CUSTOMER CARE
by Peter Munton
Introduction, Preparation and First Contact
F
irst of all, let me state the obvious. The most important element in a Hairdressers world is the customer. You cannot be a hairdresser without clients; every single one is vitally important. Add to that, the best patrons are happy ones; we should aim to create happy clients that will always return to us. I’ve often heard it said that customer care is common sense. In my experience, common sense is not that common. Good customer care is a learnt skill that is difficult to keep up 100% of the time. Keep it up you must, your clients deserve nothing less. Of course, our hairdressing skills should be second to none, but they are not the only important skills. Caring for our customers, before, during and after their visit is vital. Of course, one great side benefit of happy clients is, our working day will be more pleasant. Therefore Customer Care is an equally important aspect of a hairdressers skills, just as important as practical skills. This is also the most cost-effective way of upgrading the service you provide. It’s free, can be applied to the highest level, in all salons; from one operator salons to large salon groups. I’m sure we all feel we provide a good service to our customers. But do we deliver the best customer care we can, all the time? Most lost customers are lost due to one small incident happening on one occasion, therefore, we should not lower our service ever. Remember one small slip will change our client’s perception of us. This is such a vast subject that I will pass on my personal feeling on this over several articles. This first article of the series covers Preparation and First Contact.
Excellent Service and Skill becomes your autograph...
Preparation... ATTITUDE: Should be that all clients are equally important, our approach will be reflected in their opinion of us as individuals and of the salon team. APPEARANCE: We should not only show that we are part of the fashion industry and reflect our salon’s image but of course just as important is our own personal presence. CLIENT DETAILS: We should check all clients appointments well before they arrive to avoid any surprises and to be aware of their 10
past visits. Including any products purchased, we can then first check if they are happy; you should want to know if their last visit was what they wanted. Also, if any product purchased did not live up to their expectations you will be able to recommend an alternative. Then you can move on to the current visit with any past problems, dealt with and not clouding this visit. TIME KEEPING: For our own personal professional image to our clients we should be on the salon floor and ready to receive clients at our start time. Arriving at the salon at your start time impacts on your perceived professionalism, and leave the client feeling rushed, even if this is not the case. SALON READINESS: And of course, every aspect of the salon should be ready for the client’s visit. TEAM READINESS: Finally, but most importantly every member of staff should be mindful of all facets of the customer’s experience.
A customers complaint is your greatest learning source
First Contact... SOCIAL CONTACT: The first contact could be at any time, not just when a client walks into the salon. Maybe a new acquaintance, when on a social night out, shows interest when they hear you are a hairdresser. Be professional even if you think this is an invasion of your privacy, be friendly but ask them to come to the salon for a consultation. Although you are on your own time you are still representing your professional self and your salon. Remember this new contact may become your most loyal client, create a great first and lasting impression. They will always remember your first meeting. ONLINE CONTACT: In this era of social media, you could gain new clients online, as with meeting someone on a night out, be professional, create a great first impression, and arrange a consultation in the salon. PHONE CONTACT: The most common first contact with new or existing customers is on the phone, usually a call to the salon to arrange an appointment. Don’t let the phone ring for too long, if you are already dealing with a client excuse yourself answer the phone and let the caller know you will be with them soon, a
caller waiting too long could be upset with you before they even speak to you. Every time you answer the phone be prepared, friendly and helpful, it could be your first contact. You should of course answer with you salons accepted procedure. RECEPTION: One definition of reception is the act of receiving or being received, this is self-explanatory. Reception can also mean, the manner in which something, such as a guest or a new idea, is received: Eg. a cold reception, which of course also applies to the salon reception area, the last thing we want is for our customer is “A cold reception”. Visitors to the salon should be received promptly in a friendly manner. As with the phone if you are busy with another client excuse yourself, greet the arriving client, and return to the customer you are dealing with. This is, of course, obvious, all the same, it is easy when busy to appear to be uninterested. It’s the customer perception that matters. The salon receiver should be aware of all expected customers, their reason for this visit and the member of staff allocated to them. The client can then be guided to the correct location, be it the waiting area, washing area or styling position.
Finally, but most importantly every member of staff should be mindful of all facets of the customer’s experience, “It’s not my responsibility” should never be your attitude, everything is everyone’s responsibility when it comes to customer care. This applies to all layers of the team, salon owners, managers, stylists, colourists, trainees, reception, cleaners and any other layer of staff you may have. You are all members of a team and what one does affect all. This series of Articles will continue in the next edition of “IrishHairdresser” with “Consultation”
First Class Service Guarantee
If a client’s service is delayed for any reason they must be kept up to date with their status. eg. if a client is told there will be a 10-minute delay, after 5 minutes reassure them, don’t leave the sitting wondering if the delay will be longer. It is important at this stage of the client’s experience is to ensure that all customers receive any additional service offered. For example, if the salon supplies a beverage to clients, ensure that all clients are offered this. A client could feel left out or unimportant if forgotten, and we all know that every client is important.

FONDATION GUILLAUME IRELAND
A great year for Ambassadors Erin, Nicole, Sandra and Zhyna.
I
ntercoiffure Ireland are very proud of the four young hairstyists that represented them as their Ambassadors for Fondation Guillaume during 2017. They are a wonderful example of the future of Hairdressing in Ireland to come. The girls took every opportunity available to them during their 12 months reign and had many wonderful experiences training with the very best hairdressers in Ireland. They also assisted at hair shows and completed two of their own photoshoots. They finished off their years experience with a trip to Paris to the International Fondation Guillaume Academy at the Intercoiffure House of Nations where they enjoyed International education and training and a great cultural experience..
36
Fondation Guillaume was set up in Paris in 1982 by the renowned Parisian Hair designer, sculpturer, avant garde artist and patron of the Arts - Guillaume Gugliemi. The Fondation promotes and nurtures the young people under 27 from Intercoiffure member salons all over the world. Fondation Guillaume teams join and enjoy the opportunity to gain inspiration and enjoy cultural differences and opens many new doors within the industry. Thank you: Erin Hoare, Nicola Mitchell, Sandra O’Sullivan, and Zhyna Williams.

HAIROTICA ALTERNATIVE HAIR SHOW. LONDON.
A
fantastic experience started for Amanda Whittome, representing the Hugh Campbell Hair Group when she presented an amazing Avant Garde look at the Ireland Visionary Awards during the BEST of the BEST event in Dublin - and won. From this win she got through to the final of the International Visionary Awards in London and re-presented her look in the Royal Albert Hall to an audience of 5000 Hairdressers. Triumph was hers once again when she won on that night. One year later she was back in London but this time presenting Hairotica for the Hugh Campbell Hair Group as one of the shows at the Alternative Hair Show. Inspiration was from the shows of the 35th anniversary. Utopia.- meaning perfect world have always been in the dark and vampy side of fashion. Than the erotic world of beautiful sexy strong women. Beauty Therapist, Educator, Business Owner, Former Network Cork President and general all-around Boss Lady
H
ailing from Bandon, West Cork, Ciara Wilson is the co-owner of Salon Shop Hair and Beauty Supplies. A successful two store company with over 20 members of staff.
Ciara always knew she wanted a job where she could make someone happy and could help influence their mood’s. She loved watching hairdressers and make-up artists working their magic. Ciara fell in love with the industry, so she began a Beauty Therapy course in Cork College of Commerce. At just 19 years of age, with the help of her father, Ciara opened her very own Salon in French Church street, Cork. Working six days a week for two years straight, Ciara remained studious and focused on creating a successful business. After another 4 years running her own business in the City, Ciara was ready for a change. “I was ready to grow again, big spa-like salons were trending, but I needed the experience of managing a team – so I decided to go work in a spa and learn how to be a manager, I started in Inchydoney Spa as assistant manager and in-house trainer for their skincare brand Elemis and spa therapies, and within two years, I was managing a team of 52 staff at the spa. I loved it there so much, I stayed nearly eight years. I loved learning all about holistic therapies.”
a recession.” Shortly after opening the second branch of Salon Shop, Ciara became a member of Network Cork and she hasn’t looked back, successfully reigning as President for the year 2017. Its not all work however, as in her spare time Ciara loves to travel. “Two years ago, we didn’t ever switch off; but after a trip of a lifetime to Australia where we rented a camper to travel around, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to get one at home. So, nearly every weekend from April to October, we head off on a Friday evening and travel Ireland. We have two-thirds of the wild Atlantic Way done; this year, we will go from Mayo to Belfast. Our two dogs hop in and away we go, we get to go to the festivals in style!”
“I love to teach, I am a qualified teacher and love passing knowledge onto people and watching them grow.”
After Inchydoney, Ciara was itching to get back to the city where she joined Therapy Laser Clinic on Opera Lane for a year. Then in 2012 with her partner Aidan O Mahony they opened Salon Shop Cork. “The aim was to create employment for myself. We didn’t envision back then that we would grow so fast and during 42
One of Ciara’s many talents is teaching. “I love to teach, I am a qualified teacher and love passing knowledge onto people and watching them grow.” Now that Ciara has stepped down as president of Network Cork, she is hoping to go back and get her Masters in Education and Training. Salon Shop Hair and Beauty Supplies first opened its doors in the Bandon Bypass Business Park, Bandon in 2009, with a second store opened in Kinsale Road Business Park, Cork in 2011. As one of Irelands leading Hair and Beauty Suppliers, they supply a wide variety of brands including milk_shake, Montibello, Reuzel, Gelish, Vani-T Tan and KeraStraight to name a few. They also supply beautiful custom furniture from brands Crewe Orlando and Ayala. Upstairs in the Cork Store, along with the furniture showroom they also run a very successful Training Academy, with courses ranging from Hair, Nails and even Ear Piercing. Vanity X Makeup Academy is also based on the Cork premises.

Is there a particular quote you like? “Be yourself everyone else is taken” - Oscar Wilde and also “Success comes from curiosity, concentration, perseverance and self criticism’ -Albert Einstein.
When did you start taking your own photographs? I started photographing my own hair creations in 2015 after I completed a course in Limerick Senior College.

What do you do in your spare time?
Presently I have been working really hard in my spare time creating and photographing images for 2018. I consider photography my favourite hobby and it has benefited my career immensely. Other than that I love watching movies and socialising in my local pub.
What Influences/inspires you?
I take influence and inspiration from a lot of myriad sources such as • Fashion Photographers like Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, Rankin. • Artists like Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Ryan Burke, • Fashion Designers like Commes des Garcon (Japanese), and Thierry Mugler (French) and the late Alexander Mc Queen CBE (British).
“Success comes from curiosity, concentration, perseverance and self criticism’- Albert Einstein. I love the idea of classic beauty with a contemporary twist for commercial work but I think the Avant Garde should be free from the ideas of traditional beauty when creating Avant Garde or Fantasy I like to play with obscurity and do the unexpected. I think its important to approach things from a different angle to be original. 46

GLAMOUR BALL
T
he industry’s first ‘Glamour Ball’ was held in the Radisson Hotel, Athlone. Dress to Impress was the order of the event…However, it also said – ‘wear anything you like as long as its Black’! Like all those walking the red carpet in ‘black’ recently this event had a cause - to highlight Bullying in all forms and its effects on people. It was an amazing night that started with a Champaign reception and the fabulous sound of a solo saxophone player playing “As time goes by” and other recognisable tunes. Host for the evening was Irelands freshest, fiercest temptress Letycha Le’Synn. Dinner was superb and then ‘Bowtie’ – the band, took to the stage and filled the dance floor immediately for the next 2 hours. Then DJ Wayne Lloyd took over and rocked the place up until the early hours of the morning.

BARBERS UNITE The Barber Council of Ireland
A
nother milestone in the industry - a fresh, new Barbering Organisation, namely the Barber Council of Ireland. A group of progressive Barbers with open minds formed the organization and set up an executive committee to deal with concerning issues in the sector. They vow to start the process of applying for a Barbering Apprenticeship within the next year following the Hairdressing Councils success with this and to lobby the government on issues such as licensing and state registration. They also will work to improve the standards in hygiene, health and safety, education and the public image of their trade. VAT will also be an important issue.
The groups Executive Board consist of (left to right), Charles Clarke - General Secretary (The Stately Gent, Cavan), Mark Gaye - President (Notorious Barbers Ltd) and Vinnie Kearns Vice President (Peaky & Co Barbers). The guys have a collective experience of over 50 years in the barbering industry. Membership of the organisation is currently free, open to the entire island of Ireland and available at any stage of your career in the industry from student to salon owner. THE STATELY GENT When timeless heritage meets contemporary design you achieve a level of style that only the classiest of establishments can succeed in achieving.
W
elcome to The Stately Gent. Brought to Stradone, Ireland, by international educator Charles Clarke, The Stately Gent is a high-end barbershop offering the finest service in the most luxurious of surroundings. It’s located in an almost two centuries old building that has been fully restored while taking advantage of the stunning traditional features including natural stone walls. With almost 30-years’ experience in the industry, Charles knew exactly what he wanted with The Stately Gent – top of the range service and truly outstanding customer service. He’s outdone himself with highly trained staff who are as passionate about barbering as he is, offering an experience that is second to none for each and every customer that walks through the doors. But more than that, Charles wanted to integrate the world of men’s fashion into his love of barbering. They’re both about looking your best after all! Now The Stately Gent is set to offer a variety of premium brands hand-picked by Charles for their quality and excellence. The Stately Gent is taking barbering to the level it deserves, offering customers an unrivalled experience steeped in heritage, sophistication and class.
76
77
Design You’ll certainly be impressed by the aesthetics of The Stately Gent. From when you first come upon the building erected in 1828 by Major Robert Burrowes, High Sheriff of Cavan, it’s a marvellous sight full of history and culture. Step inside the salon proper and it gets even better as old and new blend seamlessly together to create a luxurious experience for both clients and staff. Antique chesterfields and the original stone walls combine expertly with modern salon design to create an atmosphere that feels as exclusive as it does comfortable. Nothing incorporates the old ways with the new better than The Stately Gents’ range of refurbished Belmont Apollo chairs from Custom Belmont. Beautifully complementing the stately surroundings, they are a fusion of vintage elegance with modern construction. Having become a real centrepiece of the business, they are a gateway into the history of barbering as a whole and how we’ve got to where we are today.
Charles has seen it all, done it all, and never stopped learning along the way. Education at The Stately Gent To complement the exceptional surroundings you need an exceptional barber and there’s few finer than Charles Clarke. With 2018 set to mark his 30th year in the trade, Charles has seen it all, done it all, and never stopped learning along the way. As a former member of Sid Sottung’s International Creative Team he’s travelled the globe showcasing work of the highest calibre but it’s in bringing out the best in other people where he truly shines. Working alongside the likes of Adam Sloan as part of the City & Guilds Barbering Industry Board and as a fully accredited assessor and IQA with VTCT, Charles is determined to raise the standard of barbering across the industry. At The Stately Gent’s very own training school he is offering a range of courses for barbers whether you’re looking for your Level 2, Level 3, or an extended diploma, or if you’re after a day courses to top up your knowledge on skin fades or any other specific piece of knowledge. For hairdressers looking to take advantage of the incredible growth in the male grooming sector in recent years, you can be taught the skills needed to transfer your expertise and boost your business thanks to the barbering boom. With easy payment plans and the ability to work around your schedule, it’s the chance to finally take the next step in your career and upgrade your work. 78

THE BALDY BARBER MICHAEL MORIARTY A LEGEND IN HIS OWN RIGHT
In the beginning
The Moriarty Barbershop in Merchants Quay was founded in 1937 by my father Peter Moriarty. Merchants Quay at that time was the business hub of the City. Peter trained with Barber Bill Howard O’Sullivan in Killarney before moving to Cork to open his own Barber Shop Business. I was born in Ballincollic so I’m a country boy! I started Barbering in 1966 in Blackpool. My father opened another Barber Shop in the suburbs of Blackpool 6 years previously. The ground floor was the new Barber Shop and the first floor was our new home. At one time my father Peter, my uncle Michael-John, my brother John and young sister Jacqueline and I all cut hair together in the business. In 1970 I was given the position of Manager and I built up the great business it is today. Sadly, my father Peter passed away in 1978. Two years later the Merchant Quay premises was bought over for the development that is there today. In 1982 I redecorated and expanded Blackpool to include a separate Ladies Salon. After three years I decided to close it because of high tax on services (ie Vat at 23%) and considering that haircuts were then just £1.30 (old money)! In 1992 I opened it again but made the decision to close after 6 years to concentrate solely on my Barbering Business
Shaving:
The Barber Shop has become bit of a legend. We always try to stay at the cutting edge of trends while retaining the traditions of the old school barbershop and are often referred to as the leading experts in the traditional hot towel shave. Shaving is a specialised Barbering skill. It needs to be done expertly and should never be rushed. Timing is also important with approx 30 minutes devoted to it with hot towel, cold towel, hot towel, cleanser, toner and after shave balm used for the perfect shave.
80
The ‘VAT Man’.
Over the years I have constantly campaigned to whatever Ministers/TDs were in government at the time over my passion for getting VAT abolished in Barbering or at least reduced to 5%. There are so many barber shops now and if the government wiped out the threshold and 5%VAT would be the most that would be charged on a haircut. Of course, better still if there was no VAT at all charged. Even this year Minister for finance Pascal O Donohue, got my letter. My friends call me the VAT man because I am always writing to TD’s about it. If there was ‘no threshold’ there would be fair play. One of the best industry memories I have was in the 80’s and 90’s protesting the high VAT percentage by marching with banners down O’Connell Street, Dublin with hundreds of barbers and hairdressers united in one cause. I met great people and it was uplifting for the industry when we finally got the VAT reduced then. Spokesperson for Fianna Fail on finance, Michael McGrath from Cork hopes to raise the VAT issue in the Dail.
Lead by example!
On 1st May 1990 I banned smoking in the Baldy Barbers. That was a great talking point! When the National Smoking Ban was introduced Minister Michael Martin in 1996 said “I’m only following the good example of the Baldy Barber who enforced this many years ago!”
Apprenticeship:
It’s fantastic to see the Hairdressing Council working as the Leaders in the New Apprenticeship for Hairdressers. I hope to see Barbering as an Apprenticeship next and I definitely agree with Licensing of businesses which may be possible now for Hairdressers after the Apprenticeship rolls out around the country. It is not possible to have it without a National Apprenticeship.
“I am now nearly bionic and ready for life as it finds me now” The Cure:
My father formulated a lotion cure for Alopecia Areata. He helped many people and made a name for himself as a supplier of this great cure. He passed on his special formula to me some years later. In 1995 I heard that Princess Caroline of Monaco had a Alopecia Areata problem so I sent her a 500ml bottle of the lotion. The Palace did acknowledge that the lotion for the Princess was received. After that who knows…Unfortunately I never found out if she tried it or not. This news hit the Cork Examiner headlines at the time. Tom Hickey also reported on a young girl in Cork I helped and that was picked up by Corks local radio. That Christmas I had to take
the shop phone off the hook as we couldn’t cope with the requests for the lotion. On Christmas Eve Marian Finuncian of RTE did a special story on the Alopecia Areata Cure Lotion. The lotion is still in demand today and I have had good success stories. It would be great if one of my daughters would keep on this business.
Surprise Surprise!
Cilla Black once did one of her special programmes in Cork in my shop! It was all about a local lady Kitty Healy’ Cilla and her husband Bobby were lovely
Newcomer Advice:
It is great to see young Irish people coming into the industry – provided of course that they are properly trained. Learn all the aspects of Barbering including Shaving. There is a difference in a Barber and a Men’s Hairdresser … one shaves the other doesn’t. Truth is Bitter!
Health
I was 70 last September. I swim every day and I enjoy golf and walking. I love going to Spain exploring different areas. I love the heat and the sea to swim in. It is just fabulous. Last year I had a triple bypass, a hip replacement and two new knees …so I am now nearly bionic and ready for life as it finds me now”
Future
I will retire I suppose in a couple of years. I will take it as it comes. My two daughters aren’t interested in following the family tradition of 80+ years… so the books will stop when I stop.

Judging was tough; however, we are delighted to have an extremely talented list of individuals that are going through to the next stage – I personally would love to thank everyone for entering and special thanks to our amazing judges who give up their time for this.” Wella’s Director of Education, Sheila Jackson.
