Another Year.... Doesn’t time fly... I hope you enjoy our bumper edition of Irish Hairdresser! We took a little break since the last edition, to re-charge our batteries and plan for bigger and better things ahead! So please let us know what you think of this bumper edition, and what you would like to see in future editions. Your feedback is important to us. If you want to make sure that you receive every edition of Irish Hairdresser, just email your details to info@irishhairdresser.ie and we’ll do the rest. Over the years we have put the spotlight on many very successful hairdressers – those successful at competition and those successful in business. But there are many others out there who do super work in their own quiet, unassuming way, and may be too shy or lacking confidence for public competitions. If you know of a super hairdresser who deserves some limelight, why not send us the full information, and names of those endorsing the nominee, and we’ll look into doing a special feature on “hidden gems”. Don’t forget to take note of the details of the ‘BEST of the BEST’ competition. Its time to start thinking of which categories suit you, get your mood boards ready, do some salon team brainstorming, book your photographer and get ready to compete! Good Luck…. I leave you with a saying I came across recently: “Successful people don’t reach their goals alone ... and you yourself are not successful until you help others succeed”.

ALFAPARF SHOWTIME Acclaimed stylist, designer and TV presenter, Brendan Courtney, hosted the logistically massive, sold-out ALFAPARF FANTASTIC HAIRDRESSER event with 1,250 hairdressers attending.
In recognition of the late David Bowie’s fashion and style iconic status, all the artistic and creative elements of the event presented Bowie themed segments and the results were a spectacular tribute to one of most influential cultural and artistic heroes of his - or any other - generation. Bowie’s constantly evolving style and artistic personas were immediately identifiable through his hair cuts and his artistic alter-egos. Ireland’s best stylists honoured him in a visually stunning style tribute, complete with Bowie back-catalogue soundtrack, to the man who directly inspired many of them. Awards’ Director, Ger Hand, and Assistant Production Manager, Neil Canavan, brought together all aspects of the production – audio, video, lighting and staging aspects. Their professionalism and vision made successive shows the standard-setting event it has come to be. This show is now the benchmark of excellence and imagination for Ireland’s styling and hair sector. Outstanding dance and movement director Lucie Pankhurst choreographed the shows.
Sound and vision Paul Stafford, ALFAPARF MILANO Global Ambassador, along with his team from Paul Stafford Hair paid homage, with a decade-spanning interpretation to this truly generation-defining artist with their show Sound and Vision.

THE TOP 5 REASONS YOUR SALON NEEDS TO GET ONLINE! The world has moved online. Consumers nowadays have instant access to products, services, prices and information worldwide technology is shaping how they shop. The impact of how the millennial generation consumes products and services has been huge and this is not slowing down, with them spending up to 4.5 hours per day online. As this is a key target market for all salons, 2017 must be a year for salons to really focus on getting a website for their hair or beauty business. According to research carried out in the US, $2,200 (€1,952) is the average amount spent on a website by local businesses, so it’s no wonder that approx 70%-80% of salons have no website presence at all, with many only having a Facebook page. SalonMonkey, Ireland’s largest provider of affordable websites to the hair and beauty sector, have put together the Top 5 reasons why your salon needs a website:
01
Reach New Customers:
02
Help existing customers find you:
03
Open 24/7:
04
Credibility:
05
Website vs Facebook page
Having a website is especially important for small businesses. According to a study carried out by Neilsen, 85% of customers use the internet to find a local business with 59% of mobile users who look for local information visiting the business on the same day! Salons must understand that the first port of call for many potential new clients when searching for anything is online via their mobile phones and not embracing this is like saying ‘I don’t want any new clients’.
According to research carried out by ComScore, the No.1 reason for doing an online search is to find the location for a ‘known’ business. Your salon needs a good, clean and responsive website to help your existing customers find you.
A website ensures that your business is essentially open to clients 24/7. With the busy lifestyles many of your potential clients have today, a huge number of potential customers are researching products and service providers in the evening, when your salon is closed. It’s key that your business can be found by these potential customers even when your salon is closed, that you provide all information to help them make a booking decision and ideally that you allow them to make bookings online. Then you can literally make money when you sleep….
Research carried out by Brightlocal analysed the key things people look for in local websites. 68% of those surveyed said that having a website, ideally one that is well designed, is a huge factor in the opinion they hold about a business and directly influences their decision to use a local business. Consumers, especially the younger generation, give more credit to local businesses that have a clean and smart online presence.
While Facebook is great, and one of many social tools that should be used by all salons to keep in touch with their existing client base, it was not designed to be a business’s only online voice. A potential new client needs to be able to very easily access all relevant information they want, encouraging them to pick up the phone to book your salon or to book you online. No, the client does not want to spend 15mins searching through your photos for a picture of the price list you took 3 years ago ;-) This is far better served by your own salon website.
28
Research carried out by SalonMonkey of over 500 girls aged 18-34 showed that they want to see the following on a salon website:
Irish Hairdresser Magazine spoke to Richard Spence, Founder of SalonMonkey.
1. Salon services 2. Salon prices with NO hidden costs 3. To be able to book online 4. To see pictures of previous clients 5. To be able to navigate a website easily 6. That the website is up to date and simple to use.
“We wanted to create a hassle free solution that fixed all of the pains salons had and make it super easy & affordable for a salon to get online. We also wanted to ensure salon websites had all of the key things consumers wanted. We offer salons a choice of beautiful salon specific mobile responsive website designs, build it and manage it on an ongoing basis, all for only €25 per month. We do everything including buy the domain name, host the site, do the SEO, update the site any time at the request of the salon, and provide all the maintenance & support. We also can add the booking widget provided by your salon software company enabling you to take bookings online. This means salons never have to worry about their website being out of date or breaking down again, we take care of everything allowing them to focus on what they love to do: make client’s look and feel amazing!”
Interestingly, the results of further research carried out by SalonMonkey across hundreds of Irish & UK hair and beauty salons showed that salons understand the need to have a website, and would like to have one. However: 1. Salons don’t have the time to organize it and get it built. 2. Salons don’t want to spend a large amount up front 3. Salons don’t want to have to manage a website on an ongoing basis as they are too busy running their business. 4. Salons often don’t have the technical expertise to deal with issues when they arise and need support in this regard.

SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO HAIR GROWTH
NEOFOLLICS WHY, HOW & WHAT? Being confronted with hair loss can be an unpleasant experience. We at Trichology Ireland want to help people who are dealing with hair loss to gain control of their situation.
Neofollics Hair Technology strives to develop treatments for hair loss which are as effective as possible, without compromising on costs and convenience. Neofollics Hair Technology’s products have their basis in scientific research, and are of high quality; they are pleasant to use and good value for money Neofollics Lotion was clinically tested among 30 subjects and evaluated according to the same scientific methods that were used for the evaluation of Finasteride and Minoxidil.
70
Test subjects with Alopecia Androgenetic used the Neofollics lotion for 3 months. They applied the lotion as recommended, twice a day. After 3 months, 75% of the test subjects experienced an increase in hair growth. And for 76% there was a reduction of hair loss. The combined effect was observed in 59% of the users: both a stimulation of hair growth and a reduction of hair loss. In total, 92% of the users saw an improvement.

THE INTERNATIONAL VISIONARY AWARD The International Visionary Award has become an important part of the London Alternative Hair Show evening and each year the number of global applicants increases.
It starts with hairdressers competiting in their country to get through to the International final. In Ireland the competition starts with a photographic entry through ‘Irish Hairdresser’. These go through direct to Tony Rizzo in London at the Alternative Hair office for Anthony Mascolo to judge. Then the Ireland finalists are announced and are through to the ‘live’ final at the ‘BEST of the BEST’ Awards in June at the Mansion House. Dublin. At the final in Dublin, three Ireland winners are chosen by a panel of special guests chosen by International Icon Tony Rizzo. The winners are from the three categories Ladies Cut & Colour, Mens Image and Avant Garde image. This year the three Irish finalists for this International VISIONARY Awards were Amanda Whittome (The River – Hugh Campbell Hair Group), Marese Sweeney (Rosannos Sligo) and Niall Bennett (H2O New Ross, Co Wexford). In London at the Royal Albert Hall 35 finalists from many countries presented one model each in either the Cut & Colour, Mens and Avant-Garde category. The intricacy and quality of the work shown was highly impressive and it was an almost impossible task for the panel of iconic judges to select the winners.

ODYSSEY The Alternative Hair Show – a continual evolving and enduring journey, stimulating creativity and inspiring our hairdressers to push their artistry to new limits.
Alternative Hair has continued to showcase artistic hairdressers from across the globe, enticing them to take their creativity to ever more daring heights without limitations, exposing their work to an enthralled audience. This creative journey has brought hairdressing teams together for the mutual benefit of our charity, Fighting Leukaemia, but has also brought them together as a global artistic force. The 34th Alternative Hair Show took place at London’s Royal Albert Hall, raising a fantastic £190,319.50 for Fighting Leukaemia. This year’s theme: Odyssey, proved highly inspirational for the 20 artistic hair teams from across the world participating in the Show. Combining amazing hair styling, makeup and fashion styling with impressive choreography, each show enthralled, entertained and impressed the 5,000 audience.
The 2016 Teams were presented to the audience by Alternative Hair Founder, Tony Rizzo and Worldwide President, Anthony Mascolo. Each team received a handmade award created by Wil & El Esser. The Alternative Hair teams were: Sassoon - Uk Altamoda - Ireland Anteo Geminiani - Italy Felicitas - Spain Robert Masciave - Uk Laszlo Hajas - Hungary Mikel Luzea - Spain Anne Veck - Uk Carlo Bay - Italy Sanrizz - Uk Klaus Peter Ochs - Germany Bundy Bundy - Austria Kohsuke Visual Network - Japan Gogen - Italy Robert Cromeans - Usa Fehringer - Austria Mahogany - Uk Saco - Uk Dmitry Vinokurov - Russia Tigi Creative Team - Uk
Alternative Hair is about promoting artistic hair talent but its heart is about raising money for Fighting Leukaemia. A short film to illustrate how the money raised is invested is shown to the audience before the Charity Appeal, which was presented by show host, Linda Evans and Leukaemia survivor, 7 year old, Blue Tobin. As well as putting money into the buckets shaken throughout the theatre by a team from Bloodwise, the audience was invited to text: AHSW16 £5 to 70070
The spectacular evening closed with a presentation the cheque for £190,319.50. WOW

A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS JUST A DREAM How to set a marketing plan for your salon Our industry has so much competition, literally on our doorstep or just around the corner that it’s really important for you, as the salon owner to set out a clear marketing strategy or plan. There are many reasons for this, but one of the most important is so you, and critically your staff, have a clear vision of who your target clients are and how you are going to try and target them.
What’s your business goal? Do you want to win awards, have multiple salons, employ a certain number of staff or make a particular profit? This business goal or goals is where you want to get to and your marketing plan will help you and your team get to this point.
SWOT Where are you now? Before you can plan how you’re going to get to your business goal you need to have a really good (and honest) view of where you are now. Look at your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Strengths and weaknesses refer to characteristics that exist within your business, while opportunities and threats refer to outside factors. To determine your company’s strengths, consider the ways that you’re offering is superior to others, if your service is more comprehensive or that you have a star rating, for example. What do you offer that gives your business a competitive advantage? Weaknesses, on the other hand, can be anything from operating in a highly saturated market to lack of experienced staff members. Opportunities are exactly that – areas you can move into by taking advantage of your strengths.
Target audience: Develop a short, clear description of your target client. What sort of people are they, how old, male or female, where do they live? Once you know who your target clients are (and these may not be the same as your current clients) it’s easier to then target them in the right way. 110
Set a budget: It sounds obvious but it’s important to set a marketing budget, up front. This helps inform what activities you can do as some will be simply too expensive. However, be flexible as sometimes opportunities come up that are too good to miss!
What activities? What are the specific marketing activities you’re going to carry out to help meet your goals and get in front of your target audience? Think of multiple channels, or types of media, to target the same audience, as if they see and recognise your business (and its strengths) in several places, then they are much more likely to consider trying you out. Importantly marketing isn’t a one hit activity; it’s
something you need to do constantly, especially as there is so much competition in our industry.
Delegate: Finally, delegate and empower your team to take responsibility for specific parts of the marketing plan and reward them for meeting set targets for marketing.
