96-year old Bill Spangler has passed his sports excellence genes on down the line
By Alan Hodge
Throughout history some families have been able to pass down particular talents to succeeding generations. Examples of this phenomenon are the Bach and Strauss clans in classical music and the Earnhardt and Petty folks in motorsports. Add to that list 96-year-old Bill Spangler of Shelby and his natural talent in sports that he has passed down to his great grandchildren Ella Jane and Grant Osada like an Olympic torchbearer handing off the flaming torch.
First a bit about Bill. Spangler grew up in a time when Cleveland County was an agricultural powerhouse and simple pleasures were the norm.
“I was born on September 9, 1928, and raised on a farm on Kings Rd. in Shelby,” he said. “We raised cotton and corn. I plowed the fields with an old mule. I didn’t wear shoes and some days my feet hurt so bad from the rocks that I had to soak them in a bucket of kerosene. We would take the corn to the mill in Belwood where it would be made into cornmeal for cornbread.”
School for Spangler started at the elementary on Marion St. He went to junior high then high school at Township #3 School in Earl.
His working life began at the Auto In garage near the Banker’s House on N. Lafayette St. He also toiled at Hudson Hosiery and Celanese (retired in 1987) and even ran a concrete contracting company until 2005.
Bill and his wife Janie Sue were married for 70 years. She passed away on August 11, 2020.
“We met in a cotton patch,” Spangler says. “She was sixteen years old. We had some good years together.”
They had four kids- Mark and his wife Sandy live in Ohio, Barbara (Charlie deceased) lives in Shelby, Susan and WeeDee live in Waco, Tommy passed away in 2014.
It was during his teen school years that Spangler came to love athletics.
Hurdles and pole vaulting were his track and field specialties,
“I practiced pole vaulting with a big bamboo cane from the river,” he said. “We landed on the hard ground. We made our hurdles in shop class out of wood.”
Basketball was another Spangler
specialty favorite. He was a valuable member of the Hudson Hosiery basketball team and was the high scorer in many games. Spangler shared an interesting basketball story from #3 School where the gym was an uninsulated tin building.
“It had a pot-bellied stove for
heat, but it was still mighty cold,” he said. “One game I recall was the time we traveled to Valdese and played against a team from the NC School for the Deaf,” he said. “They talked to each other on the court with sign language.”

Baseball was also one of Spangler’s talents. He pitched and played first base and still has the vintage glove he wore as a player.
“That glove caught many a ball,” he said.
Sports equipment was hard to come by in the Depression days.
“We would go to the golf course and get golf balls,” he said. “We made our baseballs by wrapping the golf balls with string and tape. They were really hard. We played on diamonds we made on the farm fields.”
Spangler’s sports genes lay dormant for a generation or two but burst forth again in his great grandchildren Ella Jane and Grant Osada both of whom share a love of athletics with an even deeper love of “Pa”. Spangler also has eight grandchildren and six other great grandchildren. They each have talents, and he loves them all, but Ella Jane and Grant are the two that inherited his love and execution of sports.
Ella Jane graduated from a high school in Asheville earlier this year and is now enrolled at UNC-Wilmington where she’s on the track team. Grant is a ninth-grader at an Asheville school and on the baseball team.
Ella Jane made headlines as an All-American Athlete in the 400m for three years in high school. She has won a multitude of awards, including meet MVP, and has set many records for her high school in the 100m, 200m, and 400m outdoor sprint events. Ella Jane has this to say about Bill and their sports legacy.
“My great-grandfather, Pa Spangler, has been an incredible source of inspiration throughout my life,” she said. “His stories, especially those from his childhood, have always fascinated me, particularly when he reminisces about his athletic experiences. Pa often shares captivating
tales about his youth, where sports were at the center of his world. He would laugh as he described games and funny things his friends would do. Pa’s stories are about the friendships formed, the lessons learned, and the joy that came from playing for the love of the game. He frequently throws in a joke or two. Listening to him talk about his athletic-filled childhood baseball or basketball has taught me about commitment as well as teamwork. But more than that, it made me realize how essential it is to find joy in whatever you choose to do. Pa’s stories continue to inspire me, not just because of his athletic achievements, but because of how he remembers these moments with the people who he was surrounded by.”
Grant inherited Bill’s baseball skills.
He is in the ninth grade and has been playing baseball since he was four-yearsold. He has participated in at least three championship team wins and awarded dozens of game balls, as a short stop, pitcher, and outfielder, while his specialty is stolen bases. His speed and agility earned him a spot to play high school JV even while an eighth grader. “Pa” encourages him to stay fast and sharp by continuing to add to his skill sets, including different types of pitching throws that Pa used when he was in at No 3 School, like knuckle balls and fast balls.
“He taught me how to throw a knuckleball,” says Grant.
Spangler encourages Ella Jane and Grant at every opportunity and is continually asking to see the latest pictures and stats and schedules. The conversations typically start the memories flowing of games he played remembering names, places, and particular plays as he smiles and recounts the events and victories.
Spangler looked back at his sports days and ahead to Ella Jane and Grant’s expertise with satisfaction and a sense of pride in the family talents.
“They are both very good and I enjoy watching them,” he said. “It’s all about their attitudes and love of the games.”

Inspiring ideas for last-minute holiday shoppers
It’s unlikely that anyone aspires to be a last-minute holiday shopper. Putting off holiday shopping until the last minute can make for a stressful home stretch to the season, and there’s no guarantee store shelves won’t already be picked clean or that gifts purchased online will arrive on time.
Despite how unappealing last-minute shopping can be, it’s still a fact of life for millions of holiday shoppers. As the clock winds down this holiday season, shoppers can look to these ideas for inspiration.
• Gift cards: Gift cards may never earn a distinction as the most sentimental item to give a loved one during the holiday season, but they are surprisingly sought-after. In fact, a survey from the National Retail Federation found that 54 percent of participants identified gift cards as the most-wanted gift of the 2022 holiday season. Chain retailers, small businesses and restaurants are among the many establishments that sell gift cards, so shoppers are bound to find a card to please anyone on their shopping list.
• Food/beverage: The holiday season is a popular time to indulge in some
great food and wash it down with a favorite wine or another adult beverage. That makes food and beverages a great holiday gift. Shoppers can take a loved one out to a favorite restaurant, prepare a homemade treat or purchase a favorite dish from a local specialty grocery store or eatery. Pair the food with an appropriate beverage and this accessible last-minute gift idea is sure to be a hit.
• Tickets: Tickets to a movie, sporting event, live theater performance, or concert are another gift idea that likely won’t be gobbled up by early bird shoppers. People of all ages enjoy experiences, and a 2022 survey from the travel booking platform GetYourGuide found that 50 percent of survey respondents indicated they would enjoy tickets
to a concert or show.
• Books: Books make an ideal holiday gift for everyone from young kids to grandparents. Traditional print books are small enough that they can likely arrive on time even if they’re purchased just a few days before Christmas. E-book sellers enable gift givers to pick the perfect time to notify loved ones they have received an electronic book. Audiobooks, which can be downloaded to a smartphone or given as a CD, make an ideal gift for loved ones who spend a lot of time behind the wheel.
Last-minute holiday shopping can be stressful. However, various sought-after items can be secured at the last minute, ensuring gift givers’ loved ones have a happy holiday season.

Luke 1
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
34”How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[c] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.”
38”I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”
Mary’s Song
46 And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to his own town to register.
The Shepherds and the Angels
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14”Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Mighty God
(Final & 4th Part of “CELEBRATING HIS NAME” Series)
In a world filled with challenges, it is comforting to turn our attention to the Mighty God, Jesus Christ. The name of Jesus is not only beautiful; it embodies strength, love, and the divine power that creates hope and healing in our lives. When we celebrate the name of Jesus as Mighty God, we acknowledge His sovereignty and His ability to work wonders in our everyday experiences.
DANYALE PATTERSON
just six days, He spoke the universe into existence—a cosmos bursting with life and beauty! Each star, each mountain, and each drop of rain tells the story of His creative power. When we look at the natural world, we can’t help but marvel at His handiwork, reminding us that if He can create the universe, He can certainly handle the trials we face today.
Mighty in Salvation
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This promise emphasizes that we are not alone; the Mighty God is our helper and source of strength.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
Understanding Mighty God
When we refer to God as “Mighty,” we are not merely calling Him powerful—though He is certainly that! The term encompasses His ability to do the extraordinary, to intervene in our lives, and to lead us through our toughest moments. In the book of Isaiah, Jesus is prophesied to be “Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6), which signifies His divine authority and strength. This portrayal reassures us that we can rely on Him, no matter what challenges we encounter.
Mighty in Creation
From the very beginning, God demonstrated His might through the act of creation. In
However, Jesus’s might is most profoundly revealed in His saving grace. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He conquered sin and death, offering us eternal life and redemption. This act of love showcases the greatest strength of all—not just brute force, but the ability to forgive, heal, and restore. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we experience this mighty power firsthand. It transforms us, lifts us from despair, and opens the door to a restored relationship with God.
Mighty in Our Lives
In our daily lives, we often find ourselves battling various giants—be it sickness, anxiety, relationship struggles, or financial worries. But here’s the good news: we can call upon the Mighty God! When we bring our concerns to Jesus, we invite His strength into our circumstances. Paul writes in Philippians 4:13 (NKJV) says,
“Dear Lord, you are my refuge and help. You are mighty to save, heal, and deliver. I am in awe of your power and love. You are El ShaddaiGod Almighty. Forgive me for being distressed by problems that come my way. Nothing is impossible for you. You are a God who hears and answers prayers. May my heart always trust in you. In Jesus’ nameAmen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."
–Isaiah 7:14
“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior.” – Titus 3:4-6:

Enjoy your wonderful Christmas present
By Gary Miller
The cameras don’t lie. Their all-seeing eye is there when I can’t be. I know every varmint that comes across my field. There were raccoons, bobcats, turkeys, skunks, coyotes, and even a bear. What’s been absent are the deer. I mean, there have been a couple of spikes and a couple of doe, but nothing like every other year. In fact, I can’t remember another time like this in the twenty years I’ve been hunting this property. I know disease comes and goes among every herd. And I’ve been listening to other hunters who are complaining about the same thing in other states. I’m just not sure. But the only explanation I can come up with is that disease has hit my deer. Most likely EHD, or its close cousin, Blue Tongue. Both are caused by midges that attach to deer and are carrying the disease. I’m not an expert on the exacts but I’ve been around long enough to see this in different areas. Again, I have no other explanation. What’s the answer? For the deer, they will survive and grow. For me, I will too. I will just have to move and find a place where the deer have not been affected. I am forced to do that.
What is the best Christmas you remember? Was it when you were a child? Was it when you received the gift you wanted? Was it when you received a lot of gifts?
Glenn Mollette Guest Editorial
Maybe it was when you had a special meal? Maybe it was when family members gathered who are no longer alive? Was it when you were younger? Or, was it after you became older? Was it back in the day when you were poor? Was it after you weren’t so poor? Was it when your health was better? Or, did it have something to do with the weather? For example, when you were snowed in with nothing but a warm fire and Christmas music playing on the radio.
cial Christmas days for various reasons. It may have been when you were alone in a foreign country. Perhaps you were serving our country in the military and you were on a battlefield someplace fighting for our country. We will all spend Christmas in a strange place at one time or another in life if we live long enough.
Today you may spend Christmas in the nursing home as a resident or visiting a loved one. Nursing homes become very quiet lonely places on Christmas and Christmas Eve. Perhaps you have a family member in prison or maybe you have spent Christmas incarcerated. Possibly you have spent Christmas in the hospital or caring for someone in the hospital.

As I have thought about this during the last few weeks, my mind has gone to moving and changing. Most of the time these are not popular with us. Sometimes it seems that just as we get settled, and just as we sink into some sort of normalcy, something happens that causes us to become unsettled and looking for a new place. We are forced out of our comfort zone and into our next community. I’m also reminded that sometimes God is the instigator of these changes. He does it by making our surroundings so uncomfortable and so unproductive that we have no choice but to move. The good news is the place He is moving us to is always a better place. It will always be a place with peace and provision. So, if your present place is not producing, maybe it’s God just getting you prepared for a better harvest.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in faith so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13
...“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
Of course, the list of possibilities is endless when it comes to Christmas day.
Hopefully you have many good memories and hopefully you have come to a point in your life where you are able to understand those memories that aren’t so great. The best Christmas you’ve ever had could be this Christmas because this is all we have – today. We don’t have yesterday. We don’t have tomorrow. We have today. We are fortunate to have today because we know so many who did not make it until today. They’ve gone on. We miss them. There is an empty place at the table. This usually makes us sad because we remember their presence and the joy they brought to us.
This Christmas take stock of what you have and who you are and where you are in life. It may not be exactly as you planned but it’s where you are and it’s what you have. So often we mess
up our current lives looking back or trying to look forward hoping for something better and we don’t savor the moment.
Give thanks to God for your family and friends. Thank him for the gift of Jesus, the baby whose birth we celebrate.
Take time to embrace your present. The greatest gift we will have on Christmas will be the “present” moment to enjoy Christmas. Unwrap it slowly and enjoy every second. Breathe it in and look around you because you will never have this Christmas again. Next year will be different in some way. You may certainly hope so, but maybe not. We never know what life is going to bring. So, enjoy your “present” this Christmas. On Christmas day it will be your very best gift.

But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; Titus 3:3-6

A festive guide to caroling
Christmas caroling is a joyful tradition that has endured for centuries. Christmas caroling can be traced to the fourth century in Rome. Latin hymns were written to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Historians believe that even before the emergence of Christianity midwinter songs existed to lift people’s spirits through the bleak weather and extended hours of darkness. Christmas caroling continues to unite communities and spread holiday cheer through song. It is time to inspire a resurgence of caroling by planning to gather friends, family, or neighbors for a caroling session. This guide can help anyone plan a memorable caroling event.
Gather your group: Begin by assembling a group of singers. No one needs to be an expert singer, as enthusiasm goes a long way. Reach out to friends, family, coworkers, and/or local community members. Try to get a diverse group of people together whose main goal is to have fun.
Find the right time and date: Typically evening hours after work or during weekends are when you can reach the greatest number of people. The goal is to enable participants to relax and enjoy the experience.
Map out a caroling route: Carefully identify neighborhoods or locations that are known for being festive. While the organizer may choose to carol around his or her own neighborhood, it may be possible to engage more of the community in other settings. Look at local nursing homes or even community centers as caroling locations. Contact businesses along Main Street to see if caroling in the center of town to coincide with holiday shopping may be a good idea.
Compile a list of classics: Most people will want to hear the carols and other songs they know and love. Make a list of classic Christmas songs that aren’t overly complicated and singers will already know how to sing, such as “Jingle Bells,” “Deck the Halls,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” If a particularly accomplished singer is in the group, he or she might do a featured solo. Be sure to have printed copies of the lyrics and sheet music for all participants.
Enlist some musicians
Although caroling is traditionally done a capella, having someone who plays an instrument, like a guitar or violin, can ensure everyone is on the right note and can keep the pace of each song. Plan to rest: Singing can be joyful, but also tiring. Bring along refreshments so the carolers can rest their voices and stop to grab a drink or snack. Tea, coffee and cocoa can warm up participants on chilly days. Perhaps make one of the caroling stops in front of a local coffee shop and pop in after a set.
Coordinate attire:Although everyone does not have to dress alike, a similar element, such as a red scarf or green mittens, can unite the group. Add a charitable element: Consider incorporating a charitable aspect to the caroling. Collect financial or food donations for a local food pantry, or do a toy drive while caroling, encouraging people to offer a wrapped gift in exchange for some beautiful music.
Christmas music often sets the holiday scene, and carolers can bring familiar songs into neighborhoods this time of year.

The sixth student to be awarded the Tucker Scholarship since its inception in 2019, Will is the first Cleveland County resident to receive the award. One of 227 applicants for the scholarship this year, Will was among the 56 finalists invited to interview for the award.
“For Will to emerge atop that list of high-character, high-ability students really says something special about who he is, about how well suited he is for the GardnerWebb experience, and about how confident we are that he will faithfully represent the values of our institution in all that he does,” said Dr.
“We are so proud of Will for his hard work and accomplishments inside and outside the classroom,” added Dr. Shelly Shope, Pinnacle Classical Academy’s headmaster. “We join Will’s family, friends, teachers, coaches, and club leaders in congratulating him for this incredible achievement, and in thanking Carolyn and Robert Tucker for their generosity.”
Founded in 2013, Pinnacle Classical Academy is a tuition-free public charter school located in Shelby. Last year, the 29 seniors in its graduating class were offered a combined $3,109,430 in four-year academic merit and athletic scholarships. The school is recognized as one of the best elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.
