KM Life Enrichment Center gets a boost from Eagle Scout Wade Hendrick

Eagle Scout projects are a diverse thing. Most of them involve outdoors endeavors such as building benches in parks, ramps to the doors of folks with mobility issues, landscaping at churches and public buildings, that sort of thing.

Then we have the work of 15-year-old Eagle Scout Wade Hendrick of Troop 92 in Kings Mountain. When Hendrick, a 10th grade student at Kings Mountain High and the son of Kelly and Leslie Hendrick, began mulling what he could do for his Eagle project he decided to take a different track by going the indoor route and constructing storage units as well as a nice food prep table for the Kings Mountain Life Enrichment Center.

“I was looking for a project maybe at the library or a school, and Allan Propst who is a pharmacist at Mountain St. Pharmacy suggested the Life Enrichment Center,” Wade said. “He has been a proponent of the Center for years.”

Taking the cue, Wade met with Center coordinator Tina Mauney and executive director Toni Camp who explained the need for dressing room shelving and a food prepara-

tion table.

“I began making the pieces with the help of my grandfather Don Phifer who used to be a cabinetmaker,” Wade said. “I also had help from my uncle Trent Hagans. It took five weeks from start to finish.”

Wade’s Scouting colleagues Aidan Hawkins and Elijah Propst also lent a hand. Funds for the project materials came from individual donations and discounts from Cleveland

nets and the table is amazing. The pieces are done in a birchlike finish in a Scandinavian style that’s light in color and elegant in simplicity. The cabinets have sixteen compartments, and the table is sturdy and spacious.

Mauney praised the project.

“It will be very beneficial to the staff and our participants,” she said. “It makes the staff jobs easier and reduces the struggle to organize supplies. Before, the supplies were just piled in a storage room.”

Donna Tesner, community liaison coordinator for the Center, gave a nod to Hendrick and the local Scout program.

“We have had a great relationship with the Scouts,” she said. “It’s a good thing to have the younger generation see what we do at the Center.”

Wade’s dad cast his vote of approval for the project.

“I give it two thumbs up,” he said enthusiastically.

Troop 92 Scoutmaster John Kaiser had this to say about Wade and the project.

“An Eagle Scout project should do three things. First, it should require the Scout to

organize and lead the project. Second, it should serve the community. Third, it should leave a lasting legacy. Wade Hendrick’s project accomplishes all three of these. The project will have a direct positive impact on the lives of the residents of the Life Enrichment Center. Wade is an exemplary Scout, student, and member of the Kings Mountain community. He represents the best of our youth and scouting.”

“The project gave me a sense

of pride,” he said. “I feel like people will enjoy what we accomplished.”

More about the Kings Mountain Life Enrichment Center

LEC began as a ministry in 1980 housed in donated church space with only two participants. LEC has grown to two stateof-the-art facilities, with a combined average daily attendance over 125, with plans to expand the Kings Mountain Center, which is full with a waiting list. Keeping families together at home has always been the goal at LEC, established to provide adult day care and health services for adults who cannot stay safely at home by themselves. An amazing staff, including nurses, that are hired as much for their caring nature as they are for their credentials, provide whatever care is necessary for adults with mental retardation, physical impairments, psychiat-

ric illnesses, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke-related disabilities and other illnesses. Because of the level of health care provided, no one is ever too ill or too frail to attend LEC.

The beauty of adult day care is that, at the end of the day, participants return home to their families.

Partners in Caregiving: The Adult Day Services Program, A National Program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, at Wake Forest University School of Medicine recognized LEC as a National Model Adult Day Center.

In 2005, LEC received the NC Center for Nonprofits’ highest award, the NonProfit Stewardship Award, for exemplary stewardship of resources entrusted to an organization. Additionally, LEC received recognition for steadfast focus on mission, successful board development, and effective marketing integrated into mission expansion. Do Some Good, reflections of a Christian Journey is about everyday life; it is applied theology says Dr. Brian Johnson, pastor of Double Shoals Baptist Church. He has been a pastor for thirty-five years, twenty- four of which have been at Double Shoals. Each week a newsletter is sent to the membership, and other interested individuals, which includes a short article written by Dr. Johnson. His book, Do Some Good, is a collection of some of those articles, including memories of his family members and homelife in Eastern Tennessee and everyday life in the local church community with the purpose of helping people connect with God and learn to love themselves. Dr. Johnson, or Dr. Brian to his congregation, didn’t enjoy writing in his childhood but got excited about the process in high school when the assignment was to write a Science Fiction paper. As an adult, he sees the process of writing as a way to bring an idea to life and let others know that they matter. “Most articles start as a memory that has been filtered through my lifetime. I can remember even the smells of cookies and Kool Aid that were served in Vacation Bible School when I was a child. It’s like there are movies in my head.” “My sermons, which are all scripturally based, are heard in a short timeframe but in my writing, I use many sources; the written words survive and can be reread if something is important to the reader .”

Even though he was encouraged by former professors in Divinity School it was his wife, Susan, who decided to collect the articles into book form. The book can be ordered at www. bookbaby.com and will be available on Amazon.com on May 1. The book will also be available at a book signing on April 6, in the Family Life Center at Double Shoals Baptist Church from 2:00-3:30 pm to which the public is invited.

With his wife Susan and daughter, Samantha Hope, the Johnsons live in Belwood. His son, Zachary and his family, live out of state. Hope published her first book, Yesterday, I Was Fine about a year ago.

Dr. Brian speaks to all ages through his writing. He started, and very much enjoyed, his ministry working with youth. He has grown to really appreciate the stories shared with him from the senior adults to whom he ministers. When asked what he hopes people receive from reading this collection of short articles Dr. Brian responded, “I want people to know that they matter to God. I can’t think of anything much worse than believing you are worthless. God is listening.”

How to appeal your county property tax appraisal

Cleveland County sent out property tax revaluations in February. By state law, Cleveland County must perform a reappraisal of all real property to ensure fair and accurate property values. The reappraisal must occur at least once every eight years, and it is currently on a fouryear cycle.

This will show your property’s updated value based on the county’s January 1 revaluation. You can appeal if you feel the value doesn’t reflect your property’s true market value. You can submit an appeal online, by mail, or by email.

To appeal online, use the Online Appeal Form. Complete only one form per parcel, as multiple submissions will slow the appeal process. March 31 is the final day to submit an appeal.

If you would like to send an appeal by mail or email, make a photocopy of your appeal form and keep your original notice for your records. You can mail the copy to Cleveland County Tax Assessor at P.O Box 370, Shelby, NC, 28151, or email tax.assessor@ clevelandcountync.gov.

• Your 2025 Assessed Value may be appealed if the following apply:

1. The Assessed Value substantially exceeds the Market Value of your property

2. Your property has been appraised inequitably as it relates to the market value of comparable properties

• Appeals cannot be considered for the following reasons:

1. The percentage of increase/decrease from the previous Assessed Value

2. The Market Value is more than the Insurance Value

3. The Market Value is just too high

4. The owner does not have the financial ability to pay the taxes

• Appeals will not be taken over the phone. If you wish to appeal in person, please complete the Request Form and call 704-484-4911 to schedule an appointment. Appeals allow the county to make necessary adjustments and ensure that the value assigned to your property is as accurate as possible. Our team is here to answer your questions, help you understand how your property value was determined, and review any information you provide.

Allow at least eight (8) weeks from the date the county receives your appeal for any decision to be mailed to you. An appeal/review may result in the Assessed Value being: (1) unchanged, (2) reduced, or (3) increased in value.

If you disagree with the results of your value review or informal appeal, you can appeal to the Board of Equalization and Review. You may appeal to the Board at any time before the adjournment

date. The adjournment date will be published in the local newspaper and on the county’s website. Your right to appeal to the Board is protected during the time information provided concerning your appeal is being reviewed. All requests must be made in writing.

North Carolina and Cleveland County offer several relief programs for residents and businesses. Qualifying residents might include senior citizens on a fixed income, a disabled resident unable to work, or a veteran living in a home adapted for their needs. The application period is now open so the relief will apply to

a resident’s 2025 tax bill. Most applications must be submitted to the Cleveland County Tax Assessor’s Office by June 1. Tax rates will be determined by County, City, and Town elected boards in the spring of 2025, with property tax bills calculated and mailed in July. The exemptions include:

Homestead Exclusions

• Exclusion for Disabled Veterans allows qualifying property owners, including the unmarried surviving spouse of an honorably discharged disabled veteran, a portion of the appraised value of their residence excluded from taxation.

• Exclusion for Elderly or Disabled allows qualifying property owners an exclusion. For married applicants, residing with their spouse, the income of both spouses must be included.

Tax Deferrals

• Elderly or Disabled “Circuit Breaker” property tax deferral allows qualifying property owners to defer a portion of the tax on their home. Application for this deferral must be filed with the Tax Assessor by June 1.

• Present Use tax deferral allows a reduction in the assessed value of properties meeting specific requirements. The county will calculate property tax by applying the current tax rate to the use-value rather than the market value. This is not an exemption, but rather a deferral. A deferred tax is carried forward in the taxing records and a portion (present year plus three) of that would be due with interest should the property lose its eligibility.\ Present use tax deferrals generally include agriculture, horticulture, and forestry classifications, with specific requirements that apply.

Learn more and apply for these relief programs by visiting the Cleveland County Tax Administrator website.

Hit Pause

(4th & Final Part of “Women’s History Month” Series)

The Better Choice

In a bustling village just outside Jerusalem, Mary of Bethany shines as a truly inspiring figure among biblical women this Women’s History Month. Her story is a warm reminder for all busy women today, highlighting the challenge of prioritizing faith amidst our packed schedules. Mary’s dedication to spending time with Jesus serves as a motivating example for those trying to juggle their many responsibilities while also nurturing their faith. Mary is following Psalm 105:4 (AMP) which says, “Seek and deeply long for the LORD and His strength [His power, His might]; Seek and deeply long for His face and His presence continually.”

We first meet Mary in Luke 10:38-42 (NIV). Jesus visits her home, and while her sister Martha is “distracted by all the preparations,” Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, soaking in His words. Martha’s frustrated—understandably!— and asks Jesus to tell Mary to help. But Jesus says, “Martha, Martha… you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42 (NIV). Wow. Mary chose Jesus over the to-do list, and He called it the better choice.

Prioritize Jesus

We’re all juggling a million things—work, family, errands, you name it. It’s easy to let our time with Jesus slip to the bottom of the list. But Mary reminds us to hit pause and prioritize Him. Psalm 46:10 (NIV) says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” That stillness—sitting with Jesus like Mary did—recharges us in a way no coffee can. Today, whether you’re racing through deadlines or chasing kids, take a Mary moment. Maybe it’s five minutes with your Bible, a prayer in the car, or just whisper-

ing, “Jesus, I need You.” Prioritizing Him isn’t about doing less; it’s about doing everything from a place of peace. Mary shows us that when we put Jesus first, He meets us right where we are.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, this is the day that you have made. I am rejoicing and glad about it. I am happy, because I get to spend time with you. Forgive me for when I didn’t take time to seek your face, but was distracted by so many other things. It is amazing how when I put you first, everything else seems to flow better and if f things are challenging, I still have peace, because I have been with the Prince of Peace. Please remind me to always seek you. In Jesus’ name - Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD: I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

US Secret Service honors

CCSO investigator

The U.S. Secret Service recently recognized and awarded Investigator Chrissy Weaver from Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office as a top 100 digital forensics examiner in the United States.

“Chrissy was ranked #39 out of more than 3,800 participating examiners!! The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office is grateful to employ talented individuals like Investigator Weaver to serve and protect our citizens daily,” Sheriff Norman said.

Chrissy is pictured with K-9 officer Coca, a 1-year-old English Springer Spaniel who perfectly matches her handler, Digital Forensic Investigator Chrissy Weaver. Being one of four in the state, K9 Coca not only enhances our agency’s capabilities but also represents a step forward in our efforts to keep our community safe! Coca enjoys chasing her toys and assisting deputies in locating hidden electronic devices that may contain incriminating evidence against a perpetrator/violator.

South Mountains State Park in Burke County partially reopened March 17. The park has been closed since last fall due to widespread damage after Hurricane Helene.

Clear Creek Access in Morganton reopened March 17 for day use. Visitors will be able to utilize both Clear Creek and Lake View trails for hiking and horseback riding. Picnic facilities and fishing will be available at the lake.

The park’s main access is slated to partially reopen in April.

Visitors should pay close attention to onsite signage and not attempt to access areas that remain closed off. Facilities that remain closed continue to have major safety hazards. Park staff are working diligently to clear debris and conduct repairs to reopen the remaining closed areas as soon as possible.

“We are excited to reopen South Mountains after the extended closure due to hurricane damage,” said State Parks Director Brian Strong. “I’m especially proud of our staff who have been working incredibly hard to reopen the park as quickly as possible, recognizing that our visitors are eager to enjoy the beautifully rugged backcountry again. We appreciate the patience from the public and the help given to us by agency partners to clear debris and address the many safety hazards that resulted from the damage.”

This is the first time the park will reopen under the leadership of Park Superintendent Lance Huss, who started in his role in December. A native of Burke County, Huss attended Montreat College and obtained a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies. He first joined the division as a general utility worker, working for five summer seasons at South Mountains, before obtaining his first job as a wildlife enforcement officer with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. In 2006, he returned to South Mountains as a park ranger. He most recently worked at NCWRC again as a wildlife enforcement officer in Burke and Catawba counties.

As a park ranger, Huss served as the division’s lead instructor in subject control and arrest techniques. He also currently holds a number of law enforcement instructor certifications and is also certified as an emergency medical technician.

“Lance has not only taken on the role of Superintendent of our largest park, but he has also done it at a critical time when leadership is essential to ensuring the recovery of our parks,” said Strong. “Lance and all our staff in western North Carolina have distinguished themselves as we continue to work to reopen all of our parks for our visitors to enjoy.”

A key factor in the academy’s success is its experienced instructors, who are veteran lineworkers with decades of hands-on industry experience. The curriculum focuses on technical training, safety protocols, and real-world applications, preparing students for the demanding and rewarding career of a lineworker. The academy’s affordability and high-quality instruction have drawn students from across

the country and even internationally.

The academy’s accomplishments are bolstered by strong community and industry partnerships, including Duke Energy, Utility Lines Construction Services, City of Shelby, City of Kings Mountain, and City of Gastonia. These organizations provide invaluable support, ensuring students have access to high-quality training and career opportunities.

Sensory Friendly Day is Coming to the N.C. Transportation Museum on April 6!

The N.C. Transportation Museum will have special morning hours on Sunday, April 6, to welcome guests for a Sensory Friendly Day. Specialized programming will be available from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., and will be designed to help visitors with sensory issues enjoy the museum and its exhibits.

Trained museum educators and volunteers will be available around the museum with specially designed interactive activities to create a meaningful experience at a variety of exhibits. The museum will provide social narratives and maps for guests upon arrival. To help guests prepare for the day, those materials are also available for download in advance at www.nctransportationmuseum.org/sensory-friendly-day/. Visual supporting materials, such as schedules and sensory-friendly maps, will be available to help guide individuals through their preferred routes. There will be quiet/calm down spaces identified throughout the museum and highlighted on a detailed event map.

Spring planting pointers

Many people view spring as a season of rejuvenation. That renewal may be somewhat metaphorical for human beings, but it’s literal for lawns and gar-

dens that begin to grow anew as temperatures rise and hours of daylight increase in spring. Each spring presents an opportunity for homeowners to get

back outside and tend to their gardens. As the temperatures rise, homeowners can consider these spring planning pointers to ensure their landscapes look lush and full in the months ahead.

• Start with the soil. Soil can serve as the starting point each spring. Winter can take its toll on a garden and even overwhelm the area with debris over the colder months. Clear rocks and other debris from the area before loosening the soil. The Farmer’s Almanac recommends loosening soil to a depth of at least eight inches if planting a new garden. An existing garden may only need to be loosened to a depth of around six inches, after which homeowners can mix compost into the soil in early spring. Compost is organic matter that provides nutrients and helps to build strong plant roots.

• Consider a raised garden in colder climates. The Farmer’s Almanac notes raised gardens See SPRING, Page 21

Fun and engaging activities will be provided for individuals of all ages with Autism Spectrum Disorder, filled with opportunities to learn, interact, and enjoy exhibits that the museum has to offer. The museum is open exclusively for those with sensory challenges and their families from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m., and opens fully to the public from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. Activities related to the event end at 1 p.m., but guests are welcome to stay longer during the regular public hours.

Train rides will be available for Sensory Friendly Day guests at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and will provide a 25-minute ride around the museum property when the train is less crowded. Participants can also take rides aboard restored motor cars, which are railroad maintenance vehicles operated by the Red Springs & Northern Foundation. The regular N.C. Transportation Museum exhibits will be available including model trains and more.

“Our Sensory Friendly Day opens the museum to an audience that is more comfortable in smaller groups, with less noise and more structured programming than on a larger event day when the sights, sounds, and crowds can become overwhelming. We are happy to offer this inclusive programming to our guests who are often fascinated by trains, planes, automobiles, and trucks,” said Kelly Alexander, Executive Director.

Each ticket includes entrance to the museum and access to all museum exhibits on the 60-acre site. Ticket prices for admission only are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors or military, and $4 for children 3-12 years old. Children

under 3 are free. Ticket prices for admission and one train ride are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors or military, and $12 for children 3-12 years old. Children under 3 are free. Tax and ticket fees apply. The event is sponsored by CompleatKidz and Novant Health. For more information about the event, a complete schedule of events and activities, and to purchase tickets, go to www.nctransportationmuseum.org/sensory-friendly-day/or call the N.C. Transportation Museum at 704636-2889.

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

can help homeowners in colder climates dry out and warm up wet, cold soils more quickly.

Homeowners in such regions also can cover their beds with black plastic or cardboard prior to planting. Doing so can protect the beds from late-season snow and spring rains and also helps to overcome erosion.

• Take soil temperatures. Unpredictable weather is among the noticeable effects of climate change in recent years. That lack of predictability can make spring planting a little more tricky than it once was.

• Work with a garden center to identify what to plant. The right plants for one region may not be ideal for another, so homeowners are urged to work with a local landscaper or garden center before planting. Such a consultation can be especially useful for homeowners planting a new garden. Landscapers and garden center professionals will know which plants work in the local climate.

etables in the spring. Various garden experts note that spring is an ideal time to plant a vegetable garden. If planted at the right time, a vegetable garden can save homeowners money on their grocery bills and provide a season’s worth of fresh veggies. Lettuce and spinach are sun- and shadefriendly vegetables, which can make them good options for a spring garden. Cool-season root vegetables, which include

beets, carrots and swiss chard, are some other notable veggies that can thrive in early spring.

Spring is a season of rejuvenation for gardens. That’s even more true when homeowners consider some conventional planting wisdom in early spring.

I don’t remember being so aggravated as I was the other day. There I was sitting with a friend, sulking about a lost opportunity to pull the trigger on a tom turkey. The night before we had seen a gobbler and a hen move into a certain part of the woods. We surmised they would certainly roost there, so our plans were to be their wake-up call the next morning. The next day we were in place as the sun began to rise. The woods all around us was being filled with a chorus of gobbles. None of them, however, were coming from this particular bird that we were set up on. We stayed and waited. We continued to wait as we called softly to let him know we were around. Still no response. The other gobblers wanted us to come to them but we remained steadfast until we determined that somehow this bird had eluded us. Our plan now was to try to get on one of the other gobblers that had been calling but we had waited too long. They had already found other hens. So there we were, empty-handed, frustrated, and sulking in the price of a bad decision. While sitting on the side of that hill I pondered on some lesson from what had just happened. It seemed that very quickly my mind went to this subject of decisions. You see every decision has at least two components; sacrifice and risk. Some decisions – the easiest ones, come with very little sacrifice and very little risk. These are the ones that most of us make every day. They keep us in our comfort zone and that is really where we all like to live. I ask myself as I thought about what had just transpired that morning if my decision to stay put was based on my unwillingness to sacrifice to climb a difficult hill or if it was based on the fear that I would run into the bird that I was trying to get close to. Was I afraid of that risk? I’m not sure but I was reminded of this; the greatest successes and results will always come from the greatest sacrifices and risks. In investments, the greatest return on one’s money also comes with the greatest possibility of losing one’s money. So as you can imagine, most people prefer to remain in the safe confines of the local FDIC insured bank. In turkey hunting, most people chose to stay on level ground instead of climbing a difficult hill. They prefer to stay several hundred yards from a gobbler’s roost instead of moving close and risking being seen. The truth is, the one closest is more likely to garner the kill.

My friend, remember that while most of your decisions in life will take very little sacrifice and risk, if you are truly going to enjoy the most thrilling victories, you will have to put something on the line. Your risk may not always pay off but at least you won’t be sitting on the side of a hill somewhere wondering what might have been if you had only moved.
