The Banker’s House is getting a new roof! This is the first complete renovation of the roof since the house was first constructed in 1874-75.
“It’s amazing that the original roof has lasted this long,” says Banker’s House Executive Director Carolyn Jackson. “This just shows the quality and durability that was crafted into every aspect of this house.”
Scaffolding went up on the historic house about a month ago and work has been ongoing since that time.
After a diligent search, the Banker’s House administration selected Gutter Guys Inc., based in Kings Mountain, NC, to oversee the roofing project.
“In today’s world, it’s unusual to find a company that’s passionate about their work,” says Banker’s House Advisory Council Member Tony Brooks. “Gutter Guys Inc. is such a company, and they have specialists that have accepted the unique challenges of this project: from metal and slate work to the intricate internal gutter system.”
The Banker’s House was built in the Second Empire Style, which was most popular between 1865 and 1900, having emerged out of the redevelopment of Paris under Napoleon III’s Second Empire – looking back to French Renaissance precedents. In fact, The Banker’s House has been dubbed as the “state’s most outstanding example of Second Empire Style.” This style is characterized by a strong central tower. elaborate ornamentation and a mansard roof.
A mansard roof is a distinctive type of roof characterized by its doublepitched design with four slopes – two on
each side of the roof. The lower slopes are steeper and often nearly vertical, while the upper slopes are more gently sloped. The lower slopes are typically punctuated by dormer windows, providing additional space and natural light to the attic or upper floor.
The term “mansard” is derived from the name of the 17th-century French architect François Mansart, who popularized this roofing style during the Second French Renaissance.
The Banker’s House is accepting donations for the roofing renovations.
The Banker’s House Embarks on Historic Roof Renovation
Titled “Raise the Roof for the Banker’s House,” the campaign welcomes contributions of any size to help contribute to this costly endeavor.
“We have been able to secure some grant money to help offset the cost somewhat, but, of course, repairing a historic and architecturally intricate roof such as this will require a great deal of funds,” says Jackson.
While the roof is repaired, tours and events at The Banker’s House are still going strong.
“We are still hosting our monthly
tours, held on the first Friday of each month, and we have several upcoming events such as our Big Hats & High Tea event on March 27 and, of course, our Kentucky Derby Party on May 4,” says Jackson. “Hopefully the scaffolding will be down by then, but even if it’s not, the party will go on!”

50 Years of Happiness
Martin Luther Pence III and Ruby Levine Sullens were married on March 30, 1974 and are celebrating 50 years of a wonderful marriage.
Bearing fruit through connection to the True Vine
Marty and Ruby became residents of Shelby NC in 1978 and it has since been their hometown. Marty was transferred to Eckerds in Shelby to assist in the opening of the new store where he was the manager. Ruby started work at First National Bank, and then eventually opened her own daycare called Country Day Children Care where she cared for several residents of Shelby. Marty and Ruby also had a store located at the former old Big Lots which was called Christmas around The World. After the closing of the store and daycare, Ruby went to work at Carolinas Medical Center where she was the Presidents Secretary for 20 years but has since retired. She was also able to do work for several lawyers in Shelby while working full time. Marty left Eckerds after 20 years as well and then went to work for Cardinal Health where he supplied many of the hometown drug stores. He has also now retired.
Marty and Ruby have two children, Michelle Harris, and Marty Pence IV who blessed them with 6 grandchildren that they spend most of their time with. Michelle is a now retired teacher and Marty owns his own company also in Shelby, Carolina Metal Crafters. The grandchildren are as follows Weston Bragg, Mackenzi Luckenbaugh, Tara Pence, Jackson Pence, Walker Pence, and Avery Pence. Michelle recently relocated to Myrtle Beach, while Marty IV is still a resident of Shelby along with his children.
(“4th and Final Part of Metaphors: Illuminating Truths in the Shadows Series”)
Have you ever been like me, trying to do things in your own strength instead of allowing God to help you? It didn’t work out too well in my life. Then, I called out for help, and the Holy Spirit gently convicted me to start with Him. In John 15:5 (NIV), Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” This analogy of the vine and branches beautifully illustrates the importance of staying connected to Christ in order to bear spiritual fruit. Apart from Christ, our lives become spiritually barren and unproductive.
INSEPARABLE
of allowing the life-giving sap of Christ to flow through us, transforming our character and enabling us to impact the world around us with the love and grace of God. When we remain connected to the true vine, we are empowered to bear fruit that not only blesses us individually but also enriches the lives of others and glorifies God. Psalm 1:3 (NIV) states, “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Father, I need you every second, minute, and hour. You are the reason I live, move, and have my very being. I am thankful that I have been engrafted into the family of God. I can immerse in the life-giving power of your word and Spirit. Forgive me for not always taking advantage of the opportunity to bask in your presence and
draw strength, guidance, and love from you. You are the Almighty God, and I will praise you forever and ever.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
CONNECTING
TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.
Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you!

The metaphor of the vine and branches signifies the close, inseparable bond between Christ and his followers. Just as the branches draw their life-giving nourishment from the vine, we derive our strength, sustenance, and vitality from our union with Christ. Remaining in Christ involves abiding in his teachings, yielding to the Holy Spirit, and maintaining a close, personal relationship with him through prayer and meditating on his word. As we remain connected to him, our lives are infused with his divine life and power, enabling us to bear the fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:2223).
LIFE-GIVING SAP
Ultimately, bearing fruit through connection to the true vine is a lifelong journey that requires intentionality, perseverance, and a deepening reliance on Christ. It is a process
Recently Marty had a serious stroke in 2020 and was thought not to survive, but through hard work and dedication he is doing amazingly well. Marty and Ruby continue to enjoy their time in Shelby, NC, but also enjoy traveling to their beach house in Myrtle Beach.
As their daughter and son, we are beyond blessed that they have had such an amazing marriage for 50 years. We are both very lucky to have been able to celebrate this time with them. We are very proud of all they have accomplished and look forward to spending the next 50 years with them!
Happy 50th Anniversary
Mom and Dad, we all love you and are very thankful for all that you have accomplished in your marriage and life.

GWU announces 2024 President’s Early Career Award
Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William M. Downs has announced the recipient of the President’s Early Career Award for 2024.
Dr. Wilson Hawkins, assistant professor of physics and director of the GWU Honors Program, is receiving the honor. Since Hawkins arrived at the University in 2021, he has demonstrated productivity in scholarship, creative discovery, and instruction that exceeds expectations. He also continues to pursue professional development and serve the campus community.
“Dr. Hawkins is off to a fast and impressive start as a member of the Gardner-Webb faculty,” Downs praised. “He exemplifies what we look for in our assistant professors — a clear commitment to instructional innovation and student success, a continuing dedication to advancing new knowledge in a disciplinary field, and a consistent record of collegiality as a member of the GWU community. Wilson Hawkins is broadly recognized for these and other qualities, and for that reason, I am delighted to celebrate him with this year’s Early Career Award.”
Hawkins is the seventh recipient of the Early Career Award, presented to full-time assistant professors who demonstrate outstanding performance in professional
development and excellence in service. The annual award includes an additional $1,000 in professional development funds for Hawkins to use during the 2024-2025 academic year.
“It is an honor to be nominated by my peers for this award,” Hawkins shared. “I can’t take sole credit for my work, as I have a wealth of ongoing support from students, colleagues, administrative assistants, and department chairs. These folks have treated me like family from the first day I stepped on cam-
pus. My first impressions of the faculty and administration were overwhelmingly positive and were the reason I chose to join the GWU team. This realized sense of community makes me proud to be a part of Bulldog Nation. Thank you to everyone who chose to lift me up with this recognition. I am truly blessed!”
In the Gardner-Webb Department of Natural Sciences, Hawkins teaches General Physics, University Physics, and Astronomy courses with accompanying laboratory components. He supervises
the Williams Observatory event schedule and equipment, manages both the Physics and Observatory budgets for the department and develops physics and astronomy curricula that maximize student engagement through university resources.
He received his bachelor’s in physics, master’s in applied physics, and Ph.D. in biomedical physics from East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, N.C. While at ECU, he was the lead physics tutor, conducted atomic physics experimental research in
the ECU Accelerator Lab, and was a graduate teaching assistant. He was nominated by College of Arts and Sciences
Dean Dr. Robert G. Prickett, Dr. David Campbell, associate professor and chair of the natural sciences department, and Dr. James Morgan, professor and chair of the Department of Psychological Science. All three mentioned his dedication to his students and their learning. Prickett wrote, “I’d like to begin by describing the ways that Dr. Hawkins demonstrates his excellence in teaching. Per his department chair, Dr. David Campbell, Dr. Hawkins’ courses are very popular: ‘He connects well with students, and his teaching is appreciated by students with a strong background in physics as well as those new to the concepts.’”
Prickett continued, “Dr. Hawkins, in the past year alone, has re-designed five of his courses around online open resource materials. Additionally, Dr. Hawkins advises and mentors students outside the classroom—this past year, mentoring three biology seminar students and 20 student poster presentations for regional and national honors conference presentations.”
Prickett commended Hawkins for his work as director of the University Honors Program, with approximately
200 honors students. One of Hawkins’ successful initiatives has been to collaborate with the Division of Student Success to offer the University’s first Living and Learning Community for honors students. Student Success plans to offer more Living and Learning Communities using this first one as a guide. Additionally, Hawkins mentored two honors students who won awards for their student research posters at the National Collegiate Honors Council meeting.
Prickett further recognized Hawkins for his diligence in pursuing research in spite of his commitments to the University’s Honors Program. Campbell noted that Hawkins has developed research techniques that have the potential for a wide range of applications in the investigation of materials (metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites).
Additionally, Prickett noted that Hawkins was a presenter at an international conference on accelerators in research and industry in Dallas, Texas. Last summer, Hawkins served as a research associate at the ECU Accelerator Laboratory, assisting in data acquisition, training a new cohort of Ph.D. students, and designing new standard operating procedures for accelerator hardware and software components.

Cleveland County Bass club fished their March tournament at Lake Murray on the 16th. With the weather being pretty on Saturday, there were lots of people fishing, plus the South Carolina high school kids were fishing their tournament there.
Every boat ramp area was pretty full. The water temp is coming up but the water color was like chocolate. milk.
The results are listed below:
• 1st place - Roger Beaver - 3 fish - 6.82 lbs.
• 2nd place - Robby Rush - 2 fish - 4.18 lbs.
• 3rd place - David Moss - 1 fish - 3.34 lbs.
David also took big fish honors with that fish.
• 4th place - Derek Barkley - 1 fish - 1.98 lbs.
Congratulations to each of you.
CCBA (High School and Jr. team) had an awesome time on Lake Norman, March 16th.
The highest finishing teams were on the Junior Series. Westin Hamrick and Austin Buttrick with a 3rd place finish.
In the High School Series, Jacob Webb, with an 11th place finish. Great job guys!
This youth group has 2 tournaments next month and that will end their season.
Thanks to the coaches and sponsors who help make sure the kids get to and from the tournaments and have all the help they need.
I am always looking for fishing reports to share on here. Please send information to me at mawlovesherbabies@gmail.com
I hope you all have a happy Easter. Tammy Melton

I hadn’t been to Lake Weiss in nearly twenty years. My memories there were always fond experiences. And the lure was always big crappie. Jonathon and I decided to meet there and spend some time hanging out and hopefully bringing home large messes of fish and new memories. And while the messes of fish only became a mess of fish, the new memories were more than expected. So much so, multiple return trips next year are already in the works. What’s the draw if the fishing was not great but only good? It is what draws people to any place. The people. While there, we met Terri and her son Robbie. They are the owners of Bay Springs Country Inn and Marina. Their hospitality, kindness, and conversation, let us know we had come to the right place. We’ll look forward to seeing these two again. We also met Tim the next morning. He would be our guide for two days. He found out quickly that we like to have fun and everyone’s expense on the lake, whether were catching fish or not. And he was the perfect partner for all our boating shenanigans. We’ll tag Tim again too. Why? Not because of the fish. We can catch fish with anyone. Again, the draw is always the people. You see, I’ve stayed in nicer places. I’ve eaten better food. I’ve fished out of more expansive boats. I’ve caught more fish. (even though all these things were good) But what will make me and others go back is not the boat or the electronics in the boat. Or the hotel. Or all the accommodations of the hotel. Or the services. Or the temperature. Or the talent. Or the lights. Or the production. Or the performance on the stage. Or the beautiful building. Or even the sermon. It’s the people. Be one.

Liberty Mountain hosts local auditions at the Joy Theatre
By Jeremy Trent Homesley Liberty Mountain:
The Revolutionary Drama returns to Kings Mountain this fall for its 10th year celebrating the southern battle that turned the tide of the American Revolution back toward victory. This exciting, actionpacked performance depends on professionals and locals alike to join together and recreate history. For four weekends leading up to the anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain, October 7th, the epic showdown between the American Patriot Militia and a larger force of British Loyalists under the fierce command of Major Patrick Ferguson explodes into life in downtown Kings Mountain at the Joy Theatre.
SUN DROP
Liberty Mountain depends on local support and talent to build a company capable of portraying real history for modern audiences. With upcoming local auditions, which will take place on April 6th and 7th at the Joy Theatre from 3-5 pm both days, we asked Liberty Mountain alumni Daylen Jones how it felt to play a character based on a real historical figure.
this March. Liberty Mountain was proud to represent Kings Mountain, North Carolina to the professional theater community that thrives in our region.
NEHI PEACH CHERRY SUN DROP
TIGER’S BLOOD GRAPE
“In the production, I play Captain Abraham Depeyster, an affluent commissioned officer stemming from a family of military service. He served as second in command to Major Patrick Ferguson in the Battle of Kings Mountain. For some, it may be difficult to imagine someone like me playing such a character. Playing alongside ‘The Bad Guy’ comes with having to justify the character’s actions, regardless of your own belief. Preparing for my role, I’ve had to dig deep and learn more about the history of the world that surrounds me. Which I will say has been the most enriching part of this ongoing journey.
Being a part of Liberty Mountain, working alongside the playwright (Bob Inman), and exploring the
city of Kings Mountain and the super-talented cast and crew has opened my heart and allowed me to consider new perspectives because this story is truly timeless. As I’ve mentioned, there are so many themes that are still relevant today. One is that we all have our own reasons for our actions that no one else is aware of. Everyone lives in their own personal reality filled with stories that we tell ourselves in order to navigate through life. Some might say that there’s three sides to every story; your side, my side, and the truth.”
The truth is, Daylen is an impeccable actor and playwright, and all-around true theater-professional, one of the many gifted people who have shared those gifts and talents with Kings Mountain and also gained valuable stage combat and educational theater experience in the process. We hope for a good turnout at local auditions. Local and regional actors will get a chance to meet and work alongside professionals recruited from all over America who participated in the Southeastern Theater Conference auditions in Mobile, Alabama,
Again, auditions happen April 6th and 7th from 3-5 pm both days at the Joy Theatre located at 202 S Railroad Ave, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Prepare a 45-60 second monologue, and if you would like to be considered for a choral role, have a 30-45 second song excerpt prepared to sing acapella.
We are also accepting Virtual Auditions, which can be submitted online directly through our website: https:// www.libertymountaindrama. com/ Information can also be found at www.kmlt.org or by visiting us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/LibertyMountainDrama
Please help us spread the word about Liberty Mountain’s local auditions.
Tell your family and friends, your local theater groups and playhouses, and especially anyone interested in living history, historical reenacting, or educational theater. Thank you for reading and your continued support. See you this fall!
