Totally Free Clothes Store still in the business of giving… and giving, and GIVING!

Located in a small brick building at 318 Gidney Street in Shelby, the Totally Free Clothes Store is still going about the business of being a blessing to the many folks it helps daily.

Well… almost daily, as they are closed on Wednesdays, according to N.C. natives Melanie and Mark Burr, who run the place.

Melanie said she has been affiliated with the store for five years, when it was over by the Food Lion on S. Lafayette St., and Mark noted he has been working with her for about two years now. They said they have about 20 volunteers who help them operate the store.

“We have some that work a particular day of the month and some who come in when they can,” said Melanie.

As per their small handout, “…each person (who comes to the store) may get 20 items per month absolutely FREE!” There are some restrictions however; they only allow 15 people in the store at any one time (because of the store’s size); and anyone shopping in the store must have an ID or something with their name on it, such as a driver’s li-

cense or piece of mail like a utility bill or something similar.

The two noted the store has many volunteers from local churches, they do have many different volunteers who reach out to them to help in the store.

“Everything you see in here has been donated,” said Mark. “Shelving, hangars, plastic bags, boxes. You name it; it has been donated.”

On one of the handouts folks are given when they enter the

store it is noted they are “looking” for volunteers.

“We allow each shopper, or person, to get 20 items of clothing and shoes per month free,” said Melanie. “In 2024, we gave away over 177,000 items to

The Burrs said they are there, with their volunteer helpers, “pretty much every day of the week.” The store is open from 10 a.m., to 3:45 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Additionally, said Mark, they do work with the court system and have community service workers

time volunteer. Said Mark, “the main things we need right now are more volunteers and some form of steady funding.” Melanie added, “And we would like to get a van donated to the store or a grant with which to buy one.”

She continued, “What we do ting volunteers, although they

helping people. As for funding, our marketing manager, Cat Wesson, is currently working with local colleges and high schools to procure funding as well as more volunteers.”

The store does a mobile clothes ministry every Thanksgiving and Melanie noted she works with Elizabeth Elementary School in giving clothes to children there who may have a need. She noted also they work with the Veteran’s Administration, out of Asheville.

Mark said, “There are a lot of kids, a lot of people, out there who don’t have clothes, or backpacks, or even sleeping bags if they have to sleep outside. If we have those, we give them out as well.”

Mark noted they consider themselves a Christian, or faith-based, store.

To that end, they have no revenue, so everything that comes in, he said, “…goes out by way of giving back to the community via the free giveaway program.”

“When you get everything in for free; you give it away for free,” said Mark.

When asked why folks had to have an ID, the Burrs noted that in the past, when they first started, “… we were giving away so many clothes that folks would come in and take items, then later sell them to someone else.”

It’s nothing, said Melanie, for them to have as many as 200-plus people come in on a daily basis, which has facilitated their

having to limit how many folks can be in the building at any one time.

Mark and Melanie are most proud of the fact their store and the volunteers feel as if they are a family.

“We consider everybody in here part of the family,” he said. Melanie added, “Our volunteers work very hard! We are all tired at the end of the day, but it’s all worth it.”

“That’s right,” said Mark. “One of our most rewarding things is someone coming in and telling us how wonderful this place is and how they’ve been helped.”

Mark and Melanie stress the store isn’t affiliated with any church or group, adding the store and its mission/ ministry is where they “… need to grow.” They will admit they would like to be in a larger facility, however, as they appear to be outgrowing even this one, as it is.

“I don’t mind asking for things,” stated Melanie. “We have grown, yes. But we would like a larger space, in order to give out more food.”

For those who wish to help, or want to help the store on a daily or weekly basis, please contact Mark and Melanie at either (704) 692-2389, or (704) 4182734, or email them at total lyfreeclothes@gmail.com. They also have Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App, said Melanie.

You can also find them on Facebook at @shelby freeclothes, or visit them at www.totallyfreeclothess helby.org, or just go by the store and check it out.

Cleveland County Solid Waste Announces Policy Amendment to Grant Exemptions for Lettered Vehicles and Flatbed Trucks

Following input from residents, Cleveland County Solid Waste has amended its policy to grant exemptions for lettered vehicles and flatbed trucks under certain conditions.

This policy change allows qualifying residents to use these vehicles at County convenience sites for solid waste disposal, subject to the following criteria:

• The vehicle is not used for commercial, industrial, or institutional solid waste disposal.

• The vehicle is not used in the construction industry.

• The vehicle owner has submitted a completed Convenience Site Exemption Application and received approval from the Solid Waste Director.

To obtain an exemption, vehicle owners must submit a completed Convenience Site Exemption Application to the Cleveland County Solid Waste Department. The application must include the following information:

• Owner's name, address, phone number, and email address

• Vehicle description (make, model, year, color)

• Vehicle license plate number

• Driver’s license number

• Reason for exemption

• Agreement that the vehicle will not be used for commercial, industrial, or institutional solid waste disposal, and that all loads will be secured to prevent spillage.

Application Process and Location

Starting Monday, March 17th, residents can submit their applications at the Self McNeilly Landfill Scale House, located at 250 Fielding Road in Cherryville. Applicants are strongly encouraged to bring the vehicle they are applying for and the vehicle’s registration. The application process is free of charge for residents at this time. Please note that exemptions will not be granted for vehicles in the construction industry.

Approval and Verification Process

The exemption approval process may take several weeks, as applications are not instantly approved or issued. The Solid Waste Director or a designated representative will review each application and may conduct additional verification, which may include:

• Inspecting the vehicle to confirm its use and condition.

• Verifying that the vehicle owner has an approved method for disposing of commercial waste, such as a dumpster.

• Conducting a site visit to the owner’s residence or business to confirm the nature of their operations.

The Solid Waste Director will issue written confirmation for granted exemptions, which may be for a specific period of time or subject to revocation for cause.

For more information, please contact the Cleveland County Solid Waste Department at 704-477-8200 or visit www.clevelandcounty.com under Departments: Solid Waste & Landfill.

FTC warns of fraudulent texts demanding toll road payments

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning consumers about a frequent fraud that mysteriously arrives as a legitimatelooking text message on your phone about urgent past-due toll road payments.

Whether you have driven through a toll recently or not, you might have gotten a text saying you owe money for unpaid tolls. It is probably a scam. Scammers pretend to be toll collection agencies from coast to coast and send texts demanding money. Do not be fooled. It is highly likely a scam.

You get a text unexpectedly saying you have unpaid tolls and need to pay them immediately. The misleading text might show a dollar amount for how much you supposedly owe and include a link that takes you to a page to enter your bank or credit card info — but it’s a phishing scam. Not only is the scammer trying to steal your money, but if you click the link, they could get your personal info (like your driver’s license number) and even steal your identity.

A phishing scam is a type of online fraud where scammers attempt to trick you into providing personal and financial information. They often use email or text messages that appear to be from legitimate sources, such as

banks or other trusted organizations. The goal is to steal sensitive information like passwords, account numbers, or Social Security numbers. If scammers obtain this information, they can access your email, bank, or other accounts, or sell your information to other scammers.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has also cautioned residents about fraudulent emails requesting payment for outstanding toll balances.

NC Quick Pass is a legitimate tolling service provided by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. They offer a transponder-based system that provides discounted tolls on North Carolina toll roads and express lanes. It warns, “Scams and bad actors are becoming more prevalent and the attempts to impersonate organizations and individuals is increasingly sophisticated.”

A scam website, identified as https://ncquickpassinvoice.com, imitates NC Quick Pass and poses as an official payment portal for tolls. Avoid it. The website is operated by crooks seeking your data.

NC Quick Pass offers two safe ways to pay tolls: a prepaid account with a transponder and a post-paid program with invoices. The prepaid account allows users to save up to 50% on tolls and provides the fastest and easiest way to pay

tolls. The postpaid program sends invoices by mail and includes potential fees and penalties if the bill is not paid on time.

If you are unsure about an email or text message claiming to be from NC Quick Pass, here are a few ways to verify whether it is legitimate:

• NC Quick Pass will never request payment by text.

• NC Quick Pass will only send texts from a secure short code 696277.

• All links associated with NC Quick Pass will include ncquickpass. com or secure.ncquickpass.com

The FTC provides the following advice to avoid a text scam like this. Do not click on any links or respond to unexpected texts. Scammers want you to react quickly, but it is best to stop and check it out. Check to see if the text is legit. Reach out to the state’s toll collection agency using a phone number or website you know is accurate, not the info from the text. Report and delete unwanted text messages. Use your phone’s “report junk” option to report unwanted texts to your messaging app or forward the suspicious texts to 7726 (SPAM). Delete the text and report the fraudulent message once you have checked it out. Learn more about spotting and avoiding text scams at https://ftc. gov/textscams.

GLAZED HAM

1 9- to-10-pound bone-in fully cooked smoked ham (butt or shank half)

2 tablespoons whole cloves (optional)

1-1/2 cups Glaze

• Remove the ham from the refrigerator and bring to room temperature, about 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Trim off any skin from the ham. Use a sharp paring knife to score through the fat in a diagonal crosshatch pattern without cutting through to the meat. Insert the cloves into the ham (if using), placing them at the intersections of the cuts.

• Put the ham, flat-side down, on a rack in a roasting pan. Pour 1/4 inch water into the bottom of the pan. Transfer to the oven and roast until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham registers 130 degrees F, about 2 hours, 30 minutes (about 15 minutes per pound).

• Increase the oven temperature to 425 degrees. Pour half of the glaze over the ham and brush to coat.

• If the water in the bottom of the pan has evaporated, add more. Return the ham to the oven and roast, basting every 10 minutes with the remaining Glaze, until glossy and well browned, about 45 more minutes.

Pineapple-Apricot Glaze:

Grate the zest of 2 limes; set aside. Squeeze the juice into a saucepan; add 8 thin slices ginger and 2 cups unsweetened pineapple juice. Boil until reduced to 1/2 cup, 8 to 10 minutes. Strain, then add the lime zest, 1 cup apricot preserves and 1/4 cup dijon mustard.

A Messy Past

(Part 3 of “Women’s History Month” Series)

DANYALE PATTERSON

As Women’s History Month unfolds, the spotlight turns to unsung heroines of faith, and few stories resonate as powerfully as that of Rahab, a Canaanite woman whose life defies expectations. Once labeled a prostitute in the fortified city of Jericho, she became the great-greatgrandmother of King David and an ancestor of Jesus Himself! Her story teaches us that when we surrender to God’s will, he can make our future absolutely amazing. This is wonderful news especially for those who receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

A Leap of Faith Rahab’s story starts in Joshua 2. She lived in Jericho, a city about to be conquered by the Israelites.. But when two Israelite spies showed up, Rahab made a choice that changed everything. Joshua 2:9-11 (NIV) captures her bold faith: “I know that the Lord has given you this land…

for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” Despite her past, Rahab recognized God’s power and chose to protect the spies, hiding them from the king’s men. In return, she asked for safety for her family—and the spies agreed. Here’s the beautiful part: Rahab’s faith wasn’t just words. Hebrews 11:31 (NIV) praises her, saying, “By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” Her actions showed surrender to God’s will, trusting Him over her city’s fate. And God honored that faith!

A Legacy of Redemption

Rahab’ story is a neon sign shouting, “Your past doesn’t define you!” Maybe you’ve got chapters in your life you’d rather forget— mistakes, labels, or regrets. Rahab shows us that surrendering to God’s will can rewrite your story. Romans 8:28 (NIV) promises, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” God took Rahab’s messy past and turned it into a legacy of redemption. He can do the same for you! Today, whether you’re a mom, a student, a leader, or just navigating life, let Rahab

inspire you. Surrender your past to God—hand over the shame, the doubts, the “what ifs.” Trust that He’s writing a beautiful future, just like He did for Rahab. Her story proves that no one is too far gone for God’s grace.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, I praise you for your unconditional love, grace and mercy. Thank you for looking beyond my faults and embracing me as your child. I am thankful that no matter what I have done, I can repent of my sins, and you will forgive me. You will embrace me and call me your child. What kind of love is this? It is amazing love. In Jesus’ nameAmen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! Contact her at www.danyale.com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her for speaking engagements.

Watchdog group warns about toxins in protein powder

As more people decide to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle, protein powder sales have increased significantly. This wildly popular dietary supplement continues to see enormous success. Consumers rely on it to lose weight, strengthen their muscles, accelerate post-workout recovery, and enhance their health and well-being overall. This makes finding clean protein more important for consumers.

While protein powder may appear to have promising benefits, not every product is safe to consume. Consumers should pay close attention to the protein powder ingredients listed on the label to ensure that they get the most out of their supplements. Here are some of the main dangers of taking conventional protein powder and how switching to clean protein can improve people’s lives.

Before buying a new protein powder product, consumers should be extremely wary of the toxic ingredients hidden inside

their favorite supplements. However, the most toxic ingredients are never listed on the label. The most common toxins found inside protein powder are heavy metals. These may include arsenic, lead, cadmium, and/ or mercury. Studies have found that prolonged exposure to heavy metals may play a significant role in the development of certain degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis.

Many protein powder products also contain traces of pesticides, mycotoxins, BPA, and residual solvents. Traces of these substances are associated with a higher risk of heart disease, cancer, hypertension, and immune system deficiency. Because even lesser amounts of these toxins can have a detrimental effect on human health, customers must take a closer look at the ingredients in their protein powder before making a purchase.

Customers should be sure

to seek out the right elements in their protein powder. First, the best protein powder should have a healthy protein ratio. Protein powders should contain at least 15-20 grams of protein per serving. Consumers should consult with their doctors first to ensure they get the proper amount of protein from their supplements.

Another crucial factor is amino acids. Many clean protein powders are fortified with amino acids to promote healthy muscles, improve digestion, enhance tissue repair, and increase energy levels.

When looking for healthy protein powder ingredients, avoiding artificial colors, flavors, and added sugars is vital.

Being proactive when shopping for protein powder is essential to staying healthy. Consumers can get the most out of their protein powder supplements by avoiding toxic elements and seeking out only clean ingredients. Finding clean protein also helps customers establish healthy

habits that encourage them to lead cleaner and more wholesome lifestyles.

Label Project encourages brands to become part of the solution to address the growing consumer concern of industrial & environ-

mental contaminants and toxins in food and consumer products. For information, visit https:// cleanlabelproject.org/.

Clean Label Project™, a national non-profit with the mission to bring truth and transparency to food and consumer product labeling, issued the warning. The foundation of food and consumer product safety in America is primarily focused on pathogen and microbiological contaminants. However, there is an increase in consumer, media, and academic attention being paid to the health consequences of exposure to heavy metals, pesticide residues, and plasticizers. Yet, consumers will never find this information on product labels. The Clean Label Project is committed to changing the definition of food and consumer safety through the use of data, science, and transparency. The organization awards brands with products that place an emphasized focus on purity and surpass the minimum regulations required by FDA. The Clean

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

In my home state of Tennessee, turkey season starts on April 12th. For years the opening dates were always the last Saturday in March. But as the number of birds started to decline, the game commission changed the dates. While there were probably several reasons, I think one of the main ones was to let the hens get bred before hunting season. While I hate waiting the two extra weeks, I think the commission’s plan worked. During the last couple of years, I have seen more turkeys than I have in several years prior. That gets me excited for this upcoming season. Another change, however, has been the limit of birds a hunter can harvest. While it used to be as many as four, we are only allowed two now. So, my season is shorter, and my opportunities are fewer. And to add to all of that, hunters are entering the field when the gobblers are acting differently than they were two weeks earlier. It seems everything has changed – except for the target. If you’ve lived long enough, this is nothing new – in every area of life.

One of the things I’m thankful for is that as I have grown older, I have never been the person who has “longed for the good ole days” or who has bemoaned the seemingly moral and ethical decline of the present generation. That’s not to say that some things are not worse now than before, but that it’s just not been something that I have embraced. To me, when I say those things, a whole host of bad things come to mind. I think of things like forgetting that my parents said the same thing about my generation. It also gives me the vibes that I am becoming unwilling to grow and learn, and that I’m becoming a cranky old man. And maybe more than anything, those thoughts give me the feeling that I should just give up on people and on even trying – that I should just mind my own business and become a hermit because this new generation is forever unredeemable. I mean why couldn’t they just leave the turkey season like it was! What do all these things have in common? My constant contentless complaints. What do my constant contentless complaints say about me? That the Spirit of God has not done His real work in my life. Don’t take my word for it. The Apostle Paul explained succinctly what God is trying to bring about in my life. He said, “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Gal 5:22-23 NLT) And what one should notice about these are how none of them can be done while complaining. So, when change comes, thank God that He thought you were the perfect person to be alive at this time, to show not only how to change gracefully, but how to love those whose season is different than yours.

Last month, the N.C. House proposed a bill to designate the Moravian cookie as “the official cookie of the State of North Carolina.”

Sponsored by Representatives Lambeth Paré, Kyle Hall, and Larry Potts, House Bill 124 proposed to adopt Moravian cookies as the state’s standard bearer. The Bill has been referred to the House Rules, Calendar, and Operations Committee.

Language in the Bill states, “Whereas, during the 18th century, settlers from the European kingdom of Moravia traveled to America and founded the town of Salem (now Winston-Salem) in North Carolina in 1766; and Whereas, when the Moravians settled in North Carolina, they brought with them a 6 spice cookie similar to the German Lebkuchen cookie; and Whereas, these thin spice cookies are known as Moravian cookies and made of 8 ingredients such as mo-

lasses, allspice, and ginger; and Whereas, the Moravian cookie is one of the most popular cookies in North Carolina; Whereas, Moravian cookies have been made and sold in Winston-Salem since the 1950s and millions of pounds of cookies are baked, packaged, and distributed worldwide annually; and Whereas, sales of Moravian cookies promote tourism in the State and contribute to the State’s economy; and Whereas, it is fitting to recognize the positive impact the Moravians have had on the State’s culture by adopting the Moravian cookie as the official cookie of the State of North Carolina.”

The Bill is expected to leave a positive “taste” in the mouths of North Carolina citizens, as it will positively impact local businesses, particularly those involved in the production and sale of Moravian cookies. The Bill would help promote tourism in Winston-Salem and the state

of North Carolina, as visitors are drawn to the area to experience the unique cultural heritage associated with the Moravian cookie.

It is believed that the increased recognition and demand for Moravian cookies will lead to higher sales and revenue for local bakeries and businesses that produce and distribute these cookies, contributing to the local economy and creating additional jobs in the region.

Supporters contend that the Bill will foster an increased sense of pride and community among residents, as the Moravian cookie is officially recognized as a symbol of the state’s rich cultural history.

After committee review and endorsement, the Bill is expected to advance through the House and Senate and arrive on the Governor’s desk for his signature unless the legislation “crumbles” before becoming law.

Take A Look At Some Of The Neal Center’s New Look...

Some new appearances are taking place at the Neal Center! Several of the activity rooms have received an updated look to better appeal to the participants of the center. Here’s what’s been done thus far:

These two photos show the new layout for the center’s Recreation Room. The floors were professionally cleaned and polished. A set of tables and chairs have been added for a permanent meeting place. A sofa, along with plants and other décor, adds a warm and cozy look and feel to the room.

The Recreation Room is a combination meeting room and exercise room. Activities such as: “Ladies Support” and “Veteran’s Coffee & Chat” meet in this room. Some of the older fixtures in the room were removed to give it a more “open” and “spacious” appearance. The changes have been very well received.

The exercise area still contains the pool tables and exercise equipment. A new treadmill was just added, which now makes it three treadmills available for use. This area will also be used for Corn Hole and the Table Tennis equipment will soon be reinstalled.

The exercise equipment has been reorgnized to provide improved space for participants. In turn, we hope this will encourage more participants to want to take an active part in a regular exercise routine.

..AND MORE CHANGES ARE STILL TO COME!

Additional changes are on the horizon as the Neal Senior Center upgrades to accommodate the needs of our participants. As the changes take place, there may be times where a specific room or area will be temporarily closed while the refurbishing is done. Signs will be posted in those areas as the changes happen. Your patience and understanding during this transition is much appreciated as we strive to improve our facility to serve our patrons

• Parental Control: Social media platforms must implement measures to verify parental consent for minors aged 14 and 15.

• Content Restrictions: Platforms must restrict access to certain content deemed harmful to minors.

• Data Protection: Enhanced data privacy measures for minors, including restrictions on data collection and targeted advertising.

• Enforcement: The Bill includes penalties for social media companies that fail to comply with these regulations.

The Bill's sponsors believe that social media-free kids will have better social and mental health and improved academic lives.

Joseph Blackholm, from the N.C. Values Coalition stated, "These algorithms are harming attention spans for children. They are losing the ability to focus; they are losing the ability to do deep work because their brains are literally being rewired."

The Bill, filed on March 5, would ban anyone under 14 from having any social media account and force platforms to permanently delete existing accounts.

Representative Jackson mentioned that platforms generally comply with laws like this and have followed similar laws in other states. "Platforms are good about abiding by the law," he said.

For teenagers aged 14 and 15, the Bill would require parental consent to have a social media account. Representative Zenger noted the strong support from parents, say-

ing, "Parents are just bombarded with things they have to watch out for and navigate with their kids, and so what you hear from parents is this is such a hard battle." Representative Jackson added, "Kids under 14 would be so much better off if they were out in the woods hunting rabbits and, on the ballfield, playing softball and baseball, and in the creek catching salamanders than playing on their phones on social media."

North Carolina House Bill 301 shares similarities with social media regulations in other states, but there are some unique aspects. For example, Utah requires age verifi cation and parental consent for minors under 18 and imposes a "social media curfew" between 10:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Connecticut requires parental consent for users under 16. Arkansas mandates age verification and parental consent for social media use. Maryland bans personalized content for users under 16. California requires websites likely to be used by minors to estimate visitors' ages and provide privacy control. Louisiana clarifies liability for failure to perform age verification.

Overall, North Carolina's HB 301 aligns with the broader trend of increasing parental control and protection for minors on social media. Still, each state has its own specific measures and enforcement strategies.

House Bill 301 was referred to another committee on March 6.

POP LOCK DROP

Prevent your children, friends and relatives from misusing your medicine by securing medicine in places they cannot access, and disposing of medicines you no longer need or use.

Make sure you close medicine until you hear the childproof “pop!”

Secure medicine in a lock box. Pick up a free lockbox at the Cleveland County Health Department Front Desk. We are open Monday - Friday 8am-5pm at 200 South Post Road, Shelby.

There are many medicine drop box locations throughout Cleveland County where you can dispose of your unused or expired medicine . To find one near you, visit bit.ly/ccmeddrop.
