There are around 10,000 taste buds on the human tongue and when they get hit with Lickety Lew’s Boo Yow Sauce every one of them will stand up and take notice.
Wait a minute, you may say. What the heck is Boo Yow Sauce?
Boo Yow Sauce is the culinary condiment creation of Kings Mtn. entrepreneur Lewis Nance. It’s an all-purpose sauce that comes in three flavors- Original, Yella, and Spicy. According to Nance, it’s a perfect ingredient for any type of food from eggs to steaks and anything in between. “Food ain’t kickin’? Give it a lickin’” as the label says.
Nance explained how Boo Yow Sauce came into being.
“Some friends of mine and I used to host parties called Bash in the Pash in a field near Lake Montonio,” he said. “We sold tickets and would have hundreds of people attend. We cooked barbecue and needed a sauce, so I took a basic recipe and started tinkering.”
Many experiments later,
Nance found the perfect blend of base and spices and Boo Yow was born.
Demand was instantaneous.
“I made it for family and friends,” he said. “I also began selling it on Amazon.”
The success of Boo Yow inspired Nance to increase production.
“About five years ago, I contacted Bobbees Bottling in Louisburg, N.C., and gave them the recipe,” he said. “They have a modern bottling plant and make it there.”
Bobbees is well known in the food bottling business and prepares products for over 400 businesses. Boo Yow output is about 4,000 12-ounce bottles plus 600 gallons annually.
Boo Yow has made big inroads into the foothills and Southern Piedmont grocery and restaurant market. Eateries with Boo Yow on the table include Sammy’s Neighborhood Pub in Belmont and Dallas, Firestone Grill in Gastonia, Court St. Grill in Lincolnton, Cornerstone Pub and Grill in Charlotte, The Skillet in Kings Mtn., The Woodshed
Lickety Lew’s Boo Yow will make you say- wow!
Steakhouse in Stanley, and Boardwalk Billy’s near UNCCharlotte to name a few. Boo Yow can be found in many area Ingles grocery stores including ones in Lake Lure, Dallas, and Kings Mtn.
Sammy’s Belmont owner John Bailey explained his Boo Yow connection.
“Lewis has been a friend of mine for many years,” Bailey said. “My first experience with Boo Yow was at the Bash in the Pash events. The patrons at Sammy’s give it high acclaim. That, plus the fact that it’s locally made looks good in my business.”
Nance’s father, Ken, delivers Boo Yow in the company van. It’s wrapped with the Lickety Lew’s logo in bright colors and is easy to spot.
“People see the van and come up and buy bottles from me,” he
said. “It’s very popular.”
The bottom line on any food product is….”well, how do it taste?”
To answer this question about Boo Yow, this writer sampled all three versions using the semiscientific method. That protocol involved pouring some in a spoon and down the hatch. Here are the very subjective results: OriginalThis version has a tomatoey vinegary base with smoky notes and a bit of spiciness on the back end of the flavor profile. Its overall taste is very “North Carolina”.
Yella- This version takes the Original base and adds a mustardy twang. The flavor is somewhat similar to South Carolina mustard based BBQ sauce but it still has the unique Boo Yow taste.
Spicy- Adding habanero pepper sauce to the ingredient list gives this version more punch than
the other two. The pepperiness lingers in your mouth and on your tongue but it’s not as harsh as many other sauces of that type.
Nance has big plans for Boo Yow sauce.
“I hope to go national,” he said. “As soon as the weather improves, I hope to start a 30x50 building in Oak Grove.”
Well, there you have it. Lickety Lew’s Boo Yow sauce is a perfect example of how inspiration, experimentation, determination, and clever marketing of a quality product has created something that makes folks happy and puts a few dollars in the originator’s pocket. It’s an All-American success story in three flavors.

Shealth, and fertilizing can be
essential component of
process. Fertilizing a lawn can be intimidating. An array of fertilizers, with each seemingly designed to address a different issue, can make homeowners’ heads spin when visiting their local lawn and garden center. However, fertilizing is a very simple task that any homeowner can tackle. In fact, fears about fertilizing are often unfounded and can be overcome with some basic knowledge of the process.
• Identify which type of grass is in the yard. The home improvement experts at HGTV note that turfgrass is divided into two categories: coolseason grass and warmseason grass. A local lawn and garden center can help homeowners identify which type of grass is in the yard, and this often depends on location. Fescue, bluegrass and perennial ryegrass are some
examples of cool-season grasses, while Bermuda, bahia, St. Augustine, and zoysia are considered warm-season grasses. Identifying which type of grass is in the lawn is important because that will indicate when to fertilize. Cool-season grasses are typically best fertilized in early spring, while warmseason lawns can benefit from an application just before especially warm temperatures arrive.
• Survey the lawn to identify which spreader to use. A small yard or a thriving lawn with only a few bald or unsightly patches may not need a full application of fertilizer. In such instances, a hand spreader can suffice. For larger lawns and areas, a
The basics of fertilizing a lawn
broadcast spreader is the ideal option. Spreaders have multiple settings, and the fertilizer package will indicate which setting to utilize when using the product.
• Test the soil prior to purchasing fertilizer. The lawn experts at Pennington® note that a simple soil test can reveal soil pH and phosphorous and potassium levels. Soil tests can be purchased at most home improvement stores and lawn and garden centers, and they can help homeowners determine which fertilizer will most benefit their lawns.
• Water the lawn prior to fertilizing. The experts at Scotts® recommend a good watering a few days prior to fertilizing a
lawn. Such an approach ensures the soil is ready to accept the fertilizer once it’s applied.
• Follow the instructions carefully. Detailed instructions are typically provided on fertilizer product packaging. Once homeowners have identified and purchased the product they need, they can simply follow the instructions on the packaging, including how and when to water after application, which can make fertilizing less intimidating. Fertilizing in spring can help a lawn recover from the previous summer and winter, ensuring it’s lush and green when summer entertaining season arrives.

How to care for perennials
Perennials can add color and vibrancy to any garden. One of the more desirable components of perennials is that they come back year after year, meaning homeowners do not have to invest in a gardenful of new flowers every year. That can add up to considerable savings. Perennials often form the foundation of beautiful gardens.
Annuals only grow for one season, produce seeds and then die. However, perennials die back to the ground every autumn and their roots survive the winter. So the plants reemerge in the spring, according to The Farmer’s Almanac. Some perennials are short-lived, meaning they will come back a few consecutive years; others will last for decades.
Though planted perennials require less maintenance than annuals, they are not completely maintenance-free. Certain care is needed to help perennials thrive, and that starts with the soil.
In fact, soil is the single most important factor for growing healthy plants.
Penn State Extension says most perennials grow ideally in well drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. In addition, organic matter can improve soil texture and water-holding ability. When including perennials in the garden, make sure you wait for the right time to plant them.
spring or fall. Perennials come as container-grown perennials, which already have been established in the soil. Bare-root perennials are just roots that are often packed in peat moss. In order to plant bare-root perennials, soak the roots in water for several minutes before gently planting in the ground, indicates the howto resource Tip Bulletin.
Perennials should be watered deeply, especially during the first growing season. However, the soil should never be overly dry or wet. Most perennials do not need to be fertilized heavily. A single application in the spring typically is all that’s needed.
Care along the way can include deadheading spent flowers so that plants can use their energy on seed production and reblooming. Perennials should be divided when they grow large, every three to four years when the plants are not in bloom. Perennials
produce fewer flowers or may look sickly when the time has passed to divide them. Early spring often is a good time to divide perennials, advises The Farmer’s Almanac.
A thick layer of mulch can help perennials to overwinter successfully.
Perennials planted in containers will need to be transplanted into the garden before it gets cold because most containers cannot thoroughly insulate perennial roots.
Apart from these strategies, perennials pretty much take care of themselves. As long as sunlight requirements match plant needs, the perennials should thrive.

GARY MILLER
In my area flea markets are more popular than the mall. On any given Saturday or Sunday cars and trucks will line the highways. They are full of people who are willing to walk down dimly lit paths where vendors sell everything from hamburgers to hardware. The prices at these places are always negotiable and tax is always included – or maybe even disregarded. These places have always given common folk opportunities to take what they have and sell it or trade it for something they want more. It’s as much of a gathering place as anything. When I was young, I had a friend who was a wholesale knife dealer. He would always let me know when he came through town so I could meet him and buy his knives. I usually came away with ten or fifteen that I could use for trade bait. In those early years I learned to trade the hard way; usually coming away with something worth less than I paid for it. Since those days I have bought many knives, guns, hardware, and hamburgers at my local flea market. I probably lost a lot of money but gained a lifetime of lessons and memories. I remember taking my son to his first gun and knife show. This atmosphere was familiar to me but not to him. He had never been to a store where the price wasn’t really the price and where the guy selling something was just as interested in buying something. He had a good time. Days like those continue to remind me how important it is for me to pass down some traditions to my children even if those traditions will eventually be lost by a new generation. And some of them need to be. That’s the problem with most of us as we get older; we think tradition is always truth. In fact, sometimes we fight over traditions more than we do for truth, especially in our churches. As a result, we lose the next generation. Truth is never negotiable. It can stand alone or be housed in a church, castle or correctional institute. It is truth. Its author is God. It does not change. Tradition is negotiable. It is man-made. It can change. And if it hinders people from getting to the truth, it must change.
Did you know...
Are you building your life on truth or on tradition? Are your greatest convictions based on truth or tradition? The best way to answer these questions may not be to ask yourself but your children. They will either see a truth that is alive and good for all generations or one that has been replaced by the dead traditions of days past.
pring cleaning is a ritual in many homes, though some might be forgetting to address an area of their homes that can be especially vulnerable to insect infestations. According to PestWorld. org, kitchen cabinets and pantries used to store spices and baking items, such as flour, can make for inviting hideouts for various types of pests. These unwelcome guests include beetles, Indian meal moths and ants. To remedy this issue or prevent insects from becoming an issue, discard stale spices or dated baking items. Once such items have been removed from the cabinets and pantry and discarded, wipe down the interior of the spaces before installing fresh shelf paper. If the critters didn’t make their presence known in

the cabinets, that doesn’t mean they haven’t made your kitchen home over the winter. Some might have opted to spend their winters behind appliances, including the stove and the refrigerator. As a result, it’s best to pull these appliances off the wall each spring, sweeping or vacuuming the dust and crumbs you find before mopping the floors.
How to create more privacy on your property
An inviting backyard can serve as a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. After a long day at the office or an exhausting day spent transporting kids to and fro, it’s hard to resist the allure of a peaceful outdoor space in which to unwind.
Privacy is a key component of any backyard
oasis. Some homes may be so remote that privacy isn’t an issue. But many suburban homeowners recognize they might need to tweak their landscapes if they hope to create a private oasis outside.
Fencing or planting?
Most homeowners looking to create more
privacy on their property will have to choose between fencing and planting. Fencing provides immediate privacy because, once it’s installed, no one can see into the yard. Fencing also doesn’t require watering or other immediate upkeep, which will be necessary when planting to ensure tree roots can establish themselves.
Arbor Day Foundation® notes that the Leyland cypress is popular for hedges and boundaries, likely because a typical tree reaches a mature height of 60’-70’ and can spread as wide as 25’. The Leyland cypress grows fast, which may appeal to homeowners who don’t want to wait to establish privacy.
But planting has its benefits as well. Planting for privacy is essentially creating a living fence that can grow over time and provide even more privacy as trees reach maturity. Plants also tend to be less costly than fencing. The home renovation experts at BobVila.com estimate that fencing projects typically cost between $1,667 and $4,075. However, fencing projects can cost considerably more than $4,000, especially for homeowners with large properties they want to enclose. Large, mature trees can be expensive, though it’s unlikely they will cost as much as fencing. In addition, fencing requires more maintenance and will potentially need to be replaced, while native trees won’t require much upkeep and can last for generations.
Planting
• Green Giant Arborvitae: There are different varieties of the arborvitae, but the Green Giant tends to be the go-to option for privacy. The ADF notes that Green Giants will grow up to three feet per year until they reach maturity, providing a fast-growing option for privacy planters. The Green Giant can spread as wide as 20 feet at maturity, which is another attribute that makes it so popular among homeowners desiring privacy.
Homeowners who choose to plant for privacy will next have to decide which type of plants to add to their properties. Evergreens provide year-round privacy because they don’t shed their leaves, so these are the ones most often chosen when creating a living fence. A number of varieties of evergreen trees can do the job, but it’s important that homeowners consult with a landscape architect prior to choosing trees so they can ensure the trees will thrive when faced with the growing conditions on their properties. During such a consultation, homeowners may discuss the following popular privacy trees.
• Leyland cypress: The
• Eastern White Pine:
The ADF notes that the eastern white pine, which can reach heights as high as 80 feet, is favored in spacious yards. That’s likely due to its height and its potential spread, which can reach 40 feet. Homeowners who choose the eastern white pine might like it for its resemblance to a Christmas tree, and in fact it is widely used for that purpose. The privacy provided by the eastern white pine is significant, but it might be best suited to especially large properties.
Whether it’s fencing or planting, homeowners have many options to consider as they seek to create more privacy on their properties.

Revitalize your landscape on a budget
Many homeowners think they have to spend tons of green to get green in their landscape, but that isn’t necessarily so. Homeowners can improve their landscapes without digging themselves into financial holes. These strategies can help anyone save some cash and still end up with attractive gardens and more.
• Use stones or gravel for a walkway. If commercially installed pavers or cement walkways are not within your budget, there are some affordable alternatives.
Flagstone or individually purchased and spaced pavers and pea gravel can be used to create pathways.
Some construction sites even offer free stones when asked. Soften the look with moss or other plants on the perimeter.
• Remove some lawn. Lawns can require hours of upkeep that may involve the application of expensive fertilizers and weed-killing products that are not always so eco-friendly. Reduce the size of a lawn by putting in a mixed planting bed of
perennials or ornamental grasses, or use landscape fabric and mulch.
• Look for free mulch.
Municipal recycling centers may offer residents access to free mulch made from grinding up leaves, branches and other plant debris collected throughout the town. Simply bring a few containers to the recycling center and spread the mulch for an ornamental look or to insulate landscapes over winter and protect against weeds.
• Repurpose old items into planters. Old wheelbarrows, barrels, watering cans, and other items can be repurposed into container gardening vessels. Figure out if items marked for the garbage bin can be incorporated into garden features instead.
• Invest in plants that are easy to propagate. Perennials are the gardener’s friend when it comes to saving money. These plants sprout anew each year, and many, such as sedum, catmint, ferns, hostas, and black-eyed Susans, can propagate by division. Figure out
the best times of year to divide the plants and start growing them in individual containers before planting the sturdy new shoots in the ground. A single variety of plants grouped together in mass plantings is affordable and easy.
• Shop end-of season sales. Garden centers may begin to make room for holiday items come the fall. Take advantage of reduced costs on remaining plants and landscape accessories during this time of year. Plants can be covered or allowed to thrive indoors until they can be planted in the spring.
• Pool your resources. Homeowners planning on a big landscaping or revitalization project may want to speak with neighbors to see if they’re interested in doing the same. Contractors guaranteed business from a few homes in the same neighborhood may be willing to negotiate lower prices for the volume of work on things like driveway repaving, deck- or fencebuilding, or installation of paver patios.
Some handy ideas can help homeowners transform landscapes without spending too much.
Did you know...
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegar-soaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Pray without ceasing. – I Thessalonians 5:17
Many are relieved that the cold winter season is finally over. The winter season in our lives is often characterized by difficulties, obstacles, or periods of stagnation. It’s a time for introspection, resilience, and patience, as we navigate through difficult circumstances and work towards overcoming obstacles. Now we are in the spring season. It is a season that many people look forward to because of the blossoming flowers and change from the bleak, chilly winter season. Spring symbolizes new beginnings, shedding old habits, and embracing change.
Song of Solomon 2:11-1 (NLT) says, “Look, the winter is past, and the rains are over and gone. The flowers are springing up, the season of singing birds[a] has come, and the cooing of turtledoves fills the air.”
As we welcome the season of spring, we are reminded of the importance of moving forward, evolving, and blossoming into our best selves. But we are not alone in this endeavor, God wants to do new things in our lives. He doesn’t want us to be stagnated or stuck in the past. Isaiah 43:18-19 (AMP) says, “Do not remember the former things, or ponder the things of the past. Listen carefully, I am about to do a new thing, now it will spring forth; will you not be aware of it? I will even put a road in the wilder-
ness, rivers in the desert.” As we reflect on these powerful words, we are reminded that God is always working behind the scenes to bring about new beginnings in our lives. Just as the spring season brings forth new life and growth, God wants to do the same in our hearts and minds. Let’s open our hearts and minds to the new things that God wants to do in us and through us. We should strive to be aware of His presence and His guiding hand, leading us towards a brighter and more fulfilling future. We can trust in His plan and have faith that He is doing a new thing in us.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Father, no matter where I am in the season of my life, I trust you and I know that you are there with me. Thank you for the divine plan and purpose for my life. Help me to discern the different seasons in my life so that I can keep moving forward. Lord, I praise you for all the great things you have in store
for me. Forgive me for not always embracing the new things you want to do. I ask that you would strengthen me so I will have courage to be, do and have what you have planned for me In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. By dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying, you can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God.
