Shelby’s American Legion World Series is a home run with baseball fans

Baseball and Shelby go together like livermush and a cathead biscuit. In fact, it’s said the first documented baseball game in Shelby was staged in 1903 and the first semipro team was organized in 1904 with both teams playing their games at a field near the old Southern Railway Station in downtown Shelby.

surface.

The series brings a beaming smile to everyone who attends.

“This is a fabulous, feelgood, community event.”

That’s how Shelb y ALWS chairman Eddie Holbrook said the late NC House Representative Dr. Jack Hunt described the event to him several years ago and the statement perfectly sums up the atmosphere and impact the games and associated activities creates.

The series pits the champion teams from the American Legion’s eight national districts against each other in an elimination tournament of fifteen games. The “Stars” teams represent the Northeast, Southeast, Central Plains, and Western districts. The “Stripes”

teams represent the Mid-Atlantic, MidSouth, Great Lakes, and Northwest districts.

The ALWS dates to 1926 but it wasn’t until 2008 that Shelby first hosted the event. That tantalizing taste kicked off a burning desire in Shelby movers and shakers to have the games become a permanent fixture. Shelby ALWS marketing and communications specialist Adrian Hamrick explained what happened.

“In 2010 we took two busloads and four carloads of people to ALWS headquarters in Indianapolis to lobby for the series,” she said. “Everyone wore orange jerseys. It was a sea of orange.” (Orange and blue are the colors of Shelby’s own Post 82 team.)

The campaign worked and Shelby was selected as the 2011 site and has held that honor ever since.

The baseball games are the pivot point around which an impressive array of other activities swirl.

The week kicks off on Saturday, August 10 when the American Legion World Series Festival (formerly the 7th Inning Stretch Festival) revs up from 10am to 10pm in Uptown Shelby. The buildings will reverberate with the sounds of country music crooner Craig Morgan and Tik Tok star Cooper Alan. Other musical merriment will include the Vinyl Junkies Band.

Another series sidenote is the Little Miss American Legion World Series Pageant. Also, special guest Miss North Carolina Taylor Loyd will sing the National Anthem before the Championship Game at 7pm on August 20.

Military and first responder personnel will get a nod during the series. Each game day will feature a flyby of three vintage T-28 Trojan military aircraft from Georgia-based Museum of Flight Warbirds. The Golden Knights US Army Parachute Team will jump at 6:10pm prior to Game 9 on August 17 and again at 5:30 before the Championship Game on August 20. The Blackman High School JROTC Blaze Battalion from Murfreesboro, Tenn. will post the colors before each game. Sunday,

August 18 will see first responders honored during Games 10, 11, and 12 during the Salute to Healthy Living Day.

Other special days are Senior Citizens Day on August 15, Salute to Academics Day on August 16, and Youth Athletic Day on August 19.

The ALWS is a huge success for Shelby and the entire region. According to Hamrick, folks come from as far away as Hawaii to attend. Area hotels and restaurants enjoy a big surge of business and local attractions such as the Earl Scruggs Center see increased patronage and visitation. Ticket sales are huge. According to Hamrick, 2023 saw 122,931 tickets sold. The previous year, 2022, had sales of 132,804 tickets.

“In an independent professional study commissioned by the Cleveland County Board of

Commissioners regarding Economic Impact by Travel Tourism event, the American Legion World Series ranked number one in Economic Impact for Cleveland County at approximately $5 million,” Hamrick said. “Based on this impact, the projected five-year growth and expansion plans we have in place would have an impact of $30 million for Cleveland County.”

A side note is the series is self-sustaining.

“It pays its own way,” said Holbrook.

The future of the ALWS in Shelby looks bright. Holbrook, Hamrick and a crowd of over 900 volunteers work tirelessly to make the event run smoothly.

“No job is too small,” Hamrick says. “We want to elevate and grow it. Elevate is our keyword.”

Sabbath Rest

(5th & Final

Part of the “REST” series)

DANYALE PATTERSON

Throughout the Bible, we see examples of rest being emphasized as a vital part of our relationship with God. The Sabbath was a day set apart from the rest of the week, a day for rest and rejuvenation. It was a time to think about God’s goodness and provision and to recharge for the week ahead. But rest isn’t just about taking a break from work or responsibilities; it’s also about trusting in God’s sovereignty. When we rest, we’re acknowledging that God is our Rock, our Refuge, and our Provider. We’re saying, “I trust that You will take care of me, even when I’m

not working.” Psalm 91:1-2 (AMP) says, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will remain secure and rest in the shadow of the Almighty [whose power no enemy can withstand]. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust [with great confidence, and on whom I rely]!” Spiritual Rejuvenation When we rest in God, we’re allowing Him to refresh and restore us. In Psalm 23:1-3 (AMP), David writes, “The LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], shall not want. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” Our good Father by His Holy Spirit leads us to pastures

where the grass is lush and the air is fresh, free from the worries and stress of the world; He quenches our thirst and soothes our soul, providing a sense of peace and tranquility.

Reflection

In addition, rest is also a time for reflection and introspection. When we take time to rest and reflect on God’s Word, we’re reminded of His faithfulness and provision. The Bible is full of examples of people who rested and were blessed by God as a result. Abraham rested in the promise of God’s plan for his life (Hebrews 11:8-12), Moses rested in God’s guidance (Exodus 14:13-14), and Paul rested in the Father’s plan even in hardship (Acts 20:22-24). Let’s follow their examples and allow God to strengthen, comfort, and instruct us as we bask in his Presence.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You today acknowledging that You are my Shepherd, Savior, and Rock. I

confess that sometimes I try to handle things on my own.

Forgive me for my pride. Help me to trust in You. Fill me with the Holy Spirit, and cause your word to burn within my soul. May my soul rest in You today, In Jesus’ name we pray - Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you! Contact her at www.danyale. com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her for speaking engagements.

Jesus wept. John 11:35

This time of year, the water levels in the rivers are naturally low. Usually, the rains are of the thunderstorm variety and are not long, ongoing, soakers. This can make fishing harder but more centralized. Basically, find the areas that produce the most oxygen and more fish will congregate there. Another benefit of low water is that it exposes oddities that one normally doesn’t see during other seasons.

Congratulations to CCC's Practical Nursing Graduates

Just the other day, my wife and I were floating the river. No fishing. Just floating. Since she has only recently been trying this, she has discovered sights she has never seen. It has made me look more intense at the things I may have overlooked. One of the views came just the other day. I noticed a tree that had succumbed to erosion. It had fallen and was lying parallel to the bank. Not upright. Not growing tall. Not reaching to the heavens. Nope. Laying on its side. And yet, as I looked closer, I discovered branches with full foliage. Yep. Fallen, and yet finding a way to keep a foothold in its foundation, long enough to produce a harvest of hope. I immediately thought of you. You who have fallen. You who have lost most of your foundation. You who are parallel with the grave that’s trying to suck you in. You who are holding on for dear life.

You see, sometimes your greatest service to God will be when all you have is your most basic belief. It will be when what you’re holding on to is as fragile as it’s ever been. Sometimes your greatest ministry will be when you have fallen, are laying on your side, and have only a small spray of fruit to show for your faith. You see, what brought my attention to this tree was not its abundance of fruit as it stretched its perfect limbs toward the heavens, but what captured my attention was how it was eking out fruit while in its most vulnerable position. You see, it grabs no one’s attention when you’re doing things as they are supposed to be done. But when God brings water from rock, or fruit from a tree that has been cut low or hope from a man that has been leveled by an unsuspected blow, an unbelieving world takes notice. You see, the mighty oak beside this sickly sycamore garnered no praise. But this one seemingly lifeless and battered tree just might bring hope to thousands of readers. And that each one may be encouraged to realize that as long as there’s one root stuck deep in a good foundation, God can bring about noticeable and productive fruit that can give hope to everyone who floats by.
