ROBERT WHITLOCK 1918 T 2OO5 AN APPRECIATION obert was 87 when he died and I I had known him for more than half of his life. We grew up together at Kings Heath when Lodges were two and three times bigger than
think
they are today and there was quite a keen
rivalry between Masefield Lodge
and
Lechmere Volunteer at that time.
Robert lived in a house on the perimeter
of Kings Heath Masonic Hall with Janet and their two children, Brian andChristine. It was a great sorrow when Janet died in 1966 and Robert was to gain increasing solace and friendship from Freemasonry in the ensuing years. We both flourished under the leadership
of
R..W.
Bro. Fred Griffiths and we saw
each other regularly on the circuit when he was appointed Provincial ADC in 1969. His appointment to Deputy DC followed in 1975 and Robert was the Provincial Grand
Director
of Ceremonies from L977 to
L982, when he was appointed Assistant Provincial Grand Master by R.W. Bro. Hanson. He was

THE TEDDIES HAVE ARRIVED! The "Teddies for Loving Care" (TLC) project was launched in May when the Provincial Charity Steward, John Gaston,
presented a quantity of teddies to the Accident & Emergency Department at Worcester Roya I Hospita I . The first young patient to receive a teddy was Chloe and, as the photograph shows, she soon became very attached to her new companion,
Sister Linda Ingles said that the bears have a calming effect on the children,

In latter years he took charge
of researching all first appointments and promotions in the Province which for the
first time rewarded those who had contributed most. He had an almost encyclopaedic memory in this respect and fiercely defended all his recommendations. He was usually right. Apart from this administrative ability he loved to be out and about visiting the
Lodges/ meeting people and shaking hands with a smile. He rarely spent bn evening at home and if on occasion he was a trifle austere it was because he considered either insufficient effort or preparation had been forthcoming and the traditions and standards he upheld
At the Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Chapter on 9 April 2005, E Comp Joe Grundy proudly received his promotion from the Grand Superintendent. E Comp Richard Price remarked on Joe's war record and its surprising consequences.......... Serving in the Royal Warwickhire Regiment, Joe was evacuated from Dunkirk on June 3* L940, the day afterthe operation ofthe little boats was declared as over. After he came bac( Joe was sent to Burma, where he remained until the end of the war, fighting the Japanese in many of the major battles. He rose to the rank of Major and had been selected to take part in the final assault against the Japanese mainland when the bomb was dropped and Joe was able to come home. Joe never forgot the help given him by a French farmer and his family during the retreat to the Dunkirk beaches and he made it one of his first duties when the war was over to go back and thank them. He took with him his wife, son and daughter. Ian, Joe's son, fell in love with the French couple's daughter and they married. Ian and his wife live in Paris and have a son who, a short time ago completed his National Service in the French Army, leaving with the rank of Lieutenant. It is ironical that Joe, whose forefathers fought at Waterloo, probably against members of his son in law's family, now has a French soldier as a grandson c'est la vie!

The Board of General Purposes
has
announced that it has appointed W Bro Granville Angell as Prestonian Lecturer for 2006. W Bro Angell's Lecture will
be entitled "The Victoria Cross Freemasons' Band of Brothers".
The Prestonian Lecture results from a bequest by William Preston in 1B1B to the United Grand Lodge of England and we believe that this is the first time
that a member of our Province of Worcestershire has been granted this great honour.
We offer many congratulations to W
Bro Granville and hope that the delivery of his Lecture throughout the country, and possibly worldwide, will be a great success and the source of much interest and enjoyment.
