest’s long conference winning streak in front of a packed Mountaineer field Wednesday night 1-0, and followed that Monday with an 11-0 waltz past North Gaston. Paige Fleming doubled in Maddie Huffman with the walkoff winner in the bottom of the seventh against Crest.

Weaver also had a big night at bat going 3-for-3 with one RBI. Kandance Whitaker went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in. Zaniah Field and Anna Wooten collected multiple hits for the Mountaineers who had 12 hits on the night. Kings Mountain was scheduled to go to Stuart Cramer last night and will travel to Burns for a non-conference game tonight. They play at Forestview on April 19 and at Ashbrook on April 23. The Lady Mountaineers’ final regular season home game will be against South Point on April 26.

The pitching was strong on both sides as Maddie Huffman struck out 17 Chargers and Aidan Ledbetter struck out 13 Mountaineers. Kalie Weaver got the win on the mound in Monday night’s victory over North Gaston on the Mountaineers’ field.

Cleveland Community College hosted its annual Advisory Committee Day on March 20. The event brought together employer representatives in areas related to CCC’s programs. The goal of this annual event is to receive real-world input on how well CCC is training workers for local employers and how programs could be improved.

Over 100 employer representatives and faculty and staff from the college attended this year’s event. After lunch and a presentation by CCC President Dr. Jason Hurst, attendees moved to breakout sessions in individual program areas. They toured classrooms, labs, and shop areas and met with program faculty. The guests were asked to provide feedback and input on the programs, equipment, facilities, and outcomes. This feedback is a vital part of continuous improvement efforts at CCC.

Whether funding scholarships, athletic facilities, and training or enhancing classrooms and labs, each of the 1,366 gifts has a direct and lasting impact on Gardner-Webb and its students' success. Bulldog Nation painted the USA map red with donors from all 50 states and received especially strong support from alumni and friends in North and South Carolina. Generosity poured in from across the globe, too, with gifts coming from Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Austria, the United Arab Emirates, India, South Africa, and New Zealand. How to create more privacy on your property

An inviting backyard can serve as a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. After a long day at the office or an exhausting day spent transporting kids to and fro, it’s hard to resist the allure of a peaceful outdoor space in which to unwind. Privacy is a key com-ponent of any backyard oasis.

Some homes may be so remote that privacy isn’t an issue. But many suburban homeowners recognize they might need to tweak their landscapes if they hope to create a private oasis outside. Fencing or planting?

Most homeowners looking to create more privacy on their property will have to choose between fencing and planting. Fencing provides immediate privacy

because, once it’s installed, no one can see into the yard.

Fencing also doesn’t require watering or other immediate upkeep, which will be necessary when planting to ensure tree roots can establish themselves.

But planting has its benefits as well. Planting for privacy is essentially creating a living fence that can grow over time and provide even more privacy as trees reach maturity. Plants also tend to be less costly than fencing.

The home renovation experts at BobVila.com estimate that fencing projects typically cost between $1,667 and $4,075. However, fencing projects can cost considerably more than $4,000, especially for homeowners with large properties they want to enclose. Large, mature trees can be expensive, though

it’s unlikely they will cost as much as fencing. In addition, fencing requires more maintenance and will potentially need to be replaced, while native trees won’t require much upkeep and can last for generations.

Planting

Homeowners who choose to plant for privacy will next have to decide which type of plants to add to their properties. Evergreens pro-vide

year-round privacy because they don’t shed their leaves, so these are the ones most often chosen when creating a living fence. A number of varieties of evergreen trees can do the job, but it’s important that homeowners consult with a landscape architect prior to choosing trees so they can ensure the trees will thrive when faced with the growing conditions on their properties. During such a

perennials or ornamental grasses, or use landscape fabric and mulch.

• Use stones or gravel for a walkway. If commercially installed pavers or cement walkways are not within your budget, there are some affordable alternatives. Flagstone or individually purchased and spaced pavers and pea gravel can be used to create pathways. Some construction sites even offer free stones when asked. Soften the look with moss or other plants on the perimeter.

• Remove some lawn. Lawns can require hours of upkeep that may involve the application of expensive fertilizers and weed-killing products that are not always so eco-friendly. Reduce the size of a lawn by putting in a mixed planting bed of

• Look for free mulch. Municipal recycling centers may offer residents access to free mulch made from grinding up leaves, branches and other plant debris collected throughout the town. Simply bring a few containers to the recycling center and spread the mulch for an ornamental look or to insulate landscapes over winter and protect against weeds.

• Repurpose old items into planters. Old wheelbarrows, barrels, watering cans, and other items can be repurposed into container gardening vessels. Figure out if items marked for the garbage bin can be incorporated into garden features instead.

• Invest in plants that are easy to propagate. Perennials are the gardener’s friend when it comes to saving money. These plants sprout anew each year, and many, such as sedum, catmint, ferns, hostas, and blackeyed Susans, can propagate by division. Figure out the best times of year to divide

the plants and start growing them in individual containers before planting the sturdy new shoots in the ground. A single variety of plants grouped together in mass plantings is affordable and easy.

• Shop end-of season sales. Garden centers may begin to make room for holiday items come the fall. Take advantage of reduced costs on remaining plants and landscape accessories during this time of year. Plants can be covered or allowed to thrive indoors until they can be planted in the spring.

• Pool your resources.

Homeowners planning on a big landscaping or revitalization project may want to speak with neighbors to see if they’re interested in doing the same. Contractors guaranteed business from a few homes in the same neighborhood may be willing to negotiate lower prices for the volume of work on things like driveway repaving, deck- or fence-building, or installation of paver patios.

Some handy ideas can help homeowners transform landscapes without spending too much.

consultation, homeowners may discuss the following popular privacy trees.

• Leyland cypress: The Arbor Day Foundation ® notes that the Leyland cypress is popular for hedges and boundaries, likely because a typical tree reaches a mature height of 60’-70’ and can spread as wide as 25’. The Leyland cypress grows fast, which may appeal to homeowners who don’t want to wait to establish privacy.

• Green Giant Arborvitae: There are different varieties of the arborvitae, but the Green Giant tends to be the go-to option for privacy. The ADF notes that Green Giants will grow up to three feet per year until they reach maturity, providing a fast-growing option for privacy planters. The Green Giant can spread as wide as 20 feet at matu-

rity, which is another attribute that makes it so popular among homeowners desiring privacy.

• Eastern White Pine: The ADF notes that the eastern white pine, which can reach heights as high as 80 feet, is favored in spacious yards. That’s likely due to its height and its potential spread, which can reach 40 feet. Homeowners who choose the eastern white pine might like it for its resemblance to a Christmas tree, and in fact it is widely used for that purpose. The privacy provided by the eastern white pine is significant, but it might be best suited to especially large properties. Whether it’s fencing or planting, homeowners have many options to consider as they seek to create more privacy on their properties.

How to prepare soil for spring planting

Spring is a season of rejuvenation, and perhaps nowhere is that rebirth more noticeable than in the yard. Each spring, grass begins to grow again as inviting landscapes beckon people outdoors.

Extra sunlight and rising temperatures make spring a great time to plant flowers, grasses and trees. To ensure successful planting, homeowners must take steps to prepare the soil. Healthy soil can provide the ideal conditions for roots to take hold, helping plants establish themselves before potentially harsh summer conditions arrive. Preparing soil might seem like an extensive job, but a simple approach may be all that’s necessary to create conditions that promote plant growth this spring.

• Loosen the soil. Once debris has been cleared away, loosen the soil. Depending on the size of the area where you’ll be planting, you may need to invest in tools like a shovel, spade, spading fork, and/or a lawn edger. If you’re planting in a small area, such as a deck

See SOIL, Page 3B

• Clean up the previous months’ mess. Whether homeowners live in regions marked by year-round warmth or places where winter typically features heavy snowfall, it’s a good idea to clean up an area prior to spring planting. Fallen leaves, rocks, grass clippings, and other debris can contribute to compacted soil that makes it hard for plants to establish strong, healthy root systems. Clear away any debris prior to planting before taking the next step in your soil preparation routine.
