FRIED CHICKEN TENDERS

Servings: 4
Oil of choice, for frying
1/2 stick butter
2 eggs
2 cups milk
3 pounds chicken breast, cut into strips
2 cups flour

Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste

Fill Dutch oven or large frying pan halfway with oil and butter; heat over medium heat.

In separate bowl, mix flour, barbecue seasoning and mesquite seasoning. Add salt and pepper, to taste.
Remove 4-6 chicken strips from milk mixture and cover completely in flour mixture.
Drop pinch of flour in hot oil; if it crackles, it’s hot enough. Once hot, fry battered chicken 4 minutes then, using tongs or fork, turn over and fry 4 minutes. When done, chicken will be golden and almost float. Remove from frying pan and repeat with remaining chicken.

Embracing Transition
Whether it’s a new job, a move to a different city, or even a shift in personal relationships, we all find ourselves navigating change at various times. Transition can feel daunting and exciting, but it’s important to remember that it’s also a beautiful opportunity for growth. As I reflect on my personal experiences, I’m reminded of the wisdom in Ecclesiastes 3:1 (AMP) which says, “There is a season (a time appointed) for everything and a time for every delight and event or purpose under heaven.” This scripture beautifully captures the essence of transitions in our lives. Just like the seasons change—spring brings new blooms, summer offers warmth, autumn teaches us to let go, and winter encourages rest—our lives go through different phases, each with its purpose.
Mixed Emotions
Transition often comes with a mix of emotions. For many of us, the unknown can be intimidating. What if things do not go as planned? What if I fail? These ques-
tions can creep into our minds like uninvited guests.
However, I urge you to remember what Isaiah 43:1819 (NIV) says: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
Here, God reminds us that while change can be unsettling, it also paves the way for something new and exciting. As we embark on these new journeys, it’s important to acknowledge and embrace the feelings that come with transition. If you’re worried or anxious, don’t ignore those emotions. Instead, lean into them. Talk to friends or family, or seek guidance through prayer.
Resilience
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned during transitions is the power of resilience. Each challenge presents an opportunity to grow stronger, more capable, and more open to the possibilities ahead. Romans 5:3-4 (NLT) says, “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. ” These moments of dif-
ficulty shape us, preparing us for what God has in store.
PRAY THIS PRAYER:
“Father, I praise you as the Sovereign God. You know all things. You are the author and finisher of my faith. Here I go again with another transition, another change. I ask that you would lead and guide me by your Spirit. Thank you for sending your angels to go before me and straighten every crooked path. I am not alone because you promised you wouldn’t leave or forsake me. In Jesus’ name - Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

Foothills Conservancy of N.C. Purchases 117 Acres Adjoining Johns River and Wilson Creek Confluence
On August 29 Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina (FCNC), a nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural resources and scenic beauty of Western North Carolina, purchased 117 acres today adjoining the confluence of Wilson Creek and the Johns River in Caldwell County.
With the completion of this acquisition, FCNC has permanently protected over 1,777 acres in the Wilson Creek and Johns River watersheds. FCNC also participated in the process and negotiations leading to the establishment of the nearby 6,480-acre Johns River Game Land, administered by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
The 117-acre property includes frontage along the Johns River and a large tributary stream, as well as forested uplands offering views of the Wilson Creek Wild and Scenic River Area, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and other conservation lands along Wilson Creek.
The transaction was made possible through a combination of FCNC’s own revolving land acquisition funds and donations from conservationists Brad and Shelli Stanback, Martha and Chip Whitfield and Tim Sweeney. A private conservation buyer simultaneously purchased an additional 77 acres of the tract, and will work with FCNC to place a conservation easement on most of their land at a later date, which will lead to the permanent protection of the entire 194-acre parcel.
“When Foothills Conservancy first learned about this important tract of land on the real estate market, we knew we had to act quickly to raise the funds for a conservation acquisition,” said Tom Kenney, Land Protection Director for FCNC. He added, “Our conservation-minded partner in this project was interested in owning a portion of the property and permanently protecting that area with a conservation easement in the near future. The partnership lowered the overall project cost for FCNC and allowed our land trust to raise the funds necessary to make the purchase possible.”
“Conserving this prominent land along the Johns River and its rugged, scenic forested slopes at the confluence with Wilson Creek in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains helps shelter native fish, rare freshwater mussels and other animals of conservation concern that depend on high-quality habitat and well-vegetated streamside buffers,” continued Kenney. “This acquisition would not have happened without crucial support from some key Foothills Conservancy supporters.”
The property features a 0.7-mile stretch
along the Johns River that is designated by the State of North Carolina as “High Quality” for “Water Supply IV” uses, which highlights this property’s importance to local ecosystems and water resources.
The Johns River originates in Blowing Rock, on a 326-acre tract of land that FCNC acquired for permanent conservation in February 2024. From its inception point to the confluence with Wilson Creek, much of the Johns River flows through Pisgah National Forest. It is a vital freshwater source for the region, being one of the largest and lengthiest tributaries of the Catawba River in its mountainous headwaters. The river is designated by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program as a Significant Aquatic Habitat or Natural Area due to its natural communities, at-risk freshwater mussels, noteworthy native fish and crayfish species and high quality scenic vistas accessible to the public for paddling, wading and fishing.
The context of the property among nearby conservation land is significant. Across the Johns River from FCNC’s acquisition is a small N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission tract on Playmore Beach Road. The property is also 1,800 feet south and downstream from FCNC’s existing 93-acre preserve on Wilson Creek, acquired in 2022. Downstream in Burke County lies over 6,400 acres of the Johns River Game Land, administered by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, further emphasizing the importance of this conservation effort.
“We are thrilled to be able to protect such a significant and biologically diverse area,” said Andrew Kota, Executive Director of FCNC. He continued, “Our hope is that by working with other private landowners in the region, we can create a continuous corridor of protected lands between our new conservation acquisition and other protected land in the immediate vicinity, including our 93-acre preserve upstream on Wilson Creek.”
Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina is a nationally accredited regional land trust that inspires conservation in Western North Carolina by permanently protecting land and water for the benefit of people and all living things. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Foothills Conservancy has permanently protected over 70,600 acres across eight counties: Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Cleveland, Lincoln, McDowell, and Rutherford, and in three major river basins: the Broad, Catawba, and Yadkin. DANYALE PATTERSON
By Gary Miller
My ground blind leaks. Yours does too. Yeah, I know you have the top-of-the-line, largest, most cushy, made-of-the-bestwaterproof-material-blind money can buy. I’m sure it’s nice. But it leaks. It may not leak as much as mine. It may not leak in the same places as mine. But it leaks. Those leaks may not show up until the hardest rain, but, you know, it leaks. I’m sorry. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. You can still claim superiority in ground blind wars. But it leaks. And sometimes those leaks are all you can think about. I sat in the rain, bored from seeing no deer, and from having no cell signal in order to keep my mind occupied. So, my leaks became my obsession. What I discovered was there is one thing that causes every blind to leak. It’s not faulty material or holey seams. It’s not the lack of sealant. It’s windows. Yes, windows -those things that we actually can’t do without if we want to hunt. It’s the difference between a tent and a hunting blind. It’s those things that are necessary if we are going to accomplish what we go to accomplish. So, dealing with leaks are just something we have to endure if we are going to get those opportunities. And it’s odd that as I write, I feel like I’m talking about something else. I get a punch in the side telling me, “Gary, you really can’t reach those people that I need you to come in contact with, if you’re in a tent and not a blind.” I get another punch that tells me not to think my sins are any better than the sins of the worst individual. A leak is a leak. A sin is a sin. I get yet another jab that reminds me to not be so concerned about getting a little world on you. Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world. And if that’s not enough jabs and pokes, one last somewhat audible admonition tells me, “Gary, have you noticed this whole conversation has been about YOU and YOUR blind, and YOUR obsession with it? Doesn’t that sound just a tad bit selfish? I don’t think this is included in the ‘Love God with all your heart, and your neighbor as yourself’ lesson I gave.” So, I regroup, and rearrange my seat so my thoughts are on more important things and so that my view is of what’s outside, where I’m supposed to be looking anyway.

Who's listening to you in the dark?
By Loretta Cozart
That smart device sitting on the counter, on your desk, or by the coffee table offers instant convenience, diligently waiting for your next voice command. Products like Amazon Echo, Google Nest Hub, Apple HomePod, and the Nest Thermostat connect to your Wi-Fi and Internet to provide handsfree, voice-activated control over appliances, streaming systems, realtime notifications, and online searching. However, these devices also have the ability to collect and share what they hear with others, whether you are speaking directly to them or not. This information can be invaluable to service providers and strategic to advertisers, pollsters, and product developers. How this information is leveraged can present both positive and negative outcomes for the consumer. For some, these devices promise to deliver more intuitive support and assistance to the user when needed. For others, this technology severely threatens a per-
son's privacy.
Companies are keen to understand what potential customers are interested in, use regularly, or search for online. By leveraging this information, they can tailor and deliver ads and messages for products or services that closely align with each user's interests. Essentially, companies aim to listen to and respond to their users' needs. The more these companies know about you, the more efficiently they influence consumer decisions and promote their products and services.
Over 110 million virtual assistant users in the United States are integral to many smart homes. Additionally, nearly a third of U.S. households own a connected device such as a smart speaker, including those operating with Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, Google's Home, and other voice interfaces.
As voice-controlled devices continue to saturate the market, companies are searching for more elaborate ways to take advantage of the new technology.
According to a report by 404 Media, marketers at Cox Media Group (CMG), a major player in the media industry, proposed this concept to prospective advertising partners. The tech news outlet recently acquired a November 2023 pitch deck from CMG, outlining its "Active Listening" service, which leverages smart devices like smart devices, phones, speakers, and TVs to deliver targeted advertising.
"What would it mean for your business if you could target potential clients who are actively discussing their need for your services in their day-to-day conversations?" reads the beginning of the CMG sales pitch. "No, it's not a Black Mirror episode - it's Voice Data, and CMG can use it to your business's advantage."
"Creepy? Sure. Great for marketing? Definitely," the CMG sales pitch says.
In its September article, Mashable.com, a leading online technology news and information service, described how savvy companies are exploring how this technology
could be used, saying, "Internet users have long speculated that Big Tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook-owner Meta were eavesdropping on them. We have evidence that CMG's marketing team is promoting this type of service to advertisers. As 404 Media points out, CMG has maintained current or former partnerships with all four Big Tech companies."
When approached by Mashable.com for comment, Meta, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, each company provided a statement denying working with CMG to target advertising in this way.
"All advertisers must comply with all applicable laws and regulations as well as our Google Ads policies, and when we identify ads or advertisers that violate these policies, we will take appropriate action," a Google spokesperson said in a statement provided to Mashable. com.
It remains to be seen whether all companies will take a similar stance against leveraging data
collection obtained from smart devices.
For consumers already using voice-controlled devices, like Amazon's Alexa, Google Home, and Apple's Siri, operating in their homes and workplaces, several key concerns remain:
• Constant Listening: These devices are always listening for their "wake word" (e.g., "Hey Siri" or "Alexa"), which means they can inadvertently record conversations.
• Data Storage: Voice recordings are often sent to the manufacturer's servers for processing. This data can be stored for varying lengths of time, potentially indefinitely, unless users manually delete it.
• Human Review: Some companies have admitted that employees may listen to recordings to improve the service. This practice raises concerns about who has access to your private conversations.
• Security Risks: The vast amount of data these devices collect makes them attractive targets for hackers. Unauthorized access could lead to the
misuse of personal information.
• Privacy Policies: It's crucial to read and understand the privacy policies of these devices. They often outline how your data is used and stored and who can access it.
To mitigate these concerns, users can take several steps:
• Regularly review and adjust privacy settings.
• Delete old recordings.
• Use strong, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication.
• Be mindful of where you place these devices, especially in sensitive areas like bedrooms or offices.
As smart device technology evolves, consumers and companies will continue to weigh the risks and advantages these tools present.
