Young Shelby artist Jr. Thompson a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan by MICHAEL E. POWELL michael@cfmedia.info To say that seven-year-old Shelby artist Qadry Thompson, Jr. loves Sonic the Hedgehog, the superfast, blue spiky-haired cartoon hedgehog, immensely, is, at best, an understatement! Simply put – and according to his mom, Melissa Spikes – the popular (and VERY) speedy cartoon character is just about all her very talented son draws these days. “Jr.”, as he is known to his family, his fellow students, and his teacher, Mrs. Ykeiah Lawrence, at James Love Elementary, is one talented young man and has many, many sketchbooks filled with his art (mostly Sonic and his buddies, of course!) to prove it. “Jr.” is no “flash-in-the-pan” creator as he skillfully renders the blue, furry speedster and his cartoon buddies, “Knuckles,” and the two-tailed, yellow, flying fox character, “Tails” in the pages of said sketchbooks, and coloring them exactly as he sees them on his favorite cartoon show. “Jr.” was born and raised in Shelby, and has a brother and two sisters, said his mom, who

noted her son “…likes school overall and all his subjects,” but art and drawing is his main love. “From age two and going forward, he started liking Sonic the Hedgehog, which I introduced him to in order to keep him occupied and interested while I was working around the house,” said mom, Melissa, who dabbled in art herself. She also noted the character was one of her favorites as well when she was younger. She even has a tattoo of the character, based on one of her son’s drawings – on her wrist done by Gastonia tattoo artist Rashad Douglas. “When Jr. first saw Sonic, he loved him right off the bat,” she said. As for Jr’s. artistic abilities, Melissa said she feels he takes that after her side of the family a bit, but added, “What he sees in his mind, he can put on paper. If he sees it, he can do it. His artistic ability, I feel, isn’t stopping anytime soon!”, adding that he is “having fun” painting Sonic and his friends. Jr. said, as he pointed out some of his Sonic and company drawings in one of his many sketchbooks, “I enjoy drawing him (Sonic). It is lots of fun for

me. I draw him all the time!” “Jr.” has done some paintings, which his mom proudly hangs on their living room and bedroom walls. She said her son’s paintings are done in acrylic paints and his drawing are in pencil or colored markers. Melissa, who is a retail banker in Qadry “Jr.” Thompson, 7, sits on his living room sofa, surrounded by some of Shelby, said her his “Sonic the Hedgehog” cartoon artwork, and holding a stuffed version of the son will play Sonic blue, spikey-haired speedster. the Hedgehog when playing with his friends, adding he also likes to play “army,” but his first love is drawing or painting Sonic characters. “He just loves all things Sonic,” she said. Melissa continued, “We have had many family members and friends requesting him to do a piece of art for them, and his art and skills are starting to really get out there. People are interested in his work; his art.” There are times Young Shelby artist, Qadry “Jr.” Thompson, with his mom, Melissa Spikes, he gets frustrated, showing off some of his amazing artwork of his favorite object of inspiration, she said, when he “Sonic the Hedgehog.” can’t get something that!” he’s trying to draw Melissa also noted right, but she said she tells him to not get frustrated; that it’s okay she wanted to say to not “get it right” all the time, “thank you” to her sisbut that it is important to keep on ter, Myisha as well as trying and doing better, and to Mr. Rashad Douglas for never give up, but to just “keep their support. Melissa noted if on going; to keep on trying.” Melissa said everyone in her someone would like to family is in awe of Jr.’s ability and commission Jr. to do talent, adding, “All of our church a piece of Sonic art The tattoo Melissa Spikes, Jr.’s mom, family at New Jerusalem Rebirth for them, she can be had done on her arm, based on one of Church are very supportive of reached at missmenot@ her son’s drawings, along with the drawhim and we are so thankful for icloud.com. ing from which it was taken.

No, I think we are going to have an early spring.

I doubt it, I think we would have had something already.

I hope so. It has been over 700 days without a measurable snow.

I hope not, I don’t care for snow.

I think we are going to have some flurries.

Byrd and Bear 5K for Autism Awareness

The Schiele Museum’s 24th Annual Fossil Fair Visitors are invited to travel back in time at The Schiele Museum of Natural History on Saturday, February 24, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. during the 24th Annual Fossil Fair. Participants can search for North Carolina fossils, meet live animals (“living fossils”), mine for gemstones, take a Dino Safari, talk to geologists and paleontologists, enjoy a dinosaur-themed planetarium show, and learn all about prehistoric life through hands-on activities. For rock collectors, gemstone enthusiasts, or fossil hunters, the museum will have experts on hand to identify specimens, educate visitors, and sell geodes, fossils, rocks, jewelry, and more. Geologists will be available to help beginners mine for their own gemstones and learn more about their finds. There will also be family-friendly scavenger hunts, fossil digs, crafts, and a special planetarium show, “Jurassic Flaws”, that explores the science behind a popular dinosaur movie. A special digital guide has been developed for Fossil Fair by Pulseworks LLC, an Atlanta-based company. This AI-powered prototype is designed to work on visitor devices and can answer questions, provide details about specific exhibits, and offer quizzes, games, and interactive features that allow deeper exploration of the topics participants will encounter at The Schiele. In addition, The Schiele will be unveiling plans for a new dinosaur hall during the event. Visitors can learn more

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. – Philippians 4:6 -

Attorney General Josh Stein appealed the North Carolina Utilities Commission’s decision to grant a rate increase to Duke Energy Carolinas on Wednesday, Feb. 14. “Every dollar matters for North Carolina families,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “Yet, Duke Energy’s rate increase is too high. So, I’m asking the Court to side with North Carolina’s ratepayers and to reject this rate increase.”

If the North Carolina Supreme Court does not rule in favor of Attorney General Stein, the Commission’s order would result in a net overall increase in rates of approximately 15 percent for consumers. An increase of that magnitude means that in three years, a typical ratepayer will pay approximately $20 more monthly for their utility bill.

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 Continued To Page 15

Golden LEAF Scholarship applications due March 1 The Golden LEAF Colleges and Universities Scholarship application for the 2024-2025 academic year is now available at CFNC.org. A total of 215 awards will be offered to first-time recipients from qualifying rural counties. Applications are due March 1, 2024. The awards are valued at $14,000 ($3,500 per year for up to four years) for North Carolina high school students attending a participating North Carolina college or university. North Carolina community college transfer students can receive $3,500 per year for up to three years. “The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program is an important component of the Foundation’s workforce preparedness strategy,” said Golden LEAF President, Chief Executive Officer Scott T. Hamilton. “The Golden LEAF Board established the scholarship program 25 years ago with the goal for Golden LEAF scholars to gain the talent, knowledge, and skills necessary to help North Carolina’s rural communities thrive by returning home to live, work, and raise families.” To be eligible, students must be a graduating North Carolina high school senior or a currently enrolled North Carolina community college transfer student, enrolling full-time in the fall at a participating North Carolina public or private college or university. Recipients are selected based upon multiple factors including an intent to return to a rural North Carolina County after graduation. Applicants must also fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and demonstrate financial need as determined by the application process; have a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.5; and be a resident of a rural North Carolina County that is economically distressed. Click here for the full list of eligible counties. For 25 years, the Golden LEAF Scholarship Program has provided more than 6,600 scholarships to help rural students attend the state’s colleges and universities. The Golden LEAF Scholarship Program is administered by the North Carolina

In the Old Testament, there is a story of a woman named Rahab who played a DANYALE crucial role PATTERSON in the history of Israel. Rahab was a prostitute living in the city of Jericho, a city known for its sinfulness and idolatry. Despite her occupation, Rahab showed great courage and faith when she aided the Israelite spies who came to scout out the city before they conquered it. Rahab sheltered the spies in her home and when the king of Jericho discovered their presence, she cleverly hid them on her roof under bundles of flax. Rahab’s actions were not only brave, but they were also a demonstration of her faith in the God of Israel. In Joshua 2:9 (GNT) she confessed to the spies,

“I know that the LORD has given you this land. Everyone in the country is terrified of you.” Redemption and Salvation In return for her loyalty and assistance, the Israelite spies made a covenant with Rahab to spare her and her family when they conquered the city. They instructed her to tie a scarlet cord in her window as a sign of her allegiance to them. Rahab obeyed their instructions and her family was indeed saved when the Israelites attacked Jericho. The scarlet thread that Rahab hung from her window served as a symbol of redemption and salvation. It also foreshadowed the blood of Christ, which would one day be shed for the forgiveness of sins. Just as Rahab found deliverance through her faith in God and the scarlet thread, we too can find redemption through our faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:7 (AMP), “In Him we

have redemption [that is, our deliverance and salvation] through His blood, [which paid the penalty for our sin and resulted in] the forgiveness and complete pardon of our sin, in accordance with the riches of His grace.” Rahab’s story reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace and mercy. Despite her past sin and occupation, God used Rahab in a powerful way to fulfill His plans and purposes. In fact, as an added bonus, she became a part of Jesus’ genealogy. PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father God, despite my sins and flaws, you love me unconditionally and allow me to repent from my foolish ways. Lord, you are gracious, full of compassion, slow to anger and great in mercy. Forgive me for displeasing you in thoughts, words and actions. Please help me to renew my mind and to make choices that align with the Bible. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD: For those seeking a deeper connection with God, I encourage you to open your heart to His love and grace. Embrace the truth of His presence in your life, seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you on your spiritual journey, and find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God. Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! Heating assistance for qualified families By Loretta Cozart Cleveland County Department of Social Services is now taking applications from individuals who need financial assistance paying their heating bills. Each eligible household may receive up to a maximum of $600 per year for combined heating and cooling assistance. This is a federally funded program, and the total amount that Cleveland County received for heating and cooling assistance this year was $591,111. Of this total funding, $196,000 was paid to 949 households for cooling assistance this past summer. That deduction leaves a remaining balance of $395,111 in the County’s emergency fund to pay for heating bills this winter.

IMPORTANCE INTEGRATION MANAGEMENT MEETING ORGANIZE PLANNER PRIORITY REMINDER SCHEDULE TASKS TIMER VALUES

To be eligible to receive financial assistance with heating, a household must: • Be located in Cleveland County • Have at least one U.S. citizen or non-citizen who meets the eligibility criteria • Have income equal to or less than 150 percent of the federal poverty limit For example: • For a household of one, an income of $18,210 or less • For a family of four, an income of $47,070 or less • Have a health-related issue that might be made worse without heat • Have a utility bill that shows how much is owed to the utility company • Be responsible for their heating cost Each household is individually evaluated, and if determined eligible for

assistance, payments are made directly to the household’s utility company. Each household can receive a maximum of $600 yearly in heating and cooling financial assistance. For example, if a household received $200 for cooling assistance this summer, they would be eligible to receive up to $400 more for heating assistance this winter. This program provides a total payment to the utility company on behalf of the person who has applied and is determined to meet eligibility requirements. However, many utility bills bundle electricity or heating with water, sewage, and/or trash. This program provides financial assistance for the portion of the bill that covers heat-

ing. This program aims to resolve the financial crisis caused by the heating bill. Suppose the total utility bill has fees associated with other utilities (trash, water, sewer). In that case, that portion of the bill must be paid before the applicant can receive financial assistance for heating, or else the household crisis will not be resolved. Last year, Cleveland County provided heating and cooling assistance to 2,168 applicants for a total of $467,000 For more information on the program and eligibility, visit www.ncdhhs. gov/assistance/low-income-services/crisis-intervention. You also can call Cleveland County’s Department of Social Services at (704) 487-0661, ext. 394.

In a recent report by SelectSoftware, an employment search and advisory firm, employees in North Carolina have seen the most significant decline in leaving their jobs in all but one other US state. In a study conducted between November 2022 and November 2023, the rate of job quitting in North Carolina decreased by 35.7%. Only California saw a more considerable decrease of 44.8%. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics measures and reports state-by-state quit rates. In October 2023, Alaska ranked as the top state with the highest job resignation rate of 3.55 for non-farm-related employment. South Carolina was also among the states with the most prevalent resignation rates and ranked seventh at 3.10. North Carolina had a rate of 2.70 with an average monthly quit count of 12,500. While non-farm-related job resignation rates in North Carolina remain the 20th highest in the nation, the 35.7% yearto-year decline in job quitting is positive news. There are many fac-

tors in job retention. SelectSoftware reports that lack of recognition is the number one reason employees leave their jobs, as 66% of employees say they would quit if they didn’t feel appreciated. Employees who feel recognized are more engaged at work. A study by Globoforce/WorkHuman, another workforce research firm, found that employees who receive regular recognition are five times more likely to feel valued and appreciated, six times more likely to invest in their work, and seven times more likely to stay with their current employer for at least another year. Peerto-peer recognition is just as crucial as manager recognition. A separate survey by Globoforce/ Workhuman found that 41% of employees want to be recognized by a peer, and 37% want to be acknowledged by their managers. And employees who feel recognized are more engaged at work. According to a Gallup poll, organizations with high employee engagement levels are 21% more profitable. About SelectSoftware:

Kings Mountain Gateway Trail 5K and 10-mile run, March 23 By Loretta Cozart Kings Mountain Gateway Trail announced its 5K and10-mile runs for March 23 this year at 807 S. Battleground Ave. in Kings Mountain. Runners can sign up at www.runsignup.com. The runs are professionally managed on the day of the run, on Facebook, and at the website www.runsignup.com. Sponsors for the run receive a thank you letter and complimentary runner forms to give to runners. Complimentary run shirts are given to the runners, and nice trophies are awarded to win-

ners of all ages and run categories. Run Shirts have the sponsor names on the back, and a large banner is placed with sponsor names on the front of the trail building. They are listed on the trail website each year. The trail opened in 2009 and began having annual 5K and l0-Mile runs for a fundraiser, exercise, and getting folks to Kings Mountain. Many local folks from a large area around Kings Mountain come to participate in a healthy event, giving runners something to look forward to and having lots of outdoor fun.

Kings Mountain Gateway Trail Director Shirley Brutko said, “2024 marks the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail’s 15th year, and all the runs have been a big success. We usually have anywhere between 180 to 230 runners participating and approximately 150 attending and watching the event.” “It supports tourism and economic development for Kings Mountain, the county, and the region. Sometimes we have out-of-town runners who stay at our local hotels,” she continued. “We have been able to give pot-

tery leaves and beautiful pottery disks for trophies, which are very popular with our runners. We run in all weather and have sometimes had rain, snow, ice, and sunshine. We serve refreshments at the event and have a large tent to shelter runners if needed. All sponsor dollars are used to pay for the run expenses and to help with trail needs such as upkeep, etc.” To sign up, visit www. runsignup.com. Women Roofers lend hand up top Article Provided By: Jean Gordon Three members of the PiedmontPleasant Hill Community Club sat at long white-clothed tables inside an unlighted clubhouse recently reminiscing about the days of the award-winning community club and how the clubhouse was the center of the community. They discussed the efforts in saving the more than 60-year-old building and community club. As the ladies quietly talked inside, there were rumblings up on the roof of the 1957 building. The Women Roofers were busy taking off shingles and preparing to recover the flat roof. The project was begun in the fall of 2019 with a commitment to complete flat part of the roof in 2020. But COVID-19 changed everything and roofing came to a halt for the nationally known Women Roofers. Finally during the weekend of March 11-13, led by Bossman Billy Honeycutt, the roofing project was completed, the yard cleaned up and members are now ready for the next improvement projects and hopefully a covered dish dinner in the future. Although three days were scheduled to complete the job, the roofers were finished Friday afternoon. Saturday morning was used for a few minor finishing tasks and final clean-up. Club members Nancy Koone, 70, Doris Keever, 90, and Mae McMahan, 76, met the roofers at the clubhouse each morning. They helped prepare delicious lunch meals for the roofers and around noon Thursday and Friday everyone gathered inside the

clubhouse for potato soup, vegetable beef soup, cornbread and homemade desserts. McMahan made vanilla pound cake with icing, Coca Cola cake and apple cake. Club members Steve and Lois Dimsdale brought hot dogs and chili on Friday. On Saturday morning, Doris was joined on site by Cheryl Austin, club president. Social distancing and mask wearing were observed at all times. Doris is a chapter member of the community club that was formed in the mid-1950s. She looks forward to the day members can come back together. clubhouse, the building to Prior members met at another location for a couple of years, she said. Nancy joined the club with her parents when she was about five years old and remembers the fun times meeting there with other children of the community and nearby rural communities. “Up until COVID we had quarterly meetings and pot luck or covered dish dinners about once a quarter,’ Nancy said. As the age or the roof caught up with the club, leaking became a problem in several areas of the clubhouse. Club members began hosting spaghetti dinners and having yard sales to raise money to repair the roof. Even during that time buckets were placed strategically throughout the building to catch the water. “I raised about $600 one time by myself,” a proud Doris spoke up. “We used the money we raised to get the roof done,” she said.

Following the leadership of Bossman Billy (Honeycutt), far left, Women Roofers on the job. As the money was being raised, Doris said she contacted Laura Hodge, a member of Women Roofers and a pharmacist at the Medicine Box in nearby Rutherfordton, inquiring about possible help from the group. “We had heard about the good work of the Women Roofers,” Doris explained. Hodge said she immediately contacted Billy Honeycutt and he and fellow roofer Nell Bovender began the discussions. “They (club) raised the funds and we agreed to do the work,” Honeycutt said. Years ago when the Women Roofers were organized, the women and Honeycutt Community Mt. Vernon the roofed Clubhouse after the community raised the money for supplies. “At that time we had just begun and a group came to help us,” Nell said. “They probably knew more about roofing at that time than we did” Bovender said If there is a request for a community roofing project and the money can be raised, the group will consider the job, Bovender said. There have been times when community groups will not only raise money for materials but have also paid the roofers for the work. The money went back into the Women Roofers coffers to roof other homes. Honeycutt said the group never gets caught up with its long list of roofing projects. “There is always a need,” he said. The Piedmont-Pleasant Hill Clubhouse features a flat roof on the back side of the

building and that was new to the group. Honeycutt taught the roofers what to do and the job was done in two days. “At some time they will have to add something to the flat roof...We stopped the leak,” he said. As the roofers worked, there was talk from members of hopefully getting together for the annual Christmas dinner in 2021. The 2020 event was canceled because of COVID. The gatherings will all depend on the health of the County, State and Nation. “Doris always brought gifts for all the children,” Mae said of past Christmas parties. Mae McMahan remembers being a part of the community club also as a teenager and it was a “hang-out” spot for teens on Friday nights. There was a shuffle board almost the length of the clubhouse and there were other games. “It was a fun time,” Mae said. There was music, but dancing was never allowed. Nancy remembers children from all across the area gathering at the clubhouse to play the Piedmont-Pleasant Hill children. “The clubhouse was the heart of the community,” Nancy said. It was the setting for community parties, wedding and anniversary receptions. But when the two community churches - Piedmont and Pleasant Hill - both built fellowship halls, more events were held there.

Pre-launch Casino Neighborhood Spring Clean Up opening this summer The Catawba Nation announced Friday it will fast-track the opening of the Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort project in Kings Mountain by opening a “prelaunch” facility this summer with 500 slot machines. The pre-launch facility, which will be constructed using prefabricated modular structures, will provide an initial opportunity for patrons to game with limited food & beverage and other guest amenities. “With the completion of our compact with the State of North Carolina, the

Catawba Nation is eager to open the casino as quickly as possible to begin bringing economic benefits and jobs to the state and region,” Catawba Chief Bill Harris said. “We’re working with Delaware North, our consultant on the Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort project, as well as our developer, Skyboat Gaming, to make that happen by opening what we are calling a ‘pre-launch’ facility this summer.” An introductory phase of the full casino is still planned and will feature an additional 1,300 slot machines. It will

be a permanent structure that will become part of the full casino. Its construction is expected to take about a year. “It makes sense to have the temporary pre-launch facility to start, and it will continue to operate during the construction of the introductory phase and possibly subsequent phases,” said Brian Hansberry, president of Delaware North’s gaming business. “It gives us a place to teach incoming staff and accommodates people in the region who are anxious to start gaming this summer.” The 17-acre casino site

off Dixon School Road in Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, is near Interstate 85 and about 35 miles west of Charlotte. The total $273 million casino resort project is expected to create 2,600 permanent jobs at full buildout and thousands of construction jobs in the region. “This project will prove to be a long-lasting and sustainable economic engine for the residents of Cleveland County, we are excited about the expedited timeline” said Cleveland County Commissioner Johnny Hutchins.
