The City throws a spectacular July 4th event

The City of Kings Moun-

tain’s Tourism and Events did another awesome job putting on the Revolutionary 4th fireworks show at Deal Street Walking Track starting at 6 p.m. A special Lock Norman Pipe Band performance got everyone in a celebratory mood. Early in the event, DJ Drew Fulton kept the crowd engaged by spinning tunes and making announcements. Dance troupes performed. Inflatable slides and games kept the younger children entertained, along with bounce houses, face painting, balloon twisting, and caricature artists. Everyone enjoyed food from local vendors.

Actors from Liberty Mountain performed a scene

from the Battle of Kings Mountain, giving everyone a glimpse into the past when the ancestors of many residents played their role in “turning the tide of success and winning for us our seal of Independence,” as Thomas Jefferson credited the battle.

Kings Mountain’s fireworks show is the largest display between Asheville and Charlotte and historically draws crowds from across the region to the city.

Marketing, Tourism, and Special Events Manager Susan Mosk shared, “This was a team effort involving team members from many departments across the city. Thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s Revolutionary 4th such a wonderful event!”

Gov. Cooper signs new law targeting antisemitism

House Bill 942—The Shalom Act passed the North Carolina legislature almost unanimously, with support from every Republican and nearly every Democrat. Some critics fear the new rules could impede some people’s First Amendment rights. Governor Cooper signed the bill into law on July 1.

The bill’s sponsors called it The Shalom Act after the Hebrew word for “peace.”

The new law amends Chapter 12 of the General Statutes by adding a new section to read:

“North Carolina adopts the Working Definition of Antisemitism adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance on

Patrick Sr. Center Blood Drive July 16

Patrick Senior Center, at 909 E. Kings Street, is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, July 16, from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Who can you help by donating blood? Every day, blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those battling cancer. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, according to the Red Cross.

To ensure the safety of both patients and donors, these are some of the requirements donors must meet to be eligible to donate blood based on their donation type. You must weigh at least 110 lbs. and be in good health; that means you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes and want to donate blood, it’s important that you are being treated and that your condition is

May 26, 2016, including the contemporary examples of antisemitism set forth therein, as a tool and guide for training, education, recognizing, and combating antisemitic hate crimes or discrimination and for tracking and reporting antisemitic incidents in this State. The provisions of this section shall not be construed to diminish or infringe upon any right protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution or the Constitution of North Carolina.”

under control. In most states, you must be 17 or older to donate whole blood. Whole blood is the most flexible type of donation. When separated into its specific components of red cells, plasma, and platelets, it can be transfused in its original form or used to help multiple people. Every day, whole blood donations help save the lives of children and adults fighting to survive cancer, blood disorders, traumatic injuries, and more. The donation can be quick, but you should plan to be there for about an hour. You can donate whole blood as often as every 56 days up to 6 times yearly.

Please get in touch with Karen Grigg at the center to schedule an appointment. Your donation could save a life.

• Calling for the killing of Jews because of “a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion.”

• Making comments related to “the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.”

• Denying the existence or the scope of the Holocaust.

• Criticizing the government of Israel as racist or comparing any of its policies to Nazi Germany.

The bill adopts the matching definition of antisemitism as the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. A definition of the term can now be used for educational purposes or prosecuting hate crimes in North Carolina. It lays out 11 examples of antisemitic behavior or beliefs, including:

• Accusing non-Israeli Jews of being more loyal to Israel than to their own country.

Since it first created the list in 2016, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance has praised governments and private organizations worldwide, including North Carolina, that have adopted the rules. The law sparks freedom of speech worries in some corners. Those concerns weren’t enough to stop the bill from gaining broad bipartisan support in the months following the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas.

“Defining antisemitism is important to stopping it, and this new law helps do that as antisemitic incidents are on the rise,” Cooper said. “While we protect the right to free speech, this legislation helps to make our state a more welcoming, inclusive, and safe place for everyone.”

According to a 2021 estimate by Brandeis University’s Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies, approximately 1% of North Carolina residents are Jewish.

OPINION

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

In an October 30, 1975, article, Kings Mountain Mirror-Herald

Editor Tom McIntyre published a story about the groundbreaking for the Kings Mountain Fire Museum, explaining how it came to be.

Two weeks before, Chief Gene Tignor and volunteer firefighter Jerry White discussed what to do with the department’s 1938 Ford fire engine. Initially, they thought it could be displayed at the Community Center, now the KM Family YMCA.

According to the story, White asked Tignor if they could build a museum to house the old fire-fighting equipment. “It was a ‘spur of the moment thing,’ according to White. “But the idea caught fire, and the firemen sat down to discuss what would be involved, devised a plan for the building, and got an estimate on the cost if the firemen themselves did the actual labor.”

”The square building would have large windows on three sides and large doors for placing relics on display inside. The first relic to grace the museum when it is finished will be the 1938 fire truck, which has been restored to full operating capacity by the firemen over the past year or so. The old Ford was the first fire truck the city fire department bought.”

“We’ll also place on display the hats worn by the city’s four fire chiefs,” Tignor said, “along with their pictures. We’ll have other firefighting apparatus, now outdated, on display.”

The museum would

also house photographs of early-day firefighters, equipment, and the three or four large full-scale fires fought by the local department since its formal creation.

“The first fire fought by the city’s department was at 2 a.m. on May 22, 1931,” White said.

The article went on to explain that the department had old fire hose reels and the original brass slide pole used by the fire-

men in the 1930s. White said the brass pole would be cut into four equal lengths and used to rope off the area around the old fire engine.

“We hope to have cabinets containing fire hats and clothing firemen used to wear,” White said.

The plan called for the museum to be open by appointment on weekdays and full-time on weekends when there was enough manpower to staff the

Looking Back

building.

The structure was planned to have a concrete floor, brick Veneer walls, and large plate glass windows. It would also be well-lit at night from inside and outside.

A committee was formed with Mrs. Pat Tignor as chairperson to raise the remainder of the

funds needed to complete construction and purchase items for the museum. Mrs. Tignor is the widow of Pat Tignor, the city’s second fire chief. Tignor joined the department when it began in 1931 and served as a volunteer until Fire Chief Grady King’s death when he was appointed as chief.

Mrs. Helen Holt and Mrs. Charles Peterson served with Mrs. Tignor on the fundraising committee. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Mrs. Tignor said, “I think it’s wonderful that the firemen are getting this deserved recognition. I think the majority of the people of Kings Mountain feel the same way.” See PIECES, Page 5A

Be careful walking after dark, the police may be scary

Freedom to move about the country is a wonderful privilege.

Let us be appreciative of our freedom this fourth of July week.

Recently, I was taking a late night walk in Owenton, Kentucky. Owenton is a little town of maybe six hundred people in rural north central Kentucky. I had just finished watching the sad Biden-Trump debate and decided that a walk and some ice cream sounded good I walked to our local convenience store which is about a half mile from where I was staying in Owenton. It was a beautiful summer night and I only saw two cars on the road in route to the store. I bought an ice cream bar and had it eaten within twenty steps of the store when the only car I saw on the way home pulled up beside me and someone asked, “Sir, are you alright?” It was the local city police. I responded, “Yes sir, I’m doing fine.” He asked, “Would you like a ride home?” To which I replied, “No sir, I’m just out for a walk.” He then

asked, “Have you been drinking?” I replied, “No sir, just been eating a Snicker’s Ice Cream Bar.” He continued, “Are you sure?” “Yes sir, I’m sure.” He then asked, “Where are you going?” I told him the street which was only about five more minutes of walking time.

I thought all was well as he and another policeman drove off but they made a U-turn and pulled right back up in front of me. The cop got out of the car and told me he wanted to do a breathalyzer test. I’ve never had one in my life. I agreed to it. He was right in the middle of the street. I walked out to meet him and he told me to blow into the straw. I complied. He shook his head because, of course, the test was negative. He told me his name and I responded by telling him mine and we shook hands. He told me to be safe walking home. He then wanted to know exactly where I lived and I gave him the street name and house number.

As I walked up the street and neared home, I looked up. Once again, he and the other officer passed by. I suppose they

were checking to see if I went where I said I was going.

This was really dramatic and over the top. I was simply taking a walk. I wasn’t falling into the street or staggering from one side to the other. I was walking. He had no cause to stop and embarrass me but called me out into the middle of the street for a breathalyzer. Fortunately, not one car drove by while he was doing that. It’s a small town and no one was out at 11:10 at night. Almost no one gets out and walks in this town. If anybody has to go to the local convenience store, they drive their car even it’s just a block or two. Thus, maybe the police thought if someone was out walking then surely the person had to be up to no good or intoxicated.

I’m, very supportive of the police. I’m appreciative of all who work to keep us safe. We need good police officers protecting us. However, this was ridiculous. Don’t harass people just because you are bored and have nothing else to do. I feel sorry for the many people in this nation who have been racially profiled for years. They are often pulled over See SCARY, Page 5A

US House Judiciary Committee investigating NCSBE for denying ballot access to candidates

U.S. House of Representatives members are investigating the actions of the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE).

In a joint letter to the NCSBE, two House committees cited, “On June 26, 2024, the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) denied petitions filed by the political parties representing presidential candidates who otherwise have met the qualifications to appear on the November ballot in the state. The Committee on House Administration and the Committee on the Judiciary are concerned that the NCSBE’s decision to deny ballot access was politically motivated. The exclusion of the parties’ candidates may have intended to influence the 2024 presidential election by limiting candidates for which voters may cast their ballots.”

The investigation came after the state board denied ballot access to three political parties, even though each exceeded the number of signatures required to qualify.

The three parties support their candidates, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West, and Randall Terry, for the 2024 presidential race. Kennedy represents the “We the People” party. West is running for the “Justice for All” party. And Terry is campaigning under the “Constitution” party banner. Each party submitted more than the 13,865 votes required to appear on the ballot, but they

were denied ballot access by the NCSBE.

Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan (Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary) and Wisconsin Republican Rep. Bryan Steil (Chairman of the U.S. House Administration Committee) are leading the Congressional investigation, charging that the NCSBE is blocking the inclusion of the other candidates to manipulate the outcome of the upcoming election.

“Several political parties timely filed petitions with the NCSBE to allow each party’s respective candidates to appear on the November ballot in North Carolina. However, the NCSBE denied these petitions by a party-line vote; the Board’s three Democrat members voted to reject the petitions.”

Both Republicans on the Board voted in favor of approving the petition.

The letter further describes how the NCSBE denied one of the party’s ballot applications simply because the party’s chairman’s address was out of date on the petition sheets.

The House letter emphasized that time was running out, “Because the deadline to appear on the ballot is rapidly approaching, the NCSBE’s decision, if not reversed, means that these three candidates will be left off the November ballot.”

Because of the deadline, the federal committees requested the Board respond

to their request by Monday, July 8, so they can “conduct oversight” and avoid any undue “influence” or “sway” the Board is attempting to have over the election in North Carolina.

In response to the U.S. House letter, the NCSBE said it would reconsider the issue in July before the federal investigation commences.

The federal committees were not the first to react negatively to the Board’s decision, which faced widespread backlash.

The Libertarian Party of North Carolina released a statement supporting the petitions from the other three underdog parties, calling the decision “election interference.”

“The Libertarian Party of North Carolina (LPNC) is deeply disappointed, though hardly surprised, with the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) decision yesterday to limit the choices of the people of North Carolina in keeping the We the People Party, the Constitution Party, and the Justice for All Party off the ballot in North Carolina,” it posted on Twitter (X). “We resoundingly reject this partisan and anti-American decision that mocks the concept of democracy and destroys any pretense of representative government.”

From Page 4A Gene Tignor, the thenfire chief, is the younger brother of the late Pat Tignor. Although the Pat Tignors had no children of their own, Mrs. Tignor smiles when people say she “has 25 children — all of them firemen.”

Chief Tignor commented, “When T think about what we do, I think of what I read in the Bible — Do this in remembrance of me. Well, we’re doing this to remember people from the past. We’re put here to be of service to others, and that is something that should be carried over from generation to generation.”

Mayor Moss commented, ‘The citizens are grateful to everyone here

who helped create and develop the idea of a fire museum. This is a worthwhile project, and we’re all grateful to you men for pitching in to bring this project to a successful conclusion. We all pledge our support to this program.” The museum’s media coverage indicated it would open in December 1975. Anywhere, Anytime

(Part 2 of the “REST” series)

Rest is not just a physical state, but a spiritual one. It’s the ability to quiet our minds, be still, and recover our strength. We often associate rest with a specific time or place, but God’s rest is available to us at any moment and location because he is omnipresent. The omnipresence of God means that He is always with us, regardless of our circumstances. God is there, whether we’re experi-

encing joy, sorrow, energy, or fatigue. Jeremiah 23:24 (ESV) reminds us “Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.” God is present everywhere, waiting for us to seek Him out. Moses and God’s Presence

The story of Moses in Exodus 33:15 (ESV) illustrates this truth. When Moses asked God to reveal His presence, God replied, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” This promise assured Moses that God would always be with him. Just as Moses knew God’s

presence was with him, leading him through the wilderness to the Promised Land, we too can know and experience God’s presence. In those moments of uncertainty and darkness when we can’t feel His presence, we must remember the promise from Psalm 16:8 (NLT) “I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.” We can have confidence that He will give us rest - rest from our labors, rest from our worries, and rest from our fears.

The Helper

The Holy Spirit is a constant and permanent resident in our hearts and minds, empowering us to live as children of God. Jesus promised this divine helper in John 14:16 (AMP): “And I will ask the

Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor— Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever.” However, just as we need to tune into the right frequency to receive a radio broadcast, we must intentionally seek God’s presence to experience His peace and rest. This can be achieved by cultivating habits that draw us closer to Him, such as listening to uplifting worship music that praises God’s goodness or taking time for quiet reflection and journaling.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, I will exalt and praise your holy name. Your omnipresence is just another aspect of your majesty and nature. I will glorify your name. My heart rejoices that I can come into your presence and find

rest for my soul. Thank you, Lord, for peace, strength and comfort. I love you. In Jesus’ name - Amen.” CONNECTING

TO GOD: I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

NC Wildlife Resources Commission asking for help to document Hellbender sightings

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) requests the public's help in reporting sightings of hellbenders in local waterways.

Often, the unusual appearance of these oversized salamanders can be unsettling. However, these legally protected creatures are essential and productive in our local environment. The presence of hellbenders in a stream or river is a sign that the water is clean and relatively clear of pollutants, and they disappear when waterways become too clogged with silt or chemicals. Because of this, they can be important indicators of waterway health. Seeing a hellbender is a good sign that the waterway is healthy. The public can help biologists monitor this critical species by sharing information about hellbender sightings with the NCWRC.

The Eastern Hellbender is one of only three giant salamanders found in the world. North Carolina is home to more than 65 species of salamanders, with over 50 species in the mountain region alone. The Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus a. alleganiensis) is one of the largest salamanders found in North Carolina and the United States. Only the Greater Siren and the Twotoed Amphiuma, both large eel-like salamanders, are longer.

Although they are large and slimy, contrary to popular belief, hellbenders are not poisonous or venomous. They are quite harmless. Many hellbenders are killed by people out of fear or ignorance, which is part of why their survival in North Carolina is at risk. A common misconception is that hellbenders negatively impact trout or other fish populations. Hellbenders may occasionally grab bait on a fishing line if the opportunity presents itself or scavenge dead or discarded fish parts, but their primary food source is crayfish. In fact, fish can be more dominant predators of young or larval hellbenders than hellbenders can threaten fish.

Hellbenders are 16 to 17 inches long on average, but they can grow to be more than two feet long and weigh more than three pounds. The hellbender's skin on its back ranges in color from grayish brown to reddish brown. Darker spots or mottled patches may also be present on the back. The belly is usually one color and generally lighter than the back. The hellbender's head and body are flattened, with a

rounded snout and a pair of small, poorly-developed eyes. The hellbender is primarily nocturnal and relies on touch and smell to catch food, although it does see relatively well. The hellbender absorbs dissolved oxygen found in fast-running waters through its skin. A loose fold of skin called a "frill" runs from the base of the neck down to the tail on each side of its body. The frill increases the skin's surface area, helping the hellbender breathe. Hatchlings and 1-to-2-year-old hellbenders have external gills. Gill slits located at the base of the throat replace external gills when the young reach 1½ to 2 years. The young hellbender is then able to absorb oxygen through its skin. The hellbender is mature at about 6 to 8 years, at which time it is about 1 foot long. It will continue to grow for many years to come. The Eastern Hellbender is classified as a nongame species with no open season. It is state-listed as a species of special concern. Because hellbenders are a protected species, it is illegal to kill, harm, collect, harass, or sell them. The hellbender is also a species of the greatest conservation need in the N.C. Wildlife Action Plan.

other agencies, volunteers, universities, etc.) began a long-term inventory and monitoring project for hellbenders in 2007. Biologists aim to study hellbender populations in the state, revisit historical locations, discover new locations, monitor increasing habitat threats, and educate the public on hellbender con-

servation.

The public can help biologists in their efforts by informing them where they observe hellbenders. People who wish to share their hellbender sightings with the NCWRC can contact agency staff directly or submit their observations to (919) 707-0050 or lori. williams@ncwildlife.org.

The North Carolina Wildlife Action Plan (NCWAP) provides a foundation for State and Federal agencies and other conservation partners to think strategically about the roles they play for the environment and prioritize conservation efforts throughout the state. At a minimum, North Carolina's Plan is comprehensively evaluated and revised every 10 years, but interim updates are also expected.

You can help the NCWRC keep the content of the Plan relevant to current issues and needs by sharing your knowledge about the state's fish and wildlife species and their habitats, for example:

Do You Need a Digital Will?

Dear Savvy Senior, My wife and I had our estate plan – including a will, power of attorney and advance directive – drawn up about 10 years ago but have recently read that our plan should include a digital will too. What can you tell us about this? Almost 80

Dear Almost,

If you or your wife spend much time online, adding a separate digital will document to your estate plan that provides a list of your digital assets would be extremely helpful to your loved ones when you die, not to mention it will help protect your privacy. Here’s what you should know.

Do You Have Digital Asset?

The term “digital assets” refers to personal information that is stored electronically on either a computer or an online cloud server account that belongs to an individual. Anyone who uses email, has a PIN code protected cell phone, makes online purchases, or pays bills online has digital assets.

Digital assets generally require a username, a password, or a PIN to access

and can be difficult if not impossible to retrieve if someone is incapacitated or passes away.

Creating a digital will (also known as a digital estate plan) will help your loved ones access your electronic devices and online accounts more easily so they can manage your electronic affairs, according to your wishes, after you’re gone. This in turn will also protect your digital assets from hackers or fraud, which can happen to dormant accounts after you die.

How to Write a Digital Will Your first step in creating a digital will is to make an inventory list of your digital assets, which includes everything from hardware to email accounts. Here are a few categories to help kick-start your list:

• Electronic devices (computer, smartphone, tablet, external hard drive).

• Digital files (for photos, videos or documents)

• Financial accounts (like bank and brokerage accounts, credit cards, cryptocurrency).

• Bill paying accounts (utilities, mortgage accounts)

• Social media accounts (like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn).

• Email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, etc.).

• Cloud-storage accounts (like Google Cloud, iCloud, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive)

• Movie or music streaming services (like Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Apple Music)

• Online purchasing accounts (like Venmo or PayPal)

• Subscription services (magazines, newspapers, Amazon Prime, etc.).

• Reward programs (travel, stores, etc.).

• Membership organizations (AARP, AAA, etc.).

When making your list, you’ll need to include usernames, passwords, PINS, account numbers or security questions for accessing each account. And provide instructions on how you want your assets managed after your death. For example:

Do you want certain accounts closed, archived or transferred? Do you want specific files or photos to be deleted or shared with loved ones? Do you want your social media profiles memorialized or deleted?

Be clear and specific about your wishes.

You’ll also need to appoint a digital executor that you trust to execute your wishes after you die.

From a legal perspective, you should know that most states have enacted the Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act (RUFADAA), which legally recognizes digital estates. This law gives your personal representative or executor legally protected access to your online accounts.

Once your digital will is written, store it with your other estate plan documents either in a fireproof safe or file cabinet at home, on your computer hard drive, with your estate planning attorney or online at a reputable digital estate planning service like Everplans.com or Clocr.com. But make sure your executor knows where it is and has access to it.

Also remember to keep your digital will updated regularly when you create any new digital accounts or change passwords.
