A Surrendered Yes

(Part 1 of “Women’s History Month” Series)

Welcome to March—National Women’s History Month! I’m so excited to spend this month with you shining a light on some incredible women from the Bible who inspire us to live boldly for God. These ladies aren’t just names on a page; they’re real women whose stories echo into our lives today.

Proverbs 31:10 (AMP) says, “An excellent woman [one who is spiritual, capable, intelligent, and virtuous], who is he who can find her? Her value is more precious than jewels and her worth is far above rubies or pearls.” Who better to kick things off with than Mary, the Mother of Jesus? Her humble “yes” to God’s wild plan shows us the power of trust and submission to a higher calling.

said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.’” Can you imagine? Most of us would’ve asked a million questions. But Mary only asked one question in her moment of wonder. Luke 1:34 (NIV) “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin? Then Luke 1:38 (NLT) tells us her answer, “Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.” That’s it. A simple, surrendered yes. Brave not Blind

you—something big, scary, or just plain confusing. Mary reminds us we don’t need all the answers to say yes. We just need trust.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

Mary’s Call Mary’s just a young woman, probably going about her day, when an angel—Gabriel, no less—shows up with life-altering news. Luke 1:3031 (NIV) says, “But the angel

Mary’s obedience wasn’t blind; it was brave. She trusted God’s promise even when the road ahead looked uncertain— think about the whispers, the judgment, the unknown of raising the Messiah! Yet her faith shines in her song in Luke 1:46-47. “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” She didn’t just accept God’s call; she celebrated it. That’s the heart of an obedient servant—someone who says yes and then leans into God’s strength to carry it out. Maybe God’s whispering a calling to

“Holy God, I praise you as my King. I will sing of your power; yes, I will sing aloud of your mercy. Forgive me when I said no to your request, or when I was slow in surrendering to your will. Thanks for being patient with me. Help me to focus on you and to not be afraid to answer the call even when it seems impossible. You are a miracle working God. In Jesus’ name - Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD: I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! Contact her at www.danyale. com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her for speaking engagements.

Tricks to trim your utility bill

A rapid rise in the cost of living will undoubtedly prove to be one of the major stories of 2022. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, energy prices rose by 41.6 percent in the 12-month period that ended in June 2022, marking the highest 12-month increase since April 1980.

The significant spike in energy costs is somewhat misleading, as the BLS considers motor fuel prices, which rose more than 60 percent in the 12-month period ending in June 2022, part of the energy category. However, during that same period, electricity prices rose by nearly 14 percent while natural gas prices increased by 38 percent. Both of those increases were more significant than the more publicized rise in food prices, which rose by right around 10 percent.

Families need to eat and many professionals now must return to in-person work after years of pandemic-related remote working, which means they must confront higher fuel costs. There are ways for families to reduce home energy costs without adversely af-

fecting their quality of life.

• Run appliances during off-peak hours. According to the United States Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the best time to use appliances in a home is when overall electricity use is low. Though this time changes depending on the season and can vary based on geography, the DOE and the EPA both note that after 9 p.m. and before 9 a.m. are generally the offpeak hours in most areas.

• Strategically use your shades and blinds. The energy providers at ConEd estimate that about 40 percent of unwanted heat comes through windows. Strategic use of curtains, shades and blinds can keep heat out on hot days, thus allowing homeowners to turn the thermostat up on their air conditioning units in summer. Opening curtains, blinds and shades on winter mornings and afternoons will allow more sunlight in, allowing homeowners to control heating costs more effectively.

• Reorganize your refrigerator. There are plenty of contradictory strategies regarding how best to

store foods in a refrigerator so the unit consumes as little energy as possible while still keeping foods fresh and chilled. But various energy providers, including ConEd, recommend that consumers avoid packing a fridge too tightly. By allowing cold air to circulate within the refrigerator, the refrigerator won’t need to work as hard, and thus consume as much energy, to keep foods cool. It’s important to note that the opposite should govern how the freezer is packed. Packing frozen items tightly in the freezer will help the refrigerator work a little less hard.

• Turn off the lights. Estimates from the U.S. Energy Information Administration indicate that electricity for lighting accounts for around 10 percent of electricity consumption in homes. A concerted effort to turn off lights in rooms that aren’t being used can help consumers save money.

Rising utility bills are compelling millions of people to seek ways to trim their energy consumption. Thankfully, there are many ways to do that without upsetting daily routines.

I remember the last time I came back from a river-fishing trip with a friend. It was a beautiful morning to be on the water. The early morning, during the summer, is usually the best because the heat really picks up about mid-morning. That day was no different. By 10:30, our hopes were fried, along with our back and neck. But even before that, the action was minimal at best. We caught a few small ones, but never really got into the smallmouth population we had hoped for. The last few times we had gone, we left with the same results. We had fun. We loved the comradery. The outdoors was beautiful. But the fishing was disappointing. After three times on the same float, discouraging. The thoughts of doing it again? Depressing. And that is the way it works in other parts of our lives as well. More important parts.

All of us get disappointed. To be disappointed means that an appointment has been missed or lost. This simply means that some things we expected to happen, didn’t. As long as we have any expectations whatsoever, we all will have disappointments. Being disappointed continually can lead to a deeper problem. Discouragement. It is the loss of courage. It’s saying, since I have been disappointed so much, I am no longer confident in anything good happening. I have lost the courage to continue down the same path I’ve been going. If one remains without courage long enough, he becomes depressed. Depression is when life has seemingly been squeezed out. Life has been pressed from us. Many of us know what each of these feels like. Some linger longer in discouragement and depression. Some suffer in ways that the rest of us cannot imagine. That’s why it is so important for us to encourage one another. Because, while disappointments are universal and even come from strong faith, discouragement comes from its lack. That’s why throughout the scriptures; we are continually told to “be of good courage.” And that is also why we are to be people of “Encouragement.” The “en” means to cause. It simply means we are to cause courage in other people. The temptation to lose courage can come from a lot of things, but it always starts with fear of the unknown. It can be the unknown about a job, a sickness, a death, or the next move. This is the predicament of everyone around us. And while I may not have the answer they need, I can choose to cause courage to come into their lives by my words and actions. When you think of the favorite people of your past – the teachers, friends, family members, neighbors; they are your favorite because they believed you could do anything. They instilled courage. They didn’t ignore your problems or difficulties, they just believed the greatest partnership known to man was you and God.
