Paying honor to native son Earl Scruggs on his 100th birthday By Jean Gordon The celebration of Earl Scruggs’ 100th birthday on January 6 - his actual birth day - at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville was truly an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime event, Mary Beth Martin said. Martin, the executive director of the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby, was among the packed crowd at the Ryman as bluegrass artists from across the country paid tribute to the Cleveland County native. Appropriately Scruggs’ nephew JT Scruggs began the night’s celebration welcoming everyone to the auditorium. “Being at the Ryman for Earl’s 100 birthday party was great,” Scruggs said. “It was great to see all of the musicians on stage having a good time. It felt like that was because many of them knew Earl personally and he meant so much to them. Many banjos were played Scruggs Style. It was a great night.” As he took the stage, JT Scruggs reminded the attendees the event was a fundraiser for the East Scruggs Center in Uptown Shelby, near his birthplace. Jerry Douglas was the musical director for the show. According to Bluegrass Now, Douglas thanked Nashville and North Carolina for showing up. Douglas said if it weren’t for the “master
of the five string”, none of these musicians would be here if it wasn’t for Earl Scruggs.” Some of the best and brightest in today’s bluegrass community took the stage including 10 banjoist, three ladies and seven men, Douglas told Bluegrass Now. “The concert at the Ryman was the most wonderful and appropriate celebration of Earl’s 100th birthday. It truly was a gathering of some of the most accomplished and beloved bluegrass artists, all paying tribute to Earl and affirming his incredible influence on them personally and on the music,” Martin said. She described the event and the atmosphere as “absolutely electric” and said people attending from all over the country knew they were witnessing an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime event. The 100th birthday celebration continued in honor of Scruggs back in his home county, Cleveland, Saturday night as the Earl Scruggs Center presented “Remembering Earl” at Shelby High School. It was the 10th year anniversary of the Center and a continuation of his 100 years. Guests Saturday night included The Traveling McCourys, Jerry Douglas and Tony Trischka’s Earl Jam. “Earl Scruggs is one of the giants in American music and it’s so special that he’s from Cleveland County,” Martin said.

WNCW for the third annual Earl Scruggs Music Festival Labor Day weekend. The annual festival is August 30 through Sept. 1, 2024. “We are more excited than ever about the Earl Scruggs Festival,” Decker said. “His legacy lives on through bluegrass and Americana music. It is an honor to host it at Tryon International.” JT Scruggs added, “I believe it will just continue to get better and bigger. I can’t wait for another year.” “It has become one of the finest and most exciting music events in the region, and it gets better and better each year,” Martin said of the Center’s partnership with TIEC. “Our theme is “The Music is Coming Home,” and that’s exactly the feeling that everyone gets when they enter the festival grounds - artists and attendees alike,” Martin said. “I find myself looking forward to that moment when it all begins again and people from all over the country and world come together to celebrate Earl and the music that I helped to create. It’s a special thing and I hope the word continues to spread. “

“At the Earl Scruggs Center, we share and emphasize that it was this region - our traditions, culture, and music - that shaped Earl and the world-changing musician that he became.” Martin continued, “We live in a remarkable place, and it was wonderful to see that recognized during the event.” She commended Jerry Douglas and his team, the organizers, for being so generous to involve the Earl Scruggs Center, “and make us the beneficiary of the event.” “I just don’t have words that are adequate to express how grateful we are for this incredible support,” she said. Martin said the Earl Scruggs Center organized a bus trip to the concert in Nashville and there was a “great turnout.” “Everyone had a wonderful time and said that it was a memorable experience. There were also quite a few others who traveled separately from the region to attend the show,” she added. Sharon Decker, President of Tryon Equestrian Partners, Carolinas Operation, attended the celebration in Nashville along with her husband Bob and three of their children - Rob, Matt and Emily. “The event at The Ryman was amazing! historic! so fun!” she said. The Tryon Equestrian Center (TIEC) will partner with the Earl Scruggs Center and

Planning your Valentine’s Day proposal
Make it your own Even if the proposal is taking place on one of the most popular days of the year to get engaged, interject some personality into the occasion. Include important elements that are dear to the person to whom you are proposing, such as favorite flowers or a preferred restaurant. Restaurant reservations may be hard to come by on Valentine’s Day, so you may want to select a more private meal at home or something catered unless you want to share your proposal with a crowd.

Visit possible locations in advance Think about where you would like to propose and visit those areas at different times of the day. Timing a proposal during sunset with the rays creating a warm glow on a park bench or on the incoming tide can make it more magical. Adjust proposal area plans for busier crowds expected on Valentine’s Day. Have the ring at the ready Jewelry shops are in demand around Valentine’s Day, so be sure to choose and have the ring sized well in advance of the proposal. This ensures the ring will be ready in time. If the ring will be a surprise, get hints beforehand to understand your loved one’s design tastes. Consider bringing a friend along when shopping to offer support and advice.

704-487-8114 • DonGibsonTheatre.com Use chocolate to your advantage Boxes of chocolate are ubiquitous on Valentine’s Day. Nestle the ring inside of a box of truffles or another favorite confection and have the question “Will you marry me?” attached to the inside of the box. Hire a photographer Work with a photographer to capture the moment,
whether it’s a professional photographer or a friend enlisted for the task. This way you can be fully immersed in the moment as it unfolds, and then look back on the experience from a different perspective when the photos are printed. Valentine’s Day is a popular time for wedding proposals. With a little planning, the occasion can be even more special.

Rutherford County fan recalls “close friend” Earl Scruggs; celebrating Earl’s 100th
How to prepare garden for spring planting
The final weeks of winter, and even the first few weeks of spring, are still chilly in many parts of the world. Despite those last vestiges of winter chills, late winter is a great time to begin preparing gardens for the coming planting season. Gardens may have to withstand months of harsh weather each winter, and such conditions can take a toll. Gardeners can consider the following tips as they try to restore their gardens and get them ready for spring planting. • Disinfect your tools. It’s common to clean tools in late fall or whenever they’re typically placed in storage for the winter. But cleaning and disinfecting are not necessarily the same thing. If tools were not disinfected at the end of the previous gardening season, disinfect them before doing any work on the garden. Doing so can ensure any lingering bacteria or fungi on tool surfaces are killed prior to the beginning of gardening season. According to the University of Minnesota Extension, plant pathogens, including bacteria and viruses, can be transferred to and infect plants through bits of soil and plant debris left on shovels and pruner blades. Thoroughly disinfecting such tools prior to using them in the spring is a great way to reduce the risk of disease in your garden. • Clear debris from garden beds. Leaves, twigs, sticks, and other debris may have gathered in the garden over the winter. Such debris can inhibit the growth of plants
and vegetables, so make sure all of it is removed prior to planting. Weeds might even begin to sprout up in late winter and early spring, so remove them before they go to seed. • Test the soil. Testing the soil prior to planting can help gardeners determine what their gardens will need to thrive in the coming months. Garden centers and home improvement stores sell home testing kits that are effective and easy to use. Once the results are in, speak with a professional at your local garden center about the best time to amend the soil. • Loosen compacted soil. Soil can become compacted over winter. If compacted soil is not loosened prior to planting, plants will have a hard time getting the water and nutrients they need to thrive. Loosening the soil also provides another opportunity to inspect the garden for any underlying issues, such as fungi or weed growth, that you may have missed when clearing debris or testing the soil. Late winter is a good time to assess a garden and address any issues that developed over the winter so plants and vegetables can thrive come the spring planting season.
Opry. They also picked together on a Nashville television station. Although no longer teaching music, Padgett is renowned for teaching music for many years to young students who wanted to learn to pick the banjo. He had a studio in Shelby and later in Boiling Springs. In November 2022, Padgett was given a piece of memorabilia from Earl Scruggs that he said he always wanted. Scruggs’ niece, Shirley Blanton traveled to Boiling Springs one afternoon and presented Padgett the red bowtie
Earl Scruggs wore in his appearances on The Beverly Hillbillies. At the time, Padgett told Mrs. Blanton he always wanted that bowtie more than anything. She said it never mattered to her Uncle Earl. “If anyone wanted any of his things, memorabilia, he would give it to them.” Padgett’s music rooms in Boiling Springs included memorabilia from Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain boys, and memorabilia from his own lifelong music career.

Missing from the 100th celebration was one of Earl Scruggs’ long time friends, Dan X. Padgett of Mooresboro. Because of illness, Padgett, 86, wasn’t able to go to Nashville, but he was there in spirit. “Me and Earl were real close,” Padgett said. As younger men, Padgett said the two often picked music on the screened-in front porch at Scruggs’ home. “It was in the summertime and we’d just be playing the banjos,” Padgett said.
When Padgett was a “young boy” he left the area and went to Nashville to be near Earl Scruggs and the music industry. “Every Saturday morning Earl would come and pick me up and we’d go to his house in Nashville and play records and play with the banjos,” Padgett said. During a 2022 interview with Padgett, he said Earl Scruggs’ brother Junie taught him to pick the banjo. “I had the opportunity to pick the banjo with Earl,” he said, including on the Grand Ole

Turn a backyard into your own relaxing respite
Shane and Janice Lancaster along side Pastor Van Spencer were greeting folks at last weekend's buffet breakfast at Pleasant Hill Jeff Melton photo United Methodist Church.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:13

Backyards have long been places to unwind and enjoy some peace and quiet surrounded by nature. Thanks in part to financial instability brought on by rising inflation and measures to tame it, homeowners may decide to forgo traditional vacations in favor of staying home this season. There’s no better time to invest in a home, particularly outdoor spaces, to make them welcoming respites. The following are some ways to accomplish that goal. Incorporate a water feature The sound of trickling or bubbling water can make surroundings more serene. A low-maintenance water feature can help to create a calming ambiance. A fountain that does not require a collection pond will reduce the chance it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Locating the fountain out of the sun can keep algae growth at a minimum. Add lights for ambiance Outdoor lighting options include professionally in-

stalled, hardwired lights on the home itself or accent lighting that draws attention to trees or architectural structures on the property. It also may include twinkling lights, which some consider a must-have for any outdoor retreat. Lights come in all types and price points. Hang them on porches, pergolas or cement posts inside decorative planters and then string lights between the posts. This way the lighting can be moved around as desired. Lounging spots A comfortable outdoor loveseat or chairs may be a focal point of the yard, but build in some additional cozy spots specifically for lounging around. Nestle a hammock in a quiet corner of the yard, or enhance a chaise lounge with throw pillows and a large umbrella for napping poolside. Add lushness with plants Plants can transform any space. Use a combination of planted varieties around the yard, then enhance certain areas with potted plants as needed. Plants can make an area more warm and inviting, plus they give butterflies, bees and hummingbirds places to stop by and visit. Consider the help of a professional landscaper to bring a vision of a lush, plant-filled retreat to life. Blend in the pool or spa With some unique landscape architecture, the pool or hot tub can be built right into the landscape, making it a cohesive part of the design. This can make the yard seem even more like an oasis, especially when the pool is flanked by a waterfall or bubbling fountain. Add some music Thanks to wireless speakers that rely on Bluetooth technology, it’s easy to have music piped right into the backyard. Set up a wireless speaker in an inconspicuous spot, such as inside a planter or in the rafters of a gazebo. Turning a backyard into an oasis can provide the respite many people look for on their properties.

Sow Good Seed
(Part 4 of “Moments of Opportunity” Series) Sometimes we think our moments are insignificant. However, what we do over time with the precious moments DANYALE of our lives adds PATTERSON up to produce results we either desire or hate. The Bible calls this the law of reaping what you sow. This biblical law illustrates how our actions, decisions, and attitudes yield consequences that extend far beyond their initial impact. Galatians 6:7 (NIV) states, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” This principle emphasizes that our actions and intentions directly influence the future harvest we reap, whether positive or negative.
COMPOUND INTEREST Just as compound interest exponentially grows one’s investment over time, the consequences of our decisions compound and ripple through our lives. Whether in matters of character, relationships, or spirituality, every seed sown has an eventual harvest, although the effects of sowing and reaping may not be immediately visible. For instance, the consequences of a single decision may only manifest months or even years down the line. This delay in results tests our patience and integrity, urging us to remain steadfast in cultivating seeds of righteousness, even during seasons of drought. Galatians 6:9 (NLT)says, “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” GRACE AND REDEMPTION By seeking the Lord in prayer

and asking him to help us evaluate our choices based on their long-term consequences we can become better and wiser. Just as financial investments require careful planning and consideration, our actions demand intentional foresight. Through obedience to the word of God and the Holy Spirit, we can cultivate positive habits and nurture our spiritual lives. However, if we miss the mark, it is essential to acknowledge the grace and redemption that the Bible offers. God’s forgiveness and mercy allow us to break free from the negative cycles we may find ourselves trapped in. Through repentance and genuine transformation, we can reset the trajectory of our lives. I John 1:9 (NIV) says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, you are worthy to be praised at all times. Your praise shall continually be in my mouth.
Lord, forgive me for sowing unrighteous needs. Cleanse my spirit, soul and mind. Help me to do your will and please you in everything I say and do. Keep me aware of how precious life is so that I will make the most of my time, because the days are evil. Lord, I need wisdom and guidance today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD: TODAY IS YOUR MOMENT! Right now, ask forgiveness for all your sins. Then, ask Jesus to come into your heart to be your Savior and Lord. Ask God to fill you with his Holy Spirit and to lead you to a church where you can grow and serve. Start reading your bible every day. I’ll be praying for you. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ
Prescription opioids can be addictive and dangerous.
By Gary Miller
It only takes a little to lose a lot.
Winter undoubtedly thwarts many outdoor plans in most parts of the country. If you don’t believe me, just wait until the first warm weekend in February. There will be more lawnmowers heard than any other time of the year. It’s not that they want to mow their lawn, but it’s just that they have cabin fever. Another problem with the winter is the amount of light GARY MILLER in each day. There have been several times when one could hunt all day and stay out less than twelve hours. That means twelve hours in the dark. And even though my children think I live most of my life in the dark, I’m not ready to do it literally. I guess you could say that at this time of the year we must live our lives in a cold and dark place. That doesn’t sound too exciting. And the truth is depression is far more likely to occur during these cold and dark days than when it is warm and sunny. There is no doubt we are built for the light. Light was one of the very first creations of God. I think the most obvious reason is that without it we wouldn’t be able to see all the other creation. The beauty of the mountains and trees, the plants and animals would never be fully appreciated without a light to see it by. With light we understand those things that we see, touch, smell, and hear. It puts things in perspective and shows the harmony that each part of nature has with the other. As a child I was very afraid of the dark. My own bedroom became a prison for me each night. As I got older, however, I began to love being outside at night. I used to think it was the darkness that gave me comfort, but it was not. It was the light. It was each star and constellation. It was the moon and the flickering lights that came from distances unknown. It was not the sea of blackness, but it was how one tiny speck of light could penetrate that sea, that mesmerized me. There is no wonder Jesus said of Himself, “I am the light of the world.” I understand that. I understand what He was saying was simply that he gives everything perspective, purpose, and peace. He illuminates the unknown. He makes plain the path. He brings harmony to chaos. By His own life He penetrated a dark world with a light of hope, and He gave us all an invitation to live in this light where we never have to be afraid or unsure and where we can enjoy every minute of each day, no matter if the calendar says June or January.

The dangers of mowing too low
CROSSWORD PUZZLE
Spring marks the return of many things. Trees and flowers begin to bloom again in spring, while warmer temperatures are welcomed back with open arms. Grass also begins to grow again in the spring. That means it’s not too long before homeowners have to dust off their lawn mowers and get to work. Those who don’t necessarily enjoy mowing the lawn may be tempted to cut their grass very low, as doing so can mean longer intervals between mowing sessions. However, mowing grass too low can have a very adverse effect on a lawn. • Cutting too low can injure the grass. Cutting grass too low can injure the grass, creating what’s essentially a domino effect of problems to come. Injured grass will focus on its recovery efforts, thereby making it vulnerable to other issues. • Cutting too low promotes weed growth. Injured grass is vulnerable to invaders, including weeds and in-
sects. Weeds and insects can attack grass as it recovers from injury, and before homeowners know it, their lawns are overcome with a host of problems. • Cutting too low allows crabgrass to thrive. Crabgrass needs ample sunlight to grow. By cutting grass too low, homeowners may unknowingly be promoting crabgrass growth. Crabgrass is unsightly and can rob surrounding grass of the moisture it needs to grow. So lawns cut too low may not only lose their lush appeal thanks to the unattractive appearance of crabgrass, but also because areas surrounding the crabgrass patches might turn brown due to lack of water. • Cutting too low can stress the grass. Cutting too low also makes lawns vulnerable to summer heat. Without blades tall enough to block some of the summer sun, grass can quickly succumb to summer heat, leading to dried out, discolored lawns.
