■ OBITUARIES

Ashley Plonk Strachan

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL –

Ashley Plonk Strachan, 66, of St. Augustine, Florida, went home to be with Jesus on July 27, 2024.

She was born on July 25, 1958, to parents Patricia Anne Neisler Plonk and John Oates Plonk, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents and her eldest sibling, Anne Hunter Plonk Boone. She is now reunited with her parents, sister, and so many loved ones and friends who dwell in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Ashley’s childhood was filled with fun and adventure as the middle of five siblings. She and her sisters would often wear matching outfits, yet she was lovingly known as a tomboy who held no qualms about playing ball with the boys. She played clarinet in high school and loved music throughout her life. After high school, she attended Eastern Carolina University where she graduated as a Psychiatric Nurse. Later in her life she would achieve another professional goal,

gaining a master’s degree in counseling. Ashley’s 43year career as a psychiatric nurse changed lives. She was a highly skilled and passionate psychiatric caregiver who was up for every challenge set forth to her.

During her life, one of her biggest passions was traveling the world. She shared this with not only her children, Ben and Hannah and her first husband, Bob, but it transcended deeply into her 18-year marriage to her husband Dave, with whom she traveled 50 countries and made memories to last a lifetime. Ashley delighted in planning every detail of not only her travels, but many special occasions that will always be remembered by her family.

Ashley was a lifelong servant of Jesus Christ and loved her church as well as her small group family. One of her favorite activities each week was attending The Good News Church of St. Augustine with her husband Dave. She adored her church family and had a deep relationship with God which was the basis for how she lived her life.

Charles Simms Hill III

BESSEMER CITY, NC –Charles Simms Hill III, 72, of Bessemer City, NC, went to be with the Lord on July 28, 2024 at his home.

He was born in Gaston County, NC, He was Son of the late Charles Simms Hill Jr. and Sadie Splawn Hill and was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan N. Hill and his brother, Vernon Hill.

Charles was a faithful member of North Gaston Church of God. He worked in the textile industry, retir-

ing from Firestone after 36.5 years of service.

Charles enjoyed playing pool and video games, especially Zombies vs Plants. He loved traveling with his family and made many trips throughout the years to his favorite place, Pigeon Forge, TN.

Charles loved spending time with his family and cherished every moment he could be with his grandchildren. He also loved spending time with his canine companions, Paw Paw, Zelda, and Zeva. He was a dedicated provider and supportive family man to his beloved wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His guidance, commitment, and love will live on in the memories of all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife: Edith Bowles Hill, of the home; children: Charles “Tuba” Hill (Amy), Bessemer City, NC, Matthew Hill (Candy), Enfield, NC, and Stephanie Lago (Jacob), Bessemer City, NC; sister: Judy Hill Dockery, Gastonia, NC;

As the large Baby Boomer generation ages, their children are grappling with death care in increasing numbers. Burial and cremation services can be confusing and costly. Families needing these services often struggle to compare and price services since rates are not easily or quickly obtained without a call or in-person visit to the service provider. The Federal Trade Commission, one of the federal regulatory bodies for the death care industry, is expected to decide sometime this year whether it will require funeral homes to list their prices online. The surprise price of funeral services can add additional stress to a family already grieving for the loss of a loved one. The mandated price transparency would lessen the blow by requiring funeral homes and burial services to openly share the costs online to help guide with their decisions when care is needed.

Funeral businesses are required by the rules of the FTC’s 1984 Funeral Rule to give prices over the phone and to give a printed copy of a General Price List (GPL) to anyone appearing in person and requesting information about funeral goods and services. But prices are “subject to change without notice.”

Families may not be prepared for the cost of additional services, such as embalming, which funeral directors can insist on even though it’s not legally required. That leaves many in a pinch, having to find a funeral home and choose services with virtually no opportunity to comparison shop because, in most

Ashley was the definition of a beautiful woman inside and out. She loved to cook for her family, care for her grandchildren, and continually thought of others over herself. She is survived by her husband David Oakes, her son Benjamin David Strachan, daughter Hannah Strachan Williams and husband Scott, brother Carl Neisler Plonk and wife Margot, brother John Oates Plonk, III and wife Lisa, and sister Laura Foust Plonk Ball and husband Gary. Ashley leaves behind five beautiful grandchildren; Luke, Ashlynn, Rebecca, Sally, and Isaiah, as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces, and friends whose lives she lit up.

The family wants to thank Cancer Treatment Centers of North Florida, Dr. Starr from Mayo Clinic, the staff of Flagler Hospital, and all others who worked to help with Ashley’s care.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Good News Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with Reverend Andrew Nicholson officiating.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the parlor of Harris Funeral Home . Interment will be held in Bessemer City Cemetery, Bessemer City, NC.

states, they have only a couple of days after a person’s death to take care of the deceased’s body. Both immediate burial and direct cremation are regarded as “minimal services.” This typically means the body is picked up at the place of death and transported directly to the cemetery or crematory. As with other types of disposition, the purchaser has the right to provide their own container or select one from the funeral home. The cost for the service does not include the container unless stated otherwise.

Although some funeral homes state that the cost of their basic services is included in the cost of immediate burial or direct cremation, what they really seem to mean is that the cost of the basic services provided is included proportionally. In their price for Direct Cremation, some providers will tell you that the price of the cremation itself is not included; others state that cremation is included “if relevant,” a very confusing statement! An update to the Federal Trade Commission’s publication, “Complying with the Funeral Rule” (April 2015), now eliminates the “cremation, if relevant” language. Providers must either include the words “and cremation” or explain that an “…added crematory charge will be estimated or itemized in the Statement of Funeral Goods and Services Selected.”

Only about 25 percent of Americans do any advanced planning for their funerals or the funerals of their loved ones, according to a 2018 National Funeral Director Association Consumer Awareness and Preferences study.

The FCANC is a grassroots, all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on funeral consumer education and advocacy. The organization has been referred to as “the Consumer Reports®” of the state funeral industry, dedicated to protecting consumers’ rights to choose a meaningful and affordable funeral.

The FCANC shared the results of the 2023 Funeral Home Price Survey, which contacted over 750 licensed funeral homes in the state. The survey covers three comparable prices among providers: the Basic Services Fee, Direct Cremation Fee, and Immediate Burial Fee.

Basic Services Fee — All funeral homes charge what’s called the “basic services fee,” the only charge that you cannot decline to pay. The fee is meant to cover all the administrative things common to all funerals, simple or elaborate, such as planning the service, filing the necessary paperwork and procuring permits, coordinating arrangements with the cemetery or crematory or any other third parties, and overhead expenses related to the funeral home facility and operations.

Direct Cremation — Simple cremation without ceremony where the purchaser provides the container.

Immediate Burial — Simple burial without ceremony where the purchaser provides the casket.

The 2023 survey included two service providers in Kings Mountain. Basic service costs at Harris Funeral Home, on 108 South Piedmont Avenue, were

A black bear was sighted near Lake Montonia last week, so take precautions if you are out and about in that area. That property is adjacent to Kings Mountain State Park, which is known for black bear sightings.

According to the Humane Society, don’t fear the worst if you see a black bear in your yard. A youngster may simply be passing through in search of a home of their own, or an adult may be checking out an enticing smell or interesting sound. Usually, when they find out there are people around, they’ll head for the hills, never to be seen again.

If you do encounter a bear, remain calm and remember that the bear is likely more scared of you than you are of them. Attacks by black bears on people are very rare and most black bears can be easily scared away with the following approach:

• Stand and face the bear directly. Never run away from or approach them.

• Make yourself look as big as possible by spreading your arms or, better yet, a coat.

No cost information was provided for Clay-Barnette of Kings Mountain – Funerals, Cremations, & Aquamations at 303 Phifer Road in the survey. The costs at Sisk-Butler Funeral & Cremation Services, 730 Gastonia Highway, Bessemer City, included $1,995 for basic services, $2595 for direct cremation, and $2,535 for immediate burial services. In Shelby, Enloe Mortuary on 231 North Lafayette Street charges $2,550 for basic services, $4,150 for direct cremation, and $3,120 for immediate burial services. Robert Morgan Funeral & Cremation Service at 132 East College Avenue offers basic services for $1,300, direct cremation services for $1,300, and immediate burial services for$2,000. Rates for Genesis’ Funeral Services & Chapel on 407 East Grover Street, Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home & Crematory on 106 Cherryville Road, Clay-Barnette Funerals, Cremations, & Aquamations Center on 1401 West Dixon Boulevard, and Cleveland Funeral Service & Crematory on 2518 West Dixon Boulevard were not reported in the survey.

FCANC compiles this survey as a public service to give consumers a general comparison of funeral prices. FCANC is a nonprofit, non-sectarian, all-volunteer organization dedicated to educating the public about the many options available in planning the disposition of bodily remains. We are also advocates for consumer choice at end-of-life and monitor pertinent legislation and regulatory activities.

FCANC Board of Directors, composed of twelve (12) volunteers, set out to gather price information from these funeral homes. General Price Lists (GPLs) are, in most cases, not found on funeral home websites, so the organization emailed, called, and sometimes visited the burial service providers to request pricing details. Responses from contacted funeral homes were mixed, with some providing the information and others refusing to cooperate. As a result, the survey includes reports of NP (not provided) when data was not forthcoming and NA (not applicable) when a specific service

• Make as much noise as possible by yelling, banging pots and pans, or using other noisemaking devices.

• If the bear approaches and you have bear spray, spray the bear as they approach.

• In the rare case that a black bear attacks you, fight back (don’t play dead).

• After the bear leaves, remove whatever attracted them to the location (barbecue grill, bird feeder, pet food, or garbage).

If you choose to carry bear spray with you, review these things to know:

• Bear spray is a deterrent made of red pepper oil (oleoresin of capsaicin). It inflames the eyes and upper respiratory system. If used properly, it can effectively deter an aggressive bear.

• Treat bear spray like a firearm. Contents are under pressure: Spray comes out at more than 70 mph and could cause permanent eye damage.

• Do not pre-spray objects. Bear spray does not work like an insect repellent. It may attract a bear because of the residue’s strong odor if used this way.

• When purchasing, look

was not applicable to the listed funeral home/crematory.

Most people haven’t heard of the most important set of consumer protections available to grieving families, as outlined in the FTC’s 1984 Funeral Rule. This Federal Trade Commission rule is like a consumer’s bill of rights when shopping for a funeral. The Funeral Rule gives consumers:

• The right to pick and choose only the items they want — funeral homes can’t require you to buy a package of goods and services.

• The right to printed, itemized price lists — funeral homes are required to give you a printed price list at the beginning of any arrangements discussion.

• The right to factual information — funeral directors must be truthful and cannot claim that things like embalming or certain caskets are required by law when that’s not true.

• The right to see a price list for caskets before going into the showroom.

• The right to get price quotes over the phone.

• The right to build or buy

for canisters marked “Bear Spray” or “Bear Deterrent” with an EPA registration, 1-2% capsaicin and capsaicinoids, and a 25-foot (8 m) or more range.

• Keep the spray away from heat (120°F) and cold (-7°F). In extreme heat, pressure can build until the canister explodes; in extreme cold, pressure may decrease, so the canister may not spray properly.

• When traveling, remember that safety regulations prohibit airlines from transporting bear spray. If traveling in a small plane or helicopter, be sure to inform the pilot before your departure. The pilot may allow you to store bear spray in the aircraft’s float or outer compartment.

• When camping, keep bear spray accessible at night.

• If you have a partially used canister of bear spray or it is beyond its expiration date, dispose of it or use it for training purposes. Do not rely on it as a deterrent. A completely emptied bear spray canister may be discarded as trash or disposed of as hazardous waste. Check with your local waste authority.

their own casket outside the funeral home without paying a “casket-handling fee” to the funeral director. While funeral products and services are often purchased at an emotional time, they are a business transaction. Funeral homes know this well, and grieving people are not usually in the mood to negotiate or question. As consumers, we need to take responsibility for educating ourselves about what we do and don’t want in a funeral and what we can and can’t afford. While price is an important factor when choosing a funeral home, reputation and quality of service should also be considered. Unfortunately, those are more difficult to measure. Is the mortuary a local family business or owned by a large corporation (such as SCI or Dignity)? Will you be expected to sit through a high-pressure sales routine? Are the funeral directors straight with you in answering questions? Will they support you in having just the type of arrangements you want and can afford?

Morris Scrap Metal going strong for over nine decades

One of Cleveland County’s oldest businesses is still going strong after 93 years.

Located at 2045 Shelby Rd. on the outskirts of Kings Mtn., Morris Scrap Metal Co., Inc. was founded way back in 1931 by Nelson Earl Morris as an auto salvage yard. In the 1960s, Earl’s son Jerry entered the business. The competitive spirit that Jerry’s college baseball career had exhibited was shifted to the scrap metal arena and he expanded the business to include recycling.

In 1990, after graduating from Western Carolina University, Jerry’s son Neil came on board.

Neil talked about how Morris Scrap Metal did its part during WWII supplying material that would become tanks, ships, planes, and other products.

“I remember my grandfather talking about supplying scrap metal to the government for the war effort,” he said.

In addition to Neil, his brother Chris is also carrying on the Morris tradition along with the help of seventeen employees including five truck drivers, three office workers, and nine personnel on the “yard”.

The entire crew operates like an extended family. Yard employee Francisco Cardo is originally from Cuba and came to Morris Metals over 19 years ago.

seven years.

“I help with buying materials,” Lankford said. “Little pieces, big pieces. If I don’t have it, I can get it.”

Neil explained how the business rolls.

“Probably 95 percent of our business is industrial scrap metal from fabrication,” he said. “The other five percent is cans and scrap that

Recycling and its importance to the environment is a big part of the Morris Scrap scenario.

“It is more energy efficient and better for the environment to recycle used metal than to dig it out of the ground,” Mor-

Non-ferrous metal recycling at Morris includes- aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, nickel, lead, tin, and platinum. Ferrous metal recycling includes- mild, carbon and stainless steel, cast and wrought iron tools, machinery and equipment, household appliances and electronics, automotive parts and cores, wrecked, salvage and junk vehicles, industrial and construction overruns, industrial and construction salvage.

To help its suppliers keep the scrap metal flowing, Morris Scrap

Metal also has a wide web of contacts to help with any size commercial or industrial demolition project, industrial rigging and specialized environment services. The network makes Morris one of the most comprehensive industrial services providers in the scrap metal industry.

A walk around the Morris yard is well, awe-inspiring. The variety and mass of scrap metal on the yard at Morris is seemingly endless. Small mountains of scrap aluminum, steel, stainless steel, barrels, beams, structural supports, old awnings, cans, sheets, rolls, etc. are stacked and heaped on the yard. If it’s metal, it’s at Morris.

It takes some big equipment to deal with the sea of scrap. One is a huge metal shredder that Neil brought over from Italy. Another is a 750-ton shearing machine that can cut metal up to 2 ½ inches thick like slicing bread.

A HRB Non Ferrous Baler for aluminum and copper, nine trucks and five cranes add to the action. In addition, the firm has 300 rolloff boxes and a number of flatbed, gondola, low boy, and drop deck trailers.

Morris Scrap Metal is highly regarded in its industry. The company is a member of the Recycling Assoc. of North Carolina and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. It was also the subject of a feature story in Recycling Today magazine. Morris Scrap Metal is successful due to its combination of sound and modern business practices, combined with nearly a century of experience supplying and processing, scrap metal in an environmentally responsible way. Neil says he and the other employees at Morris are looking forward to a future for the company as bright as scrap aluminum on a sunny day.

“We plan to keep doing what we have been doing, and to be the best at it,” he said. For more information visit http://www.morrisscrapmetal.net/index.htm or call 704-739-3869.

Sabbath Rest

Throughout the

we see examples of rest being emphasized as a vital part of our relationship with God. The Sabbath was a day set apart from the rest of the week, a day for rest and rejuvenation. It was a time to think about God’s goodness and provision and to recharge for the week ahead. But rest isn’t just about taking a break from work or responsibilities; it’s also about trusting in God’s sovereignty. When we rest, we’re acknowledg-

ing that God is our Rock, our Refuge, and our Provider. We’re saying, “I trust that You will take care of me, even when I’m not working.” Psalm 91:1-2 (AMP) says, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will remain secure and rest in the shadow of the Almighty [whose power no enemy can withstand]. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust [with great confidence, and on whom I rely]!”

Spiritual Rejuvenation

When we rest in God, we’re allowing Him to refresh and restore us. In Psalm 23:1-3 (AMP), David writes,

“The LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], shall not want. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” Our good Father by His Holy Spirit leads us to pastures where the grass is lush and the air is fresh, free from the worries and stress of the world; He quenches our thirst and soothes our soul, providing a sense of peace and tranquility.

Reflection

In addition, rest is also a time for reflection and intro-

spection. When we take time to rest and reflect on God’s Word, we’re reminded of His faithfulness and provision. The Bible is full of examples of people who rested and were blessed by God as a result. Abraham rested in the promise of God’s plan for his life (Hebrews 11:8-12) Moses rested in God’s guidance (Exodus 14:13-14), and Paul rested in the Father’s plan even in hardship (Acts 20:22-24). Let’s follow their examples and allow God to strengthen, comfort, and instruct us as we bask in his Presence.

PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You today acknowledging that You are my Shepherd, Savior, and Rock. I confess that sometimes I try to handle things on my own. Forgive me for my pride. Help me to trust in You. Fill

me with the Holy Spirit, and cause your word to burn within my soul. May my soul rest in You today, In Jesus’ name we pray - Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Albemarle celebrates National Intern Day with a unique opportunity for KM native

Kings Mountain native Vega Weston is fulfilling an exciting opportunity to support the community through her summer internship at Albemarle, according to a press release. “I was born and raised in Kings Mountain,” she said. “I graduated from Kings Mountain High School. I’ve been here my whole life, and my family has lived here for as far back as I can remember.”

As a first-generation college student at North Carolina State University, Vega adds, “Having a company like Albemarle in Kings Mountain allows me to come back and work here in my desired field when, that wasn’t an option.”

A business major with a minor in global leadership and team development, Vega’s interest was piqued when she visited the Albemarle Kings Mountain website to inquire about internship opportunities and found an opening with the community affairs team. “I like working with people and finding ways to give back to the community, not only as a hobby but as a job,” she said. “This position made me gravitate toward an internship at Albemarle this summer.” Vega’s internship is unique as it

combines two roles of working closely with the community affairs team, while assisting with the Albemarle Foundation. “It gives me two perspectives – one from the corporate side, and one from being on-site in the community,” she said. In her role with the community affairs team, she has had numerous opportunities to connect and reconnect with the Kings Mountain community—even participating in an event at her alma mater.

“I work with two of my former high school teachers from chemistry and natural science,” she said. “It’s cool to come back and work as a team. They’ve been able to mentor me further and show me how things operate in the workplace.” Vega says Albemarle’s internship program has been great from a mentoring standpoint. “Everyone has been teaching me so much and they support me professionally and personally. I’m very grateful for their mentorship.” Vega helps organize and participate in Albemarle’s community meetings, open houses, and sponsored events with nonprofit partners. She is currently behind the scenes organizing a char-

ity kickball tournament for employees.

In her role with the Albemarle Foundation, Vega is instrumental in supporting a new tool that allows employees to find volunteer opportunities in the area. For every volunteer hour logged in the portal, Albemarle makes a $25 donation to an organization of the employee’s choosing. If an employee chooses to donate more, the Albemarle Foundation will match the donation up to $4,000. Vega also reaches out to area non-profit organizations to potentially form partnerships with Albemarle, noting that she is helping organize a volunteer fair for employees to connect with community organizations and volunteer opportunities. “Albemarle has opened doors to better working opportunities. With the potential opening of the mine, there is an opportunity for a significant number of well-paying and stable jobs in the community,” she added. After graduating in May 2025, Vega says she would love to work for Albemarle. “Albemarle has been such an important player in Kings Mountain and this internship has given me a chance to do good. I’m grateful for being able to do that,” she said.

Library's Summer Adventure 2024

was fun for all ages during

Imagine drum circles,

Spoon Man, Shakespeare, and more! Kids aged 6-12 enjoyed pirate tales, science wonders, and bubble magic every Wednesday. Lego lovers and diamond painters had a blast, while adults savored author talks and farm trips. The grand finale? A field day with games and goodies at Patriot Park! And don't forget the Cultural Enrichment team spreading joy at the Farmer's Market. As summer bids adieu, Mauney Memorial Library gears up for the next big escapade!

FUNERAL

From Page 2A

Whatever you chooseburial, a full funeral, cremation, alkaline hydrolysis, or a simple memorial service - you can get the most from your funeral dollar by shopping around ahead of time. Learning how to compare prices and services among funeral homes will put you in control when a death occurs. Consumer surveys show that most people simply use the same funeral home they’ve used before, just because they’ve used it before. But if you don’t shop around, you might be paying thousands more than you need to for comparable services elsewhere in town.

Ask clergy, social workers, neighbors, and friends—including FCANC members!— for their recommendations. We encourage you to shop around and plan ahead when you are not under any pressure. That way, you can be assured of final arrangements that are consistent with your values and budget. If the FTC decides to proceed with the change, it will issue a notice of proposed rulemaking and open public comment again, this time regarding the specifics of the proposed changes.

ALWS Festival Aug. 10

Every year, the ALWS celebrates everyone involved in making all its visitors feel welcome during the games. Since 2014, the Saturday prior to the first day of games has served as the kickoff to an amazing week of baseball. As they celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Festival in 2024, expect it to be larger, louder, and longer! This year’s festival will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 10 p.m. It will have an expanded footprint, allowing more activities, vendors, and entertainment. The festival will also celebrate its local Land of Rhythm & Roots with free music on-stage at 1 pm. As the sun sets, the excitement builds up to a 7 pm concert featuring not one but TWO headliner performers. Bring your chairs and join us for an unforgettable sum-

mer night on the streets of Uptown Shelby. It’s more than just a concert; it’s a celebration under the stars, where music and memories intertwine with summer’s favorite sport, baseball.

Prepare to be whisked away into a world filled with nostalgia and fun at their reimagined American Legion World Series Festival! They’re bringing back the golden days with a nostalgic baseball theme that’s a perfect pitch for families, locals, visiting players, and all the little sluggers out there. Me-

ander through the shady uptown streets lined with vendors showcasing handmade marvels, from gleaming jewelry to trendy clothing. Let’s not forget the essential baseball eats – hot dogs, popcorn, and Cracker Jack treats are just the start! It’s a culinary home run for foodies and families alike!

Back on stage in Uptown Shelby this year will be the Little Miss ALWS pageant, beginning at 10 am. Dust off your baseball caps, and join them for a day where every moment scores a home run! They can’t wait to welcome you to Cleveland County and its field of dreams – where the spirit of summer, baseball, and great music come alive.

The Kings Mountain Lady Mountaineers tennis team looks forward to a promising season this fall in the Big South Conference. The Lady Mountaineers lost only one senior from last year’s team, Melissa Brooks. “It was a big loss,” noted Coach Rick Henderson, “but we have an incoming freshman (Seanna Simon) who I hope will fill the void. Simon was the number one seed for the Kings Mountain Middle School team.”

Having won five Big South Conference championships in the last eight years is definitely a KMHS record for either boys or girls tennis.

Coach Henderson, a 17year veteran coach of the program, has five returning starters in Katherine Frye, Kayla McSwain, Elizabeth Bolt, Lillie Bolin and Jasmyn Accor. “I’m looking forward to these five returning players along with Simonn to help guide our team to another conference

championship,” he said. Annie Byers and Amelia Pruitt are other returning players and Henderson said. “I’m looking for them to break into the starting lineup eventually.”

In order to participate during practice, the student athlete has to have an updated physical on file. Student athletes are also required to bring their tennis gear and plenty of water/ Gatorade. Practice times will run from 5-6:30 p.m.

I can remember in years past, starting to do extensive scouting to find where deer might be during the opening season. I focused on paths and funnels and signs. As I got older and wiser about hunting, I realized it’s not as important to know their journey, as it is their destination. And that destination, except for the rut, will always focus on needs. Food, water, and shelter (safety). When it comes to food, deer are like us. They like a variety that comes from different seasons. For instance, I’m enjoying watermelon right now, knowing it won’t be long until I’ll not be able to get another one. This variety works for everything except bacon. Bacon is always in season and is always a destination. But I digress. When it comes to variety for deer right now, they are anticipating the acorns that are getting ready to fall. Around the same time, fruit trees will drop their treasure, and every deer within miles will line up waiting for the next thud of an apple or pear. So, instead of trying to cut them off at the pass, I choose to just wait at the place I know they’re coming to. I use to teach this same idea in basketball. I would tell young players who were on defense, that instead of chasing the opposing player who has the ball, all over the court, just wait on him at the goal. After all, that’s where he’s headed. This concept saved them from fainting from exhaustion, many times. And when it comes to deer hunting, this same concept has saved me from hours of wonder, worry, and work. And that gives me more time to rest with confidence, because I trust the outcome.

Have you ever realized there are some things in our Christian life where we know the destination? I mean there are some things in our life where we don’t have to wonder, worry, and work so hard toward. These are destinations that are already determined and all we have to do is wait and watch. For instance, when it comes to our provision, God has promised He will meet all our needs according to His riches in Heaven. That means I don’t have to wonder, worry, or work as if everything is up to me. I just need to realize I’m already under His oak tree. And what about all of those times we’ve made some really bad decisions, or when we have sinned deeply? Well, He’s got that covered too, because He has promised He will take all the seemingly unassociated pieces of our life and make a beautiful quilt. The destination is set. So, are you fretting over the path, or unsure about the signs? Forget about that. Just put your stand where God is already coming, and just rest with confidence, and trust that God has a good outcome heading your way.

Dodge Ram, Jeeps investigated for electrical and engine issues

On July 22, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced it would investigate complaints about Ram 1500 pickup trucks and Jeep Wagoneer sports utility vehicles (SUVs). The probe covers approximately 150,000 vehicles made by Stellantis for the Dodge Ram and Jeep Wagoneer brands for the 2022 model year. All have the company's 5.7-liter Hemi

e-Torque mild hybrid system, which allows the vehicle to power itself.

Stellantis is a French-Italian-American multinational automotive manufacturing corporation formed in 2021 from the merger of the Italian–American conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the French PSA Group. The company's headquarters is in Hoofddorp, Netherlands.

It accomplishes this by converting captured energy from the braking system into electricity for the battery pack, which it uses to power various electrical components. ETorque engines replace the alternator with a 48-volt battery-powered belt drive and a motor generator. The motor generator provides extra torque to the crankshaft during gear

changes. Simultaneously, the motor generator uses the 48volt battery pack to increase torque.

Many complaints state that the vehicle's engine would shut off while traveling at a slow speed, leading the vehicle to shift into park and apply the emergency brake. The vehicles were sometimes able to be restarted.

In addition, many complaints state that the malfunction warning light with the battery fault symbol appeared on the dash. Complaints state that a low voltage condition

fault is present, and sometimes, the vehicle cannot restart.

On April 13, 2023, FCA announced a recall for a defect in certain 2021 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 5.7L eTorque engines, affecting nearly 131,000 vehicles. The recall described a problem in the powertrain control module software that can cause an incorrect fuel mixture condition and result in an engine stall.

In February, ODI conveyed the complaints about the 2022 Ram 1500 and Wagoneer vehicles to FCA. After reviewing the complaints, FCA stated that "the loss of motive power was likely not caused by an over-rich fuel condition (as outlined in the previous April 2023 recall),

but rather some other cause." Stellantis told investigators that an electrical problem is more likely to cause the most recent complaints about the engine stalling.

The ODI opened the preliminary evaluation to assess the scope, frequency, root cause(s), and consequences of these loss and stalls of motive power incidents. Additionally, ODI may expand the scope of the subject population during the investigation if needed.

Stellantis says it's cooperating with the probe and that owners who see symptoms in their vehicles should contact their dealership. To review the ODI reports, go to https://NHTSA.gov.\

Long-Term Care Benefits for Veterans and Surviving Spouses

Dear Savvy Senior, I understand that the Veterans Administration has a benefit that can help veterans and spouses with long-term care costs. We recently had to move my elderly father into an assisted living memory care facility, and my mother will probably need care too in the near future. What can you tell me? Searching for Aid

Dear Searching, The Veterans Administration (VA) does indeed have an underutilized benefit that can help wartime veterans and their surviving spouses pay for a variety of longterm care costs.

This benefit, called “Aid and Attendance,” is a special pension that’s paid on top of existing VA pensions for eligible veterans and surviving spouses. In 2024, it pays a maximum of $2,727 a month to married veterans; $2,300 a month to single veterans; or $1,478 a month to a surviving spouse. The money is tax free, and can be used to pay for assisted living, memory care, nursing home or in-home care services.

Currently, around 156,000 veterans and survivors are receiving the Aid and At-

tendance benefit, but many thousands more are eligible who either don’t know about it or don’t think they qualify.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, your dad must have served at least 90 days of active military service with at least one day of service during a period of war, and not have been discharged dishonorably. Single surviving spouses of wartime vets are eligible if their marriage ended due to death.

In addition, your dad will also have to meet certain thresholds for medical and financial need to be eligible.

To qualify medically he must be either disabled, or over the age of 65 and need help performing basic everyday living tasks such as eating, bathing, dressing or going to the bathroom. Being blind or in a nursing home due to disability or receiving Social Security Disability or SSI also qualifies him. Single surviving spouses have no age restrictions, but they must require help with basic everyday living tasks to be eligible.

To qualify financially your parents “net worth,” which includes assets and annual income combined, must be below

$155,356 in 2024.

To calculate this, add up your parent’s assets, which includes their personal property (like investments, real estate, etc.) excluding their primary home and vehicles. And tally up their income over the past year (including Social Security, pensions, interest income from investments, annuities, etc.), minus any out-ofpocket medical expenses, prescription drugs, insurance premiums and longterm care costs over that same period of time.

The VA also has a three-year lookback to determine if your parents transferred any assets to ensure they would qualify for benefits. If so, they may be subject to a penalty period of up to 5 years.

How to Apply

If you need some help, you can appoint a Veteran Service Officer (VSO), a VA-accredited attorney or claims agent to represent your dad. See VA.gov/ogc/apps/ accreditation/index.asp to locate someone.

If your dad is eligible, it can take months for his application to be processed, so be patient.

You should also know that if your dad’s Aid and Attendance application is approved, the VA will send a lump sum retroactive payment covering the time from the day you filed the application until the day it was approved. Then your dad receives monthly payments going forward.

Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

To apply for Aid and Attendance, you’ll need to fill out VA Form 21-2680 and mail it to the Pension Management Center (PMC) for your dad’s state. You’ll need to have your dad’s doctor fill out the examination information section. Or you can also apply in person at a VA regional office near your parents. For more information or to download application forms see VA.gov/pension/ aid-attendance-housebound. You can also call the VA at 800–827–1000 if you have questions.
