Ranch dressing mix 1 or more cups water Sour cream and grated Cheddar cheese for garnish Brown ground beef and add all other ingredients. Simmer 1 hour. Serve with sour cream and grated Cheddar cheese. CHOCOLATE POUND CAKE Connie Bell 1 cup butter ½ cup shortening 3 cups sugar 5 eggs

3 c. all-purpose flour ½ t. baking powder 4 T. cocoa 1 cup milk 1 T. vanilla Cream shortening and butter. Add sugar and eggs. Sift flour, baking powder, and cocoa. Alternately add dry ingredients with milk and vanilla. Pour into greased and floured pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour 20 minutes. ICE WITH Busy Day Frosting. BUSY DAY FROSTING Connie Bell 6 T. water ¼ cup butter 2 t. vanilla ½ cup cocoa 3 c. powdered sugar Boil 6 T. water. Add to butter and vanilla. Add cocoa and powdered sugar and mix until blended and spread on cooled cake.

RITZ PIE Betty Gamble 3 egg whites ½ t. baking powder 1 cup sugar 20 Ritz crackers ¾ c. pecans ½ t. vanilla Whipped topping Strawberries for garnish Beat egg whites and baking powder until stiff. Slowly add sugar. Add very finely crushed Ritz crackers, coarsely chopped nuts and vanilla. Pour into a well-buttered 9-inch pie plate. Bake 325 degrees 30 minutes. Cool. Cover with whipped topping and chill 1 hour before serving. Can garnish with strawberries.

Governor’s Volunteer Service Award Nominations Open until February 14 Nominations are now being accepted for the 2024 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. The awards program, created by the Ofﬁce of the Governor in 1979, recognizes North Carolina’s most dedicated volunteers. Through the years, the award has been bestowed on thousands of North Carolinians who have shown concern and compassion for their neighbors by

volunteering in their local community. Nominations are evaluated by a committee comprised of local community members. The committee selects up to ten individuals or a group to be recognized, by the state, for their outstanding contributions to their communities. Of the submitted, one may be recommended for the Governor’s Medallion Volunteer Service Award, which is awarded

Signs your gutters are in need of repair Fall is a great time to tackle projects around the house. The weather each fall allows homeowners to make improvements to their homes’ exteriors without worrying about extreme heat or cold, while interior projects like painting are made easier because homeowners can open the windows to allow for proper ventilation. Fall also marks a great time to prepare for upcoming projects that can make winter work that much easier. For example, fall is a great time to take stock of your gutters so you can address any issues before leaves begin to fall or the first snowstorm touches down. Compromised gutters can contribute to water issues in basements and adversely affect a home’s foundation if not addressed immediately, so it behooves homeown-

ers to learn the signs that gutters are in need of repair or replacement. • Gutters hanging off the home: Gutters were once installed predominantly with spikes. However, many industry professionals now install gutters with hanger brackets. Why the change? Spikes loosen over time, leading to the gutters hanging off the home. That can contribute to serious issues if left untreated. Gutters hanging off the home need not necessarily be replaced, but rather secured to the home, ideally with hanger brackets instead of spikes. Brackets hook into the front of the gutter and are then screwed into the fascia of a home. A professional who specializes in gutter repair can perform this task relatively quickly, and it’s an inex-
