Homes for Heroes

A Connecticut couple who transferred to Rutherford County in 2020 for a job, would experience unbelievable tragedy less than three years later and yet the outpouring of love and friendship after the tragedy changed their lives forever.

Rene and Francine Mira and their two children (ages 15 and 5) came to Forest City when Rene was transferred with Trelleborg, Rutherfordton. The family knew no one when they arrived but began to make friends as their children enrolled at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy.

While Rene worked with Trelleborg, Francine was employed with financial investors with goals of making money. Being rich was a goal in the back of her mind.

But a horrible traffic accident in 2023 in Cleveland County changed their perspective on life.

Rather than having a goal of making money, Francine’s goal is to help others, the way her family was helped after the accident. The car crash claimed Rene’s mother’s life and a month later his father died in El Salvador, where the family lives. Two other family members were critically injured in the accident.

Francine said her husband Rene was picking up his mother, sister and brother-in-law from the Charlotte airport. They were traveling from El Salvador for their first visit to North Carolina. The family planned to celebrate the mom’s birthday and the couple’s young daughter’s birthday.

Francine was home with the children, when she got a call from her husband. He told her he had been in a bad accident and was at the Shelby hospital.

The family was traveling on US 74 in Shelby when a male driver in another vehicle crossed

Rene’s father in El Salvador died one month later due to broken heart syndrome.

While the family was dealing with the tragedy, Francine and Rene were the recipients of an outpouring of love from people in Cleveland and Rutherford counties.

“For a while, a whole month, people were helping with my children,” Francine said.

They did not expect the kindness from people they didn’t even know.

A go-fund me page was set up by Trelleborg employees

“If we had still been living in Connecticut, we would never have received this kind of help,” Francine said.

Neighbors and friends from Trelleborg made sure the children received meals each day as Francine was traveling back and forth to the hospital to help with those who were injured.

Her husband’s sister and brother-in-law are still under doctors care and were back from El Salvador in January for follow-up surgery and visits. They will be back in April for

y immediate need the family had during the time was fulfilled by people they didn’t

After the experience and help from people in Cleveland and Rutherford counties, life changed for Francine. ‘“Now my life is about helping others. I do not need to be rich. I want to help others,” an emotional Francine explained.

Deciding to quit her work with investors, Francine began looking for ways to “pay it forward.” One day as she was searching, she came upon the organization “Homes for Heroes” and she knew immediately that was what she was going to do.

“This is one of the reasons why I chose to join this Homes for Heroes rewards program as a way to give back to the community. When we went through the accident the amount of support we received was just

“I want to help as many Heroes as I can,” she said.

As Francine continued to research the Homes for Heroes rewards program she joined RE/ MAX Journey in Rutherfordton to help find homes for heroes and

She became more aware of all those in Cleveland and Rutherford counties that could receive assistance when buying their own home or selling one.

Homes for Heroes is for firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, military personnel (active, reserve & veterans), healthcare professionals and teachers.

Because of the unfailing love and support the family received in Cleveland County and at the hospital after the wreck and the support she received in Rutherford, she is working in both counties to find rewards for Homes for Heroes for residents who are eligible.

These days Francine is taking the Homes for Heroes information

to the veterans service office, businesses and even schools to help local heroes know they can buy a house and receive rewards.

Any hero can save money when buying or selling a home.

“I want to help as many heroes as I can,” she said.

About Homes for Heroes

Shortly after 9/11 Homes or Heroes, Inc. was established as a way to give back and say, “Thank you” for local heroes for all they do.

Heroes save an average of $3,000 when they buy or sell a home with ReMax Journey Homes for Heroes or $6,000 if they do both.

Francine said when adding up the savings from local real estate agents, loan officers, title companies, home inspectors and other everyday deals in Cleveland and Rutherford counties, the savings are way beyond what people can get from other national programs.

Requirements that must be met to receive the Hero Rewards are: be a hero, be registered on HomeForHeroes.com and work with a Homes for Heroes real estate agent, such as Francine.

Homes for Heroes, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, MN by Ruth Johnson and family members Kacy Mlenar, Helen Johnson and Mark Micek.

Let the outside in with all-season rooms

Many homeowners express interest in creating fewer barriers between the interior and exterior of their homes. Some may have backyards built for entertaining and want to facilitate the transition between the inside of the residence and the outside when guests arrive. In other instances, homes may back to a nature preserve that homeowners want to enjoy more readily. Whatever the reason for bringing the outside in, all-season rooms can serve as a welcoming bridge between indoor and outdoor spaces.

What is an all-season room?

Also known as a fourseason room, all-season rooms are specially engineered spaces that provide a connection to the outdoors no matter the season. They are like sunrooms, but climate-controlled so that they will be comfortable throughout winter, spring, summer, and fall.

What is the difference between a three-season room and an all-season room?

The biggest difference between these two spaces is the level of usage and the capacity of the room to be heated and cooled. Individuals who reside in climates with moderate yearround temperatures may get by with a three-season room. However, those who experience all four seasons may need a more insulated space to make the room usable throughout the year.

RAIN OR SHINE

Features of all-season rooms

One of the more notable features of an all-season room is an abundance of windows, which allow plenty of natural light to shine in. All-season rooms also can feature creature comforts like a reading nook, outdoor kitchen spaces and televisions. Retractable screens can be installed when privacy or shade is desired.

Maintaining a comfortable temperature

All-season rooms can be built with adequate thermal insulation and energy-saving features. Insulation will be installed in the walls and roof, and homeowners may have a choice of window ratings for efficiency. Some all-season rooms are specially equipped with HVAC systems that may or may not be tied in to the home’s general heating and cooling system. Some people use portable heaters or air conditioners to control the

temperature in all-season rooms. It’s best to speak with an all-season room contractor to identify heating and cooling needs.

How much does an allseason room cost? Prices vary by region and are contingent on the features homeowners desire. According to the outdoor resource Garden Center Care, a three-season room can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $50,000 to build. A four-season room can cost $20,000 to $80,000 to add. If there is an existing three-season room, it may be more affordable to upgrade the space into an all-season room, but an architect and contractor should inspect the space to determine the scope of the project.

All-season rooms can be an ideal addition to a property, providing extra space for entertaining or lounging and a connection to the outdoors.

“One Night In Memphis” will be performed at Clover School District Auditorium on Thursday, March 28 at 7 p.m. This is a tribute to: Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash. (Photo provided)

Relive the night when Rock and Roll Royalty jammed

“One Night In Memphis”, the official and number one tribute to Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash will be performed live at Clover School District Auditorium on March, 28th, at 7:00pm.

“One Night In Memphis” features over 90 minutes of pure rockabilly, country, gospel, and rock and roll in an authentic and ener-getic presentation featuring nationally known talent.

The show recreates the magical night of December 4th, 1956 when

Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash found themselves jamming at Sam Phillip’s Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Little did they know that their jam session was being recorded and preserved for all time, representing all the performers in their prime and the very best music of that time.

“One Night In Memphis” is created and directed by John Mueller from the highly acclaimed “Winter Dance Party” and has met with the same accolades and audience standing ovations. The San Fran-

cisco Examiner raves, “An Amazing Show.”

Join them for a great evening on Thursday, March 28, at 7:00pm. Tickets are $20.00 and will be available at the door the night of the performance.

For more information on this and other events, please call Clo-ver School District Auditorium at 803222-8018 or visit us on the web at www.clover.k12. sc.us/csda.

KM Gateway Trail 5K and 10-mile runs to be held March 23

Kings Mountain Gateway Trail will hold their 5K and 10-mile runs for March 23 this year at 807 S. Battleground Ave. in Kings Mountain.

The runs are professionally managed on the day of the run, on Facebook, and at the website www.runsignup.com.

Sponsors for the run receive a thank you letter and complimentary runner forms to give to runners. Complimentary run shirts are given to the runners, and nice trophies are awarded to winners of all ages and run categories. Run Shirts have the sponsor names on the back, and a large banner is placed with sponsor names on the front of the trail building. They are listed on the trail website

each year.

The trail opened in 2009 and began having annual 5K and l0-Mile runs for a fundraiser, exercise, and getting folks to Kings Mountain. Many local folks from a large area around Kings Mountain come to participate in a healthy event, giving runners something to look forward to and having lots of outdoor fun.

Kings Mountain Gateway Trail Director Shirley Brutkwo said, “2024 marks the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail’s 15th year, and all the runs have been a big success. We usually have anywhere between 180 to 230 runners participating and approximately 150 attending and watching the event.”

“It supports tourism and economic development for Kings

Mountain, the county, and the region. Sometimes we have out-of-town runners who stay at our local hotels,” she continued. “We have been able to give pottery leaves and beautiful pottery disks for trophies, which are very popular with our runners. We run in all weather and have sometimes had rain, snow, ice, and sunshine. We serve refreshments at the event and have a large tent to shelter runners if needed. All sponsor dollars are used to pay for the run expenses and to help with trail needs such as upkeep, etc.”

To sign up, visit www. runsignup.com. For more information, call 704-6853549 or 704-739-9663.

NEVER GIVE UP UNTIL THEY BUCKLE

TB Control Program protocols in managing investigations. While it is important for our community to be aware of this situation, a relatively small number of individuals are likely to have been exposed, and no one is at immediate risk of any health problems. TB is a disease that generally develops over weeks to months, and it is completely curable with medications.

Local public health officials have worked with GardnerWebb University faculty and staff to identify individuals who may have been exposed to the disease through close and prolonged contact with the positive individual. Everyone identified as a contact will be notified directly by phone, text or e-mail explaining the need to be tested for TB. The vast majority of employees and students will not be contacted, and do not need any testing or treatment for TB.

Only individuals who are contacted directly by university staff identifying them as a potential contact will need to be tested. The university is working directly with the Cleveland County Health Department to arrange TB testing on campus for all individuals identified as a contact at no cost to the individual.

“After consultation with the health department and thorough contact investigations, we are confident we have a good list of possible contacts. There is no need to test the entire university population,” said Director of Environmental and Occupational Safety for Gardner-Webb University, Barry Lane.

TB is transmitted when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. The germs are expelled into the air, and if a nearby person breathes them in, that person can become infected with TB.

“TB generally develops over weeks to months and is completely curable if detected early and treated properly with medication,” said DeShay Oliver, Deputy Health Director, Cleveland County Health Department. Symptoms include productive cough lasting longer than three weeks, unexplained fever, profuse sweating at night, appetite loss, unexplained weight loss, shortness of breath, chest pain, and excessive fatigue. However, all of these symptoms can be caused by many other diseases besides TB.”

A positive TB test result does not mean that a person is sick with TB or that he or she will develop TB disease. If an individual has a positive TB skin test, he or she will be referred to the Cleveland County Health Department for further follow-up.

To learn more about TB, visit https://www.cdc.gov/tb/topic/ basics/default.htm.

CCC’s Lineworker Academy Finalist for Bellwether Award

In February, Dr. Jason Hurst, president of CCC, Tony Fogleman, vice president of Workforce Development, Alan Qualls, Electrical Lineworker Academy coordinator, and Trustee Craig DeBrew traveled to the Bellwether College Consortium’s 30th Annual Community College Futures Assembly in San Antonio, Texas.

The group had the opportunity to showcase CCC’s Electrical Lineworker Academy on the national stage. Last November, the program was chosen as one of only ten finalists in the Bellwether Award’s Workforce Development category.

At the assembly in Texas, CCC’s team conducted a presentation to a jury of anonymous judges, fellow community college practitioners, and CEOs. The Academy did not win the overall award but being selected as a finalist places CCC’s program among the best of the best.

Cleveland Community College was a finalist for the 2023 Bellwether Award. Although they did not win, CCC’s program is now considered one of the best. Photo by Cleveland Community College.

The Bellwether College Consortium issued a call for nominations in the summer of 2023. From a large pool of submissions, finalists representing 18 states and 29 community colleges were selected to compete.

Beacons of Light

“Part 3 of Metaphors: Illuminating Truths in the Shadows Series”

and courage. Psalm 27:1 (ISV), “The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom will I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom will I be afraid?”

that did not please you. Help me to shine brightly for you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

DANYALE PATTERSON

In the Bible, light and darkness are often used as symbols to represent truth and falsehood, good and evil, understanding and ignorance. Also, light is used to symbolize God’s presence, while darkness represents sin. God is the ultimate source of light, illuminating the world and dispelling darkness. In Genesis 1:3-4, God created light and separated it from the darkness, establishing order and beauty in the world. The creation of light was a significant moment in the Genesis narrative, as it symbolizes God’s power to bring illumination and clarity to a dark and chaotic world. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of God’s light in our lives, providing strength

LIGHT OF THE WORLD

In John 8:12 (NLT) , Jesus declares, “ ...I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” This statement speaks to the transformative power that Jesus brings into our lives. He brings hope to the hopeless, comfort to the brokenhearted, and healing to the wounded soul. In a world filled with darkness and despair, Jesus stands as a beacon of light, offering us the promise of a new beginning and a brighter tomorrow. Through his teachings, his example, and his sacrificial love, he shows us the way to God and offers us redemption and eternal life.

CHILDREN OF LIGHT

As believers, we are called to be children of light. By walking in the light of Christ, we will overcome the darkness of sin and ignorance in our own lives. Prayer, study of God’s word, and fellowship with other believers help us grow in understanding and wisdom, causing us to shine brightly for all to see. Let us not be afraid of the darkness, but instead reveal His love and mercy to a world in need of redemption. Philippians 2:14-15 (NLT) “Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Father, I praise you as the God of light. There isn’t any darkness in you at all. Thank you for your word that is a lamp to my feet and light to my path. Forgive me for thoughts, words, and actions

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.

Simple ways to reduce risk of disease in your garden

No garden is immune to disease. Even the most attentive, experienced gardeners have had to confront disease in their gardens, which can lead to significant damage and potentially kill plants.

Various bacterial, fungal and viral diseases can affect gardens, and the University of Maryland Extension notes that fungicides, which are chemicals that destroy fungus, are only rarely recommended to combat disease. In fact, a proactive approach rooted in prevention is often the most effective way to reduce risk for disease in gardens.

• Choose the right varieties of plant. The UME notes that choosing disease-resistant varieties is an effective way to prevent disease in gardens. Gardeners who have confronted disease in their gardens in the past should do their best to identify which diseases were present and then choose plants that are considered resistant to those diseases. A local garden center professional can help gardeners who are uncertain about what to plant.

• Plant in the right spots. The choice

of where to plant is significant. Avoid wet areas with insufficient drainage. The home renovation experts at HGTV note that wet soil can decrease plants’ chances for survival because of excess water and a lack of oxygen. If the only spots available for planting tend to be especially wet, consider planting in raised beds or having a French drain installed. Learn how much light plants need prior to planting them. Some can thrive in shady areas, while others require ample sunlight each day.

• Plant at the right time. Planting too early when the soil is not yet warm enough can make plants vulnerable to disease by weakening their ability to fight. Use a soil thermometer to determine soil temperature and only plant when the conditions for planting are ideal.

• Harvest on time. When planting vegetables, it’s imperative that the vegetables are harvested on time. The University of Georgia Extension notes that fully mature vegetables left on the plant attract disease and are vulnerable to insect infestations.

• Control insect infestations. Certain insects can spread disease, so it’s important that gardeners learn to recognize which insects pose a threat to their plants. Speak with a local gardening center about invasive insects and how to address infestations without harming the plant.

As the planting season approaches, gardeners can take various steps to make their plants and vegetables less vulnerable to disease.

Fishing is a great sport that millions of men and women participate in each year. Most of the country boasts of its places to fish and each area has its specialty. For instance, my area is known for its lakes. Other areas are known for their rivers or streams, and some for their access to the ocean. There really is something for everyone. What I forget many times about fishing is how my success today is based on what has happened yesterday or even the past several days. It may be beautiful and sunny today but if the last several days were full of rain, it may be impossible to fish. This doesn’t affect the larger bodies of water as much, but it still makes a difference. The rivers and streams will always show the effect of the weather of a few days earlier. Every time I think about this truth, I am reminded of how important it is for me to do the right things today so I can be ready for what might happen in the future. So many people live their lives only reacting to the situations they find themselves in. In many cases this is no big deal, but in some it will surely bring the wrong reaction. The best way to ensure the right response is preparing for the action ahead of time. For instance, if you are fishing with the expectation of the possibility of an evening thunderstorm, you will be both prepared for it and not taken aback when it comes. Many times, in our spiritual lives we are thrown into a storm. The Bible is clear that these will come to all our lives from time to time. Thus, we need to expect them and be prepared for them as well. But how? We do this by knowing what the Bible says about these storms and by reading how God delivered His people in and through them. When we see how God responded then, we know how He will respond in our situation as well. As a result, we will not be blindsided by whatever comes our way. There is a Biblical principle here. It’s this. Regarding our natural life, “you reap what you sow.” If you sow into your life the truths about God now, you will reap the benefits of right reactions when you’re caught in the storm later. Don’t wait until you’re in the storm to look for needed help. Everything you need to prepare for is available now.

“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.”
