WOMEN THROUGHOUT AMERICAN HISTORY
Throughout American history women have made significant contributions in all walks of life. The following women are among those whose achievements warrant merit and appreciation from men and women alike.
Louisa May Alcott
Best known for her novel Little Women, Louisa May Alcott actually published more than 250 works despite passing away at the relatively young age of 55 in 1888. An advocate for women’s rights, including the right to vote, Alcott was the first registered woman voter in Concord, Massachusetts.
Elizabeth Blackwell
Young girls who aspire to be doctors owe a lot to Elizabeth Blackwell, who was the first female doctor in the United States. After repeated rejection from medical schools because of her sex, Blackwell was eventually accepted into New York’s Geneva College, braving prejudice from professors and fellow students alike who felt a woman did not belong studying medicine.
Pearl S. Buck
Award-winning writer
Pearl S. Buck won both a Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming the first American woman to win that prestigious award. Buck was also a noted humanitarian whose works helped shed light on a host of topics, including immigration, adoption, missionary work, and women’s rights.
Grace Hopper
Grace Hopper was a pioneer in the field of computer programming and a well-respected, not to mention, high-ranking Naval officer. The USS Hopper, a guided missile destroyer ship in the U.S. Naval fleet, is named after the woman whose nickname was “Amazing Grace.”
Helen Keller
Despite a childhood disease that left her deaf, mute and blind, Helen Keller became a nationally recognized advocate for people with disabilities in addition to an expert author and lecturer. An ardent anti-war activist, Keller, who passed away in 1968, also campaigned for women’s suffrage and workers’ rights.
Sandra Day
O’Connor
The first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Sandra Day O’Connor served as an Associate Justice for a quarter century until her retirement in 2006. A breast cancer survivor, O’Connor was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in the summer of 2009.
Dr. Sally Ride
Dr. Sally Ride was the first American woman, and then-youngest American, to enter space. A Los Angeles native, Dr. Ride is currently the President and CEO of Sally Ride Science, a company devoted to creating entertaining science programs and publications for upper elementary and middle school students.

It seems like turkey season snuck up on me. Some southern states are either open now or are opening in a few days. My own area is about a month away, but that doesn’t stop the gobblers from gathering up and scouting out the hens. Some hunters are spotting flocks of these birds right now in the fields. And the warm days are making it all come together. Spring is in the air, trees are blooming, the toms are gobbling, and the turkey hunters are as anxious as we have ever been. Some of my best hunting stories have come from my time chasing gobblers. There are hardly any hunts that don’t have some unique twist to them. There are so many variables when hunting turkeys that anything can, and probably will, happen. I have made 50-yard shots at times, and then at other times I have been unable to get my gun on one when he’s less than 10 yards away. There have been days when it seems I could have coughed, and they would have flown down to me. And other times when a real hen couldn’t get an old gobbler to get anywhere near it. To me, turkey hunting is the most unpredictable hunting there is. And what makes it worse is that from a distance, it seems pretty cut-and-dry. From a distance, it seems if one just does the basics, everything should go as planned with very few heartaches. I got lost for a moment. I had to think if I was talking about turkey hunting, or life. In this respect they are closely related.
Life too, seems fairly simple from a distance. As a young adult, you look at things from that distance and think that if the basics are done, everything ought to fall in place with very few heartaches. We think if we just get an education, get a good job, manage our money, and stay away from questionable people and conduct, our lives ought to end up with a 3-bedroom 2-bath house, 2 cute children, a healthy marriage, a good income, and a comfortable retirement. Sounds easy enough – until we get into the hunt. Or until we get into that adult life. It’s then we realize it’s harder than it looks. And sometimes we have unplanned successes and unanticipated failures. And some of those failures are not just over when the season is over, but they are carried over season after season. And soon we realize life is not as cleancut as we thought, and there is nothing normal about this year – or any year. But the good news is this. Our imaginations were not ones that came from reality or from God. If you think about it, no one has that life you imagined. It is not the norm. What’s real and normal are lives that are made up of hurts, heartaches, and habits. And that’s why Jesus said if we would come to Him, He would give us rest. Why? Because life, like turkey hunting, is unpredictably hard at times. And at the end of those days, there is nothing better than resting with the One who understands how hard life can really be.

Josh Propst, executive director of BGCCC, shared, “This year, we expanded our summer camps to four sites and will serve over 200 children. We aim to instill a love for nature, foster an understanding of food sources, and cultivate a sense of adventure in the great outdoors. Witnessing children interact with baby goats or sing songs while trekking through nature trails, or enjoying time on the Broad River reaffirms the importance of our fundraising efforts.”

IRS enhances Where’s My Refund? tool for 2024 filing season
With millions of tax refunds going out each week, the Internal Revenue Service reminded taxpayers that recent improvements to Where's My Refund? on IRS.gov provides more information and remain the best way to check the status of a refund.
The Where’s My Refund? tool provides taxpayers with three key pieces of information: IRS confirmation of receiving a federal tax return, approval of the tax refund, and issuing date of the approved tax refund. Information for returns from tax years 2023, 2022, and 2021 is available.
During this busy filing season, millions of taxpayers anticipate refunds. The improvements to the heavily used tool follow Inflation Reduction Act funding, which provides for a variety of IRS technological advances and upgrades designed to help taxpayers and transform agency operations.
To use Where’s My Refund?, taxpayers must enter their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification num-
ber, filing status, and the exact whole dollar amount of their expected refund from the original tax return for the year they're checking.
Once the IRS acknowledges receipt of a return, refund status information is typically available within:
• 24 hours after receipt of a taxpayer's e-filed tax year 2023 return.
• Three to four days after receipt of an e-filed tax year 2022 or 2021 return.
• Four weeks after mailing a paper return.
Taxpayers should note that the IRS updates the tool once daily, usually overnight, so there's no need to check more often.
The IRS reminds taxpayers that the fastest way to get a refund is by filing electronically and using direct deposit.
Many different factors may affect the timing of refund delivery:
• The tax return has errors, requires additional review, or is incomplete.
• The return needs a correction to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit.
• The time between the IRS issuing the refund and the bank posting it to an account may vary since processing times fluctuate.
The IRS will contact taxpayers by mail if more information is needed to process a return. IRS phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of a refund if:
• 21 days or more have passed since a return was filed electronically.
• Six weeks or more have passed since a return was mailed.
• Where’s My Refund? tells the taxpayer to contact the IRS.
If a taxpayer refund isn't what is expected, it may be due to changes made by the IRS. These changes could include corrections to the Child Tax Credit or EITC amounts or an offset from all or part of the refund amount to pay past-due tax or debts. More information about reduced refunds is available on IRS.gov.
The deadline for most taxpayers to file a tax return, pay any tax due or request an extension to file is Monday, April 15.

For whosover shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13
“Part 2 of Metaphors:
Illuminating Truths in the Shadows Series”
trust. Just as a shepherd cares for his flock, God cares for each one of us individually and desires to lead us on the right path. He is the Good Shepherd who will never lead us astray. In Psalm 23:1 (NIV) , David declares, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
DIRECTION AND PROTECTION
point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
As Christians, we often hear the phrase “we are His sheep” about God being our shepherd. But why does the Bible use this imagery to describe us? And what does it mean for us as believers? In John 10:27 (NLT), Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” This verse highlights the symbiotic relationship between the shepherd and his sheep. The analogy of God being our shepherd and us being his sheep serves as a powerful reminder of our need for His guidance, protection, provision, and
Sheep are known for their tendency to wander off and get lost if not closely watched by their shepherd. In the same way, we as humans often stray from God’s path and find ourselves in situations that lead us away from His will. Psalm 119:176 says, “I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands.” Just as a shepherd seeks out his lost sheep, God also seeks out each one of us when we stray from His ways. If we surrender ourselves to him, he will lead us and show us the right path to take.
Also, just as a shepherd protects his flock from danger, God is our protector against the attacks of the enemy. Sheep are known for their inability to fend for themselves against predators. In 1 Peter 5:8 (NIV), we are warned to “be alert and sober-minded.” It says, “Be sober [well-balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour.”
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“O Shepherd of Israel; leader of your flock, seated on your throne above the winged creatures, I give you praise. Lord, you are God, and I am yours. You take good care of me. Thank you for your provision and protection. I will listen to your voice today. Forgive me for going astray and doing my own thing instead of your will. Show me the right path, O LORD;
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.
